Frequently asked questions, what if i am just missing one stamp because the brewery was closed.

Prizes will not be given for incomplete passports, but don’t worry – you can take as long as you like to complete your passport. Some guests do it over multiple visits spanning months or even years. Keep in mind that each brewery has varying hours and open days, so please check schedules before you start. You must visit every brewery in a territory to win a prize.

WHERE DO I DOWNLOAD THE APP?

The app is web-based, so you won’t find it in any app store. Just go to  BendAleTrail.app  on your smartphone, create an account, and you are ready to go.

ARE THE SAME BREWERIES ON THE APP AND IN THE PAPER PASSPORT?

Almost. A handful of breweries have closed and a few have opened since the paper passport went to print. We will update the passport next time we go to print, but for now winning prizes is a tiny bit easier with the passport.

WHY AM I BEING ASKED TO ALLOW LOCATION SERVICES?

The app works best when you allow it to use location services. With this enabled, you can easily check in to all breweries and Drinkable Diversions with GPS.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN THE APP THINKS I AM IN A DIFFERENT BREWERY?

A few breweries are very close together and it can happen that GPS thinks you are in a different establishment nearby. If this happens, look for the Bend Ale Trail or Drinkable Diversions sign in your location and enter the manual code on the lower right corner of the sign.

HOW DO I GET MY PRIZES?

When you have visited every brewery location in a territory (or seven Drinkable Diversions) you are eligible for a unique prize. If you are using the app, you will be prompted to redeem your prize when you have visited every location. If you are using the paper passport, you will have a bunch of stamps in your passport. Either way, come to the  Visitor Center  and claim your goodies.

SOME BREWERIES HAVE MORE THAN ONE LOCATION. CAN I VISIT ONE LOCATION AND GET STAMPS FOR ALL OF THEIR LOCATIONS?

Nope. One stamp or check-in per location, not per brewery.

I AM THE DESIGNATED DRIVER FOR MY GROUP. CAN I GET STAMPS FOR A DESIGNATED DRIVER PRIZE AND A TERRITORY PRIZE AT THE SAME TIME?

No. Double stamping is the number one party foul.

ARE BEND ALE TRAIL TERRITORY TASTER GLASSES AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE?

Nope, but Visit Bend has plenty of other Bend Ale Trail merchandise available for purchase including postcards, hats, bottle openers, and more.

CAN EACH MEMBER OF MY FAMILY REDEEM A BEND ALE TRAIL ™ PASSPORT FOR A SOUVENIR?

Yes, as long as each family member is 21 or older.

CAN I BRING MY FRIEND’S BEND ALE TRAIL PASSPORT AND PICK UP THEIR PRIZE?

Yes, as long as your pal is at least 21 and you bring along the original Bend Ale Trail Passport. If your friend used the app and has completed a territory, we need authorization from them to release their prize.

IF I FORGET TO CHECK IN AT A BREWERY, CAN I GET A STAMP AT VISIT BEND?

Sorry, nope. Visit Bend does not provide Bend Ale Trail Passport stamps. The fun of the Bend Ale Trail is enjoying Bend’s fine craft breweries, so make sure you consult the hours before setting out. When it’s time to claim your prize, check the hours for the Bend  Visitor Center  to be certain we’re here to pat you on the back and hand over your prize.

IS THERE A DEADLINE TO TURN IN A BEND ALE TRAIL PASSPORT?

There’s no deadline to complete the Bend Ale Trail, so take as long as you like. That said, prizes are limited to stock on hand.

CAN I REDEEM MY BEND ALE TRAIL PASSPORT AND RECEIVE MY PRIZE BY MAIL?

No. Due to the fragile nature of the prizes, you must collect these in person.

DO I NEED TO COLLECT STAMPS OR CHECK IN TO BREWERIES IN A CERTAIN ORDER?

You can trek the trail in any order you like—no need to follow any special route!

CAN I TAKE MY UNDERAGE CHILDREN INTO THESE BREWERIES?

Generally, yes. Please contact the brewery if you have questions or need additional details. Minors are not eligible to complete a Bend Ale Trail Passport.

HOW CAN I GET AROUND THE BEND ALE TRAIL WITHOUT DRIVING?

There are plenty of awesome operators offering Bend Ale Trail tours. We have the Bend Brew Bus, The Bend Tour Company, and more. Some of the Bend Ale Trail is bike-able, and parts are walkable. Review the map to decide what you’re up for.

CAN I STILL GET A TROPHY FOR COMPLETING A TERRITORY DURING BEND ALE TRAIL MONTH (NOVEMBER)?

Nope. As part of our move towards more sustainable practices, we are no longer giving away trophies for Bend Ale Trail Month. We will, however, give out a very sweet prize to everyone who completes a territory during Bend Ale Trail Month. Limit of one per person.

CAN I RECYCLE THE PAKTECH PLASTIC CAN-CARRIER THAT HOLDS TOGETHER THE 6-PACK OF BEER I BOUGHT FROM ONE OF BEND’S AMAZING BREWERIES?

Yes, but don’t put them in the recycling bin! Bring them to a local collection center, either the  Visit Bend Visitor Center  or  Crux Fermentation Project .

What makes our beer exceptional

Beer in Bend is some of the best-tasting, cleanest, and most sought-after beer ever. And not just in the region or even the state, but the entire world. Distinct flavors, innovative brewers, countless awards, and exceptional ingredients make our beers so desirable. And it all starts with water. The low mineral content of our fresh, spring-fed water from the Cascade Mountains makes it ideal for brewing any style of beer. Additionally, our proximity to local hop farms ensures a plentiful supply of top-quality hops. These ingredients contribute to the exceptional character of our renowned brews.

Inspired by a bounty of stellar ingredients, brewers unleash a wealth of approachable, balanced, and distinctive beers. Bend is undoubtedly known for IPAs, from styles like West Coast, hazies, doubles, and for the bold, triples. However, you can easily find local pale ales, lagers, porters, sours, and even Belgian-style ales gracing tap lists. No matter how dark, bitter, crisp, or light you like it, you’ll find what satisfies your hop-hankering.

Taps at Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR

Bend Breweries and Brewpubs

Asking us to pick our favorite brewery is like asking, who’s your most beloved pet? It’s nearly impossible. So, instead, we’ll spotlight some iconic front-runners as well as some rising stars to ignite your taste buds. And we also encourage you to discover your best brewery in Bend.

Let’s start with the OG Bend brewery. Deschutes Bre wery was founded in 1988 and is the oldest brewery in Bend. Known for its iconic brews like Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, and Red Chair NWPA, Deschutes also offers a variety of seasonal, classic, and limited releases. You can enjoy Deschutes beer at the Bend Public House downtown, as well as one of the best burgers in town. Or take a tour and sample some beers at the Bend Tasting Room and Beer Garden.

In 2021, Deschutes acquired Boneyard Beer, a brewery known for its clean, balanced, high-quality beers like RPM IPA, Hop Venom, and Diablo Rojo. You can still sample Boneyard’s beers at its original tasting room or head to their brewpub , with over 20 taps and tasty pub-style food.

Occupying the former Boneyard brewing facility is Van Henion Brewing . Founded in 2021, they focus on crafting beers brewers love, like clean lagers and vibrant IPAs. With a collective brewing experience of over 65 years, these three founders bring a wealth of talent. From a former Boneyard master brewer to experienced staff from Deschutes Brewery, Van Henion is a hub of expertise and inventive brews. Stop by the tasting room to sample their clean, crisp beers on draft.

Another former Deschutes employee founded The Ale Apothecary , an artisan brewery tucked into the woods above Bend. Focused on using hyper-local ingredients, including only airborne yeasts, Ale Apothecary beer is the closest thing you can get to Bend’s outdoors in a pint. These barrel-aged wild ales are brewed in small batches to create unique flavors and can be sampled and enjoyed at their tasting room on Century Drive.

Are you noticing a theme yet? The Bend brewing community has a lot of talent sharing taking place.

Beer on tap at Bevel Brewing in Bend, OR

A couple of relative newcomers making a strong splash are Bevel Craft Brewing and Boss Rambler . Bevel is all about the hop-centric experience with a passion for IPAs. Nate and Valarie Doss, the dynamic duo behind Bevel, are world-renowned disc golfers . Drawing inspiration from their travels, they noted every successful and tasty brewery they visited and brought that same magic to Bend. Boss Rambler specializes in lagers, IPAs, and tantalizing sour fruit beers. In fact, you can even get a sour boozy slushy straight from the machine at their westside Beer Club. Boss Rambler also has an expert team of brewers with years of experience from former employees at Boneyard Beer and Crux Fermentation Project.

Speaking of Crux Fermentation Project . These folks have been creating some favorite experimental and innovative beers in Bend. Crux boasts an impressive selection of handcrafted IPAs, as well as unique brews like a Japanese rice lager, barrel-aged imperial stouts, and fruited sours. They also make one of the best non-alcoholic beers around, the No Mo. Head to their family-friendly tasting room, located near the Old Mill District in an old AAMCO transmission shop, for 24+ taps, food carts, and live music with views of the Cascade Mountains.

Outdoor seating and river view at Bend Brewing Co in Bend, OR

Taking it back to the early microbrew years, Bend Brewing Company proudly stands as the second oldest brewery in town. Their pub is located downtown, along the Deschutes River, where you can enjoy a mainstay favorite like Tropic Pines IPA or grab a flight and try them all. And pair your pint with flavorful, classic pub eats from their generous menu.

Coming in as the third oldest is Silver Moon Brewery . Since 2000 they’ve been creating highly anticipated limited releases, unique barrel-aged brews, and longtime favorites like IPA 97. Their brewpub is located downtown, where you can enjoy their beers and onsite food carts for tasty treats.

Silver Moon is also dedicated to the fight against cancer as they’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for research and support through their seasonal F*Cancer campaign and IPA. Now that’s something we can all cheers to!

For those seeking a brewery with a more focused selection of brews and styles, Bend has a few to offer. Porter Brewing brews the only cask-conditioned ales in Central Oregon, and you can find them at their pub, The Cellar , in downtown Bend. They specialize in hand-pumping unfiltered, unpasteurized ales in 20 oz imperial pints and 10 oz half pints. And make sure to pair a homemade savory pie with your beer—you won’t regret it!

Mussels and Belgian Ales at Monkless in Bend, OR

Monkless Belgian Ales specializes in strong ales by brewing Belgian-style delights. Savor a snifter of golden, witbier, or tripel ales. They also serve mouth-watering, hearty European eats at The Brasserie.

Tours for the true beer enthusiast

One of the best ways to experience Bend’s beer culture is to take a brewery tour—Deschutes, Crux, Worthy, and many more offer daily tours, complete with complimentary tastings.

If you’re looking for a more guided experience, Wanderlust Tours creates unique tours that combine outdoor adventures with craft beverages, while The Cycle Pub of Bend is a fun and unique way to experience Bend’s beer scene on two wheels. For an outdoor twist, combine your love for nature with beer on a Brews & Views Paddling Tour courtesy of Wanderlust Tours.

To discover and sample nearly all the breweries in Bend and Central Oregon, guide yourself on the Bend Ale Trail . You can use the free app or pick up a keepsake passport at the Bend Visitor Center and get it stamped at each brewery you visit. The whole trail is comprised of seven territories—complete a territory and win a prize. Complete the whole thing for a bonus prize, plus bragging rights.

Dog-friendly patio at Boss Rambler Beer Club in Bend, OR

Family-friendly breweries

While most breweries in Bend welcome kids, there are a few that really embrace it. For family-friendly breweries, head to Crux, Deschutes, Bend Brewing, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. , and Worthy Brewing Company . In fact, Worthy even has its own “Hopservatory” where the entire family can stargaze through a research-level telescope on clear nights. From kid-friendly menus to outdoor spaces and nearby parks, they make dining with little ones a breeze.

And if your kid has four legs and barks, most breweries with outdoor patios also roll out the welcome mat for dogs. Just be sure to check their dog-friendly policies ahead of time.

Other brew pubs in Bend

Bend is undeniably a haven for beer enthusiasts, with a wide array of breweries. Our pubs offer the opportunity to sample a variety of beers from different local breweries, all while enjoying a flavorful meal.

At Brother Jon’s , enjoy a selection of Northwest beers and savor a delicious meal. This includes tasty sandwiches, homemade soups, and some irresistible house-smoked meats. The pub has three separate dining rooms and a secluded, dog-friendly deck during fair weather. Cabin 22 dishes out breakfast, lunch, and dinner, putting their unique spin on classic pub fare while serving plenty of local beers in their casual pub. Or head over to McMenamins Old St. Francis Pub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a cozy setting. Located in a former Catholic school building, this pub offers hearty fare, handcrafted ales brewed on-site, and weekly seasonal specials. You can also enjoy meals and drinks outdoors in the courtyard on warm days.

Bend’s craft breweries and pubs cater to all tastes, whether you crave hops that bite or the smooth depths of a barrel-aged brew. From crispy and dank to dark and tripled, we’ve got it all. So whether you’re exploring new flavors or prefer a tried-and-true classic, our beer scene will keep your taste buds buzzing with excitement.

While I love beer and brewery hopping, I'd never been on any sort of brewery bus tour and the Bend Brew Bus far exceeded my expectations. We did the 4 hour, 4 brewery tour and it was just as educational and interesting as it was fun and delicious. Our guide, Jared, was very informative and made the day relaxing and interesting. He was helpfully conversational on many topics beyond just beer, but other questions about Bend and activities we were interested in. The brewery guides at each stop were gracious to have us and loved sharing their beers, which was nice to feel welcomed around the brewery scene. I highly recommend the Brewery Bus as a fun activity if you're in Bend looking to check out the awesome brewery scene. Beyond all that, you get to try a lot of great beer!

The Bend Brew Bus was a GREAT tour! If you are a beer lover, beer snob, home brewer, or someone who just appreciates a craft brew, this tour is for you. The guide shares about the city of Bend, Oregon while you travel between breweries and educates you on the different breweries before arriving for the on site tour. The combination of the guides knowledge and the brewers once on site truly make this tour very interesting. Other Perks: - You get to work on your Bend Ale Trail passport (if you visit all the breweries in town you get a Sili Pint) - They provide the driver for you, so no need to worry about a designated driver!! - Some of the guides are home brewers!! Great conversation and they can point you to other great things to check out in Bend The Bend Brew Bus is good for: - Bachelor Party or Bachelorette Party in Bend, Oregon - Getting great exposure to the City of Bend - A girls night or guys night out - A beer lover - Any adult over 21 who wants to have fun Loved the Bend Brew Bus tour and would do it again!

Why pub crawl when you can pub pedal.

If the thought of touring some or all of the breweries in Bend has crossed your mind, but you have yet to do it, here’s your chance. Not only does Bend have a good number of craft breweries , we have a good number of people who know about them and have crafted special brewery tours just for you. While the list has somewhat dwindled (there once was a horse drawn carriage tour) you can still take a tour on a pedal powered pub-on-wheels. And if you’d rather venture out on your own, check out our Hop Map which shows all the Bend breweries and lists some Hop Tours you can take yourself. Either way you get to drink good beer. Cheers!

Cheers!

Guides to Craft Beer Travel & Adventure

A Tour of Bend, Oregon’s Best Breweries

Ken Pishna | January 7, 2024 January 16, 2021 | Adventures , Breweries and Beer , Craft Beer Tourist , Craft Breweries , Travel

Writing a story a few months after it happens either requires notes or a good memory. I don’t have much of either. Regardless, my memories of Bend are some of the best times we’ve had while living on the road. The mountain biking trails here are epic and match up with the almost 30 breweries within and surrounding Bend. And we’ve got the tour of Bend Oregon’s best breweries laid out for you right here.

Bend, Oregon. A mecca of all things outdoors, including the eats and drinks to celebrate with afterward and the coffee shops to fuel you up beforehand. With the Deschutes River running through this beautiful town, and streets that seem to end at one brewery or food truck or another, this is the place to go for adventurous beer lovers.

Bend Oregon Deschutes River copy

We managed to hit up most of the breweries in the area and spent a lot of time boondocking at Phil’s Trailhead where we rode our mountain bikes pretty much every other day. If you must get a lot of work done while spending time here, not sure if this the place to be. There’s so much to see and do, and playing in this natural wonderland is a must. Regardless, somehow we managed to work, eat, play, and drink our way through Bend, Oregon.

Bend Breweries Near Me

And with so many breweries, how do you know which ones to visit? All of them, of course. Did we visit all of them? Most, but not all. Our livers need a break every once in a while. So, while we did not visit all of them, we did do our best to list and link all of them so that you can find all the Bend breweries near you. If you decide you want to visit all of them, well, hopefully, we made that task a little bit easier for your brain to handle.

PRO TIP:   Many small breweries are closed Sun-Weds. They also generally don’t open until late afternoon, so plan accordingly.

We’ll tell you what we recommend and our favorites based off of beer, ambiance, and more. What we won’t tell you is where not to go. Everyone has differing opinions on what creates a favorite place for them and there are so many subjective components that come into play when choosing favorite breweries.

Bend Oregon forest and sunshine copy

If we visit a brewery and the flavor profiles of the beer there are not what our palates are looking for at that time, we’re not going to tell you it’s a bad brewery. But if a brewery has beer that has something off, such as spoilage or poorly made qualities based off of what beer is supposed to be, we’ll tell you that.

Otherwise, you’ll have to embark upon your own Bend brewery tour. Figuring out your favorites is the fun part. We’re simply here to get you started.

🍻  our favorites  –  Honestly, we loved all the breweries, but everyone has favorites, including u s, and we felt that these were some of Bend, Oregon’s best breweries.

Oh, the breweries we visited!

  • The Ale Apothecary 🍻
  • GoodLife Brewing Company

  • Spider City Brewing
  • Boneyard Beer
  • Crux Fermentation Project 🍻
  • Monkless Belgian Ales 🍻
  • Crosscut Warming Hut No. 5 🍻

And the ones we didn’t get to.

There’s only so much time in this world, and oh so many places to see. So, while we didn’t make it to these Bend Breweries, maybe you have. Let us know what you think! We love hearing other people’s stories about brewery visits, not just ours.

A bit of info on the Bend breweries we visited.

We don’t want to color your impressions of the breweries before you get a chance to visit them. But we do want to be a bit helpful so that you know where to start, at least.

THE ALE APOTHECARY

Tucked away in a little shopping center next to GoodLife Brewing, sits the taproom for The Ale Apothecary . This vintage batch oak barrel brewery offers unique naturally sourced and fermented craft brews. Brewed at Paul and Staci’s farm just outside Bend, the Ale Apothecary is a must on a Bend brewery tour and is one of Bend, Oregon’s best breweries. The intimate taproom is a perfect space for a cold winter’s day snuggled up inside, and the quaint patio space is just terrific for those beautiful summer days when you just can’t get enough of Mother Nature. Absolutely one of our most favorite places in Bend and the world, Paul and Staci, and everyone here will make you feel like you live in Bend and belong nowhere else but here.

Be sure to listen to our podcast where we got to sit down with Paul (with some fun input from Staci) to learn all about the farm and his unique brewing process, but we also talked about travel and all the craziness of life.

Ale Apothecary podcast - Paul Arney - Bend Oregon

GOODLIFE BREWING COMPANY

Since you have just visited Paul and Staci next door, take a quick wander down past a few shops, and you’ll come across GoodLife Brewing Company . A good brewpub with good standard beers along with a few surprises, and pub fare to sink your teeth into, this is the perfect next stop on your Bend brewery tour. You can enjoy a sports bar feel on the inside or fully enjoy soaking up some vitamin D on their expansive patio space.

BEND BREWING COMPANY

A staple in Bend’s bountiful craft beer world, Bend Brewing Company is the second oldest brewery in Bend. Offering delectable pub fare that goes above and beyond typical pub fare and beers that have proven themselves time after time, this is another must on a Bend brewery tour. It has a special place in our heart because of its patio where we were able to sit outdoors and chat with a few strangers during a time when it was hard to do so. You all know what time I speak of. So yes, there’s that, but it simply has a feel good vibe. Plus, it’s located downtown next to all the wonderful things that define Bend, including the Deschutes River.

DESCHUTES BREWERY

And speaking of the Deschutes River, you can’t miss one of Bend’s best and oldest breweries, Deschutes Brewery. A staple in Bend’s beer world, it is also one of the breweries that got us hooked on craft beer so many years ago. There’s definitely a special place in our hearts for this brewery, and even though they now have beers all over the country, they still manage to make their spaces feel small and intimate, especially the brewery taproom. Small, but offering all the beers you would expect from Deschutes, you’ll also get specialty and aged beers only available there. We spent some money!

Deschutes Brewery Bend Oregon flight taproom copy

If you’re looking for food and beer from Deschutes, then you must visit their downtown brewpub location, where you’ll find all of the above. Whatever you choose – how about both – you’ll be rewarded with a classic that isn’t going away anytime soon.

WORTHY BREWING COMPANY

With a focus on great beers, of course, the folks at Worthy are also quite focused on sustainability and education. With a greenhouse and hop yard on-site at their original location, along with access to their very own hopservatory to view things greater than the hops – yes, there are things greater than hops, Worthy Brewing Company is worthy of a visit.

We only had the chance to hang at their newest downtown location, but with great food, a quaint patio, and very cool artistic indoor space, this is a brewery to return to again and again. Especially, so we can go back and check out the magic at the original brewhouse. And like I said, Worthy is worthy of your tour of Bend, Oregon’s best bbreweries.

Worthy Brewing Bend Oregon beer and hops copy

IMMERSION BREWING

Located in the Old Mill Shopping District, Immersion Brewing has the beers you want along with the food you need from their made from scratch kitchen. Enjoy a pint of a wide selection of beers from IPAs to fruited sours to ambers, and even some dark beers including some barrel-aged beauties. The patio is inviting, and so is the area.

Immersion Brewing Bend Oregon beer patio copy

BEVEL CRAFT BREWING

Located at the 9th Street Village, surrounded by food trucks, Bevel Craft Brewing is a beautiful place to pull up a seat on a beautiful patio space, grab some grub, and enjoy the beers all around a fire pit when the weather warrants it.

All breweries have a story and Bevel is no different. The owners here have traveled quite extensively in their quest of becoming two of the most recognized professional disc golfers in the world. The beveled edge transformed the traditional frisbee into a powerful flying force, creating the disc. And these two have taken that transformation and innovation into Bevel Craft Brewing. Stop on by to drink some beers from a disc and taste that innovation in a glass.

Bevel Craft Bend Oregon flight copy

SPIDER CITY BREWING

Spider City Brewing grew out of a love for traveling and beer. With two locations serving up all types of beers including IPAs, sour series, stouts, and German and Belgian beers, there’s an atmosphere of inclusivity for everyone here. And just as with the other breweries, Spider City has space for both indoor and outdoor lovers.

Spider City Bend Oregon taproom copy

BONEYARD BEER

Not too far down the road from Spider City, you’ll find a boneyard. Boneyard Beer , that is. This is the place to be when it comes time to enjoy a beer in Bend, pint glass in hand, casually sipping away on the patio that never seems to end.

Collecting old brewing equipment from 13 different breweries across the country, Boneyard Beer was born with one simple goal in mind – to make great beer. And that they have done. Whether you pay a visit here for a pint of their Plum Saison or one of their well-known IPAs, or even a bite to eat, Boneyard may not let you leave for quite some time. After all, time on their patio is time very well spent.

April Boneyard logo and beer Bend Oregon copy

CRUX FERMENTATION PROJECT

The second we walked into Crux Fermentation Project , we knew we wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. Famous for its live music and events in its Craft Beer Park, you won’t be leaving soon either. Literally in the center of Bend, they are housed in an old transmission repair plant, now fixing relationships through beer instead of transmissions. When we were there, we knew we were in the right place; they were showing a ski movie in the beer park, and we had a surprise visit from a friend. Life is good when you’re at a brewery.

From their banished barrel-aged series to their IPAs to everything in between, Crux offers a unique style of brewing with open fermentation, wild yeast strains, and experimental hops. And we’ve got all the information in a podcast and video for you. Click here to listen to more about one of the best breweries in Bend, Oregon.

The Crux of Bend - Jason Randels

MONKLESS BELGIAN ALES

Not too far from Crux – actually most breweries in Bend aren’t too far from each other – is another favorite of ours, Monkless Belgian Ales . Any brewery that has Belgian in the title, I’m in. And while we have yet to visit Belgium, we got pretty close when we walked into this gem of a brewery. Their dark colors and intense architecture, along with their stunning flight presentation was reminiscent of a monastery straight out of Belgian. Not run by monks, though, hence the name Monkless, the brewery is absolutely fantastic for its beer along with its delectable food. Another don’t miss brewery on your Bend brewery tour.

Monkless Belgian Ales Bend Oregon flight copy

CROSSCUT WARMING HUT NO. 5

Ok, yes, this isn’t a brewery, and there are many other taprooms in Bend that are probably awesome, too, but we found Crosscut Warming Hut No. 5 and fell in love the moment we entered the door. Actually, before that. This tap house makes you feel as though you just walked in off the mountain from the best ski day ever! Order a beer from one of their over thirty taps, cozy on up to their fireplace, or wander out into the beer garden. Either way, the place is phenomenal. Combine the beer and the ambiance with gourmet food truck choices in the garden, and you may find yourself choosing the warming hut over your favorite Bend brewery.

Crosscut Warming Hut Bend Oregon taproom copy

Nearby Breweries: Redmond, Sisters, & Sunriver

With several small towns located within mere minutes of Bend, and each of those towns with a brewery or two, and a mountain biking trail or two nearby, these are worth a day trip or two. The only brewery outside of Bend we made it to (we just couldn’t get ourselves to leave Bend and Phil’s Trailhead) was Sunriver Brewing Company. And while all good beer is worth the trip, such as Sunriver Brewing, there was just so much to explore in Bend, that we found no reason to head back that way again. But you might!

Sunriver Brewing Bend Oregon beer glasses on bar copy

Redmond – 17 miles north of Bend

  • Wild Ride Brew
  • Porter Brewing Company
  • Initiative Brewing

Sisters – 22 miles NW of Bend

If you’re need of some new adventures and breweries in and around the Bend area, venture forth my friend. There are always great places. Seek and you shall find!

Recreation, Food, Coffee & Shopping in Bend

Recreation/mountain biking.

There’s so much to do here. From water recreation in Deschutes River and Mirror Pond to hiking to people-watching to shopping to road trips everywhere that lead you to more places to recreate. And did I mention mountain biking? So many trails in Bend and the surrounding areas. You can either ride your favorites again and again, like we did, or explore mere minutes away in Redmond and Sisters, to name just a couple.

One of our favorite pastimes, besides drinking beer, is mountain biking. And we fell in love with Phil’s Trailhead. The trails, the people, the closeness to Bend, and the free camping. For all the deets on Phil’s, check out Trailforks . Also, check out our Bikin’ Bits podcast episodes, where we share all the info about where to ride and what to expect in a short podcast. We’ve got three of them from Phil’s area. All you have to do is scroll down a tiny bit, once you click this link . Either that or just listen to all of the Bikin’ Bits episodes. We’re kinda hilarious!

Biking Bend Oregon April August Ken

Food, Coffee & Shopping

Again, there’s so much to do here, including places to eat, drink (beer, always) coffee, and shop for necessities and all the things you want to buy but don’t need. While most of our food budget goes into craft breweries, meaning when we find a brewery with food this is also where we usually eat, there are a few places that we managed to get to that aren’t breweries.

Places like Looney Bean Coffee in downtown Bend with an expansive green grass patio space right next to Mirror Pond. Places like the Old Mill District with shopping and dining. Places like The Lot with an outdoor space, a bar with craft beer, food trucks, and heated seats to keep your butt warm on those cool Bend evenings. The Lot was really cool and one of our favorite places, but those heated seats made it over-the-moon cool.

Places like all of Bend, really. We fell in love with this town. We think you will, too.

Now, go out there and create your own story, your own epic brewery tour of Bend, Oregon. And let us know what you love.

Top 5 Tours to Take in Bend, Oregon

Bend is a nature-lover’s paradise blended with a hop-head’s dream; nowhere else will you find this much craft beer and this many outdoor activities. The city’s been growing quickly, reaching 100,000 residents in 2020, and with the growth comes plentiful opportunities for adventure. From walking the very halls that brew your favorite beer to any number of adrenaline-inducing sports, we have you covered for the five best types of guided tours in Bend, Oregon.

1. Bend Brewery Tours

Occasionally around town, you’ll hear Bend referred to as “Beervana” or “Beertown USA,” and for good reason. Bend has one of the highest concentrations of craft breweries in the country, boasting a brewery for every 3,000 residents. That number is constantly changing due to the growth of the city and the addition of new breweries every year, but rest assured that there’s plenty of beer to go around. Mix in the dozens of cideries, distilleries and kombucha brewers, and Bend has a variety of craft brews that rivals any major U.S. city. Thirsty yet? Check out some of our favorite brewery tours below, and be sure to explore all the great breweries and cideries in Bend year-round.

The Bend Ale Trail takes participants through a mind-boggling 24 different breweries across town (and beyond) in seven distinct territories. This is less of a guided tour, and more of a checklist that you can mark off throughout your stay in Bend. Each stop on this massive excursion has a paired recommended activity; a stop at Monkless Belgian Ales near the Old Mill pairs well with a quick kayak tour of the nearby Deschutes River, for example. Using these pairings, visitors can plan their trip to Bend around both trying new brews and mixing things up with outdoor activities. Each stop also comes with a chance to get a pass on your beer passport, and each complete territory sampled provides guests with surprise prizes. To keep things responsible, the Bend Ale Trail also rewards designated drivers with a prize of their own.

Cyclepub through Bend

The Cycle Pub of Bend offers a combination of two Bend favorites: cycling and drinking. The Cycle Pub, a fourteen-passenger bike/bar combo that is actually powered by pedals, takes participants to Silver Moon Brewing, a Cycle Pub sponsor, and allows guests to weigh in to plan the route from there, allowing a group to plan out a two-hour excursion on the fly.

Another option is the Taste of Bend Tour, offered by Let It Ride eBike Tours . Another two-hour excursion, this tour is a guided tasting experience from the seat of an easy-pedal electric bike. The professional guide will lead you through Bend’s neighborhoods to find scrumptious bites and of course, sips of your favorite craft drinks.

Helicopter tour over the Cascades

2. Helicopter Tours in Bend, Oregon

You read that right. Tours in Central Oregon and more specifically, the views they offer, are mostly limited by how high in elevation you go, or if you find clearings with great views. However, visitors to Bend can forgo these restrictions and get the best views possible from the seat of a helicopter. Here are some reliable options to get a bird’s-eye-view of Bend and the surrounding natural landscape.

Fly Cascades offers a selection of helicopter tours year-round, depending on what guests are in the mood for. Flights are offered that showcase the city itself, the nearby volcanic flow that looks like a black river frozen in time, the nearby Cascade Mountain peaks and even a flight dedicated to spotting Sasquatch. For avid photographers, be sure to book a flight with the doors intentionally kept open so you can take some of the most amazing aerial snapshots while safely strapped into your seat.

3. Bend Bike Tours

Would it really be a trip to Bend if you didn’t ride a bike? Bike tours in Central Oregon come in two main varieties: mountain biking and road cycling. Here in Bend, you can experience both.

Wheel Fun Rentals offers a self-guided bike tour through the Old Mill that takes approximately two to three hours to complete. Pedal to your heart’s content through tunnels painted with colorful murals, bridges overlooking the Deschutes River, and get the chance to explore one of the most popular areas in Central Oregon. Alternatively, this trip is available with electric bikes, as well. These bikes allow you to adjust your resistance level, allowing you to cater the bike to your needs. Whether you want a workout or a leisurely ride, they’ve got you covered.

If you’re ready to leave the city limits and check out all that amazing mountain biking you’ve heard so much about, check out Cog Wild , a tour company offering guided rides through scenic mountain trails (May to October, depending on snowpack). A family business, Cog Wild offers guided tours for riders of all ages and skill levels, and even offers some tours that are specifically designed to teach a certain skill; whether that be riding switchbacks, cornering with some speed or jumping the bike through the air, your guide will help you learn along the way. A particularly exciting ride, and one that your friends will be impressed with, is the tour that takes riders all the way from Mount Bachelor to Bend. This ride is up to six hours in length and can be catered to your group’s skill level. Along with the professional guide, the ride comes with sandwiches from a local bakery, healthy and locally made snacks, a Cog Wild water bottle and complimentary craft drinks from both Deschutes Brewery and Humm Kombucha.

Cog Wild bike tours

4. Off-Road ATV Tours in Bend

As an outdoor paradise, much of the landscape around Bend, from the Deschutes National Forest to the expanses of the high desert, still feels undiscovered. So much of this land can be experienced by taking the path less traveled, even if that path is bumpy and uneven. There are plenty of options for off-road ATV tours in Bend; one of the most fun things to do in Central Oregon.

The Bend Tour Company, in collaboration with Outriders NW , offers several guided off-roading adventures for the whole family each summer. The tours take groups through the scenic Cascade Lakes, the Deschutes National Forest, expanses of lava rock to the south, the Bend Badlands to the east or through high desert terrain. That last tour, the high desert one, is actually a full-day experience that includes cave exploration and plenty of opportunities to walk around and take in the amazing views.

For more options, the Octane Rental Company offers ATV rentals for self-guided adventures.

5. Bend Whitewater Rafting Tours

Whitewater Rafting in Central Oregon should be on any would-be visitor’s bucket list for the summer. Here in Bend, where the mighty Deschutes runs through, there are more than a few options for a guided, adrenaline-inducing whitewater adventure.

Sun Country Tours is a trusted name, and they offer several options for whitewater fun from Bend. While most of the whitewater sections of the Deschutes exist outside of Bend, all of these tours depart from Bend, making them easy inclusions in your Bend itinerary. The Big Eddy Thriller and the Raft N’ Brew (the same float as the Big Eddy Thriller plus beer tastings) are both popular options that can be squeezed into an action packed, multi-sport day. Both trips are guided by a professional who’ll navigate the river and show your group safety techniques on the rapids so you can responsibly enjoy the thrill. Sun Country also offers larger guided floats, such as the All Day Adventure and Mckenzie Magic, which take about nine hours and seven hours, respectively, and both depart from Bend.

Boneyard Brewing Co. in Bend, Oregon may not be kid-friendly, and there is no menu. This place only serves beer, but this focus may just make them one of the top Bend, Oregon breweries to visit if you’re thirsty.

Boneyard Beer first started out in 2010, housed in an old auto shop located in the historical district of the city. The owner, Tony Lawrence, collected old brewing equipment from over a dozen breweries, creating his own little “boneyard,” which is where the name comes from.

Eventually, he and his co-founders, Clay and Melodee Storey, used this equipment to create their beers, slowly replacing the old fermenters with new ones as their business grew. But they kept their 20-barrel system, which is still in place today.

They brew 17 different beers and are now expanding their new facility to increase their beer-making capacity. But even as they grow, they won’t change their main focus, which is creating “balanced, hoppy beer.”

Monkless Belgian Ales prides themselves on tradition. Originally, beer was brewed in monasteries, to help provide sustenance to the people. But the boiling of the water that went into the beers also helped to reduce water-borne epidemics that plagued those in the sixth century.

Though there are no monks at Monkless, the spirit of the brewing process and the patience needed to create the perfect brews remains the same. They focus only on brewing Belgian-style ales here, with their Dubbel Or Nothing, The Trinity, and Meet Your Maker brews, among others. They also have seasonal beers available for those who like to sample new flavors.

Though the brewery itself doesn’t have food service, there is a food truck that parks on the property on Fridays, so you can snack on some Belgian Frites, Bratwurst, and other European delicacies to match your favorite brew.

Established in 2011, Ale Apothecary was founded by Paul Arney. He had been brewing beer for about six years at another company but decided he wanted to try out brewing beer in his own unique way. He started slow, developing his process on a small scale to create the perfect flavors.

His process includes fermenting his beers in wooden barrels, sometimes taking a few years until they have reached the perfect fermentation, all done in Arney’s 500 square foot garage. His signature beers include Sahalie, La Tache, Sahati, El Cuatro, and Ralph.

Bridge 99 Brewery was named after a local landmark, Lower Bridge, which was also called Bridge 99. Owners Trever Hawman and Rod Kramer also liked that it reminded them of the song “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.”

These two friends began their company as a hobby, using eco-friendly techniques and fresh ingredients from local sources. As demand grew, so did their business, which led to their current location for their brewery and tasting room.

As well as making a variety of different beers, such as Wizard Falls IPA, Rock Crawler Red, and Bull Trout Stout, these innovative men also make sure their company gives back to the environment that supports them. Avid Cider, formerly known as Atlas Cider, is one of the few Bend, Oregon breweries that don’t make beer. Instead, their focus is on hard cider, which is made by fermenting apples and other fruits. This is how they create their Dry Organic Apple Cider, Pom-Cherry Cider, Blackberry Cider, and Apricot Cider.

The idea to make cider sprouted when owner Dan McCoy went on a backpacking trip to Europe, where his wife Samantha encouraged him to try the local cider. Upon their return home, Dan began learning everything he could about fruit fermentation and everything else he needed to create the best product possible.

Their taproom serves all their best ciders, plus some beer for those die-hards. There is a pool table, arcade games, and TVs for you to watch the game. If you’re hungry, a Food Kart is onsite.

Red Tank Cider Company

Red Tank Cider is the very first cider company to begin brewing in Bend. They started small, using the knowledge they had to brew up the best cider they possibly could, starting from scratch. And they never believe their cider is perfect, which is why the process of testing and tasting never ends.

The cider that comes out of their brewhouse is made with only the simplest ingredients, including apples, yeast, and natural sulfites. There are no chemicals added, so the cider is completely natural, making it safe to drink and safe for the environment.

Even their tasting room is simple. It is only open for a few hours a day, and only a few days a week. But if you’re interested, this should give you more than enough time to sample their four premier ciders, Happy, Roughneck, Pear Bear, and Chops!, plus any seasonal brews they have available.

The brewhouse is located on the east side of Bend, but unfortunately, if you want a taste of their delicious ciders, you can’t do it here. There is no tasting room on the property, so you’ll have to do your tasting elsewhere.

But it is still worth it to hunt Rimrocks brews down, especially if you love delicious cider. All the ciders made by this company are handcrafted in small batches, using locally grown apples. These batches are fermented slowly, letting the natural process do the work. This gives the flavors time to mellow and blend together, creating the perfect full taste.

Kelly Roark began Tumalo Cider in 2007, right in his own home. He collected free apples in trash cans, then pressed them himself, with some help from his friends, to create a tasty homebrew. But he realized he could turn his love of cider-making into a business.

He partnered with Jeff Bennett, who helped him with all the formalities, such as logos, licenses, and other necessary paperwork. Eventually, they build themselves a proper cider house, using eco-friendly and sustainable materials to keep their business healthy as well as profitable.

The cider is brewed in small batches, creating dry, yet complex apple flavors. They have two main ciders available, the Dry and the Semi-Sweet. But they are planning to add more brews to their list in the future, all of which will be uniquely inspired by the landscape of Central Oregon and traditional cider-making techniques.

But the brewing itself happens in Sunriver. Either way you go, you can try out their Rippin Northwest Ale, Fuzztail Hefeweizen, Vicious Mosquito IPA, or Paddy’s Irish Stout.

If you’re hungry, the pub serves great food with an artisan touch. Sunriver has a wood-fired smoker at the brewery, which they use to create mouth-watering smoked meat. The chef at the pub also makes all their dressings, sauces, and stocks from scratch. They source as much of their menu as possible locally for the freshest food. And there is a Kid Zone to keep the little ones busy.

Phone: 541-593-3007 Address: 57100 Beaver Dr., Sunriver Visit Website Go There For: The Kid Zone is great to keep your children entertained while you try out the fantastic brews or sit down to your meal.

Kobold Brewing

Kobold Brewing was originally one of the Bend, Oregon breweries. Steve Anderson began brewing beer in his 3rd Street home for himself. But over time, he designed a 2-barrel nano-brewery system and began distributing beer around Bend and Redmond.

A year later, he and his wife Heather decided to grow their operation, moving their business to Redmond. They opened a taphouse, while still brewing beer at home. But a bigger system was needed, so production of a new brewery began in Redmond as well, which is still under construction.

To try Kobold beer, a visit to The Vault Taphouse is a must. You can try out all their best brews, including their Crooked Fate IPA, K-Juice Double IPA, Kobald Bohemian Pilsner, and 3rd Street Cred Red Ale.

They don’t make their own food, but the Westside Taco Co and Tots! food trucks are parked right on their patio to fill your tummy. You can also get delivery from another local restaurant, or bring your own food in to snack on while you sample the tasty brews.

Phone: 541-678-3884 Address: 1470 NW 3rd St Visit Website Go There For: There’s a great outdoor patio with two unique food trucks to sate your appetite.

Best Ways to Enjoy Beer in Bend

While you’re checking out the Bend, Oregon breweries, you may also want to check out the local beer-serving events in the area to get a taste of what Bend life is all about.

Explore Local Pubs

Just because a local pub doesn’t make its own beer, doesn’t mean you won’t find any local brews there. Many of them serve the very same beer you’ll find at the Bend, Oregon breweries, as well as those from the surrounding areas. So, if the brewery is closed or doesn’t allow tours, you can still sample what they have to offer at any of the pubs the city.

Bend Ale Trail

If you want to check out all the Bend, Oregon breweries, you can try touring them along the Bend Ale Trail. To do this, first grab a map and a passport from the Bend Visitor Center, the ticket mill found in the Old Mill District, or a brochure rack.

Then start walking the trail on the map, or find a tour operator who will get you a seat on a bus, or in a Towncar. You can even ride in a horse-drawn carriage if you’d like. But please, don’t drive yourself if you plan on visiting a few locations, or having a few at just one of them.

At each brewery, get a stamp on your passport. Once you hit ten stamps, you can head back to the Bend Visitor Center to get a Bend Silipint souvenir. If you visit all 16 breweries, you can add a Bend Ale Trail bottle opener to your prize as well.

Bend Brewfest

Bend Brewfest is an annual celebration of craft beer. Local Bend, Oregon breweries, as well as those all over Central Oregon, have their beer sampled by visitors. There are also cider houses and wineries that bring out their best brews for guests to enjoy.

This festival has reached its 16th year, showcasing the best brews Oregon has to offer, many of which you can’t get anywhere else. You do need to purchase a souvenir mug to do any of the tastings. It costs $20, but you get 5 tasting tokens with it. There are also a few local vendors serving food, and children are welcome until 5 pm.

Central Oregon Beer Week

This 10-day celebration of craft beer takes place every May, right around the Memorial Day weekend. There are specific events which take place each day, including a kick-off bash, special tastings at many of the Bend, Oregon breweries, and much more.

To make your week even more memorable, you can check in, which unlocks the Central Oregon Beer Week Untappd badge, which lets you rate your favorite breweries and the beer they serve.

Little Woody Barrel Aged Beer & Whiskey Festival

This weekend festival celebrates barrel-aged products, including beer and cider, that can all be found in the Northwest. 25 local and regional brewers bring their best small batch brews to be sampled.

It takes place right on the lawn of the Deschutes Historical Museum, so you can enjoy the views and a bit of Bend history as you sip your favorites. Live music keeps you entertained throughout the festival as well.

Another fun aspect of this festival is that they are giving out limited edition gnome goblets to the first 300 people who show up dressed as gnomes.

Bend Ale Fest

The Bend Ale Fest takes place in the Northwest Crossing Neighborhood, where guests can sample over 40 different beers from 20 local Bend, Oregon breweries. This year, the event takes place on November 10, from 11 am to 8 pm. The Fest is also located at the finish line of the Bend Ale Run, so if you take part in that event, you’ll likely want a tasty brew to cool you down.

Zwickelmania

Zwickelmania Oregon Brewery Tour lets guests check out breweries in the Portland area on one weekend, and then the breweries in Central, Eastern, and Southern Oregon, plus a few other areas, the following weekend.

The breweries who participate in the event offer special treats for their visitors, including a meet-and-greet with the brewer, tours, tastings, and even some food and beer pairings. Best of all, this event is free.

Bend Oktoberfest

Despite its name, Bend Oktoberfest takes place on a weekend in September. There, you can enjoy the beer supplied by many of the Bend, Oregon breweries. But there is so much more than beer here.

There are a bunch of fun games and crazy events, such as a wiener dog race, the renegade roller derby, and a yodeling contest, plus some traditional music and square dancing. This is another free event, and the whole family is welcome.

The best breweries in Bend Oregon: family friendly brewery tours and brew pubs

I’m going to keep this short and sweet, but really helpful. Bend, Oregon is amazeballs. I don’t need to tell you that if you’re reading this already, but there you have it. One of the things that we loved, was the welcoming nature EVERYWHERE to us dads with our kids. We especially enjoyed all of the family friendly breweries in Bend. There may be non-family friendly breweries, but we didn’t find any. We’ve pared down the countless brewpubs and beer halls to our favorites.

Did you not know family friendly breweries were a thing? Yeah: wine tasting, distilleries, family friendly breweries, all of these are ways to encourage people to go out and explore the local culture and craft. Brewing is actually a science and an art, so teaching kids about making beer (not about drinking it) is a new way to plant the seed of creativity for later in life. Our kids loved doing the family Bend brewery tours; maybe because they like to taste raw grains or maybe because they like to hear about science. Who knows, but the family friendly breweries in Bend were great to do with kids.

How to visit breweries in Bend, OR

First off, always have a designated driver (DD). Whether you’re a group of adults or you’re doing a family friendly brewery trip, you always need to think about safety first. If it’s you doing the Bend breweries solo, then take advantage of Lyft (use code TRAVELDADS05319) or Uber to ensure that you’re being safe while enjoying the best breweries in Bend.

Don’t forget also, you need to set your Out-of-Office if you’re doing brewery tours in Bend. Our friends at 10 Barrel Brewing Co can help with that…

Once you’ve got your transportation and OOO set up, there are two ways to do brewery tours in Bend:

  • Visit a different brewery for each meal during your visit to Bend, OR
  • Set aside a day or two over the course of your stay to participate in the Bend Ale Trail passport game, collecting all 18 brewery passport stamps
Bonus : Visit Bend has set up special DD Passports for the Bend Ale Trail also, so whoever is in charge of transportation can still have fun.

We opted for the first choice of seeking out the best breweries in Bend with kids and visited during each of our meals. Being there for a week, we had ample chances to try many great brewpubs and ale houses.

“Didn’t the kids get sick of doing family brewery tours?” Nope, not at all. The kids know that breweries make the best burgers, and a good number of breweries and wineries have fun stuff set up for kids, so it makes incorporating brew-stops into your travel plans easy and fun for everyone.

As you’re plotting out your trip to Bend itinerary , take a look at the map of breweries and you can actually plan your lunches and dinners to happen in conjunction with daily hikes and time on the river.

Note : each of the family friendly breweries we recommend below has a Google Maps link, so tapping that link from your phone should open your map program for easy driving directions.

How many breweries are in Bend, Oregon?

As of this moment, Fall of 2018, there are about 25 breweries in Bend, and then beyond Bend there are more breweries in Redmond, Oregon, Sisters and on.  Central Oregon knows that it’s in a unique position of being the hub for outdoor fun and is the crossroads of farming. Put together a culture that loves micro brews and some of the best hops around, and you’re set up for an amazing, prolific brewery culture.

As you check out our list of the most family friendly breweries in Bend, be sure to let us know if there’s one we missed that we need to include or visit on our next trip to Bend. We love to find new places and share the work passionate breweries are doing!

Best Breweries in Bend, Oregon

Now, for our list of our favorite spots to enjoy the micro brew culture in Central Oregon. We feel that these are the best breweries in Bend, but there are so many and everybody has a different taste in beer, so if you drive past one that’s not on our list, you can still stop there and then share it with us!

Crux Fermentation Project

Before we even made it to Bend, Oregon people were telling us that we needed to go to Crux Fermentation Project . Okay then, we love a strong and consistent recommendation. We were not disappointed! The Crux brewery is a multifaceted experience. Inside is industrial meets steampunk. Outside is play space / beer garden.

We started inside and checked out the brewing operations, then we sat at one of the community tables for lunch. They had a great kids menu and an even better adult menu. Chris and I shared the amazeballs charcuterie platter and it changed our lives forever. Now we expect every meat and cheese plate to be exceptionally local, exceptionally craft, and ALWAYS to come with pickled mustard seeds. I didn’t know that was missing from our lives. #lessonlearned

Outside, there was a beer truck like you’d see at a street fair, a sausage truck with a steady flow of customers, a fire pit, lawn games, and lots of space to hang with the family or friends. The kids didn’t want to leave… so we got extra beers.

Notable experience :  this was the brewery where we realized how inclusive and welcoming Bend is. If you’re not part of a gay family you might not fully get it, but there are few more subtly demeaning or judgmental instances than somebody blatantly asking if you’d like separate checks. Not only did we realize that at no time during our trip to Bend were we asked about separate checks, but the staff even referred to us at “the dads” and treated us like a completely normal family. That made us so happy, and now that we know what normal feels like, it puts every other interaction into perspective.

Beer to try :  Gimme Mo – Not Just Another IPA. This was an awesome beer with the primary qualities of an IPA but brighter and more fun, kind of fruity actually. Delish on a hot day in Bend playing corn-hole with the kids

Worthy Brewing Company

Of all the breweries in Bend, or anywhere for that matter, Worthy Brewing stands out as the most unique, most interesting and most exciting of all family friendly breweries we’ve been to. Between making the brewery tour fun for kids (including lemonades) to being a living example of sustainability and eco-consciousness, Worthy Brewing captures the spirit of Bend and the future of community centered business practices. I know, we totally drank the Kool-Aid… I mean the Strata IPA.

Worthy Brewing is a must as you tour breweries in Bend for several super cool reasons:

  • The hop vines, greenhouse and kitchen garden
  • The outdoor patio and performance space
  • Great food and wood fired pizzas
  • Broad range of quality, interesting beers
  • The Hopservatory

Yes, that last one is the big kicker for anybody who needs some perspective in life. Go, do your brewery tour and have dinner, and then when it gets dark, head up into the observatory, the Hopservatory, and see just how small you are in the grand scheme of the universe. Getting to actually look at Saturn with our own eyes was amazing. It really is another planet, another world, and we got a glimpse of that at Worth Brewing. A brewery.

Beers to try :  if you just want a quality, standard beer, go for the Prefunk American Pale Ale. If you want to see what happens when you add fruits and fresh hops, you HAVE TO TRY the Kama Citrus and Stata IPAs. Both are impressive for being complex and interesting while adding adding fruit elements. Well executed.

Deschutes Brewery

I know, how can you even think of Bend, Oregon without thinking of Deschutes Brewery . I remember being 21 and first learning about beer and knowing that Mirror Pond Pale Ale was good. But then you actually go to the brewery or the brew pub and you see that they have SO MANY types of beer that you can’t get out of state, and it’s beer boggling.

For the full Bend brewery tour experience, go to the Deschutes Brewery and Tasting room right off the Deschutes River, on the way out of town to Cascade Lakes Highway. For an impressive beer selection, great food and event space, the Downtown Public House is centrally located with lots of street parking nearby. The brewpub atmosphere is great with kids, especially for dinner, as it’s loud enough that you can relax. The staff we met were all attentive and friendly, and they took time to interact with the kids. Perfect brewery for tastings or a good meal.

Google Maps links:   Deschutes Brewery Downtown Public House

Beers to try :  Fresh Haze all the way. Maybe we were just really into fresh hoppy beers when we were there or maybe Fresh Haze really was the single best beer in Bend, I don’t know, but I would love to have that available at our home in St. Augustine.

Bend Brewing Company

You can’t go wrong when you’ve found great food AND outdoor play space with shady seating on a river. We were recommended to visit Bend Brewing Company by our tour guide with Wanderlust Tours, and he was so awesome on the trail we had to trust him about which breweries in Bend we needed to visit.

Located in the downtown part of Bend, not in the Old Mill District (use the map link below), Bend Brewing Company is the perfect afternoon brewery stop. If you want to hang out inside or outside, there is ample seating. If you’re there just to do beer flights, that’s fine too, and you can do beer tasting at the bar or outside on the lawn. The kids loved the open space to be crazy and play corn hole in the shade.

Beers to try :  t he second oldest of the breweries in Bend, they know their beer here. They offer both draft and canned beer at the brewpub. Exploregon Hoppy Lager and Tropic Pines Juicy IPA were of course our favs. Bend beers don’t disappoint.

10 Barrel Brewing

We first came across 10 Barrel Brewing beers in Westport, Washington when we were staying at the LOGE Camps location on the Washington coast. Just a short bike ride from the LOGE Camps Entrada Lodge in Bend was the actual brewery. Again, rocking the outdoor brewery experience, 10 Barrel Brewing Co is set up to either get you relaxing in the sun or around the outdoor fire pit.

And food. What was it? Was it a stromboli that was so delicious? It was! 10 Barrel Brewing has got the pizza biz down to a delicious art, but the Cubano Stromboli was where it’s at. And it was huge enough that there were leftovers to eat by the pool later.

Bonus :  10 Barrel Brewing Co is close to Columbia Park, which is our favorite park in Bend . Enjoy some lunch and beers at 10 Barrell and then go relax at the park and let the kids play on the coolest playground in Bend, or take a walk along the Deschutes River.

Beers to try :  hold onto your hats, because this may be the only Pilsner I ever recommend besides from Icicle Brewing in Leavenworth, WA . Maybe it’s because the Smooth Talker reminds me so much of an IPA (my favorite), but it’s delicious. The other hit is the Sasquatch. The name says it all.

Pint on Patio at 10 Barrel Brewing Bend 1

Cascade Lakes Brewing Company

So good we bought a growler. We don’t always buy a grower from every brewery tour or brewpub, but when we do it’s for a good reason. Cascade Lakes Brewing Company Lodge is found right at the start of the Cascade Lakes Highway, so it’s the perfect end to a day of hiking out in the Deschutes National Forest or an afternoon stop before biking around town.

If you asked our kids which was their favorite of all the breweries in Bend, they’d either say Worthy Brewing or Cascade Lakes Brewing. Why? Because the Lodge location (map link below) has vintage arcade games, that’s why. We try to limit the technology that sucks the kids in but when the dads are drawn to video games and they see us beyond excited about Ms. Pacman, you give in.

The food and the beer was good too, but having such a fun splash of nostalgia mixed into the Bend brewery experience really was a bonus.

Beers to try :  the Pineapple Kush. We bought a growler of it to enjoy at our hotel. Such a unique beer with a wonderfully subtle pineapple back end. Well done, Cascade Lakes Brewing. Well done.

Entry to Cascade Lakes Brewing Company Bend Oregon 1

Other notable family friendly breweries in Bend include Silver Moon Brewing in the northern part of town, Good Life Brewing Co (roll up walls for summertime) and Sunriver Brewing Co (more roll up walls), both of which are on the west side of the river. All are welcoming to families and are great fore adults looking for the best beer in Bend.  And if you’re thinking about a totally different brewery experience, check out McMenamin’s Old St Francis School , which is a combination brewpub, hotel, and public gathering place.

Family friendly breweries in Bend are not lacking in the slightest. The town serves as a great example of a progressive city that incorporates local craft brewing, travel, sustainability, cuisine, and fun. And now I think it’s time for us to head back to Bend…

Self-Guided Brewery Tour In Bend, Oregon

By Author Emily Junda

Posted on Last updated: November 2, 2023

Categories Oregon , Travel Guides

One of Jake’s and my favorite things to do in a new city besides hiking is brewery hopping! We love trying new craft beers all around the area. Cities are a great spot for this activity because brewery locations tend to be closer together, it’s easy to get safe transportation to and from, and has a wide range of delicious beers to try! And one thing Bend has done exceptionally well, is have tons of small micro-breweries in the area! So we decided to do our own self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon.

Em holding a beer at Bend Brewing Company is one of the stops on our self-guided brewery tour in bend

When we visited Bend, Oregon we rented a tandem bike and had easy access to a bunch of different breweries. And Bend has incredible views along the Deschutes River with snowy mountains in the distance. I should note, our favorite style of beer are IPA’s, pale ales, fruity beers and Hazy IPAs. So this tour is guided toward those styles of beer and we will let you know what we got and if we suggest it!

That is not to say that any of the breweries we visited only excelled in those styles of beer, but we didn’t branch too far from our favorite styles of beer. Let’s dive into this self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon.

This post may contain affiliate links. Disclosure policy .

Transportation For A Self-Guided Brewery Tour In Bend

Jake and Em riding a tandem bike on our self-guided brewery tour in Bend

First, let’s figure out the best mode of transportation for you to get around safely on this self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon. There are tons of great options in the area, whether it be by foot, bike, taxi, or bus.

Walking is by far the cheapest way to visit all the different breweries in Bend, OR and also the safest. But, it is also going to take the longest to get to and from each brewery. But many of the breweries are close enough together you can easily walk between a few.

If you have your own bike, then this is a great mode of transportation to the different breweries. If you are just visiting Bend, Oregon then you could rent a bike from a local shop. We rented a tandem bike from Wheel Fun Rentals – Old Mill District (they have tons of other bike rental styles, such as tandem, cruiser, surrey, electric, mountain bikes, etc). But there are also other rental shops in town such as Bend Oregon Bike Rentals , Hutch’s Bicycles , and Let It Ride eBikes .

But just be aware that under Oregon Law cyclists are still capable of getting a DUI, so don’t continue biking if you are over the legal limit.  We typically lock the bike past a certain point and continue on foot.

Cycle Pub Tour:

Another super fun way to get around to all the different breweries in Bend is to book a Cycle Pub Tour . But you might need to be traveling to the different breweries as a group. There are two different bike sizes: Big Bike 8-14 riders or Small Bike = 4-6 riders. This tour looks super fun but definitely comes with a higher price tag. Plus there is a time limit for this tour, so you will probably need to plan our your route in advance to build in a time frame at each brewery.

Uber/Lyft/Taxi:

Another great option is to grab an Uber, Lyft or Taxi between breweries or at the end of the night back to your home base. You could easily uber/Lyft/taxi from your home or where you are staying into town and walk around to a few different breweries & then just uber/Lyft/taxi back home later.

Cascades East Transit:

Public transportation is a very easy way to get around, but the bus obviously don’t stop out front of each brewery. Therefore, you will need to navigate the best route and stop to get off for each one and mostly have to walk a ways to each one. But it is a very great option for staying on a budget and not driving yourself!

Check out their schedule to see which bus schedule works best for you.

Designated Driver:

The best option of all, is if you have a member of your group that wants to join the brewery tour but doesn’t want to partake in the drinking, therefore he/she can drive you to each brewery!

Bend Ale Trail

bend brew tour

The Bend Ale Trail is a program that leads you to all the best breweries in the city. There are seven different territories within Bend w/ multiple breweries in each territory. So you can get a different taste of the areas around Bend depending on what breweries you are most interested in.

The Bend Ale Trail can either be downloaded via the app or you can print it out. You will then need a stamp from the breweries you visit. If you visit all the breweries in 1 of the 7 territories, bring your Ale Trail Map to the Visit Bend Tourist Information Center . and you will get a prize. The more territories you finish the more prizes you will win!

In our specific self-guided brewery tour in Bend, we don’t finish any territory. So you will have to add a couple if you want to qualify to win a fun prize through the Bend Ale Trail!

In this specific self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon I am going to suggest the route we took , because I think it went very smoothly and we loved the breweries. But if you look up a few of the breweries I suggest as add-ons which suit your taste better, you can always mix and match some of the breweries. But the list doesn’t just stop here, there are tons more breweries in the area.

Note : Jake and I did this self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon over the span of one day. So we maxed out at 5 breweries and even split a beer at a brewery so we could safely get home on our tandem bike! Our best suggestion is to gauge your limit, you can always sit out a round, split a beer with someone, or try a delicious Kombucha instead.  So go at your own pace and just go to as many breweries that feels comfortable.

First, we rented a tandem bike from Wheel Fun Rentals in the Old Mill District. We then headed North up the river to Silver Moon Brewing Company.  This is longest ride of our tour, so we wanted to start with it.  It’s a beautiful cruise along the Deschutes River, and then through Downtown Bend.

Emily holding a beer at Silver Moon Brewing which was one of our favorite breweries on our self-guided brewery tour in Bend

This was my favorite brewery in the whole self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon. If you are starting around lunch time they have a great selection of delicious food truck options outside.

For beer, Jake and I got the Simon Says Hazy and Mango Daze which were super delicious! The Simon Says Hazy was really juicy and citrus notes, and the Mango Daze was light, fruity and super refreshing!

Silver Moon Brewing had a sweet outdoor patio, tables, fire pits, shade from the sun, and cornhole. The location is right on the highway, but the music they played was plenty to drown out the noise. They even have a stage set up, so check their events tab to see if they have a fun band playing or unique event going on. We would highly suggest having this brewery be part of your self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon.

(If you chose to visit Deschutes Brewing Company , this would be your next brewery stop. Jake and I have tried their beers before, and wanted to try some of the smaller micro-breweries, so we decided to skip this one)

The menu at Bend Brewing Company

Next, we headed over to Bend Brewing Company which had an awesome outdoor section on the grass with a beautiful view of the Deschutes River. When you get there, the hostess directs you towards open seating on the lawn for just drinks, or will get you a full-service table on the deck or patio if you want food and drinks.

If you just want beers then you can order up at the bar and seat yourself outside.  It’s a large grassy area, so you could always sit down on the grass if no tables are available.  The lawn slopes down towards the river, and theres a good mix of shade and sun.

For beers, Jake and I got the Future Living IPA and Tropic Pines IPA. Future Living is a solid citrus IPA and the Tropic Pines was super hazy. We really liked both, and the outdoor atmosphere is really great.  So again, we would definitely suggest adding this brewery to your self-guided Brewery Tour in Bend, Oregon. You could also order a flight if you were interested in trying more than one beer!

Worthy Brewing Company

A view from Worthy Brewing Beers & Burgers which was a very city style brewery on our self-guided brewery tour in bend

Worthy Brewing Company has a couple of different locations, but we visited the one on Brooks St downtown which is literally a short walk away from Bend Brewing Company.

It’s also a bonus if there is a farmer’s market (usually on Wednesdays) because you literally walk right through in order to get here from Bend Brewing Company.

The atmosphere of Worthy Brewing’s downtown Bend location is more of a small city-style setup with a small outdoor patio on the sidewalk or a hip, bright-colored indoor seating section.

We both got Hazy IPA’s, the “Hazy IPA” and Lazy Day IPA. The Hazy IPA was pretty solid, and the Lazy Day was a lighter ABV, so it was very drinkable.

This is not Worthy Brewing Company’s main location, so if you want to try their beers but want more space and a larger outdoor patio, then the main location is on Bellevue Dr is a better option.

You could make the brewery tour a bit shorter here and add in Deschutes Brewing Co , to make it a fun 4-stop self-guided brewery tour in Bend. Or if you are like us and wanted to ride bikes for a bit longer head over to 10 Barrel Brewing Co.

Emily holding a steak sandwich w/ a beer at10 Barrel Brewing which was a restaurant style brewery on our self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon

10 Barrel Brewing Co was about a 5 minute (.8mi) ride from the last section of breweries. It was more of a restaurant-style brewery, so if you are hungry this would be a great spot to grab food. This brewery was right off a semi-busy road, but had a good patio space with some indoor seating that had a nice breeze from the open-air bar area.

For beers, we got Gay Day IPA and Cloud Mentality. The Gay Day is an OJ juicy IPA which was super tasty, almost like a beer-mosa! And Cloud Mentality is a Hazy IPA with strata hops and fruit notes. Both were super delicious.

We were a bit hungry by now, so we decided to get food here. We decided to split the Tri-tip steak sandwich which had big chunks of med-rare steak. It was pretty bomb!

Boss Rambler

Jake Holding a Beer at Boss Rambler Beer Club which was our last stop on our self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon

Last but not least, we visited Boss Rambler which is a short walk or bike ride from 10 Barrel. This location basically has a street-side patio so the road noise was a little annoying. But we still loved being outdoors enjoying the warmth! Plus their design is super bright and fun colors which I am a personal fan of!

At this point in the brewery tour, Jake and I were feeling like we could only handle one more beer to safely make it home on the bike. So we split the Hang Juice Hazy and it was super yummy! They had a huge selection of Hazy IPA’s which are our favorite. But a decent selection of other beers too.

If you feel like you would still like to visit one more brewery, then Sunriver Brewing Co  is literally right next to Boss Rambler.

Optional Add On Breweries:

The other breweries that you could add onto the brewery tour could be Monkless Brewery, Crux Brewery, or Good Life Brewing Company. They would be easy additions to add onto your self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon. Our best suggestion is to look up their beer menus online and see if they serve your favorite style of beer.

Monkless Belgian Ales:

For example, Monkless seemed to have more English style ales, which aren’t necessarily our favorite, so we decided to skip it. But if that style of beer interests you, they have a killer second floor deck that overlooks the river. If you rent bikes from Wheel Fun Rentals then you literally pass Monkless Belgian Ales Brewery on the route up the river, so it would be a good first or last stop.

Crux Fermentation Project:

Emily holding her flight of beer at Crux Fermentation Project which could be added to your self-guided brewery tour in Bend

We did happen to visit Crux Fermentation Project on a different day. They seemed to have a ton of styles of beer we tend to like, but after getting two different flights with 8 different sample beers, we really can’t say we loved any of them. But the atmosphere at Crux was fabulous. It’s dog friendly, with a huge grassy area for them to run around in. They also had a couple food trucks and a tent for shade. Their indoor space was modern, large and had two bars, so I am assuming this place gets pretty busy.

Personally just hoping Crux was having an off day with their tap or something, because peoples reviews of their beers are great. When we ordered, the beers were pouring SUPER SLOW, so maybe something was just wrong with the pressure?! I wouldn’t quite rule this place out if their beers interest you! We are willing to give this place a second try if we come back to visit!

Good Life Brewing Company:

We also visited The Good Life Brewing Company on a different day during our stay. They have a large grassy outdoor area where there was a band getting ready to play live music. You can even bring your own lawn chairs to enjoy the show. They had a food truck outside or a small food list you can order from inside.

Also, take a look at the Bend Ale Trail , there are even more breweries in the area to choose from! So the fun doesn’t have to stop at just these that we mentioned above.

Takeaway | Self-Guided Brewery Tour In Bend, Oregon:

We seriously had so much fun visiting these different breweries in Bend. We highly suggest renting bikes and visit a few different breweries in the area! You can even rent the bike for 24-hours or multi-day from Wheel Fun Rentals, so you can break this self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon into 2-3 days so you don’t have to miss any of them! We hope you have fun on your own self-guided brewery tour in Bend, Oregon.
