Samsung is the most popular Android smartphone maker and has done a good job addressing both consumer and enterprise needs. The new Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus offer a lot for everyone.

Apple iPhones include Safari as the default web browser while most Android phones have Google Chrome as the default. Samsung Galaxy owners have had the Samsung Internet browser available for years. Other mobile browser options include Firefox and Opera.

After using them all on various devices, the best I have found is the Samsung Internet browser.

You might think Google Chrome is the best for Android devices, but it is not well optimized for mobile and only adds in features found in Samsung Internet if you jump into hidden settings and even then the performance is not consistent. Here are several reasons why Samsung Internet is best:

Controls at the bottom : With today's large screen smartphones, it is much easier to use the browser with the main navigation options at the bottom. Back, forward, home, bookmarks, and tabs are found on the bottom of the Samsung Internet browser.
True full screen viewing : Most browsers have a "full screen" mode that then still shows some controls or menu options. As soon as you start scrolling down a page with the Samsung browser, the entire display fills with your internet content and you enjoy the internet as it was designed.
Reader mode : One reason I like Safari on the iPhone is for its integrated reader mode that strips out and reformats content for an optimal reading experience. Chrome hacks can give you a similar, but limited experience, as well, but Samsung's browser supports it by default and it works very well.
High contrast mode : This modes makes browsing the web for those with impaired vision much better and it is easily toggled by tapping the Settings > Accessibility option in the browser settings.
Desktop syncing : Samsung Internet supports tons of extensions, including a desktop Chrome extension , so you can sync your Google Chrome desktop bookmarks with the Samsung Internet browser.
Easy support for content blockers : I understand ad review supports many sites, but sometimes it is overbearing and you want to block ads or content. Samsung Internet supports content blockers with suggested ad blockers provided right within the browser.
Experimental features : Similar to Chrome flags, enter internet://flags in the URL line of Samsung Internet and enable features such as WebVR, Web Bluetooth, WebGL 2, and many more.

If you own a non-Galaxy Android L and above smartphone, then I recommend you visit the Google Play Store for the Samsung Internet browser beta, version 6.2, and give it a try. You might agree with me that it is the best on today's smartphones.

Samsung Follows Apple and Lets Users Move Mobile Browser Address Bar to the Bottom of the Screen

Apple took significant flak from users when it moved Safari's address bar to the bottom of the screen in iOS 15, but Samsung apparently liked it enough that it's now added the same option to its own mobile web browser for Android phones.

That said, Samsung's timing is a bit curious, coming in the wake of Apple's much-publicized and highly divisive Safari interface redesign. Apple made sweeping changes to Safari browser in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, making numerous alterations to the organization and layout of tabs and other tools. Following a user backlash, Apple walked back the most controversial changes in successive betas, and made the position of the address bar optional .

This mobile browser was built specifically for Samsung devices, but people liked it so much that the company made it available for download on all Android phones. It utilizes a built-in ad-tracking blocker, and works with third-party ad-blocking apps. But perhaps the most interesting feature of the Samsung Internet app is its compatibility with Samsung's Gear VR platform. That means if you've got a Gear VR headset, you can select links merely by looking at them. Available on Android .

Many Android phones already get Chrome as the default browser, but iPhone users can get in on the fun too. The mobile browser is especially useful if you already use Chrome on the desktop. You log into the app using your Google ID, and it syncs your personal data to the mobile browser. You get access to all of your saved logins, your bookmarks, and your browsing history, including whatever tabs you have open on your desktop. You also get Chrome's incognito mode for private browsing, and access to Google's excellent cloud translation service that lets you translate a foreign-language web page into English with a tap of a button. This privacy-focused browser gives you unlimited encrypted VPN service for free. Just tap the shield in the top left corner to turn the VPN on and browse privately. The VPN also has a data-saving feature that compresses pages to save you bandwidth and speed things up. Beyond letting you surf in a "private mode" like other browsers, Aloha goes as far as letting you lock down certain tabs; they can then only be accessed with TouchID or a passcode. It comes with an ad-blocker to make pages appear cleaner, and there's a built-in media player that manages your downloaded files and lets you play music and videos right there in the browser. Did Samsung Internet Browser swipe this polarizing feature from Apple?

The Samsung Internet Browser beta now allows you to move the URL bar to the bottom of the screen.
This comes months after Safari on the iOS 15 beta offered the same feature.
Apple wasn’t the first to adopt this option though.

The Samsung Internet Browser has plenty of fans, owing to a variety of neat features and integration with Samsung’s own functionality. Now, a beta version of the app has enabled a handy new feature that was seemingly inspired by rival platforms.

Apple Insider and SamMobile reported that the latest beta version of the Samsung Internet Browser now allows users to move the URL bar to the bottom of the screen. The former outlet notes that this apes a Safari feature in the iOS 15 beta.

However, it’s worth noting that moving a phone browser’s URL bar to the bottom of the screen isn’t anything new. Windows Phone 8 and above had this feature for years before Apple and Samsung adopted it, and Google has experimented with this on the mobile version of Chrome too.

Then again, the timing of Samsung’s decision is interesting, suggesting that it was indeed inspired by Apple rather than previous takes on the feature. In any event, this change makes sense given the fact that phone screens are taller than ever. Some iPhone users hated the change when Apple did it though, as the URL bar was floating over webpage content rather than being docked. So we hope Samsung learned from this path.

The Samsung Internet Browser also gains Chrome and Safari’s tab groups feature, which allows you to organize tabs into groups (obviously) and name them. So either way, fans of Samsung’s browser are getting some welcome additions.

Apple’s mobile internet program expands to other manufacturers

Samsungs new SGH-L870 is a pretty good phone - it has decent top end features in Symbian 9.3 and the latest version of the S60 interface, and has a lovely stainless steel body to boot.

But more interesting (and surprising) is the fact it also boasts Apple ’s Mobile Safari browser, currently only available in the iPhone and iPod touch.

The Samsung L870 is not touch sensitive, so it’s unlikely the “pinch and zoom” function that has helped make Apple’s devices so popular will be ported over.

Mouse or mobile?

But the move does start to raise questions about whether the Safari mobile browser could become the programme considered when designing web pages.

If users are increasingly going to be viewing the internet without a mouse, hovering over stuff will become useless.

So therefore web designers may soon have to find a way to complete a page that serves both the PC and mobile user.

The pre-installed browser is the only one that's available. However, there are ways to connect a different browser.
Use a media streaming device like Fire TV (Silk or Firefox) or Chromecast (Chrome).
For a lot more web browser options, plug a laptop into the TV using an HDMI cable.

This article explains how to use an alternative to Samsung's Smart TV web browser , which is preinstalled on your TV. While you can't install a new browser on the TV, you do have other options.

Option One: Connect a Streaming Stick That Offers Another Browser

Media streaming devices that have their own web browser is one workaround. Just plug the streaming stick into the TV and use its built-in browser, or download a different browser through its app store.

Amazon Fire TV

Amazon Fire TV offers both the Firefox and Silk web browsers, which provide more flexibility than the Samsung Smart TV browser. Silk (called Internet ) is built-in; select Apps from the home screen to find it. You'll need to download Firefox through the search icon in the upper left corner.

One handy feature included in these browsers, in addition to using the navigation controls on the Fire TV remote, is that you can also use Alexa commands to search the web. However, typical browser options, like saving passwords and downloading images, isn't available on the Fire TV version of Firefox. Also, Mozilla has stopped supporting Firefox on Fire TV, although it's still available for download.

Google Chromecast

If you're using Chrome on your computer, select Cast from the upper-right menu button to send anything visible on your screen to your Samsung TV. The Chromecast must be connected via HDMI to the back of the TV.

If you open a new tab, or close the existing one, you'll need to cast the new tab in order to see it on the big screen.

Apple TV doesn't offer a web browser that can be installed directly to the device, but you can get AirWeb on your iPhone or iPad. Using AirPlay , you can mirror the AirWeb browser through the Apple TV connected to your Samsung TV. You can also AirPlay your Mac's screen to a connected Apple TV device.

Why a Plug-in Media Streamer May Not Be the Best Option

Unless you already have an external media streamer, it may not be the best option for getting a web browser on your Samsung TV. This is because you're paying for a device that provides duplicate access to a lot of the same streaming apps that your Samsung TV may already offer.

If you're satisfied with the app selection on your Samsung TV, using another method to get an alternative web browser to work with your TV might be more efficient. One such option is to plug a computer directly into your TV.

Option Two: Plug a PC Into Your TV

The next best option is to plug your computer into your TV. This will put whatever is on your computer directly onto your TV. This includes any web browser that can run on your PC, plus software programs and even the entire desktop. You'll be able to use your keyboard and mouse and transmit audio over the cable.

Option Three: Use Screen Mirroring

Wireless screen mirroring is available on most Wi-Fi-enabled PCs, laptops, and smartphones. Screen mirroring allows you to transmit any browsers, as well as everything else displayed or stored on your PC or smartphone, to your Samsung TV screen. See How to Mirror a Laptop to a TV for help.

To mirror your Samsung phone's screen to your TV, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Smart View , Quick Connect , or Screen Mirroring . The phone will look for the TV, usually identifying it by the model number. When the model appears, select it. You may be asked to enter a PIN provided by the TV.

Other devices might call this Screen Share , Wi-Fi Direct , or Miracast . Search the Settings app for these options.

Screen mirroring is supported on almost all Samsung Smart TVs. If you don't see your TV in the list, you might need to turn on mirroring manually. Setup varies, so consult your TV's user guide or online manual for the exact steps for your model. Here are some things you can try:

Press the Source button on your remote, then select the Screen Mirroring option on the TV menu.
Select Menu on your remote, then go to Network > Screen Mirroring .
Navigate to Menu > Network > Expert Settings > Wi-Fi Direct .

To reset and clear your Smart TV browser's cache, go to Settings > Apps > System , then locate and select the browser. Next, select the option to clear the cache.

First, check to make sure your browser is up to date, then download any updates you might be missing. If that doesn't work, try closing and reopening the browser. If you're still not seeing any improvement, try restarting your Smart TV, or unplugging the set for a few minutes and then plugging it back in.

From the Home screen, open Applications > select Browser > Menu > Settings . Next, go to Privacy and check your cookie options.

You can block the web browser and other apps on your Smart TV by using Parental Controls. Under Apps , select Settings , choose the web browser (or other app) to lock, and select Lock or Unlock .

There's a super quick way of switching between tabs in Safari on iPhone, and see all open tabs. Here is how.

There are so many tips and tricks built into iPhone's software , some of which are nice and obvious, while others are a little more hidden.

Did you know, for example, there is a quicker way to switch between tabs in Safari than having to tap on the squares in the bottom right corner and then choosing a different tab?

Well there is and we're about to tell you how. You can thank us later.

How to switch Safari tabs quickly

There are a couple of ways to switch between tabs when using Safari on your iPhone. You can use the standard way, which sees you tap on the two squares in the bottom right corner and select a different tab, or you can follow the steps below.

Open Safari
Swipe right or left on the address bar
That's it! Each swipe will take you to a tab you've already opened.

How to see open tabs on Safari quickly

Like with switching between tabs on Safari, you can tap the two squares in the bottom right corner to see all your open tabs. There's a quicker way though.

Samsung's mobile web browser now has its address bar at the bottom of the screen after a new change.
Apple was the first to make the switch last month and people still aren't sure about it.

When Apple decided to move Safari's address bar to the bottom of the screen with the iOS 15 release, people weren't convinced it was the best move. Weeks later, they still aren't — except someone at Samsung. They're very sure, because they decided to make the company's own web browser do the same thing.

Following a new update, Samsung's own web browser now puts the address bar at the very bottom of the screen, just like Safari. Coincidence?

Just like Safari, Samsung's browser has an option to move the address bar back to the top of the screen — where some might argue it should always be.

While Safari isn't the first web browser to try this switch, the timing of Samsung's move is obviously going to be called into question given the proximity to Apple's Safari changes. None of this will really matter to iPhone users of course, they don't have access to the Samsung browser anyway. Even if they did, Safari would likely still be the best iPhone browser available. It's just interesting to see Samsung borrow so heavily from Apple. Again.

Safari on iPhone wasn't the only version of the popular web browser to go through controversial changes this year. The macOS Monterey Safari refresh saw tabs move all over the place throughout the beta program, with Apple essentially undoing all of its changes by the time the update was ready to be installed on machines around the world.

Safari is fast and optimized for mobile devices. That's usually a good thing. But there are still a few websites that refuse to adapt to mobile Safari or provide an inferior experience on their mobile site. In times like these, you can switch to the desktop version of the website.

Like many iOS features, especially ones for Safari, the Request Desktop Site feature is hidden. With iOS 13, Apple has changed the placement of this option, which makes it a bit easier to find. As iPadOS 13 automatically loads desktop websites, iPad users won't need to look for this feature after updating.

Here's how this feature works on devices running iOS 12 and iOS 13.

iOS 12 and Below

Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad and load a website. Now, tap and hold on the "Refresh" button next to the URL bar.

You'll see a popup at the bottom of the screen. From here, select "Request Desktop Site."

The website will reload, and you'll now see the desktop version of the site . To go back to the mobile version, tap and hold on the "Refresh" button again and select "Request Mobile Site."

iOS 13 and Above

With the iOS 13 update, Apple has improved the Safari browser in a couple of important ways. While most improvements are seen on the iPad version, iPhone users get access to the new Safari Download Manager as well as a new customization menu for websites.

Tap on the "Aa" icon to see a couple of new menu options. From here, select the "Request Desktop Website" button to open the desktop version of the website.

Come back to the same menu to switch back to the mobile version.

And that's it. You now know how to access desktop websites on your iPhone and iPad using mobile Safari.

With Try Galaxy, a downloadable web app from Samsung, you can run an emulated version of the Galaxy operating system on your iPhone, to see whether you like using it!

You may have heard that Samsung's run Android — and are some of the best Android phones at that. However, while Samsung Galaxy phones do indeed run on Android, they run a version that's a little different to other Android devices, like the Google Pixel 7 . Samsung Galaxy devices use their own Android overlay called One UI .

So, even if you're an iPhone user who has used other varieties of Android, you might not have tried One UI, making the Try Galaxy web app very useful even for people with experience of other Android flavors.

Better yet, using Try Galaxy on iPhone is super easy, and this guide will show you how.

How to use Samsung's Try Galaxy on iPhone

On your iPhone's browser, go to trygalaxy.com

2. Tap the Share icon

Tap the Share icon at the bottom of the screen.

3. Tap Add to Home Screen

Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen . On the next screen, tap Add .

4. Open Try Galaxy

Go to your Home Screen and tap the Try Galaxy tile to open the app.

5. Tap Next through the setup steps

Read though the messages on the two information screens that pop up and tap Next if you're happy.

6. Play around with Galaxy's One UI

At the bottom of the screen you'll see the buttons you'd find on a Samsung device. Tap Navigate to open the app tray (this doesn't actually work as it would on a Samsung phone — you simply get a message telling you what the Nav button does). Tap Go home to return to your Samsung Home Screen or tap Go back to go back a step .

Now you can simply have a play with One UI and see whether it's for you. Have a nose about and check out the style, basic controls and some of the features.

There you have it. You now know how to use Samsung's Try Galaxy on iPhone. It obviously won't give you the full functionality of a Galaxy smartphone — many features just have explainer pop ups when you tap them, telling you what they do. 5 AI Settings You Need to Enable Right Now on Your Galaxy S24 and S23

Samsung's latest phones have cool AI features, but they're not all enabled by default.

Unlock the full potential of your Galaxy S24 by enabling these features.

The Galaxy S24 series, Samsung's latest flagship devices, comes equipped with exclusive AI features for photo editing, real-time translations, automatically generated summaries for webpages and more.

And thanks to the One UI 6.1 update in March , the Galaxy S23 series now has these same Galaxy AI features and settings.

However, not all of these features are on by default. If you own the Galaxy S24 or the Galaxy S23, and you're still unsure about everything your phone can do, here are five AI settings that you need to enable right now.

Get real-time translations during phone calls

The first setting you'll definitely want to enable is Live Translate, which features near-real-time voice translations between you and whoever you're speaking with on the phone. Before we get into how the translation tool works, let's turn it on first.

In Settings , go to Advanced features > Advanced intelligence > Phone and toggle on Live translate . Before you start using Live Translate, choose your language, the language of the person you're speaking with and the translation voices. (There are 13 languages, including simplified Chinese and Mexico, Spain and US Spanish, with more on the way, the company said.) You also have the option to mute your voice and the other person's voice so that you hear only the translation voice.

You can choose language and voice presets for individual contacts.

To use Live Translate, make your phone call, hit the Call assist button and then choose Live translate to start real-time translation. A screen showing your conversation, with both original and translated text, will appear in real time as you speak. After you speak, the translation tool will translate what you say into the other participant's language. If you have your voices muted, participants will only hear the translation voices speak.

The translated conversation is available to browse as text on your screen in real time.

Use generative AI to edit your photos

One of the biggest AI tools on the Galaxy S24 is Generative Edit, which allows you to erase, recompose and remaster the photos you take on your phone, using generative AI. For example, if you want to resize an object or remove a person in a photo, Generative Edit can generate a new background to fill in any missing pieces.

Like the rest of the features and settings in this guide, Generative Edit is not on by default, so you'll need to turn it on in your settings. Go to Settings > Advanced features > Advanced intelligence > Photo Editor and toggle on Generative edit .

Move, remove and resize people and objects in your photos and use generative AI to fill the background in.

In the Gallery app, hit Edit and then tap the AI button , with three stars, to use generative AI. You can then straighten the photo out, and generative AI will help generate more background, or you can draw on the image to move, remove or resize any object in the photo, with generative AI once again creating a background to fill the image in.

Automatically create a summary of your voice recording

The Voice Recorder on your Galaxy S24 doesn't just record audio. It's also capable of transcribing the audio into text and then using AI to summarize the text, which is useful if you're recording a lecture at school or a presentation at work. However, before you can summarize your transcriptions, you have to enable the feature in your settings.

Go to Settings > Advanced features > Advanced intelligence > Voice Recorder > Summaries and toggle it on. Turning Summaries on will automatically create a summary of your audio recordings using artificial intelligence.

You can choose various languages besides English for your transcripts and summaries.

If you want to check out the transcription tool at work, tap on an audio recording in the Voice Recorder application, create a transcript and then go into the Summary tab. At the top of the summary you'll see keywords you can tap to check out specific sections in the summary, and underneath that is where the summary lives, full of AI-generated headers and bullet points.

There are timestamps so that you can follow along with the audio as you check out your transcript summary.

Get summaries of any site you visit in your web browser

Another AI tool that you need to enable before you can use it allows you to summarize pretty much any webpage you visit in your browser. For this to work, however, you'll need to be in Samsung's default web browser, which is simply called Internet. The AI summary tool doesn't work in Chrome or any other third-party web browser.

In Settings > Advanced features > Advanced intelligence > Samsung Internet > Summarize , toggle the tool on. Now you can get summaries for webpages.

As mentioned in the settings, these summaries are not stored by Samsung.

Go to the Samsung web browser, visit a site you want to summarize and press the AI icon (three stars) that appears in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. Hit Summarize and you'll get an AI-generated summary of the webpage. Below you can see a summary of David Lumb's CNET story on the Samsung Galaxy Ring .

You can copy the summary to your clipboard, translate it to another language or hit the edit icon on the top right of the summary panel to get a more detailed summary.

Process data only on your device when using AI

The final AI setting you should consider enabling is for your own privacy. In Settings > Advanced features > Advanced intelligence , you can toggle on Process data only on device so that any data processed via artificial intelligence is done only on your device, instead of online.

Usually, your data is sent to a third party only to generate a response for whatever feature you're using. It's not used for machine learning or advertisements, and your data is immediately deleted from third-party servers as soon as your generation is complete. But if you feel safer with your data staying on your device, you should enable this setting.

Samsung does warn that toggling this feature on will provide worse results and certain AI features may not work.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya. This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station, and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya. Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar. One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
