It’s the birthplace of democracy, classical architecture, philosophy, and the Olympic Games.More through good luck than planning, many stunning structures survive from Greece’s Golden Age, so visiting Athens becomes a journey to the very roots of Western Civilization.

There’s much more to see and do in Athens than I can squeeze into this brief travel guide, but I hope it will provide a good starting point as you plan your visit.

Airports & Entry

Athens International Airport is the busiest airport in Greece and the 27 th busiest in Europe. It handles around 24 million passengers a year. Since the airport was only opened in 2001 and expanded in 2018, you’ll find the 2 terminals and all the facilities modern. An underground moving sidewalk connects the original main terminal to the new satellite terminal.

What’s unusual about Athens Airport is the presence of an art gallery and 3 museums. If you get bored waiting for your flight, they provide lots for you to see. The Art & Culture Exhibition Area is found on the Arrivals level. They host regular photography and painting exhibitions, book signings, and cultural events.

In the main terminal, the Acropolis Museum features classical Greek exhibits from the Acropolis. On the Departures level, the Eleftherios Venizelos Exhibition displays relics from Greek aviation history in the. In the same area, you’ll find the Exhibition of Archaeological Findings.

Getting back to the modern world, you’ll find mobile charging points around the airport, and free Wi-Fi on the “ATH Free Wi-Fi” network. The free Wi-Fi only lasts 45 minutes, but you can log-in again as often as you like.

If you’re traveling with kids aged 18 months to 7-years-old, you’ll find a children’s play area in the main terminal landside on the 2 nd floor. It’s open from 9 am to 9 pm. There are baby rooms and diaper changing facilities throughout the airport on both landside and airside.

With 20 food outlets, you won’t have any problem finding something to eat. Many are open 24 hours. The airport also has a mini market on the Arrivals level, landside and duty-free shopping on the Departures level. Many of the stores in the airport operate 24 hours.

ATMs are located all around the airport on both Arrivals and Departures levels. There are also multiple currency exchange kiosks operated by ONExchange. You’ll find full banking services at the Alpha Bank on the Arrivals level landside, open from 8 am to 6 pm weekdays and 9 am to 4 pm on weekends and bank holidays.

If you have a medical problem, there’s a pharmacy on the Arrivals level, landside, open from 6 am to midnight. Urgent emergency care is available at the airport first aid station provided by qualified members of the National Center for Emergency Care.

The easiest way to get into Athens from the airport is on the Metro . The airport train station is connected to the city via Metro Line 3. The journey takes 40 minutes and there’s a service every ½ hour. There are also services to other cities and archaeological sites provided by the Athens Suburban Railway .

The city bus company, Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA ), provides even more frequent services into the city. 4 bus services (X93, X95, X96, and X97) operate from the Arrivals level between Exits 4 and 5. The buses run 24/7 and the X95 to Syntagma (Athens City Center) takes around 40 minutes and departs every 15 to 20 minutes.

Alternatively, the major vehicle rental companies (Hertz, National, Europcar, Budget, Avis, Sixt, and Alamo) have desks on the Arrivals level.

And there’s always the taxi stand, found on the Arrivals level, Exit 3. During the day, the fare into the city center is around €48 but increases to €54 after midnight until 5 am.

Athens is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay. Just to ensure you do, here are 5 tips to help you plan your visit.

Tip #1: Watch your purse and your pockets

Pickpockets and purse-snatchers love Athens. The crowds of oblivious tourists admiring stunning architecture provide great prospects for any unscrupulous thief to get rich quick. Watch out for thieves everywhere, especially in the Metro system, around all the tourist attractions, and Omonia Square.

Tip #2: Book tickets in advance, especially during summer

Athens is a popular destination, so tours frequently sell out. Consider booking in advance so that you are assured of the excursions you want to take. Most reputable tour operators offer full refunds for trips canceled with reasonable notice. Just check the refund policy when you book any tours.

Tip #3: Go during spring or fall

Many of the most important attractions in Athens are outdoor, so you’re exposed to the sun. Because Athens is the second hottest capital city in Europe, the summer heat can become unbearable. If you’re traveling with young kids or elderly relatives, you certainly shouldn’t take them during summer.

Personally, I would prefer not to visit Athens in the summer. Not only is it too hot to appreciate the beauty of the city in the middle of the day, but it’s also when the city and its many attractions are most crowded. If you want warm rather than hot weather, go in spring or fall.

Tip #4: Buy unique souvenirs

Pop over to the Plaka neighborhood for some unique souvenirs. Spoons and ladles carved from olivewood, unique Greek products, as well as the usual range of T-shirts and less cultural souvenirs are found in the many gift shops in its labyrinth of old-world alleyways.

There are also many specialist jewelry shops in the Plaka neighborhood, where you can purchase custom-designed and unique items. Many of these stores are owned by artists, like the popular jewelers, Byzantino .

Tip #5: Cash is king

Greece is not a cashless society. You may be used to sticking all your restaurant and transport bills on a credit card, but this probably won’t work so well in Athens. A surprising number of busy restaurants and large stores don’t accept electronic payment methods, so you must be prepared to carry cash.

Because of the pickpockets mentioned above, consider methods to protect your cash. A fanny pack may look unattractive, but it beats getting your restaurant bill and discovering your wallet isn’t where it should be.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Because Athens is a Mediterranean port city, the local food is typically Mediterranean, with frequent use of fish and olives. In fact, a founding myth about the city claims that when competing to become the patron god of the city, the god Poseidon gave them a saltwater spring and the goddess Athena gave them their first olive tree.

Breakfasts typically consist of pastries from one of the many bakeries and a cup of coffee. Common breakfast pastries include the savory feta or spinach pastry, a flaky phyllo pastry, or the sweet Bougatsa custard pastry. Although it is not a traditional Athenian breakfast food, some cafés also sell Greek yoghurt due to tourist demand.

Athens’ streets are riddled with tavernas and cafés. Lunches are long and leisurely. Like in Spain, dinner is typically eaten late. Restaurants usually get busy at around 10 pm. Food is ordered for the table (the group of people sitting together) rather than the individual. This means that portions are often large because they are designed to be shared rather than eaten by one.

The tavernas offer a variety of hors d’oeuvre called a mezedes, which is a small dish of hot or cold food with dips. Mezedes are often eaten while drinking ouzo, a strong anise liquor. My favorite mezedes is saganaki, which is great for any cheese lover. It’s a hard cheese fried to create a crunchy crust and sprinkled with lemon juice. Tomatokeftedes (tomato balls) are another popular appetizer, sweet, soft, and full of herbs and tomato. Mezedes are typically served with a yoghurt dip.

Alongside mezedes, Athenians eat salad. Horiatiki salata (Greek salad) is tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, spicy shallots, and olives, all splashed with virgin olive oil and topped with feta cheese. Because the salad portion is designed to be shared, one person can make a filling meal out of a single serving of salad and some crusty bread.

Perhaps the most famous main dish in Athens is moussaka. This is an oven-baked dish consisting of mincemeat layered with either potatoes or eggplant and topped with bechamel. It’s not an exclusively Greek dish, but the currently popular version originated in Greece. Moussaka tastes best when seasoned with nutmeg and cinnamon.

A common variant of moussaka is pastitsio. This is another oven-baked dish with mincemeat and topped with bechamel, but this time layered with pasta and tomato sauce.

Being next to the sea, fish soup is popular in Athens. Different kinds of fish appear in the soup depending upon the season. It’s usually a rich broth with lots of fish, vegetables, and flavored with lemon.

But my favorite main dish is pastitsiopanakopita. This spinach and cheese pie is baked in a filo pastry and heavily seasoned. Unfortunately for me, it’s a messy dish. The filo pastry is crumbly and goes everywhere!

When it comes to desserts, Athenians get messy. Their sweet dessert pastries are drenched in honey or syrup. But these sticky treats are delicious when freshly baked. The most popular variety is baklava, which is layers of filo dough stuffed with chopped nuts, usually almonds or pistachios. Another common variety is kataifi, which looks like Shredded Wheat but is fine strands of pastry wrapped around a chopped nut center, usually almonds or walnuts.

Nightlife & Entertainment

While Athens may not have the reputation for wild nightlife found in other parts of the Mediterranean, like the Balearic Islands, you can still find vibrant nightclubs and lively bars. The different areas of the city tend to attract different crowds, so let’s run through them.

If you’re into clubbing, Kerranmeikos is the place to go. This is where you’ll find the new super-club opened by Lindsay Lohan, simply called LOHAN . With Hollywood financing and Greek knowhow, this club features internationally renowned DJs using the highest quality sound and light equipment. It’s a club dedicated to dance parties. In the same area, you’ll find a selection of popular bars, such as The Blue Parrot and Bios .

The neighboring Gazi area is the place to go for live Rebetiko venues, which is a kind of Greek urban blues music. So, if you want to try something uniquely Greek, then you could skip the super-club and head straight for a Rebetiko bar and spend the night listening to Greek blues and drinking ouzo.

If you’re looking for lively bars, Exarchia is the area favored by young Athenians. There are many popular bars along Emmanouil Benaki Street. But Exarchia is also an area known for graffiti and anarchy. In 2008/9, riots brought conflict between youths and police on these narrow streets.

However, that’s only a footnote in modern history. Sandwiched between the University of Athens and the polytechnic, the area is filled with trendy cafés and bars aimed at Bohemian youths.

But if you prefer more sophisticated cocktail bars and hipster hangouts, the two areas to go are Psyrri and Koukaki. Psyrri is a high-class area with lots of bars and a small but lively nightclub called Cantina Social. The most interesting bar to check out is Six d.o.g.s, which is a unique bar with DJs, live music, club nights, and art exhibitions! And if you’re into wine, Materia Prima Wine Bar in Psyrri has a fantastic reputation.

Getting Around

In central Athens, many of the attractions are close together, so walking is a viable option. However, to really see the city, public transport is the best option. You can use the Metro, buses, or trams. To use public transport , you’ll need an ATH.ENA Card .

The Metro is the easiest and quickest way to travel around Athens. The signs and maps can be confusing since some are only in Greek, but the network is simple. There are only 3 lines, and once you get a feel for the system, it becomes easy.

The main Metro station in the center of Athens is Syntagma. This is in the same area as the Greek parliament building and the main city square. Much like the airport, this station also holds a museum. In this case, the museum displays the archaeological treasures unearthed when the station was built.

The buses in Athens are not as comfortable or as quick as the Metro. Also, the bus times tend to be unpredictable and the routes confusing. Bus stops are often difficult to find, and you might need to ask a local for directions. Some of the buses are “trolleys”, which are the same as regular buses except that they run on electricity.

The trams are modern and environmentally friendly. There are only 3 tram services, and they all connect Syntagma Station with coastal resorts and beaches.

Taxis are always an option, but you’ll find them expensive compared to public transport and not as quick as the Metro.

The Plaka area is arguably the most desirable location because it’s nestled between the Acropolis and Syntagma Square (main square and central Metro station). Plaka is the quietest and most peaceful area of Athens.

Because of the problem of pick-pockets in Athens, you’ll want to make sure your hotel room has a safe. Whenever you go out, leave anything you won’t need in your safe. Any important documents, credit cards you won’t need that day, and spare cash should be left safely behind.

There are a few very seedy hotels in Athens that you’ll want to avoid. My advice is to check reviews on more than one hotel-reviewing site before booking. You’ll find some cheap hostels and basic hotels around Omonia Square, but the area is renowned for purse snatchers and seediness, as well as legal brothels.

A friend booked a night at the Athens House Hotel on booking.com because the reviews there looked positive, and she wanted to stay somewhere cheap and basic. When she arrived, the hotel’s hygiene standards were abysmal. When she later looked on TripAdvisor, she found the same hotel had a rating of 2 out of 5 stars and featured some extremely alarming reviews!

But, to be fair, the Athens House Hotel is great for economy backpackers. With last minute rooms at $10 or $20 a night, you can put up with bad service and a bit of grime!

If you’re made of money and want to sample the high life, check out the Hotel Grande Bretagne (GB) . A basic suite in the GB will cost around $300 a night, but you get what you pay for. This luxury hotel overlooks Syntagma Square, and you can even watch the changing of the guards in front of the Greek parliament building from your balcony.

The GB has one pool in the basement and another on the roof. There’s also a fully-equipped spa in the basement. The exclusive Alexander’s Bar inside the GB was voted Best Hotel Bar in the World by Forbes magazine, and the GB Roof Garden Restaurant & Bar provides the best views of the Acropolis you’ll find in the city.

If you’re traveling on a tighter budget, check out the Hotel Attalos . It’s not quite so central as the GB, but it also has a roof garden café with fantastic views of the Acropolis for around $125 a night.

The Hotel Attalos is a 15-minute walk to the Acropolis and the same to central Syntagma Square. It’s only a short walk to the Monastiraki Metro Station, so it’s convenient for rapid public transport to all the main attractions. It gets fantastic reviews and ratings on both TripAdvisor and Booking.com.

But when I take my family to Athens, I avoid the crowds and pollution in the city center altogether. Not far from the city, there are dozens of clean and modern hotels along the coastline of the Athenian Riviera. With the great tram connections to Syntagma Square Station, they’re only a short ride away from all the main attractions.

Most coastal hotels are walking distance to the beach, and sometimes their buildings even segue into the sand. They typically offer more spacious and better-equipped rooms for a fraction of the price of city center hotels.

For example, consider Maison 66 in Alimos. This modern hotel is 6 miles from Syntagma Square, which means 25 minutes in a car or 45 minutes on a tram. That might sound like a lot of traveling, but Maison 66 offers a beautifully decorated room with a sea view, furnished balcony, air-conditioning, flat-screen TV, en-suite bathrooms with shower cabins, and free Wi-FI for only $80 per night.

Maison 66 is rated 9.1/10 on Booking.com and 5/5 on TripAdvisor! If your family wants to split their time between the beach and the cultural attractions, this hotel or others like it in coastal beach resorts offer you spacious, clean and modern accommodation for a fraction of equivalent hotels in the center of Athens.

Athens is the second hottest capital city in Europe. It experiences mild winters and long, dry, and hot summers. July and August are extremely dry, and most rainfall occurs between October and April.

Because the weather is relatively fine all year long, you can visit Athens at any time. However, I’d recommend you visit Athens in spring (late March through early June) or fall (late September through early November) if possible.

Spring and fall are when the weather isn’t too hot but still warm enough to enjoy the sun. Winter can be chilly and wet, and summer is just too hot for me. Most tourists visit during summer, which means the streets, attractions, and public transport are all crowded.

In summer, it grows too hot in the middle of the day for comfortable sightseeing. If you plan to visit the Acropolis, the best time of day is the early morning before the midday heat bakes the ground. Alternatively, visit in the last two hours of the site’s opening times. In August, average temperatures range from 73 0 F to 89 0 F.

It’s still pleasant and sunny in the fall, so this is a great time to wander around the Panathenaic Stadium. However, there’s more rain than during summer, especially in November. In November, average temperatures range from 54 0 F to 66 0 F.

Athenian winters are mild, but December sees the most rain. Despite warm average temperatures, snow isn’t uncommon, and it can get chilly on occasions. January’s average temperatures range from 45 0 F to 57 0 F.

Rainfall rapidly decreases between April and June, and the days become warmer. The average temperatures in April range from 53 0 F to 67 0 F.

Attractions

99.9% of visitors to Athens have the Acropolis at the top of their “must-see” list, but there’s more to Athens than its citadel. It’s the capital of a modern nation and the center of Greek culture. But, I’m not going to swim against the crowd right now. The Acropolis is top of my list, too!

The Acropolis looms over Athens and is the most famous attraction in Greece. Archaeological evidence shows the hill has been settled since as early as 4,000 BCE, and the Acropolis as we know it began to take shape in the 13 th -century BCE when it was fortified with a wall that still forms part of today’s complex monument.

Most of the structures we see on the old citadel date from the 5 th -century BCE. That’s because a helpful group of Persian invaders leveled many of the pre-existing buildings in 480 BCE during the Greco-Persian Wars.

There are many ancient temples atop the hill, including the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, and the Brauronion. But none is more famous or iconic than the Parthenon . Built in 438 BCE and dedicated to Athena Parthenos, this is the most awesome example of Ancient Greek architecture in existence.

Also inside the Acropolis is the Acropolis Museum . This incongruous, modern structure stands 3-stores-high, right beside the Parthenon. However, it does effectively display the artifacts recovered by archaeologists from excavations atop the hill. The highlight is the Parthenon Marbles exhibition on the top floor.

Don’t miss the Theatre of Dionysus. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis and carved into the southern cliff, this is believed to be the oldest surviving theater in the world. The site has been a theater since the 6 th -century BCE, but the present structure is 4 th- century BCE. If you ever had to read Greek tragedies in school written by Euripides or Sophocles, this is where those famous plays premiered!

The last ancient monument in the city I’ll specifically recommend is the Panathenaic Stadium . Not only is this the only athletic stadium in the world constructed in marble, but it’s also the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games .

The stadium began life in antiquity as a racecourse and was transformed into a stadium in 330 BCE. The current marble structure dates to 144 CE and was designed to seat 50,000 spectators. The first modern Olympic Games were held here in 1896.

But Athens isn’t all about ancient antiquity. The heart of the modern city isn’t atop the Acropolis. It’s Syntagma Square. Not only is this where you’ll find the main Metro station, but it’s the central square and location of the Greek Parliament building.

The Parliament building is guarded by Evzones, who are parliamentary guards. Evzones wear special handmade shoes and uniforms and perform an hourly changing of the guards. There is an especially elaborate changing ceremony at 11 am every Sunday.

Pop over to the Plaka neighborhood to see charming houses decked with flower baskets and colorful cafés with outdoor seating. You’ll definitely need your camera as you explore this picturesque area.

The Plaka neighborhood is a great place to sample traditional Greek food and buy unique souvenirs. And if you’ve always wanted to try a traditional Turkish Bath, you can enjoy a steam bath and a relaxing massage at Al Hammam .

And if you want to see where the Athenians shop, check out the Varvakeios Central Food Market . This is where you can get a feeling for the heartbeat of Athens. This market is a great place to sample authentic Greek fresh foods and drinks. Why not try some strong Greek coffee made just how Athenians like it? But note that this market, like many grocery businesses in Greece, is closed on Sundays.

Getting out of the center, consider ascending Lycabettus Hill . This is the highest point in Athens. Sunset is a great time to visit for spectacular views across the city lit by the dying sun. At the top, you’ll find St. George’s Church and Orizontes Restaurant . The restaurant’s rooftop terrace provides stunning views.

You can spend a month in Athens and not see everything, but some people like to explore the wider context and travel to other parts of Greece. Also, in summer, getting out of the capital city helps you escape the relentless heat.

If you want to visit more of Greece, Athens makes a great base. Various Mediterranean islands, such as Aegina, Moni, Agistri, and Santorini, are popular destinations for longer day trips. Or you can enjoy a simple cruise along the Athenian Riviera and enjoy fantastic views of the Greek coast.

The Acropolis

High above the modern city, the iconic Acropolis offers the best views of Athens, the sea, and mountains surrounding the city. Nota is an archeologist who grew up in Athens and is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history and culture. She was considerate of of needs and we really enjoyed our 6 hours with her. We learned so much more than we ever would have in days on our own. She met us at our hotel and finished in the Plaka with an easy stroll home. You should have sturdy walking shoes for all tours in Athens. Marble is very slippery! And take a snack with you as we didn't have lunch to 2:30 after a 9:00 am start.

Forget the impersonal long bus tours and sign up for this personalized unique view of Athens!! Anthia, who knows EVERYTHING about the history of Athens, also has a personal knowledge of the culture, people and back streets of Athens. Recommend doing the evening tour (6-10pm) due to the heat. We saw all the historic sights, Anthia took us to a local coffee shop and bargaining with merchants. Beautiful person inside and out, we developed a friendship in just 4 short hours! Definitely wear your walking shoes...ask for modified tour if you can't walk 3-4 miles in one night...would highly recommend!!!

Great tour with the kids

We had a wonderful tour with Marialena this morning, a half-day tour of the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum. First of all, when we arrived in our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised to find a little welcome bag demo Athens Insiders! Such a nice touch. This morning, Marialena picked us up at our hotel and spent a great half-day with us. She told great stories, really engaged the kids (ages 9 and 5), and made it an unforgettable experience. We also added on the iPad virtual reality experience at the Acropolis, which the kids loved. Great tour - highly recommend!

Excellent tour of Acropolis

Our family of five met Vivian who toured us through the Acropolis and the museum. She was very knowledgeable in the archeology, art and history of Greece. The kids really connected with provided access to iPads that imaged the buildings, inside and out, as they looked when used (picture). Her enthusiasm was contagious. She adeptly avoided crowds and found us shade when presenting information. We walked 4+ miles in total. Juice break included and appreciated. Highly recommended.

Great way to experience The Acropolis and surrounding area

This was an excellent tour of The Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and the surrounding area. It is a lot of walking, but the pace was manageable. Angela was our guide and was extremely knowledgable and kind. We highly recommend this tour as a great way to experience some amazing history in Athens.

A lot of crowds! This ancient citadel, perched above the city on a limestone plateau, is a beacon of history, art, and civilization. For those drawn to the echoes of the past, a visit to the Acropolis promises a deep dive into the heart of Greek heritage, with the majestic Parthenon standing as its crown jewel. We have been lucky enough to visit this amazing site three times and want to pass on our tips to help you have the best experience. So get ready to explore the ins and outs of making your Acropolis visit as epic and enlightening as possible, from dodging the crowds to uncovering the best views.

The Acropolis of Athens is a UNESCO World Heritage that stands as a beacon of the grandeur of ancient Greek civilization. Perched atop a 172 meter high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, the Acropolis dates back to the 5th century BC, serving not only as a symbol of the power and culture of Athens but also as a pivotal monument in the development of Western civilization.

Best Time to Visit Acropolis

To avoid the throngs of tourists and the scorching sun, aim for an early morning or late afternoon visit. The Acropolis opens its gates at 8:00 AM, so getting there right at opening time can give you a cooler and somewhat more private experience. We walked from our hotel at sunrise to make it for the first slot at opening, as soon as the guards came down, we rushed ahead to the entrance to be first up without any crowds.

If you can’t make it for the first time slot, we suggest visiting an hour or two before closing allows you to enjoy the golden hues of sunset casting a magical glow over the ancient stones. Plus, all of the organized tours and tour buses will be gone by then.

Tickets and Timed Entry to the Acropolis

Since our last visit to the Acropolis, the city of Athens has made visitors slecect a mandatory timed entry. When booking tickets you can choose the time and date that you want to enter. And lucky you, you can enter the Acropolis 15 minutes before (or after) the time of your choice. We suggest booking as early as possible because, naturally, the crowds will be larger as the day goes on with people lingering on the Acropolis grounds long after their timed entrance.

You can book tickets in advance with Get Your Guide. We highly recommend booking 8 am to see the military march down after raising the flag and to be the first on the Acropolis grounds. We were first up the stairs and had the Acropolis all to ourselves!

Winter hours shorten a bit, so plan accordingly. Remember, the last entry is usually an hour before closing, so give yourself plenty of time to wander and wonder.

We entered the Acropolis at the The Propylaea which is the most popular Acropolis entrance. If your timed entrance is first thing in the morning, we highly recommend this entrance as you will be first to see the Parthenon free from crowds.

If your entrance is later, start your visit at the Theatre of Dionysus, then move up to the Asclepieion and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Continue to the Propylaea, the monumental gateway that leads to the top of the Acropolis, where you can explore the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. This route offers a logical progression through the site and ensures you don’t miss the highlights.

You cannot come to Greece without visiting the Acropolis. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, and the Acropolis has stood high above the city for more than 2,500 years. Many people think that the Parthenon is the Acropolis, but the Acropolis is actually an entire complex at the center of the citadel.

The Acropolis is considered one of the greatest architectural wonders in the world . There are many things to keep an eye out for during your visit, so let’s take a look at some highlights.

The Parthenon

A “visit to the Parthenon” is non-negotiable. This temple, dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, is the epitome of Doric architecture and a symbol of the glory of ancient Athens. Its size, harmony, and the precision of its construction are a testament to the ingenuity of its creators.

The Parthenon is the most famous of the ancient ruins of Acropolis. It is the symbol of democracy dominating the hill of the Acropolis and dates back to the 5th century BC. But the Acropolis is filled with archeological wonders besides the Parthenon. On the grounds, you will also see The Temple of Athena Nike, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus theatre.

Other temples to visit are the Propylea Temple of Nike, the Erechtheion Temple and you must see the Dionysus Theater. I learned of this theater while studying Greek Tragedies in theatre school, and it was amazing to see this famous theater. Also, don’t miss seeing the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the sanctuary of Asclepius.

The Propylaea

The grand entrance to the Acropolis sets the stage for what lies beyond. Walking through the Propylaea is like stepping back in time, with each step taking you closer to the heart of ancient civilization.

As you ascend the majestic pathways leading to the heart of the Acropolis, the Propylaea stands as a monumental gateway, inviting visitors into the ancient world’s most revered sanctuary.

Constructed between 437 and 432 BC under the guidance of the architect Mnesicles, the Propylaea was envisioned as a grand entrance, symbolizing the transition from the mortal world to the divine abode of the gods. Its architectural grandeur, with Doric columns and a meticulous design that balances aesthetics and function, captures the essence of Athenian democracy and artistic excellence.

Walking through this historic portal, one can almost hear the footsteps of ancient philosophers, statesmen, and pilgrims who entered the Acropolis with awe and reverence.

The Erechtheion

Located across the grounds from the Parthenon the Erechtheion is an exquisite temple, dating back to 421-406 BC. It stands out for its unique structure, the famous Porch of the Caryatids, where six gracefully carved female figures serve as architectural supports in place of traditional columns.

This temple, built to honor both Athena and Poseidon, hosted a sacred olive tree and a saltwater well that symbolized the contest between the two gods for the patronage of Athens. You will also want to visit Poseidon’s Temple when in Athens.

The Temple of Athena Nike

The Temple of Athena Nike is my personal favorite. It is a temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena and Nike Goddess. Athena Nike may be the smallest of the temples of the Acropolis, but I love its location standing on the edge of a high cliff. 

This small yet significant temple is a beautiful example of Ionic architecture. Its delicate proportions and intricate details capture the eye and the imagination. Purchase  skip the line tickets  in advance to avoid queues.

Odeon of Herodes Atticus

Odeon in ancient Greece was a building for singing and musical shows. In Athens, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is the theatre that sits at the base of the Acropolis. To this day it hosts world-renowned artists, like the Foo Fighters in 2017 and Sting in 2018.  See details of events at the Odeon here.

And did you know that it is still in operation? It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch a concert in the oldest of venues among ancient ruins. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is not only historic and intimate, but every seat offers great views of the stage. As part of the Epidaurus Festival every summer, the Odeon hosts dozens of concerts. Don’t be afraid to attend theatre events! Unless noted specifically, theater shows will have English subtitles.

Theater of Dionysus

Nestled on the southern slopes of the Acropolis, you will pass the Theater of Dionysus on your way down. Make sure to stop and take a look, as you can get very close to its seats and on its stage.

The tour is designed to begin at the Side Acropolis entrance from the south-east slopes of the hill.

How to get there: The Acropolis of Athens is visible just about anywhere in the city and the easiest way to get there is from the Acropolis metro station (Red Line). You will take the exit toward Makrigianni street and walk up the road until you reach Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrianized street that runs below the Acropolis hill. You’ll turn left onto Dionysiou Areopagitou and then immediately turn right to walk up a short flight of stairs. On your left, you will see the South Slopes entrance.

Fancy a tour of the Acropolis? That will be £4,300 please! Fury as Greece plans to bring in 'elitist' tour prices as the famous site is swamped by 22,000 tourists a day

Furious tourists have blasted Greek officials over plans to introduce 'elitist' tour prices for exclusive access to the Acropolis. 

The Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a symbol of ancient Greek civilization and has become a must-see destination for tourists worldwide.

The historic site, situated in Athens, typically welcomes around 22,000 visitors a day during the peak summer season - which inevitably leads to overcrowding.

To alleviate overcrowding and offer a more intimate experience, the Greek culture ministry has introduced a scheme allowing small groups of up to five people to explore the site outside of regular hours.

However, the proposed price tag of £4,285 (€5,000) for a small group has sparked outrage among travellers, including Jackie and Malcolm Love, who were recently left bewildered at the proposed rates.

The couple, from Ipswich, had visited Acropolis in April, and, upon stumbling across congested crowds of tourists at the site, opted to experience it from a distance.

Speaking to the Guardian , Jackie explained: 'We didn't go, not with all those people.'

The Love's pondered whether to do a private tour instead - but were left gobsmacked after discovering the sky-high cost of an 'exclusive' tour led by experts. 

Malcolm, a lorry driver, said, 'We couldn't pay that,' as Jackie added, 'Crazy prices. Certainly not for people like us.'

Under the new scheme, up to four groups of five people each can enjoy guided tours led by expert archaeologists during exclusive time slots from 7am to 9am and 8pm to 10pm - hours outside the official opening and closing times. 

This initiative aims to provide tourists with a more intimate and less crowded experience of the historic landmark before thousands of sightseers ascend the rocky hill 

Nikoleta Valakou, the president of the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development - a body connected to the culture ministry said: 'We've had requests from tour operators for this for a very long time.'

According to Valakou, the ministry is prepared to permit tours for individuals providing they are willing to cover the group fee of €5,000 - which could result in the culture ministry bringing in up to €40,000 (£34,124) a day. 

Despite the hefty cost, Valakou adds that the tour offers additional incentives, including gifts of souvenirs to sightseers. Yet, for many tourists, the prohibitive pricing remains a major deterrent. 

However, the decision has triggered anger among tourists as well as Greek natives, with Costas Zambas, who fronted restoration works at the Acropolis for more than 25 years, blasting the measure. 

He told the Guardian: 'It's plain elitist. The very notion goes against the spirit of a place that we associate with democracy. It doesn't sit well.' 

Valakou has said that the culture ministry has taken criticism on board, and has insisted that 'revenues will be reinvested,' as the newly-proposed Acropolis tour remains a 'pilot program that will be open to change.'

It comes as  London tourist attractions have emerged as the biggest holiday price hike of the past 50 years , according to new Which? analysis of the changing cost of travel.

Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. ‘It’s plain elitist’: anger at Greek plan for €5,000 private tours of Acropolis

Archaeologists and guides among critics who say scheme goes against what symbol of democracy should represent

J ackie and Malcolm Love stood amid a bevy of tourists in the heart of Athens taking in the Acropolis with a mixture of awe and admiration. The Greek capital’s greatest classical site was truly magnificent, they said, but the crowds had been such, even in April, that they preferred to experience it from a distance.

“We didn’t go, not with all those people,” said Jackie, looking up at the fifth-century monument from the cobbled boulevard below. “We didn’t think it’d be the best thing to do, did we?” she said, nudging her husband.

The couple, enjoying a city break from Ipswich, their English hometown, had pondered whether to do a private tour instead. The Greek culture ministry is planning personalised visits to the ancient complex – at €5,000 (£4,285). “We wouldn’t pay that,” said Malcolm, a lorry driver. “Crazy prices,” Jackie chipped in. “Certainly not for people like us.”

The Acropolis is by far Greece’s biggest attraction, drawing more than 22,000 visitors a day last summer, forcing authorities to introduce tough controls , including a time-slot system.

This year, officials have gone a step further, announcing a scheme that allows sightseers to beat the crowds and experience the Periclean masterpiece on an exclusive basis. The initiative foresees up to four groups of five people being guided by expert archaeologists around the site between 7am to 9am and 8pm to 10pm – before opening and after closing times – to avoid the thousands of selfie-snappers who hourly ascend the rocky hill. “We’ve had requests from tour operators for this for a very long time,” said Nikoleta Valakou, the president of the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development, a state body connected to the culture ministry.

The ministry, she said, was prepared to permit tours for individuals, provided they were willing to pay the group fee. “There’ll be souvenirs too,” added Valakou. “A replica of a coin, perhaps, or copy of a small statue … something to conjure memories of the unique experience.”

But the measure – part of an overhaul of ticketing policy at more than 350 archaeological sites and museums managed by the Greek culture ministry – has triggered anger and derision, including from archaeologists. Guides have described it as impractical and critics have argued it runs counter to the spirit of everything the world’s pre-eminent symbol of democracy is supposed to represent. “The next thing you know people will be making marriage proposals and drinking champagne up there,” said Despina Koutsoumba, the vice-president of the country’s archaeologists’ association. “They’ll feel entitled, if they’ve spent that sort of money, to do whatever they want at the site.”

The very idea, she said, was “unacceptably exclusive”. After all, the monument was the emblem of democratic Athens in which citizens enjoyed equality before the law.

“What this says is Greece is willing to give people who have money the ability to enjoy the Acropolis in a very exclusive way while leaving out those who simply don’t have such means. We’re utterly opposed to it,” Koutsoumba added.

Previously, only world leaders, royalty and the odd celebrity had been granted access to the site out of opening hours.

The public, with the exception of academics and preservationists, have one day – the August full moon – to savour the temples at night.

As opposition has mounted, critics have questioned the wisdom of the decision at a time when the wealth gap between the rich and poor has become ever more accentuated. “It’s plain elitist,” said Costas Zambas who headed restoration works at the Acropolis for over 25 years.

“The very notion goes against the spirit of a place that we associate with democracy. It doesn’t sit well.”

With Athens at the sharp end of the climate emergency, tourist guides have raised objections over the workability of a scheme that for the vast majority will mean the site opening at 9am instead of 8am. Last summer the Greek capital – continental Europe’s southernmost metropolis – experienced record temperatures of up to 45C (113F), compelling officials to take the unprecedented step of closing the Acropolis for several days.

“If they push back opening hours to 9am because of these private tours it’s going to be a disaster,” said Kriton Piperas, who until recently was the head of the 4,000-strong Panhellenic Federation of Tourist Guides. “For several years our union has been pressing for the Acropolis to open earlier precisely because of the changing weather. Don’t forget with the lack of shade it’s that much hotter up there.”

Increasingly, he said, Greece’s pro-business centre right government saw culture through an exclusively commercial lens. “They look at the Acropolis and anything associated with tourism as a product,” he said. “This idea of unique tours is like putting a price tag on the site, it reminds me of an auction where the highest bidder wins and is told ‘you can have it all to yourself’. It’s wrong and bound to lead to trouble.”

Ticket-holders on cruise ships, which are the source of ever more day-trippers to the Greek capital, often book months in advance and are on a very tight schedule. Most are waiting in line at the Acropolis by 8am.

In her office overlooking a central Athens boulevard, Valakou said the culture ministry had taken the criticism onboard. The tours, it is estimated, could bring in up to €40,000 a day, with proceeds going to cash-starved cultural projects.

“Revenues will be reinvested,” she said. “As the Acropolis will be the first for such tours it’ll be a pilot programme and we’ll be open to change.”

The omens are not all bad. The scheme has been met with delight by some in the Greek diaspora where the well-heeled have already suggested they will be signing up.

“I’ve heard from dozens of friends who’ve expressed interest in joining these bespoke tours,” said Peter Poulos, the executive director of the Hellenic Initiative, a global Greek diaspora philanthropic organisation.

“Why not relieve people of their money if it’s going to help protect and preserve our cultural monuments for generations to come? We all support the loftiest of ideals but at the end of the day ideals aren’t going to pay the hard costs needed to run a site of this magnitude.”

Depart for Larnaca, Cyprus, on an overnight flight.

Arrive this morning and transfer to the Indigo Hotel Larnaca for check-in. Guests who opt for the suggested flights will meet tour representatives at the airport and join the group transfer to the hotel.

This morning, you may choose between tours of Nicosia or Kition, fascinating sites featuring millennia of cultural treasures.

Explore Cyprus’s millennia-old capital, Nicosia, once ruled by Byzantines, Venetians, and the British. Nicosia is “the world’s last divided capital,” with a UN-monitored buffer zone between the Greek Cypriot-controlled south and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. Visit the Cyprus Museum and its extensive array of archaeological artifacts and ancient Cypriot art. After lunch, see the elaborately beautiful Selimiye Mosque, which was originally constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries as the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Sophia and later converted into an Ottoman mosque.

Alternatively, explore Larnaca starting with the ancient city of Kition, where Mycenaean Achaeans arrived in the 13th century B.C., followed by Phoenicians in the ninth century B.C. Join your expert guide to explore Kition’s remains, including the Temple of Aphrodite-Astarte, built by the Phoenicians, and a 60-foot-long Roman mosaic. After lunch, transfer to the Troodos Mountains to view the world’s largest group of painted Byzantine churches and monasteries. This UNESCO-recognized collection of monuments, richly decorated with frescoes and murals, highlights the evolution of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting in Cyprus over 500 years. These monuments range from small churches to monasteries such as the ornate Monastery of St. John Lampadistis, with its blend of Italian Renaissance and Byzantine art.

Step ashore in Paphos, the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, according to legend. Established by Greek settlers during the Mycenaean era, the city was eventually captured by Ptolemy I of Egypt and later the Romans, who claimed it as the island’s capital. On a guided walking tour of the Archaeological Park of Nea Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, visit the exquisite Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, and Aion, ancient Roman villas built from the second through the fifth centuries A.D. Marvel at their beautifully well-preserved mosaic floors depicting mythological and hunting scenes. View the medieval ruins of the Castle of Forty Columns, a seventh-century fortress named for its many granite columns.

Transfer to the Church of Chrysopolitissa, originally founded by the apostles Paul and Barnabas in 46 A.D. See the ruins of its fourth-century basilica and medieval Ottoman baths. View the modest yet famous St. Paul’s Pillar, said to mark the spot where the apostle Paul was whipped during his first missionary journey to Cyprus. After lunch on board, visit the Tombs of the Kings, followed by a visit to the Monastery of St. Neophytos. Carved out of the mountains, it houses a noteworthy ecclesiastical museum containing icons dating from the 16th century.

Return to the ship and set sail forTürkiye. .

Attend a morning lecture as the ship sails to Antalya, Türkiye’s largest Mediterranean city, renowned for its Greek, Roman, and Byzantine landmarks against a backdrop of the Taurus Mountains.

First, head south along the coast to the ancient trade center of Perge, once claimed by Lycians, Greeks, and Romans. Perge’s archaeological site features well-preserved bath complexes, an agora, basilicas, a theater, a stadium, and impressive fortifications. Nearby is the Antalya Archaeological Museum, notable for its collection of sculptures unearthed from the ancient site. In Aspendos, stop at the renowned Roman amphitheater built during Marcus Aurelius’s reign, known for its acoustics.

Return to Antalya and Emerald Azzurra , gathering for the captain’s welcome reception and dinner this evening.

Anchor off Türkiye’s fabled Turquoise Coast, named for the beautiful blue color of the waters, and board a tender into Kas, an ancient Lycian trading port.

Explore the remarkably restored, 4,000-seat limestone Hellenistic Theater, a rare relic of the ancient Lycian city, constructed in the first century B.C. Also, behold a well-preserved Lycian tomb located in Kas’s historical center. After a transfer to Kekova Bay, board glass-bottom boats and cruise for a mesmerizing perspective on the ancient submerged city of Simena. Below your feet, watch as ruins and rock-cut tombs appear in the clear turquoise waters.

Return to the ship and set sail for the island of Rhodes.

The ancient Lycians, initially nomads, settled in mountainous southwestern Türkiye in the eighth century B.C. and became known for their cliffside rock-cut tombs. Arrive in the beautiful port of Fethiye and transfer to the UNESCO-listed ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, set on a cliff overlooking the Xanthos River, and delve into its rich history dating back to the eighth century B.C. Join an expert guide to explore its acropolis, Byzantine basilica, theater, and rock-cut tombs, remnants of its cosmopolitan past as a cultural, commercial, and political hub. Uncover connections between the Lycians, Greeks, and Persians, and remnants of the city’s later conquest by the Romans.

While here, discover the Nereid Monument, an intricately crafted tomb built in the fourth century B.C., showcasing a fusion of Lycian, Greek Ionic, and Persian architectural styles. An early example of Greek-style temple-tombs and a precursor to the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the monument was named after sea nymphs from Greek mythology.

Continue to nearby Letoon, the ancient Lycian sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Leto and her twin children, Artemis and Apollo. See Letoon’s temples and colonnaded galleries that shed light on the religious practices and mythological beliefs of the Lycians.

Return to the ship for lunch and depart for Rhodes.

The island of Rhodes was known in antiquity for its schools of philosophy, rhetoric, and sculpture, including its mythical Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. From 1309 to 1523, the the Knights of St. John occupied the city, surrounding it with fortifications they expertly maintained. Upon morning arrival, explore the UNESCO-listed fortified town, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Walk along the Street of the Knights, overflowing with mosaics, finely carved portals, balconies, and coats of arms. Then visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed in the medieval Hospital of the Knights, and see its collection of vases, figurines, Hellenistic mosaic floors, and more.

After morning arrival into Bodrum, delve into the history of Halicarnassus, visiting the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which showcases ancient artifacts from shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea.

Have lunch on board as the ship sails to Izmir.

After an afternoon at sea, celebrate your journey at the captain’s farewell reception and dinner.

Disembark this morning in Izmir and transfer to the airport for your flights home.
