Best Kayaking Tours In Kauai (2024)

Kauai is one of the largest islands in Hawaii and is famous for its rugged landscapes, vast green mountains, and epic coastline featuring wonderful beaches ideal for kayaking.

Often referred to as the Garden Isle due to the amount of rainforest here, you’ll find plenty of things to do on this gorgeous island. This includes visiting Waimea Canyon State Park and searching for marine life at Poipu Beach Park.

One experience you don’t want to miss out on is a kayaking tour, as this offers a fantastic way to explore the island and get panoramic sights right from the ocean.

Each tour offers something unique as there are many kayaking tour companies around the island.

Where To Go Kayaking In Kauai

Kauai is a kayaking hotspot and there are plenty of awesome places for you to explore. Before we take a look at the tour options, let’s dive into the best areas to go kayaking in Kauai first.

Kayak Wailua River

Being the largest navigable river on the island makes the Wailua River a great spot for water activities. At 20 miles long, it takes you through one of a kind jungles and past impressive waterfalls so it offers a lot of scenery. The water here is typically pretty calm, and you don’t have to worry about rapids.

The Na Pali Coast is around 17 miles long and is one of the island’s most sacred and visited spots. Compared to the Wailua River, it can be quite demanding making it more suitable if you’re looking for an adventure and consider yourself a more advanced kayaker.  Along the way, you’ll be treated to striking cliff faces, sea caves, and pristine beaches. You can find it on the northwest side of Kauai.

If you’re a fan of birdwatching and wildlife enthusiast, then Huleia River may be the perfect kayaking spot for you. The Huleia River runs through the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge which gives visitors a great chance of seeing rare birds along the way. The waters are relatively calm too so kayaking won’t require too much physical effort.

kayak hanalei river

The Hanalei River offers the chance to kayak into the sea and head inland. Typically, you start from the pier in Hanalei Bay and then head upstream if you want to explore this part of Kauai. It’s another incredibly scenic area, so you’ll want to take your time and appreciate the views.

There’s also the Kalihiwai River found on the north shore of Kauai island. It offers calm paddling conditions without any fast currents. This makes it a family-friendly place and also a good paddle boarding spot if you’re more into that.

Best Kauai Kayaking Tours

1. outfitters kauai hidden valley falls kayak adventure.

Outfitters Kauai undeniably runs some of the best kayaking tours in Kauai and the Hidden Valley Falls Kayak adventure is one of the top choices. You walk around for 1.5 miles before kayaking for 60-90 minutes, along with some swimming in between.

This popular hiking and kayaking tour takes you through Huleia National Wildlife Refuge. You can witness epic landscapes like a gorgeous waterfall, spot some unique birds, and paddle within one of the filming spots for Jurassic Park!

It’s an easier alternative compared to the other tour listed down below as you won’t need to paddle back against the wind. Instead, you take a motorized canoe back to the starting point.

It’s the only tour in Hawaii that offers this easy option. Families with young children or older travelers (and anyone really) will find it quite suitable, assuming you can handle the hike.

2. Kayak Kauai Hanalei Blue Lagoon Paddle & Snorkel

If you want to add snorkeling to your itinerary, consider the Blue Lagoon Paddle & Snorkel by Kayak Kauai. In addition to kayaking, you get to spend around 4 hours birdwatching and snorkeling for a great all-rounded experience.

This family-friendly tour allows children over the age of 5 to participate as long as they’re accompanied by an adult. The whole family can enjoy the beauty of the Hanalei River and Bay as a group!

Not only can you spot amazing creatures like sea turtles and dolphins on this tour, but you’ll also get a glimpse of Makana Mountain. You also make a stop by Hanalei Bay beach.

One thing that we like about this kayak tour is that the knowledgeable guides teach visitors a little about the history and traditions of Kauai.

3. Napali Kayak

napali kayak

If you prefer to go sea kayaking, you’ll want to book with this tour company. Napali Kayak offers one and two day trips that allow you to paddle alongside the Na Pali coastline and see some of the deep valleys and waterfalls.

Participants need to be at least 14 years old for their day trips, and you’ll need to be fit enough to kayak for around 10-17 miles. Each tour varies by length so choose the most suitable one.

No matter what you decide, you’re treated to breathtaking views and might even spot some of Hawaii’s amazing marine life, like turtles and seals.

If you’re after an exhilarating experience, National Geographic once voted these tours to as the best adventures in the nation!

This is a challenging excursion, so while it may not be the best choice for families, it’s perfect for adventurous singles or couples looking for some thrills. You can read about my full experience kayaking the Na Pali coast with them .

4. Ali’i Kayaks

Secret Falls Kauai

Ali’i Kayaks takes visitors on a trip to explore Secret Falls with their kayaking and hiking tour.

It lasts 5 hours and those aged 5+ can participate as long as they can keep up with the physical demands of navigating the Wailua River and hiking the trail. Luckily you can rely on an experienced and helpful guide to lead the way and keep you safe.

It consists of a 2-mile moderate hike, stream crossings, and a 4-mile kayaking trip. However, it’s not too challenging as first-time kayakers are welcome to try.

You paddle along the Wailua River and the trek takes you to the beautiful Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls. It’s one of the most famous waterfall spots on Kauai.

5. Outfitters Kauai Wailua Waterfall Kayak Tour

Wailua Falls Drone Photo

Outfitters Kauaui is another tour offered by Outfitters Kauai. This tour is suitable for all ages aside from children under 5. However, it requires relatively good fitness levels as you’ll need to walk for two miles first.

Afterward, you’ll kayak for around 60-90 minutes, and get to visit Wailua Waterfall. Being one of the most impressive waterfalls on the island, it’s one of the most unique attractions in all of Hawaii.

The scenery in the area is beautiful but be prepared to get muddy and wet, as the rainforest climate here means plenty of rain showers. So bring some proper clothing and good hiking shoes for this experience.

Lunch and drinks are included throughout the day with the tour, and there are usually two options available to choose from, either in the very early morning or close to the afternoon. Times do vary by season. We also included them in our list of Kauai zipline tours .

6. Kayak Wailua

The guided tour along the Wailua River lasts around 5 hours and is available for everyone. It’s also suitable for all skill levels, so you don’t need any previous kayaking experience which is always a bonus for complete beginners.

On this kayak tour, you get to hike some of Kauai’s hiking trails and swim below a beautiful waterfall in Secret Falls. Depending on the group or person you’re bringing along, you can choose from single, double, or triple kayaks in case you want to stay together.

Kayak Wailua offers six starting times so there is flexibility when it comes to planning out your day. These times range from 8 am to 1 pm, and you must check in at least 20 minutes early.

You can also get to learn all about the local history and legends as you paddle upstream. Based on our own experience, the Wailau River has still waters and wonderful views, making it an ideal place to visit.

Customer Feedback

three friends jumping

This excursion was the HIGHLIGHT of our whole trip! Seriously a 'Bucket List" experience! We went to Kauai to specifically kayak this coast line. Annie...Where do I begin? She was the MOST positive, engaging, charismatic host. She truly had our best interest at heart. She was encouraging and compassionate, however she also let us know if we needed to be paired with others, she would over-ride our 'plan' but since we all worked well together, everyone just had the BEST DAY EVER!!

david and eric clevin

A huge mahalo to the group at Napali Kayak! We had a blast but more so gained an experience full of memories and feelings that will last a lifetime. This was such an adventure. The intense challenge was part of the 5 stars for us. We thought the staff did a tremendous job setting us up for expectations and performance out there in the open ocean. Annie's serious pep talk and dire warnings fired me up like I was going into battle, and I guess we sort of did battle our way through the most beautiful coastline in the world.

kelsea D

The whole crew at Napali Kayak are great, they are super friendly even bright and early before a long day on the water. I was lucky enough to have Captain Annie take us on the epic journey down the remarkable Napali Coast. he jewel of the trip of course was Kalalau, aka garden of eden. The most beautiful place i have ever seen. Fully in love and absolutely would paddle with this company again! Very professional, caring and amazing staff!!!!

Paddling through the water near the Na Pali Coast

We did the 17miles kayak day trip and it was worth every cent we spent! Annie and Nick were great guides, taking care of everything and assuring that we had a good time. It is a pretty long day out and be prepared for a sometimes uncomfortable seating position and some waves. But if you make use of the little breaks in between to stretch your legs and jump into the water, you'll be fine! And even if getting back into the kayak seems impossible to do, it is in fact not that hard. It was a great day and the coolest way to see the napali coast, and dolphins, and beautiful beaches! Highly recommended!

The adventure of a lifetime begins at the end of the road.

Napali Kayak invites you to join us for a sea-kayaking adventure along the emerald cliffs of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.

We use the highest quality sit-on-top tour kayaks with rudders, Werner paddles and cozy seat backs. Most importantly, we specialize in fun! We also have the North Shore’s highest quality, lowest priced kayak rentals.

The Guided Kayak Adventure on the Wailua River Tour is perfect for travelers young and old, who just want to experience a different side of Hawaii.

Start off by meeting your guide, where they’ll give you and your party a paddling lesson and ensure everyone feels confident before starting on the adventure.

Head down ethereal waterways through the middle of the lush greenery and colossal mountains as you listen to your guide’s interesting stories.

They’ll not only share their personal anecdotes, but plenty of info about the local flora and fauna, Hawaiian history, supernatural happenings, and other cool stuff! Stretch those legs with a tranquil nature walk on your way to Secret Falls.

Breathe in the cool air, take photos of the waterfalls, animals, and unique plants as your guide leads the way.  One of the highlights of the hike is seeing and learning some of the royal Hawaiian monarchy along with their family who lived here.

There are plenty of opportunities for photos, and you’ll also get to take a dip in a cool pool after all that hiking! Seeing the Secret Waterfall alone is worth it, but the entire experience is fantastic from the very beginning.

Your Guide to Vacationing in Kauai

Getting around in kauai, staying safe in kauai, communicating in kauai, what to pack when vacationing in kauai, interesting facts about kauai, get ready to have fun in kauai.

When planning any vacation, it is important to know the details about where you are going so that you are well-prepared. Figuring things out last minute, or when you actually arrive, can mean disaster for your trip and that’s the last thing you need. Here is some valuable information about Kauai that may make planning your vacation easier.

If you plan on seeing more of the island than just the immediate area around the resort you are staying at and a few select tours or attractions, you may want to plan on renting a vehicle. However, if your hotel or resort is centrally located around an area with a lot of the attractions you wish to visit, you will probably want to save the money on the rental car and just use a taxi or even rent a scooter or other cheaper methods of travel.

Kauai has relatively low crime rates and is generally considered a safe place to travel. However, as with any tourist destination, you always want to take precautions when traveling to protect yourself. It’s important not to show off flashy jewelry or expensive cameras. Always have your identification on you in case you are injured or sick and need to get medical help. And always keep your wits about you – don’t drink too much so you can keep your bearings at all times.

Because Kauai is an island, there are a lot of beaches to swim and many Na Pali boat tours. Don’t swim on secluded beaches unless you are familiar with the tides. When swimming at popular beaches, always be aware of lifeguards and obey their rules and instructions. When on Kauai snorkel tours, your captain and crew will brief you with safety instructions and it is important to follow these at all times.

Traveling in the time of Covid

Like many other destinations worldwide, tours and visitor attractions in Kauai have adopted special procedures.

Wearing a mask in mandatory in many locations. You will be expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter public buildings.

Keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You will be expected to keep your distance inside minibuses and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, the State of Hawaii welcomes visitors but requires pre-travel testing for Covid-19. You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the State of Hawaii Portal .

Eco-Tourism and Sustainability in Kauai

The Hawaiian Archipelago offers many areas of outstanding natural beauty and protected wildlife areas you can explore. In order to maintain this wonderful place for future generations, many of the local tour companies operate eco-friendly tours.

When considering the tours we review on the World Travel Guides website, note that there are often eco-friendly options that empower you to become a more sustainable traveler. This is especially true around the islands of Hawaii. Take care of our world and it will take care of our children.

English is the official language of Hawaii. However, Hawaii is home to many cultures and you will probably run into both locals and tourists that speak many other languages. Pidgin English is the local language of Kauai. You can also hear Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and Portuguese. Native Hawaiians appreciate Hawaiian words and locations being pronounced correctly so if you don’t know how to say something, it is best to ask. A local guide can help you as well.

The atmosphere is very casual in Kauai. You can wear shorts even when dining at a restaurant but if you are wearing a swimsuit, be sure to wear a coverup or shirt over it. Many people wear slippers even to dine out at a restaurant as it is part of the customary “dress code” of the island; however, some places may require close toed shoes. If you are coming from one of the many Kauai snorkel tours, you will want to make sure you are covered up appropriately with an Aloha shirt or cover up as well as dry shorts and slippers or shoes.

The highest point on the Kauai island is Kawaikini Peak and the whole island is only 552 square miles. This makes it a relatively small island. Its state bird is the Nene and the “island color” is purple. The state flower that represents Kauai is the Mokihana which can be found abundantly in the tropical forests that cover most of the island.

Kauai is one of those places that must be seen and experienced to really appreciate. Its beauty is unique and cannot be surpassed except by other Hawaii locations which offer similar beauty but always different. You cannot see the stunning cliffs or unique tropical forests unique to this island anywhere else.

So, pack your bags and get ready to enjoy a whole new world at your resort, on beautiful beaches, and of course, on your Kauai snorkel tours!

Guide To Kayaking In Kauai, Hawaii

Known as the Garden Island, Kauai is the most northerly island in Hawaii and said to be the oldest. It’s home to several slow moving rivers, many beautiful bays and a rugged, unspoilt coastline, meaning there is plenty of choice for paddling adventures.

We’ve put together a list of some of the best places to go kayaking in Kauai so you can enjoy some of the island’s most stunning natural scenery for yourself.

Table of Contents

Best Kayaking Locations in Kauai

1: wailua river.

Located on the east of the island, the Wailua River is the largest navigable river on Kauai and a  popular location for kayaking . It meanders through lush green jungle landscapes and past picturesque waterfalls and historic temples, or heiau.

The river is very calm and has no rapids. One of the main draws of the river is that you can  paddle upstream  and then hike to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls), where you can swim and stand underneath the waterfall.

Video: Kayaking And Hiking To Secret Falls, Kauai

Another attraction you likely won’t want to miss is  Fern Grotto , a natural cave in the lava rock that is covered by overhanging ferns and is only accessible by  kayak  or boat.

2: Na Pali Coast

Kayaking along the Na Pali Coast  can be one of the most scenic and adventurous paddling trips in the world. But this 17 mile trip from Haena Beach Park to Polihale State Park might not be for everyone. It can be pretty rough at times, with dangerous  surf .

It is advisable to  only paddle this route in the summer  when waves and currents are generally calmer.

Along the route  there are sea caves to discover and waterfalls to marvel at. The Napali Coast is on the northwestern side of Kauai and features towering cliffs and a wild landscape with no roads.

3: Hanalei River

The  slow moving Hanalei River  can be found on the north coast of the island. You can begin from the beach in Hanalei Bay and paddle upstream where you can pass under the old Hanalei Bridge (the current bridge is a replica of the original that was built in 1912).

The route takes you into the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, which provides essential habitat for a wide range of birds, including the world’s largest population of endangered Hawaiian ducks (koloa maoli).

4: Huleia River

The Huleia River flows through the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge and can be a great trip if you’re looking to spot wildlife, including endangered species of native birds.

The calm river can be accessed from Nawiliwili harbor in Lihue and from there you can paddle upstream through beautiful natural landscapes. And if any of it looks familiar, it’s because the Huleia River has been  used as a filming location  for several blockbuster movies, including Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

5: Kalihiwai River

The Kalihiwai River is located on the north shore of Kauai and can be a  gentle  paddling trip for families. It’s a shallow, slow moving river that can be accessed from  Kalihiwai Beach  in Kalihiwai Bay.

The calm river takes you through tropical jungle landscapes. There are waterfalls on this river, however they cannot be accessed without a tour guide because they are on private property on the  Princeville Ranch .

Not far from Kalihiwai Bay is the Kilauea volcano, which can be seen from the coast but can be very dangerous to kayak past as there can be molten lava pouring into the ocean.

Are There Any Good Kayak Tours To Check Out??

wailua river tour.

The  Wailua River Tour , provided by Kayak Wailua in Kapaa can be a great tour for family groups. They provide life jackets for all ages and sizes as well as triple, tandem or single kayaks, depending on the numbers in your party.

The guides escort you on your paddle up the Wailua River and on your hike to Secret Falls, giving you information on local legends and history along the way.

Napali Coast Tour

Napali Kayak offers several options of tours of the Napali Coast, including  a day trip  for the 17 mile journey from Haena Beach to Polihale Beach. On the tour, you’ll be guided along the wild coast, through sea caves and under or past waterfalls. There is also an option for a kayak camping tour.

Hidden Valley Falls Tour

The  tour to Hidden Valley Falls  takes you along the Huleia River, paddling through the jungle before stopping for a hike through the wilderness to reach waterfalls and secluded pools for swimming. The tour includes lunch and is suitable for beginners of all ages. Your return journey is by motorized canoe.

Isn’t Kilauea on the Big Island. One of the paragraphs mentioned kayaking past the lava.

Wailua River Sacred Falls Tour

Kauai Kayaking Tours

Paddle and Hike in the Wailua River Area

Sacred Falls new boardwalk!

The first quarter and the last quarter of the hiking trail have uneven surfaces with the challenges of muddy and slippery rocks, and crossing of streams. The new boardwalk covers about 70% of some of the most slippery and difficult parts of the trail.

*This five-hour guided tour is a wonderful waterfall adventure for the active family, combining idyllic paddling on the Wailua River and at times, depending on weather conditions,  a moderate to challenging hike to a remote bridal-veil waterfall.

The Wailua River became the center of activity for early Hawaiians and is known as one of Hawaii’s two most sacred places.

At night, it is said that one can still hear ancient drums thunder in concert with the nearby surf.

The trail leading to our sacred waterfall is a beautiful “greenhouse” where flowers, brooks and ferns abound. Swim by the waterfall.

The early Polynesian culture is represented here, steeped in a colorful past, rich with rock-wall terracing, legends and lore.

The setting for this jaunt is tranquil and tropical, the pace is unhurried. We delight in sharing the peaceful, pastoral existence of ancient Hawaii with you.

Bird watch for a night heron or coot.

Swim in the pools or stream leading from the falls (we don’t recommend swimming actually under Uluwehi waterfall due to falling rocks).

Come share the life and natural history of this mystical land and enjoy its great quiet with us!

Know that there is a learning curve to kayaking which is short and grasped by most.  If for any reason one is holding back a tour and is sent back and does not finish the tour, be aware that there is no refund!

When in doubt we don’t go out! At times the weather can conspire and conditions change and prevent us from safely reaching the falls e.g. not being able to safely cross the stream, and in those rare cases depending on progressed made, there may be a slight discount.

Leptospirosis

Since 1984 when we began celebrating the field and streams of Kaua’i we have not had a confirmed case of Leptospirosis. That said, know that you are taking a risk when plying our tropical rivers waters. Pregnant folks should, especially take heed.

CDC Leptospirosis Fact Sheet

Weight Limit Rule of Thumb

Our double kayaks can comfortably handle 500 pounds or less.

If participants surpass this weight limit we encourage a motor boat alternative.

At different times of the year the waterfall can be vary in volume from a trickle to impressive force.

The Secret is out!

When we first pioneered and began offering this tour to the public, a lot has changed. The main change is that the “Secret Falls” is today the best-known “secret” on the island. Nevertheless, we feel our guides will help you enjoy this tour for the paddle, serenity, and scenery you will stumble upon as you discover and share with many others, one of the best-kept known secrets of Kaua’i!

Embrace the Mud!

Trail can be muddy any time of the year make sure children and adults are up to the challenging potential of a slip and slide on the trail!

The trail can be hazardous for the ill-prepared and insist on clients availing themselves of our walking sticks.

This tour is doable by most people in average shape. If for any reason the paddle and/or hike portion is not accomplished by individuals, or if the weather does not allow e.g. stream crossing become dangerous,  there is no refund.

Travel Insurance

Safety is no accident and on every tour we pay special attention to this fact. That said, travel insurance is not a bad idea, especially if a “dark cloud” decides to follow you. Trailblazer – February 1, 2024

Outstanding trip! Captain Jenn and crew Colleen and Amanda were fabulous hosts. We did see whales, but the unexpected highlight was our time with the Spinner dolphins. I will try to post video – so many of them – hanging out with us right beside the boat.

Experience a Peaceful Kayak Tour & Explore Wailua Waterfall

Discover the wonder and beauty of the Wailua River on an unforgettable guided tour that includes kayaking, hiking, and swimming under a waterfall. No prior kayaking experience is needed to enjoy this adventure, which is recommended for all ages. Many of our kayakers are first-timers!

We have six different tour times to choose from Monday through Friday. Tours begin at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. Check in 20 minutes prior to your tour time. You are greeted by our friendly staff and given dry bags and coolers to pack your belongings. After you have checked in, our guide conducts an orientation with safety tips and paddling instruction.

We then transport you in our new van across the river to the Wailua River Marina, about a 2-minute drive. The kayaks are outfitted and launched for you. Attach your dry bag and nylon cooler to your kayak, and off you go with your guide. Couples usually kayak in a double. If you have an odd number of people in your party, we also offer the option of triples and singles. We provide life jackets for all ages and sizes. Wearing them is only required for kids aged 12 years and younger.

Our friendly experienced guides all know the river from top to bottom. They all love their job and are always eager to share their extensive knowledge of  history, legends, and interesting stories about the Wailua River Valley with you. They can identify for you all of the flora and fauna that you encounter along the way. The guides have an abundance of information regarding hiking trails, camping spots, great local restaurants, and other popular outdoor activities. We spend plenty of time at Secret Falls, where you can learn about the Garden Island.

We paddle upstream for about 45 minutes to the trail head where the kayaks are secured. You carry your dry bag and cooler the short 45-minute walk/hike to Secret Falls. The king’s pool at the base of the falls is a great place to swim and cool off. Few places in the world are better for enjoying a BYO (bring our own) picnic lunch and taking photos of the stunning views after a refreshing swim. After languishing in paradise and soaking up nature, we begin the trip back to civilization.

A typical round trip averages 5 hours including paddling, hiking, swimming, and picnicking. We do have occasional rains, especially during the winter months. Our tours are seldom canceled unless the rain is heavy and sustained. Light rains are always welcome while paddling. After returning to the marina, we shuttle you back to your rental car. We are the only company that provides a changing room and shower (equipped with soap) to rinse off after the tour before going on to your other activities or dinner reservations.
