Pinehurst #10 opened last week. Want to play it?

The smart golfer’s guide to eating on the course, according to a nutrition expert

Eating well on the golf course is one of the most underrated ways to improve your score.

Welcome to Play Smart, a new game-improvement column that drops every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from Director of  Game Improvement content Luke Kerr-Dineen  to help you play smarter, better golf.

It was about this time last year when I decided to lose some weight. There was no real reality check moment for me; rather, it was a slow burn. More and more people seemingly all at once started referring to me as “big guy” — “hey, big guy!” — which caught me off guard. And then there were the times when I felt generally uncomfortable in my own body, which were growing more and more frequent. It was most notable when I was swinging a golf club. It was like I wasn’t — or maybe couldn’t — move as nimbly as I needed to.

So I shook things up. On the left I clocked-in at just north of 211; in the picture of me from two weeks ago on the right, I’m maintaining my goal weight of about 163.

The process of losing weight is actually very simple. You eat less of some things and more of others. You can read about all the stuff I learned right here , but ultimately it’s about the choices you make and your ability to stay disciplined. My favorite Bojack Horseman quote of all time pretty much sums it up:

“Every day it gets a little easier, but you gotta’ do it every day, that’s the hard part.”

Something that was indispensably important to me throughout it all was WW, formerly Weight Watchers. I use the app to track my food and genuinely love it, because the system isn’t about counting calories or telling you what you can’t eat, but rather helping you manage what you do.

And so, to glean some advice along those lines for all us day-in, day-out golfers out there, I called up WW’s Head of nutrition & wellness Jaclyn London , MS, RD, CDN, who shared a host of helpful tips for golfers about the kinds of foods they should eat on the course, whether they want to lose weight or not.

1. Drink your coffee guilt-free

I’ve often wondered whether drinking coffee is conducive to a sport like golf, where the rounds are long and the movements often require a calm, precise touch. But far from not being detrimental to your game, London says coffee can be a good for golfers, consumed at the right time and in the right dosage.

“A pre-round cup of coffee is a great way to up your energy level. It can contribute to your hydration goals and help you stay alert during your round,” London says, who points to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans of up to 400 mg of caffeine daily, and recommends finishing your coffee up to an hour before your round.

“Changing your coffee order to a 16 ounce latte, with low fat and skim milk, can also provide up to 16 grams of protein which will help you sustain that energy.”

2. Eat breakfast

You don’t  have to eat breakfast, London says, but she recommends it. Not just because it’s an easy way to up your energy levels, but because it’s a healthy habit: Skipping breakfast means your hunger will come back to haunt you later, and as the desperation to get something in your stomach mounts, you’re more likely to gorge on anything you can find.

The key, London says, is to use food as fuel to maintain a nice, steady energy level throughout your entire round.

“Establishing a pattern right off the bat of not skipping meals in the a.m. sets you up to make better choices all day — even if you’re not ravenous when you wake up,” London says. “Eating within 30 min. to one hour after waking up can help you get the day started and can provide you with some much-needed fuel in the tank.”

3. Don’t go crazy on carbs

Complex carbohydrates aren’t bad , despite what you may have heard, but it’s important to understand what they do best. In short: Carbs provide quick, intense jolts of energy. That can be extremely helpful for golfers, London says, as long as they stick to a 2-to-1 protein-to-carbs ratio.

“The glucose from the carbs gets into your bloodstream really fast,” London said. “You need the combination of carbs and protein, making sure that you maintain energy and feel satisfied throughout your round.”

4. Look for high-protein snacks

Snacking throughout your round is another healthy habit recreational golfers should take on board. And when they do, it’s important they look for higher-protein snacks that will provide some sustenance and steady energy.

“Dried cheese snacks like dried parmesan, a piece of fruit or a pack of dried unsweetened fruit; a pack of nuts or nut butters, are all great options,” London says. “You’re looking for mini-meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.”

5. Hydrate!

Drinking enough water on the golf course, especially during the hot days, is perhaps the single most important thing you can do. The benefits are almost innumerable: It improves your focus, maintains your energy levels, and aids in digestion, among many other things. And when you’re playing golf, you tend to lose water more quickly, so you need to replenish consistently.

“Hydration helps with just about everything,” London says. “It changes depending on your climate, but I use eight-to-10 glasses per day as a starting point for an active person.”

6. Remember the three Ts

There’ll be days when you fall off the wagon. You’ll stick around after your round, share a few beers and share a plate of something. It’s inevitable, and when it does happen, it’s important to dwell on it. Move on and get back to your consistent routine, based around what London calls the three “Ts”

The  type of food you’re eating

The  timing of when you’re eating your food

The  tools you’re using to manage it.

“I often say progress is better than perfection,” London says. “Practice making good choices so the the next time you’re coming into those type of situations, you’re not ravenous, but coming in from a hydrated, satisfied place where you don’t have as much desire to eat all the cheese fries.”

The hydration recipe every golfer should know to think, feel, and play their best

Even if you don’t know much about nutrition, you probably know that high-sugar drinks are a no-no. But what PGA Tour performance dietician Ryan Harmon has noticed is that golfers are taking it to an extreme: They think the answer to proper on-course hydration is sugar-free liquids. And that’s actually not what your body needs. Without sugar, which is a carbohydrate, you can’t properly hydrate.

“You don't want the sugar too high, but a lot of people feel like they shouldn't have any sugar at all in the fluid that they hydrate with. And the issue with that is that all the science shows that we actually absorb more of our electrolytes when there's a little bit of sugar in there,” Harmon said. “So if you have a few different kinds of carbohydrate sugar in your drink with your electrolytes, that's going to be the best option.”

Some sugar (but not too much)

RELATED: This mineral improves energy and endurance — female golfers probably aren't getting enough of it

Drinking plain water isn't enough; you need sugar, salt and electrolytes to maximize your hydration, Harmon explains. You need to get them either through adding an electrolyte powder to your drink, or snacking on foods that contain the correct balance of carbohydrate and sodium. Salted cashews and bananas are two good options. Dehydration results in a decrease in cognitive as well as physical performance, so it's worth stashing a few packets of electrolyte mix in your bag to have on hand during hot rounds.

"Hydration and snack recommendations for the course are complex because it's not a one size fits all scenario," Harmon says. The only way to create an optimized hydration plan is to work with a sport dietician, but there are some basic guidelines you can follow: First, start hydrating before you get to the golf course. Once you’re on-course, “The general recommendation is to consume 4 to 8 ounces of fluid with electrolytes every 15-20 minutes. Athletes incorporating salty snacks and carbohydrates may not require the use of an electrolyte powder, unless they are a salty sweater or a heavy sweater,” Harmon said.

Taste of the Masters: Bringing Augusta National's food experience to patrons at home

Change Text Size

From start to finish, the Masters Tournament has an identity all its own. Whether it’s the drive up Magnolia Lane or the green jacket donned by the victor, the Masters is known for a multitude of things: azaleas in full bloom in early spring, Rae’s Creek, Butler Cabin and the quintessential selection of food and drinks enjoyed exclusively by patrons in attendance. Or rather, that used to be the case.

Insert "Taste of the Masters," a food and beverage initiative spearheaded by Augusta National in 2020 when the tournament took place at a non-traditional time, in November, with no patrons on-site due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic challenged the sports and entertainment industry to adjust and adapt, and the Masters was no different. It began with a simple question from the team at Augusta National: What are some ways to help bring the experience to fans and make this a memorable tournament?

Aside from opening an online patron shop that allowed ticketed patrons to purchase Masters merchandise from home (the Masters only sells official Masters merchandise on the grounds at Augusta National), the team also came up with the idea of selling Masters food and drink kits to those ticketed patrons, which they dubbed "Taste of the Masters."

The club and hospitality team spearheaded this initiative by identifying the items that represented the Masters best. Without hesitation, the answer was obvious: pimento cheese.

There may be no other concession item in sports that holds the weight or reputation of Augusta National’s pimento cheese sandwiches. With the perfect amount of spice paired with cheesy creaminess and jammed between two pieces of fresh white bread, the pimento cheese sandwich has been a staple on the menu board at Augusta since the 1950s.

Beyond pimento cheese, the team knew they needed to fill the kits with other options to satisfy the appetites of all who planned to enjoy the meals from home. Pork bar-b-que and egg salad were added as entree options, as were sides including Augusta’s signature chocolate chip cookies and potato chips.

When tasked with the challenge of replicating the on-site experience, however, a final few pieces were vital. While the food offerings satisfied the taste aspect, to really give it that Masters feel they added authentic plastic Masters cups and sheets of the iconic Masters checkerboard serving paper.

The "Taste of the Masters" was such a hit that the team brought it back for the 2021 Masters, which featured partial patron attendance. The kits were now available to everyone, not just ticketed patrons, and sold out even faster.

And that was a wrap on the kits, or so the team thought.

The kits were discontinued in 2022, as patrons on-site could once again enjoy the full offerings while strolling the grounds. But overwhelming fan feedback suggested that the kits were missed.

Georgia Pecan Caramel Popcorn. (Courtesy of the Masters Tournament)

The team was not expecting "Taste of the Masters" to become a fan staple, but as folks expressed how important it was to have the kits, using them to create or enhance their traditions around watching the tournament together, it became clear it had. Augusta National recognized the opportunity for people to recreate the patron experience at home, and so, "Taste of the Masters" returned in 2023.

For 2024, the Augusta National team continued to look at ways to evolve and perfect the project. One enhancement for this year: Fans have had a say in what's included thanks to their feedback. Bar-b-que potato chips, Georgia pecan caramel popcorn and Masters coasters are included in the kit, with the popcorn’s inclusion a direct result of fan feedback. The team even added a smaller tasting kit as an option this year, also a direct result of fan feedback, which also includes fun accessories like food item placards and miniature Masters flag toothpicks to hold sandwiches together.

Pork bar-b-que sandwich with bar-b-que potato chips. (Courtesy of the Masters Tournament)

For Augusta National, the kits are yet another opportunity to go above and beyond for fans across the country while also paying homage to the tournament's roots in Augusta, Georgia. The food and beverage experience is part of Masters history, which started with the vision of Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who believed that food was key to the Masters’ evolution as an elite sporting experience for patrons. The two tournament pioneers wanted the menu to reflect a southern-style picnic, with sandwiches as an easy option that locals could create in their homes and bring to the course for the patrons.

The menu has come a long way since the Masters inception in 1934, with the Taste of the Masters as simply the next step in its evolution. What originally started as an almost regional, exclusive offering for ticketed fans in 2020 has now grown to a nationwide fan favorite in households across the country. As for whether the Masters pimento cheese sandwich has made its way to all 50 states, it’s hard to say, but 2024 is the first year where shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is available. And why stop there? Fan interest north of the border suggests that "Taste of the Masters" could be headed to Canada as well.

While nothing is guaranteed, "Taste of the Masters" looks to be around for the long haul.

Instruction For The Mental Game of Golf

Is What You Eat and Drink Killing Your Golf Scores?

  • December 10, 2013

David MacKenzie

It’s time to change what you eat and drink before and during your rounds if you want to reach your true potential as a golfer.

Golf isn’t the game it was 20 years ago. Golf is now much closer to “athlete” status and today’s golfers realize that they have to do everything they can to get an edge and that includes eating and drinking right – especially before and during a round. With the best food and drink for golf you can save 3-5 shots per round (at least) and this article will show you how to do it.

Have you ever felt exhausted during or after a round of golf? Then you’re not eating and drinking properly.

Golf is a unique sport in that you’re playing for 4-5 hours which is a long time to be burning calories and using your brain. It’s not like most other sports where you play intensively for an hour or so and react to what’s going on. Instead you need to switch your focus on and off for (on average) 86 times per round and then perform a precise physical action which depends on how well you’ve prepared for it. To choose the right shot, align correctly, pick the right club, read the greens etc. and then make a smooth swing, requires mental sharpness and physical energy that you won’t have if you haven’t fueled your body properly.

Here’s all you need to know (right from the Tour player play-book) to make sure you’re firing on all cylinders right up until the last putt on the 18th green. I should add that if you’re playing with your buddies and use golf as a time to indulge and eat hot-dogs and drink beer then I have nothing against that! But if you want to perform as best you can then I would advise that you follow these simple ideas and experiment with how you feel and see what it does for your scores.

The best pre-round preparation without swinging a golf club

The night before your round: rest.

Poor sleep affects growth hormone production and hence recovery from both physical and mental stress. You need a good quality sleep to think properly and access those mental skills you need for great performance. Here are a few tips to getting that great sleep before a big round:

Avoid alcohol: Although you get off to sleep quicker, it’s proven that you don’t reach the deeper levels of sleep to fully rest your brain and be sharp the following day.

Avoid drinking anything within 2 hours of going to bed : This way you avoid being woken up earlier than you need to go to the bathroom.

Avoid eating within 2 hours of going to bed: The increase in blood sugar inhibits sleep.

Free Mental Game Fundamentals eBook

The best food and drink for golf, hyrdrate like the tour pros.

Drinking water keeps your mind and body working properly and it’s critical for optimal brain function and muscle performance. If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, which limits your ability to concentrate and lowers your performance on the course. Being dehydrated by just 2-3% results in 10% lower performance which in an average round of golf, could be as high as 8 shots! The Tour pros take hydration very seriously and so should you, as it could make the difference between your best score and an average round.

Drink 16fl oz of water with your pre-round meal and another 8 fl oz (237 mL) 10 to 20 minutes before your round.

Make sipping water on every tee a habit (you’ll need to drink around 6fl oz every 30 minutes, more if it’s hot) as you’ll lose more and more electrolytes through sweat as the round progresses. Electrolytes is another term for the salts and minerals  that transmit electrical impulses across the cells in your body so that your muscles (and brain) work properly. When you sweat, you lose these electrolytes, so to maintain peak muscle and brain function, you need to replace them by drinking water and/or electrolyte solutions.

The best pre-round meal: Ideas for your meal before round of golf

Eat your pre-round meal about 2-3 hours before you play and eat a snack an hour before you head to the first tee. Studies show that a meal containing 200-300g of carbohydrates 2-3 hours before playing increase athletic performance. If you have an early morning round, be sure to have a healthy breakfast at least an hour before playing. The quality of the carbohydrate is important. Poor quality (starchy) carbohydrates like bagels, pancakes and donuts give you a surge of energy and raise insulin levels and eventually you crash and become lethargic. You want to focus on

those carbs you get from fruit and vegetables and if you eat bread, pasta or bagels, make sure they’re whole wheat.  You don’t need much fat or fiber but include a moderate amount of protein. Eat just enough to be neither hungry or full. Good examples would be:

  • Vegetable omelet with fruit
  • Bowl of steel-cut oatmeal with nuts
  • Grilled chicken or fish with salad and vegetables (Tiger’s choice)
  • Grilled chicken sandwich with soup
  • Whole wheat spaghetti and pasta sauce.
  • Whole wheat bagel with light cream cheese
  • Yogurt and fruit
  • Whole wheat toast and scrambled eggs

Snacks to eat before and during your round of golf

Eat these snacks in small amounts throughout the round to maintain energy and concentration levels. Small bites at regular intervals, just enough not to get hungry or full.

What the pros eat during a round* from Golf Digest:

  • Bill Haas : Fruit and nuts
  • Fredrik Jacobsen : Jerky
  • Adam Scott : Clif Bars
  • Yani Seng: Meiji bars (Chocolate covered almonds)
  • Aaron Baddley: Almonds
  • Jim Furyk: Lara Bars
  • Steve Marino: Nuun tablets in water
  • Ben Crane: Back Nine Electrolyte Tablets
  • Matt Kuchar: Almonds
  • Brittany Lincicome: Peant butter and Jelly Sandwich
  • Ben Curtis: granola bars and Amino Vital
  • Martin Laird: Vitalyte Electrolyte Tablets
  • Phil Mickelson: Bananas
  • Keegan Bradley: Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on multigrain bread, almonds, raisins, peanuts, trail mix, and always packs a few Clif Bars

Double bogey drinks and meals/snacks to avoid before and during golf:

  • Coffee (too much caffeine)
  • Fruit Juice (too much sugar)
  • Soda (too much sugar)
  • Energy drinks and bars (too much caffeine and sugar)
  • Fried breakfast (empty calories)
  • Pancakes (refined carbohydrate that will give you a burst of energy then make you crash)
  • Donuts (as above)
  • Most breakfast cereal (as above)
  • Anything that lacks carbs like scrambled eggs with no toast
  • Hot dogs (too high in sodium and saturated fat)
  • Most Granola Bars (too much sugar)
  • Beer: It’s a sedative and (unfortunately) will affect your coordination.

Many of the pros and players that I work with (including myself) have started using a system of products that are organic, whole food and packed with nutrients and highly bio-available protein but also low calorie. Not only do these systems balance out blood sugar allowing me to maintain a consistent mental focus but they also help to generally improve health leading to excess fat loss and lean muscle development.

Again, it took me a while to buy into the idea but now I wouldn’t go a day (and especially a round of golf) with the following in my body….

This diet plan includes:

1. A meal replacement shake.  Great protein carbs and healthy fats.  A much better alternative to the typical brands out there.

2. Energy shots (the healthy naturally caffeinated version) the doesn’t get you jittery but rather increases endurance strength and mental focus.

3. Supplemental nutrients.  A daily vitamin pack that goes my body everything it needs that it isn’t getting in today’s food supply.  Including the key athlete nutrients of resveratrol, vitamin D3 and CoQ10.

Those are just a few of the key systems/products I use and recommend to those I know and care about.  If you’re looking for the specific system I use let me know and I can direct you to the info.

I like this post for the most part. I disagree with encouraging toast with the scrambled eggs. All the toast will really do is spike your GI for a crash. If you must go for sprouted grain bread instead of whole wheat, more protein, lower GI.

12 Ultimate Golf Drinks: What To Drink on the Course

After I finish a round of golf, I think about all the tasty and fun drinks that I can have to complete my day after beating my golf buddies on the course. Sipping a cold one after a round has turned into a way to enjoy that experience even more.

From simple beverages to more advanced cocktails, there’s a golf drink here for everyone!

The 12 best golf drinks  include:

  • Transfusion
  • Bloody Caesar
  • Dirty Shirley
  • Bloody Mary
  • Whiskey Sour
  • Screwdriver
  • Jack and Coke
  • Glenmorangie

To learn how to make each drink and why they made my list, keep reading!

#1. Transfusion — Most Popular Golf Drink

#2. bloody caesar — spiciest drink, #3. dirty shirley — growing the fastest in popularity, #4. john daly — best cocktail for the summer, #5. bloody mary — best cure for a hangover, #6. whiskey sour — great choice to cover the taste of alcohol, #7. the classic screwdriver, #8. jack and coke — best for a hot day, #9. azalea — most tasty drink, #10. glenmorangie, #11. corona — for beer lovers, #12. coca-cola — best soft drink, what is the best non-alcoholic drink for golf, what is the best alcohol shot for the golf course, what is the drink named after a golfer.

Ingredients: Concord grape juice, ginger ale, vodka, and lime juice

Golf’s mightiest cocktail is the transfusion. President Dwight D. Eisenhower regularly drank the transfusion cocktail as a favorite at the Indian Wells Country Club in Palm Desert, California. Some speculate he even conceptualized this popular drink.

Transfusion grew in popularity in the 1950s. The beauty of the transfusion comes from how this country club drink only requires 4 ingredients: Concord grape juice, ginger ale, vodka, and lime juice.

Prep time: 2 to 3 minutes

Transfusion recipe:

  • Fill a highball glass with ice.
  • Measure 3 oz of vodka and pour it.
  • Pour 1.5 oz of Concord grape juice.
  • Give .25 oz of squeezed lime juice.
  • Add in the ginger ale with a sliced lime to garnish.

golf drinks bloody caesar

Ingredients: Lime wedge, celery stick, Clamato juice, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, vodka, celery salt

Walter Chell invented the Bloody Caesar in 1969, and it quickly skyrocketed to fame as one of Canada’s most popular drinks. The Bloody Caesar mixes in a fishy twist to the Bloody Mary. This popular drink has spicy and sour elements, and it may taste different depending on the variation you drink.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Bloody Mary recipe:

  • Coat the rim of a tall glass with celery salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  • Pour 2 oz of vodka, 4 oz of Clamato juice, 2 dashes of Tabasco sauce, 1 teaspoon of horseradish, 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, and stir them together.
  • Garnish the drink with a lime and a stick of celery.

Expert tip: Some people squeeze the garnish to add more flavor to the drink.

Ingredients: Vodka, lime juice, maraschino cherry liquor, and grenadine

The Dirty Shirley takes the innocent Shirley Temple mocktail and flips it into an alcoholic beverage for the golf course. The New York Times listed it as the Drink of the Summer in 2022, and it has continued to grow in popularity. No one knows its exact origins, but it would be safe to say that it came from Los Angeles in the 1930s. This drink boasts the same fruity flavor you loved about the Shirley Temple, but it comes with a kick of vodka.

Prep time: 1 minute

Dirty Shirley recipe:

  • Fill the glass with ice.
  • Pour 2 oz of vodka. Add 1 oz of grenadine.
  • Top with soda and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Ingredients: Vodka, lemonade, iced tea

The John Daly originates from the non-alcoholic Arnold Palmer beverage, which was popular at country clubs across the nation. Eventually, some folks began to experiment with the Arnold Palmer as an alcoholic drink. Most of the time, they’d call it the “adult Arnold Palmer.”

In 1991, John Daly  entered the golf scene with the bold entrance of a mullet and an aw-shucks kind of attitude. John Daly had a very public struggle with alcohol, and he lost $55 million in gambling from 1991 to 2007.

It’s believed that this classic golf cocktail was renamed from the “adult Arnold Palmer” to the “John Daly” in the mid-1990s. They did this less as an honor to him and more as a big joke for his love of alcohol. You can try it in numerous variations.

The John Daly ranks as one of the popular country club drinks you will find at almost every country club with a bar.

Prep time: 3 to 5 minutes

John Daly r ecipe:

  • Pour 1.25 oz of vodka
  • Mix in 2 oz of lemonade and 2 oz of iced tea.
  • Garnish it with a lemon.

golf drinks bloody mary

Ingredients: Celery salt, lemon wedge, lime wedge, celery stick, paprika, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, horseradish, tomato juice, and vodka

Most attribute Fernand Petiot with the creation of the bloody mary. He invented it while still a young bartender in 1921 at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. He published it in a recipe book, “Harry’s ABCs of Cocktails.” If you wish to concoct the best bloody mary — and this goes for most drinks — remember, the quality of the ingredients will make a difference.

The bloody Mary especially makes sense for golfers who hit the course hungover. Some evidence suggests that bloody mary can cure hangovers, whether it does though is anyone’s guess. At least it gives you the excuse to drink one of the best golf course drinks.

Prep time: 5 to 8 minutes

Bloody Mary r ecipe:

  • Put some celery salt onto a small plate.
  • Roll the edge of the glass in celery salt. Add ice.
  • Squeeze your lemon and lime wedges into the glass.
  • Pour vodka and add the tomato juice, Tabasco sauce, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, black pepper, and a pinch of celery salt.
  • Strain the mixture into the glass that you prepared.
  • Garnish with a lemon wedge, a celery stick, 2 speared green olives, and a parsley sprig.

golf drinks whiskey sour

Ingredients: Bourbon, simple syrup, lemon juice, orange wheel, maraschino cherry

Whiskey sour belongs to the family of sours, and most golfers honor it as a classic cocktail. It first appeared in a recipe book called Jerry Thomas’ The Bartender’s Guide in 1862.

Depending on the variation, whiskey sour tastes a bit like vanilla and caramel. Bartenders mix in an element of sour with a light squeeze of lemon juice. That sour flavor makes it good for those who wish to cover up the taste of alcohol.

Whiskey Sour r ecipe:

  • To begin, mix the ingredients: 2 oz of bourbon, ¾ oz of fresh lemon juice, ¾ oz of simple syrup.
  • Next, add the shaker with ice and shake the mixture. Shake it for approximately 20 seconds.
  • Finally, strain the cocktail through a Hawthorne into an old-fashioned rocks glass with ice.
  • Garnish it with an orange wheel and the maraschino cherry.

golf drinks classic screwdriver

Ingredients: Orange juice, vodka

You can get the screwdriver in many variations, but the most popular is orange juice and vodka — the classic screwdriver. This one tastes mostly like orange juice with a subtle hint of vodka. You can barely perceive the alcohol, but this bad boy will quickly take you to the land of inebriation. Take it easy with screwdrivers because you can drink too much without realizing it.

Classic screwdriver r ecipe:

  • Take 0.75 oz of vodka and mix it with 0.5 oz of orange juice.
  • Garnish with an orange slice and drink to a better round next time.

golf drinks jack and coke

Ingredients: Jack Daniels, Coca-Cola, lemon juice

If you’re going out for golf and drinks, check out this especially popular alcoholic beverage in the American South — Jack and Coke. If you’re ordering this out, you must remember two key things: highball and lowball cocktails. Highball means you get a higher percentage of mixer or cola in the drink over alcohol.

Lowball means you’re going to feel good for a while after this. Jack and Coke is usually a highball cocktail with the perfect mix at 7% ABV. Some golfers balance the flavors out with a squeeze of lemon juice. I’d recommend it.

Prep time: 2 minutes

Jack and Coke r ecipe:

  • Put the ice cubes into the highball cocktail glass
  • Pour 2 oz of Jack Daniels and 4 oz of Coca-Cola into the glass
  • Squeeze in a lemon to balance the flavors

Ingredients: Lemon juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, and vodka

The Azalea has earned the title of the unofficial cocktail at the Masters, and it remains one of the top golf drinks. In fact, this golf cocktail is named Azalea after the pink flowers that bloom at the Augusta National Golf Club every April. It’s also named after the 13th hole of this same course. This light cocktail has a sweet and fruity flavor. The bright notes of tart citrus add another dimension.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Azalea r ecipe:

  • Mix in 1 oz lemon juice, 2 oz pineapple juice, 1 splash of grenadine, and 2 oz vodka
  • Garnish it with a lemon slice.
  • Refrigerate the mixture for 30 minutes and serve cool.

golf drinks glenmorangie

Ingredients: Glenmorangie Original, fresh lemon, chamomile honey, pink grapefruit, Manzanilla sherry

Also known as single malt whiskey, William and Ann Matheson, farmers in the Scottish Highlands, invented Glenmorangie in 1843 when they founded the Glenmorangie Distillery.

Glenmorangie sponsored the Open Golf Championship in 2015. They created two golf course drinks to enjoy on the 19th hole. One they call the Scottish links, and the other they call tee-off. Below you’ll find recipes for both

Prep time: 4 to 5 minutes

Glenmorangie Scottish links recipe:

  • Mix in 50 ml of Glenmorangie Original, 10ml of Manzanilla sherry, 15ml of pink grapefruit, 20ml of chamomile honey, 15ml of fresh lemon
  • Shake and strain the mixture
  • Add ice to your prepared rocks glass
  • Top it with soda
  • Garnish it with a pink grapefruit.

Glenmorangie tee-off recipe:

  • Pour 50 ml of Glenmorangie Original, 15 ml of simple syrup, 20 ml of fresh lemon juice, and 50 ml of Cold Earl Grey tea. Shake in all the ingredients except the bitter lemon.
  • Strain it into a highball cocktail glass
  • Top it with the fever tree bitter lemon.
  • Garnish it with an orange twist.

golf drinks corona

Let’s face it, cocktails aren’t for everyone. Some people wouldn’t be caught dead sipping one! For those folks, Corona makes an excellent choice for the golf course.

This lager never fails to hit the spot for me, and it’s certainly cheaper than sourcing ingredients to make your own cocktail. What’s more, you don’t have to go through the effort of making it, it’s already been done for you!

golf drinks coca cola

Coca-Cola is not only the most popular soft drink in the USA but also holds this title worldwide. Therefore, if you’d rather ditch alcohol and keep a clear head, Coca-Cola is perhaps the best drink for the job.

Like with Corona Light, you purchase the drink pre-made, which is far more convenient than having to make it yourself, like for cocktails. Simply throw a can or two in your golf bag, and you’re good to go!

Frequently Asked Questions

Orange juice, lemonade, or even water is a great choice to stay hydrated while out on the golf course. Keep them chilled in a cool box for maximum enjoyment.

Bourbon is the most common liquor that you will find on any golf course, but you can find plenty of other alcoholic drinks there. We recommend taking along whatever alcohol you enjoy the most. Just remember to drink responsibly so that you don't ruin your round.

You might choose the Arnold Palmer for a non-alcoholic drink, which is iced tea and lemonade. For those who want a little more kick, you’d choose the John Daly which has mostly vodka, lemonade, and iced tea.

If you’re looking for a golfer drink, try out one of the ones mentioned above, they’re far more interesting than just drinking water while you’re out on the course.

Hopefully, you saw one or two golf cocktails on this list that you’d like to try out. I’m a big fan of Jack and Coke in particular. It’s simple to make and one of the best tasting in my opinion. I strongly encourage you to give at least one of these golf drinks ago. Who knows? It could end up being your favorite drink!

Hopefully if you are reading this, you are a golfer who takes an interest in your nutrition before, during, but importantly after a round too.

This becomes particularly important if you are playing in a competition and have to play again tomorrow morning.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst things on a golf club menu...

Best And Worst Things On A Golf Club Menu - Best options:

Club Sandwich

tour golf eat drink

Oh yes, the classic club sandwich – found almost anywhere in Europe!

A good club sandwich will have the option or white or brown bread.

I personally would go for the brown option to ensure a slower release of carbohydrates, rather than white bread.

A chicken breast or sliced chicken is a fundamental part of a good club sandwich, a quality source of protein to help muscles recover.

Lettuce and tomatoes also make an appearance to give you a few vitamins and minerals.

Most places should also include bacon.

If you can, ask for the fat to be cut off the bacon or do it when you get the sandwich. Again, another source of protein.

To keep this healthy, ask for the sauce not to be added and instead add in some salt and pepper yourself once you have it at the table.

The salt will help with replacing any salt loss during the round.

Chicken Wings

Can turn messy, but what you will get here is a very high intake of protein, normally as a side dish.

Again, this will help with muscle repair and recovery.

Glass of milk

If you have read my other articles on golfmonthly.com, then you will begin to see milk makes an appearance most of the time.

A great source of protein, carbohydrates and also calcium.

Remember also that milk is a brilliant re-hydrator and has been shown to be as good as some oral rehydration solutions that are on the market.

Also, milk contains both whey and casein protein.

Casein is the protein that is slowly released into the muscles, so if you have a round again tomorrow this should be a non-negotiable to support recovery as you sleep!

Bonus points for having another glass of milk 30 minute prior to bed!

Steak, new potatoes and a side of greens

Not all clubhouses will have this option, but if your local does then again, a massive serving of protein included with a steak.

The reason I have gone for new potatoes instead of chips is to eliminate the fatty oils that chips are cooked in.

Boiled potatoes will be a much better option for carbohydrates to get the glycogen back into the muscles.

Half-naked chicken burger

If you are feeling a little naughty, then try a chicken burger but with only one half of the bun, again ask for sauce on the side so you can add this to the quantity you want.

Advice here is to ensure you ask for half the bun when you order, otherwise when it arrives as a full burger, the temptation to just eat all of it will be there, whereas if only half the bun leaves the kitchen, the craving is taken away and out of your control!

A last-minute entry here is a chicken and beef fajita mix.

Normally a good serving of meat with roasted veggies allows you to create a tasteful dish and one you can regulate your serving of carbohydrates by how many wraps you make.

The mix of chicken and beef will also provide a great source of protein for you.

Best And Worst Things On A Golf Club Menu - Worst Options:

Sausage baguette/bap

Best And Worst Things On A Golf Club Menu

I’m happy to be proven wrong on this one, but the majority of sausage meat at golf clubs will likely be poor quality.

Unless this is a high-quality sausage with a high percentage of meat, it is not going to do you any favours with supporting muscle repair and recovery after a round.

Additionally, the majority of clubhouses will only stock white baguettes and not have any brown baguettes.

Ham egg and chips

Although the eggs are class in this dish, similar to the sausages, the ham quality and clubhouses can be questioned.

In my few years playing as an amateur golfer, I have seen a few of these meals served up and been amazed as what I have seen.

Although you could argue the chips are a source of carbohydrates (which they are) normally these are deep fat fried.

Again, not what we want to support recovery.

Pie and mash

Although I do enjoy a pie and mash, they are normally very calorie dense and high in fat.

Similar to the above, I have tasted some dreadful pies the last few years and have decided to stay away from them now.

Apart from the odd chunk of meat, they don’t really pack any other goodness in the post-round meal.

My choices:

It goes without saying that the first thing to put into the body should be a pint of water.

Tick that box first to ensure you rehydrate and then enjoy your post-round meal.

Once the clubs are open again, my go to will be the following:

Pint of water Half-naked chicken burger with side of greens and boiled potatoes Glass of milk

Subscriber only, restaurants, food and drink | virginia beach offers new spot to watch the masters tournament, eat great food and play golf.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Golf fans don’t have to travel far to enjoy the Masters Tournament, which starts Thursday in Augusta, Georgia.

Hackers at Hilltop, a sports bar with golf simulators, will tee up the tourney on multiple television screens — there are more than 70 in the place.

Executive chef Ryan Montgomery plans to put his spin on traditional Masters fare which includes sandwiches of pimento cheese, egg salad and pork barbecue. He’s still tweaking the menu.

Guests are in for a treat, however, if it’s anything like the regular offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hackers serves golf-themed entrees ranging from omelets to burgers and sandwiches to tapas. Some of its cool items include a Rise N’ Shine (sourdough bread topped with smoked salmon) to 5 Wood Nachos topped with brisket, to Flop Shot tapas (grilled octopus, chorizo grits, roasted red bell pepper coulis).

But customers don’t have to follow golf or know how to play to experience the food and entertainment at Hackers, which opened in November. Korey Johnson, the general manager, recently gave me a tour and I sampled some of its food. I’m hooked.

The main room had a bar, tables and booths. A row of golf simulator bays (rooms) were off to the right and we entered one of seven. The space had a green carpet, clubs off to the side, a large screen and seating. A maximum of eight people can experience 18 holes of golf on 77 courses such as Pebble Beach. A server is assigned to each room and guests can watch any sport.

We passed the VIP golf bay which holds up to 25 people, and entered the cigar lounge. The smell of smoke lingered among the leather sofas and chairs. The room was cozy. The fully stocked humidor in the corner caught my eye. Nice, I thought to myself.

We ended in the sunroom with several TVs and better ventilation. Daylight came through the windows on this rainy Wednesday with a view of most of the parking lot. I could see golfers carrying their equipment into the restaurant.

The food was cold by the time I sat down to eat. I dug in anyway. The blueberry cobbler-style pancakes were the size of a dinner plate. They still were fluffy and flavorful. The blueberry compote’s bitter notes complemented the sweet cinnamon streusel. Scrumptious.

The Captain's Choice featuring seared scallops, sundried tomato, parmesan risotto and grilled asparagus is photographed at Hackers at Hilltop in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. (Kendall Warner / The Virginian-Pilot)

The Captain’s Choice included seared scallops and parmesan risotto that would have made renowned chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsay proud. They were cooked to, what I believe, is perfection. The creamy sundried tomato concoction near the risotto was appealing and probably a garnish. I called it the star. I couldn’t get enough.

I paced myself and then went for the 7 Iron, the garlic parmesan buffalo-style wings. After one bite, I contemplated coming back later in the week. Not too saucy. Not cooked too hard. Not too spicy. Just right.

The Ty Webb burger featuring a beef patty, pork belly, buffalo onion strings, pickled jalapeño, with Monterey Jack cheese on brioche bun is photographed at Hackers at Hilltop in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. (Kendall Warner / The Virginian-Pilot)

I started to fade but I pushed through. I liked the crispy buffalo onion strings on the Ty Webb burger and the delicate heat from the pickled jalapeno. The pork belly gave it a little fattiness that I loved. I consumed the parmesan truffle fries cold and they still held their greatness.

I picked up a slice of the Double Eagle, a barbecue chicken pizza. The house-made dough tasted fresh while the smoked gouda delivered the flavor to make it a hit. I can’t wait to try it hot on my next visit.

I concluded my meal with a few sips of a spicy margarita and left happy as a jaybird-ie.

10 experiential bars and restaurants around Boston to grab a bite and get your game on

A nyone who’s ordered nachos at a bowling alley or sipped on a brew at a pool hall (or Dave & Buster’s) knows that mixing games with a good menu is a recipe for success. But in the age of Fortnite and TikTok, bars and restaurants have started to level up their experiential offerings, upgrading classics while embracing new trends and technology.

Beyond the fancy 4K monitors, some places prefer to tap into Gen X nostalgia for joysticks and old-school arcade games, while others are getting people in the door by promising workouts to go along with appetizers and cocktails. From table tennis to pickleball, breaking a sweat is a new aperitif for date-night fun.

Here are 10 experiential bars and restaurants in and around Boston where you can grab a bite while getting your game on.

F1 Arcade opens in the Seaport this spring.

Set to open in the Seaport later this month , this newcomer to the Boston scene promises to put Formula One racing fans in the driver’s seat with a next-level gaming experience. F1 Arcade’s first US location features 69 full-motion racing simulators that will have people feeling fast and furious without having to buckle up and hit the track. The venue also boasts a 37-foot-long bar offering beer, wine, and cocktails. Visitors can also stay fueled up with menu offerings like shareable Wagyu steak sliders, mini tacos, and more. 87 Pier 4 Blvd., f1arcade.com/us . — Matt Juul

Five Iron Golf

Golf enthusiasts can hit the green year-round at Five Iron Golf in Government Center. The venue features a collection of golf simulators that can accommodate up to five guests and use Trackman technology and high-speed cameras to put patrons’ swings to the virtual test. Open to all skill levels, visitors can keep it casual or, for the serious golfers, take things to the next level with challenging digital courses that will have you feeling like a pro on the PGA Tour. Five Iron Golf also offers coaching and lessons to help golfers with their game. After you’ve played a few rounds, fuel up with restaurant and bar offerings like smash burger sliders, flatbread pizzas, wings, plus cocktails, draft beers, and other libations. 1 Washington Mall, fiveirongolf.com/boston-government-center . — M.J.

Flight Club Boston

Darts have been a staple of dive bars and pubs for centuries, but at Flight Club Boston, the Seaport hot spot gives the classic game an update. Offering what it calls “social darts,” groups of up to 12 people can hit the oche (the space from the throwing line to the dart board) for multiplayer games that use technology to speed things up and keep the fun going. The oche also includes a dedicated seating area where patrons can lounge in between turns and feast on shareable bites like lobster elote dip, pork belly bao buns, and mini tacos while sipping a variety of beers, wines, and cocktails. 60 Seaport Blvd., Suite 215, flightclubdartsusa.com/boston/seaport . — M.J.

Touted as a “premium pickleball parlor,” PKL in Southie is a massive complex that mixes the trendy game with food and drink offerings. Visitors can break a sweat by reserving time on the pickleball court, or take it easy with other games, including shuffleboard and cornhole. Serious pickleballers of all skill levels can sign up for leagues to take the competition up a notch. PKL’s restaurant has a $25 bottomless brunch on Saturdays and Sundays to keep players fueled, plus a dinner menu and cocktail list featuring celebrity-themed libations like the Harry Styles, a vodka drink with strawberry, lemongrass, and yuzu. 64C St., playpkl.com . — M.J.

PLAY Boston

Celtics and Bruins games aren’t the only reasons to spend nights hanging out at TD Garden. Located on the second floor of the complex just outside the arena’s main entrance, PLAY Boston is a family-friendly “barcade” packed with new games and modern takes on classic arcade fare, like pop-a-shot and plinko. The venue also features a menu of global offerings and a full bar, perfect for grabbing a bite while watching crowds file into the arena. 110 Causeway St., playboston.com . — Henry Bova

A view of the games at Puttshack Boston.

For those who want a high-energy night out, Puttshack in the Seaport may be the place for you. The lively playhouse offers an array of food and drink options, plus two floors of mini-golf. Puttshack has state-of-the-art, brashly-designed courses (as any good mini-golf place should) and a completely digital, automatic scorekeeping system, so players can keep their hands free and focus on victory. Patrons can dine from a diverse food menu and grab drinks at either of the establishment’s two bars. A new Puttshack also recently opened at the Natick Mall. 58 Pier 4 Blvd.; 1245 Worcester St., Natick, puttshack.com . — H.B.

Roxy’s Arcade

From the outside, Roxy’s Arcade in Cambridge looks like any normal fast-food restaurant: Counter service ringing up grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, and fried chicken with a line of customers lingering by the handful of arcade machines. But a bouncer at a hostess stand in front of what looks like a walk-in freezer door signals that there’s more to discover. When you enter the “walk-in,” what awaits isn’t frozen food, but a much larger speakeasy-style arcade filled with old-school machines, first-person driving simulators, a basketball hoop shoot, two full bars, and a handful of tables. A token machine gives patrons chances to try their hand at “Stranger Things” and “Jurassic Park”-themed games as nostalgia and arcade noise fill the venue. 292 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, roxysarcade.com . — Adri Pray

It’s easy to mistake SPIN in the Seaport for your friend’s garage or basement — in fact, that’s exactly what they’re going for. This massive venue features several Ping-Pong tables, two full bars, a kitchen, a private event space, tabletop board games, seating, a photo booth, merch stations, and its signature bathtub filled with Ping-Pong balls that customers are welcome to pose for photos in. Ping-Pong tables can be reserved hourly, for $39 Mondays through Thursdays and $49 Fridays and Saturdays. SPIN is also offering a $9 after 9 p.m. special, where interested parties can reserve a table for $9 from 9 p.m. till 11 p.m. on Tuesdays. Enjoy signature SPIN cocktails prepared in front of you, like the Marty Reisman, made with mescal, tequila, pineapple, lime, Cosa Nostra shrub, and rimmed with lava salt, or a Killin’ The Ducks, their house-made espresso martini. 30 Melcher St., wearespin.com/location/boston. — A.P.

Part live music venue, part bowling alley bar and restaurant, Urban Wild in Charlestown fuses a few experiential concepts for a unique offering fit for the nightlife crowd. Guests can reserve time to bowl on the lanes or swing by to enjoy an evening of music, with themed nights like country Thursdays. Hungry patrons can expect to feast on pizzas, pretzels, burgers, and more, while the drink menu offers a variety of beers, wines, and craft cocktails. Groups of four to six can get a little wild with shareable “coolers,” large format cocktails with whimsical names like Down the Rabbit Hole, a tiki-style drink made with rum, tropical Kool-Aid, citrus soda, plus orange, pineapple, and cranberry juices. 100-D Hood Park Drive, Charlestown, urbanwildboston.com . — M.J.

There’s something for gamers of every generation at Versus in Downtown Crossing. Big Night Entertainment Group’s arcade bar concept features both retro and modern elements, with a ton of ‘80s pop influence that will have Gen X visitors longing for the days of burning through quarters at the mall. In addition to offerings for pinball wizards and skeeball champs, fans of old-school games can enjoy classics like Galaga and Pac-Man while next-gen gamers can face off on Playstation 5 and Nintendo Switch consoles. Meanwhile, the food and drink menu features gaming-inspired fare like Zelda fries and shareable cocktails served in Super Mario Bros.-style question blocks. 42 Province St., versusboston.com . — M.J.

Biscuit To Baskets

Keith Lee just left Toronto to go to Ajax for second stop on food tour

Latest Videos

Toronto is obsessively tracking TikTok food critic Keith Lee to see what restaurant he'll go to next. Lee showed up in Scarborough on Friday to try three shawarmas at Sumac Iraqi Charcoal Grill .

All bets were that his next stop might be closer to the downtown core based on his Instagram story that hinted that a visit to Rasta Pasta in Kensington Market could be his second stop.

Surprise! Instead, it turns out Lee decided to head east, so far east that he drove past the city's boundaries and ended up in Ajax.

The beneficiary of his adventures was Biscuit To Baskets, a bakery, cafe and chocolate shop that's hidden on a residential street behind someone's house in what is essentially their garage.

In the video posted to his TikTok, Lee seemed to be thrilled that the shop was "in somebody's backyard" and his visit there was "the most Canadian thing he's ever done."

@keith_lee125 Biscuits & Baskets taste test 💕 would you try it 💕 #foodcritic @mixinthe6ix ♬ original sound - Keith Lee

Lee made sure to shout out mixinthe6ix , the account he credited with helping him discovering the place.

So what did Lee get for this $36.16?

Among the items he showed in his video were a Korean sponge toffee latte (he called it "unique" and "real good"), a carrot cake with cream cheese icing as well as banana, chocolate and biscoff cakes.

Milder bryson dechambeau takes first-round masters lead.

Jim Souhan

AUGUSTA, GA. – Bryson DeChambeau always wanted to be different. Thursday, he differentiated himself from the rest of the Masters field.

His 65 made him the fourth player ever to register more than one 66 or better in a Masters first round, along with Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka. He took a one-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler at the end of a day that was delayed by rain and buffeted by winds before play was suspended.

Masters leaderboard

Early in his career, he wore a flat driver's cap reminiscent of the one Ben Hogan wore.

He was a math prodigy who studied physics at Southern Methodist, and he obsessed over the science of golf.

He played irons with the same length shaft, a dramatic departure from golf tradition.

Desperate to break through on the PGA Tour, he added muscle and bulk with an outrageous diet and a strenuous workout program, and began training to achieve unprecedented swing speeds.

He used his power to win the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2020, mashing long drives and muscling the ball out of deep rough to prove that his unorthodoxy worked.

He displayed ego and arrogance to his own detriment, saying before the 2020 Masters was held in November because of COVID that he considered the par-72 Augusta National Golf Course a "par 67″ because of his power. He finished tied for 34th.

He left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf, and now he delights in "promoting the game" via social media posts.

Thursday, DeChambeau, with new irons he helped design and an adjusted swing, made Augusta National look like a pitch-and-putt, hitting 15 greens in regulation.

So which phase of DeChambeau are we seeing? The traditionalist or innovator, the mad scientist or blooming artist, the gym rat or YouTube star?

"The golf phase," he said. "I'd say the golf phase for sure. Trying to be the best golfer I can be."

During a lengthy session in the interview room, DeChambeau sounded humbler than his previous personas, repeatedly saying he respects others' opinions even when they disagree with his idiosyncratic approach. He even said that his "par 67″ comment was a mistake.

"I mean, yeah, sure," he said. "Again, the comment was definitely misinterpreted. I said it, and I respect people's opinions on it.

"For me, I have a level of respect for this golf course that's a little bit different than a couple years ago, and clearly today was a great test of golf, and I was able to conquer a very difficult golf course today.

"Regarding the 67 comment, you know, you mess up. I'm not a perfect person. Everybody messes up. You learn from your mistakes, and that was definitely one."

DeChambeau leads by one stroke over Scheffler, his antithesis. Scheffler has kept the same, unconventional, swing throughout his life, relying on feel and flow rather than bulk and science.

Scheffler has resided at the top of the golf world without offending anyone at any time over any subject, and by remaining with the PGA Tour.

DeChambeau's love of social media? Scheffler doesn't even participate, intentionally ignoring the outside world once he leaves the golf course so he can maintain a sense of normalcy.

On ESPN, Scheffler was asked how many texts he receives after a round.

"I wasn't checking texts," Scheffler said. "I was checking scores."

Where was he headed? "I'm going to go home now and get some rest and try to get ready for the next day."

Rory McIlroy played alongside Scheffler on Thursday. "It doesn't look like he's 6 under par, and then at the end of the day, it's 6 under par," McIlroy said. ``He's just so efficient with everything."

Earlier, DeChambeau, after his best round at the Masters, bragged, "It's really awesome to see how I can affect a lot of people … junior golfers, middle-aged men even, they are coming out shouting, 'Thanks for the content. Appreciate what you do online.'"

Sure, that happened. It's a Masters tradition unlike any other — patrons yelling at golfers about online content.
