Five Boro Bike Tour Is Back in NYC — Which Means Big Street Closures Sunday
Published may 1, 2022 • updated on may 1, 2022 at 9:52 am.
Sunday marks the comeback of the Five Boro Bike Tour, returning for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered many citywide events.
As many as 32,000 riders were projected to pedal the 40 miles of car-free streets across New York City, and riding the pavement in every borough.
The massive cycling event also means significant road closures throughout the city starting early Sunday morning, including the lower part of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Such a critical mass of bicycles requires an vast number of street closures and transit changes. After all, the tour promises riders an unparalleled view of New York City unencumbered by motor vehicles.
“For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience NYC,” the event’s official website states.
More information about the race can be found on its official website .
Here’s what New Yorkers, whether pedaling or not, need to know.
Public Transit
A clear message to Bike Tour cyclists has come from MTA’s leadership: mass transit is the easiest and most sustainable way to the tour.
“Customers who want to take their bike onto the subway need to tap their OMNY-enabled device or swipe their MetroCard while the station agent watches, rotate the turnstile, then enter through the station service gates once they are activated by the agent,” an MTA release states. “For safety’s sake, customers should carry, not roll, bikes down stairs."
Riders who want to take their bikes to the tour’s start near Battery Park are encouraged to use these stations:
- Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, 4/5/6
- Bowling Green (Bowling Green Park entrance only), 4/5
- Chambers Street, 2/3
- Chambers Street, J
- Chambers Street, A/C
- World Trade Center, E
- Cortlandt Street, R
MTA officials ask cyclists not use the following stations, which are not well-equipped to handle large volumes of bicycles:
- Fulton Street, 2/3/4/5/A/C
- Wall Street, 2/3
- Wall Street, 4/5
- Park Place, 2/3
- Rector Street, R
- Whitehall Street, R
Passengers can click here and check “Current Service Status” for bus routes affected by street closures.
Metro-North and LIRR trains will suspend limits on bicycles and recommend that cyclists use a bungee cord to secure their bike while on the train.
Bridge Closures
The Verrazzano-Narrow Bridge’s lower level headed into Staten Island will be closed until 7 p.m., as will the BQE’s westbound approach to the bridge, MTA officials said.
Other Verrazzano lane closures are, as detailed by the MTA:
- One lower level Brooklyn-bound lane from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

- The Lily Pond Avenue exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

32,000 cyclists ride across the city in Five Boro Bike Tour
The Five Boro Tour has returned with thousands taking to New York City streets for a 40-mile trip through all the boroughs .
This is the first year since the start of the pandemic that the tour is back to its full capacity of 32,000 riders. In 2020, the race was cancelled and in 2021, it was held with limited capacity to allow for social distancing.
“I’m feeling blessed. Grateful for a beautiful day. So excited to be here with 30 thousand-plus people who want to ride their bikes on the streets of New York without vehicles. It’s amazing,” said Janet Wilson, who participated in the tour for the first time.
The tour is a fundraising event for nonprofit Bike New York to provide free bike education opportunities to New Yorkers. Organizers say the best part of the race is the participants.
“First of all, we have people from every state in the country, 32 countries around the world,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “What’s so great about it is not that it’s largest bike event in the country. It’s the most diverse and inclusive ride in the world. Look around. This is what makes it great. It’s a microcosm of the world. This is New York City. “
Riders who have taken part multiple times say experiencing the city through the tour is something unmatched.
“I did the tour ten years ago. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done,” says Kelly Santella. “You can’t see New York City in any other way. When you’re in a cab or walking but with the streets closed, it feels really safe. It’s just phenomenal.”

Five Boro Bike Tour History
The event began on June 10, 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge with about 250 participants. The original tour was 50 miles long and started and ended in Queens. What started as a one-time event became a tradition the next year when the New York City Mayor Ed Koch embraced the idea of a city-wide bike tour. The distance was shortened and the word “challenge” was changed to “tour” to make the event more appealing to the general public. That year, the number of participants increased tenfold to around 3000. via wikipedia

TD Five Boro Bike Tour: Where to watch it in Brooklyn
Ride returns with 32,000 cyclists, april 29, 2022 mary frost.
Brooklyn’s streets will be filled with thousands of bicyclists this Sunday as the world’s most popular bike ride, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is back at full strength. Delayed and limited to 20,000 participants last year due to COVID-19, this year the sold-out event includes more than 32,000 cyclists, who will bike 40 miles across all five boroughs.
The event begins in Lower Manhattan, swings through the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, and winds up in Staten Island. The Brooklyn leg passes through multiple neighborhoods from Greenpoint through Williamsburg and DUMBO and along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) to Bay Ridge, with plenty of great viewing areas along the way. (See map below.) Best of all for bikers, the entire route is car-free.
There are multiple rest areas with snacks and repair stations set up along the route. There are also several departure spots for those who only want to bike part of the route (such as families with children), including one at mile 27 near the Brooklyn Bridge.

This year, there’s a new twist: Since NYC traffic law has changed, bikers may now use a pedal-assist e-bike.
Mayor Eric Adams, known to be a bike enthusiast, touted the event. “Cycling is a great way to get around, stay healthy, and take care of our environment, and I’m so excited the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is getting back to full strength,” he said.
“We’re back and better than ever,” said Ken Podziba, CEO and President of the nonprofit Bike New York, which sponsors the tour along with the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT). “And knowing the proceeds from the Tour fund Bike New York’s free bike education and safety programs makes it even more meaningful.”
Proceeds from the event fund free public bike education programs for more than 30,000 adults and kids, along with projects like Recycle-A-Bicycle and charities such as One Community, which prepares formerly incarcerated New Yorkers for union jobs repairing Citi Bikes.
The tour kicks off with the first wave of riders leaving at 7:30 a.m., rain or shine. The sixth and final wave takes off at 10:25 a.m. It ends with a Finish Festival at Empire Outlets on Staten Island’s North Shore, next to the Staten Island Ferry. Medals will be handed out to all finishers. Even if you don’t ride, you can attend the after-party.
Major street closures are scheduled to include the FDR Drive, BQE/Gowanus Expressway, as well as the Ed Koch-Queensboro and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridges. (DOT strongly advises motorists to take mass transit or to seek alternative routes farther from the ride route.)

Brooklyn Boro
New York City’s most populous borough, Brooklyn, is home to nearly 2.6 million residents. If Brooklyn were an independent city it would be the fourth largest city in the United States. While Brooklyn has become the epitome of ‘cool and hip’ in recent years, for those that were born here, raised families here and improved communities over the years, Brooklyn has never been ‘uncool’.
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and brooklyneagle.com cover Brooklyn 24/7 online and five days a week in print with the motto, “All Brooklyn All the Time.” With a history dating back to 1841, the Eagle is New York City’s only daily devoted exclusively to Brooklyn.
