The Travel Oracle

How to Play Travel Bingo

Ah the weather! One minute it’s 80. The next minute, it’s 30. And you’re stuck in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Airport because New York City was having a tornado…or two. Yeah, yeah, I AM all about the environment and how horrible climate change is. But I’ll be honest, Harrisburg is no NYC, even if they have a Subway restaurant. And it’s easy to get B-O-R-E-D just waiting around when your flight is delayed. So let us share with you a fun game you can employ when you travel. This week we’ll show you how to play travel bingo. This week…it’s the “Bad Traveler” edition.

The Overall Rules of the Game

Just like in regular bingo , the first person to 5 wins. You can keep track of your progress on just one hand. All you need is to be is quick, observant and louder that your fellow contestants. The prize…well, I think it makes even going to the airport an extra fun part of the journey.

Round 1 – Bad Travelers at the Airport

The not-so-fun family.

You’ll most likely meet this crew as soon as you enter the airport.

  • The father – wrangling at least 8 pieces of luggage and some sort of awkward baby gear, like a car seat or travel play pen
  • The mother – already disheveled after getting her brood road ready, with a sleeping infant swaddled against her body, holding the hand of a toddler in full melt down
  • Infant – completely oblivious to all the money and effort her parents expended to make this “special” memory
  • Toddler – in full melt down because he wanted to wear his red shoes, not his blue ones
  • Next oldest sibling – dutifully pulling her own suit case while trying not to get lost in the crowd

And that, my dear readers, is what you call a “Not-so-Fun Family” road block. Good luck juking them to get to the self tagging bag kiosk.

Playing airport bingo to pass the time. Image of a man holding car seat, while pushing an over full luggage cart

The Roaming Sleepover

You will meet the Roaming Sleepover as you make your way to the CNN shop to grab a bottle of water. This pair of travelers sport pajamas, neck pillows, slippers and au-currant bed-head hair styles. They may be on a REALLY long leg of their flight. Or they may have arrived at the airport in that condition. You may never really know.

Woman yawning with messy hair

The Flatulent Fast Foodie

I’m not sure if you can call it “winning” when you run into this traveler on the airplane. As you’re making sure your seat is in the upright position, your nose tells you that something is wrong. Very wrong. As you look around, you see your seat mate brought an entire happy meal along for the ride. Not to disparage Mickey Dees – this meal might likely be from any number of the restaurants on site. You hope it doesn’t have too much garlic. But if it doesn’t then…what WAS that smell??

McDonalds French fries

The Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet

Now this traveler has never read ONE article about travel etiquette or what an absolutely TERRIBLE idea it is to remove your shoes on a flight. Not only may you offend your seat mate, due to the altitude and pressure, your feet may swell up and your shoes may have to be carried to your next destination.

The Crouching Carousel Crowder

Finally, as your heading down to get your bags, you’ll spot this crazy crowder standing right next to the conveyor belt, attempting to get their bag before anyone has a chance to steal it and run away! If you’re anything like me, and believe in leaving space, know this traveler will stand in the 12 inch gap between you and the machinery. If they get their bag first, they will feel like they’ve won. And of course, since LaGuardia only has the ONE taxi…they can lift their hands in victory. (In case you’re humor impaired, that was sarcasm!)

We hope you enjoyed learning how to play bingo to pass the time. Let us know if you “win” the “Bad Traveler edition: on your next adventure or if you have 5 more suggestions for the next round. More about this bingo card

Buckle up and prepare for takeoff with Flight Bingo, a game that turns the quirks and quips of air travel into a hilarious journey. Whether you're a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, this game promises to add an extra layer of fun to your flight experience. Let's transform those common airplane occurrences into a game of observant entertainment!

How to play Flight bingo

  • Design Your Deck : Select from a range of hilarious and relatable airplane scenarios. Think beyond the basics - include events like a baby's first flight giggle or someone dozing off and missing the snack cart.
  • Personalize Your Experience : Tailor your cards to reflect the type of flight you're on - short domestic hops might have different quirks compared to long-haul international journeys.

The art of the bingo card

  • Visual Appeal : Use Bingo Card Creator to add fun graphics or airplane-themed backgrounds to your cards.
  • Print or Digital : Choose to print your cards for a tangible game piece or keep them digital for convenience and eco-friendliness.

Observation on-board

  • Engage Your Senses : Listen for quirky announcements, watch for humorous or unusual passenger behavior, and even pay attention to those unique flight attendant quirks.
  • Broaden Your Scope : Don't just focus on the negatives. Celebrate the small joys of flying, like a smooth takeoff or a perfectly timed beverage service.

A Game of patience and timing

  • Long Haul Entertainment : For longer flights, your bingo card can become a story of your journey, capturing the unique narrative of your airborne adventure.

Bingo in the air

  • Subtle Triumphs : Remember, the goal is to have fun without disrupting others. A quiet self-congratulation or a shared smile with a neighbor marks your victory.
  • Memory Making : Each 'Bingo!' can be a memorable moment of your journey, turning the mundane into the extraordinary.

Self-entertainment

  • Engage with the Journey : Use Flight Bingo as a way to turn observation into a game, making the hours fly by (pun intended).
  • Reflect and Enjoy : Use your bingo card to reflect on the journey, making note of unique or funny occurrences.

Mile-high goals

  • Set Achievable Targets : Maybe it's completing a card, or perhaps it's spotting something specific like a passenger with a unique travel pillow.
  • Reward Yourself : Decide on a treat for yourself upon completion, like a favorite snack or movie on the flight.

Keep kids engaged

  • Learning Opportunity : Use the game to teach kids about flying, pointing out different aspects of air travel.
  • Creative Additions : Let kids draw or write about the scenarios they observe, turning the game into a creative diary of their flight experience.

Friendly competition

  • Teamwork or Rivalry : Decide whether to work as a team to fill a card or compete against each other for the win.
  • Prizes and Rewards : Set up small rewards for winners, like choosing the next family movie or getting an extra dessert.

Enhancing your flight bingo experience

plane wing through glass window

Bingo card customization

  • Themed cards : Customize your cards with specific flight scenarios or airline quirks.
  • Digital access : Use Bingo Card Creator to easily create and access your cards on mobile devices.

Making connections

  • Socialize : Share the game with fellow passengers to break the ice and make new friends.
  • Share stories : Use the game as a conversation starter to share funny travel experiences.

Beyond the plane

  • Airport edition : Extend the game to include common airport scenarios, like finding an empty charging station or hearing a last-minute gate change.

Benefits of using Bingo Card Creator

  • Adaptable play : Tailor your game for solo play, family fun, or social interaction.
  • Portable and accessible : Easily create and carry digital bingo cards on your mobile devices.
  • Universal appeal : Fun for travelers of all ages and experiences.

To avoid disturbing other passengers, consider using subtle signals like a gentle tap or a quiet word to mark your bingo wins. It's all about having fun without impacting the comfort of fellow flyers.

If you complete a certain pattern on your card, such as a horizontal or an X-shape pattern, you win by calling BINGO!

Standard Bingo games usually consist of somewhere between 10-15 rounds. The amount of cards you purchase with your credits will determine the amount of cards you will receive for each round and how many winners each round will therefore contain.

A standard Bingo round utilizes the numbers 1 through 75, with different numbers correlating to each letter (B-I-N-G-O). The amount of numbers called in each bingo game depends on a variety of factors and varies from game to game. These factors include the number of players in each round, the total amount of cards played, and how fast players call Bingo.

Bingo Blitz consists of the classic & beloved 75 Ball Bingo game, along with a variety of other awesome new ways to play! Our seasonal themed rooms are filled with great new takes on the traditional Bingo game.

Insider Today: 'Stopover' travel hack

Insider Today

Welcome back to our Saturday edition! Wait — don't put down that yummy dessert. One 38-year-old woman told Business Insider that instead of skipping treats, she lost 140 pounds in two years by eating more high-protein foods.

That's great news for foodies like myself. Keep reading for more good news to kick-start your weekend.

On the agenda:

"Stopover" programs let travelers explore between connecting flights .

What it's like to work with a life coach who charges $400 a month .

"Challengers" turned Zendaya and the cast into tennis stars .

Two lifestyle adjustments helped one woman lose 55 pounds .

But first: Power lunches are back, baby.

If this was forwarded to you, sign up here . Download Insider's app here.

This week's dispatch

Power hungry (literally).

It's no secret that many deals are made outside of the boardroom.

In 2013, Jeff Bezos famously secured The Washington Post for $250 million while traipsing around Hailey, Idaho during the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference. That's where billionaires and other business types strike deals while competing in tennis matches, going on guided hikes, and yes, eating lunch.

You don't have to be a billionaire to capitalize on a midday meeting, though. Enter: the power lunch. (Or should I say "remember the power lunch"?)

As the call to return to the office slowly drags on, many are taking advantage of what can happen over a nice meal.

One BI reporter went to Cecconi's in West Hollywood to find out why the Soho House-owned restaurant has been a mainstay for power-lunchers for 15 years. Her review is the first of many stories that will dig into some of the hottest power-lunch spots across the country.

Although she had a mixed review of the menu, what remains true is that productivity isn't just reserved for the office.

Score a "stopover" flight

Need a vacation within your vacation? Some travelers make it happen by booking long layovers. That gives them time to leave the airport and explore for a few hours — or days — before the next flight.

Known as "stopover" programs, airlines benefit from this hack, too. Plus, the layovers can sometimes come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

How to book the long layovers .

You'll soon be able to get an automatic refund when your flight is delayed or canceled

It's time to invest in yourself

BI's investing correspondent finally took the advice she's written so much about and invested in herself. She spends $400 a month on a life coach, a splurge she said is some of the best money she's ever spent.

She and her coach have met weekly for the past nine months. The coach has helped her write speeches, navigate cross-country moves, and held her accountable for the things she wants to accomplish.

What it's like to hire a life coach .

From movie star to tennis star

"Challengers," a steamy new drama that premiered Friday, stars 27-year-old Zendaya, who transformed into a tennis pro for the film.

Tennis coach Brad Gilbert served as a consultant on the film, training Zendaya and her costars. He told BI what the cast endured — from spending hours playing tennis to packing on muscle — to play the part.

Everything it takes to become an on-screen tennis pro .

Easy lifestyle changes for weight loss

Megan Tjelle, a 29-year-old from Chicago, was athletic as a kid, but became less active after starting nursing school. Throughout her 20s, she said, her weight increased and her confidence sank.

In 2022, she made two small changes: eating a balanced diet in a calorie deficit, and gradually moving more. Over six months, through diet and walking alone, Tjelle lost 55 pounds.

How small changes can have big results .

I hate cottage cheese but I tried stirring it into my meals for an extra dose of protein. I felt my gym performance improve.

What we're watching this weekend

"MILF Manor": The second season of the controversial show — wherein moms date each other's sons — is even messier than the first. It's streaming on Hulu.

"The Doomsday Cult of Antares de la Luz": Former members of a Chilean cult speak out about their experiences in the new Netflix series.

"We're Here": In this wholesome Max series, famous drag queens travel to small-town America where they give out makeovers.

See the full list .

Brewery Rowe: Travel writer explores ‘Beer Hiking’ in Southern California

Travel writer Johanna Flashman sampling some regional beers.

When a publisher suggested Johanna Flashman write a book on outdoor treks that lead to great refreshments, the veteran travel writer grabbed her pint glass and laced up her hiking boots.

“It wasn’t originally my idea,” Flashman said of “Beer Hiking Southern California,” which hit bookshelves on April 2 (Helvitiq, $27.95).

Working with the same publisher on another project, Flashman had been dreaming about “doing a kind of big tour of Southern California.”

When Helvitiq, a Swiss publishing house, proposed “Beer Hiking” in August 2022, Flashman wasted no time hitting the trails, the breweries and the keyboard.

“I started doing hikes in November 2022,” she said. “It was pretty fast turn-around — all the writing and research took about nine months.”

Flashman covered a vast amount of ground — and ecosystems.

“A lot of times when people think about Southern California, they think of the cities. But there is so much open space, as well,” she said.

“There are incredible mountains, Joshua trees, deserts, waterfall hikes, beach hikes and coastal bluffs. It’s very, very diverse.”

Travel writer Johanna Flashman sips a beer.

The resulting 288-page book — subtitled “The Tastiest Way to Discover SoCal’s Beaches, Mountains, and Deserts” — gives step-by-step directions to dozens of hikes, ranging from Powers Peak in Kern County to Volcan Mountain in Julian. Every outing is accompanied by trail notes, maps and a recommendation for post-hike hydration.

In the above examples, they are Lovely Raspberry Kettle Sour from Kern River Brewing and Elevation 5353 Cold IPA from Julian Beer.

“The beers were a lot of fun,” she said. “One of the things I wanted to focus on was to highlight breweries owned by people of color and those owned by women, because there aren’t as many as there should be.”

In San Diego County, her quest led to strolling through the Chicano Park Urban Art Walk; pausing for a Buenas Vibras Blonde Ale at Mujeres Brew House; scaling Valley Center’s Paradise Mountain and quaffing a Tropical Oasis Blonde Ale at Rincon Reservation Road Brewery; and exploring Jamul’s Mother Miguel Mountain before enjoying Can’t Touch This Imperial Red Ale at the Chula Vista Brewery.

Of the nine counties covered by “Beer Hiking,” only Los Angeles County, with its nine hikes, has more outings than San Diego County.

“I had eight breweries I could feature from San Diego County,” she said. “That’s not fair — there are so many good ones.”

Double play

Two reliable signs of spring: Padres baseball returns to Petco Park and so does Padres Beerfest .

This season’s pregame fests, featuring live music and $5 12-ounce pours, will be launched today before the home team’s contest against the Phillies.

The other dates:

June 7, before playing the Diamondbacks.

Aug. 2, prior to tangling with the Rockies.

Sept. 6, as the Giants comes to town.

Held on the grounds of the newly-redesigned Gallagher Square, Beerfest starts at 4:30 p.m. and ends shortly before the first pitch. The beer lineup is subject to change but, like our hometown team, usually includes a fair number of heavy hitters.

The next round

May 12: Treat Mom to brunch, Stone-style. The menu at the brewery/bistro’s Mother’s Day feast runs the gamut from barramundi to brisket, scrambled eggs to salmon. $67. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens,1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido. stonebrewing.com

May 16: Among the few U.S. breweries guided by a Black brewer is San Antonio’s Weathered Souls, led by Marcus Baskerville. You can meet him and sample some of his creations at North Park Beer’s collaboration beer dinner, with offers five courses and five beers. 6 p.m. North Park Beer, Banker’s Hill taproom, 3095 Fifth Ave., San Diego. bit.ly/3xGNPl6

Drink or dump: Drink. A creamy white head caps a brew the color of sun-bleached straw. Plenty of flavor for a low-alcohol, light-bodied beer, reminiscent of fresh Italian bread with a peppery snap at the finish.

Ayinger Maibock from Brauerei Aying in Aying Germany.

Ayinger Maibock

From: Brauerei Aying, Germany

ABV: 7 percent

Style: Maibock

Drink or dump: Drink. Pours a clear yellow, its sturdy eggshell head supported by a flotilla of pinprick bubbles. Bready malts predominate, with some honey, apple and a splash of bitters.

Silva Brewing's Hop Maniac India pale ale.

From: Silva Brewing, Paso Robles

ABV: 7.8 percent

Style: India Pale Ale

Drink or dump : Drink. Since 2017, former Green Flash brewer Chuck Silva has helmed his own Central California brewery. This IPA, featuring Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, is a sparkling example of his style: full-throated bitterness floating over a firm malt base, aggressive yet approachable.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
