Bishnoi Village – A Must Visit Place for Animal Lovers

bishnoi village safari timings

About Bishnoi Village

As we have previously established, Rajasthan is home to the best sightseeing spots. The blue city of Jodhpur offers just as much. One of the main tourist attractions in the city is the Bishnoi Village. Although 22kms from the city, the city houses a Hindu religious sect – the Bishnois. They get their name from Bishnoi, meaning 29, and representing the 29 principles the villagers live by. Out of these 29 principles, ten pertain to personal hygiene and good health, seven to healthy and communal social behaviour. Also four to being good devotees of God, and eight to the reservation and care towards the biosphere.

bishnoi village safari timings

These principles teach the sect to treat the nature that is housing them with utmost respect. These principles are followed by the villagers to the T, to the point they once sacrificed their lives to save trees in their village from being cut down.

Wildlife at Bishnoi Village

The bishnoi village area is replete with wildlife! During your time in the village, you can spot ptaridges, peacocks, the endangered Great Indian Bustard, vultures, blackbuck deers, chinkaras, and many more. Much like the minority Hindu sect, the wildlife has also found refuge in this village as the Bishnoi actively protect them from hunters and poachers for over five centuries.

bishnoi village safari timings

Some temples in the village also double up as veterinary clinics and rescue shelters. The temple priests take care of injured animals and feed them for days till the animals can get back up on their feet. The donations made to these temples are often used to fund these purposes. An interesting aspect of wild animals living in close proximity to humans, especially those that selflessly care for their wildlife, is that their behaviour has undergone some changes. They start believing that every human being is as compassionate as a Bishnoi. Unfortunately, this puts them at tremendous risk, especially with poachers.

If you are an animal lover just like Bishnois, Bishnoi village is the perfect place for you!

Bishnoi Village Safari

The main tourist attraction this small and loving village offers is a village safari. These safaris were started all the way back in time by the Maharajas of Jodhpur to make the village inviting to outsiders by giving a glimpse of the life of the villagers. Today, the safari can be taken in jeeps or on camel backs.

Your Bishnoi Village Itinerary:

Guda village and lake side:.

The walking paths around the Guda Lake and the smaller ponds around the Bishnoi Village area is where you would get the chance of spotting the varied wildlife like the black bucks, chinkaras, blue bulls, desert Fox, Indian Jackal, Migratory Birds, local bird species etc could be done. Lake Guda is an artificial lake, perfect as a picnic place. It is advisable you choose a guide, preferably a local, to accompany you that has a fair knowledge of the various sightings around the area. . The species of birds varies from summer to winter as they migrate nationally and internationally, but the lake remains a hosting ground throughout the year.

Bishnoi Village Community:

The Bishnois, as mentioned earlier, are an eco friendly community famous for their rich culture and are staunch worshippers of nature in all its forms specially the sanctity of plant and animal life. It is a Hindu religious sect found in the Western Thar Desert following a set of 29 principles given by Guru Jambheshwar There are an estimated ten lakh followers of the Bishnoi sect residing in large numbers in states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. They even pray for the green trees and animals that inhabit their land. They make every effort to conserve the environment and the natural way of life. Hand Block Printing:

For those who don’t know, block printing is making use of a carved piece of wood or any other type of wooden block with a pattern to imprint a design on fabric or paper. The craftsmen’s creativity guides them to carve the design stencils on blocks of wood which are then immersed in dyes to absorb the colour. These are then used to create patterns on fabric in an organised manner leaving spellbinding symmetry. Master craftsmen come from a community called the Chipas.

In the early days of printing, it was used to print book covers. Today the phenomenon of block printing is popularly associated with making designs on fabrics by printing on them, with the help of a block made for that purpose. Believed to have its origin in Indian, block printing has been in use around the world now for quite some time. If you make a stop to see block printing at Kankani Village, the craftsmen might sell you a carved block and if you’re lucky. They might let you take some fabric home too!

bishnoi village safari timings

If you’re on foot, the Bishnoi community is kind enough to invite you inside their home for refreshments and respite from the hot sun. The local people generally stay in small hamlets which they call Dhani. These small huts with thatched roofs have the floors made from mud. Although which is plastered with cow dung to avoid the growth of vermin. Hence, the villagers are very keen and adamant regarding the cleanliness of their hamlets. And always keep every inch of interior neat and tidy. As they believe God will not visit their house if it is not clean. The villagers also tend to build a granary to protect their crops and food supplies especially during monsoon seasons by their Dhanis. Also, there is a sump near each hamlet where the villagers store large quantities of water to keep it hygienic and safe from getting evaporated under the sun.

Rural Tourism in India, Bishnoi Village

Have you ever wondered what is it like to live in a desert land with bare minimum amenities? Aren’t you curious about how  culture shape-shifts in Rajasthan?  Do you want an authentic  Rajasthani experience  that is beyond palaces and castles?

Well, in that case, only a quintessential Bishnoi Village Safari can please y our cultural appetite.

Believe us; in this monochromatic land, there are more colors than one can name. Culture drips from every nook and cranny here. And, drenches one in what we call the Rajasthani magic.

Bishnoi Village in   Rajasthan   is a destination where time and space became one entity and refused to move ahead. Although the village co-exists with us, it does live back in time. However, that never became a hurdle in its pursuit of introducing the world to an  authentic Rajasthani lifestyle  and spreading happiness.

So, if you plan to go on this joy ride anytime soon, then we have jotted down everything that can be helpful to you. And special mention to Chhotabhai Prajapat – Bishnoi Jeep Safari for providing us with the Images 🙂

Hello! Bishnoi Lifestyle

blog91 2

The best way to describe the lifestyle of the Bishnoi would be, “simple”.

Mind it, by simple, we don’t mean bland. In fact, Bishnoi village is the opposite of dull as there is something or the other always going on in the village premises.

Bedazzled in the amazing culture of Marwar, Bishnoi village seems like a completely different world. However, it is as regal as any other place in Rajasthan. Although there is no palace or castle here, the culture is no less. Women here too wear heavy jewelry and the colourful attire is the same as in any other place in Rajasthan.

However, what set them apart from other villages such as  Rusirani   is their selfless love for nature and the fact that they live in thatched huts, which interestingly is an amazing lodging option. But we will talk about it a little later in the blog!

The locals live in clean households and the area inhabited by them has a well-functioning traditional water harvesting system. Despite the difficult desert living conditions, there is always plenty of food here in Bishnoi Village.

All About Bishnoi Village History

blog91 3

The Bishnoi community of the Khejri Village was founded in the late 1400s by a spiritual leader Guru Jambheshar.

Bishnoi or Bish (twenty) noi (nine) translated to 29, which was the number of principles set when the foundation of the sect was kept. The sect’s religious philosophy was then pen downed as poetic literature, which is still available in a compilation called Jamnagar.

All castes of the community were welcomed to the sect as long as they followed the 29 principles which included some living practices and some rituals as well.

Later, after the demise of the spiritual leader, he told the sect that the blackbuck was his manifestation and they needed to conserve it along with the environment.

But what made Bishnoi a prominent name in history is an incident that happened in 1731. 363 Bishnois, men, women, and children alike, gave their lives to protect trees from cutting. This haunted the then-government of Maharaja Abhay Singh so much that he had to retreat and apologize for the massacre.

Despite those many people attained martyrdom, the government did ban tree felling in that region after that incident.

Reveling In Bishnoi Tribe Culture

blog91 4 1

Locals of this village practice Hinduism and are Viashnavites (worshippers of Lord Vishnu) as their spiritual leader and were famous as Vishnu’s incarnation.

They worship nature and consider Khejri trees (trees surrounding the village) to be sacred. As a result of which many customs and traditions of this region revolve around nature. Don’t worry; you’ll get a hold of it once you are there.

blog91 4

Rajasthan is famous for its hot and dry climate. For locals, the best way to deal with this adversity of temperature is via their clothing.

People of Bishnoi village wear light cotton clothes, preferably the color white.

The men of the village are generally seen in white-colored dhotis, white kurta, and huge turbans. As for the women, odhni (head scarf), ghagra (skirt), kanchli kurti (blouse) and dhaba are the elements of their attire.

However, the attire of younger women is a little different. They wear Pada, both, puthia and odhni.

Other than that, married women of this village are always seen wearing gold jewelry, especially, a circular gold ring and earrings.

blog91 6

The Bishnoi are pure vegetarians. Moreover, wild fruits and vegetables play an important role in the diet of the locals. Their food contains amazing vegetarian delicacies that will leave you wanting for more. So, it is better you get your taste buds working up before you pay it a visit!

Living Conditions

blog91 7

Villagers in Bishnoi village stay in tiny groups also famous as Dhaani. These Dhanis have thatched roof huts made out of nothing but mud. Neatly kept, with a common courtyard, these hygienic huts follow a unique construction that avoids the growth of vermin.

Villagers also have special granaries for protecting crops and other supplies from rain. And if you are worried about clean water, then, let us assure you that sumps are also made near every hamlet for storing water.

Locals here cook food in earthen ovens and they have a separate compound for their cattle too.

blog91 8

Don’t worry; I won’t list all the 29 rules here.

Out of the 29 principles of the sect, 8 of them prescribe preserving biodiversity. 10 principles talked about hygiene and health. Moreover, 4 other principles provided the guidelines for worshipping. And lastly, the final 7 constituted healthy social behavior.

The most enticing rule that we found was about the restriction of the color blue. Why, you ask? Well, as we told you the villagers here are naturalists, and as blue dye involves cutting of many shrubs, the color isn’t used by any villager of the Bishnoi sect.

Also, the people of the Bishnoi sect cannot consume alcohol.

blog91 9

Bishnoi tribal art consists of a lot of craft pieces that show the finesse of the local artisans.

Terracotta pottery is among the best examples of their artistic prowess. The potters here spend a lot of time shaping clay and converting it into utensils, toys, and whatnot.

Another aspect of Bishnoi art is “durry” which is a carpet made from thick colorful strands. Depicting life in the deserts, with animals and trees, this craft piece from Bishnoi Village is famous all over Rajasthan.

Bishnoi- The Real MVPS Of Forest Conservation!

Although the locals here are more into arts and crafts, they adhere to a lifestyle that respects nature in every shape and form.

To put it in perspective, the people of this village are devout worshippers of nature. In fact, the Bishnoi tribe even prohibits the cutting of trees. In the gist of which, unlike other Hindu communities, the Bishnois of Rajasthan bury their dead ones instead of cremating them.

They make a great deal about saving their wildlife too. The dedication of the villagers is such, that there is even a popular saying here in Rajasthan, “If you are a hunter, the worst thing that can happen to you is to be caught hunting by a Bishnoi”. Whoa!

To be honest, that’s the reason why deer and antelopes feel free gazing in the village premises, which is great for anyone who loves a good wildlife watch.

Fact: In 1996, Nihal Chand Bishnoi sacrificed his life trying to protect wild animals. Whoa! That’s some dedication.

How To Reach Bishnoi Village?

blog91 16 1

You can reach the Bishnoi Village en route to Udaipur from Jodhpur. The nearest airport to the village is located in Jodhpur. So, there is no chance you can reach this place via air. From the airport, you will find a lot of cabs and buses that can take you directly to the village.

Are you wondering about the nearest railway station? Well, that’s in Jodhpur too. Moreover, from there you can find buses and cabs.

Note:  Most times, an open jeep will escort you to the village because of the tedious topography. As exciting as it sounds, it gets really bumpy and the dust keeps flying around. Make sure that you take a scarf or Bandana with you when you start your journey.

Best Time To Visit The Bishnoi Village

blog91 17 1

October – March is the best time to be in the Bishnoi village. Similar to the   best time to be in India , these months best from a temperature point of view. Plus, these times are as well perfect for camel safaris. Furthermore, spotting migration birds during this season is quite usual.

On another note, monsoon starts here from July and ends in August, making it difficult for travelers to enjoy their Rajasthan adventure to the fullest. So, make sure you do not plan your trip anytime around it.
