Top 5 airlines flying to New Zealand

Short flight so no entertainment, turbulence so no food service - overall flight as expected

Great meal. Best seats ever! They need to teach other airlines how to do that.

Overall excellent but the Captain kept the seat belt sign on for far too long, especially at the beginning and end of the flight. It was 2 hours after take-off before the crew were able to start the service (on an 11 hour night flight, reducing our sleeping time) and the seat belt sign on went on during breakfast (90 mins before landing) and was not turned off again until we landed. This made for an uncomfortable journey of trying to limit fluid intake because it was unclear when the toilets would be available for use.

Food was not good. We asked for Muslim food and it was weird tasteless type of boiled veges.

Crew were pleasant, happy to be there and were a joy to be around. Entire operation was professional, well thought out and ran like a Swiss clock.

United flight from SFO to PDX was cancelled. I will ask for a refund. Had to book on Alaska

They announced food service but then never came around. We also couldn’t land so kept trying to get to runway and then had to come up and go around happened like 3 times and cause the child next to me to start throwing up

There was a snafu with confirming seats at check which left us in limbo for the second leg of our trip. I believe the ANZ app is not well integrated with the systems at the terminal resulting in this disconcerting error.

Flight attendants are always pleasant and helpful. Pilot kept us updated.

Just a hiccup being added to the NZ Traveller Declaration a bit late.

This time is good . Don’t cancel flight with out early notice .

Very good experience, considering the short flight the meals were served promptly after takeoff.

X class seats in row 3 with the new configuration are very poor in fact I feel 3B and 3E should no longer be considered as X class seat as there is no forward seat pocket available to these seats and greatly reduced leg room due the intrusion of the business class armrests/table module

It was pretty good. Everyone friendly. Like all airlines, the draconian limitations on baggage and weight and not giving even a free soda kind of drags down the experience a bit.

Last 10 minutes boarding they canceled the flight and didn’t organise anything

Estheticly the plane looks great, although the seats are way too upright. If the seats were just slightly more reclined then the comfort level would increase tenfold. I had the stiffest neck after just a short flight due to this. A nap was almost out of the question.

Cabin crew were very professional and welcoming. They certainly appeared to have lifted their game. Congratulations

I know not directly a Virgin "thing" but I hold Virgin responsible for their subcontractors. Had to wait 45 minutes waiting for baggage at PER before the belt conveyor even started. This is unacceptable and hopefully Virgin engages with whoever to pull their fingers out. I realise PER staff are generally slow at the best of times but this was ridiculous. Maybe more seating for those waiting, a cafe in the baggage area for a light meal while we wait or at the very least a troop of dancing girls to entertain the punters while they stare at the conveyor belt start light almost willing it to fire up.

Very poor. Flight was cancelled due to captain exceeding hours. Told to fend for ourselves for 12 hours until a new flight could be done. This meant overnight accommodation in Hobart. Next plane was delayed and no food onboard. No apologies from Virgin. Extremely disappointing.

Flight was cancelled due to a mechanical fault - Virgin rebooked me on a flight 6 hours later so I cancelled and flew with another carrier

Initial flight was cancelled so moved to an alternative flight. As a result, stuck in a middle seat. Flight then place in holding pattern prior to landing resulting in a very late trip home.

There was nothing I didn’t like, prices a little lower would help

BA Airbus A380 BC upstairs had 2 3 2 layout. The seat was comfy but access for those in middle or window seats had to climb over others fest to get to ailse when seats in bed mode. The layout was not nearly as private as other layouts. The staff was amazing as well as the food. Most airline food is average but this was restaurant quality.

Following a marathon flight riddled by delays and changes from Santiago, Chile, my flight to Melbourne from Sydney was on schedule but I was transferred to the next flight. The reason by ticketing and the floor manager was I missed the entry to flight by one minute! That's right, the emphasised that if I was 1 minute earlier I would be on the flight. I asked what was the point them emphasising 1minute overdue and how that helped me or the situation. They didn't care at all. Replying that if it was one minute earlier they would've done something and smirking delivering the information. Australian's do call Australia home, Qantas calls Australian's suckers.

1) crackly headphone jack 2) one of the emergency seats recline. Usually second row does. But in this case neither did 3) food was scrambled eggs or fruit. 4) fruit should not be the option to eggs 5)miserable unpleasant crew not a smile. Thought that was a virgin thing

Qantas are unable to service and unfit for purpose, they cannot transport Australians on time to overseas destinations. On top of the inflated ticketing, the Sydney flight to Santiago was impacted because the plane was delayed arriving and then further bungling by Qantas admitting the ground new ground crew in charge of cleaning were not trained. The impact on passengers with connecting flights was tremendous and long ques of frustrated passengers waiting for rescheduling. **Qantas has become the Australian Spirit of disappointment**

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

I was pleasantly surprised with my flight to LA with Qantas. Although seats were not the roomies, service was excellent.

The service and smooth landing. Food was delicious and the staff was friendly. We arrived earlier than scheduled.

Note that food has to be purchased in flight. No free food. And no entertainment in flight. So I’ve treated these two items as okay which, in this case, means neutral/not applicable.

My Dad needed assistance to board the plane. The Jetstar staff were excellent with him and made the experience a lot easier😁

No food taken so can't rate also no entertainment so can't rate.

Would be better if can provide small free snacks on a long flight

Boarding was easy and unstressful, though the early "final call" was a bit off-putting. The crew were pleasant, and the seats were comfortable. The prices for food and drink were reasonable, apart from tea and coffee, where simple percolated coffee was charged at espresso prices. Deboarding was OK, though some Jetstar passengers appear to have a bad habit of pushing forward from their assigned rows, making it more difficult to get out for passengers that have paid a premium to sit up-front. Jetstar might want to look to address this to stop it from spreading.

I was allocated an exit row seat and was told to move so it could be given away to someone who had purchased two extra legroom seats and one regular seat but wanted the three to sit together. I was also charged for entertainment after booking but before checking in, and the ground crew couldn't do anything about refunding it. When the whole plane was given access to the entertainment as an apology for the flight being four hours late, I was told they couldn't do anything about that either, so I was charged for something I didn't want even though it would have been free anyway

I got to the airport earlier than I expected, and they let me change to an earlier flight with no trouble.

It was a super crowded time to travel out of Melbourne, but the flight was OK

Worst flying experience of my life. FIVE HOURS delayed! Rude and unhelpful staff and poor communication from the grounds team. Never flying Jetstar again

Worst experience ever flying Melbourne to Phuket. 5 hours delayed! Didn’t land till 1am in the morning. Staff were rude and unhelpful

The best part was Tony Fernandes actually reinstated the Buttercake menu. It has gone missing after Covid & i made a complaint in one of my Tweets back in October 2022. Both flight D170 & D171 landed very smoothly- kudos to both pilots!

The worst experience in any flight I have ever had, delayed for more than 10 hours, lost my other flight so I lost one day during my trip. Didn’t gave me facilities with my luggage either. Never again

I was next to a quite large person. Soni essentially had 2/3 of my seat for myself and couldn't sit properly. Even though there were some other seat available, the staff refuse that I occupy another seat.

Pros: The staff was very friendly. Cons: Long delay. The food is terrible.

I’m a frequent Traveler on all types of airlines, including budget. This was the worst flight experience I’ve ever had. Something was wrong with AirAsia’s systems and we were the whole flight was rescheduled to the following day, the third flight it happened to. Apart from an email which gave the new date the web and app said the original flight date which meant that there were hundreds of people queueing at the airport to try and find out what was going on. People waited six hours to talk to customer service who gave advice that didn’t match the web or app. Nightmare. just advertising for spending the extra hundred dollars I’ve ever seen.

Simple Flying

Which airline is best for travelling from australia to new zealand.

Flying between Australia and New Zealand is a competitive business for airlines. Millions of passengers cross the Tasman Sea each year. The big players on the Tasman routes, Air New Zealand and Qantas, handle the bulk of the traffic. But there are options, including some very interesting fifth freedom flights. They open up some great aircraft options and a chance to travel in the premium seats for a great price.

In this story, we are going to focus on flights between the three large east coast Australian cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and the New Zealand cities of Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. That’s where the bulk of the services fly to and from and it’s also where the fifth freedom flights operate.

Flying out of Sydney

The busiest routes across the Tasman either originate or go to Sydney. Air New Zealand, Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar all frequently criss-cross the 2000+ kilometers to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights tend to be once or twice daily. Jetstar uses A320s and Virgin Australia uses 737-800s.  Qantas and Air New Zealand step up the frequencies, particularly to Auckland.

Qantas flies out of Sydney , Melbourne, and Brisbane to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Most days out of Sydney, it offers four flights a day to Auckland. Qantas operates the workhorse of its fleet, the 737-800, on the route, although there are some exceptions. Every Monday, QF143 flies to Auckland using the far nicer A330-300.

Air New Zealand offers a similar number of flights and uses a more eclectic range of aircraft. On flights to Auckland they mostly use Boeing 777-200s but on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the 787-9 makes an appearance. You’ll also see the A320 and A321neo crop up during quieter times.

There are two interesting fifth freedom flights between Sydney and New Zealand. LATAM flies between Sydney and Auckland daily (and vice versa) using their rather nice 787-9 Dreamliners. The flight originates out of Santiago.

Emirates operates a daily A380 fifth freedom flight between Sydney and Christchurch. EK412 pushes back from Sydney at breakfast time and reaches Christchurch in time for lunch. The return flight leaves Christchurch in the early evening and arrives in Sydney an hour or so later.

As to the best flights between Sydney and New Zealand, if I was flying to Auckland I’d be looking at the LATAM flight or one of the wide-bodied Air New Zealand flights. If I was flying to Wellington, I’d veer towards Virgin Australia because I think they offer the best business class product on that route. For Christchurch, it’s a no brainer. I’d be relaxing on the Emirates A380.

You can check out our review of the LATAM fifth freedom flight here.

Flying out of Melbourne

The Melbourne to New Zealand routes are also busy ones and serviced by Qantas, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia , and Jetstar. Frequencies drop somewhat compared to the Sydney routes.

Qantas almost exclusively uses 737-800s from Melbourne to New Zealand, although on Tuesdays, QF153 is operated by an A330-300. Air New Zealand operates a combination of 777-200s and A321neos to Auckland, with the majority being operated by the 777s. Air New Zealand’s flights to other cities use their smaller Airbuses.

Virgin and Jetstar use 737-800s and A320s respectively.

The fifth freedom flight out of Melbourne is Singapore Airlines’ four times weekly 777-200 service between Melbourne and Wellington . It departs Melbourne at breakfast time on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, arriving in Wellington at lunchtime and heading back the same afternoon.

Best flights between Melbourne and New Zealand? If I was flying to Auckland I’d be choosing one of Air New Zealand’s 777-200 services. If I was flying to Wellington, I’d be making myself comfortable on Singapore Airlines. And if I was flying to Christchurch, I’d probably lean towards Virgin Australia’s business class onboard their 737-800s.

Flying out of Brisbane

Finally, let's look at the Queensland capital of Brisbane. Jetstar doesn’t fly to New Zealand out of Brisbane, preferring to use Coolangatta Airport on the Gold Coast, ninety minutes drive south. But Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Virgin Australia all send planes across the Tasman from Brisbane.

Qantas uses 737-800s to New Zealand out of Brisbane, except for their weekly A330-300 oddity. QF119 to Auckland every Tuesday morning is an A330-300.

Air New Zealand also uses single-aisle Airbus planes out of Brisbane. The exception is one of their daily Auckland-Brisbane-Auckland services which utilizes a 777-200.

Virgin Australia, as you’d expect, flies 737-800s on their Brisbane-New Zealand routes.

The fifth freedom flight out of Brisbane is offered by China Airlines which flies between Brisbane and Auckland daily using an A350-900. Their fares are super competitive.

Flying between Brisbane and New Zealand? The tough choice is the Auckland route. That Air New Zealand 777-200 is a nice plane, but I would be mightly tempted to try the China Airlines A350-900.

Having concentrated on the larger cities, it’s worth noting that flights across the Tasman Sea are also available from Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Adelaide, and Perth. Air New Zealand has a really tidy coverage of Australian cities. Plus there are some real bargains to be found when flying the thinner routes across the Tasman, such as on Virgin Australia’s seasonal Newcastle-Auckland flights .

But I keep getting drawn back to those fifth freedom flights. Wide bodied planes, premium cabins, and some super competitive fares. In my mind, they are the best way to cross the Tasman.

What have I missed? What’s your opinion? Post a comment.

Top 5 airlines serving from Australia to New Zealand

Flight was delayed and no information was provided what was new time Change gate 3 times at Madina airport First gate was 113 Second gate was 204 And last gate was 113 again

I liked everything accept the delay try to improve in that area

Flight from Dubai to Zagreb very bad cabin crew. Bad food

Checkin and boarding staff at Delhi Airport is not cooperative with passengers Their behavior very humiliating . They don’t allow Lap top bag and Ladies’ purse/vanity bag which most of the airlines allow besides cabin baggage and check in baggages. They try to charge extra payment on the pretext of small variations which normally other Airlines staff don’t do. Airline staff should be courteous & cooperative but check in staff of Emirates Airline at Delhi was not so at all.

I was traveling business purposes and I only had one carry on and a personal computer back pack . My carry on was 8.5 kg little more than allowable. At jfk airport check in they did not let me carry it . I was little disappointed.

Probably the best flight I’ve ever been on. Emirates first class is leagues beyond British airways and Lufthansa’s.

The individual attention the crew gives to passengers is commendable and I find them positively helpful.

The amenities offered in the Business class is far away less compared with other Air Companies. Emirates is going down in the competition pricing the same value as Qatar airways for example.

Crew in Hyderabad could have been more helpful they were only focused on ripping customers.

On both legs of my trips (Jhb - Dxb and Dxb - Jhb) the entertainment system did not work.

Top 5 airlines flying to Australia

Can you please process refund. Mum died and dad went to Pakistan to bury her after cancelling flight.

Short flight so no entertainment, turbulence so no food service - overall flight as expected

All was good, the only thing was it didn't run on time.

The staff and crew on board were excellent. Business class however, was very weird. I thought we would have individual pods, but the way it was set up was unexpected. Not very private and If you wanted to lay down, you had to have an entire bed made up for you by the crew, rather than how Delta one works where you could just lie down whenever you feel like it. It was a 16 hour flight. I chose not to have my bed made, and that turned out to be a good idea because everybody who had their bed made had to wait for the crew to roll up their mattresses. So strange!

Crew were pleasant, happy to be there and were a joy to be around. Entire operation was professional, well thought out and ran like a Swiss clock.

United flight from SFO to PDX was cancelled. I will ask for a refund. Had to book on Alaska

Good food and entertainment options. Great Staff that were all welcoming and caregiving.

Flight was canceled due to technical issue shortly before the check-in counters opened. Passengers were rebooked on a flight three days later. Request to be accommodated on Air Tahiti Nui could not be processed. Customer service sorted out the refund after calling and being put on hold for almost an hour.

Carring crew, nice ambiance of the cabin, comfortable beds, good food well served. We liked everything.

2 of the 6 economy toilets were out of order. Drinks were not offered often enough - you have to order on-screen, which is often unavailable. Snacks and Milo ran out very early. Crew was fine but I think there was a sticking issue

flight delayed, wait in crowded gate. staff inattentive. had to remind them to get my coat from their closet. not many new movies, media choices were limited (nothing compared to Emirates.) Lounge was crowded

flight delayed, wait in crowded gate. staff inattentive. had to remind them to get my coat from their closet. not many new movies, media choices were limited (nothing compared to Emirates.)

Initial flight was cancelled so moved to an alternative flight. As a result, stuck in a middle seat. Flight then place in holding pattern prior to landing resulting in a very late trip home.

There was nothing I didn’t like, prices a little lower would help

Flight delay was informed at the last minute. Food quality is not up to Qantas standard I was unable to book an online boarding pass on any of my 6 flights.

Rescheduled after ticket purchased and issued, not 2 or 3 times and not a fourth but by 5 times, by Qantas, that's right, 5 changes! Forcing an overnight stay in Chile and need for visa. Qantas can no longer provide basic services as a national or international service provider. Professionalism is extinct and the provider needs to be mentored and educated in perfecting who to operate as an airline. Qantas is the spirit of Australian dissatisfaction.

Amazing! Was put on the earlier flight and I requested for an aisle seat and was given it. Thanks Qantas!

I didn't realize they didn't have bathrooms on the plane. Almost had a very bad situation.

Everthing ok , crew very nice but but we had a bad experience with the wheel chair we had to wait too much for the chair, my husband couldn’t walk and he was in lot of pain , LATAM has to take care of that

Hostile flight attendants. Second flight with Jose so much better. Arrived 1/2 hour early. Thanks.

the flight from Boston to Curitiba was on time actually 30 minutes earlier. latam was not able to unload the luggage for custom checkup in Sao Paulo ii took two and half hours . i missed the flight to Curitiba spend the night in hotel and then flying in the morning to Curitiba

Very unprofessional staff in the checking and boarding. There was no space for my carry-on bag, which is understandable for a full flight. However, the rudeness in answering my questions about my bag were unnecessary. Shaming and threatening a passenger to be left behind was something I had never experienced (I am 57 years old and a Skymiles member) before. At a minimum, the boarding staff (Krystal Mejia and her manager Dee) should undergo further training on cultural sensitivity and professional skills on speaking with passengers. Krystal, just because I have dark hair and “look Latina” does not mean I can speak Spanish. Your assumption and threatening words until the very ending of my boarding (door of the airplane) were not only unnecessary and stressful but something that a passenger should not experience before boarding.

Check in of my luggage which needed to be paid for was excellent. Thanks to Nora

This airline is full of junk fees. After paying to get my kids to sit with me, we were asked at the gate to check in our roller bags and pay $40 for each one. Peruvian passengers all took their roller bag in the plane. I don’t appreciate airlines who spot the gringos to tax them more.

The flight from PDX to New York was cancelled, and I got rebooked one day later. Because of this I missed a meeting at my final destination, EZE. I now need to stay longer in Argentina, and was told the tariff difference was $780 plus $150 penalty! I am not using my return ticket, and have purchased a one way ticket EZE-PDX for $606 with another airline. SHAMEFUL

Our yoga retreat was cancelled and besides not refunding is, they would not even let us change dates or locations. As a matter of fact they wouldn’t even talk to us and kept referring to the travel agent, who said they couldn’t change anything and it was up to the airline to do so. They passed the buck until it was too late to do anything about it. Avoid Latham and Budget Air for your travel plans.

a constant reminder that you need to work harder so you can avoid this airline

For some reason the cabin was kept very cold. Unlike my flight over which i would say was excellent this was a long, cold flight home.

I got to the airport earlier than I expected, and they let me change to an earlier flight with no trouble.

The price difference/saving isn't sufficient to compensate the experience difference, don't recommend unless flight is under 3 hours. Huge queues for check in and the priority lane of other ailines blocked checked in Jetstar passengers from proceeding through to screening. Gate change to a "dungeon gate" that didn't have toilets in the vicinity. 45minute delay in boarding, no updates or explaination, let alone apology for any inconvenience. 1 scanner working for a full fight to board, no coordination. Loaded on to crowded buses to get on the plane in the middle of the tarmac, up stairs with no explaination. 4 bus trips. No system for boarding in sections. Over an hour late departing. Nothing complimentary, not even water or in-flight music. Pay wave not available and no cash sales. Staff onboard were friendly and professional.

Flight was delayed by 1 hour, we board then had to sit on the tarmac for another hour before take off. The flight was fine but again another delay with the baggage which took another hour to appear on the carousel.

It was a super crowded time to travel out of Melbourne, but the flight was OK

Australian watchdog proposes to approve Air NZ, Virgin Australia codeshare

By Alfred Chua 2024-05-02T03:30:00+01:00

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is proposing to authorise a unilateral code-sharing agreement between Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.

Both carriers are seeking authorisation for Virgin Australia to place its code on Air New Zealand’s trans-Tasman flights between the two countries.

“The code-share rights are provided on the condition that Air New Zealand specifies the fares at which Virgin Australia may market and resupply those itineraries,” the ACCC states.

In proposing to approve the partnership, the competition regulator says the arrangement “has the potential” to increase ticketing choices for travellers to New Zealand.

Under the partnership, Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand are looking to jointly provide businesses with discounts, as well as other marketing offers, for Virgin Australia-operated flights between Australia and New Zealand.

The ACCC also notes the proposed codeshare arrangement will not apply to flights where both airlines’ networks overlap. Virgin Australia currently flies to Queenstown in New Zealand from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Air New Zealand has a larger trans-Tasman network, with flights to Australia from Wellington, Queenstown, Auckland and Christchurch.

Commission deputy chair Mike Keogh adds: “We consider it unlikely that any significant increase in passenger demand for trans-Tasman services due to this code sharing arrangement would raise airfares.”

The ACCC has also proposed to allow Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand to commence commercial planning for the marketing and sale of Virgin Australia trans-Tasman flights.

The commission is seeking submissions on its draft determination until 8 May, before it makes its final decision.

The best train journeys in Australia for slow travel

Australia's trains offer a leisurely way to traverse the country's vastness, capturing both its heart and coasts. Photo / Supplied

When we think of travel, most people focus only on the destination instead of the journey itself. But life is all about experiences, and travelling across Australia by train really delivers, writes Nannette Holliday

Australia is a vast continent. It’s impossible to drive across or around it in a few days, and if you fly, so much is missed in between.

Fortunately, Journey Beyond operates three leisurely, charming, and nostalgic three-to-four-day train journeys that cross Australia’s beating heart from east to west and north to south.

The Indian Pacific travels from Sydney on Australia’s eastern Pacific coast to Western Australia’s capital of Perth via Adelaide.

The Ghan follows pioneer John McDouall Stuart, the early Afghan cameleers, and the Overland Telegraph line, chugging north-south through the middle of Australia and Alice Springs from the northernmost capital of Darwin to the fertile wine regions of Adelaide .

The Great Southern tracks along Australia’s south-eastern picturesque coastline from Adelaide to Brisbane via Melbourne or Canberra .

Each journey is an epic adventure with old-world charm and luxury hotel-style comfort. Relax and enjoy world-class regional fine dining with premium paired wines whilst absorbing a kaleidoscope of colourful Australian panoramas.

Each unique journey includes stops at iconic Australian landmarks, off-board Indigenous cultural immersive experiences, and dinners under millions of stars with newfound friends. With everything included, life aboard any of these train journeys provides an easy, leisurely way to experience Australia’s vast beauty and uniqueness.

INDIAN PACIFIC

The Indian Pacific covers a whopping 4352km from Sydney to Perth, making it one of the world's longest train journeys. Photo / Supplied

Covering 4352km from Sydney to Perth, the Indian Pacific is one of the world’s longest train journeys.

Over three nights and four days, it crosses the entire Australian continent allowing passengers to access some of the country’s most inhospitable areas in complete air-conditioned comfort with a glass of bubbles in hand.

Departing Sydney, passengers discover the rare and fascinating landscapes of the Australian Outback, from Broken Hill, the birthplace of mining giant BHP, to Adelaide, the city of churches and home of the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills wine regions and Cook, a ghost town.

The journey continues along the bottom of Australia, crossing the mindboggling vista of the Nullarbor (meaning no trees) – where the train traverses the world’s longest straight stretch of railway track (478km) before arriving at Perth.

The reverse journey from Perth to Sydney includes Kalgoorlie , one of Australia’s biggest gold rush regions, the Nullarbor, Cook, Adelaide, and the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains.

In either direction, it’s a journey of rich colours – verdant forests, mighty mountains , golden wheat and canola fields, pink salt lakes and deep red deserts – where the unique soft textured vegetation contrasts against sandy and rocky landscapes that create memorable patterns and forms.

The variety of off-board excursions gives passengers an excellent insight into each region.

Broken Hill isn’t ‘flashy’, but it is character-filled. The most popular (and risque) tour is Shelita Buffet’s ‘Main Drag’, a fun-filled frolicking city walk. Adelaide’s favourite tour option is taste-testing premium wines through the Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale. Or heading to Hahndorf in Adelaide Hills and soaking up the German heritage, gastronomic delights, and handicrafts.

The Indian Pacific traverses the world’s longest straight stretch of railway, spanning an impressive 478km across the Nullarbor. Photo / Supplied

Relax in the train’s lounge bar while crossing the Nullarbor’s 650km limestone plateau. With no trees in sight, it’s easy to spot iconic Australian wildlife (emus, kangaroos and, above, wedge-tailed eagles).

The evening dinner stop at Rawlinna Station is a highlight, with elegant long tables stretching beside the train under the million-star night. Rawlinna is the largest sheep station in the Southern Hemisphere, with 80,000 sheep over a million hectares.

The Perth-Sydney journey stops at Kalgoorlie, where passengers climb aboard a massive dump truck before seeing them operating, looking like ants in the ‘Super Pit’ mine.

Plus, the last day involves venturing through the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains in the glass floor Scenic Skyway, gliding over the forests on the Scenic Cableway and boarding the Scenic Railway, the steepest in the world at a 52-degree incline.

Then relax over a superb lunch at Echo Point Lookout, toasting the panoramic views with award-winning wine — a fitting end to a nostalgic, ever-changing slideshow journey across an incredible continent.

The Ghan offers an informative cruise along Katherine’s Nitmiluk Gorge and an exploration of Australia’s opal capital, Coober Pedy. Photo / Supplied

Have you ever wondered if Australia’s heart is as arid as described by Wikipedia? Then jump aboard The Ghan for an enticing and surprising 2979km journey from Darwin, Australia’s most northern capital, through central Australia to Adelaide, South Australia’s capital (or in reverse). This three or four-day journey operates from March to November.

From the northern aquamarine seas and cloudless azure skies to the centre’s red ochre sands, the ghostly moonscape of Coober Pedy, craggy, rusty Flinders Ranges and lush emerald wineries around Adelaide, each landscape is as diverse as a painter’s palette.

The Ghan is an epic adventure with a range of unique off-train stops including an informative cruise along Katherine’s spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge, a bonfire under the stars at the magnificent Manguri, and a helicopter ride over the spectacular Simpsons Gap (optional upgrade experience with limited availability).

Aboard The Ghan, dining transforms into a luxurious affair. Photo / Supplied

Travellers can enhance their experiences by enjoying extra days in and around Darwin and Adelaide before or after the journey. Or break the journey and discover more of Australia’s heart at Alice Springs and Uluru .

One thing is for sure, this is the most comfortable and relaxing way to see Australia’s mighty heart. The memories of every beautiful experience, delicious food , accompanying drinks, superb staff interactions and new friends made will never disappear.

GREAT SOUTHERN

The Great Southern's journey spans 2885km, making it Australia's longest unofficial wine-tasting and gourmet feast trail. Photo / Supplied

Operating during Australia’s summer from December to February, the Great Southern is a rail journey of south-eastern Australia’s top epicurean and gastronomic regions, both on and off the train. The four-day journey from Brisbane to Adelaide (or reverse), is Australia’s longest (unofficial) wine-tasting and gourmet feast trail, covering 2885km.

The passing emerald fields interspersed with colourful blooms , rich nuggety-brown soil, champagne sands, sparkling oceans, and vast cobalt summer skies warm guests’ souls externally. While on board, chefs fill everyone with a range of locally sourced fresh produce and native ingredients from the destinations travelled through — savour succulent seafood , swordfish, quandong, blood orange, bush honey, and Asian greens.

Amongst the many off-board excursions, the highlights include a soul-soothing beachside dinner at Coffs Harbour, wine (and chocolate ) tasting through the Hunter Valley (with over 150 cellar doors!), stepping into the Edge, a fully glassed room and floor 285m up at Melbourne’s Skydeck, followed by a fine dining extravaganza at Eureka 89 a floor above.

Or on the Adelaide-Brisbane journey, a historic tour on one of the biggest family-owned vineyards in the Grampians, the Fallen Giants Vineyard, and a day in Canberra, Australia’s capital. By booking additional tours in Adelaide and Brisbane, it’s easy to experience more wineries and gourmet delights.

Operating only during Australia’s summer (December to February), the Great Southern showcases south-eastern Australia’s top gastronomic regions. Photo / Supplied

For the journey of a lifetime, book the Ultimate West by Land and Sea in 2024. Over 25 days, the journey explores Australia’s remotest regions – west, north and south – in all their magnificent glory.

Departing on August 24, the journey from Perth to Adelaide starts at the world-class Westin Perth. Enjoy another day in Perth before boarding Silversea’s Silver Cloud for a 17-night all-inclusive luxury cruise from Perth to Darwin.

Discover the stunningly unique and beautiful Buccaneer Archipelago, Mitchell Falls, and Kimberley region along the way. After three exciting days in Darwin and a sizzling sunset harbour cruise, jump aboard The Ghan to Adelaide. This journey is sure to fulfill a multitude of dreams.

‘That would require a stadium’: Number of customer caught up in Bonza collapse revealed

Failed budget airline Bonza has left almost 60,000 customers out of pocket, a court has heard.

How collapsed airline got it so wrong

How collapsed airline got it so wrong

Over 60,000 customers have been left out of pocket following the collapse of budget airline Bonza, a court has heard.

The company entered voluntary administration last week, less than 18 months after launching its first flights.

Accountancy firm Hall Chadwick has been appointed as administrators, with the first meeting of creditors scheduled to be held on Friday.

A court heard on Tuesday that the company had over 60,000 creditors - including 323 employees who were owed wages and annual leave and 120 trade creditors.

There were a further 57,933 customers who had bookings with the company, barrister James Hutton SC, who is acting for the administrators, told the Federal Court on Tuesday morning.

“Here we have a potential for 60-odd thousand creditors,” Mr Hutton said.

“And of that we gave email notification yesterday … and as at this morning over 41,000 people had opened up those emails.”

Budget airline Bonza entered administration last week. Picture: Supplied.

The court heard it was estimated that upwards of 20,000 creditors could seek to take part in the creditors’ meeting and the administrators were working through the practicalities including how a poll could be taken.

As well, it’s unclear where the creditors were concentrated, but it was estimated that they were based around the regional routes where the airline operated.

“It is very difficult to see how 20,000-odd people could ever be accommodated in a physical meeting, that would require a stadium,” Mr Hutton told Justice Elizabeth Cheeseman.

As well, Mr Hutton told the court that the administrators were not in possession of the six aircraft which made up the Bonza fleet.

The planes were leased while the airline was operating and the lessor had terminated its agreement with Bonza before it entered administration.

“The company does not have access to any of the six aircraft which it was presently using,” Mr Hutton said.

The court heard that the aircraft were located at airports around Australia, including Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, and the lessor intended to return them overseas.

Hopes have been shot down for Bonza after fresh fleet negotiations failed, leaving all flights cancelled and a majority of staff without work until at least May 14.

Qantas will begin making remediation payments of $225 to $450 to customers after settling its flight cancellation lawsuit with the ACCC.

Upstart airliner Bonza launched in Australia with budgie-smugglers and purple cocktails, but 18 months later the low-cost carrier collapsed. Here’s why.
