The Cambridge Satchel Company

Lovingly handmade in the UK from 100% leather, The Cambridge Satchel Company offers a range of satchels from traditional designs to contemporary colours.

Their very first satchel was inspired by traditional British, leather schoolbags from years gone by. They still make satchels but their collection now includes large and small bags and accessories in lots of sizes and styles with many inspired by bags from the past.

These sustainably made bags from the Scottish Textile Showcase come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are perfect for organising your life on the move. Made from high-quality Harris Tweed, linen, tartan and Borders tweed with a water-resistant lining, these popular bags are part of their sustainable living collection. Chapman Bags

Simple and distinctive, casual but elegant, practical and pleasurable, Tea Green aims to offer a contemporary and individual collection of handbags, purses and more. Established in 2013, Tea Green is a small design business set up by Frances Bayliss, based in Somerset, England.

P. Kirkwood

Providing their customers with minimal, functional, stylish leather goods for both men and women. All of P.Kirkwood's pieces are designed and handcrafted at their workshop in Brighton.

Jane Hopkinson Bags

A family-run business in the heart of the English countryside. Jane Hopkinson's British-made bags cover over thirty designs from small day time and evening bags. Including across the body bags, satchels, tote bags through to the weekend and travel bags.

Billy Tannery

After discovering that not one goatskin left over from the UK food industry was being tanned here, Billy Tannery decided to do something. Tapping into local leather knowledge, the brand built a pioneering microtannery in Leicestershire.

Their sustainable, bark-tanned goat leather now completes the circle from food to leather. Their growing range of leather goods is designed and made in England to celebrate this exceptional material.

Here’s what Wikipedia have to say: A Gladstone bag is a small portmanteau suitcase built over a rigid frame which could separate into two equal sections. Unlike a suitcase, a Gladstone bag is "deeper in proportion to its length" and is typically made of stiff leather and often belted with lanyards. The bags are named after William Gladstone (1809–1898), the four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

What is the history of the Gladstone bag UK? 

It was originally designed by J. G. Beard at his leather shop in the City of Westminster. Beard was an avid admirer of four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone, so much so that he named this famous metal hinged bag after him. From 1859 onwards Gladstone’s new-world view and liberal approach to politics led to more opportunity for travel. When packing for these adventures it is said a row of Gladstone holdalls would line the hallway of No. 10 Downing Street before each trip, paving the way for a new trend. As an inspirational figure during his time, many political peers and other ministers of State followed suit. Towards the end of the 19th Century, and the end of his political reign, the iconic travel bag became  synonymous with British class and refinery, being sold to London’s elite in bespoke retailers on New Bond Street and Piccadilly.

Why The Gladstone Travel Bag Was Named After One Of Britain’s Most Iconic Prime Ministers

The Gladstone bag. A symbol of Victorian Britain. A delve into our country’s past and still desired by the most sophisticated of sartorial enthusiasts. Now recognised as a timepiece bag owned by individuals with a nuanced style, this small portmanteau was once an accessory carried by the United Kingdom’s prime ministers. In particular, they passed through the hands of William Ewart Gladstone. Taking the top seat in office an impressive four times between 1868 and 1894, Gladstone’s name first became associated with the hinged luggage bag by leather maker, J G Beard from his leather shop in Westminster.

Joining the liberals in 1859, his new world views conjured more opportunities to travel. When packing for his adventures at 10 Downing Street, a row of Gladstone holdalls would be assembled in the hallway by his assistants. An inspirational figure during his time, many ministers of State and political members followed suit – shopping for their leather Gladstone travel bags in London’s finest shops on New Bond Street and Picadilly. In the late 1800’s, they became symbolic with class and refinery. Oscar Wilde wrote in Picture of Dorian Gray, “ What a way for a fashionable painter to travel! A Gladstone bag and an ulster!”.

Adapter Plug Naming Convention - What Do The Adapter Letters Mean

Many customers ask about the adapter naming convention. Finding the correct adapter for the country you are visiting can be confusing. Going In Style has a unique naming convention for our adapters. Other companies name their adapters differently. Lets take a look at Going In Style's naming convention.

Non Grounded Adapter Names

Non Grounded Adapters are named A, B, C, D, E and F. The A plug is the North America non grounded adapter plug. An adapter plug can work in many different countries. A North America plug will work in Canada, United States, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, etc. These are all countries in North America. However, the North America Plug also works in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. These countries are not in North America. Adapters are given a one letter name and then matched to the countries that use that plug.

Grounded Adapter Names

Grounded adapter plugs are given a three letter name. Going In Style's grounded adapters are named GUA, GUB, GUC, GUD, GUE, GUF, GUI, GUZ and GUS. The North America grounded adapter plug is named GUA. GUA plug works in most countries in North America and also works in some Asian countries such as Taiwan, Japan and Thailand. 

Adapters are given a short lettered name so the adapter type can be easily identified and matched to its appropriate country.
