Family History

Today the third, fourth and fifth generations of Heinemans, Louis, Edward and Dustin share the family wine making tradition. The Heinemans and other local growers cultivate 50 acres of grapes on the island. This gives the winery "vine to wine" quality control year after year. The native grapes are grown on South Bass. The two major varieties are Concord and Catawba.

Get a wine and cheese sampler and head out to the bier garten in the back. Nice place to just get away. A long time favorite. Rob L, Ohio read all testimonials

Crystal Cave

An ecological phenomenon, the Crystal Cave is not to be overlooked on your next journey to Put-in-Bay. Discovered at the Heineman Winery, this remarkable gem complements a trip to Put-in-Bay’s local family Winery and lovely wine garden.

The Crystal Cave Particulars

Crystal Cave is home to the biggest geode on the earth. The walls are covered in strontium sulfate, a bluish mineral called celestite. The Crystal Cave contains beautiful celestine crystals up to 3 feet wide. These crystals can increase in size from 8 to 18 inches in size.

Excursions of the cavern and Heineman Winery are offered for $10 for adults and $5 for youths ages 6 to 11. Tours can be enjoyed seven days a week from May until late September.

Monday through Saturday, cave tours start at 11 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. On Sunday, tours begin at 12 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Be sure to bring a lite sweater or jacket as the temperature in the cavern is consistently cooler than outdoors.

The Chronology of the Crystal Cave

They accidentally came upon the Crystal Cave. Uncovered in 1897 by miners drilling a well for the Winery, the cavern was rather a big discovery. Initially, the cave was utilized to gather crystals marketed for producing fireworks.

Before Prohibition, Put-in-Bay was home to many wineries making their own wines. Prohibition and the path of the Volstead Act hit the island hard, and all 17 other wineries closed down.

The Crystal Cave also played an essential part in preserving the Heineman Winery during Prohibition. This harvesting expanded the cave to its current size.

Heineman Winery was fortunate to have the entrepreneurial brain of Norman Heineman, son of creator Gustav, guiding the way. Norman opened the Crystal Cave to tourists, selling access and unfermented grape juice.

When other local wineries closed on the island, Norman Heineman, son of the founder Gustav, had the clever idea to open the cavern to the people. He sold access to the cave along with unfermented grape juice.

The Crystal Cave is situated about a mile from downtown Put-in-Bay. Nearby draws include Saunders Golf Course, Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center, and the Chocolate Cafe and Museum.

Heineman Winery

Gustav Heineman, an immigrant from Baden, Germany, opened Heineman Winery in 1888. Baden is the grape-growing territory of Germany, and Heineman came prepared with expert winemaking knowledge.

The Lake Erie Islands are excellent for winemaking. It is its own winemaking heaven! The grapes are exceptional thanks to excellent dirt conditions and a prolonged growing season due to the tempering effect of Lake Erie.

Heineman Winery produces all types of wine from native grapes on the island, such as the Labrusca grape. They produce all types of wines, from red to white, and their most famous wine, Pink Catawba.

The Heineman Winery parcel consists of a gorgeous wine garden and the Crystal Cave Gift Shop , which are both open at the same hours as the Crystal Cave. Appreciate some fine wine along with cheese plates, and bring home bottles of wine and gifts after your summer vacation on Put-in-Bay

cave tours put in bay

A visit to the Crystal Cave and Heineman’s Winery is so uniquely Put-in-Bay it is not to be missed. This little island is full of natural wonders, none more so than the Crystal Cave.

The world’s largest geode can be found here. Made of crystals, the geodes are up to 3 feet in width! That is a very big crystal. This magical cave is almost otherworldly with walls covered in strontium sulfate, a bluish mineral called celestite.

Crystal Cave History

Heineman is Put-in-Bay’s oldest winery. Gustav Heineman immigrated from Germany and recognized that the unique ecosystem of the island would make perfect grapes for wine. Lake Erie has a tempering effect on the weather and helps produce ideal soil for growing.

He opened his doors in 1888 and by 1900 there were 16 more wineries. But it is the discovery of the Crystal Cave in 1897 that sealed the winery’s fate. Miners were digging a well when they came upon it. The Heineman family recognized it as a special feature of their property but it wasn’t til prohibition they realized how special.

Prohibition hit the other wineries hard and more of them closed their doors. Gustav’s son, Norman, an intrepid businessman, saw the potential of the cave. Along with unfermented grape juice, he started selling tickets to the cave. It was in this way the winery was able to withstand Prohibition.

A visit to the Crystal Cave is nicely complemented with wine tastings at the Wine Garden. The Heineman Winery specializes in sweet wines but their selection is quite varied. You can purchase souvenirs from the gift shop as well as bottles to take home and give to friends.

This part of Put-in-Bay is a tad more relaxed than downtown. Nearby neighbors include Perry’s Cave , a limestone cave with an underground lake, and the Chocolate Museum and Cafe.

While You’re Here

Make sure not to miss Heineman Winery. It would certainly be hard to miss since they’re on the same site, but make sure to take the time to check it out. You can purchase wine (or grape juice) that is made entirely on the island. That is to say that even the grapes used are grown here. From ground to bottle, Put-in-Bay through and through. Don’t miss it!

Testimonials

Nathan M:  “Very cool. I thought the winery would be a waste after seeing the cave, but no, the cave was incredible and the winery tour was interesting and informative. The included glass of wine(or juice)was delicious. Multiple award-winning wines from a vineyard where they still pick the grapes by hand because they have to, machines won’t fit!”

Adam R:  “A very cool place to visit. This is a cave that is also the world’s largest geode. There is also Perry’s Cave right across the street. Both are very cool places to visit and very reasonable prices. It’s a short trip by ferry. The Island is pretty big for walking. You can ferry your car, motorcycle, or bikes. Taxis are available as well as golf carts and bicycle rentals. Plan on spending a full day and remember to find out when the last ferry leaves the island to the mainland. Have fun!”

Lauren B:  “It’s a huge celestite geode you can walk in! I’m a rockhound, so I wish it was a longer experience. They had to drag me out to go on the wine tour. It’s a small space and they pack it tight. You’ll find it interesting if you aren’t a rock person, but one short walkthrough and you’ll be good. Be prepared for stairs. No touching!”

Crystal Cave

The Crystal Cave is unique to Put-in-Bay, so be sure not to miss it during a vacation to the island. Located on the site of the Heineman Winery , this geological treasure pairs well with a visit to the Wine Garden at the Winery. Wine and crystals are a great combination.

cave tours put in bay

The Crystal Cave is home to the world’s largest geode. The crystals are up to 3 feet in width and the walls are covered in strontium sulfate, a bluish mineral called celestite. These crystals can range anywhere from 8 to 18 inches in length.

The History of Crystal Cave

Miners discovered the cave in 1897. They were working to dig a well for the Winery and accidentally came upon this natural wonder. Originally workers harvested crystals from the cave to sell for the manufacturing of fireworks. This harvesting expanded the cave to its size today.

The Crystal Cave also played an important role in saving the Heineman Winery during Prohibition. When other wineries closed on the island, Norman Heineman, son of the founder Gustav had the brilliant idea to open the cave to the public. He sold tickets to the cave along with unfermented grape juice. Heineman’s survived Prohibition and is still a family-owned business today.

Heineman’s offers tours of both the cave and the winery all week during the summer season. There is also a gift shop on site. The shop sells souvenirs from the cave as well as Heineman Wine. Enjoy a glass in the Wine Garden and take home a bottle or two to savor. Take a case back to the mainland for friends. Specializing in sweet wines, favorites include the Pink Catawba and the mildly sweet Niagara.

The Crystal Cave is located about a mile from downtown Put-in-Bay. Nearby attractions include Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center , the Chocolate Cafe and Museum, and Saunders Golf Course .

Testimonials

Jack S: “Pretty neat place. Probably our favorite attraction on the island. The reasonable entry fee gets you a quick tour of the crystal cavern (“largest geode in the world!”) and into the small winery as well as a ticket for a sample of wine or grape juice. The tour was interesting and the drinks were good. As a bonus, there’s a nice garden in the back for you to relax and enjoy your beverage. My only complaint is that the cheese and crackers they sell at the bar are pretty low-quality. But hey, you don’t have to get those.”

Adam R:  “A very cool place to visit. This is a cave that is also the world’s largest geode. There is also Perry’s Cave right across the street. Crystal Cave Put-in-Bay

Crystal Cave is a geological treasure on Put-in-Bay.  It is home to the World’s largest geode.  Strontium sulfate lines the walls of this beloved cave which is open for tour.  This truly beautiful site is surely one not to miss out on. You can find the Crystal Cave near the Heineman Winery in the center of the island.

Crystal Cave Particulars

The Crystal Cave was originally discovered by workers digging above in it 1897.  They were working 40 feet above when the ground fell into the cavern.  Today, the cavern is much larger than what these men discovered.  The crystals were once harvested to aid in the production of fireworks. Consequently, the cave grew in size.  Now, the crystals in the cave range from 8 to 14 inches.

During Prohibition, the Crystal Cave helped keep Heineman’s Winery open by giving tours. Fortunately, the Crystal Cave tours helped to keep the business afloat.  Interestingly, there were many more wineries on the island prior to Prohibition.  However, they did not have a tourist attraction to lure visitors.  Consequently, the other wineries were forced to close.  Thankfully, the great island tradition of winemaking continues with the 4th generation of the Heineman family.

Crystal Cave Location

This spectacular cave is located beneath the historic Heineman’s Winery .  The winery is the oldest family-run winery in Ohio.  Since 1888, they have been producing island wines and several of those wines have won awards in competition.  The location is at the intersection of Catawba Rd and Thompson Avenue. Perry’s Family Fun Center is across the street. There are many fun things to do at Perry’s Family Fun Center . The War of 18 Holes Mini Golf , GemStone Mining and more await guests.

Crystal Cave Tours

Tours are offered 7 days a week from early May to late September

  • Cost: $8 Adults $4 Children Aged 6 through 11
  • Monday – Saturday Tours Begin at 11 AM;
  • Sunday Tours Begin At 12 PM; Tours Conclude at 5 PM Daily

Around the Neighborhood

As you leave the cave you are in the center of the island. Nearby is the Goat Restaurant famous for their Perch Tacos and homemade soups of which several varieties are offered daily. There are several nearby walking trails and parks including the Alfred Parker Park and the Jane Coats Wildflower Trail . Both are ideal locations for a stroll. Another favorite past time is just cruising around the island in a golf golf cart admiring the various types of architecture that you will see on the island.

Ohio’s Crystal Cave in Put In Bay: An In-Depth Guide for Curious Travelers

by Rock Seeker July 14, 2023, 8:12 pm updated November 6, 2023, 8:46 pm

Crystal Cave is a geological wonder located on Lake Erie, about a mile outside Put-in-Bay, Ohio. The cave is located at Heineman Winery , which has been owned and operated by the same family for five generations.

History of Crystal Cave at Put In Bay

The area around Lake Erie is well-suited for growing grapes. Gustaf Heineman, a German immigrant, recognized the favorable conditions and opened a winery there in 1888. By 1897 the winery’s growth made a new well necessary.

As workers dug, they came across a “vug,” an empty limestone cavity lined with crystals about 30 feet below the surface of the ground. Further investigation of the 40-foot diameter cavern identified the crystals as celestite, or strontium sulfate, a pale blue mineral.

Some of the cave’s fragile crystals are up to 3 feet wide, and many are 8-18 inches long, weighing 200-300 pounds. Each crystal has 14 flat sides, or faces. This site is comprised solely of strontium sulfate crystals and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest geode in the world.

The cave was expanded as some of the crystals were initially harvested for the manufacture of fireworks–celestite burns with a bright red color. The crystals are too fragile for jewelry, but when ground fine they can be used for other commercial purposes, such as road flares.

After the start of the Prohibition, the many wineries in the area faced financial devastation. Hieneman was able to save his vineyard by opening the Crystal Cave to tourists. Because of his quick thinking, the Heineman is the oldest winery in Put-in-Bay, and countless visitors have had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of their unique cave discovery.

Visiting Crystal Cave

Put-in-Bay is an island in Lake Erie. Since there is no bridge, the area is accessed only by plane or boat. Two ferry services are available–the Miller Ferry and the Jet Express, which leave from Port Clinton for the about 20-minute trip.

One-way ferry prices run under $10 for adults, with decreasing rates for children 11 and under. It’s around $20 one-way for a vehicle. Taxis, bicycles, and golf carts are available for rental on the island.

Crystal Cave is open for viewing from April 20 through October 29, seven days a week. Touring hours on Monday through Saturday are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday’s hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The current cost for a cave tour is $12 for adults, $7 for ages 6-11, and free for children under six. The cave can accommodate about six visitors at a time. It’s a good idea to bring a sweater since the cave’s temperature is cool, around 50 degrees.

After visiting Crystal Cave, the island is lovely to walk on, and another point of interest, Perry’s Cave, is just across the street. Visit Put-in-Bay ’s event calendar to coordinate your trip with yearly events and interesting places to see.

👉Don’t have time to read the whole article? Get the best view of Put-in-Bay with this parasailing tour , or take a fun kayaking tour to see the island.

So maybe by now you’re asking yourself…

Where is Put-in-Bay?

put in bay marina

It’s located on Lake Erie, with the nearest large city being Sandusky, Ohio . You can take a road trip to Put-in-Bay (and even drive your car on the island via ferry). Alternatively, the largest commercial international airport is about 1.5 hours to the east in Cleveland.

Put-in-Bay is actually located on South Bass Island, and is just 5 miles south of the Canadian Border. To the north are Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Ballast Island, Rattlesnake Island and Sugar Island. Also nearby is Kelleys Island, which offers quite a bit to visitors to the area as well.

Quick note: you’ll see variations of Put-in-Bay’s name on this guide, such as Put in Bay and PIB. It’s official name is Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, but since locals and many others refer to it differently, you’ll see that reflected in this guide.

Map of things to do at Put-in-Bay

This map below can help visualize where this charming island is within the Great Lakes. Plan out your trip based on all the activities and attractions. This small island really packs a punch!

Okay, a few more details before we dive into the list of things to do in Put-in-Bay Ohio….

Places to stay Put-in-Bay

welcome to put-in-bay sign

One of the charming things about this quaint island is that you won’t find mega hotels here. It gives the island a small-town feel and allows tourism dollars to go to the locals.

Because of this, there’s really only a few Put-in-Bay hotel options, and some vacation rental properties. So be sure to book early!

  • The Commodore Resort
  • Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center
  • Anchor Inn Boutique Hotel
  • Put-in-Bay Waterfront Condos
  • Camp at the South Bass Island State Park

Pro tip: look for an accommodation site like Booking.com to search a mix of hotels and vacation rental properties to fit your needs and your budget!

Save money on travel with points: Check out the best credit card offers to save big money by using rewards points for flights and hotels. They’re so good; I regularly have 2-3 in my wallet and book most of my travel with points!

Ferries to Put in Bay

ferries to put in bay

There are 2 options to get to Put-in-Bay from the mainland. If you want to drive your car over to the island, opt for the first one!

Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay

Driving your vehicle or riding as a passenger, the Miller Ferry departs from the tip of Catawba Island, just to the northwest of Sandusky. It’s about a 20 minute ride to the ferry dock at Put-in-Bay. Kids (and adults…no judgement 😉) will enjoy sitting on the top level watching the mainland leave behind as you hit the open water of Lake Erie!

During peak summer months, the ferry runs every 1/2 hour. Check the schedule and book reservations in advance, especially if driving.

Jet Express to Put-in-Bay

Strictly a passenger ferry, the Jet Express is a faster way to get to the island of Put-in-Bay , depending on where you’re departing the mainland. With services from both Port Clinton and Sandusky, the Jet Express also travels to Kelleys Island and Cedar Point.

Family-friendly and group pricing is available. The Jet Express departs about every 45 minutes to an hour, based seasonally on demand. Check the schedule and book reservations here .

Tips for your Put in Bay vacation

put in bay downtown historical buildings

Here are a few things you may find helpful as you book your trip to this lovely Midwestern island.

  • This place comes alive during the summer! Many services shut down outside of the summer season and when it’s cold. I highly recommend a trip here between Memorial Day and Labor Day to see the best of the island.
  • Book your accommodations early. With limited options, they sell out quickly, especially in the peak of summer.
  • Consider a day trip (or 2!) If you can’t find a spot to stay on the island for your dates or in your budget, visiting for a day is a great option. Plus, it will allow some time to explore other areas like Sandusky, Port Clinton, Huron and more.
  • Be considerate to the locals. The ones providing service at restaurants and tours are too often overworked during the summertime. Be kind – always. 🥰
  • Have a back-up plan and be flexible. Considering there are only about 300 year-round residents, the locals do the best they can to provide stellar experiences for visitors. However, if you’re traveling anytime except a weekend during peak season, you can expect to see hours shift or places closed when they need to. Just be flexible – you’re on vacation!

Alright enough chatting already…let’s get to the list!

Best things to do in Put-in-Bay

PIB has so much to offer any travel style. Whether you’re into bar-hopping or you thrive in nature, you’re going to love Put-in-Bay! Starting off this list with one of my faves…

1. Kayaking Put-in-Bay

kayaking put in bay

For an active adventure, kayaking Lake Erie absolutely must be on your list! It’s a great way to see the pretty blue-green water and the Put-in-Bay shoreline.

The best place to rent kayaks and see the island is at the South Bass Island State Park. Right on the shore is a kayak rental shop, Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals . It’s super convenient to grab your gear and hit the lake!

Be sure to make reservations in advance. They also have stand up paddle boards and jet skis available.

Pro tip: take a dry bag and waterproof phone case when kayaking, as well as a water bottle.

This is the inexpensive waterproof phone sleeve I travel with and love it (I’ve even taken it underwater snorkeling in Turks and Caicos and it was fantastic!) When you’re on the kayak, strap the dry bag to the kayak in case you go overboard. There are also lockers on site for valuables if needed.

Location: 1523 Catawba Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

2. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

international peace memorial

Remember details from the War of 1812 from your history class in school? Yeah, neither did I until I visited the monument on Put-in-Bay. It was built to honor the brave men and women who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The memorial today stands as a symbol of peace between the USA, Canada and Great Britain.

It’s actually the world’s largest Greek Doric Column, and the 3rd tallest monument in the National Park Service, sitting at 352 feet above Lake Erie. Enter through the bottom part of the memorial and you’ll see the names of soldiers, as well as flags, plaques from White House endorsing the memorial and other memorabilia.

Highly recommend to take the elevator up to the observation deck. From there, you’ll see magnificent views of Lake Erie, Put-in-Bay and the nearby islands . The base of the memorial is free to enter, however there’s a $10 fee for the observation deck.

flags at Perry's victory and international peace memorail

Side note: if you have the annual America the Beautiful pass from the NPS, you’ll get in for free. I’ve purchased the annual pass over and over again, as it’s gained my family access to places like Glacier NP in Montana , Mt Rainier National Park in Washington, Arches NP in Utah , Padre Island National Seashore in Texas, Badlands NP in South Dakota and so many more!

Location: 93 Delaware Ave, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456

3. Rent a golf cart and poke around the island

golf carts on an island in ohio

Alright I gotta be honest: I love a casual vacation where the main mode of transportation is a golf cart. It just adds an element of fun, you know?

Anyway, Put-in-Bay is the perfect spot for carting the island, with many parking spots made specifically for golf carts. Plus the traffic goes golf cart pace most of the time since it’s so common!

Golf cart rental Put in Bay:

  • If you’re taking the Miller Ferry, rent a golf cart from E’s Put-in-Bay Golf Carts . It’s a short walk up the hill and to the right of the dock.
  • If you’re traveling to Put-in-Bay via the Jet Express and arrive in downtown, try AB Cart Rental . It’s just across the street from the Bus Depot.

4. Catch some live music: bars at Put in Bay

live music put in bay

This island really comes alive during the summer! Even in the middle of a weekday there’s plenty of live music for your enjoyment at the bars at Put in Bay. You’ll find most of it downtown.

Favorite spots to listen to live music in Put-in-Bay:

  • Mojito Bay Tiki Bar
  • The Round House Bar
  • T&J’s Smokehouse (Country Bar & Restaurant)
  • Beer Barrel Saloon

5. Drinks at Margaritas on the Rock

restaurants at put in bay margaritas on the rock

Get ready for all the island vibes at this beachy outdoor restaurant and bar! It’s located in the downtown area just down the street from Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

Margaritas on the Rock is a fun spot to escape the sun and have a margarita. Grab some chips and salsa because they’re seriously delicious…and always a good compliment to a fantastic margarita!

Location: 161 Delaware Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

6. Play Tiki Toss

tiki toss

While we’re one the topic of downtown bars, a really fun – but simple – game is tiki toss. Many of the outdoor bars have it – my girl friend and I played it at Margaritas on the Rock. It’s one of the most unique things to do in Put in Bay!

Anyhow, it’s a hook and ring toss game with points. Each player gets 3 turns to swing the ring. Gain 1 point if the ring hits the hook and ‘tings’. Two points if it makes the ‘ting’ sound twice. And 5 points if the sign lands on the hook.

Fun, right? So between doing all the other activities on this list of epic things to do in Put inBay, be sure to carve out 10-20 minutes (or more) to play Tiki Toss!

7. Put in Bay beach (one of my favorite things to do in Put-in-Bay, or anywhere else😉)

things to do in put-in-bay

Alright so you’re on an island on one of the Great Lakes. So you’re ready for the beach, right?

The best beach on Put in Bay is the one at South Bass Island State Park. It has the widest shore and is the most accessible. However the shoreline isn’t sand, it’s rocks so be prepared with water shoes if you’re wanting to swim.

Also, if you’re into island-hopping, consider heading over to Kelleys Island. With multiple beaches of varying sand and rock shorelines, visiting the beach is one of the best things to do on Kelleys Island.

8. Put-in-Bay shopping

nautical home decor

You won’t find big brands or large box stores on this island. Instead, you’ll find friendly, locally-owned shops with some really cool merchandise . Whether you’re picking up a souvenir for yourself or a loved one, grabbing clothing or home decor, there are some fun spots to shop!

Favorite shops Put-in-Bay:

  • Home Port Gifts & Accessories, 421 Langram Rd bldg a, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456
  • Put-in-Bay Carriage House, 160 Delaware Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

9. Crystal Cave Put in Bay

cave tour

This is going to BLOW. YOUR. MIND.

Going on this cave tour is one of the very top things to do in Put-in-Bay! On an island…on Lake Erie…in the Midwest…is this crazy cave of crystals. In fact, it’s the world’s largest celestine geode!

Located on the property of a winery (more about that in a bit), workers were digging a well for the winery when they ran into this incredible cave. With crystals from 8-18 inches long, they’re magnificent to look at! This is definitely one of the coolest things to do in Put-in-Bay!

This Put in Bay cave tour is a fun activity for all ages. The cave does have steps to enter so it’s not accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. For cave tour pricing and hours, visit the official Heineman’s website .

Location: 978 Catawba Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

10. Heineman’s Winery

Heinemans winery put-in-bay

Speaking of Heineman’s, a fun (and delicious) activity is taking a tour of Heineman’s Winery. It’s the oldest winery in Ohio, dating back to 1888.

Take a tour of the winery, sample various wines made right there on site and sit and enjoy the wine garden. If you’re visiting in peak season (May – September), take a tour any day of the week. Contact Heineman Winery for dining and tour hours during the off-season.

Fun fact: the grapes grown around Lake Erie are excellent quality due to great soil conditions and a long growing season. There are many wineries in the region to check out, especially if you’re spending time on mainland Ohio.

11. South Bass Island State Park

south bass island state park

Nature enthusiasts will love visiting the South Bass Island State Park , another one of the fun things to do in Put-in-Bay. For a truly off-the-grid vacation, you could choose South Bass Island camping at the state park.

The campgrounds are nestled on the edge of the cliff for the best views of Lake Erie! It has easy access to the beach for swimming and the fishing pier too. South Bass Island State Park also has these cool hybrid camping option called cabents which includes a kitchen, bathroom and shower.

Camping is allowed from May through mid-October. With limited space, be sure to make your reservation in advance.

Right next to the park entrance is a playground for young kids and volleyball courts for any age. And of course, this is where the best kayaking and Put in Bay beach is on the island. 😊

The rocky shoreline also creates an ideal swimming spot . Just be sure to use water shoes as the rocks can be slick! These are the water shoes I used at Put-in-Bay (and they’ve traveled all over the world with me, like the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado plus beachy getaways like Anna Maria Island, Florida and Aruba . Anyway, you’ll want water shoes here!

Location: 1523 Catawba Ave, South Bass Island, OH 43456

12. Toes in the sand and sit on swings at Mojito Bay

mojito bay put in bay ohio

The motto at Mojito Bay is “drink in hand, toes in sand!” And it seriously give you allll the beachy vibes! You’ll think you were transported to a tropical island in the Caribbean. Only, you’re at a tropical island in Ohio!

Featuring live music and a full line-up of mojitos, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your vacation. Another fun feature is the swings at the bar. Try it out for a truly care-free experience!

13. DeRivera Park, downtown Put in Bay

put-in-bay ohio

In the heart of downtown Put in Bay is the DeRivera Park. It’s a beautiful green space surrounded by the lively downtown restaurants, bars and shops on one side and the marina on the other.

Walk this area while you’re enjoying downtown and see the beautiful stone and cement wishing fountain and the gazebo (where you might even catch a wedding). The playground is perfect for young kids and if you’re staying on Put-in-Bay , you might even consider using the BBQ pits and having a picnic in the park.

DeRivera Park Put in Bay

Another cool sight at the park is a plaque with service members from the war of 1812 and a cannonball memorial.

Oh, and the DeRivera Park has a public restroom, including showers for boaters since it’s so close to the marina.

Location: 341 Bayview Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

14. Put-in-Bay Parasailing

parasailing

Get your adrenaline pumping with parasailing ! Soar in the sky above Lake Erie and get incredible views of Put-in-Bay that only few others have seen! In my opinion, this is one of the coolest things to do in Put in Bay!

Open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day, parasailing will be one of the most fun things you get to do during your time on Put-in-Bay!

I parasailed over Lake Erie from Cedar Point, but Put-in-Bay parasailing looks like a blast, too. I can say this is one cool way to see the lake.

Location: 341 Bayview Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456 (booth at the Boardwalk)

15. Take a trolley tour of the island

how to get around put in bay

Another great way to see Put-in-Bay is though a trolley tour. You don’t have to worry about where to park your car or golf cart if you just take the trolley! During peak season, the trolley runs every 30 minutes. Hop off when you want to and stay on when you don’t.

You’ll see about 80% of the island on this tour , and learn so much more about the history of Put-in-Bay and Lake Erie, too. Be sure to by tickets in advance if traveling during the busy season. Check schedule and prices here .

Location: 2071 Langram Rd, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456

16. Massie’s Cliffside Preserve

Massie cliffside preserve

Another beautiful spot on the island to soak in Mother Nature is on the northern side of the island. At the parking lot, take about a . 25 mile hike (on flat land so it’s more like a walk) through heavy trees to find the cliffs.

Grab a seat on a bench overlooking the cliffs with views of Middle Bass Island, or an epic sunset! Or walk down to the pier to listen to the waves crash agains the shore. It’s a great spot to find peace on a busy island.

Oh, and one more pro tip: keep your eyes peeled for non-venomous Lake Erie Watersnakes! Don’t let it prevent you from getting in the water though… I enjoyed that beach for an hour and didn’t see a single one.

Location: 139-147 Massie Dr, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

17. Helicopter tour of Put-in-Bay (one of the most unique things to do in Put-in-Bay)

Alright, I didn’t get to experience this myself but considering my experience and the fact that it was one of the most fun things to do in Kauai , I’d recommend it for Put-in-Bay.

The Put-in-Bay airport is small but mighty – you can book helicopter tours to see the island from the air , which is something most visitors don’t get to do! Choose the tour that allows you to see Cedar Point, Port Clinton and all around Put-in-Bay. Or upgrade to visit the other islands of Middle Bass and North Bass Islands too.

Location: 1494 Langram Rd, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

18. Gemstone mining, mazes, mini golf and more at Perry’s

things to do put in bay perry's cave

butterfly house

Alright this one was so impressive I had to give the Butterfly House at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center it’s own number on this list of things to do in Put-in-Bay. The Butterfly House is is a 4,000 square foot aviary where you can walk through and see hundreds of butterflies!

On site at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center, this butterfly house is for nature lovers of all ages. You’ll see varieties of Swallowtails from Africa and Asia, vivid blue butterflies from South America and my favorite – the Great Eggfly from Australia (just to name a few!)

20. Kimberly’s Carousel

Another perfect activity if you’re traveling with kids, it’s a must-do in downtown! And with an inexpensive price of just $1.50 per ride, it’s easy to say ‘yes’ to multiple rides.

Fun fact: this carousel has been fueling giggles for over 100 years! It’s been operating since 1917.

Side note: this is one of those situations where flexibility and ‘plan B’ may come into play. Kimberly’s Carousel wasn’t open during my time on PIB. If you’re traveling with kids, check back often to see if it’s operating.

Location: 160 Delaware Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

21. Play 9 holes at the Put in Bay golf course

golfing on an island Lake Erie

Located on the west end of Put-in-Bay, the Saunder’s Golf Course is the only golf course on the island! Golfing is free to those who stay in the Saunder’s Cottages, and affordable for other travelers.

At just $10 to play 9 holes and $5 for club rentals, this is a fun, inexpensive activity on Put-in-Bay . (Pricing accurate as of the time of publication.) I especially love that since it’s only 9 holes, you can have your golfing fun then get on with the rest of your day because it’s a short course!

Make reservations or contact Saunder’s for info here .

Location: 1495 Catawba Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

22. Dine at The Keys (one of my favorite restaurants at Put in Bay)

the keys restaurant sign

If you’re in the mood for a little live music – even during the weekday – then you must make it to The Keys! It’s a cute little area right on the water with ideal views to sit and relax, especially after a long day of activities or exploring.

Play Tiki Toss, grab a cold one and some delicious dinner. (My mouth is watering even thinking about the fish tacos….yum!)

Location: 227 Bayview Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

23. Key West North Buoy

the keys buoy

Visit buoy and grab a pic – at the Key West North! The Keys is Put-in-Bay’s northernmost bar, and to mark it there’s a play on the Southernmost Point Buoy found in Key West. Which, by the way, if you haven’t done a Miami to Key West road trip down highway 1, it absolutely needs to be on your bucket list!

Anyway, grab your pic for Instagram or your scrapbook and say you made it here.🤣

24. Paint Driftwood at The Keys (one of the most unique things to do in Put-in-Bay)

put in bay things to do with kids

A perfect activity for kids while parents relax a bit, for just $5 kids (or adults!) can leave their mark on Put-in-Bay. It’s the last activity at The Keys on this list of things to do in Put-in-Bay.

Grab paints and choose the perfect piece of driftwood at the bar, then get to work! Paint names, date visited or whatever else you choose!

25. Scheef’s East Point Preserve

scheeff east point nature preserve sign

If you’re looking for a hike on Put-in-Bay, this is the spot to do it! Hike through the woods and follow a loop around the northern tip of the island. It’s about .4 miles with several access points for the water and great views of the shoreline. More trail details here .

From the Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve, on a clear day you can see Middle Bass Island and Ballast Island.

Pro tip: watch for Poison Ivy while on the trails at Put-in-Bay. Leaves of 3, let it be!

Location: 1159-1107 Columbus Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

26. Graffiti Wall near Scheef’s East Point Preserve

graffiti wall don't give up the ship

A very artistic part of the island is located at a rock wall on the very northern coast of Put-in-Bay. The graffiti wall seems almost like a memorial for those who have passed away – either many years ago or fairly recent. There are many “RIP” messages with a name and date.

But perhaps the most prominent art on this sea wall is the painted phrase “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” You’ll see this all over the island, as this is an important part of the history within the Battle of Lake Erie. Those were famous words spoken by Master Commander Oliver Hazard Perry.

Ready more about the history of “Don’t Give Up the Ship” phrase here .

27. Dine at the Boardwalk Restaurant at Put in Bay

boardwalk restaurant

Overlooking the marina, the Boardwalk Restaurant is a multi-level establishment featuring cool views of the marina, happy hour (my personal fave) and live music. Grab a seat on the main deck or the upper deck for lunch or dinner. Also, if you like a frozen drink while on an island, this is the place to get one!

Try the lobster mac n cheese, blackened Mahi Mahi or the local’s favorite: fried Walleye and Perch platter. If you’re not into seafood, they also have sandwiches, burgers and salads. This is a fun spot to catch dinner before heading back to the mainland for the evening or before returning to your hotel or vacation rental .

28. Boat rental Put in Bay

boat rental put in bay

If you’re looking to hit the water on a boat, what a great way to experience Lake Erie! There’s not a whole lot of boat rental options, though, so prepare yourself for alternatives like jet skis or kayaking.

Places to rent a boat Put-in-Bay

  • Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals, 1523 Catawba Ave, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456
  • North Coast Parasail in Cedar Point (take a day rental to Put-in-Bay), Cedar Point Beach Boardwalk, Cedar Point, OH 44870

Pro tip: reserve your boat rental early! With limited inventory, they sell out quickly.

29. Rent bikes and explore the island

rent bikes put-in-bay

A fun way to see Put-in-Bay is on 2 wheels. The island is really flat so it’s easy to pedal your way around the island. Ride through downtown, out to Heineman’s Winery, Massie’s Cliffside Preserve, South Bass Island State Park, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial and more.

Places to rent bikes Put-in-Bay:

  • Island Bike Rental (perfect if you take the Miller Ferry), 2071 Langram Rd, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456
  • Boathouse Cart & Bike Rental (downtown location), 216 Hartford Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

30. Ice cream at DJ’s (one of my favorite things to do in Put-in-Bay)

ice cream cone

After all that biking, you’ll likely be hungry! Grab a delicious cone at DJ’s. It’s a local spot with affordable (and delicious) ice cream! And bonus – the outdoor covered pergola is adorable!

Location: Toledo Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

31. Dodge Woods Preserve

dodge woods preserve

Another fun, off-the-grid hiking spot on Put-in-Bay is Dodge Woods Preserve. Escape the sounds of downtown and take a walk through the trees. This preserve is perfect for birdwatching and wildflowers.

Fun fact: it’s on land that used to be used to grow grapes, so it’s one of the newer forests on the island.

Location: Langram Rd, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456 (at the intersection of Thompson Rd and Langram Rd)

32. Aquatic Visitor Center, Put-in-Bay

Another fun activity for kids in Put-in-Bay is the Aquatic Visitor Center. While they play a critical role in researching Lake Erie’s invasive species and protecting the ecosystem, they also have programs for kids.

Kids can fish from the pier at the Aquatic Visitor Center for free, including all the gear! If visiting Put-in-Bay during peak season between Memorial Day and Labor Day, be sure to visit the Aquatic Visitor Center on a Saturday . With programs like Bugs in the Water, Fun with fish and a live snake show, kids are sure to have a great time.

Location: 310 OH-357, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

33. Chocolate museum and cafe

the chocolate museum

Get your taste buds ready! Perhaps one of the most delicious things to do in Put-in-Bay is check out this chocolaty spot.

First, head on into the museum to see a bit about the history of chocolate. It reminds me of my time in San Ignacio, Belize , where I learned to make chocolate like the ancient Mayans.

Anyhow, inside the museum you’ll find vintage artifacts detailing the history of chocolate. Then, enjoy the deliciousness that is the Chocolate Cafe. From fudge to truffles, spicy Mexican hot chocolate and chocolate sold by the pound.

To finish off your experience, grab some famous Toft’s Ice Cream!

Location: 820 Catawba Ave, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

34. South Bass Island Lighthouse

south bass island lighthouse

Quite literally a light house, the South Bass Island Lighthouse is on the southern most tip of Put-in-Bay. It doesn’t operate anymore, but back in the day it was a powerful lighthouse, which provided guidance for ships passing by the island on the way to the mainland.

Visiting the lighthouse grounds is a fun throw-back in time. Just imagine yourself living there and getting up through the night to ensure the light was operating all night long~

From the grounds, you can also see Green Island in the distance. It’s an uninhabited island (humans anyway) and reserved space for wildlife refuge.

Pro tip: if you’re using Miller Ferry to get to and from the mainland, you could use this as your first stop of the day or your last, since it’s so close to the ferry.

Location: 2368 Langram Rd, Put-In-Bay, OH 43456

I feel like Ohio is an underrated/under visited place in the US (I don't actually know if that's true)! A perfect example - I hadn't even heard of Put-in-Bay, but there are lots of things I would be interested in doing, like the cave, trolley tour, graffiti wall, and Dodge Woods to name a few :) It also seems to have something for just about everyone, which is even better.

What a cool destination that I’ve never heard of! I haven’t ever thought of a tropical oasis in Ohio but wow it’s gorgeous! The water is beautiful and looks perfect for kayaking and swimming. I love vacation spots where the main way to get around is a golf cart, so fun. Between a winery, a cave tour and hanging out at the Mojito Bay Tiki Bar I’d be in heaven!

Categories Blog , Ohio , Small Town Guides , Travel Guides , United States

Put-in-Bay, Ohio, is a little Lake Erie island destination that packs a whole lot of fun. With nightlife and parties, outdoor activities, and family-friendly adventures, there’s something for every interest and every kind of traveler. After visiting South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay a few times, I’ve come up with a list of the best things to do in Put-in-Bay, Ohio.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you could likely do all of the things on this list within two or three days. Put-in-Bay isn’t that big of a place, and it feels even smaller when you drive around on a golf cart. There aren’t many cars on this island and the main form of transportation is the golf cart. It’s all part of the island’s charm.

Things to do in Put-in-Bay, Ohio

Wondering how long you should spend in Put-in-Bay? Well, you could make a day trip to Put-in-Bay, but that’s awfully ambitious and you’d miss out on some of the nightlife. A weekend in Put-in-Bay is a good amount of time, though three days in Put-in-Bay is best.

I know some people that spend a whole week in Put-in-Bay and more time to soak it all in. No matter how much time you have, this Put-in-Bay travel guide will help you make the most of your trip.

Getting to Put-in-Bay (and Getting Around)

Shannon and Lauren at the Miller Ferry

Even though Put-in-Bay is an island only accessible by boat (or plane, though this is not necessary), it’s really easy to get to Put-in-Bay. Leave your car on the mainland as people mostly get around by foot or by golf cart.

Travel to Put-in-Bay by ferry. There are a few different ferry services, although our favorite is the Miller Ferry. Leave your car at one of the free parking lots in Catawba Island, Ohio (which you can drive to) and take the Miller Ferry over to South Bass Island, aka Put-in-Bay.

Here’s our complete guide for getting to Put-in-Bay , which outlines all of the ferry services and transportation. Now, let’s talk about once you get over to the island. It’s time to rent a golf cart.

Best Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Rent a Golf Cart

Renting a Golf Cart in Put-in-Bay

Trust me, it’s a whole experience to rent a golf cart in Put-in-Bay! It’s one of the best things to do in Put-in-Bay. There are golf cart rental agencies all over the island.

We found it easiest to rent one directly from our hotel, Bayshore Resort, though I list several companies in our Put-in-Bay golf cart rental guide . You can pick up a golf cart in downtown Put-in-Bay, and there’s another golf cart rental company at the southern end of the island near the Miller Ferry dock.

Where to Stay in Put-in-Bay

Bayshore Resort

Now that you’ve sorted out transportation, it’s time to plan your hotel stay. Our favorite place to stay in Put-in-Bay is the Bayshore Resort . I’ve been there twice now and thoroughly enjoyed the facilities and convenience of this hotel.

While there are many accommodation options for all kinds of trips and travelers, everywhere from campsites to party hotels to family-friendly properties, Bayshore Resort is a laidback and relaxed place to stay that feels a little more mature. There’s a tiki bar on site, but you aren’t able to bring in your own alcohol in order to discourage wild parties.

It’s home to the only swimming pool on the island that isn’t public. Every other hotel’s swimming pool is public, meaning that you can hop from one to the next. At Bayshore Resort, only its guests can use its facilities, meaning that the pools are quieter and not crowded.

Bayshore Resort’s rooms might look a little dated, but every room comes with a balcony that looks out to the lake. All in all, I’ve really enjoyed my stay at the Bayshore Resort and recommend that you check it out, too. Book your stay here.

Now, if you’d like to take a look at all of the available accommodations, vacation rentals, hotels and resorts in Put-in-Bay, please use the handy map below. Enter your travel dates for more precise details. Click on each property to learn more and book your stay.

Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Go Bar Hopping

Mojito Bay

One main reason why visitors flock to Put-in-Bay is for the party vibes. After all, Put-in-Bay is known as the “Key West of the north” for good reason. There are all kinds of bars, patios, nightclubs and pubs serving up beer, cocktails and slushy drinks.

Mojito Bay

Take a walk down Delaware Street at Catawba Avenue in downtown Put-in-Bay to go bar hopping. Mojito Bay is one of my personal favorites. This is an outdoor tiki bar complete with sand and swings around a circular bar. They serve delicious frozen cocktails and also offer live music from time to time.

Another fun place to check out is the Beer Barrel Saloon. They boast having the world’s longest bar (405 feet, 10″ long), and this was even verified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Who said that swim up pool bars were only at tropical resorts in the Caribbean? MIST Pool Bar at the Commodore Resort has a swim up bar with handcrafted cocktails. It’s open to guests of the resort as well as visitors (21+). There are lounge chairs and cabanas to relax, and DJs spin tunes all weekend long. Every night, there’s an evening lights show, too.

Biergarten at the Boathouse celebrates Oktoberfest everyday! This beer garden features German food and beer, cocktails, and an outdoor patio. There are plenty of games to keep you entertained, like cornhole and ping pong.

Joe's Bar and Restaurant

Last, slightly off the beaten path, you’ll find Joe’s Bar and Restaurant. Considered to be Put-in-Bay’s “dive bar”, this unpretentious gastropub is at the far end of Catawba Avenue away from the main bar crawl. However, it’s worth venturing out for the delicious bar food, pub games, and a place to escape the crowds to a more laidback environment.

Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is a Doric column that represents the peace between the United States, Canada and Great Britain. It also honors those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812.

You’re welcome to visit the Rotunda at the base of the memorial for free anytime during opening hours. There are 123 names of the American soldiers, sailors, marines, and militiamen who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie carved into the walls in the Rotunda. The floor has a stone memorial to mark the final resting place for six officers (three American and three British).

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial

One of the best things to do in Put-in-Bay is travel up to the observation deck at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. The tours take place every 15 minutes (there’s an elevator and 37 steps to the top), and you should reserve a time slot in advance. It costs $10 to visit the observation deck at the time that I’m writing this article.

The views from the observation deck are spectacular. Look out to the neighboring islands between the United States and Canada, the world’s longest undefended border. You may even spot some birds like Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures. Be careful as it can get quite windy at the top.

Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Go Kayaking to Gibraltar Island

Put-in-Bay Kayaking

Kayaking in Put-in-Bay is another fun activity that we really enjoyed. Justin and I rented kayaks from the outfitter, Kayak the Bay. We rented kayaks on the spot and took them out on the water for a couple of hours, which was the perfect amount of time.

Kayaking in Put in Bay

There are some very cool rock formations around Gibraltar Island that are worth checking out. Paddle over to Gibraltar Island, an uninhabited island that you’re only able to tour on specific occasions with Ohio State University.

After kayaking around Gibraltar Island, we paddled along the edge of South Bass Island towards Benson Ford, the home built using the front of a ship. There are some pretty amazing views of this from the water. I’ll also describe how you can go on a tour of Benson Ford by land on rare occasions later in this article.

Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center

Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center lives up to its name – it’s a fun attraction that the whole family can enjoy. There are activities for kids and kids at heart, plus some really unique gems as well.

I’m going to highlight the two attractions that I’ve personally visited, Perry’s Cave and the mini putt course. Then, I’ll list some other reasons to visit Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center, too.

Perry’s Cave

Perry's Cave

Ohio is home to quite a few caves, and Perry’s Cave is one you need to visit if you love exploring underground. It’s a registered Ohio National Landmark. Descend 52 feet below the surface of Put-in-Bay on your tour of Perry’s Cave.

You can only visit Perry’s Cave on a guided tour, and tours last about 15 to 20 minutes. Justin and I loved learning more about the history of the cave, discovered by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry back in 1813. See stalactites and stalagmites up close. Remember to wear running shoes and bring a sweater as it’s always a bit cooler down in the cave.

War of 18 Holes Miniature Golf

There’s a miniature golf course at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center. Challenge your friends to a round of mini golf and learn some historic facts about the War of 1812 from informational signs as you play. Some interesting features on this mini golf course include a waterfall cave and a covered bridge.

Other Attractions at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center

Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center offers combo tickets so you can experience three or five attractions for a lower price. Some other activities and attractions include the butterfly house, gemstone mining, a rock wall, an antique car museum, and Fort aMaze’n. The antique car museum is free for everyone to visit, so you may as well take a look while you’re there (especially if you’re interested in old cars!).

Visit Put-in-Bay Wineries

Put-in-Bay is home to two wineries: Heineman’s Winery and Put-in-Bay Winery. Why not pay both of them a visit? A trip to the wineries is one of the top things to do in Put-in-Bay.

Heineman’s Winery has the distinction of being Ohio’s oldest family owned and operated winery since 1888. Gustav Heineman, an immigrant from Baden-Baden, Germany, took note that the conditions around the Lake Erie Islands were ideal for growing grapes.

They have their own red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, rose wine and dessert wine. Go for a wine tasting in their beautiful garden. While you’re there, visit the Crystal Cave (more on that in the next section!).

Located on the Doller House Estate, Put-in-Bay Winery is a newer winery on the island that opened in 2009. Take a tour of the house and estate, which also includes a wine tasting. The Put-in-Bay Winery has red wine, white wine, fruit wines, a pink wine, a sweet chocolate wine, rose wine, and sparkling wine.

The Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave in Put-in-Bay is the world’s largest geode. Descend 40 feet below the surface to view a cave covered in strontium sulfate, a blueish mineral called celestite. The original cave was much larger as some of the crystals were removed back in the day, but many remain that range from 8 to 18″ in size.

Fun fact: the Crystal Cave kept the family from failing financially during Prohibition. As Heineman’s Winery could no longer produce and sell wine, the family ran tours of the Crystal Cave and sold unfermented grape juice to stay afloat. Many other wineries at this time went out of business, and Heineman’s Winery was the only one to survive.

South Bass Island Lighthouse

South Bass Island Lighthouse

South Bass Island Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building itself doesn’t look like a typical lighthouse, which makes it all the more the reason to visit. The property is beautiful and it’s always free to visit.

Owned by the Ohio State University, the lighthouse itself is rarely open to visitors. However, there are three dates this summer when you can climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse itself. From the top, you can enjoy a pretty panoramic view of Put-in-Bay.

South Bass Island State Park

South Bass Island State Park

Did you know that there’s a state park in Put-in-Bay? One of the best things to do in Put-in-Bay is experience the South Bass Island State Park . This natural and protected space offers tranquility and peace from the hustle and bustle of downtown PIB.

There’s a small rocky beach here where you can go swimming. There’s also a campground where you can spend the night. In addition, other activities at the South Bass Island State Park include boating, picnicking and birdwatching (hundreds of bird species have been spotted here).

Tour the Benson Ford Ship House

Benson Ford

Benson Ford is one of the most unique houses you’ll ever see! Justin and I came across Benson Ford by accident when we were kayaking. While it may look as though a boat is sitting up on land, this old shipping vessel was cut in half and transformed into a house.

The Benson Ford Shiphouse isn’t only a Put-in-Bay landmark, it’s been featured in MTV Extreme Cribs, Home & Garden TV’s Extreme Homes, the Travel Channel, The British Daily Mirror and other publications. Benson Ford is occasionally open for tours, usually as a fundraising event. Be sure to check their website for any upcoming tour dates.

Things to Do in Put-in-Bay: Have a Beach Day

South Bass Island State Park

While I mentioned the rocky beach at South Bass Island State Park, there is a second beach in Put-in-Bay at the end of Delaware Avenue near Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. The one at the state park is a bit larger than the one in town.

I’d say that the state park beach is better for swimming and the downtown beach is better for sunbathing and lounging. Both have shorelines composed of small pebbles. You may be able to find sea glass along the South Bass Island State Park beach if you go looking for it.

Put-in-Bay isn’t exactly known as a beach destination and I’ve always stuck to swimming in the pools here. However, you can have a beach day if you don’t mind a rocky shoreline and some slightly cooler waters that could be quite refreshing on a hot day.

Kimberly’s Carousel

Kimberly's Carousel

Kimberly’s Carousel is a beloved landmark in downtown Put-in-Bay. It’s an original Allen Herschell Carousel built in North Tonawanda, New York in 1917. It is one of only 100 carousels with wooden horses remaining in the USA.

Joyful and inviting music drifts out into the streets, and the handcrafted carousel horses welcome you to go for a spin. For the young and the young at heart, take a ride on the Put-in-Bay Carousel to experience some of the island’s best living history.

These Stunning Caribbean Caves Were Just Named One of the World’s Top Attractions by Tripadvisor

The Cayman Crystal Caves formed millions of years ago.

The Cayman Islands have long lured visitors to its luxurious beaches and tropical forests. But in recent years, travelers have started going underground — literally — to the Cayman Crystal Caves , which was just named one of the top attractions in the world in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards , announced this week.

Located on the Grand Cayman Island’s Northside, the attraction opened in 2016, with 1.5-hour guided tours leading visitors through a tropical forest and three caves. Formed millions of years ago, the caves were once underwater, as proven by fossilized shells and other signs of sea life. The slow work of Mother Nature, carving out the caves drip-by-drip with rainwater on the limestone has created stunning crystal-like stalagmites and stalagtites, giving the caverns an otherworldly feel.

The tour goes through an open-ceiling cave, a root one, and perhaps the most stunning, a lake cave, illuminated with lights . There’s also a chance to spot balsam trees, air plants, and even parrots and bats in the surrounding forests. For an even more unique adventure, there's also the Dusk to Dark Evening Bat Tour , where bats fly directly over your head and away into the sunset.

While the caves had long been there, it wasn’t until the late businessman Christian Sorensen came to the area in the 1990s to survey the caves that the idea of opening them up to the public began. After all, his father Ole Sorensen had developed Barbados’ Harrison’s Cave, and the younger Sorensen thought he might be able to recreate its success in the Cayman Islands.

According to local reports, he spent 1997 to 2011 buying land and building infrastructure for the Cayman Crystal Caves. He finally began work on the exhibit in 2012 and opened it to the public in March 2016.

Now amassing more than 2,700 five-star reviews on Tripadvisor, the Cayman Crystal Caves are the only Caribbean site to make the top 25 list, earning the No. 5 spot, after far more well-known attractions: New York City's Empire State Building in first , Paris' Eiffel Tower in second, Amsterdam's Anne Frank House in third, and Barcelona's Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in fourth.

“This attraction was the highlight of our vacation,” one recent visitor wrote on Tripadvisor, also commenting on the tour guide’s knowledge mixed with a sense of humor. “The three caves were breathtaking and I would highly recommend this attraction if you're spending time on the island!”

The Sports Report: Don’t direct your anger and disappointment toward Bronny James

Lakers draft picks Dalton Knecht and Bronny James.

From Bill Plaschke : He seems so small. He seems so young.

Sitting on a stage with two seasoned NBA types and a veteran collegian Tuesday, Bronny James looked like a kid sitting at the adults’ table.

The Lakers’ JJ Redick , Rob Pelinka and Dalton Knecht answered questions about basketball. Bronny answered questions about his father.

Who happened to be standing in the back.

“For sure, an amplified amount of pressure,” the 19-year-old son of LeBron James said. “I’ve already seen it on social media ... and the internet ... talking about that I might not deserve an opportunity. But I’ve been dealing with stuff like this my whole life. So it’s nothing different.”

He sighed. “But it’s more amplified, for sure. But I’ll get through it.”

Imagine attending your first NBA news conference and already talking about enduring the pressure. How fair is that? But that is the position in which LeBron and the Lakers have put this young man by drafting him 55th when nobody else was going to take him, making him a pro when he should have stayed in college.

Threw him to the wolves and now he must fend for himself, and it might not be pretty.

From Dan Woike : LeBron James stood off stage, back in the shadows behind the assembled reporters there to see the two newest Lakers , one of whom happens to be his eldest son.

Bronny James , the team’s second-round draft pick sat with first-rounder Dalton Knecht to his right and general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick to his left.

Tuesday marked a big day inside the Lakers’ facility in El Segundo, the organization celebrating its hope for the future while one of the biggest factors in its present watched from the back.

In Knecht, the Lakers capitalized on an unexpected draft slide to take the All-American scorer with the No. 17 pick. And in Bronny James, the Lakers made the most discussed No. 55 pick in league history, fueling days of debate about nepotism and pressure.

From Broderick Turner : The Clippers have interest in signing free-agent forward Miles Bridges, according to people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly.

It probably would take a sign-and-trade deal in which the Clippers send a draft pick to Charlotte for Bridges, who averaged 21 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 46.2% from the field last season for the Hornets. Players who have been discussed for a possible deal include sixth man Norman Powell, who makes $19.2 million, and swingman Terance Mann, who makes $11.5 million.

Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard impresses during workout in front of Team USA leaders

From Jack Harris : The Arizona Diamondbacks had a base open.

They decided to pitch to Freddie Freeman anyway.

In the Dodgers’ come-from-behind, walk-off 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night, Freeman provided the pivotal moment in a game-winning two-run rally in the ninth, hammering a two-strike double to tie the score before scoring the winning run on Teoscar Hernández’s game-ending single an at-bat later.

It was the kind of late-game sequence the Dodgers have mastered of late — with the home team thrilling a sold-out Chavez Ravine crowd for their 18th comeback win of the season.

For most of the night, the two teams traded blows in a back-and-forth contest.

The Dodgers took an early two-run lead. Bobby Miller avoided implosion in a two-run fourth inning. Then, after a monstrous two-run blast from Shohei Ohtani gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning, the club’s bullpen gave up runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings to allow the Diamondbacks to surge back in front.

Lawrence Butler and Brent Rooker hit home runs, Mitch Spence gave up one hit over 5 1/3 innings, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Angels 7-5 on Tuesday night.

Brett Harris added a two-run double for Oakland, which had lost seven of its previous eight games and 17 of 21.

Nolan Schanuel had two hits and four RBIs for the Angels, who had won six of their previous seven games.

From Marissa Kraus : Despite holding a 12-point lead after three quarters and a season-best night by Stephanie Talbot, the short-handed Sparks couldn’t hold off the Washington Mystics in the final minutes Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena. The Sparks lost 82-80, extending their losing streak to eight games.

The night was highlighted by the announcement that Sparks forward Dearica Hamby was named to the WNBA All-Star roster for the third time. The WNBA All-Star game against the U.S. Olympic team will be held at Footprint Center in Phoenix on July 20.

During her second start of the season, Talbot put up a career-high 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Aari McDonald also scored 17 points, her second most of the season, and delivered six assists. The Sparks shot 28 for 60 from the field while the Mystics shot 23 for 67. Myisha Hines-Allen led Washington with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Julie Vanloo contributed 15 points.

From Kevin Baxter : Walt Disney Co. chief executive Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay, dean of the USC Annenberg School of Journalism, are close to completing a deal that would see them invest $250 million in Angel City FC, nearly doubling the value of the most valuable women’s sports franchise in the world.

Dylan Byers, of the news website Puck, was first to report on the negotiations, were which confirmed to The Times by two people with knowledge of the investment, but who are not authorized to speak about it on the record. The transaction could be completed quickly, with Bay and Iger replacing Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian as the team’s controlling shareholder.

Ohanian was also the team’s representative on the NWSL Board of Governors. It was not immediately clear Tuesday who would assume that role.

U.S. MEN’S SOCCER

From Kevin Baxter : Uh oh.

In less than two years the World Cup is coming back to the U.S. and we’re not ready. Not even close.

That was obvious Monday, when a 1-0 loss to Uruguay knocked the U.S. out of the Copa América after three games. It was the first time in 20 global or continental tournaments that the national team has gone out in the group stage and the first time a Copa América host had failed to advance.

Moving the Copa América to the U.S. was meant to be a dress rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S. The plan was to expose problems with the stadiums , the training facilities, transportation and infrastructure.

What was exposed instead were the failures of the national team.

“Bitterly disappointed with the results. We know we’re capable of more, and in this tournament we didn’t show it,” coach Gregg Berhalter said.

Asked if he’s still the right man to lead the team, the long-embattled coach answered yes. That may not be the right answer though. A couple of hours later Matt Crocker, U.S. Soccer’s sporting director, issued a statement that was far from a show of support.

Amid rising MLS popularity, should its teams gamble on bigger stadiums?
