“The people’s pools”
Landmannalaugar is a beautiful and unique place. It has a rare beauty not found anywhere else. Colorful Rhyolite, a volcanic type of rock is common in the area and it brings varying colors to the land. You see mountains in the area with hints of green, gold, yellow, pink and red which constantly change as the sun rays pass over it. It is like no other place you have ever been to and is often described as feeling like you have landed on another world. It really is an experience worth to be lived at least once in your lifetime.
Landmannalaugar also has Geothermal water which the name derives from it means “ The people’s pools.” So, do not forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel with you. It’s fabulous to relax in the natural pools especially after a long hike.
Landmannalaugar has a good campsite and it is very popular to hike in the area, short or long hikes can be had. The most famous is Laugavegur hiking trail and it takes a few days to hike it. You can begin the hike either in Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk . During summer, we have two buses every day, one from Reykjavík to Þórsmörk and back, the other one from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar and back. See the exact departure times in the timetables below. The Summer season is from June 15 th to September 15 th .
Landmannalaugar is one of the most cherished nature spots in Iceland and is only open during the summer season. You must travel in a jeep to get there and preferably have experience of bad roads as you have to cross rivers and drive on rocky highland roads. So, if you are unsure and don’t want to worry the safest way to travel there is with the Thule Travel Hikers Bus. Our drivers are very experienced, and our buses are in top new condition.

Great tour! The guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. He kept us safe on a really treacherous driving day
Alexandra Frank
We had such a great time! The guides were like walking super informative, sharing cool facts about glaciers and local stories. Even though the ice cave was flooded with water that day, the guides turned it into an epic adventure. We went sledding down the glacier, which was a blast, and they also surprised us with traditional Icelandic donuts and hot drinks. The monster truck was a beast, cruising through the icy terrain like a champ. It was a great experience for me and my parents. Totally recommend it!
Cher Coatney
The guides were incredible! They were story tellers, jokesters, informative, helpful, adventurous, positive, safety conscious and always prompt. The tours in the package were amazing! The whole tour was exciting and uplifting! The positive and grateful attitude of the Icelandic people was a joy. Thank you for this wonderful experience!
Amazing trip! There were 4 couples on the Jeep. The driver lady was very experienced, kind, and down to earth. The orange trail hike at the Landmannalaugar took us little bit over an hour. The temperature there was lower and it can be slippery with the snow covering the trail in October, but we were able to make it with good hiking shoes and shell jackets. So keep in mind if you want to go in less popular seasons. The scenery along the way definitely worth it.
Travelling the Highlands in Iceland
Iceland is a land of beauty, with rugged landscapes and natural wonders. The country's coastal areas are renowned for their stunning vistas and attractions like the Golden Circle sightseeing route and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.
However, the Highlands offer a glimpse into the untouched wilderness of this Nordic island nation. Highlands tours in Iceland allow adventurers to explore one of the most remote regions in Iceland.
In the country's center, the Icelandic Highlands have vast expanses of lava fields, glaciers, geothermal hot springs, and wild rivers. This region remains uninhabited mainly and inaccessible for most of the year due to harsh weather conditions.
However, during the summer months, when the snow and ice recede, the Highlands come alive with color, revealing an otherworldly landscape.
One of the most popular routes for Highlands tours is the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, which translates to "Behind the Mountains."
Here, visitors can embark on multi-day treks, 4x4 adventures, and guided tours to witness some of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders, including the Landmannalaugar geothermal area, the cascading waterfalls of Haifoss and Hjalparfoss, and the Thorsmork valley.
As you traverse the Highlands, you'll encounter geothermal hot springs where you can take a soothing dip, witness the power of glacial rivers carving through volcanic terrain, and marvel at the hues of rhyolite mountains.
The Highlands are also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, with opportunities to spot Arctic foxes, reindeer, and various bird species.
Venturing into the Highlands requires careful planning and preparation, as the region's weather can be unpredictable and the terrain challenging.
Many travelers opt to join organized tours led by experienced guides who can navigate the rugged terrain and provide insight into this unique landscape's geology, history, and folklore.
Highlands tours in Iceland offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore a remote wilderness. Whether you're a nature lover, a photographer, or an adventurer, the Icelandic Highlands promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of the land of fire and ice.

Debate Erupts Over Tour Bus Plowing Through Bison Jam In Yellowstone
Photos of a Bluestar tour bus pushing past a bison jam in Yellowstone National Park have sparked a heated debate over whether drivers can plow through the animals or should just wait for wildlife to get out of the way.
April 29, 2024 5 min read
Bison don’t follow bus schedules, but a Sunday post to the popular Facebook page Yellowstone National Park: Invasion of the Idiots has sparked a lively debate about driving etiquette through the park’s famous bison jams.
Photos with the post show a tour bus filing out of a line of vehicles stopped for bison on the road and slowly pushing through and herding the animals off the road as it moves forward.
The driver’s action has people arguing over the proper procedures in the sticky situation of bison jams.
Rhae Cicale was driving through Yellowstone when she encountered a classic Yellowstone bison jam, as a small herd of bison loitered on a two-lane road. Traffic was stopped in both directions as most everyone patiently waited for the bison to move along.
That’s when a Bluestar tour bus crossed the double yellow line, overtook the line of vehicles ahead of it and nudged its way through the bison. The bison promptly moved off the road, and the bus continued onward.
“I’m reporting this driver and bus company," Cicale posted when she shared the photos. “We were all waiting for bison and this imbecile went on the wrong side of the road and forced the herd off the road. One of the bison jumped to get out of his way.”
The reaction to Cicale’s photos was mixed. That's a rarity in a group like Yellowstone National Park: Invasion of the Idiots, which is usually universal in its disdain for the actions posted in its feed.
Kneejerk Reaction?
Some people shared Cicale’s frustration over the bus driver’s impatience while others thought it was perfectly acceptable and compared driving through a herd of wild bison to navigating around a herd of domestic cattle.
“Those of us that have spent loads of time in the park know how to navigate through them,” said Patricia Nasby of Billings, Montana. “The smart ones know there's zero reason to wait. Those creatures will tie up traffic for hours! All the cars idling is bad for the atmosphere, (so) we're doing the planet a favor by moving through!”
Duane Wettstein, a semitruck and tour bus driver from Salt Lake City, Utah, also weighed in. In his perspective, the Bluestar bus driver was doing precisely what he should have done.
“We are instructed to do this,” he said about how to navigate around wildlife in the road. The goal is “to not add to the congestion.”
Several other people added that they've seen Yellowstone rangers execute the same maneuver in bison jams, albeit with vehicles considerably smaller than a 26.5-ton Prevost bus.
No Penalty For Interference?
There isn’t an official Yellowstone policy that specifically addresses how, or if, drivers should proceed through bear or bison jams. Seems the only thing that’s crystal clear is to not get out and approach the wildlife as photo opportunities.
The only rule posted on the National Park Service’s Yellowstone website is to “stay in your vehicle if you encounter a wildlife jam” and never park on the road or block traffic to observe wildlife.
If visitors outside their vehicles stay 25 yards away while they observe, they’re free to do so as long as they fully pull off the road. Of course, anyone closer than that is required to stay in their vehicles for their own safety.
Alvin Heggie owns local tour company Cody Shuttle and said he encounters bison jams all the time, but he never drives through them.
“That's how I interpret park policy,” he said. “Give the wildlife all the space they need. You need to stop and let the bison do their thing.”
You Should Just Wait
Heggie believes that visitors should take every precaution to minimize their impact on Yellowstone's natural environment. That includes waiting for bison to leave the road before traveling again, however long that takes.
“As commercial use authorization holders, we're obligated to not only follow the rules but, in certain circumstances, help others follow the rules,” he said. “We're not supposed to impede, force or otherwise influence wildlife behavior in any way, shape or form.”
Many websites promoting Yellowstone tourism encourage visitors to budget extra travel time, at least 30 minutes, in case of a bison jam. But tour bus drivers have schedules to keep, so it’s likely the driver of the Bluestar bus took whatever action they deemed necessary to keep traffic moving and finish their route.
Heggie hopes other tour buses don’t follow the Bluestar example. Bison jams, as long and frustrating as they can be, are part of the authentic Yellowstone experience and should be respected as such.
“While we're in the park, we can observe wildlife, but they’re supposed to have priority,” he said. “It's their home, and we’re there to visit. I don't care if there are 100 cars in front of you. Just wait.”

50 walk away from burning double-decker bus on I-595 in Davie
By Mauricio Maldonado , Nikiya Carrero
Updated on: April 26, 2024 / 11:15 PM EDT / CBS Miami
MIAMI - About 50 people are lucky to be alive Friday afternoon after the double-decker bus they were in caught fire, shutting down the westbound lanes of I-595 in Davie.
It happened before 3 p.m. near Nob Hill Road.
CBS News Miami's Nikiya Carrero interviewed two of the tourists who say they were headed to the Everglades, but they never made it.
Edward McElduff, visiting from the UK, said "It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I started thinking about my fiancé and my wedding that I got coming up. Sort of started accepting defeat." McElduff, along with his colleagues, decided to take a break from the World Finance Forum and take a trip to see alligators when the unimaginable happened.
Lewis Chandler, also visiting from the UK, said "It's just one of those things that would never happen or ever happen to you and then all of sudden you find yourself running off a bus on the freeway."
The group got on the bus at 305 Lincoln Road on South Beach where Miami Tours is located.
About 40 minutes into the drive, they noticed smoke.
"Then, about 10 minutes later, we noticed we were being pulled over on the freeway. And it was at that moment we noticed something more serious was going on."
The group said the driver did not give them any instructions, so they took matters into their own hands.
Calmly, exiting one by one, but the door on the bus was against the guard on the shoulder.
"We had been pulled over so far that you had to climb over the shoulder to get out of the door," said Chandler.
Both men said they were two unsung heroes who assisted the entire group.
No injuries were reported.
Images from Chopper 4 showed a charred skeleton of a chartered bus on the emergency lane of an empty highway.
It is not clear what may have started the fire.
The bus was eventually towed away from the scene, as lanes started to reopen.
Traffic was affected for miles.
