Fort Knox offers various outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and golfing. The post also has numerous parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities.

Unfortunately, the Fort Knox Bullion Depository is closed to the public and access is restricted to authorized personnel only. However, visitors can still see the exterior of the facility and take pictures in front of the massive granite walls.

Location: On 31W just south of the U.S. 60 intersection. The museum is actually on Fort Knox in Keyes Park off Chaffee Avenue. Visitors can reach the museum directly through the public parking off 31W. Alternatively, visitors may enter the installation through Brandenburg Station Road, Bouillon, or Wilson Road Gate and ask the guards for directions to the museum. NO WEAPONS ARE PERMITTED ON POST and the gate guards will not allow you to enter if you have a weapon with you. All gates require to show proper identification (required of everybody in vehicle over the age of 16), vehicle registration, and valid driver’s license. The vehicle is subject to search.

Handicapped Accessibility: Visitors must enter through one of the three gates (Brandenburg Station Road, Bouillon, or Wilson Road.) to utilize the handicapped parking spots immediately outside the museum door or park in the closer on post parking lot and avoid having to pass through the turnstiles of the outer public parking lot. This is advised for visitors in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available in the museum on request.

Weekdays are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekends and Holidays (October – April) 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekends and Holidays (May – September) 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed: Easter, Thanksgiving, December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1.

Patton Museum is also closed when Fort Knox is closed due to inclement weather. Museum is open to the general public and admission is free.

Best attractions to see while visiting Fort Knox

If you’re heading to the Holiday Inn Express® Newgarden Inn on Fort Knox and are looking for some activities to do on your trip solo or with your family, keep reading! Full of military history, and just a short drive from Louisville, there is plenty to do to fill your days.

General George Patton Museum of Leadership

Open Tuesday-Sunday, 9:00am to 4:30pm

This museum was created to honor the prolific military career of General George Patton as well as showcase memorabilia from his childhood in California, to his participation in the 1912 Olympic Games.

Not only does the museum honor General Patton, but also has an exhibit dedicated to those starting their military careers in the ROTC. The items displayed help to showcase some of the ways that General Patton’s legacy of leadership continues to motivate and inspire Americans to this day. Admission is free to the public.

Tioga Falls Trail

Open daily during daylight hours

This hiking trail is a combination of natural beauty and nineteenth century history, ending in one of the only waterfalls in this area of Kentucky. Throughout the hike, you’ll see old buildings that were once part of Fort Knox, like guardhouses, outposts, and railroad stations. The trail takes about 2 hours to complete, and does have a few steep climbs, so use caution and proper hiking gear.

On occasion the trails are closed to the public as large military exercises from Fort Knox take place in the area.

Swope Museum

Open Monday-Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm

Are you looking for a piece of automotive American history? Swope Cars of YesterYear showcases 60+ cars from the 1900’s to the 1960’s, all restored to museum quality. From the 1914 Model T and the 1925 Pierce Arrow to classics like the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and the 1956 Thunderbird, there’s something for every car enthusiast to enjoy.

The museum allows guests to admire the progression of these cars overtime, and admission is free to the public.

Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum

Open Monday-Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm

About a 30 minute drive from Fort Knox is the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum, which showcases the rich history surrounding the sport of baseball. “From the forest to the field, you'll follow the timber that's turned into hard hitting history,” as well as be able to see fascinating memorabilia and interactive exhibits.

Start with the factory tour, where you’ll see every part of the process that goes into turning a piece of wood into an official MLB bat. Also featured in the museum is the Signature Wall, featuring players who signed contracts with Louisville Slugger, and the exhibit showcasing Slugger players that went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The museum recommends purchasing advance tickets as the Factory Tour can sell out during peak times.

Fort Knox is a U.S. Army post in the Kentucky Derby Region .

Fort Knox is internationally known for the United States Bullion Depository, which stores a large portion of gold and other valuable items in the United States' possession. It is estimated to hold 2.3% of all gold refined in human history.

Film producer Albert Broccoli managed to get permission to use the exterior of Fort Knox as a location for the James Bond film Goldfinger , though they were restricted to a minimum of 3000 ft (900 m) in the airspace above it for the aerial scenes. The interior scenes were a film set at Pinewood Studios.

Get in [ edit ]

US 31W runs roughly north/south next to Fort Knox; drivers may access the Brandenburg Station Road, Chaffee Avenue, and Wilson Road Gates, as they travel north to south, respectively. 31W connects Elizabethtown 15 minutes to the South, and Louisville about 60 minutes to the north. Further east runs I65, also connecting Elizabethtown and Louisville. KY 313, running east/west, brings in traffic from I-65 to the east, via exit 102.

Get around [ edit ]

Not much effort seems to have been made to make navigating around post easy; most signs for buildings use difficult-to-read "military speak" (for example, the Leader's Club sign is marked: "Directorate Of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation", and in relatively tiny text at the bottom: Leader's Club). However, almost every street intersection is clearly labeled, though the existing signs differ for some roads from the names given by Google Maps.

The Fort Knox MWR Guidebook (available at several locations around post) has probably the best map of post available to the average visitor.

• Saunders Spring Nature Preserve , 100 Saunders Spring Ln, Radcliff. Not really military-related, but it sits side by side with Fort Knox and is pretty charming with pioneer cabins and waterfalls and biking trails. Daily 7:30AM-6PM.

Four gymnasiums (Otto, Smith, Natcher and Gammon), an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool (Anderson) and several large athletic fields are available at various locations around post.

Most locations and activities are fairly typical for a large military post; including an outdoor recreational area (Camp Carlson Army Travel Camp), Shooting Club (French Range), bowling alley (Houston Bowling Center), and golf course (Lindsey Golf Course).

There are a few restaurants near the Post Exchange such as a Burger King, Popeyes, Qdoba and Subway.

Drink [ edit ]

Rocker II and the Leader's Club have full bars on post. Rocker II offers wide screen TV's, 4 pool tables and dart boards, and various video games to provide weekend diversions. The Leader's Club features Fiddler's Green Bar and Lounge, as well as the Bullion Room Restaurant.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are 600 transient lodging spaces at 6 locations around post are available for soldiers on TDY assignment. Separate spaces are also available for up to 76 Permanent Party Geographical Bachelors (GBQ). Transient lodging spaces range from dormitory style to efficiency apartments, but most will feature queen-sized beds, basic kitchen facilities with microwave and refrigerator (and sometimes stove), as well as cable TV and high-speed internet connections (wired).

For civilians, look for accommodation in nearby Radcliff, Brandenburg or Elizabethtown .

Calls between landline phones on the post can still be made by dialing the last five digits. However, all calls made to off-post numbers, whether long-distance or not, require 10-digit dialing—despite the fact that the area code 502 that serves the post has not yet been subject to an overlay plan (i.e., a second area code that covers the same geographic area).

This is because the local calling area for Fort Knox includes areas outside the 502 area code that are served by an overlay complex of two area codes, 270 and 364. Included in the 270/364 overlay and the local calling area are the cities of Radcliff, directly adjacent to the main gate, and Elizabethtown , a short distance to the south. Visitors who are staying in those cities must dial all 10 digits for local or in-state calls, omitting just the leading +1 from a local landline call.

Signage on many established businesses in Radcliff or Elizabethtown may still display the original seven-digit numbers; dial 270 before these if no area code is indicated.

Fort Knox, Maine's largest historic fort, features stunning military architecture and master granite craftsmanship. Constructed between 1844 and 1864 by master craftsmen and never fully completed, this is an unaltered example of a large mid-19th century granite coastal fortification. It is also New England's finest unmodified specimen of military architecture of the period.

The fort was strategically located on the narrows of the Penobscot River to protect the river valley from naval attack. Although it never saw combat, Fort Knox was garrisoned during the Civil and Spanish American Wars.

Fort Knox bears the distinction of being Maine's first granite fort. About 500 troops from Connecticut were stationed here during the Spanish-American War. They lived outside the main fort structure in large tents. Today, visitors can stroll the grounds of this great fort and learn about the rich history of the troops who served to protect American interests during the 1800s.

The Waldo-Hancock Bridge has been replaced by the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. The observatory and fort are now a combined visitor attraction.

Come explore the Fort and discover this treasure of Maine and United States History.

Fort Knox itself is open May 1 - October 31, from 9am to 6pm (9am to 7pm from July 1 to August 31). The observatory closes one hour before the fort. The grounds are open year round from 9am until sunset for your visiting pleasure. The newly constructed Penobscot Narrows Bridge boasts an observation tower, rising 420’ above sea level, which may only be reached through the Fort. The observation tower provides a breathtaking view of the Penobscot River Valley, and is the only observatory like it in the Western Hemisphere!

The main fort building measures 252 by 146 feet. The fort's two levels contain mounts for 64 cannons. Four batteries, with a total of 69 cannons, cover lines of defense. Visitors are welcome to explore the fort's passageways and many rooms. The fort also features two complete Rodman cannons. Guided tours are available daily during the summer season.

7 Top Tips for a Fort Knox Maine Day Trip From the Mid-Coast

There are certainly plenty of things to do in Mid-Coast Maine , but what if you want to explore more of what Maine has to offer? If you’re in the Mid-Coast and are a history buff, we recommend a day trip to Fort Knox Maine and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory.

A Fort Knox Maine Overview & History

The Fort Knox State Historic Site at Fort Knox State Park is one of the best-preserved examples of a military fortification built in the mid-19th century. It’s situated in Prospect Maine on the west bank of the Penobscot River across from Bucksport and has a lot of distinctive architectural features and a rich history.

Chief Engineer Joseph Totton designed Fort Knox Maine with the help of several other engineers between 1844 and 1869. The team brought master granite craftsmanship to the design, which you can still revel in today.

The main building is 146 feet by 252 feet, making it the largest fort in Maine. It’s also the first granite fort built in Maine and can house more than 130 cannons.

The History

When Fort Knox Maine was built, the state was involved in several border-related conflicts with British Canada. For instance, the area between Bangor and Castine was invaded, so the British occupied the area during the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

The purpose of the fort was to protect the Penobscot River Valley from a potential British naval attack. It was the first in the country to be named after Major General Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War for the United States.

From 1863 to 1866 (during the fort construction), less than 50 Civil War troops were garrisoned at Fort Knox Maine. Most of them were volunteers in training before going on active duty. In 1898, about 500 troops set up around the fort for the Spanish-American War, but they were never sent into combat.

Events at Fort Knox Maine

Now, the Fort Knox historic site is open to visitors who are interested in the military architecture and fascinating history of this National Historic Landmark. Along with walking around the fort and reading posts about it, it’s possible to join one of the few special events held at the site.

Shakespeare Under the Stars

During the summer, a theatre group performs Shakespeare for guests. In 2021, Ten Bucks Theatre celebrated 11 years of performing at Fort Knox Maine. While the performers take to the stage, viewers rest on blankets and in camp chairs.

Ghosts of Fort Knox Guided Tour

More than just a tour, this thrilling event includes a guided tour by professional ghost hunters — the 207 Paranormal Ghost Trackers. You can help them investigate dark passages and rooms throughout the fort in search of evidence to explain the unexplained.

The professionals use state-of-the-art techniques and equipment — such as night-vision, high-frequency sound recording, and motion-detection technology. Believers and skeptics alike are invited to be part of the team.

Fort Knox Ghost Camp

If you’re interested in spending the night, the 207 Paranormal Ghost Trackers organize a Fort Knox Ghost Camp. You just need sleeping bags and tents to join the overnight paranormal investigation into the legendary ghosts rumored to dwell at the historic fort.

The Paranormal Gathering

Maybe you would prefer to just listen to ghost stories from experts after the Fort Knox entrance closes for the day. During August, the fort becomes a chilling backdrop for such campfire tales.

This Paranormal Gathering event features personal paranormal experiences and true accounts from paranormal experts of all kinds from across Maine. You’re welcome to bring a blanket or camp chair to sit around one of several fire pits in the Parade Field open area within the fort.

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory

Part of the Fort Knox Maine experience, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory is a majestic sight. At 140 feet above the Penobscot River during high tide, the cable-stayed bridge took about three years to build and was opened to traffic at the end of 2006.

About five months later, the Penobscot Narrows Observatory opened to visitors. It’s the tallest public bridge observatory in the world, standing 420 feet (taller than the Statue of Liberty). You ride the fastest elevator in Maine to reach the observation tower for a spectacular, panoramic view.

In fact, you can see a lot of Maine’s countryside and western mountains in the distance from the top — not to mention Fort Knox Maine. On the campus, you can read interpretive panels about the region’s history and natural wildlife, as well as make use of picnic tables and grills.

Fort Knox Info | Hours & Admission Details

The Fort Knox historic site and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory are open from May through October. However, the Maine State Park grounds around these sites are open all year as long as the weather permits.

Entrance Fees

You have the option of entering only Fort Knox Maine or entering the fort and bridge observatory. The admission is rather affordable, costing no more than $40 for a family of four to do both. Of course, Maine residents, children ages 5 to 11, and seniors ages 65 and older pay cheaper entrance fees to explore one of the best-preserved forts in America.

Pets Allowed

You can to bring your dog if you keep it on a leash no longer than 6 feet. You must also clean up after your pet and make sure that it doesn’t bother other guests.

Best Things to Do Along the Fort Knox Maine Route

Since the Fort Knox historic site is located in the Downeast & Acadia region of Maine, you could take the opportunity to visit some other local attractions during your day trip. We recommend visiting these places on your way to the fort or on your way back to Mid-Coast Maine.

Scenic Turnout

On US-1 N, there’s a scenic turnout just before you reach the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. You can stop here to get excellent views and photos of the bridge in anticipation of the elevator ride to the observatory.

Penobscot Shore Preserve

With 1,800 feet of forested shoreline on the west bank of Penobscot River, Penobscot Shore Preserve is a beautiful place to explore Prospect. It features 47 acres of land, and shorebirds enjoy the mud flats. From the shore, you can see the old Bucksport mill across the river.

Jonathan Buck Monument

Across the Penobscot River from the fort is Bucksport, where the Buck Cemetery is home to the mysterious Jonathan Buck Monument. It marks the grave of town founder Colonel Jonathan Buck and is said to be cursed with the image of a woman’s leg and foot.

Sandy Point Beach

With pretty sand, Sandy Point Beach is a small beach in Stockton Springs with about 2 miles of hiking trails. You can see old pier pilings for an old passenger steamboat and factory. Locals report spotting seals at a mid-river ledge sometimes too.

Fort Point State Park & Lighthouse

Also in Stockton Springs is Fort Point State Park on the tip of a peninsula that juts into Penobscot Bay. It’s open from mid-May to mid-October, and there’s a small per-person fee to enter through the gate.

The 120 acres features more than 1 mile of shoreline and picturesque views of the water. There’s an easy, 7-mile loop for hiking, biking, and walking. In addition, you can go fishing, paddle boating, and picnicking at the state park.

Also on the peninsula tip is the Fort Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1857. The current tower and keeper’s house replaced the original light station that was established in 1836 as the first lighthouse on a Maine river.

There are many other lighthouses near Camden, Rockport, and Rockland to explore too!

Sears Island

Visiting Sears Island in Searsport is a unique opportunity to see one of the largest undeveloped areas on the East Coast. Via a causeway, you gain access to miles of shoreline, historic sites, and wildlife watching.

During the summer, recreational activities include trail walking, running, and biking, as well as kayaking. You could even join a guided nature walk, which is always free and available on a regular basis.

After exploring Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, we recommend heading into Bucksport across the Penobscot River for a bite to eat. A local favorite is Warren’s Waterfront Restaurant , where families can enjoy lobster rolls or juicy hamburgers for lunch.

If you aren’t traveling with kids, consider stopping for a drink. Friars’ Brewhouse offers a relaxing lunch of chicken wings, oven-baked flatbreads, and specialty plates. The brewery is run by a ministry of the Franciscan Brothers of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and makes award-winning beer.

Is wine more to your liking? Head to Verona Wine and Design for tapas, sandwiches, flatbread pizza, and surf and turf. Don’t forget to pair it with a glass of fantastic wine. Plus, the owners design and create custom products out of wine barrels and wine-related materials for wine enthusiasts.

THE HICHBORN

If you plan to explore Sandy Point Beach and/or Fort Point State Park, consider reserving a fine dinner at THE HICHBORN in Stockton Springs. This small, adults-only restaurant serves five-course meals alongside seasonal surprises and optional wine pairings.

Coastal Cafe & Bakery

No matter which way you’re traveling on US-1, the Coastal Cafe & Bakery in Searsport is worthwhile. The bakery strives “to make Simply Good Food” using only quality ingredients. It boasts making scratch pastries every day and having some of the best bagels in the area.

Herbie Hancock Announces North American Tour in Fall 2024

J azz icon and composer Herbie Hancock is currently touring through the spring, and he just announced additional fall dates for 2024. The North American tour will span cities across the East Coast, plus one date in Toronto, Canada. There do not appear to be any official supporting acts, but does the “Rockit” hitmaker really need an opener?

This fall’s Herbie Hancock 2024 Tour will begin on September 13 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at Au-Rene Theater. The tour will close on October 1 in Toronto, Ontario at Massey Hall.

The main spot to get tickets to the Herbie Hancock Fall Tour would be the artist’s website . There will also be a few presale events over at Ticketmaster , set to start on April 4 at 10:00 am local. The presale events will include Ticketmaster/Live Nation presales, plus a few venue presales.

General on-sale will start on April 5 at 10:00 am local. If your tour date sells out, we recommend popping over to Stubhub to see if any last-minute tickets are available.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
