CAPTAIN BEYOND Upcoming U.S. Tour Dates

captain beyond tour dates

Article By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker ‡ Edited By: Leanne Ridgeway

The contemporary incarnation of the legendary rock band CAPTAIN BEYOND announces the earliest dates of an upcoming U.S. touring trek, set to start in April.

Launching in Buffalo, N.Y. on April 9th, the run will then head toward the northern midwest and then swing south before winding down in Atlanta, GA on May 5th. The road excursion follows the band’s successful 2018 North American run, while they expect further dates will be scheduled and announced soon.

Anyone that fancies themselves a fan of rock and roll, or an appreciator of music history, instantly knows the name CAPTAIN BEYOND and the band’s integral contributions to both. Formed in the early Seventies, originally as a bi-national (U.S. and UK) act, the classic era of CAPTAIN BEYOND  consisted of drummer Bobby Caldwell, singer Rod Evans (ex-Deep Purple), keyboardist Lewie Gold, guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt, and bassist Lee Dorman – the latter two of Iron Butterfly fame.

Since that time, CAPTAIN BEYOND  has released such monumental albums as their self-titled 1972 introduction, 1973’s ‘ Sufficiently Breathless ‘, and 1977’s ‘ Dawn Explosion ‘. The band’s lineup of players intermittently changed, but over time their legacy was established by contributions of some of the finest blues-enhanced cosmic rock known to man.

There were periods of inactivity or disbandment, but in 2013, Bobby Caldwell resurrected CAPTAIN BEYOND with new blood and vigor. Setting out to share the timeless music of CAPTAIN BEYOND , Caldwell is currently joined by Simon Lind (vocals and guitar), Jeff “ Count ” Artabasy (bass), Don Bonzi (guitar), and Jamie Holka (guitar), and the quintet are soon hitting the road once again!

Guitarist Jamie Holka comments:

“I used to play Captain Beyond tunes in my band back in the early ’90s when grunge was in full swing. I remember researching this drummer Bobby Caldwell who co-wrote the album. I remember thinking drummers usually just play drums. Fast forward 25 years and I’m in the band. Cosmic indeed!”

Below is where you can catch CAPTAIN BEYOND, with more dates TBA…

The story of Captain Beyond, stoner rock pioneers

They were the pioneers of stoner rock, a supergroup who should have been super-massive. But somehow Captain Beyond managed to throw away all that promise…

Captain Beyond

Rock’n’roll has many well-kept secrets, some dirty, some amazing, many both at once. It’s one of the genre’s most enduring and endearing traits. One of its greatest hidden treasures is a scruffy neo-supergroup from the dawn of the 1970s called Captain Beyond.

Formed in the wake of Iron Butterfly’s sudden and premature demise in 1971, Captain Beyond captured perfectly the zeitgeist of the era, wrapping their Technicolor freak-flag around the Butterfly’s grungey stoner metal, layering their dense caveman-thud with far-out spurts of space-prog and throbbing tribal grooves. It was hard rock, for sure, born of thunder and sweat, but it was weird and cosmic, too. Think head shops and UFO cults, and you’ve got it.

Captain Beyond were wily wizards gnawing on dinosaur bones in the waning days of the Age of Aquarius. It’s not surprising that Larry ‘Rhino’ Reinhardt is the only person that’s been part of Captain Beyond since the band formed. It was, after all, named after him.

“We were on tour in Europe with Iron Butterfly,” Reinhardt explains, sitting at home in Florida. “Butterfly and Yes were on the same bus. After a real long night with a pipe – we all partook in some attitude adjustment for the long ride – I was coming out of the bus, and Chris Squire from Yes looked at my blood-red eyes and said: ‘Goddamn, you look like Captain Beyond!’. The name stuck with me ever since.”

Reinhardt joined proto-metal warriors Iron Butterfly for their 1970 album Metamorphosis . He was also with them on a European tour to support the album.

“We were riding high, the European audiences were loving the new band. We were just tearing people’s heads off, and we were all saying: ‘We’ve really go to do another album’. But then Doug [Ingle, Iron Butterfly’s original singer] called a meeting, and so we went down there. As I remember it, there were a couple of groupies, and he was having a cocktail, and there were crosses all over the room. He was a preacher’s son, and I think he had a revelation or something. He said: ‘Guys, I can’t go on any more. I can’t take this rock ’n’ roll life with all the women and the drinking’. And I’m looking at him having a gin and tonic with two broads sitting next to him while he’s telling me this. I was in shock. I just couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘This band is about to make a big, new splash, and you quit?’. We couldn’t do Butterfly without his voice. He flushed the toilet on us.”

After Butterfly ended, Reinhardt and Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman decided to continue playing together on a new project. Reinhardt called on an old friend to join them – drummer Bobby Caldwell. Caldwell and Reinhardt had played in rival garage bands in Florida in the late 60s. Caldwell later played with the Allman Brothers and with Johnny Winter’s band. He was still touring with Winter when he heard from the renegade Butterflies.

“They asked me if I wanted to get together. And I had been sitting on this idea since playing with the Allman Brothers. I wanted to do this different kind of music. I wanted to do something that was almost extreme but would also have real songs, just with different kinds of time signatures and arrangements. I’d been thinking about this for a long time, I just didn’t know if I could find the people to do it. So, I got this call from those guys. At the time, I was playing with Johnny and I was very happy. But then Johnny said he wanted to take a hiatus after being burned out from three years of very heavy touring. When that happened I flew to LA, and the three of us got together. And then Rod came in after that.”

In an interview in late 2012, Rhino suggested that Caldwell joined after Evans had been brought in:

“Our manager also looked after Rod, and suggested we try him out.”

Rod Evans was a founding member of Deep Purple, and sang on one of their biggest early hits, Hush . In 1969, Purple decided they needed a heavier sound, and so Evans was ousted from the band in favour of the leather-lunged Ian Gillan.

Looking for bright new horizons, Evans moved to Los Angeles. He soon found himself jamming with Captain Beyond. The results, according to Reinhardt, were both magical and miserable.

“Rod had a great voice and a great singing style,” he remembers. “Unfortunately he also had mental problems. He quit the band four times before we ever even hit the road.” Although Caldwell confirms Evans’ fight-or-flight behaviour, he doesn’t agree with Rhino’s assessment of his old singer’s mental status.

“Rhino’s right, he did quit a few times,” Caldwell says, “but I don’t think his behaviour had anything to do with mental problems. Rod was very insecure about his abilities, so any little thing would make him feel like maybe he wasn’t up to the job. That’s not very uncommon for people in the arts. As to what his insecurities were attributed to, I couldn’t tell you. All I can say is he was a great singer.”

Strained relationships within the band weren’t Captain Beyond’s only problems. Their first, self-titled album was a masterpiece of sophisticated aggression, part dope-rock thuggery, part limber, prog-baiting space-metal. It sold well, and the band gigged relentlessly, including a full-scale tour with the Alice Cooper band. But somewhere along the way, Beyond’s record label, Capricorn, had a sudden change of heart. According to Reinhardt, by the time the band starting working on their follow-up album, labelmates the Allman Brothers had broken big, and Capricorn wanted Captain Beyond to explore their southern side. Unfortunately they didn’t have one.

“We were in all the magazines – Rolling Stone, Billboard, all of that. Our record was in the charts and we were on the radio, but our record company just wasn’t behind us,” Reinhardt says. “They wanted us to change, to be more like them. We said: ‘You signed a blonde and now you want a brunette? We’re sorry, but we can’t just get a bottle of dye and change our hair colour’. That pissed them off, and that was the beginning of the end.

“They did everything they could to destroy us after that. That’s why, I think, we were like this sort of secret, cult band. They did stuff like put us on tours that were absolutely absurd, like Sha Na Na – they were headlining, we were the opening act. Does that sound good to you? We were playing in New York, in Central Park. It was like the Republicans and the Democrats, like going to Congress. When we were on, the Sha Na Na side of the crowd started throwing vegetables. They were throwing tomatoes, bananas and grapes at us, and we were trying to dodge all this shit. And then we got into the swing of it and we started to throw the vegetables back at them. And then the crowd started throwing stuff at each other. It just became a huge food fight. We called that one the Fruit And Vegetable Festival. It was just crazy. By the end of it we just started booking our own gigs, and the guy who owned the label was threatening to fly out and beat our asses. I offered to meet him halfway, so we could get it over with quicker.”

“I don’t remember it going down like that,” says Caldwell, who agrees that things got decidedly weird with Capricorn, but believes the reasons were less sinister, and more typical 70s rock bullshit: mismanagement and recreational drug use.

“What I remember is that we started having problems because our manager was also the head of the record label. It was a mistake. If your manager and the head of your record company is the same person, you can’t bring your grievances to either one. Also, there was so much… ‘stimulation’, let’s say, going on with the people at Capricorn, that they’d get on the phone, and any little thing could set them off. Phil [Walden, Capricorn head] threatened to kill Rhino, he threatened to kill Lee. There was this level of aggression going on, and things slowly started to deteriorate. I don’t remember it having anything to do with us playing southern rock, though. That wasn’t even on the cards.”

In 1973 the beleaguered band released their second album, Sufficiently Breathless. Combining the band’s penchant for spaced-out hard rock with a sudden affection for Latin percussion, the record is one odd duck indeed. A flop at the time it was released, the album eventually found its fans. Bobby Caldwell, who left the band before it was recorded, is not one of them.

“Around the end of 1972 there seemed to be a division in the band,” Caldwell says. “Lee and Rhino were on one side, Rod was sort of standing in the middle and I was on the other. And it was really probably about nothing important, just some childhood ego things or something. But we were really butting heads about something. And I remember saying: ‘Look, we’re right at the door of major stardom’. I knew we were going to break huge. I said: ‘All we have to do is keep doing what we’re doing. All we have to do is keep writing creative stuff’. But there was some kind of opposition mounting that was against that. So I finally said: ‘Fine. Fuck it. I’m leaving’. And I did. And that’s where you got the second album. Rhino found some new guys who would listen to him, and he turned the band into an all-gay Latin revue, or whatever it was [laughs]. If it was a great album, I would say it was. But it wasn’t. And it wasn’t Captain Beyond. It went nowhere.

“About seven months later, they gave me a call. I had just replaced Carmine Appice in Cactus, but I reconciled with the guys and we got back together, although I was very wary about the whole deal at this point.”

The band carried on, but Evans soon left the fold. To this day, neither Rhino nor Caldwell knows exactly why.

“We were getting ready to start the next album. It was just after Christmas, and Rod called a meeting and told us he was leaving the band,” Caldwell remembers. “There was no obvious underlying problems that we knew of for why he was quitting. It might have been his insecurities again, or because he had met a girl and maybe he didn’t want to leave her to go out on the road. Or maybe he was just outgrowing the band. I still don’t really know.”

With Evans’s departure, the band began holding auditions for a new singer – future Journey frontman Steve Perry was one of the many who ended up on the rejected pile – before they decided on a relative unknown, Willie Daffern.

In 1977, after several years of dealing with an indifferent record label and slowly building a cult of loyal listeners, the newly shuffled Captain Beyond released their third and final album, Dawn Explosion . Weird and wonderful, its comic-book prog-metal and ethereal space-streaking found the band in fine, freaky form. Unfortunately, they dissolved not long after the record hit the shelves.

“We were just starting to get somewhere – again,” sighs Rhino. “And then our singer, Willie, decided he wanted to go solo. And that was it. We kept trying to get it back together again but it just wouldn’t fly.”

“If I was just a drummer, and not a songwriter,” says Caldwell, “I probably would have cared a lot less about Captain Beyond breaking up. But I still feel like if we had just kept the band together we could have been huge. I mean, the band was already getting big. When we played Chicago it was like Led Zeppelin was playing there. That’s the kind of adulation that was going on. It was all there for us to take. We had the magic to make it all happen. We had the right songs and we had the right people, but we had the wrong manager and the wrong record company.”

With Captain Beyond on indefinite hiatus, Rhino decided to give some old friends a call.

“We got the original Iron Butterfly back together and went on tour. But by that point Doug was a completely different person. He’d pass out behind the keyboards, and suddenly you’d just hear ‘BRRRRRRRRRRR’, because he was laying on the keys. So that didn’t last. And then I didn’t play for about 10 years after that, because my hand almost got cut off. I fell out of a building doing security work. I fell about 30 feet. I went through two floors before I hit a bunch of boxes of wire. I didn’t even feel anything at first, but I was covered in blood, so I knew that wasn’t good. It cut two tendons in half on my left hand and almost cut a third one. They put 120 stitches in my hand. I used to cry. I’d pick up a guitar and I couldn’t even play a chord.”

Things went more smoothly for Caldwell. While on his first hiatus with Captain Beyond, the journeyman drummer joined Rick Derringer’s band, and played on his seminal All American Boy album. Caldwell later joined the short-lived Brit-rock supergroup Armageddon with former Yardbirds and Renaissance frontman Keith Relf.

Still, neither Rhino nor Caldwell felt like the Captain Beyond story was quite finished, especially since the band’s reputation as the godfathers of stoner rock continued to grow over the decades. And so, in the late 1990s, the band gave it one final try. Unfortunately they went out with a fizzle, not a bang.

“When Rhino contacted me about getting Beyond back together, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about it,” says Caldwell. “It didn’t seem like a very good idea. But I did try to get in touch with the other guys. I asked Lee, but he never called me back. There was something going on with Rod and Rhino, and Rod just didn’t want to deal with him. So, we had to get some new guys. We got a bar singer, and a bar bass player, and a guy on keyboards who thought he was Keith Emerson.”

This motley crew rolled into Sweden for the 1999 Sweden Rock Festival. But, despite a ravenous press and surprisingly warm and enthusiastic welcome, this potentially career-defining gig turned out to be a disaster.

“We didn’t play well,” sighs Reinhardt. “We couldn’t communicate with the sound guy. And amps kept blowing up.”

Caldwell remembers it differently: “Larry [Rhino] was drunk. He drank for two straight days before we even got out there. I could’ve picked him up and thrown him into the audience. That’s how mad I was. And I would have done it, if I didn’t think it would have broken up the band, as feeble as it was at the time. We’d been rehearsing for months for this show. Everyone was disappointed. There were so many people out there to see us, and he played so shitty, it was just a joke.”

Despite this major misstep, the band attempted to carry on for the next few years, and even released a four-track EP of new material in 2000. However, according to Caldwell it had become an endless struggle to keep things going. And in 2001 Captain Beyond played their final show together.

“We played a gig in the fall of 2001,” Caldwell remembers. “The place was sold out. It was in Clearwater. Florida. The people were packed in there and everybody seemed to be pleased. And then I didn’t hear from Rhino for two-and-a-half years after that. That was basically it.”

Bobby Caldwell still plays with his own band in Florida. As does Rhino Reinhardt, at the tie of writing. In fact after a long bout with liver cancer – and an exceedingly morbid 2009 solo album, Rhino’s Last Dance, for which Reinhardt sang his lines while wearing an oxygen mask – Captain Beyond’s guitar slinger has recently released a second [and decidedly more optimistic] solo album, Back In The Day. Assembling a crack band of local legends – most of the players on the record spent the last few years playing with former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts – Rhino’s resurrection album is a raucous wallop of southern-fried slabbage that touches on every aspect of his long and winding career, from Iron Butterfly’s sonic battering to Captain Beyond’s cosmic riffery to the gutbucket blooze that started Rhino on his musical path so many decades ago.

“It’s a bit of everything that I’ve done over the years,” he says. “The basic concept was playing music from my roots, going back in the day to the way things were, but with a modern edge.”

As for Captain Beyond, it appears that the good captain has launched his last cosmic voyage. Luckily, though, he is survived by countless young, long-haired, sufficiently breathless riff-addicts who have taken, and continue to take, inspiration from the band’s thunderous astro-prog.

“Captain Beyond is an acquired taste,” Caldwell admits. “But I’m telling you, when we were in Sweden for the Sweden Rock Festival, so many people were trying to talk to us that I thought maybe they had us confused with the Rolling Stones or something. Not that I haven’t had my share of people who want an autograph or to shake my hand, but in Sweden there was just so many of them. It’s still a worldwide phenomenon. To this day, Captain Beyond are still respected by listeners and by musicians.”

This feature originally appeared in Classic Rock issue No.162 [cover date September 2011]. The following year both Larry ‘Rhino’ Reinhardt and Lee Dorman died. Reinhardt passed on January 2, 2012 at age 63 of cirrhosis of the liver; Dorman, age 70, died of natural causes in his car in Laguna Niguel, California on December 21, 2012.

Beginning in the 1950s as an alternative to rock and roll, early iterations of pop-rock were influenced by doo-wop and rock-and-roll arrangements and styles. Many traditionalists prefer rock and roll to the more slick, commercial production of pop-rock.

Some refer to the music as power pop with a similar sound and lyrical content. Pop-rock music has been very commercially successful using elements of rock music. Many describe it as an upbeat variety of rock music. The term pop comes from the early twentieth century referring to popular music. Eagles NFL Draft 2024 grades: What Philadelphia failed to do, and one thing it definitely got right

The eagles addressed the secondary, but admittedly were shocked they didn't draft an offensive lineman early.

NCAA Football: Western Michigan at Iowa

The Philadelphia Eagles had a impressive three days of the NFL Draft , a masterclass toward how Howie Roseman addressed the present and future. Roseman found a way to address the secondary on the first two days of the draft while stockpiling picks on Day 3 and using them to set up draft capital in future seasons.

Thanks to tying the NFL record for trades in a draft, the Eagles acquired a 2025 third-, fourth-, and fifth-round pick and gave themselves extra draft capital for the future. This was the biggest takeaway of the draft for an Eagles team that addressed major needs in the early rounds, but regretted not taking care of other aspects of the roster.

Here are the nine Eagles picks in this year's draft:

Eagles 2024 NFL Draft class

Eagles 2024 nfl draft grades.

Pete Prisco's grade: B+

Best pick: "Rather than panicking and trading up, they stayed put and landed the top cover corner in the draft in Quinyon Mitchell in the first round. It was a gamble that paid off."

Chris Trapasso's grade: A

Summary: "GM Howie Roseman knows how to balance the draft as well as any GM in the league. Sometimes he's ultra aggressive, other times he trades back multiple times and lets the draft come to him. Either way, it always feels like quality prospects fall into his lap, doesn't it? Mitchell AND DeJean? HELLO. Hunt has immense upside based on what he showed in 2023 at Houston Baptist, which came after a switch from safety at Cornell. Smith and Wilson are two divergent specimens but both experienced productive collegiate careers at marquee programs. And Trotter has the coverage ability and range to be a star in Philadelphia, just like his dad."

What Eagles failed to address

Offensive line early .

The Eagles were targeting offensive linemen early in the draft, but the board didn't fall their way with multiple prospects. Philadelphia chose not to trade up in Round 1 with the cornerbacks falling to it at No. 22. The front office could afford to pass on Troy Fautanu (who went to the Steelers at No. 20) with Quinyon Mitchell and Terrion Arnold falling into its lap.

Offensive line could have been addressed in Round 2 with picks Nos. 50 and 53, but the Eagles traded up to No. 40 and landed one of the top players on their board in Cooper DeJean. That's a major win for Philadelphia at the expense of drafting an offensive lineman with any of those second-round picks.

The Eagles did recoup a third-round pick in the DeJean deal (No. 78), then traded back multiple times in Round 3 for various reasons. While they gathered more draft capital, possible additions along the offensive linemen (namely  Cooper Beebe , Kiran Amegadjie,  Christian Haynes and Zak Zinter ) went off the board. They traded down again to No. 94 and selected pass rusher Jalyx Hun after all potential offensive line targets were gone.

There were other third-round targets who weren't offensive linemen whom the Eagles liked, but even Howie Roseman admitted it was surprising they didn't take an offensive lineman early.

"It's just how the board fell," Roseman said. "I think there was a run on offensive linemen in some areas where we didn't pick. When we came back and picked in some of those rounds, it didn't really fit. We felt like it was more important to stay true to our board than to just kind of reach. Like you said, we have added some offensive line."

The Eagles did draft Trevor Keegan and Dylan McMahon on Day 3, then  reportedly added former New York Jets first-round pick  Mekhi Becton after the draft. The Eagles addressed depth on the offensive line, but appear settled on Tyler Steen at right guard -- for now.

"I think both those guys, both were team captains," Roseman said of Keegan and McMahon. "Obviously you talk about Keegan, the team captain for national championship team. Can play with power. He has mentality.

"Then you talk about Dylan. He's probably a little bit different guy. Elite athlete. Again, a guy that -- both those guys that we've been on as a staff and felt fortunate that they were there on Day 3."

Opportunity to draft a linebacker in Round 3

The Eagles traded back in Round 3 and stockpiled picks for Day 3, eventually settling in at No. 94. Payton Wilson was sitting on the board at No. 94, but the Eagles passed and took Hunt from Houston Christian. Hunt rose up draft boards since the Senior Bowl and is still developing as a football player.

"He's got freaky tools in his body. He's an explosive guy," Roseman said. "If you watch his best plays, he's doing things that are unique. He can bend. He can close. He can finish. He's long. ... We feel like we got a good edge rush group. He doesn't have to come in here (and play right away) -- we're going to develop him like we talked about.

"This is a perfect developmental guy for us because of the tools in his body and his character and work ethic, and we think we can really find something with him. That's on us. That's on how he's going to work."

Hunt is essentially on a redshirt year, yet the Eagles could have taken a Week 1 starter at linebacker with Wilson, who would have been the top linebacker taken if not for the injuries . The Steelers landed Wilson at No. 98 -- with the third-round pick the Eagles gave up to acquire Kenny Pickett -- while the Eagles took a pass rusher they'll stash and develop in year one.

For a team that needed help at linebacker, Wilson would have been the perfect fit. This comes down to what the Eagles medical staff thought of Wilson, which we don't know. The Steelers believed he was worth taking four picks after the Eagles.

What Eagles got right

Secondary addressed early with two potential starters.

Getting Quinyon Mitchell at No. 22 was a major win for the Eagles front office. Not only did Philadelphia get a Week 1 starting cornerback in Mitchell, but it didn't have to trade up to acquire him, nor did it have to part ways with either of its second-round picks (Nos. 50 and 53). That massive win for the organization paid off on Day 2.

The Eagles were aggressive Friday, trading up 10 spots to No. 40. They started a run of cornerbacks going off the board as Cooper DeJean fell into their lap, adding a player they had a first-round grade on in the second round.

"He was a first-round player for us," Roseman said. "It's rare for us to be picking in the 20s and to get two first-round players. You know, both those guys were first-round players for us.

"We didn't have 32 first-round guys, so when you get that opportunity to get two first-round guys, especially picking where we were, we felt like it was an opportunity and it was obviously an area we wanted to address."

Both Mitchell and DeJean could start for the Eagles in Week 1 -- Mitchell at cornerback and DeJean at safety. The Eagles could play DeJean at outside cornerback, in the slot, or as a safety; he's ready to contribute wherever needed.

The Eagles are deep in the secondary all of a sudden. Philadelphia has Darius Slay , James Bradberry , Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Kelee Ringo , Eli Ricks , Avonte Maddox , and Isaiah Rodgers at cornerback. The Eagles have C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship , Cooper DeJean and Sydney Brown as the top four safeties. Not only are the Eagles deep at both positions, but athletic. The secondary should be significantly better in 2024.

Picks acquired for 2025

The Eagles certainly stocked the cupboard for future draft picks, using their seven picks in the fourth round to get draft picks in the middle rounds for 2025. Here were the eight trades the Eagles made:

  • 2nd round:  No. 50, No. 53, and No. 161 to  Commanders  for No. 40 (selected  Cooper DeJean ) No. 78, and No. 152 (selected  Ainias Smith )
  • 3rd round:  No. 78 to Texans for No. 86 and No. 123
  • 3rd round:  No. 86 to  49ers  for No. 94 (selected Jalyx Hunt) and No. 132
  • 4th round:  No. 120 to  Dolphins  for 2025 third-round pick
  • 4th round:  No. 123 to Texans for No. 127 (selected  Will Shipley ) and 2025 fifth-round pick
  • 4th round:  No. 132 and No. 210 to  Lions  for No. 164, No. 201 and 2025 fourth-round pick
  • 5th round:  No. 164 and No. 201 to  Colts  for No. 155 (selected  Jeremiah Trotter Jr. )
  • 5th round:  No. 171 to  Jets  for No. 185 and No. 190 (selected  Johnny Wilson  and Dylan McMahon)

Roseman's job was to recoup picks for the 2025 draft -- and he succeeded. Here are the Eagles picks in the 2025 draft:

  • 3rd round (from Dolphins)
  • 4th round (from Lions)
  • 5th round (from Texans)

Not only did the Eagles acquire three picks for 2025, but they have nine total picks for next year. They also got back the fourth-round pick they sent to the Lions in the  D'Andre Swift  trade last year at the draft. The eight trades are tied for the most ever for a team since the draft went to seven rounds in 1994, matching the 2018  New England Patriots  and 2023  Houston Texans  (eight) for the most in the seven-round format.

Roseman set the Eagles up to be even more aggressive in the 2025 NFL Draft , while also improving the secondary and adding depth at wide receiver and on the offensive line.

"We were a little light for next year's draft going into day three, and so I think that was a little bit of a focus in the trade talks,' Roseman said. "Sometimes you're in trade talks and kind of going, 'Hey, I'll take a pick in this year's draft.' So in those talks more focused in particular about instead of a this year pick, we'll take a next year pick just because we wanted to get back some of the picks that we had gotten rid of next year.

"We felt like we had an opportunity with the amount of picks we had today to get a lot of players that we liked, and we were also excited about the draft process. It will be a little bit different draft class next year because of the amount of guys that are coming out next year. That was kind of in the back of our mind.

When taking into account how little draft capital the Eagles had for next year's draft and how they addressed depth at multiple positions, Day 3 was a massive win for the front office.

Spoof Tycoon Brian Butterfield.

Brian Butterfield: ‘Selling candy to babies is harder than it looks ... they don’t carry money’

The business mogul – who looks suspiciously like comic Peter Serafinowicz – knows his stuff: he invested in Blockbuster and advised Liz Truss. Now he’s sharing his ‘wisdom’ with a book and tour

I t is 9am on a cold spring morning, and I’m standing in central London outside posh bank Coutts & Co, staring at my own breath, waiting for Brian Butterfield. This is our third attempt at meeting due to “diary issues”. Butterfield dropped his diary down the toilet, twice.

You’ll know Butterfield, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the comedian Peter Serafinowicz , as one of the UK’s most prominent businessmen alongside Lord Sugar, Sir Richard Branson and Sir Philip Green. (I ask why Butterfield hasn’t been made a sir yet. “I was Liz Truss’s leading economic adviser, so I was surprised not to be offered a knighthood in her honours list.”)

Butterfield made his live stage debut in 2023 with Brian Butterfield’s Call of Now, a self-improving business seminar that resembles a Ted Talk, or “BRIAN Talk”, as Butterfield puts it. The tour was a sellout, although Butterfield later denies this. “I have not sold out! I have always stuck to my business principles,” he protests. He is now readying himself for more live dates in May to coincide with his first book, There’s No Business Like Business.

“Are you here for the interview?” he asks, arriving at pavement level. Butterfield travels by Sinclair C5 – the battery-powered recumbent tricycle from 1985. “I signed up for a 40-year lease. Only two payments left. I’m thinking about trading in for a C6. You should get one. You don’t pay the congestion charge and it’s great for going under car park barriers.” Butterfield appears in fine fettle. Hair: tidy. Moustache: neatly trimmed. (“You need to look as good as your business.”) His trademark grey suit looks freshly pressed. “It’s made from a material I invented myself – Brylon – a blend of wool, nylon and asbestos. I’ve only been able to wear it since Brexit as it contravenes several European health regulations.”

Butterfield rarely grants interviews. He is not press-shy, but time is money, and he’s a busy man. Eventually, his PA Briana – who sounds suspiciously like Butterfield himself on the phone – manages to squeeze me in. (“I’ve had to let Briana go,” Butterfield tells me later. “He was hopeless. I mean, she .”) The proviso is that I don’t mind if Butterfield is “on duty”. Who wouldn’t want exclusive access to witness the extraordinary business titan at work?

Coutts is the bank that infamously closed Nigel Farage’s account in 2023 . “Farage owes me money!” snorts Butterfield. “£2,000 from 2010 when Butterfield Aeronautics serviced his two-seater aircraft.”

How long has he banked with Coutts? “Oh, I don’t bank with Coutts,” he scoffs. “I’m offering Coutts the chance to bank with me .”

“What’s safer than a safe?” he says, his voice raising an octave as he walks into the bank. The pitch has begun. “Butterfield Secure Banking, where you can entrust all your money, gold and cryptocurrency. It’s the most secure banking service in the world … ”

Deborah, the Coutts receptionist, looks baffled. “Have you got an appointment, sir?” she asks.

“Never mind that, here’s how it works,” he says, handing over a takeaway menu for Chicago Chicken. “Oh, hang on.” He pats his pockets. “I had 100 leaflets printed this morning. Come on, Stephen. Let’s come back this afternoon.” Stephen? Apparently he’s talking to me. I’ll correct him later.

Butterfield was born in “19 … something or other”. He’s unwilling to be more specific. “I want people to see me as a young, fresh-faced businessman,” he reasons. “I fear investors would be disinterested if they knew I was 65 … 66 next month.”

Brian Butterfield (or is it Peter Serafinowicz?) on tour.

Butterfield grew up to working-class parents. His education then is a surprise. “You’ve caught me. I’m an Old Etonian,” he says. “My parents could only afford one day’s tuition. Still, I learned a lot and made strong friendships in that lunch break.” He’s aware he hasn’t matched the heights of other Old Etonians. “I didn’t become prime minister, like Boris Johnson. Or a helicopter pilot, like Prince William.”

His first job was a sweet shop he set up outside a nursery. “Selling candy to babies is harder than it looks because babies don’t carry money.” He then worked as the lord mayor’s croupier and as a circus horse dentist. “That was intense. And also in tents. Very big tents.”

Butterfield is also responsible for The Butterfield Diet, a revolutionary programme where you almost starve yourself for five days, gorge on anything for one day (“treat day”), then recover on the seventh. Butterfield is adamant he spawned the intermittent fasting craze. He also says he supplied £120m-worth of PPE to the government, but is somehow the only contractor who lost money. “I’m still paying back several Chinese manufacturers. I believe every failure is an opportunity to learn a new lesson,” he adds.

After the Coutts false start, our next meeting is lunch with fellow captain of business Sir Richard Branson. I ask where we’ll be dining. “Pret a Manger on Tottenham Court Road. It’s his favourite one. As Branson says: ‘It’s easy to become a millionaire, but to remain one, you have to be careful with your money.’ That’s why Branson shops at Lidl, while Sugar is more of an Aldi man.”

after newsletter promotion

A table for three, please. But there’s bad news. Branson has WhatsApped to cancel, Butterfield says. There’s a crisis at his flagship business, Virgin Olive Oil. “It’s typical Branson,” says Butterfield. “Today is his turn to pay.” I turn this to my favour: some alone time with Butterfield, to find out what makes the great man tick. “Good idea,” he says. “I actually forgot to print out your CV, so you asking me questions is a smart use of our time.”

Slightly confused, I ask what Butterfield has learned from his live shows so far.

“ Lots of things,” he says. “For example, I learned that the money you make from the tickets should be more than the cost of hiring the venue. Hopefully the second leg will help pay off my debts from the first.” He touches the plastic tray. “Touch wood.”

“Everyone is different. What works for one person may not work for another,” he continues. “But you can’t do a personal seminar for each person. I did try but it was very time-consuming and not cost-effective.”

I ask if Butterfield truly believes that business seminars can transform people’s lives. “There are a lot of charlatans out there charging a small fortune for the promise of success,” he says. “Don’t trust anyone who tells you they know the secrets to business success. That’s just one of the business secrets I reveal in my seminar.”

With the cost of living crisis, what advice would he give to the public? “Never give up. Keep working hard and eventually you’ll achieve your goals. I just wish I could speak to my younger self. Tell him to hang in there … I’d also tell him not to invest all his money in Woolworths and Blockbuster Video.”

Butterfield goes silent. I ask if he’s OK. He says he’s better than OK. “A phone that allows you to speak to your younger self? Write that down, Stephen. I want to pitch it on Dragons’ Den.”

The conversation moves on to Butterfield’s personal life. I realise that, beyond the asbestos suit, I know very little about him. Is he married, for example? “I am married,” he says. “To business.”

The alarm on Butterfield’s phone suddenly goes off. “Well, it was lovely to meet you, Stephen,” he says, extending a hand. “Congratulations! You’ve got the job!” He hands over a crumpled piece of paper. “Could you pick up my dry cleaning and click-and-collect from Tesco?” He tells me he’s got to rush off to a meeting with Guardian journalist Rich Pelley who’s writing a profile piece on him. Before I can point out I’m from the Guardian and not interviewing for the job of his new PA, he’s out of the door. Thanks, Brian. See you in the office tomorrow.
