Brewery Hopping in Muskoka: A One-Day Tour of the Region’s Best Craft Breweries

Discover the tastes of muskoka’s craft brewery scene.

If you’re a fan of craft beer and beautiful scenery, then a brewery tour through Muskoka is the perfect way to spend the day. Muskoka is home to some amazing breweries, and visiting them all in one day is a great way to sample a wide variety of beers while taking in the natural beauty of Muskoka.

beer tour muskoka

The tour starts off at Sawdust City Brewing Co . , located in the charming town of Gravenhurst (it’s right beside the ginormous yellow Muskoka chair, you can’t miss it!). Before setting out on your tour, grab a bite to eat at Sawdust City’s onsite kitchen. Sawdust City is a great place to start your tour because they offer a variety of delicious pub-style fare and a huge selection of beers on tap. Try “Patio Nights,” a sangria-style pale ale with a beautiful deep red-purple colour. This brew is fruity, spicy and juicy with just a hint of hops. If you’re looking to try multiple beers, opt for a flight.

Pro tip to the best flight-tasting experience: Sample a light-coloured beer such as a lager or blonde ale, then progress to darker beers like amber ales, brown ales and finally, the darkest such as a stout or porter for an enhanced tasting experience. This order allows the drinker to gradually adjust to the increasingly strong and complex flavours as they move to the darker beers, and makes it a great way to discover and compare different styles of beer.

After fueling up on food and beer, head north to Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge, one of the region’s most popular breweries. They offer a selection of premium craft beers, as well as a diverse range of spirits, including flavoured hard sparkling water and gin. Be sure to try the “Mad Tom IPA” a classic hoppy beer. If you really like it, try “Twice As Mad” for even more boldness!  In the summers the brewery offers tours of their facility, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how their beer is made; you can learn a lot from this tour as guide’s are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their craft brews. Pick the flight option to sample these unique beer flavours to maximize your visit at the brewery!

Non-alcoholic option for the dutiful designated driver: “Muskoka Wandr,” a sparkling and refreshingly tart, tea-based beverage.

Continuing your journey, take a short trip north to Canvas Brewing Co in Huntsville, where you’ll find a modern taproom with a casual atmosphere and an amazing new event space. At Canvas you can try one of their many core brews on tap like the “Last Light Lager” or “Back Trail Pale Ale.” As well, be sure to try some of their other limited or seasonal beers. They also have delicious beer-tails like the “Beergarit,” a fun twist on the traditional Margarita. Canvas is a short walk to Huntsville’s downtown core where you will find trendy shops, loads of art installations and a beautiful view of the water. Load up on some of the brewery’s dippable snacks before you set out to the next stop on the tour.

Travelling south, the next stop on your tour is Lake of Bays Brewing in Baysville, where you’ll find a rustic taproom with a laid-back vibe. Among their beer selection, the “ Forest Dweller ” is a must-try sour. This wildberry citrus sour has notes of tart raspberry to start that eases into an earthy vibe with hints of chocolate.

Non-alcoholic option for the dutiful designated driver: “Near Zero,” a pale ale with citrus flavours of lemon and grapefruit, finishing a clean with notes of bread crust and citrus rind.

Finally, head west through beautiful Muskoka Lakes to Clear Lake Brewing in Torrance, where you’ll find a taproom with a selection of beers that range from light to dark and hoppy to malty. The “Honey Cream Ale” is a great option if you’re looking for something light and easy to drink that finishes with a crisp smoothness. Clear Lake Brewing also has a fabulous menu filled with casual favourites and shareables. Plan ahead and stay the night, check out the Muskoka Beer Spa onsite at the brewery for a unique cabin stay.

As you go on your tour and sample beers, it’s important to remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive. It’s always best to have a designated driver, or consider other means of transportation such as a taxi, driving service or private tour bus .

In addition to enjoying the different beers on offer, be sure to take in the natural beauty of Muskoka, with its lakes, forests, and rocky outcrops. And don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at the breweries that offer food, it will make your tour that much more enjoyable.

The Top 3 Craft Breweries in Muskoka

Breweries in Muskoka

The Best Breweries in Muskoka

As we surge ahead into a new decade, there are currently four craft breweries in Muskoka—they’re located in Torrance, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Baysville, respectively. Ranking breweries is unquestionably challenging as each Muskoka beer drinker has a unique flavour palate, not to mention preferences in taproom style. Location is equally as important, especially when you’re vacationing with the family. We believe that these three selections struck a proper balance based on quality, atmosphere, location, and guest feedback.

Sawdust City Brewing Co.

While most travellers flock to Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge , our team cannot get enough of Sawdust City Brewing ’s tasty concoctions, rustic taproom, and Saturday afternoon tours . If you’re already planning to visit Muskoka Steamboats , the Bethune Memorial House , or the  Auburn Gallery of Fine Art , we highly recommend a brief respite at Sawdust City. It’s worth mentioning that Sawdust City is the top-rated Muskoka brewery on Untappd , an online community of beer aficionados. While most recipes don’t last more than a couple of months, Sawdust does feature six flagship beers, including the roasty Skinny Dippin’ Stout and hazy Golden Beach pale.

Muskoka Brewery

Because all four breweries in Muskoka allow kids, it’s becoming more and more common to see mom and dad savouring a beer flight while the little ones draw and sip on root beer. And there’s no better locale for families than Muskoka Brewery, a 23-year-old staple with frequent open mic nights, craft expos, and private events. The Muskoka Brewery tour is a must , even for the kiddos! You’ll have the rare opportunity to meander through a 40,000-square-foot facility while learning about the brewing process and sampling fresh batches.

Clear Lake Brewing Co.

We chose Clear Lake Brewing over Lake of Bays because Torrance is only 44 kilometres from Port Severn. Their branding, which depicts a man leaping into a sapphire blue lake, perfectly matches Severn Lodge ’s summertime aura. Clear Lake specializes in sessionable beers, ranging from the extra light Cran Radler to the honey-infused Cream Ale . The taproom itself often hosts communal bonfires, live musicians, and family gatherings during the summer months. Don’t forget to purchase some merch before trekking back to the lodge for some beach relaxation, tasty grub, and moonlit bass fishing.

Best Muskoka Breweries

Dobbernationloves had the opportunity to chat with Todd Lewin, President of Muskoka Brewery, about the region’s unique brewing history.

So what were some of the first Muskoka breweries? Lewin explains, “Muskoka Brewery was the first. Back in the late 1990’s there was a Molson Brewery in Barrie and Northern Brewery up in Sudbury but nothing in between. There were a ton of passionate beer drinkers in the Muskoka region and the founders Gary McMullen and Kirk Evans wanted to create beers that better represented the unique Muskoka region.”

So when Muskoka Brewery first opened, what did the local beer industry look like in Ontario cottage country? Lewin adds, “Muskoka Brewery kicked open the doors in June 1996 with one brand, our flagship Muskoka Cream Ale. At that time most of the beers in the region were lighter lagers produced by the big three breweries. There was nothing truly local and Muskoka Brewery became the first brewery to start producing more flavour forward ales that quickly starting to gain a fan base in the community. Today, there are several breweries that have opened up in the Muskoka region but for 14 years Muskoka Brewery was the only one leading the charge.”

Lewin goes on to describe Muskoka’s more recent craft beer boom, “Lake of Bays Brewing opened in 2010 and then others like Sawdust City soon followed. The Muskoka region is all about the great outdoors and easygoing, relaxing times with friends and family. The Muskoka breweries have a close kinship and work collectively to help grow the craft beer business in the area.  The vibe here is more laid back than in the big cities and think many of the beer styles and tap rooms reflect this ‘cottage country’ feeling. We are surrounded by lakes, rivers and trees and protecting these resources is important to all that brew here and call Muskoka home.”

So what trends should craft beer fans expect to see in Muskoka? Lewin predicts, “As more and more people come North to the Muskoka region I see continued growth for breweries in the area.  Beer tourism is growing but the breweries need to start thinking outside of just beer to partner with the local wineries, cideries and distilleries on true ‘craft’ tourism in the area. Along with other areas like Niagara or Prince Edward County , the Muskoka region has the potential to really lead on this front. Muskoka has so much to offer year round, there is an opportunity to really pair that with great beer experiences.”

Muskoka Brewery

1964 Muskoka Beach Road, Bracebridge , 705-646-1266

Muskoka Brewery is the most famous craft brewery in Muskoka. The popular craft brewery in Bracebridge houses a state-of-the-art production facility, retail shop, tap room, and hosts daily tours.

Gary McMullen and Kirk Evans started building their craft beer dream in 1995, opening the doors of the original Muskoka Brewery in June 1996. Today, Muskoka Brewery is owned and operated by Todd Lewin and Bob MacDonald. The duo have transformed a small craft brewery (8,000 sq ft) to a large production facility (40,000 sq ft).

Muskoka Brewery President, Todd Lewin describes the company’s growth since he began with the company in 2010, “We’ve been fortunate to achieve some good growth over the past eight years. In terms of beer volume, we’re about six times as big as when I got here and have also ventured into the distilling business. In the same time frame, our team has grown to meet this demand, adding 100 team members to expand our operations and market reach.”

Lewin adds, “Based on the support from both locals and tourists, our taproom and patio have more than doubled in size since 2017. The patio has really enhanced that outdoor Muskoka experience in the warmer months. In 2019, we’re going to be adding an events space to accommodate bigger groups and dial up events like our Venture Fest, Winter Village and Muskoka Hullabaloo.”

Alongside its award-winning craft beers, Muskoka Brewery has recently launched a distillation program, which produces one of Ontario’s most celebrated dry gins.

Muskoka Brewery’s Signature Craft Beers

  • Ebb & Flow : this low alcohol beer pours a pale straw colour and offers aromas bursting with grapefruit, lime and tropical fruit.

Huntsville Brewhouse offers a perfect date night for Ontario craft beer lovers.

Huntsville Brewhouse

59 Main St E , 705-789-7931

Looking to visit a craft brewery in Huntsville, Ontario?

One of Muskoka’s favourite breweries, Lake of Bays Brewing in Baysville , launched its own brewpub in downtown Huntsville in May, 2018. The inspiration to open the Huntsville Brewhouse came from wanting to provide a unique experience that combined quality small batch, handcrafted brewing with locally inspired food offerings.

Visit Huntsville Brewhouse and you’ll find a dining room that can accomodate 105 hungry craft beer lovers. Guests can sip fresh beer while watching staff tend to the onsite microbrewery. The interior of Huntsville Brewhouse features reclaimed wood and offers visitors a casual, industrial vibe.

Of course, fresh craft beer is brewed on site, with the tasting bar offering 16 taps to sip and sample through.

Chef Brian Stone trained at the Royal York Hotel and Deerhurst Resort before developing the Huntsville Brewhouse’s menu. Kevin Schmidtke from Lake of Bays Brewing shared, “Our Brewhouse burger with a couple of ringers is the most ordered item with Blackened Rainbow Trout Tacos coming in at a close second.”

Sip craft beer paired with dishes made of local Muskoka ingredients at Bracebridge Barrelhouse.

Bracebridge Barrelhouse

295 Wellington St Unit #15 ,  705-645-2122

Bracebridge Barrelhouse opened in 2020. It’s the third addition to the Lake of Bays Brewing empire. The original brewery is located in Baysville and a lively restaurant and beer bar can be found at Huntsville Brewhouse.

Kevin Schmidtke Director of Restaurants at Lake of Bays Brewing Company shared, “We use wood and industrial materials to give a rustic Muskoka feel to our restaurants. There are historic panels which reflect the regions history, murals and design work by local artisans which are also representative of the Muskoka region. The Bracebridge Barrelhouse has over 25 oak barrels incorporated into the décor.”

Both the Huntsville Brewhouse and Bracebridge Barrelhouse have microbreweries in operation on site, which offers guests a truly memorable experience.

Hop up at the bar at Bracebridge Barrelhouse and you’ll find 16 taps, which feature a mix of core beers and seasonals. You’ll always find Sparkhouse, Starboard, Foghorn, Paddle On, Switchback, Lift Lock and Off the Grid. Popular seasonal beers include a Pumpkin Ale during Autumn and a Jule Bryg Danish Christmas Lager.

Schmidtke added, “Due to the fact we have microbreweries in both locations the brewers get to experiment with lots of one offs, which we have subsequently begun canning in limited runs. These have proven very popular as they are only available at our restaurants. Some of the recent brews are, Pinky and The Grain, Spring Maple and Petal Power.”

Of all the Muskoka breweries Lake of Bays Brewing’s new barrelhouse in Bracebridge is our favourite place to enjoy fresh beer over a delicious dinner. Chef Martin Belzile crafts a menu that utilizes fresh local ingredients.

  • Smoked Trout Salad : Georgian Bay Rainbow Trout, dried Bala cranberries, Four Seasons Farms baby greens, granola
  • Warm Brie Wheel : Windmill Bakery baguette croutons, spiced summer berry compote, caramelized walnuts
  • Pulled Chicken Flatbread : roast pulled chicken, three cheese blend, sriracha mayo, tomatoes, arugula
  • Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich : fried chicken thigh, crispy onions, bacon, creamy slaw, Anchor Bar sauce, pretzel bun
  • Mac & Cheese : monterey jack, pecorino, aged cheddar, gruyere cheeses in a creamy white sauce, topped with herbed spent grain crumble and parmesan

Clear Lake Brewing near Port Carling features a craft brewery, restaurant and retail store.

Clear Lake Brewing

4651 Southwood Rd, Torrance , 705-762-0234

Clear Lake Brewing first opened its doors in August, 2017 near Bala and Port Carling in Muskoka.

Founders Greg Knight, Rob Wilson and Kit Redding were inspired to launch Clear Lake Brewing because they wanted to open a new business in the small village of Torrance.

Step inside the Muskoka brewpub and you’ll find 8 taps at the bar. Seven pour Clear Lake Brewing’s in-house brands with the other offering featuring a rotating guest brewery or cider.

Rob Wilson explains Clear Lake Brewing’s craft beer production, “We produce all of our core brands year round. Our Cranberry Radler is most popular in summer, but is still available year round. Our number one beer is our Session Ale, we also offer an IPA, Honey Cream, Porter, Pilsner and Amber Ale.”

After sipping through a flight of fresh Muskoka craft beer wag your finger down Chef Jacob Mussen’s menu. Wilson explains the Clear Lake Brewing food philosophy, “We make good pub food that pairs well with our beers. Our craft beer is a key ingredient in a few of our dishes. We also work closely with two local businesses: Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh make up our cran radler beer and Don’s Bakery in Bala produces our breads, buns and desserts.”

Popular dishes at Clear Lake Brewing’s restaurant include Grilled Reuben Panini, Pulled Pork Sammy, Chicken Caesar Wrap, and a signature burger.

Clear Lake Brewing’s retail shop offers hoodies, t-shirts, hats, glassware as well as growlers and kegs. You’ll also find a fridge filled with canned beer to take back to the dock to share with family and friends.

Clear Lake Brewing’s Signature Craft Beers

  • Cran Radler : subtle tartness of locally-sourced  cranberries complimenting a hint of blood orange.
  • Session Ale : a lower alcohol beer that balances malt and hop flavours for a clean finish.
  • American IPA : Munich-style balance of malt, with El Dorado hops imparting bold tropical fruit flavours of pineapple and mango. On the nose, hints of pear, watermelon and stone fruits.

Katalyst Brewing is Muskoka’s newest craft brewery. It’s located in the historic Granary Building in downtown Bracebridge, formerly the home of Muskoka Brewing from 1994 to 2012.

Katalyst Brewing was initially started in 2016 by husband and wife team, Mark and Krystal Verok. The duo originally launched the Ontario beer brand as a contract brewery based in Toronto . Krystal initially got Mark interested in beer making when they first started dating, acting as the, “c(k)atalyst for his venture into the brewing world.”

So what inspired Krystal and Mark to open a craft brewery in Muskoka? “We looked in Toronto and couldn’t find the right building that had what we were looking for so we started looking outside the city. After a bit of a search we found the building in Bracebridge we are in now and liked the location and history. We also spent a lot of time in Muskoka over the years and decided it would be a great place to live full time,” said Mark.

Katalyst Brewing opened its doors in Bracebridge in December, 2019. Skip inside the craft brewery and you’ll find ten taps at the bar, as well as juice boxes, kombucha, cold-brew coffee and other non-alcoholic options.

So what beer styles should you expect at Katalyst Brewing? Co-owner Mark Verok says, “Most of the beers will be rotating, and we plan on releasing a new beer every two weeks.” He has a penchant for smokey porters to pilsners and experimenting with sour and barrel aged beers.

The Granary Building is shared with several other local businesses in Bracebridge including Sully’s Muskoka. Katalyst Brewing occupies 2,500 of the buildings 20,000 square feet. Ask to get a tour of the production area and you’ll find a 10hl system featuring 6 fermenters.

The brewery in Bracebridge also offers a retail shop offering a branded merchandise and swag including hats, toques, sweaters, t-shirts and glassware. Cottagers and local Muskoka craft beer lovers can also purchase 64oz growlers and kegs.

Canvas Brewing is the latest craft brewery to launch in Muskoka.

Canvas Brewing

12 John St , 705-784-2080

Canvas Brewing opened in the Spring of 2020, making it Muskoka’s newest craft brewery.

Located just east of Huntsville’s swing bridge, the massive facility features a craft brewery, tap room, outdoor patio, rooftop patio and a 3200 sq. ft. event space popular for corporate events and weddings.

Home to a 20HL Canadian-made brewhouse, Canvas Brewing offers a creative offering of local craft beer. The Huntsville brewery’s signature is the Canvas Kolsch, a German -inspired lagered ale.

Other popular beers at Canvas Brewing include American Wheat Ale, Parkside Pale Ale, Ember, Hefeweizen and IPA.

Visit the tap room to sample from over 20 fresh brews, many of which are one-off seasonals that switch up throughout the year.

If you’re feeling peckish, brewery management encourage visitors to support the local food trucks located in the parking lot out front. You’re welcome to eat your take out paired with a flight of fresh Canvas Brewing beers.

Canvas Brewing

Huntsville’s hometown craft brewery

Now booking your events, horizon hazy ipa, canvas brewing co..

Canvas Brewing Co is Huntsville’s newest craft brewery, born out of a love for the local landscape and a passion for fresh, well-made craft beer.

Kolsch, our debut brew is a German-inspired lagered ale with the flavour of an ale and the crisp finish of a lager. With a sweet, malty aroma and flavour, Canvas Kolsch finishes dry and refreshing with a subtle hint of German hops. Our second beer, Ember, is an easy drinking, smooth red ale with hints of toffee and caramel.
