WHO says people without symptoms probably account for about 6 percent of spread of the coronavirus, at most.

Celebrity Cruises CEO: Passengers Will Be Asked About Vaccinations

Leon County Judge John Cooper on June 30, 2022, in a screen grab from The Florida Channel.

Passengers 12 and older must complete a health questionnaire before boarding, with separate protocols onboard for people who are unvaccinated.

As Florida and the cruise industry struggle over COVID-19 vaccination requirements, the chief executive of Celebrity Cruises said Tuesday her company’s passengers will continue to be asked about their vaccination status to assure ships are “safe and healthy.”

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Miami-based Celebrity, told members of the Economic Club of Florida that the company is voluntarily following recommendations of experts at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means passengers age 12 and older must complete a health questionnaire before boarding, with separate protocols onboard for people who are unvaccinated.

The company also continues to work with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office, as Florida has banned businesses from requiring customers to show documentation of being vaccinated --- a concept known as “vaccine passports.”

But Lutoff-Perlo said Celebrity must also listen to the “school of public opinion,” which requires cruise businesses to operate “in a safe and healthy environment.”

“At the end of the day it doesn't matter what the governor of the state of Florida says. It doesn't matter what the CDC says. Our business depends on operating in a safe and healthy environment,” said Lutoff-Perlo, who appeared by video during the economic club’s lunch meeting at the Florida State University Alumni Center.

Lutoff-Perlo, whose cruise line is a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group, said ships are sailing with fully vaccinated crews and at least 95 percent of the passengers fully vaccinated.

“The state of Florida does not tell us we can't ask (whether people are vaccinated). They tell us we can't require it,” Lutoff-Perlo said. “And so, we are working within those constraints to ensure that we live up to our commitment, as a brand, that we will sail at least 95 percent vaccinated.”

On Sunday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams backed arguments from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings that the state’s vaccine-passport ban violates the First Amendment and what is known as the dormant Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The Miami-based Williams wrote that the law is a “content-based restriction” on speech, as it targets documentation but allows businesses to request other information from customers about issues such as vaccinations. The ruling at least temporarily cleared the way for Norwegian to require customers to show documentation that they have been vaccinated.

The governor’s office has said it plans to appeal the ruling to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The cruise industry shut down in March 2020 after high-profile outbreaks of COVID-19 onboard ships.

Celebrity, which spent most of the 15 months of its shutdown planning how to reopen safety, caters to baby boomers and Gen X people.

Lutoff-Perlo said her company continues to work with DeSantis’ office on protocols for unvaccinated guests. But she said current rules have resulted in many of those potential passengers deciding not to cruise at this time. The current rules include limiting areas on board that unvaccinated guests can access. Also, unvaccinated guests are not allowed into some foreign ports.

“We’re finding our way,” Lutoff-Perlo said. “So, while it hasn't been easy, we're still able to do exactly what we said we were going to do and provide a safe and healthy environment for our guests.”

In this file photo, the Norwegian Gem cruise ship leaves the Port of Miami on April 14, 2020 in Miami Beach, Florida. The first trip of the Norwegian Gem after a pandemic-induced hiatus, is scheduled to take off from Miami on Aug. 15.

Cool Cruiser

Can anyone tell me what the questions are on the health form you fill out before boarding?

Pretty basic. Have you had a cold, or the flu, or gastrointestinal illness in the past week. Have witnessed them asking if a pax was pregnant, but that's not on the form.

2theship

Oooh - I hope she was. I mean I know that there are some guidelines as to how late in your pregnancy you can cruise but being asked if you're pregnant and you aren't, that would be a bummer.

As to the original question, the form really just wants to know if you've been throwing up in the last 24 hours.

What happens if you answer yes to those questions on the questionaire....

Anyone had that experience?

woldridge

Attached is the questionnaire.

cruise health questionnaire.pdf

If you answer yes to the questions you get a free examination by the ship's Dr. or a nurse who decides whether it is safe for you to sail.

Based on our experience on Feb. 16, if you answer yes to a Q, it's no sail for you.

While checking in, there was a young couple beside us. From what we could gather while we were being processed, they were being refused boarding because she had some sort of gastro issue the day before and ticked off yes on the form. They were pleading that it was probably something she ate but the Celebrity Reps, three were present in addition to the check in person, were adamant.

Kind of felt sorry for them as they walked away confused as to what they were going to do.

No nurse exam, just no sail.

If your boarding is refused, are you given a refund of your fare?

Nearly everybody lies.

Unfortunately, you are probably right. This story today is probably a result of someone not being honest.

Royal Caribbean cruise ship hit by virus: http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2013/03/08/20640456.html

phoenix_dream

I can't imagine being completely honest. I have had sinus problems and sometimes allergies for my entire adult life - completely not contagious. I would be crazy to answer yes to the question about a runny nose. A few years ago I had a cough that lingered for three months after a cold due to sinusitus - again, not contagious but took forever to go away even with medication. Many people who travel, overeat, over-embibe etc., may end up with some temporary, and also non-contagious gastro issues not to be named here. Certainly there is a good argument that if you believe you have noro, or if you have a case of a serious upper respiratory virus you should fess up so as not to spread it to the whole ship. I was under the impression, however, (seemingly contradicted by what I have read on this thread so far) that even if you were sick with something like noro you could still board, but would be quarantined until you were better. Wonder if times have changed or if I was mistaken.

JJPacer

A woman with a cold & bad cough was allowed to board but was quarantined for 3 days. She did not stay in her cabin. By the end of the cruise, I and many other people had her cold and cough. She was very selfish to expose her fellow passengers to her illness.

However, I agree that there are non contagious conditions that if you answere truthfully, would put you in the position of being denied boarding or quarantined. As long as you know your symptoms are not contagious and due to a non contagious condition then it's best to answer 'no'.

30,000+ Club

They also normally ask if you have been exposed to any in the past several days with flu, fever, intestinal issues, etc.

 We were on a recent cruise with a doctor as a passenger. Natually, he had been seeing sick people. Feel sure this applies to lots of nurses too.

Others may not agree ... but feel those Health Forms are a silly waste of time.

whirlybird3

whirlybird3

If you answer yes to any of the questions, you may have a brief exam from the ship nurse or doctor to determine if you may have a very contagious GI illness. If you do, you may be escorted to your room for isolation along with medicine. The medical team will check in on you and clear you out of your cabin once you are not contagious. This is the best for all of the passengers... By not being honest, many people could be ill during their long planned vacation.

This gave me a good chuckle. You know for sure you had her cold and cough, not one passed along by another of the 3000 or 4000 people on your cruise.

If she was allowed to board and the cruiseline knew she was so contagious shame on them I guess. But seriously, no cruise line is going to tell someone with a cold, especially in the winter, that can't cruise.

As a former check in agent, we were not authorized to deny boarding to anyone who answered yes to the questions. We had to speak with a supervisor who then called one of the ship's medical personnel for further examination.

If you have a cold, you will be evaluated but not isolated unless you have a fever. This person will receive a review of hand-washing & how to avoid coughing in exposing others.

Please be honest on the questioner. We all would like to enjoy our cruise without being ill. If you are ill, taking time to rest in the cabin with the medical team checking in on you is not such a bad idea.

We were refused boarding last Easter on a RCI cruise from Southampton as my daughter had been travel sick on the way down and was still poorly as we waited to board. The ship's doctor came off to speak to us and said that they could not take the risk of her going on board! The ship had been hit twice before with bad norovirus outbreaks so I could appreciate his concern. We were given a cruise credit for the money paid to be used on another sailing, so at least were not out of pocket. We are consequently sailing on the Eclipse in two weeks time (without our daughter!!:)).

I agree completely, except for the part about shame on the cruiseline for letting her board. Let's be realistic, folks. The average adult catches 2 colds per year, the average child many more (don't recall the exact number). For the vast majority of people they are an inconvenience but not a serious health hazard, and have nowhere near the 'ick' factor of noro. They are also the types of viruses that go around in public virtually always (there are over 200 varieties of them), so one is always running the risk of catching a cold no matter where they are! The average cold lasts 7-10 days before symptoms subside, and you can be contagious that entire time (granted, more contagious when the symptoms are very active). I cannot imagine the logic in denying boarding to someone with a cold, nor to expect them to stay in their room for that period of time.

Certainly I would expect someone with very active symptoms to either stay in their cabin voluntarily, or take very careful precautions to avoid sneezing or coughing on someone. They should also wash their own hands often and avoid touching highly public areas. But to deny them boarding or quarantine them for a simple cold? Very unrealistic in my opinion.

I did add I guess to "shame on the cruiseline.";):D

As I have asthma and can get pretty sick when I catch a cold, I'm very careful when I cruise to wash, wash wash my hands and avoid (read runaway, and I mean runaway) from anyone sneezing or coughing. But it isn't fool proof, in fact, my husband continues to have a cold he picked up on a cruise last week.

Noro is another issue. As hard as it is for me to fathom anyone would want to leave their cabin while suffering from noro, apparently some do. Also, not washing hands after using the bathroom well UCK.

My guess is your odds of catching a cold on a plane are better than on a cruise ship.

The bad part with noro is that you can literally still be shedding the virus up to two weeks after you come down with the sickness, even though you may feel fine a few days later. And unlike many other viruses including cold viruses, noro is extremely contagious - it only takes a tiny, tiny exposure to transmit. Not everyone exposed develops the virus of course, but it takes just a very small amount - one of the most virulent viruses around according to the CDC. I sympathize with people for whom even the common cold can cause an issue like asthma, but it is just virtually impossible to avoid those viruses which is why I could not see preventing someone from embarking, or quarantining them. I myself almost always end up with a raging sinus infection when I catch a cold so I can sympathize (not life-threatening but painful and annoying). But to those who suggest shame on the ship for letting them come onboard with a cold??? No way. Wishing good health to all on their upcoming cruises:D

(I have bolded the part above to which I am responding)

Mr Chew & I have been on two "plague ships" both of them longer cruises on Holland America. We were in Code Red for the majority of the cruise on each ship. In each case, Mr Chew caught noro and I did not. I was chatting with the assistant cruise director the first time, and he said that the spouse/significant other/roommate of the noro-sick person almost never came down with it themselves. I certainly did not, and on both cruises I started asking around, no spouse or SO or roomie of someone with noro had caught it. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I think that's pretty interesting. I know that when I was growing up, and then later with my own family, if one of us had a flu virus, it went through all of us!

I will add that I spent most of Mr Chew's quarantine in the cabin with him (well, not too close!) even though I was not quarantined, because I just did not understand how I could not be carrying the virus around with me, even though I wasn't sick.

That was wise, as I understand that you can actually be shedding the virus if you caught it, but never developed symptoms. It is so very, very contagious, especially the one going around the world right now. Interesting that in many cases the cabin mate does not catch. As you say, when it goes around our house we all usually end up with it, albeit some hit harder than others. Oh well - enough talk about maladies! Let's think good thoughts and hope we have good luck avoiding it on our cruises:D

Cool Cruiser

Our cruise leaves tomorrow and we did not receive the health questionnaire from Celebrity today.  I also can't find it on the App.  Is Celebrity still requiring this form to be completed 24 hours before sailing?

The Health Questionnaire is in the App. Or at least that’s what my cruise email states.  (Sorry - just read that you can’t find it …

cruzzzinma

You should see it before you board. I don’t think we ever got in 24 hours in advance.

Just looked at the app. On mine, it’s under Check In . The Health Questionnaire is already there but I can’t access it yet since we aren’t sailing for a couple of weeks.

Arizona Wildcat

As said 24 hours ahead.  Takes a minute or less.  Go to checkin on the app.

cruiserchuck

I am sailing tomorrow, and cannot access the health questionnaire or check in section on the app today.  I could access check in yesterday, but it said it was too early to do the health questionnaire.

Sailing tomorrow also and health questionnaire is definitely not available on the app or Celebrity website.  Perhaps they are no longer requiring it or, most likely, it's another Celebrity computer glitch!

Just show up and do it at check in at the pier.

It might be too early in the day.  The health questions usually appear 24 hours before check-in time, so it could be active beginning at say, 11 am the day before your cruise.

As mentioned above, the check-in agent will be able to ask and enter your answers.

seems as though they still require the health information as we just received an email about doing it and downloading app, which I did ages ago.   This email is a repeat we received.

You can do it at check in. Takes maybe a minute.

That is exactly what happened to us too. I cannot access the health questionnaire but could see it yesterday and said too soon.  🤷‍♀️  Makes zero sense. I'd love to just have everything ready and done but I guess not.

When checking in at the pier today, we were asked two health questions, and we were done.  The representative asked if we had the COVID vaccine, and if we had any COVID symptoms in the last 24 hours.  It took about 30 seconds and we were good to go.

Like

Last month we were able to answer the questionnaire 2 days before our Reflection cruise. Love the consistency.  😁

Haha

We are leaving on Beyond tomorrow and I did the health questionnaire on the app yesterday. If I try to go into check-in now on the app, it says "check-in has checked-out" , try again later or complete at the port.

See you tomorrow on Beyond! 😄

Really wouldn't worry about it.   Even when I fill it in they ask me the same questions at check in.

I’m not. Just my Type A wanting to have it all done early! 😋

And you’re spot on! They will ask even if I did it beforehand.

broadwaybaby123

I know this is for Royal but it may still apply since they're owned by the same company.  I just got off Anthem Of The Seas, they sent us a notification about it when it was time for us to fill it out in our app.  That came about a day in advance and takes about 3 min.

Has anyone answered "no" to the Covid vax question and if so what happened next? Asking for a friend :)

I don't know what is up with the app, but I can't even get logged in.  I put in the correct information, click sign in, and nothing happens.  Is it normally glitchy?  When I did check-in yesterday, it said I was "required" to download the app.

Not good.  If on a TA you would be denied boarding.  Would guess in that case you would be required to provide a negative test and possibly another at the pier.  Likely not the do it yourself kind that are on the honor system.

Assuming your question is serious; the Celebrity app and mobile website are stated kindly - somewhere between abysmal and often impossible.

You absolutely do not need the app or a phone.  All can be done at the pier.  Just takes longer by a few minutes.  Try clearing your cache, deleting and reinstalling the app.  That MIGHT help.

PS for some reason mine has been fine for several weeks.

Thanks!  Good to know it is not really required.  I thought that was quite odd.

Just boarding in FLL for a 7 day around the USVI.

There's generally a good deal of vaguely worded info on Celebrity's website and many FAQs are just not to be found.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

celebrity cruises health questionnaire

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
