Charlie Puth (born December 2, 1991) is an American pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known for featuring in Wiz Khalifa’s international No. 1 single “See You Again”, hailing from Rumson, New Jersey, U.S.

Born and raised in Rumson, New Jersey, Puth began to explore his musicality during high school where he started uploading acoustic song covers to YouTube. After graduating, the singer enrolled at Berklee College for Music by which time Puth had begun generating significant online attention for his videos. In October 2011 Puth’s national profile was raised to new levels with an announcement from Ellen DeGeneres that she had signed the singer and duet partner Emily Luther to her label. DeGeneres had heard the pair’s cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You”, which the duo later played on the show, as well as Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and the self-penned “Break Again”.

Despite the exposure afforded Puth, the singer departed DeGeneres’ eleveneleven Records in 2013 and singed with Atlantic. Prior to the arrangement with Atlantic, Puth had recorded and self-released a pair of albums, “The Otto Tunes” (2010) and “Ego” 2013, however the records are only available through online music streaming services. In February 2015, Puth released his official debut single “Marvin Gaye, featuring guest vocals from pop singer Meghan Trainor. Rising to No. 61 on the Billboard 200 and topping the charts in New Zealand, the single proved an internationally popular release and introduced the singer to a worldwide market.

Puth enjoyed his greatest success to date however contributing to the Wiz Khalifa single “See You Again”, which topped the singles chart in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Sweden as well as a host of other countries. The single was taken from the “Furious 7: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” in light of the recent death of actor Paul Walker and earned platinum certification in a number of countries. Later in 2015 the singer issued his debut EP “Some Type of Love”, which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Heatseekers Chart in May. Following the release Puth issued the single, “Nothing But Trouble”, featuring rapper Lil Wayne, which appeared on the soundtrack to the documentary “808: The Movie” in June 2015.

Live reviews

At Trees in Dallas, TX 3/11/16

Great show! Opening, Sophie Beem has got the voice, movies and looks for it is only a matter of time before she blows up. The following act was Phoebe Ryan which she had a couple of songs that were catchy, however I feel she is still working on her stage performance. It looked and felt like she was trying to hard on crowd interaction, but she was recording herself, so give it some time. Charlie Puth simply outstanding performance. He sound the same recorded or live. Between songs he took a moment or two and talked about different things from his background in music to how he came up with some of his songs (did not know "One Call Away" was wrote for his mother do to him buying a house and living out in LA). He seemed to be very humble and enjoyed talking to the crowd to the point of him grabbing a girl's cellphone to take a video from stage. Here is an article that happened at the show (@ Trees in Dallas 3/11/16)

I drove three and half hours one way for this show and it was worth the drive from Okla to TX. I'm in the 30-40 (male) age group if this might help. Buy your tickets now for his shows sellout quick.

At just 23, Charlie Puth seems to be making all the right moves in the music industry after featuring on Wiz Khalifa's global smash 'See You Again' and upcoming mega-hit 'Marvin Gaye' featuring Meghan Trainor. The pop and R & B singer/songwriter has a fairly androgynous voice that has been praised for its silky smooth quality and emotive undertones. There is definitely a fanbase gathering and as Charlie has been known on the scene for a few years, he has a following for his early tours.

He holds himself with a likeable confidence as it is pretty clear performing live is something he does not have a lot of experience with yet. There are a couple of awkward interludes between tracks and a few bum introductions yet in general it is a pacy show which showcases the vocal well. As he only has a couple of musicians joining him tonight, there really is nowhere to hide and Charlie has to stand up straight to this as he plays his first EP 'Some Type of Love' in full. It is suitably emotive and allows him real freedom to show off the voice and this goes over well along with an acoustic version of 'See You Again' to end a performance from a very promising vocalist.

I have loved listening to Charlie since before he was even famous. He inspires me so much, and I really look up to him because he is an incredible performer and he worked so hard to get to where he is today.

However.... last night I was really disappointed. That was my third Charlie Puth concert, and the only one that I’ve ever had the privilege of sitting in the front row at. It was my birthday present to sit so close to the stage, so I made him a sign that I worked really hard on. The moment Charlie came on stage, he saw my sign from the corner of his eye but wouldn’t read it. He just said “I’ve seen that girl and her sign before” and blew it off. It was rude. Like he wouldn’t even take 2 seconds to even see what it said! And I’ve NEVER made him a sign before, so I’m not sure what he was talking about. Then throughout his performance, he wouldn’t acknowledge his fans. He just did what he had to do and then left. It was so quick. I don’t know if Charlie was in a bad mood or something, but it was very disappointing considering all the money and effort all these people put in to see him.

It was amazing! Charlie is so freaking cute to see in person and all of his facial expression though. He was an exquisite live performer, i enjoy all of the songs so so much! The musicians were also a good package. Love them. Although i must say i was so disappointed about Full Color, i think they wasn't professional enough to organise the crowd. There were rumours that the people who had festival tickets could enter the golden priority area. No wonder the golden priority area became too crowded, i think.

I hate to say that the equipments were also not good enough. I was standing under the big speakers and it didn't produce a good quality of sound. It was deafening.

And also disappointed for the 'no shirtless' rule. It was freaking ridiculous. We all knew that Charlie was stifling hot, poor him that he couldn't take his shirt off.

Overall, it was okay. I love to see him again near the future but obviously not from the same promotor. Although thanks to Full Color for bringing him to Jakarta.

It was a great show me and my mom went she didn't have a great time because there was some girls behind her that kept on kicking her in the back but all in all Charlie was great and Shawn was amazing if I had another chance to go see them both I would hopefully next time I can be closer or possibly meet them they are both so down to earth especially Shawn he's such a gentleman as he says in his songs I've seen him be a gentleman in so many of his videos and I believe Charlie is a gentleman too he's so sweet and funny I will hold on to last nights memory forever and ever I woke up this morning and couldn't talk I lost my voice screaming for both of them but I don't care it was worth it oh and I also bought a Shawn Mendes blanket that is so soft I love it

This is the best concert I have been to!!! I have been to many concerts and this one is the best by far. Charlie puts on a great show and has a great time with the audience. He lets you sing along and makes it so much fun. I went the first night in Toronto and it was amazing and I think I need to go to another one.I love all of his songs and I listen to them 24/7 no joke. His songs mean so much to me. When I was getting through the hardest part of my life his songs really did help me. I just want to say thank you for what you have done because it really does help me every single day just reminding me that every day is a great day. And I really hope to meet you one day. Thank you for inspiring me so much!!!

I seen Charlie Puth at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Monday, September 17. It honestly wasn’t really a concert, it was more of a Q & A from moderator who asked him really good questions that most people who interview him don’t ask. The setting was very intimate, only 200 people seated. Charlie did sing 3 of his hit songs at the end of the Q & A...From Voicenotes. He did this all with no band. Singing with just his keyboard. He did an amazing job. His voice is amazing live. This was my first time seeing him. I definitely plan on going to see him in concert next time he’s in LA. It was definitely worth the money to see him.

AMAZING!!!! I loved it so much! I loved the band he was playing with. Such great teamwork. And how real was he was in the concert was cool too. He wasn’t just a celebrity preforming, he was a person, just like us singing to us, wanting us to have an amazing time. And I did have an amazing time. My mom and I really enjoyed him playing and he ever comes to my town again, I would see him again. (Pun intended) I love his music and his song writing style. And would love to see him live in concert again. Thank you for letting me write a review.

Oh My Gosh!!! At the concert, Charlie Puth was on another level. He sang all song as perfectly as the recorded ones! His high note gave me the goosebump. He knew how to serve his fans. He took his shirt off!! That was so memorable. And the best one is when he sang see you again. Even before he started to sing, I had already cried.

The best concert I have ever had in my life. Thanks Charlie Puth. You will always be in my heart and other puthinatorz's hearts.

Thanks for that memorable night. It was really valuable for my life.

Charlie Puth and Hailee Steinfeld put on a great show. Singing new songs along with their big hits they made the crowd go wild and made everyone so happy to be sharing this experience. Prior to this concert, in which I took my children to see, I knew very little of either artist but after listening to them and seeing their performance I can say that I will be wanting to listen to more

Also, the location for the concert was perfect. I would definitely go there again for another show.

All About Charlie Puth’s Fiancée, Brooke Sansone

preview for Shenseea Sings Selena Gomez and 'Lick' with Megan Thee Stallion in a Game of Song Association | ELLE

On Sept. 7, 2023, Charlie Puth announced his engagement to girlfriend Brooke Sansone with a post on Instagram about their shared pizza night.

“I flew to New York to ask my best friend to marry me, and she said yes,” Puth wrote in the caption. “I am the happiest, best version of myself and it is all because of you Brookie. I love you endlessly forever and ever and ever.”

In the carousel, Sansone’s pear-shaped diamond engagement ring is visible as they split up their slices and take a celebratory selfie. Now that things are getting more serious, here’s everything to know about Charlie Puth’s fiancée, Brooke Sansone.

Who is Brooke Sansone?

In her free time, Sansone has a passion for fashion, and co-runs an Instagram account about outfit curation called Thee Closet Next Door.

She also frequently posts about traveling, another favorite hobby.

How did they meet?

The pair grew up together and were friends, according to an interview Puth gave on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show .

“(She’s) someone that I grew up with,” he said. “As my life gets more turbulent and I travel everywhere, it’s really nice to have someone close to you that you’ve known for a very long time...and I would assume that when times inevitably are hard in the future—because what is life without valleys and peaks—she would be there for me as well.”

He added, “Honestly, I get so scared of people now, like, I can’t really walk anywhere for whatever reason, and I think the more that happens, the more I just want to retreat to someone that I’ve known for a long time. I’m not really interested in going out like I used to and being crazy.”

How long have Puth and Sansone been romantically involved?

Rumors about the pair started in the summer of 2022. That July, Sansone shared photos from “the cape” on Instagram featuring both of their families.

In September of that year, the two were seen at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City along with a few of Puth’s family members. They went Instagram official in December, when Puth shared some photo booth pictures from his 31st birthday.

“Ohhhhh I’m NOT a loser…’cause I didn’t lose her!!! (Happy birthday to me.),” he captioned the pic.

Their red-carpet debut took place in February 2023 at Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala in Los Angeles.

What has Puth said about wedding planning?

In mid-December, the singer opened up about how intense the process is to People . He said generally he’d prefer to keep it private: “I like to keep some things in the confines of our home, of course, because stuff gets out so easily,” he began but added that “planning a wedding is a lot like planning a tour. It’s probably even more intense.”

What has Puth said about his relationship with Sansone?

Sansone is a family friend. Their relationship, he told People in December, is “ kind of just in the DNA.”

“I’ve known her,” he continued. “I mean, she grew up one town over from me in New Jersey, and my parents know her parents. Her dad has been best friends with my dad since the third grade, so it’s kind of like I’m just gaining another family right away, even before the wedding. And they’ve also known me before the fame, before everything, so I can’t think of a better situation, quite frankly.”

Puth and Sansone frequently attend red carpets together.

Most recently, on April 13, Puth and Sansone walked the carpet for the 2024 Breakthrough Prize Awards in Los Angeles. Sansone wore a red dress with an open back and black strappy heels. Puth was dressed in a black suit and accessorized with black and white beaded necklaces.

Sansone was also Puth’s date to the 2024 Emmys, where she wore a tiered black dress with black pumps. Puth coordinated with her in a white suit and silver star-studded black button-down shirt.

Taylor Swift’s Cringe Charlie Puth Lyric Actually Makes a Lot of Sense

PIANO PRINCE

The line about Charlie Puth deserving to be a “bigger artist” is bad—but not enough of us are talking about how silly “a tattooed golden retriever” sounds too.

Fletcher Peters

Entertainment Reporter

Do you know the lyric? The lyric heard round the world? You’ll find it on the title track of Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department : “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate/ We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” Swift croons on the second track. It’s kind of a backhanded compliment: “We like you, Charlie, but those Grammy nominations and multi-platinum singles aren’t really all that great.”

Fans and haters of Swift alike have joined in harmony to ask : Where did this Charlie Puth infatuation come from? My follow-up question, of course: Does Swift know the phrase “I’m hungies?” Let’s hope Travis Kelce doesn’t get his hands on that one; seems like a phrase he’d quickly become a fan of.

The answer is that, the closer you look at Swift’s interactions with Puth online over the years, the more obvious this connection should’ve been to the Swifties. In fact, it’s perhaps a little shocking Puth himself doesn’t cameo on “The Tortured Poets Department,” harmonizing with Swift on the line following his shoutout (perhaps the most egregious line on the entire album): “I scratched your head, you fell asleep/ Like a tattooed golden retriever.” I can practically hear Puth singing it now.

The Puth street goes both ways. While Swift has approached Puth with compliments in the past, Puth has also shouted out Swift a handful of times. The connection appears to begin somewhere around 2017, when Puth was gearing up to release his second studio album, Voicenotes , and Swift was making a huge comeback with Reputation . In a 2017 Genius video explaining his lead single “Attention,” Puth starts by connecting his song to Swift’s debut album.

“I couldn’t come out with a song like this as a brand-new artist. I kind of had to Taylor Swift it,” Puth said. “In 2006, when she put out ‘My Song,’ it was very approachable. It could be applied to a lot of situations. I took that same approach.”

Years later, in July 2021, Puth took to his Instagram story to praise Swift for being “such a genius,” specifically talking about why he loves “Teardrops on My Guitar.” After explaining why the chords make the song unique, Puth went on to say, “I just wanted to say that I think it’s so wonderful.”

We’ve known Puth is a Swiftie for quite some time, but when does Swift herself enter the picture? Not long after his “Teardrops on My Guitar” praise hit Insta. In August 2021, Puth left a note on Swift’s very first TikTok : “Welcome to Tok fellow Sag,” he commented.

“I’ve lurked your account for ages! Thanks for the welcome, piano prince,” Swift responded, adding a crown emoji. The first seeds of The Tortured Poets Department were planted on TikTok back in 2021.

Recently, in May 2023, Puth created a mash-up of his song “When You’re Sad I’m Sad” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Swift, which he performed on tour . Perhaps Swift can find a way to interpolate this into her Eras Tour, if she really wants Puth to become a “bigger artist.”

There’s an extra layer to this history: Fans have speculated that TTPD is all about Swift’s ex Matty Healy , the frontman of The 1975. That would mean that the guy she’s talking about in “The Tortured Poets Department''—you know, the tattooed golden retriever who ate seven bars of chocolate; remember that The 1975 has a very popular song titled “Chocolate,” although it isn’t about the bars—is Healy.

Flashback to 2018, when Puth released a cover of “If You Leave Me Now” with Boyz II Men. These tweets have since been deleted—and therefore might be fake but look totally real—but Healy appears to have shouted Puth out for the track. “That Charlie Puth and Boyz II Men track is harrrrrd,” Healy allegedly tweeted from his now-inactive Twitter account.

“Thank u matty!” Puth responded.

There are many possible hypothetical situations here: Perhaps Healy reintroduced Swift to Puth’s music. She was a slight fan, but Healy was a huge one, so they ended up talking about him for hours. Or maybe, between 2018 and 2021, Healy stopped listening to Puth, leading Swift to put him back on the right path. But my favorite conspiracy theory is that, in actuality, Swift and Healy’s love of Puth’s music was what brought them together in the first place. That’s the kind of love we all deserve.

This Video Proves Exactly Why Charlie Puth Should Be a Bigger Artist

Taylor Swift says this in the lyrics of her new song, "The Tortured Poets Department." Want to know why? Watch this Puth clip from the Tonight Show.

charlie puth tour 2023 wiki

Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album,  The Tortured Poets Department,  on Friday, April 19. The 31-track LP — really a double-album anthology — is a sprawling collection of moody synth-pop and alt-rock. It contains flourishes of all her previous records, most notably Midnights , Folklore , and Evermore , but very much holds its own artistic weight. The lyrics are some of her wildest, most stream-of-consciousness to date. On the title track, for example, Swift relays (in hilariously blunt detail) some of the mundane activities she and an ex would do together.

Taylor Swift says Charlie Puth "should be a bigger artist." Here's why:

Charlie Puth poses on the red carpet of the Breakthrough Prize Awards and Ceremony

You see, not only can Puth make music with actual instruments and equipment, he can do it with household items.

"My whole thing on TikTok is to prove that anything in this world can be made into music," he told Host Jimmy Fallon in the interview. "Everything has tonality to it."

He then proceeded to prove this by making a completely original beat out of just mug and spoon sounds. By the end, he created a certified banger. Watch for yourself!

Was this the video that crystallized Taylor Swift's glowing opinion of Charlie Puth? Maybe so!

Who is Charlie Puth? Taylor Swift name-checks singer on new album

Taylor Swift released eleventh album The Tortured Poets Department this morning, but it is Charlie Puth who is sharing the headlines.

Swift references the singer on the title track of the LP, a song produced by her long-time collaborator, Jack Antonoff , that comes second on the running order.

She sings: “You smoked, and then ate seven bars of chocolate. We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

The Tortured Poets Department was announced by Swift as she picked up her 13th Grammy in February.

The studio record announcement came as a surprise as the 34-year-old had been expected to next release a Taylor’s Version of 2017 album Reputation.

Swift is currently re-recording her earlier works due to a feud with her management.

The singer had been cagey about The Tortured Poets Department, not releasing any singles or videos in support of the album prior to its release on April 19.

Fans have pounced on the release and have been quick to try to interpret some of the meanings of the songs - and the Charlie Puth reference has been an early talking point.

Who is Charlie Puth?

The American singer, 32, has been releasing music since the Meghan Trainor collaboration with Marvin Gaye in 2015, which went to number one in the UK.

He has had two further top 10 hits in Attention and How Long but nothing has matched the success of See You Again. The 2015 hit was a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa and featured as the emotional end credits theme to Furious 7 as a tribute to late actor Paul Walker.

Puth most recently released third album Charlie in 2022 but, despite his soulful R&B winning him fans and a record deal with Atlantic, his later efforts have not matched his earlier sales.

Even so, fans are still throwing things on stage - much to his apparent displeasure .

What did Taylor Swift say about Charlie Puth?

“You smoked, and then ate seven bars of chocolate. We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” sings Swift, perhaps in relation to his recent decline.

The internet is void of much gossip of any relationship between the pair, with Swift’s search for love being so legendary that she has even parodied herself .

Swift is currently dating American football player Travis Kelche . Since September, Puth has been engaged to his long-term girlfriend Brooke Sansone - who is also from New Jersey.

Some gossip can be found, though, with Puth collaborating with Selena Gomez on 2016 hit We Don’t Talk Anymore.

The pair were quick to confirm they were just friends but Puth changed his tune a year later, telling Billboard that he had been “messed up” by Gomez despite not sleeping with her.

His 2017 song Attention came with lyrics about being strung along by a teasing woman - and then came a 2023 tweet: “Attention is about what you think it’s about,” he wrote and then later deleted.

It’s hardly rap feud stuff, but Swift and Gomez are said to be good friends .

If giving Puth a shout out on The Tortured Poets Department is seen as a rift brewing between the mates, then fans on Reddit and Twitter will be the first to speculate.

From The Blue Nile to Charlie Puth, here are all the artists named in Taylor Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department'

  • Taylor Swift debuted her 11th studio album, "The Dead Poets Department," on Friday.
  • The project is a double album featuring 31 songs, some of which reference other artists.
  • Steve Nicks is mentioned on a track called "Clara Bow," which references a famed actor.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift has done it again.

After dropping her new album "The Tortured Poets Department," the singer dropped jaws by releasing a second part to the album mere hours later called "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology." The double album has a total of 31 songs.

In it, she outlines the loves and losses she's had while paying tribute to some of the artists and celebrities who have influenced her along the way — for better or worse.

Dylan Thomas

charlie puth tour 2023 wiki

Swift also makes a reference to Dylan Thomas , the famed Welsh poet.

In the chorus of her song, Swift sings: "I laughed in your face and said/ 'You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith/ This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots'/ And who's gonna hold you like me?"

Thomas, who is known for his poem, "Do not go gentle into that good night," frequented The Hotel Chelsea in New York City and lived there with his wife before his death in 1953, according to a website about the poet run by his family. The hotel was where Thomas worked on one of his final pieces before he was hospitalized and died.

A plaque outside the hotel was erected about a decade after Thomas' death, commemorating that he "lived and labored last here at the Chelsea Hotel and from here sailed out to die."

Patti Smith

charlie puth tour 2023 wiki

In the same line, Swift also names Patti Smith, a poet and singer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

By mentioning Thomas and Smith, Swift seems to suggest that she and her lost lover can't compare to the great artists who came before them.

Like Thomas, Smith also frequented The Hotel Chelsea and is named and quoted on the historic hotel's website .

"I loved this place, its shabby elegance, and the history it held so possessively… So many had written, conversed, and convulsed in these Victorian dollhouse rooms," Smith once said of the hotel, according to its website.

The Blue Nile

Track nine of "The Dead Poets Department" featured a callout to The Blue Nile, a Scottish band formed in the 1980s. Swift's lyrics reference the band's 1989 song, "The Downtown Lights."

"Drownin' in the Blue Nile/ He sent me 'Downtown Lights'/ I hadn't heard it in a while," the lyrics read.

Swift's former beau Matty Healy said his band, The 1975, drew inspiration from The Blue Nile for their song, "Love It If We Made It."

"That definitely started out as us just killing 'Hats' every night before we went onstage, listening to that record until it broke. It's slightly different; it's like Blue Nile on steroids," Healy told Pitchfork in November 2018. "We wanted it to sound really machine-like, in an industrial sense."

Swift named one song after Clara Bow , an actor who found fame in the 1920s amid the silent film era. Bow is considered the be the original Hollywood "It Girl," according to Biography.com .

"You look like Clara Bow/ In this light, remarkable/ All your life, did you know/ You'd be picked like a rose?" the lyrics read.

Swift's lyrics discuss finding fame, which she appears to relate to Bow.

"I'm not trying to exaggerate/ But I think I might die if I made it, die if I made it/ No one in my small town thought I'd meet these suits in LA," the lyrics read.

Stevie Nicks

Swift also name-dropped Stevie Nicks in "Clara Bow." The legendary singer is known for her solo work and her time in the band Fleetwood Mac.

"You look like Stevie Nicks/ In '75, the hair and lips/ Crowd goes wild at her fingertips/ Half moonshine, a full eclipse," Swift sings.

The pair have a long friendship. They performed together at the 2010 Grammy Awards — just months after Swift was thrust into the spotlight when Ye, formerly Kanye West, snatched the mic from her hands at the 2009 VMAs.

Taylor Swift

Swift finally names herself in "Clara Bow," though it seems to be in a less complimentary light. She sings that she lacks "edge" compared to the star she's praising, whose future is "dazzling."

"You look like Taylor Swift/ In this light, we're lovin' it/ You've got edge, she never did/ The future's bright, dazzling," Swift sings.

It's not the first time Swift mentioned herself by her full name in a song, and she tends to be self-deprecating when she does it.

"Who is Taylor Swift anyway? Ew," she sings in "22," a pop hit off her "Red" album.

The Starting Line

The Starting Line is a pop-punk band Swift referenced in "The Black Dog," the first song on "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology."

"How you don't miss me/ In The Black Dog/ when someone plays The Starting Line / And you jump up/ but she's too young to know this song ," the lyrics read.

Fans online speculated that Swift mentioned The Starting Line as an allusion to her former flame, Healy. Healy's band, The 1975, covered a 2002 song by "The Starting Line" while touring in 2023, according to The Independent .

Kim Kardashian

Although Kim Kardashian is never mentioned by name is Swift's lyrics, many fans and outlets think "ThanK you aIMee" is about the pair's beef.

The song's title has the letters "K," "I," and "M," capitalized, spelling "KIM."

"When I picture my hometown/ There's a bronze spray-tanned statue of you/ And a plaque underneath it/ That threatens to push me down the stairs, at our school," the lyrics read.

The feud began in 2016 when Kardashian defended her former husband Ye — formally known as Kanye West — and his song "Famous."

"I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous," Ye's lyrics read.

Swift's publicist said she was not aware that West planned to describe her as "that bitch" in a February 2016 statement. However, West said in X posts that he and Swift had a phone conversation about the lyric, during which she "gave her blessings."

By July, Kardashian shared a series of snapchats showing a purported phone call between Swift and West . The videos showed Swift and West talking, but there was no direct reference to the lyrics in question. Swift then called out the former couple, sparking a wave of backlash that inspired KimYe fans to use snake emojis to describe Swift.

Swift later dropped her 2017 album "Reputation," which some fans considered a career-shifting album that contains jabs at West and Kardashian.

The feud sparked again in 2020 when the full phone conversation between West and Swift leaked. Fans of Swift noted that the leaked call didn't make reference to the "that bitch" lyric, but Kardashian doubled down on her support for West with X posts.

Taylor Swift pays tribute to New Jersey musicians Patti Smith, Charlie Puth on new album

2 minute read.

charlie puth tour 2023 wiki

New Jersey is the hot spot for generational music talent.

That's the word from Taylor Swift, who name-checks two Jersey musicians — icon Patti Smith and contemporary hitmaker Charlie Puth — on her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

The album was released Friday, April 19.

“It's very Jersey of her to do this!” said Rob Acampora, deejay for 95.9 FM the Rat in Lake Como and host of “ The A-Game with Rob Acampora ” podcast. “Now I have heard she is a Charlie Puth fan — the name-check is a compliment I would think for him! In her reference to Patti Smith, she says 'I’m no Patti Smith …' I mean who is! This one is where she puts Patti in the same vein as other famous poets and musicians.”

Smith and Puth are is mentioned on the album's title track.

“I laughed in your face and said, 'You’re not Dylan Thomas. I’m not Patti Smith. This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel. We’re modern idiots',” sings Swift on the song.

Smith, the punk rock poet from Deptford, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Her band members have Jersey roots, including Lenny Kaye (North Brunswick), Tony Shanahan (Milltown) and the late Ivan Kral, who owned a record store in New Brunswick.

Their hits include “Because the Night,” “Dancing Barefoot” and “People Have the Power.”

“It's a pretty straightforward, factual reference,” said Caryn Rose, author of “ Why Patti Smith Matters .” “It's interesting that she matches her with Dylan Thomas and not someone else more contemporary to her.”

Thomas is the 20th-century Welsh poet whom Bob Dylan took his name from.

“She's specifically saying 'I'm not her,' which I think is interesting after Courtney's recent comments,” Rose said.

Courtney Love, who is not from New Jersey, shared her thoughts on Swift to the British outlet, The Standard ,

"(Swift) is not important,” Love said, adding she “might be a safe space for girls, and she's probably the Madonna of now, but she's not interesting as an artist."

“I hope that if Swifties would like to learn more about Patti Smith that they pick up my book!” Rose quipped.

Swift also referenced Puth in the same song.

“You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate, declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” Swift sings.

Puth is a native of Rumson whose hits include “We Don't Talk Anymore,” “Marvin Gaye,” “One Call Away,” “Light Switch” and “Left and Right.”

He's had one Swiftian moment on the charts: his collab with Wiz Khalifa on “See You Again” from the “Fast and Furious” series has been viewed more than 6 billion times on YouTube.

No single Swift song has more than a billion views on YouTube.

Swift, 34, has Jersey roots. She and her family summered in Cape May during her childhood, and the young Swift was a regular at the Coffee Talk coffeehouse in Stone Harbor.

“The Tortured Poets Department” was produced by Jersey native Jack Antonoff, who lives in Colts Neck.
