A Ride into History: Ooty to Coonoor on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

No amount of dreamy clouds sitting on your window pane in a turbulence-ridden aircraft can replace the foggy, surreal mountain view with lush-green trees in the Shola forests swaying for your attention. Add to this view, the mesmerizing rhythm of the train’s motion and that outlines your journey from the town of Mettupalayam to the hill station of Ooty, short for Ootacamund, on the Nilgiri Mountain Rail.

The ‘toy’ train snails at a speed of about 60 km per hour carrying passengers on the rack and pinion track to Coonoor and Ooty – covering a distance of 46 kilometers in the form of 108 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. And that’s really the best part.

“I’ve been traveling by the toy train since forever. My first memories are probably those school picnics when the entire class used to occupy the whole train from Coonoor to Ooty. The anticipation of entering a tunnel when the lights get switched on and screaming loudly as you pass through a tunnel is a childhood joy that needs to be experienced as an adult too,” says Anamika, who’s a local resident from Coonoor and takes the train to Mettupalayam regularly even though the train ride takes much longer than a bus or taxi.

From Mettupalayam, the train crosses five stations to reach Coonoor and then stops at Lovedale only to go uphill towards Ooty. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British to replace the steep ascent and descent of the Nilgiris by bullock carts or ponies to Coonoor. If it weren’t for the mountain rail, you would have seen a Shahrukh Khan or a Malaika Arora dancing to the tune of “Chaiya Chaiya” song from Dil Se sitting on a cart . Now that would have been fun to watch.

But the song isn’t the only reason why the mountain rail is immensely popular. This mountain railway is one of the three railway tracks listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India – the other two being The Darjeeling Himalayan Express and The Kalka-Shimla Railway. This year, all the three trains, including the Nilgiri Mountain Railway celebrates the 10th anniversary of their inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British in 1908, and was initially operated by the Madras Railway, and to this date, still relies on its fleet of steam locomotives. It received the heritage status in 2005, just three years before it completed 100 years offering joy rides to millions of passengers.

Whether it’s your debut visit or not, the mountain rail will give you an amazing twin heritage track that steadies on the hillside as the train chugs along the sweeping tea estates, misty mountain tops, bubbling streams and waterfalls to take you back to an era gone by. ”

“You must stop at the quaint Hillgrove station and feed (or be forced to feed) the monkeys that occupy the railway tracks. If you’re lucky enough you might get an elephant in front of your train, stopping your journey for as long as it wishes,” says Anamika.

Please note that the train has limited capacity and reservation is mandatory to get in. Advance reservation starts 120 days prior to journey date per IRCTC – booking can be done on irctc.co.in . We highly recommend booking early as May sees a lot of tourists in Ooty and the train gets full very quickly. Although the train starts from the foothills and the ride ends at Ooty, you might consider taking the ride between Ooty to Coonoor if you are short of time and only want to experience the train ride.

Riding the toy train from Ooty to Coonoor

Good View and an amazing experience. I traveled by first class. Prior booking is needed during season time. If you are going from Coonoor to Ooty then the left side offers you better views than the right side and from Ooty to Coonoor then Right Side offers excellent views. The journey is around 1.5 hours and quite cheap. The train journey is a must experience in Ooty. Plan ahead and book via IRCTC. Some windows don't have locks so be careful of the windows falling on you.

The toy train journey is definitely an enjoyable experience with stunning views.The train is always fully packed with people travel with a lot of luggage. Booking needs to be done at least 2 months in advance. Better to avoid Mettupalayam to Coonoor sector as it has only one service a day.One can prefer train journey either Ooty to Coonoor or Coonoor to Ooty.

It was a pleasant experience to board toy train from Coonoor and go to Ooty. We were standing in a queue and was waiting to get the 1st class ticket. But since it's a limited number hence we get the ticket for normal seating. The main difference between 1st and 2nd class is 1st class has full seats where 8-10 person accommodate whereas in normal class it was a 2 seated chairs. Coimbatore is well connected with rail, bus and air services.

Route Covered by Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The charming train with wooden coaches stops at four stations namely Kallar , Lovingdale , Wellington and Coonoor . The station Fernhill was closed few years back.

Immerse yourself in the magnificence of nature’s bounties as it moves through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and 208 curves. The 46 km distance between Ooty to Mettupalayam is covered in 5 hours while the same distance downhill takes only 3 hours 30 minutes .

Mettupalayam to Coonoor route is more scenic than Coonoor to Ooty. First class is more spacious. Try to get a seat on the right side of the train for excellent views while going through Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty and on the left side of the train while going through Ooty-Coonoor-Mettupalayam.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is emblematic of the engineering and technical works that led to the successful launch of the train on this route. Locomotives are the most vital element of a railway service.

The renowned railway has a youngest X class loco being 50 years old while the oldest is 80 years old. The X class locomotives were manufactured by Swiss Locomotives and Machine Works in Switzerland.

The Southern Railways decided to replace the coal-fired locomotives with diesel locomotives and assigned the task to Golden Rush Workshop of Southern Railway at Tiruchirapalli. The incredible project was proposed in 1854 however the real work started in 1891 and became operational in 1908.

It is the only rack railway in India today and the line uses the Abt rack and pinion system to climb up the steep gradient between Coonoor and Mettupalayam.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway Operations

NMR’s operations are taken care of by the Southern Railways including its maintenance and development. Keeping an aura of legacy, the tickets are still being maintained as cards rather than being computer printed. It runs with its original blue and yellow coaches, sports benches, and open windows without curtains.

There have been several instances where natural hazards have caused damages to the track and the rail services; however Southern Railways have repaired and restored the rail system back in action to provide a unique travel experience to the tourists thronging in every year.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway Advance Ticket Booking

Owing to its huge demand for enjoying the remarkable toy train journey it is recommended that you book your tickets in advance which could be done via the Indian Railway website www.irctc.co.in .

Though the Indian Railways uses computerized ticketing systems; if you want to buy your tickets at the station you would be receiving old aged card tickets.

Please do not forget to book your tickets at least two or three months in advance via IRCTC website. During the peak season, they get booked very fast.

For some reason If you are unable to book the tickets in advance via IRCTC online, the only option left is to reach the Railway Station 1 or 2 hrs in advance, before the booking window opens. Sometimes even after waiting for 2 hrs in Q for general unreserved tickets, you will be disappointed with no tickets left, so advance booking of toy train is always recommended.

Compared to Mettupalayam to Ooty route, Ooty to Coonoor route have more number of departures. Also be aware at the ticket issuance counter, they only allow a maximum of 4 tickets per person . So if you are big in number, better more people stand in the Q for more number tickets.

And I need to know that can we reach top of Ooty by departing 4.00 AM from Coimbatore which ever time is possible, are we allowed at 4.00 am -5.00 am to enter ?

In fact, on the Mettupalayam - Ooty stretch, midnight is when you will find most of the lorries, with their wares, climbing up hill or going downhill to beat the day time traffic.

The Kothagiri leg by night on a car is an eventful drive and chances of encountering wildlife is very high. would not advice if you are not used to driving on Ghat roads combined with Jungle stretches.
