The food and accommodation was good. The problems with the holiday were things that were out of CroisIeurope's control. It was too hot. On a number of days there was smoke from Forest fires.

Charming Portugal Highlights - 10 Days

Second time in Portugal after a Lisbon city break and we were looking for a more complete itinerary that took us through the iconic places of Portugal. With the hopes to not be chunked in any tourist bus. The itinerary was great, and PTC's support with Dany was 24/7 before and during the trip. We've opted for a mix of transfers and car rental and the directions were always precise and spot on to what we were looking for. Couldn't recommend more.

Reviews of douro cruises.

A very pleasant 8 day experience but really more like a five day cruise. The cruise information was incomplete, leaving out interesting opportunities along the way (Port museums and prehistoric rock art,) most particularly an excursion to Salamanca, which turned out to be a highlight for us. The food was good but not as interesting as Portuguese restaurants in Porto or even at home in Canada.
The 8 day cruise on the Duoro from Porto to Salamanca return was one of the most memorable travel experiences for me. Although there were only 7 English speaking guests (in which my partner and 1 were included) amongst mainly French guests , we never felt excluded in any way. The Purser Mike and the Guest coordinator Susannah(? with the lovely long curly hair) went over and beyond our expectations in making us feel welcome and included. All announcements were made in French and English and we never felt that the information relayed was lacking.. It was the same with all the other staff and crew members right down to the deckhands who worked very hard to give us a most enjoyable experience. Nothing was too much for them and they went over and beyond to ensure we got everything we requested . Foodwise it was 5 star cuisine for lunch and dinner each day- mostly French-exquisitely presented with satisfyingly adequate portions and delicious at all times. Complimentary Cocktails and wines were available all day (unlike other cruise companies) . Coffee, tea , refreshments sparkling and still water were also on tap 24/7.The breakfast buffet was more than adequate although it tended to be monotonous . In saying this it still fulfilled its purpose for us. The entertainment on board was also of a high standard esp the Flamenco dancing . There were also other activities like quizes, aline dancing lesson , keepfit session , which appeared to be enjoyed by all who participated. The tours were well organised and we had excellent guides who were professional and informative. I have been on a river cruise with another reputable company in the past but the experience with Croisi Europe far surpassed my expectations. The quality and value for money was outstanding and i will not hesitate to sail with them again.

Welcome to the Douro River

A 2,000-year legacy of winemaking awaits you throughout Portugal's lush Douro River Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site… including the city of Porto, famous as the home of Port wine, carried in barrels along the golden Douro River aboard traditional rabelo boats, sailing past whitewashed quintas surrounded by vineyards…

Ms andorinha on the douro river, ms andorinha – a new riverboat inspired by the destination.

Purpose-built for cruising to historic quintas and villages along the golden Douro River from coastal Porto to the Spanish border, our newly built riverboat, ms Andorinha, offers spacious accommodations for just 84 guests, with 12 300-sq.-ft. suites plus more 225-sq.-ft. cabins, to maximize the onboard experience in every way. Add a small pool atop the Sun Deck, lounge and dining venues, plus built-in amenities designed to delight, and experience the advantages of a riverboat truly inspired by the destination.

The Douro River Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Winemaking traditions in portugal's douro valley.

White-painted quinta estates – sprawling farms surrounded by terraced vineyards – are a particularly popular feature of Portugal's historic Douro River Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its multicultural heritage, the unique grape varieties that grow in its fantastic climate, and a winemaking culture that stretches back centuries. The region entices with museums and historic sites in Porto, its chief port on the Atlantic… ancient monasteries and castles along the river… picture-perfect villages like Pinhão and Pocinho… and lush winemaking estates set within cliff-lined riverscapes.

Portugal's Rabelo boats

Only on the douro… the romance of the rabelo.

With a name that translates to "little tail" (for the long piece of timber extending from its stern that's used to steer it), the traditional wooden Rabelo boat carried passengers and cargo along Portugal's Douro River for centuries. Found nowhere else in the world, this flat-bottomed, shallow-draught sailboat became the fastest and most efficient way to transport casks of prized Port wine between Douro Valley vineyards and the city of Porto at the river's mouth. Although no longer used commercially, these iconic workhorses can still be seen plying the waters of the Douro today.

TAUCKS EVENTS

Inspired by the Destination

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Porto is the port of departure and arrival for our Douro cruises. Which means you’ll have plenty of time to stroll through the splendid old town, take in the view from Portugal’s highest church tower and sample bacalhau , the country’s favourite dried fish. It is said that there are 365 ways to cook it. While you are there, don’t miss the opportunity to go on an excursion to Salamanca in Spain. With its 13th-century university, this impressive city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

River Douro Cruises from Porto in Portugal

Known as the River of Gold, the River Douro (d'Ouro) meets the Atlantic Ocean at Porto . Famous for the port wine trade started by the British, warehouses bearing the names of famous port wine shippers line the river. Terraces of ancient houses climb up Porto's hills, and notable is Eiffel's high level river bridge.

From Porto, our River Douro cruises head into a rural landscape with golden hued vineyards reaching down to the river. An overnight stop at the riverside town of Regua is a base for excursions to Lamego and Vila Real.

Lamego is a market town with an ancient cathedral and a 11th century castle. High above the town is Nossa Schrum, a shrine reached by flights of steps climbed by centuries of pilgrims. Near Vila Real is the beautiful Mateus Palace of the Counts of Vila Real, as depicted on labels of Mateus Rose wine.

The River Douro is noted for its deep locks, some of the deepest in Europe, which lead upward to a scenic stretch of gorges and crags overlooked by terraces of vines. At Pinhao the railway station has decorated tiles showing historic Douro scenes.

The navigable section of the Douro ends at the Spanish border, starting point for a day trip to the World Heritage Site of Salamanca in Spain, noted for golden stone buildings, cobbled streets and the huge Plaza Mayor.

Lamego (Portugal)

Overlooked by two hills, Lamego is an impressive and picturesque town lying in the fertile Upper Douro region. At the top of one hill and reached via sweeping steps is the magnificent baroque Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, and on the other, the remains of a 12th-century castle. The town has a pretty square laid out as a garden, and many fine 17th-century buildings.

Pinhao (Portugal)

Pinhao has a spectacular position at the confluence of the Douro and Pinhao rivers, surrounded by steep, rocky vineyards. It is famed for its old station, wonderfully decorated with blue painted tiles depicting the history of this port-producing region.

Oporto's sea port is located in Leixoes at the mouth of the River Douro and five miles north of the city, whilst river cruise vessels can access Oporto directly. Oporto is the hub of the port wine trade, and vineyards line the shores of the river upstream. Old Oporto is a World Heritage Site with houses dating back to the 15th-century, a grand cathedral, a train station decorated with fine examples of Portugal's blue and white tiles and the remains of Roman city walls.

Regua (Portugal)

Regua is backed by the Serra do Marao mountains and is at the heart of the Port wine region. It is a pretty town to stroll and is home to the Solar de Vinho do Porto which offers tastings and port-related exhibitions.

Salamanca (Spain)

The old city of Salamanca is a World Heritage Site with many Renaissance buildings of golden sandstone. The central square of Plaza Mayor is bordered by graceful arcades, and other highlights include the Romanesque Cathedral, the Augustinian Monastery and the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum of Casa Lis. Salamanca is reached by a day long optional excursion .

Will be leaving on a river cruise 9/5 - 9/16/14 from STP to Moscow on MS Zosima Shaskov, totally unfamiliar with boat and area, any info will help. I've been warned about what to do and not to do as far as food and water, which has already frightened me. We are a group of 12.

Dear egocentric, welcome to Cruise Critic! You would get more responses if you had put the voyage in the header.

I believe the ship is similar to the Lev Tolstoy, which we cruised on last September. There is nothing to worry about if you keep common sense.

Please read our trip story on our website http://www.stevekathytravels.com. Our e-mail addresses are also on the website.

Also, if you go to this website, http://riverfleet.com/cruises/view?id=38, it gives a day by day breakdown of your cruise.

I hope you have gotten your Russian Visas by now. You can get rubles from any ATM in Moscow or STP. The exchange rate is about 36 to 1.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Go and enjoy your trip, relax.:)

You were very kind to post all those links to the OP.

His first post to CC and only two weeks before a big trip to a foreign land, he was lucky to have your valuable info and insight.

Lets hope some of the others in his group of 12 have done some homework! Travelling to Russia definitely needs some prior planning!

You could try the appropriate Roll Call board, but with only 150 passengers (approx) on river boats, it's unlikely that you will get many, or any responses from people cruising on the same date.

We did a similar cruise with another company six years ago. Russia is a magnificent destination and the river was fascinating.

Unfortunately the cruise boat excursions are in large groups and offer frustratingly brief glimpses of Moscow and St Petersburg. Best thing we did was to stay extra days in the centre of both cities to explore independently at our own pace.

Beware of pickpockets, they are excellent at what they do! Keep wallets etc. in inside, zippered pockets.

Thank you so much for your help, I am completely new to this. I don't even know how to post properly on this site. I do appreciate the information.

I am not a HE, and the name used was because it was the only name I could come up with as so many names were turned down. I really don't have an attitude I just came across this website by accident trying to get some information. But I would like to thank you for responding. Have a nice evening.
You might want to start over with a new name. Cruise Critic is a wonderful resource for all cruises, but as in a Greek tragedy our greatest strength is also our fatal flaw: the most prolific posters tend to have definite likes and dislikes based on their lengthy cruise history (often with one favorite cruise line). If your CC name seems to dis- them, your posts often will not get a fair hearing. Just human nature. ;)

Hi egocentric

you might want to post on the River Cruise Roll Call page, here is the link to it, if you use your cruise company, cruise title and travel date you might find other passengers and get more info relative to you.

I hope you have a great trip, we've done a couple of river cruises and I'd love to go on one cruise in Russia...its on the bucket list! :-)

We have gained so much useful information from so many very helpful people here on CC, I hope you do too.

I´ve just returned from Russia a week ago. I´ve been on the Ivan Bunin which is a sister ship to the Zosima Shashkov. The Ivan Bunin has been renovated in 2011 and the combined 2 cabins to one (not all of them but quite a few). The regular (old) cabins are really tiny (not to mention the bathroom). We were able to see a few cabins. You can see some cabin photos here . 326 is one of the "doubled" cabins (and we´ve been in that one) which has a larger bathroom.

The itinerary is really spectecular and I took more than 2,100 photo :D. So make sure you have enough data storage with you! But we also had gorgeous weather with upper 80ies and bright sunshine (a real heat wave for August). My review with lots of photos will be online soon but it´s in German. We did the St. Petersburg - Moskow itinerary.

Although the Russian are not allowed to accept foreign currency you were able to pay in Euro (and Dollar in some place) in most of the touristy spots (especially souvenir booths).

Food was simple but good. We had bottled water for all excursions. There are supermarkets up the street in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Not too far to walk. Water is pretty cheap.

Dear Jazzbeau,

The lady is a first time poster and had difficulty getting a screen name that was acceptable.

Please post instructions on how she can change her screen name to one that will not raise any hackles.

I hope your cruise is an exciting rewarding experience.

Thank you so much, hoyaheel.

I spoke to the lady today and she was successful in changing her screen name.

Found that OP had started another thread in another forum. Now that name is changed and threads are merged, let's help her out!

PS - thanks to Talisker92 for posting info on how to change names. I didn't have time to look this up before the problem was solved!

I spent a half hour on the phone with the nice lady and allayed a lot of her fears. We discussed currency, size of cabins, food and water, time differences, weather etc. Also suggested the not to miss sites.

I was glad I was able to help her.

My review is online now but it´s in German - anyway there are a lot of photos to look at so you can see what to expect.

We did change 150 Euros (actually we used the ATM at St. Petersburg airport). Most of the money went into the tips and a coffee break at Moscow airport. We are no big shoppers. We bought some magnets and some pieces of lace (as my Mom is a lace maker). There´s a lot of nice stuff to buy but nothing I really need. You can still change money onboard or pay with Dollars / Euro and receive Rubel as change.

Beautiful River Cruises That Will Take Your Breath Away

Posted: January 2, 2024 | Last updated: January 2, 2024

Whether you’re considering a river cruise for the first time or you’ve been navigating the world’s rivers for years, we’ve got 28 fabulous reasons to book a river cruise – from a leisurely float down the marvelous Mekong, to a cruise along the Hudson River.

River adventures

Finding alone time is increasingly easy on river cruise ships, many of which are going all out to cater to solo travelers.
River cruises are often seen as the preserve of couples, but change is afoot. In 2022, A-ROSA River Cruises launched A-ROSA SENA, the only river cruise ship in Europe to have a dedicated kids’ club room.
If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises, which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Most ocean-going cruise lines launch one or two ships a year. River cruise ships, however, take to the water much more regularly. Viking River Cruises doesn’t just lay claim to the biggest fleet (80 river cruising ships), but also the Guinness World Record for inaugurating the most new ships in a single day (14, if you were wondering).

Europe’s rivers are lined with ancient cities and landmarks, but several cruise lines are delving deeper in Europe’s history by tackling a more diverse range of subjects. AmaWaterways is a great example – in 2023 its Color of Provence cruise will include a three-night visit to Paris which will focus on the city’s Black heritage, while another AmaWaterways cruise along the Rhône river will include a Black heritage tour of Marseille.

More river cruise lines are heading to remote rivers. One example is Seabourn. In 2023 the line will launch a 14-day Wild Guianas To The Amazon Basin cruise, which sails along Brazil’s Guajará River, a tributary of the Amazon.
River cruise ships make excellent use of space, and we’re increasingly seeing this applied to windows. If you don’t manage to bag a balcony suite, don’t panic – it’s highly likely that you’ll have floor to ceiling windows.
River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

Keen to sail along Europe’s most famous rivers but not so keen on crowds? Choose a river cruise that goes well beyond the cities on the itinerary, and you’ll be richly rewarded. For example, opt for one of the cruises that travels past Budapest to the Black Sea’s spectacular marshy delta, or along the more remote stretches of Germany’s often-overlooked Main River.

Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots

Unlike on ocean-going cruises, you won’t need binoculars to appreciate the scenery. Sign up for an American river cruise and you can sail through vast bayous, past skyscraper-filled cities and along ocean-wide stretches of the Mississippi during a single sailing, while in Europe, Germany’s UNESCO-listed castles can be easily combined with Prague’s bohemian masterpieces.

The landscape is fabulously diverse

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

To start with, there are no ocean waves and currents to rock the boat. Additionally, fewer decks means less chance of feeling any movement – you’ll be closer to the hull of the ship (the part which moves least) and river cruising ships’ low-slung design means there’s minimal sway anyway. In summary? You can spend your time planning your excursions and activities rather than poring over ship plans in order to bag a cabin in the most stable spot.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

Amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

The Nile is 4,132 miles (6,650km) long. To put that into perspective, if you drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End (the entire length of Britain) you’d cover just 840 miles (1,352km). We recommend Viking’s Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise, which starts and finishes in Cairo and takes in Luxor’s Karnak Temple complex, the Necropolis of Thebes and the beautiful Philae temple complex (pictured), which is surrounded by water.

You can cruise the world’s longest river

There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several Uniworld vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here.

One example is Amadeus River Cruises. In May 2023 the line will launch Amadeus Riva, which will have a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.

One example is Amadeus River Cruises . In May 2023 the line launched Amadeus Riva, which has a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.

We’re seeing more river cruise lines offer a complimentary night in a hotel prior to setting sail, along with further opportunities to explore the embarkation and disembarkation destinations. Expect more river cruise companies to offer add-ons such as three-day city packages of Amsterdam (pictured) prior to sailings along the Rhine, or wine-themed mini-breaks prior to Loire sailings.

The added extras are getting better

We’re increasingly keen to avoid crowds, and river cruises have cottoned on to this. They’re going all out to offer cruises year-round – not just during the summer (traditionally the busiest time for river cruises), but in April and May and September and October, when there will be fewer selfie sticks and thinner crowds to contend with. Pictured is Bratislava Castle rising above the Danube River in fall.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) – this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.

Now check out the world's oldest man-made structures still in use today

Hello. I was wondering if anyone that has taken a river cruise know if liquids are allowed on board? I'm referring to bottle water, wine, etc. It seems that limited amounts are provided with meals however one needs to purchase additional.

PeterC and Brun066, may I ask what type of liquids you brought onboard your ships? Thanks :-)

@aquablue: shampoo, shower cream (quite large flasks).

There was no issue with bringing liquids on our Gate 1 river cruise, but there were two bottles provided in the cabin every day of water and there were water coolers on board where you could refill bottles as necessary as well as tea and coffee available most of the time. Alcohol was served with meals and there was an excellent bar in the lounge. It really wasn't necessary. Although if we were heavy drinkers, we might have brought a couple of bottles of booze on board with us.
