Choosing the Right Portable Fish House

Ice fisherman have a huge variety of portable fish houses to choose from — they vary widely in size, configuration, and convenience and comfort features. Wired2Fish’s Kyle Peterson gives us a video walk-through of his Clam Voyager X Thermal Stealth portable ice shelter, and what features influenced his purchase decision.

The Voyager X is a versatile size for comfortably fishing two anglers but not so big that it limits remote access adventures (rigid hitch & hand-pull construction). Features like insulated walls, built-in LED lighting, padded and adjustable position seating and durable hyfax runners on the bottom make it comfortable and durable. A key element for Kyle was the black fabric. It blocks out daylight extremely well making it well-suited for sight fishing in the shallows, dark house spearing (where legal), and heat retention on sunny days.

Clam Outdoors began as a manufacturer of quality ice fishing equipment over 30 years ago. In the beginning, it started with a portable suitcase-style shelter that opened up like a Clam (hence where the company name came from), but it all took off when an avid ice angler name Dave Genz came up with a brand new concept. He wanted to build a portable ice fishing house that would protect him from the weather, as well as allow him to be mobile. So he made one. Then another, and another and began to sell them to anglers across the ice belt. When he realized he had something that everyone wanted, he joined forces with Clam that was able to help with the expanding demand for the original Fish Trap.

Biggest One-Person Ice Shelter

My favorite shelters are the one-person shelters. Smaller and lighter , they are easier to pull behind when walking and fishing alone. Plus, you can add accessories to personalize them to your needs.

An advantage to using a lighter one-person ice shelter is the ability to place all of your gear inside the tub and easily pull it behind you.

I currently fish out of the Clam Legend XL Thermal shelter , one of the largest one-person ice shelters available in the market today, with 16 square feet of fishable area .

My Clam Legend XL Ice team Edition is on the left in the photo above. Next to my Kenai Pro Stealth and my favorite pop-up hub style shelter, the Jason Mitchell 5000 Thermal that I’ve had for years!

I’ve added accessories to hold my ice rods, light the interior, and hang up my heavy coats when I have the Mr. Heater Buddy Jr going.

Ice fishing out of the insulated Legend XL shelter is an easy fit. Not overly heavy and the Legend XL will carry the ice fishing gear I need for the day.

I am not a fan of a hub-style shelter for ice fishing by myself unless I am driving onto the ice . If walking, you’ll have to carry the shelter , and it gets tiring!

Being a bigger guy at 6’1″, I would opt for the Clam C-360 Thermal shelter. A solid 72″ x 72″ and 36 square feet, this shelter weighs in at 36lbs, especially if I had transportation onto the ice!

I would most likely recommend the Eskimo QUickFish 2i shelter for most of you walking. It is reasonably priced, insulated, and weighs in at 28.5lbs .

Final Thoughts

You’ll have to choose the type and size of shelter that will fit your basic ice fishing needs the best. Compare whether you want an insulated or non-insulated ice fishing tent .

When I’m walking, I’ll pull a one-man flip-over behind me with my gear for the day tucked inside of it. If I’m on my ATV or snowmobile, I may tow it behind with my gear inside of it.

The Jason Mitchell 5000 Thermal only comes out when I take friends or kids for the first few times to introduce them to the sport and want to keep them out of the weather.

For the most part, when I’m on the ice, I wear an ice suit, the Clam Outdoors Ice Armor Extreme, and use my one-man flip to haul my gear! Seriously, a good ice suit is like wearing an ice shelter on your body.

But you need to decide what’s best for yourself , and with the information above, you should be well on your way!

Skyway trail description.

If you are looking for a picturesque stroll or a tranquil ride through nature close to an urban setting, then consider St. Petersburg’s Skyway Trail. The trail showcases the best of Clam Bayou’s pristine natural environment. Beginning at the popular  Pinellas Trail  on 7th Terrace South, the paved trail skirts Child’s Lake and then cuts through Child’s Park Recreation Center. From there it follows the course of a stream as it winds south, past Thurgood Marshall Middle School and Twin Brooks Golf Course and into what is arguably the highlight of the route: the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve. This estuarine environment has been restored after years of destructive urban development. The trail is elevated, providing a good vantage point from which to take in the diverse native habitats of the park, including marsh and mangrove forest. The park is a birder’s paradise, with a wealth of wading birds including the roseate spoonbill, ibis, egret, blue heron, pelicans and many more. Visitors will also be delighted by occasional glimpses of manatee and dolphin. Clam Bayou is popular with kayakers too, for obvious reasons.  

Continuing south, the trail begins to parallel 37th Street. At the corner of US 19 and the Pinellas Bayway, it meets the  Bayway Trail,  which heads west towards Fort de Soto. Past that, it continues south for a little, crosses underneath I-275/ US-19 to the marina on 58th Avenue.  

Remember to pack sunscreen as there is not much shade to be found on the trail. 

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is free at the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve (4099 34th Ave S, St. Petersburg). You can also find restrooms and water fountains at this location.

At 22nd Avenue south, across the stream from the Thurgood Marshall Middle School, you can find parking at Queen Dennis Park (4129 22nd Ave S, St. Petersburg).

Finally, near the northern end of the Skyway Trail you can park at the Childs Park Recreation Center (4419 13th Avenue S).

Near my FL home. Easy to ride and enjoy multiple environments from parks to nature preserves. Perfect on-ramp for the Pinellas Trail.

Great Vistas

If you start at the southern end near the I-275 rest stop, you can combine this with the Pinellas Trail for a 20+ mile out-back ride to downtown St. Petersburg. Beautiful vistas of bay, Skyway Bridge and downtown St. Petersburg. City needs to improve the signage at key intersections, especially at the intersection of Skyway and Bayway trails.
