Roger Hodgson: “Rick Davies came into the studio one day with a sketch of a guy in a deck chair under an umbrella with all this chaos going on around him. He was inspired by Yves Robert's film ‘Alexandre Le Bienheureux’. People thought the title came from the UK being in crisis during the 3-day working week in 1974-75 under the Conservative Government. So this guy is sunning himself in an industrial cityscape as if he has no problems, while the rest of the country is in bad shape.”

Rare flyer for an early Pogues gig in Birmingham ( reverse has dates for obscure, massive mullet-sporting band The Burning). The Pogues had released their glorious debut album 'Red Roses For Me' -a true shot in the arm at a time when the old mainstream was taking back control - in October. The band's gigs at this time were a riotous delight.

Original concert flyer, 8½"x 15" and political campaign sheet.

Promoting the 'Sandinista' album, the Bonds Casino dates in New York City were the Clash's only U.S. concerts that year, and huge demand (with fans sleeping out in Times Square to obtain tickets) resulted in the original 8 nights being extended to 17. As before, the band made heroic efforts to promote some of their favourite artists as support acts on different nights, including Lee 'Scratch' Perry, The Fall, The Slits, the Dead Kennedys, the Sugarhill Gang, Bad Brains, and Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five. Sold with a related political flyer that was likely handed out at the concerts.

Penny Smith had spotted Paul Simonon's growing frustration with the Palladium's audience that night and her attention enabled to her - whilst backing away! - to shoot the exact moment when the bass guitar came smashing down, capturing one of rock history's best images. All original UK posters on the album are scarce and highly sought after.

The very first run of this poster to promote the event was stolen lock stock and barrel and sent to the U.S. for sale, leaving printer Peter Ledeboer and Martin Sharp to put togther an emergency run on higher quality metal foil. This in turn became the very first Big O poster - BO1. Martin Sharp in an interview stated that the figures were sourced from a pre-photographic era edition of National Geographic. Excellent condition.

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK - O.M.D., 1981

This U.S. compilation brought together tracks from the band's first two albums from the year before. It's easily confused with the 1981 UK re-release of the first album, both having near identical artwork. Note the punctuated spelling of OMD. Though most famously associated with Factory Records, with no regular income from the label Peter Saville had moved to London in 1979 to become art director at Virgin Record's semi-independent label Dindisc that had signed OMD from Factory. Saville had designed the sleeve for their Factory single 'Electricity' and Dindisc founder Carol Wilson was keen to continue the connection. Early OMD material is very hard to find.

SEX PISTOLS - PRETTY VACANT, 1977

Who came up with the original 'Nowhere' and 'Boredom' buses? Jamie Reid says it was he in 1972; Berkeley, CA, Situationist group Point-Blank! say it was they in 1973. Either way, this crisply printed in-store banner is uncommon and one of Reid's best designs for the band.

Hard-to-find original poster for The Stones' two shows at Cologne's Sportshalle on 4th September 1973. The band were at a live performing peak: official photographer at the time Michael Putland remembered "They were always incredible, but there was something about the band's energy on this tour.."

John Pasche has said that after the 1930's inspirations behind his previous Stones tour posters, he was looking to do something with a Rene Magritte influence in a photographic style. The tour began immediately after the release of 'Goat's Head Soup'.

Martin Sharp: "I adored the song 'Mister Tambourine Man'. In London I had a wonderful printer, Peter Ledeboer, who was printing OZ. He loved the idea of doing posters; he was a great publisher for me. And I really loved the effects of foil, so we printed on foil stock." (in 'Electrical Banana: Masters of Psychedelic Art', Norman Hathaway and Dan Nadel.)

The artist gave credit to his Finnish girlfriend, with whom he lived at the Pheasantry in Chelsea: "I can remember my dear friend Eija Vehka Aho creating all the beautiful circles that make up Bob Dylan’s hair and which contribute so much to the work." (in 'Australian art in the National Gallery of Australia', Anne Gray.) Vehka Aho recalled creating the circles with a pair of compasses.

Martin Sharp adapted the image of Dylan from a 1965 Daniel Kramer photograph of Dylan on stage prior to his August 28 performance at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, New York.

The last of Corriston's four-in-a-row sleeves (three with Kretzschmar) for the band in the dynamic period kicked off by the recording of 'Some Girls'. This is a harder to find poster for the album.

George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley reunited in spirited fashion for the International Aids Day Benefit Concert in support of The Terrence Higgins Trust the year after Wham! broke up, performing 'Everything She Wants'. This shot shows the moment - clearly visible on the video of the event - when George called Andrew on stage.

THE ROLLING STONES - IT'S ONLY ROCK'N ROLL, 1974

The album cover painting was created by Belgian artist Guy Peellaert but the actual promotional material artwork – featuring a much more striking image interpreting the lyrics “If I could stick my pen in my heart and spill it all over the stage” - was created by British Pop Artist Philip Castle in a style that could sync with Peellaert’s artwork. Amongst many other commissions, Philip Castle created the famous poster artwork for 'A Clockwork Orange' and 'Full Metal Jacket' for Stanley Kubrick. He also created the ‘teardrop’ on David Bowie’s shoulder on Brian Duffy’s album cover photograph for ‘Diamond Dogs’.

This poster is hard to come by.

THE ROLLING STONES - STONE AGE, 1971

Rare original 1971 sleeve proof, on the London label for release in Japan. Although later compilations outside of the band's control were of low quality, 'Stone Age' put together an interesting selection of more obscure or not previously released sides from the band's 64-66 archive.

The superb original U.S. poster, a Warhol-inspired take on the famous LP cover. Pennie Smith's shot of Paul Simonon smashing his bass was captured at New York City's Palladium (Smith needed persuading that the shot was acceptable). Ray Lowry's lettering invoked Elvis's debut LP. The ambitious double album threw down the gauntlet to the heavyweights of the past, Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones.

PINK FLOYD - DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, 1973

Original in-store promo poster, illustrating the band's previous lp releases. The origin of probably the most famous album sleeve of all time stems from the band's desire to avoid another photographic image in favour of a simpler graphic. Hipgnosis's Aubrey Powell found inspiration in a prism image in a 1950's French book of early colour photography. This is the only original 1973 poster design for the album we've yet encountered.

SEX PISTOLS - FUCK FOREVER, 1986

The very scarce Fuck Forever poster was first printed for an exhibition of Jamie's work in 1986 at Hamiltons Gallery, 13 Carlos Place, London W1. On the back is artwork and text in black & white by Jon Savage & Jon Wozencroft, with illustrations of Jamie's work and his influences. The original artwork was made in 1978 as a prop for 'The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle' film.

Jean-Paul Goude: Would you agree that you have always had a problem with authority? Grace Jones: Yes, definitely.... And I think that is what contributed to my masculinization. I deliberately challenged men's roles. In fact, I survived by taking on both roles.

Probably the single most famous image of Grace Jones, Jean Paul Goude's 1981 'Blue-black in black on brown' created as oil paint on cut up photo. Jean Paul Goude: "Grace was very open. We worked together to create this intimidating character. I mean, she's naturally intimidating anyway...I tried to emphasize that body shape through a sort of minimalist German expressionism, with its games of shadows and its angular shapes."

Jean Paul Goude's amazing image was a brilliant illusion. The convincing yet impossible pose was created in 1978 by photographing Grace in a variety of poses, some supported by clear acrylic boxes, and then reassembling the cut-up Ektachrome transparencies: see original here.

GRACE JONES - SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM, 1985

Initially an NY disco diva, with designer and partner Jean-Paul Goude Grace Jones created a radical androgynous new image and musical metamorphosis, one of the most memorable of the era. Goude can be seen creating the bold cut-up image at the beginning of the video for the single. Goude had employed a similar approach for the sleeve for Cristina's 1984 album ‘Sleep It Off’. See the original cut-up .

GRACE JONES - ONE MAN SHOW, 1981

One Man Show was the name both of Grace Jones' performances at London's Drury Lane Theatre and New York's Savoy Theater in 1981 and of the video released the following year. This poster was created in formats for both.

John Pasche not only designed the band's classic tour posters of the early 70's, but also created the 'lips' logo in 1971 for the Stones' own label. His work is among the very best of the era. Beware: Repros are very common on this poster.

The band's second UK no.1 album in succession, from which three classic singles 'Dreaming', 'Union City Blue' and 'Atomic' were drawn. The cover shot - well printed on this poster - was by master photographer Norman Seeff, whose prolific credits include The Rolling Stone's for 'Exile On Main Street'.

SEX PISTOLS - ANARCHY IN THE UK, 1976

Original poster for The Pistols' incendiary debut single. EMI withdrew the single after the Bill Grundy 'Today' show debacle, contributing to the poster's rarity.

Peter Anderson moved from Scotland to London in 1980 and soon secured regular work for the NME, where he met Paul Weller to shoot the paper's Avengers pastiche 1982 Christmas cover. Both valued a degree of sponteneity and humour, and Weller commissioned Anderson for a photo shoot in February in France - a chilly Boulogne convincingly passing for springtime Paris.

Shot for i-D magazine when the band were still unsigned. The Gallaghers already commanded the camera with a studied attitude. Liam was curt; Noel offered to carry his bags.

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Exploding out of the ‘60s rock scene, The Rolling Stones personified the sexy and rebellious side of the British Invasion. The boisterous group built their rip-roaring sound around the swinging, syncopated rhythms of American blues. Later, they became well known for the bad-boy antics of swaggering frontman Mick Jagger and hard-partying lead guitarist Keith Richards as for their stream of infectious hits.

Finished off with Charlie Watts and Ron Wood , The Stones would remain prolific for decades, releasing albums into the ‘00.

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
