Women's Tour de Pologne will make its comeback to race calendar in 2024

Won last Friday by the Slovenian Matej Mohoric, the Tour de Pologne will have a female version from next season.

It was John Lelangue, general manager of the Lang Team, the organization that runs the Polish stage race, who communicated this news to WielerFlits. "It will not take place at the same time as the male Tour de Pologne, it is very difficult in terms of television and roads, but it will certainly be during the summer," said the 52-year-old Belgian.

Organized from 2000 to 2008, the Women's Tour de Pologne reappeared on the calendar in 2016, but this return was very short-lived since the race had since disappeared. The Italian Tatiana Guderzo, the Dutch Kirsten Wild or the Swiss Jolanda Neff have entered their names on the winners of this event which will therefore be revived in 2024.

Tour de France won’t finish in Paris for first time in more than a century because of the Olympics

PARIS (AP) — The final stage of next year’s Tour de France will be held outside Paris for the first time since 1905 because of a clash with the Olympics, moving instead to the French Riviera.

Because of security and logistical reasons, the French capital won’t have its traditional Tour finish on the Champs-Elysees. The race will instead conclude in Nice on July 21. Just five days later, Paris will open the Olympics.

The race will start in Italy for the first time with a stage that includes more than 3,600 meters of climbing. High mountains will be on the 2024 schedule as soon as the fourth day in a race that features two individual time trials and four summit finishes.

There are a total of seven mountain stages on the program, across four mountain ranges, according to the route released Wednesday.

The race will kick off in the Italian city of Florence on June 29 and will take riders to Rimini through a series of hills and climbs in the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. That tricky start could set the scene for the first skirmishes between the main contenders.

Riders will first cross the Alps during Stage 4, when they will tackle the 2,642-meter Col du Galibier.

“The Tour peloton has never climbed so high, so early,” Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said.

And it will just be just a taste of what’s to come since the total vertical gain of the 111th edition of the Tour reaches 52,230 meters.

The next big moment for two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and his rivals will be Stage 7 for the first time trial in the Bourgogne vineyards. The first rest day will then come after a stage in Champagne presenting several sectors on white gravel roads for a total of 32 kilometers that usually provide for spectacular racing in the dust.

Tour riders will then head south to the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, then return to the Alps for a pair of massive stages with hilltop finishes, at the Isola 2000 ski resort then the Col de la Couillole, a 15.7-kilometer (9.7-mile) ascent at an average gradient of 7.1%.

There should be suspense right until the very end because the last stage, traditionally a victory parade in Paris for the race leader until the final sprint takes shape, will be a 34-kilometer (21.1-mile) time trial between Monaco and Nice.

“Everyone remembers the last occasion the Tour finished with a time trial, when Greg LeMond stripped the yellow jersey from the shoulders of Laurent Fignon on the Champs-Elysees in 1989, by just eight seconds,” Prudhommne said. “Thirty-five years later, we can but dream of a similar duel.”

There are eight flat stages for the sprinters, leaving plenty of opportunities for Mark Cavendish to try to become the outright record-holder for most career stage wins at the sport’s biggest race.

The route for the third edition of the women’s Tour will take the peloton from the Dutch city of Rotterdam, starting Aug. 12, to the Alpe d’Huez resort. The race will feature eight stages and a total of 946 kilometers.

L'équipe de France rejoindra le 12 juin son camp de base pour l'Euro 2024, dans lequel elle fera son entrée en lice le 17 juin, soit cinq jours plus tard. C'est l'hôtel quatre étoiles Premier Park Hotel & Spa Best Western, à Bad Lippspringe, qui a été retenu pour accueillir les Bleus durant la compétition. Leur futur terrain d'entraînement est, lui, situé à une quinzaine de minutes par la route.

Un petit cocon dans lequel les Bleus vont s'épanouir. Durant leur séjour en Allemagne, en marge de l'Euro 202 4, qui se jouera du 14 juin au 14 juillet, les hommes de Didier Deschamps séjourneront à Bad Lippspringe, une petite bourgade de 17.000 âmes, réputée pour ses sources thermales. Un camp de base repéré en amont par Philippe Brocherieux, le responsable administratif de l'équipe de France, et Mohamed Sanhadji, l'officier de liaison tricolore, que le sélectionneur et son staff ont visité fin janvier .

Si elle se situe à près de 350 kilomètres de Leipzig, où les vice-champions du monde doivent disputer leur deuxième match de poule, cette ville possède l'avantage d'être à moins de 200 kilomètres de Dortmund et Düsseldorf, où se disputeront les deux autres rencontres du premier tour. 

De l'espace plutôt que du luxe

Bien que doté de quatre étoiles, l'hôtel choisi, le Premier Park Hotel & Spa, est loin du luxe pour lequel la sélection opte parfois. Mais avec sa centaine de chambres et son spa, il conviendra parfaitement aux besoins de la bande de Kylian Mbappé . D'autant qu'il sera entièrement privatisé et à la disposition des Bleus pendant l'ensemble du tournoi. 

"Sans être luxueux, cet établissement est confortable et offre l'espace nécessaire à une vie en commun harmonieuse" , avait commenté "DD". "C'est conforme à ce que j'ai pu voir sur les photos. Mais c'est toujours mieux d'être sur place pour se rendre compte des espaces, de l'aspect fonctionnel" , s'était-il félicité, évoquant des locaux "confortables".  

Un quart d'heure pour aller s'entraîner

Les Bleus disposeront aussi d'un terrain d'entraînement, situé à seulement "un petit quart d'heure" de leur lieu de villégiature, un véritable "avantage", selon Didier Deschamps. Il s'agit de la Home Deluxe Arena, le stade habituel du SC Paderborn 07, un club de D2 allemande. "Nous aurons donc de très bonnes conditions d'entraînement. Les espaces intérieurs sont parfaitement adaptés à nos besoins" , avait expliqué le patron des champions du monde 2018. Avec là, quelques retouches à la marge, et notamment l'ajout d'une salle d'échauffement et d'un centre médical. 

Par ailleurs, la FFF a reçu la garantie que la pelouse, qui a souffert durant l'hiver, serait changée dès le lendemain de la dernière journée de Bundesliga 2, le week-end du 18-19 mai. "La pelouse n'est pas en parfait état, actuellement. C'est normal, au regard des conditions climatiques. L'UEFA a établi un cahier des charges pour l’ensemble des terrains d'entraînement des équipes. Il n'y a pas de raison d'être inquiet" , avait assuré le sélectionneur tricolore. Des visites de contrôle régulières ont été programmées par l'encadrement jusqu'à l'arrivée de l'équipe de France, prévue le 12 juin.

Pour rappel, les Bleus, vice-champions d'Europe 2016, auront affaire avec l'Autriche (le 17 juin à 21h, à Düsseldorf), les Pays-Bas (le 21 juin à 21h, à Leipzig) et la Pologne (le 25 juin à 18h, à Dortmund) durant la phase de poules.

Equipe de France: les deux adversaires des Bleus pour préparer l’Euro 2024 sont connus

Les Bleus sont désormais fixés. Dans le but de préparer l’ Euro 2024 en Allemagne (14 juin-14 juillet), l’équipe de France disputera deux matchs amicaux contre le Luxembourg (87e au classement Fifa) et le Canada (49e au classement Fifa) début juin.

Les hommes de Didier Deschamps recevront d’abord les Luxembourgeois à Metz, au stade Saint-Symphorien, le 5 juin (21h). Quatre jours plus tard, ils accueilleront les Canadiens au stade Matmut Atlantique de Bordeaux (21h15). Le coup d’envoi de cette deuxième rencontre a été décalé de 15 minutes en raison des élections européennes.

Tour de Pologne 2023: the route of the 80th edition revealed

The 80th edition of the UCI WorldTour Tour de Pologne was presented live on TVP Sport today, unveiling a brand new route full of great new features.

This year the Tour de Pologne celebrates three anniversaries: 95 years since its foundation, the 80th edition of the race and 30 years of the Lang Team. To mark the occasion, the organizers have designed an unprecedented route running through the west of Poland. The now traditional seven stages will be as follows: one time trial stage, two mountain stages, two stages for sprinters and two hilly stages where both classic riders and riders aiming for the general classification will be able to compete.

All the ingredients for a great spectacle that will set Poland’s roads ablaze from 29th July to 4th August.

Czesław Lang, Race Director and CEO of the Lang Team, says: “There will certainly be a lot of sporting emotions. We have prepared a beautiful, challenging route, which is completely different from last year’s, as we are moving the race from the east to the west of Poland. We will start in Poznań on 29th July and then there are the following stages: Leszno – Karpacz, Wałbrzych – Duszniki Zdrój, Strzelin – Opole, Pszczyna – Bielsko-Biała, an ITT in Katowice, Zabrze – Kraków. I know this route very well, we have been planning it carefully all year and I am convinced that it will be an arena of fantastic rivalry between riders from the best teams in the world. It is also a great opportunity to celebrate our 3 anniversaries. 95 years ago, riders started for the first time in the “Race Around Poland”, which was the first name of the Tour de Pologne. In 2023 we will start the 80th edition of the race, which has become the showcase of our country in the world! ”

Stage 1 POZNAŃ – POZNAŃ – 183.7 km

The jubilee edition of the Tour de Pologne will kick off in Poznań, where the race returns after 16 years. The start is set at St Mark’s Square, in the Poznañ International Fair headquarters. After covering more than 180 kilometres in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, the riders will finish the stage at the Automobil Klub in Poznañ, where they will race in a 4-kilometre lap. There will be six primes along the route for the points classification, the climbers’ classification and the most active rider ranking. Three LOTTO Intermediate Sprints will take place in Suchy Las, Murowana Goślina and Kostrzyn. In Suchy Las the riders will also compete for the only GPM PZU KOM (3rd cat.) of the stage. Two special sprints will be held: Special Sprint SOUDAL – 95 Years of the Tour de Pologne in Pobiedziska and the Special Sprint in Środa Wielkopolska, Środa District

Stage 2 LESZNO – KARPACZ – 202.9 km

The second stage is the only one with a distance of over 200 kilometers. The start is in Leszno in the Wielkopolskie Voivodship, which the riders will leave after a few kilometers into the race to fight for the only LOTTO Intermediate Sprint of this stage, set in Góra in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. After a relatively flat first half of the stage, a demanding climb will kick up, with two 2nd cat PZU KOMs at Przełęcz pod Średnicą and Sosnówka. The grand finale of the stage will take place in Karpacz and the winner will be the rider who first reaches the top of the final 11-kilometre Orlinek climb, known as the ‘Wailing Wall’. There are also two other special sprints along the route: the Special Sprint SOUDAL – 95 Years of the Tour de Pologne in Świerzawa and the Lake Hill Special Sprint.

Stage 3 WAŁBRZYCH – DUSZNIKI-ZDRÓJ, COS – 163.3 km

The third stage starts in Wałbrzych, the second largest town in Lower Silesia. It is a typical mountain stage with a total elevation gain of more than 3,000 metres and a distance of 163 kilometres, finishing in Duszniki-Zdrój. The stage will feature three 2nd category PZU KOMs in Walim, on the Jugowska Pass and in Zieleniec, as well as the Special Sprint SOUDAL – 95 Years of the Tour de Pologne – in Pieszyce. The spectacular finish will take place in the Biathlon Arena of the Central Sports Centre.

Stage 4 STRZELIN – OPOLE – 198.6 km

This 198 km stage will see the peloton return to slightly flatter terrain, giving the sprinters a chance to test themselves. The riders will start from the Lower Silesian town of Strzelin and head west to Sobótka before turning back to Opole, the capital of this voivodeship. The Tour de Pologne last visited Opole in 2020, when the second stage started here. The stage features one cat. 3rd cat. PZU KOM in Strzegomiany and three LOTTO Intermediate Sprints in Sobótka, Strzelin and Grodków.

Stage 5 PSZCZYNA – BIELSKO-BIAŁA – 198.8 km

The stage – almost 199 kilometres long – is a typical mountain stage, with an elevation gain of over 3,000 metres. The riders will start in Pszczyna and finish in Bielsko-Biała, which has hosted the Tour de Pologne in the past. Before the finish, however, the riders will have to tackle several tough climbs: a 2nd-category PZU KOM at Zameczek (Little Castle) and two 1st-category PZU KOMs at Ochodzita and Salmopol. The latter KOM is named after Joachim Halupczok, Poland’s 1988 Olympic medalist. There will also be three LOTTO Intermediate Sprints in Ustroń, Istebna and Wilkowice along the route of stage five.

The second last stage is a 16.6 kilometre individual time trial in Katowice. The route in Katowice traditionally winds through the streets of the city centre, featuring the transformation of the Silesian capital, including the Market Square with its characteristic palm trees and the Cultural Zone, where years ago the Katowice Mine operated. It has been replaced by the Silesian Museum, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the International Congress Centre. The riders will also have a chance to race through the unique Nikiszowiec district and the Valley of the Three Ponds, which illustrate how green the city is. The finish line will be at the Katowice Spodek.

Stage 7 ZABRZE – KRAKÓW – 166.6 km

The peloton will cover almost 167 kilometres from Zabrze to Krakow, where the race traditionally ends. The finish line will be in Krakow’s Błonia after the riders have completed three laps of the circuit on the city’s streets. Before arriving in Kraków, there will be the LOTTO Intermediate Finish in Wilamowice, the cat-3 PZU KOMs in Witanowice and Kaszów, and the Special Sprint SOUDAL – 95 Years of the Tour de Pologne in Budzyń. Finally, the podium ceremony for the protagonists of the 80th Tour de Pologne will take place in Krakow’s Błonia.

Last year it was British rider Ethan Hayter, Ineos Grenadiers, who won the general classification ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman and Spaniard Pello Bilbao.

The wait to find out who will be wearing this year’s ORLEN jersey as leader of the general classification at the finish in Krakow has already begun, as the Tour de Pologne UCI World Tour confirms its position as the most important stage race in Central Europe.
