Whether you go for fishing, hiking, or even just a pleasant picnic, you won’t want to miss the covered bridge or the park’s famed waterfalls, cascading about 250 feet to the river below.

There’s also a quaint art trail with some outdoor exhibits worth checking out while you’re here.

If your heart is intent upon enjoying the park (and it should be), be prepared to wait a bit before entering. There’s a 10-space parking lot with no other parking available, and the park is officially closed whenever the spaces are full, so you may need to cool your heels while others are exploring; fortunately, it’s not a heavily populated area. Kent is particularly picturesque in fall, when the  vibrant foliage  presents a brilliant scene.

Hartford: kick up your heels in the capital.

Hartford may not be Connecticut’s largest city, but it is the capital and it’s home to plenty of museums, historic houses, and outdoor activity. Start out by getting a feel for city and state history at the  Connecticut Historical Society , where you’ll find seven exhibits (including the permanent exhibit, “Making Connecticut”) at this home of hundreds of historical artifacts spanning all facets of city and state culture.

From here, head to the considerably larger  Connecticut Science Center , with six floors hosting more than 150 interactive exhibits that are both educational and entertaining, particularly for the younger members of your group who are welcome to touch.

Finish your museum marathon with the  Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art , where an enormous collection of primarily European and American art is housed within the castle walls of the country’s oldest, continually-operating art museum.

There are plenty of historic houses in Hartford, but the two you definitely won’t want to miss are  Mark Twain House , with architecture and design as fascinating as its famous former inhabitant and the classics he penned here, and  Harriet Beecher Stowe Center , leaving no doubt of Hartford’s indelible contribution to great American literature.

Finally, spend some time outdoors, choosing from the romance of  Elizabeth Park ‘s poetic settings and epic rose garden, the trails of  Bushnell Park  (the country’s oldest publicly funded park), or  Great River Park  with riverfront trails dotted by sporadic public art.

15 Fabulous Day Trips in Connecticut

Connecticut is in southwestern New England. It has a big city, fancy suburbs of New York City, a pretty coastline, and rural farmland. I did my residency in Hartford and lived just north of that area for about 5 years. Since Connecticut borders Rhode Island, I still visit often for day trips. Below are a few of my favorite Connecticut day trips.

Hike to Hublein Tower, Simsbury

A 1.25-mile hike through Talcott Mountain’s woods brings you to this tower with sweeping views of Connecticut, including Hartford.

Talcott Mountain is one of my top ten New England family hikes.

West Hartford Center

If you are in the mood to spend a day shopping and eating, West Hartford is the place to be. Here you can find almost any store you can think of. My favorite Connecticut restaurant, Restaurant Bricco , is on LaSalle Road.

New Haven is the Ivy League school’s home, Yale, and the home of some delicious wood-fired pizza. There is some controversy about who has the best, but the original is at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. There are often long lines, so it is good to show up right when they open. One of their most popular pizza is the white clam. While in town, visit the museums of Yale, such as the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Southwestern Connecticut

If you want to explore Connecticut’s rural side, try a road trip around the southwest corner of the state where you can drive past farms, go antiquing, visit wineries, and hike to waterfalls.

Connecticut Wine Trail

You can see the whole state, as well as have an amazing day visiting Connecticut’s 40 wineries, but of course, you would need a designated driver and drink safely.

A Day at Lavender Pond Farm, Killingworth

If you are in Connecticut in June or July, spend a peaceful day among the blooming, fragrant stems. The farm has chairs and games to play as well. This farm is on my list of the best flower fields around New England.

Clyde’s Cider Mill, Old Mystic

If you are visiting in the fall, be sure to join the party at Clyde’s Cider Mill, where you can see cider being pressed by a room-sized antique press and eat apple cider donuts. Right up the road, visit Whitehall Cemetery with graves dating back to the 1600s.

Sharpe Hill Winery, Pomfret

Start your day at the Lavender Hill Alpaca Farm in Voluntown. After getting your fill of these frilly-headed animals. Then take a hike around the Connecticut Audobon Society Bafflin Sanctuary. End your day with a wine tasting and dinner in Sharpe Hill’s beautiful old barn.

Lake Compounce

Devil’s Hopyard

Devil’s Hopyard is one of my favorite picnic spots in New England. On the two-mile hike, you can see a waterfall, covered bridge, and sweeping green views.

Explore the Connecticut River Valley

Take a boat ride on the river, explore Gillette Castle, take a train ride, or shop and eat in the charming town of Essex.

Visit Old Saybrook

Get a spa treatment at the Saybrook Point Resort and Spa. Walk through the Monument Park. Enjoy lunch on Main Street. A few of my favorite restaurants are the Penny Lane Pub or Liv’s Oyster Bar. Finish your day with a walk by the ocean or a peek at the Lynde Point Lighthouse.

Spend a Day at the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme

Around the turn of the twentieth century, Florence Griswold was running a boarding house on the Lieutenant River banks drawing painters to the area. This was the Lyme Artist Colony, the beginning and hub of American Impressionism. The house is open for touring, as well as a garden and a museum housing a large collection of impressionist paintings. Be sure to leave time for lunch on the veranda overlooking the river.

Mark Twain House

This gothic-style house in Hartford is where Samuel Clements raised his family. There are three buildings to tour, including the house.

I live in Boston, these are some really great things to see in CT. I love Mystic, it’s one of my favorite towns in New England. I actually wasn’t aware if the Lavender Fields, I’m going to need to check those out some year.

Those are some great ideas for day trips. I think I should like to do them all – from the lavender to antique hunting to the wine trail. Mystic has always been intriguing to me, and those waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard looks so scenic.

I have only done Mystic and its outdoor seaport museum in my only day in CT and I really do need to go back to the state to check out the natural beauty (or maybe the changing of the colours in the leaves in the fall). I am loving the waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard and would defo want to check these out. One place I would like to go is Hartford for a bit of history, as the founder of the town is from a town very near to my home in Hertford, in the UK. 🙂 So there is a little bit of a connection for me, not much, but its enough for me to get myself into gear and visit CT again 🙂

I have never been to Connecticut and this post makes me want to spend a week just exploring the day trips. I would first explore Devil’s Hopyard. A two-mile hike isn’t too bad especially if you get views of a waterfall and bridge. I’ll have to see if it’s pet-friendly too. I’m sure my pup would enjoy this hike as well.

This is a part of the US I’d really like to explore more! I didn’t know that Connecticut had a winery scene but checking out some of them sounds like a lot of fun! Mystic also looks like an interesting little town. I checked out your other post and the drawbridge does look unique with those concrete slabs!

There is also. Harkness park in Waterford Connecticut. it’s a mansion that used to Belong to a rich family. there is Alot to see. it’s surrounded by the ocean. flower gardens . it’s beautiful. Look it up!

Boasting a gorgeous coastline with some of New England's best beaches, historic seaside towns, beautiful scenery and burgeoning food and arts scenes, the nutmeg state has something for everyone. Easily accessible by car or train from New York City, you can fit a lot into a single weekend in Connecticut. The country’s third smallest state can deliver art, great eats and much-needed time by the water, in just 48 hours. For a mix of culture, history and nature, base yourself in New Haven. The town is easily accessible by public transit, and has the perks of being proximate to one of the world’s most venerable colleges and by the seaside, all at once.

The best way to start your weekend in Connecticut is with some good old-fashioned New England seafood. Shell and Bones on New Haven’s waterfront offers a feast for your eyes and stomach. Connecticut is known for its white pizza with clams–and you really shouldn’t leave the state without trying it. Hunt down superlative slices while getting a better lay of the land on a Pizza and Pints Bike Tour  (book your tickets in advance). This two-hour bike tour will hit some of the best pizza joints in metro New Haven, including Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana , Modern Apizza and Ernie's Pizzeria .

Downtown New Haven offers a college-town vibe with an eclectic urban edge. With more than seventy shops, boutiques and restaurants, you’re likely to have a successful shopping expedition, no matter your style. From May to September, you can enjoy a ferry ride to the lighthouse, which was in operation from 1868 until 1902 and is now a museum.

Once on the island, you can visit the historic site, hike on waterside trails, birdwatch and take in the natural beauty of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. There’s even a weekly clambake on Thursday evenings during the summer months.

There are two very different sides to Hartford, Connecticut: the “Insurance Capital of the World” and the thriving entertainment hub. This city isn’t all about business — it’s teeming with reasons to stay and play. What makes the city so charming is the way that old and new fuse together so seamlessly.

Victorian homes sit steps from modish restaurants. Longtime arts venues share the spotlight with the Yard Goats, the city’s much-loved Minor League Baseball team. And old haunts exist alongside booming modern-day breweries that put the city on beer enthusiasts’ maps.

Add to all that music events spanning everything from live performances along the riverfront to a long-standing annual jazz festival, and all of a sudden, three days may not feel like enough. But the good news is that the city’s many angles mean no two visits will feel exactly the same. Ahead, you’ll find some top picks that guarantee a fun-filled weekend in Hartford.

Friday: Embrace Downtown’s History

Start your day downtown with a pragel (pretzel + bagel) at G Café Bakery and enjoy them as you stroll through nearby Bushnell Park. The 37-acre green space includes sculptures, the two-tiered marble and stone Corning Fountain, a vintage carousel from 1914, the Connecticut State Capitol and the Museum of Connecticut History . The museum is free throughout the week, so take advantage before continuing your journey west to Asylum Hill, Hartford’s first suburb. There are a number of the original private homes still intact, like the gabled Gothic Revival Perkins-Clark House , which was built in 1861, near the corner of Woodland Street and Asylum Avenue.

Hartford has more than a few standout barbecue spots, so carve out time to stop at one of the best. Lunch at Black-Eyed Sally’s Southern Kitchen & Bar (the Asylum Street location) is always a good decision — the menu is peppered with sandwiches, brisket and the all-important sides. It’s the perfect spot to refuel before your main attraction of the day, the Mark Twain House & Museum . The author commissioned the High Victorian Gothic home and lived in the 11,500-square-foot space with his family from 1874 to 1891. Today it houses a museum and gorgeous gardens.

Take a break from the history lesson and head back downtown to Pratt Street, the best pre-dinner spot for pop-up shops and live music. Check the website to make sure you don’t miss any fun events while you’re in the area. Even if there isn’t anything official going on, the pedestrian-only street is lined with bars with outdoor seating. During baseball season, you’ll often find special pregame events with drink specials happening along the street.

When it comes time to dine, visit Sorella for wood-fired pizza and authentic Italian fare. Finish the day with a cocktail from L Bar , an airy spot with elevated takes on classic cocktails.

Hartford is home to some great breweries and you’ll experience some of them on your second night. Start with bar bites and the ales at Thomas Hooker Brewery at Colt . The taproom serves up delectable bites like jerk mushroom tacos and chicken sliders that are perfect for a shareable supper. Given Hartford’s year-round appeal, there is always something going on. Before your visit, explore the city’s festival and events calendar for any special itinerary items. For example, Bushnell Park hosts live music in the summer months, including New England’s largest free jazz festival in July, and the Riverfront is the site of Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival in August. April through September, the Minor League Baseball team (delightfully named the Yard Goats) fill up the stands at Dunkin’ Park.

Wherever your afternoon takes you, make your way downtown for one last swanky feast at Raw (make sure to reserve a table). The interiors are part fancy and part edgy, and Raw’s menu reflects its name with an impressive raw bar. The coconut sake mussels and grilled whole prawns are a must, along with a variety of seafood entrées that offer a twist on beloved New England classics.

End the trip with some entertainment: You can never go wrong catching a show at The Bushnell , a performing arts center that hosts international comedians, concerts and musicals (past acts have included John Oliver and performances like “Wicked” and “Cinderella”). Once the curtains lower, take a 13-minute walk to Vaughan’s Public House for a Guinness nightcap — a wonderful end to your Hartford adventure.

The Perfect Weekend in Greenwich, Connecticut

Just a 40-minute train ride from Grand Central Station , Greenwich, Connecticut typically lives in the shadow of New York City, overlooked as a tourist destination and branded little more than a wealthy suburb of the city. But this stately town on the New York-Connecticut border is hardly the doldrums of suburbia. Envy-inducing mansions rise on hillsides that are peppered with pre-Revolutionary historic sites. Manhattan represents—albeit in a lighter fashion—along Greenwich’s principal thoroughfare, “the Ave.,” which is punctuated by recognizable high-end retailers and upscale restaurants. Meanwhile, nearby Old Greenwich feels lost in time with 19th-century architecture and mom-and-pop stores. Best of all, though, is Greenwich’s unspoiled nature. Birdlife rules on Great Captain’s Island and beautiful beaches edge the uninhabited peninsula of Greenwich Point Park. At its core, this is New England inhabited by New Yorkers, where urbanites can take a breather.

CHECKING IN

For your Greenwich home base, choose the family-owned, waterfront Delamar Greenwich Harbor , one of the top New England hotels in the 2016 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards . Request a Harbor view room at the 82-key hotel, which is within walking distance of “the Ave.” and opposite the Arch Street ferry dock, the point of departure for seasonal service to Island Beach and Great Captain’s Island. There’s a generous pour of Laurent-Perrier champagne at check-in and complimentary wine and cheese on weekend evenings.

Alternatively, sleep among the mansions and manors of Belle Haven at Homestead Inn–Thomas Henkelmann . Henkelmann’s award-winning contemporary French restaurant anchors this Relais & Châteaux property, where his wife, Theresa, designed the 18 rooms of the 19th-century manor and carriage house. Grand Luxury Suites come adorned with singular antiques and artifacts (e.g. the olive green Room 124 with beaded African masks and hand-carved crown moulding from Morocco).

DAY ONE: SHOP THE AVE.

Get to Greenwich by early afternoon to avoid rush hour mayhem and to do a little shopping (it’s lights off at most stores by 6 p.m.). After check-in, stroll the mile-long Ave. with stops at Richards , a classic department store that remains family-owned; the sole U.S. outpost of Togas , a luxury Greek home textile store; Winston Flowers , a New England-based flower shop where floral displays transcend art; and Betteridge , a family jeweler in Greenwich since 1952 that’s nationally known for its watch collection.

For dinner, book ahead at l’escale for excellent ocean-to-table Mediterranean food and a side of the Greenwich “scene.” Executive chef and Frenchman Frederic Kieffer makes an amazing bouillabaisse Provençal (stocked with branzino, monkfish, scallop, rock shrimp, and mussels) and Duck “a l’Orange” with whipped rutabaga and Brussels sprout duck slaw. Pre- or post- dinner, grab a cocktail in the adjacent lounge, where each drink is named after a black-and-white film. (We love the “How to Marry a Millionaire”: house-made berry Belvedere vodka, elderflower liqueur, and lychee.)

DAY TWO: OLD GREENWICH & FINE DINING

Start your day by heading to Old Greenwich, a neighborhood dating to 1640, and its picturesque, single-street downtown. Grab breakfast to go or sit down for a bigger brunch at small-batch bakery and coffee roaster Sweet Pea's Baking Company . We’re still thinking about the banana crumb muffins, the Nutella doughnuts sprinkled with hazelnuts, and the caramel cinnamon buns topped with a scoop—no going back now—of cream cheese frosting. Walk the carbs off by weaving in and out of the mom-and-pop shops: Back 40 Mercantile , a new take on an old-fashioned general store, sells regionally made candles and ceramics and hyper-local products like “Ggachis,” handmade Tootsie rolls.

Drive south to Greenwich Point Park—known locally by the name of its most scenic lookout, Tod’s Point—for the all-season beaches of this unspoiled peninsula. (The New York City skyline is visible from here on a clear day.) If you're traveling with kids in tow, consider renting an oh-so-Old-Greenwich Dutch Box Bike (think: a bike-wagon hybrid from the Netherlands) to explore the park. In the warmer months, expect to spend more time at Tod’s Point, where the community sailing club offers kids’ sailing lessons and adults can rent paddle boards. (Note that a park/beach pass from the Department of Parks and Recreation is required during peak summer months.)

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, visit the Bush-Holley historic site , a house-turned-museum built in 1728 that later became the center of Connecticut’s first art colony in the late 19th century. This is where Impressionism took off in America with artists like Childe Hassam in residence.

Save your appetite for a multi-course meal at standout French restaurant Thomas Henkelmann . A recent menu included Perigord black truffles royale with Maine lobster bisque and lobster ragout (that's just the starter) and Atlantic Halibut filet in a potato crust. The warm Valrhona chocolate soufflé cake topped with house-made pistachio ice cream and candied pistachios didn’t disappoint, either.

DAY THREE: BRUNCH & BROWSE

Finish off the weekend with a bit of pampering at The Spa at Delamar . Since it’s the best of its kind in Greenwich and often booked out by locals, we recommend scheduling a treatment in advance. Facials are the main draw here—and why wouldn't they be when they're named “Vitality of Glaciers Pamper Your Skin"?

Post facial or massage, grab brunch back where you started—on the Ave. Go to The National, the latest restaurant from celebrity chef and TV personality Geoffrey Zakarian, where breakfast classics get an Iron Chef makeover. (Sweet potato duck hash and omelets stuffed with marinated artichoke, piperade, ricotta salata? Yes, please.) A few bellinis or Bloody Marys later, walk over to the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science . This small museum makes a big impression with its world-class rotating art and natural history exhibitions, which, until July 16, 2017, includes “Last Days of Pangea: In the Footsteps of Dinosaurs,” highlighting pre-historic discoveries from the modern-day Connecticut Valley.

I know we often think of Mystic as a great place to visit with kids because of the Historic Seaport and Aquarium, but there is more to Mystic to enjoy.

The Morgan Suite in the 1865 House is perfect for a romantic getaway, featuring two rooms and a double-sided gas fireplace with views over Main Street in the sitting room.
