What travelers say about their trips to Cuba

Travel tips for a trip to cuba.

Cuba is rich with arts, culture, history, food, and natural scenery, and there’s far too much for travelers to fully experience in just a few days’ time. Our Cuba tours are 10 days long (or 13, if you opt for our extension to West Cuba) to give travelers plenty of time to take it all in.

Thanks to its location in the Caribbean, Cuba is warm all year round. If you’re considering vacation packages to Cuba, keep in mind the country’s wet and dry seasons.

  • The dry season, which lasts from November through April and peaks in January and February, is an ideal time of year to visit Cuba. Travelers who book Cuba travel packages this time of year will enjoy pleasant weather and little rainfall.
  • The rainy season lasts from May through October, with August and September typically receiving the most rain. If you plan to travel to Cuba during the wet season, be sure to bring an umbrella and weatherproof clothing.
  • Regardless of the weather, Cuba hosts lively festivals throughout the year. Carnival, which comes to Havana in August, is among the country’s most colorful and festive events—and an excellent reason to consider Cuba travel packages during that month.

For many travelers, Cuba is one of the most intriguing countries in Latin America . With its preserved colonial architecture, old-fashioned cars, fascinating history, and unspoiled landscapes, it’s no wonder why. Here are several highlights travelers can experience on our Cuba escorted tours:

  • Old Havana.  This historic part of Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to several of the city’s most beautiful and historically significant structures.
  • Plaza Vieja.  When you visit Cuba, this city square and bustling gathering spot in Old Havana is where you’ll find notable buildings, such as the 18th-century Casa del Conde de Jaruco.
  • Museum of the Revolution.  Housed in Havana’s former Presidential Palace, this museum details the Fidel Castro-led overthrow of former dictator Fulgencio Batista’s government.
  • Guanabacoa.  This neighborhood in Havana is known for its Afro-Cuban food, music, arts, and culture, as well as its namesake museum.
  • Finca Vigía.  Literature buffs who visit Cuba won’t want to miss seeing this former residence of Ernest Hemingway in Havana, where he wrote some of his most famous works.
  • Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro.  This clifftop fortress, complete with a lighthouse, was built in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect Havana’s harbor from pirates and foreign invaders.
  • Hotel Nacional de Cuba.  This hotel in Havana is considered a symbol of Cuban history, culture, and identity. Travelers on our Cuba tours can explore historical objects displayed throughout the hotel, and enjoy a mojito, Cuba’s signature drink.
  • Che Guevara Mausoleum.  Situated in Santa Clara, this memorial houses the remains of the famed revolutionary fighter Che Guevara. At the site, travelers will also find a statue of Guevara, and a museum that chronicles his life.
  • Bay of Pigs.  With support from the U.S. government, in April 1961 Cuban exiles attempted—and failed—to invade Cuba via this turquoise bay on the country’s southwest coast. The site’s historical significance makes it a popular spot for history buffs on Cuba educational tours.
  • Cayo Levisa.  If you want to enjoy nature when you travel to Cuba, you won’t want to miss this island off Cuba’s northern coast. It’s accessible via ferry and is home to coral reefs, mangrove forests, birds, and marine life.
  • Trinidad.  Cobblestone streets and beautifully restored buildings make the town of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a must-visit for travelers on our organized trips to Cuba.
  • Sancti Spíritus.  Founded in the 16th century, this city is the oldest in interior Cuba and charms travelers on Cuba vacations with its colorful architecture and narrow streets.
  • Viñales.  This culturally rich area, situated near the western end of Cuba and surrounded by mountains, is a hub of agricultural production—particularly tobacco.

Check out some of staffer Ashley’s favorite ways to soak up culture in Cuba -->

  • Lightweight clothing.  Cuba is in the Caribbean and stays warm all year round. Keep cool and comfortable in lightweight clothing made from materials such as linen.
  • Sun protection.  The sun can be quite strong in Cuba. We recommend that travelers going on our trips to Cuba pack brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as well as clothing and accessories that can shield bare skin from the sun’s rays.
  • A light rain jacket.  We suggest that travelers on tours of Cuba, especially those who depart during the wet season, bring a lightweight rain jacket or small umbrella.
  • A camera.  Cuba is unique for many reasons, including the fact that it’s filled with well-preserved buildings and cars that give the island country its famously vintage atmosphere. If you plan to travel on one of our tours to Cuba, pack your camera so you don’t miss a single shot.
  • Cash.  American credit and debit cards aren’t accepted or usable in Cuba, so be sure to bring cash that you can spend or convert to the local currency.
  • Sturdy walking shoes or sneakers.  Good shoes will help you navigate cobblestone streets, farms, and a variety of other surfaces with ease.
  • A bathing suit.  Travelers who join our trips to Cuba can snorkel at the Bay of Pigs and Cayo Levisa.
  • Mosquito repellent.  Mosquitoes thrive in Cuba’s warm, humid climate. If you book one of our Cuba packages, be sure to bring repellent that will keep them away.
  • Washcloths.  Most hotels in Cuba do not provide them.
  • Hand sanitizer.  Handwashing facilities aren’t always readily available in Cuba. Bring some hand sanitizer just in case.

Spanish, African, and Caribbean flavors play an important part in traditional Cuban dishes. Common foods often include pork, chicken, yucca, plantains, beans, and rice. Cuban coffee is also popular and is known for being strongly brewed. Travelers who book Cuba vacation packages can try these signature dishes on tour:

  • Ropa vieja.  This hearty stew, made with shredded beef, tomato sauce, onions, and peppers, and served with rice, is the national dish of Cuba.
  • Medianoche.  Similar to the popular Cuban sandwich, this one is filled with ingredients such as shredded pork, pickles, and mustard, but it’s served on an egg-based bread. Its name translates to midnight in Spanish—perhaps a nod to its popularity as a late-night snack among partygoers.
  • Vaca frita.  To make this dish, whose name translates to “fried beef,” meat is boiled until soft, then shredded, marinated in garlic, lime juice, and salt, and pan-fried for a crispy finish. It’s often served with rice.
  • Picadillo.  The Cuban take on this popular Latin comfort food is made with ground beef, vegetables, and seasonings. Other flavorful ingredients vary by region and can include raisins, olives, and capers. Like many other dishes you’re likely to try on our tours in Cuba, it’s often served with rice.
  • Plátanos maduros.  Ripe, fried plantains are a beloved side dish and snack in Cuba.
  • For Americans, visiting Cuba is a complex process. Our guided tours make it easy, not just because we plan your itinerary from start to finish, but we also help with all of the necessary entry requirements, such as visas. Ease of travel is just one of  four reasons to take a guided tour of Cuba .
  • Two currencies are used in Cuba. The first is the Cuban Peso, which is used primarily by the locals for basic, staple products. The second is the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC), mostly used by tourists. The currency you will be using for your tour is the CUC.
  • Visitors who book Cuba travel packages from USA gateways land in Havana, the country’s historic capital city. In Cuba, you can exchange American or Canadian dollars for CUC at the Havana airport, as well as hotels, exchange bureaus, and in some banks. Currently, there is a 13%–15% surcharge fee for exchanging USD or CAD to CUC.
  • When exchanging currency, your passport will be required at the time of the transaction. It is also important to note that most places will not accept torn or marked bills when converting to CUC.
  • Credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards issued by U.S. banks are currently unusable in Cuba. As such, purchases and payments for services must be made in local currency. You should plan on bringing enough cash with you for meals that are not included and anything else you may wish to purchase.
  • Although some small businesses and taxi drivers will accept American dollars, paying in CUC is strongly encouraged. Canadian dollars are widely accepted.
  • Our advice for travelers who book vacation packages to Cuba: Come with an open mind and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Cuba’s people are warm and outgoing, and they can provide unique insight into a country that remains somewhat of a mystery to many travelers. Don’t be afraid to engage with locals, whether that means chatting about their country’s complex history, or even taking a spin on the dance floor with them during a salsa lesson.

Trip Reviews & Photos

We love hearing your stories and seeing your photos! Check out our entire fan photo gallery and upload your photos.

Havana A throwback to another generation, Havana's old-world charm is a glimpse into the heart of this fascinating country. Old cobbled plazas and historic buildings turned museums are juxtaposed with popular nightclubs and hotels that still exude a 1950s atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to explore Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of narrow and winding cobbled streets and almost 1,000 buildings of historical significance. Paladares, private restaurants Amid a culinary revolution, dining in Cuba becomes an adventure as thousands of little-known (and sometimes even secret!) independent restaurants have exploded across the island. Relaxed government regulations on private business have facilitated this growing industry—with more than 2,000 newly opened eateries. Innovative restaurateurs have opened up in surprising locations, offering experiences that often rival dining in London or Paris. The flavorful food and atmosphere are comforting and authentic, and rich and complex dishes shatter the "rice and beans" stereotype. Don't forget to grab a freshly made mojito to follow your savory  ropa vieja  (braised, shredded beef)! Classic American cars Travel back in time as you ride in style in one of Havana's classic American cars. In the early 20th century, these incredibly-maintained automobiles were imported to Cuba for around 50 years; however, importing the classic cars came to a halt after the Cuban revolution. Today, Cuba is seen as a living museum for vintage cars, as it is common to see them in many different colors cruising along the streets. It's estimated that there are about 60,000 classic American cars in Cuba, with some dating back to the early 1930s! Casa Particular, Havana El Encanto de Perserverancia, the Cuban Bed and Breakfast on our  Authentic Havana  and  Authentic Havana & the Scenic Vinales Valley  tours, is a highlight in itself. This B&B, or casa particular, was hand-picked by our President Peggy Goldman during her many trips to Havana. It is a traditional colonial-style house that has been lovingly restored and converted into charming accommodations. The casa is privately owned, meaning your money goes directly into the pockets of the locals, and it offers a much more authentic, intimate, and satisfying stay versus the huge government-run hotels in the city. Our casa is also centrally located, only a seven-minute walk from the Malecon, the city's iconic sea wall. In addition, it is within easy walking distance of several trendy restaurants, including La Guarida, frequented by many American celebrities when they visit Havana. Plus, we give you the genuine experience of staying in a real Havana community with schools, cafes, and local shops nearby while only being a short drive from touristic Old Havana.

Cuba Tours & Travel Guide

Cuba Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Cuba video

Long closed to most U.S. travelers, Cuba is now subject to fewer travel restrictions, and Americans are discovering what the rest of the world has known for years: the island nation 90 miles south of Florida has friendly people, a vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and 1950's-era cars that still run. No matter the politics, Cuba and its people are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Visiting Cuba is like entering a time warp. Because of longtime Cuban government restrictions placed on the purchase of imported cars, many Cubans have had to ingeniously make do with American cars dating from the 1950s and early 1960s.

Replacement parts are scarce but clever mechanics have found ways to keep them running. Hence a trip to Cuba is much like watching a classic car rally, except that these classic cars are in full use as taxis and private vehicles.

The time warp continues in the aging houses and mansions you encounter on a guided Cuba tour in Old Havana , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the best preserved city center in the Caribbean . Many have Spanish-style balconies, arcades, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards. Some appear to be on life support but remain standing, much as the classic cars keep running.

Visiting Cuba Today

Cuba is experiencing a surge in interest due to the recent restoration of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuban governments. This beautiful and elusive country is now more accessible to one of its closest neighbors and American travelers are itching to visit.

There are still some travel restrictions in place for US citizens however. As relaxing as it might sound, it's still technically illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba to laze on the beach, mojito in hand.

However, the OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) does permit American travel to Cuba, provided it fits within 1 of 12 general categories. One of the most popular of these is 'educational activities' and tour operators have long led 'people to people' tours, which include activities like visiting with local musicians, farmers, and artisans. This is how the majority of American citizens have legally traveled to Cuba for the past few years.

More recently, travel regulations were further relaxed, giving tour operators even more flexibility with the types of itineraries they run in Cuba. This means virtually any tour in Cuba is legal for American travelers, but always check direct with the tour operator first.

Options for Cuba travel include primarily  guided tours in Cuba . T aking a tour is one of the best ways to have an authentic experience in this rich and diverse country. Taking a tour doesn't mean being stuck in a large group on a coach bus either. Some companies limit their groups to 10-15 like-minded travelers to provide an intimate, accessible experience.

Why Consider a Tour In Cuba?

Although traveling to Cuba independently is now possible, it’s still wise to consider a tour . Due to the increased demand, hotel rooms in popular cities like Havana and Trinidad are hard to come by. This means that unless you plan many months in advance, you might be relegated to a less than desirable hotel that isn’t centrally located. Cuba tour operators , on the other hand, purchase rooms in bulk up to a year in advance, so you are guaranteed a room in some of the country’s most famous and beautiful accommodations.

The infrastructure in Cuba, specifically the road and transportation network, are still quite basic and developing. It can be hard to get around from city to city and all of the signs are in Spanish. Speaking of language barriers, it’s a challenge to find many English speakers outside of hotels and major tourist attractions.

On a tour, you’ll hit the major tourist sites, such as El Floridita (where Hemingway himself used to drink) but you’ll also have a chance to meet local artists and business people - all who can offer unique glimpses into the current affairs of this fascinating country. Tour guides can often show you a side of Cuba that you’d otherwise miss if traveling independently.

Must See Cuban Cities

Tours in Cuba often begin in Havana , with the most direct flights from Miami and other US cities. However, it is recommended to explore beyond the famous capital city, venturing farther afield to places like Vinales Valley, Trinidad, and Santa Clara. These ‘secondary’ cities have less tourists, but offer unique cultural and natural experiences that are not to be missed.

The small city of Vinales , and the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage Site Vinales Valley, lies a few hours to the west of Havana.  If Havana is like stepping back to the 1950’s, it can be said that visiting Vinales harkens back even further to the 19th century.

This largely agricultural area, where crops such as coffee and tobacco are still grown following centuries old traditions, is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. The lush landscape is dotted with karsts which attract climbers and hikers alike. The region is also known for its music and arts scene, much like other parts of Cuba. See best Cuba travel packages to Vinales  »

Trinidad & Topes de Collantes

The beautiful cobblestoned-street city of Trinidad lies in the southern part of the island, about a 6 hours drive on Cuba’s notoriously choppy roads. Yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, Trinidad has been beautifully preserved to its colonial charms. Artist galleries and restaurants with live music line the narrow cobblestone streets. Walking through an open door might reveal a couple of men playing dominos on a plastic table or a traditional pig roast in process.

Visit the Plaza Major to experience an open air colonial architecture museum and then check out live music next to the cathedral in the same location. Although accommodation is hard to come by, many Cuba tours make stops in Trinidad to take in its authenticity.

Trinidad also acts as a great jumping off point for Cuba adventures into Topes de Collantes , one of Cuba’s many national parks. Located about 12 miles from the city, Topes de Collantes lies in a mountainous region home to a plethora of flora and fauna, many endemic to Cuba.

Guided hikes are available around the park and are mostly mellow over well blazed trails. There are opportunities to hike with a local naturalist, who can point out local bird varieties. Other hikes end at picturesque waterfalls where a cool swim is inviting in the tropical heat. Topes de Collantes is most popular with local Cubans on vacation, although many tourists, especially Europeans, are starting to discover its charms.

Santa Clara

Santa Clara is located is close proximity to Havana, due east about 3 hours. It’s probably most famous for being the place where revolutionary fighter Che Guevara is buried, and thousands of tourists flock here to see his final resting place. This historic city is also where the final battle of the Cuban Revolution took place in 1958.

Two columns of revolutionary fighters attacked the city, one led by Che. After intense fighting, the city was captured, and hours later, General Batista, then leader of Cuba, left the country. Santa Clara is a tour highlight for history buffs and a common stopping point on the drive from Havana to Trinidad.

Music & Art in Cuba

There’s something about being in Cuba that brings out the dancer even in those who travel with two left feet. It’s no mystery: the music -- salsa, jazz, rumba, merengue, and other genres, often combined into a unique Afro-Cuban sound -- is both ubiquitous and irresistible. You’ll hear it in clubs, bars, restaurants, bodegas, or just emanating from the nearest homes.

In Havana, there is live music on many street corners, including outside most of the major hotels. If you desire something more formal and organized, the famous Cuban band The Buena Vista Social Club still performs most nights in a bar in Old Havana. While many of the original founders of the group have passed or are no longer playing, a few still remain.

Many tours include a night out to hear these legends of Cuban jazz and it’s well worth the relatively expensive cover charge. Many times, the musicians will hang around after the set and if your Spanish is decent, striking up a conversation could be one of the highlights of your trip.

Other opportunities to see live music include the rooftop bar of the Hotel Inglaterra, located near Parque Central, where a salsa or rumba ensemble plays most nights. There are also a number of dance clubs around Havana, including Casa de la Musica de Miramar, El Turquino, and Cabaret Parisien, which hosts an elaborate cabaret show, complete with flowered dancers.

Believe it or not, some of the most authentic music in Cuba can be heard while sitting outside having dinner at a paladares, or local restaurant, in Old Havana. Small groups of musicians will approach your table and give you a private concert, of course in exchange for a few pesos.

Many famous artists, such as Wifredo Lam, have come out of Cuba, however, many are still relatively unknown due to the isolation of the country for so many years. For authentic local Cuban art, a visit to the El Taller Experimental de Grafica is a must. This artist workshop, founded in 1962 with the support of infamous revolutionary Che Guevara, is still a thriving studio today. Inside, artists of all ages delicately create traditional prints using decades old techniques. Prints are for sale and you can discuss the pieces of art direct with the artist, which is a special experience.

Other top art galleries include Galeria Victor Manuel, Galeria Habana, and Fototeca de Cuba, which houses the country’s largest collection of photographs. Although many tours will only include a stop at the Museo de Nacional, most itineraries offer ample free time to explore these artistic havens on your own.

Art is also central to Cuban life, from Havana’s excellent National Museum of Fine Arts to street corner painters and much in between.

The Hemingway Legacy

You might be surprised to learn that American author Ernest Hemingway -- a longtime resident of Havana, where he wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Moveable Feast" among other works -- is still venerated in Cuba. His finca, where he lived just outside Havana throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, is maintained as a museum,  and a popular stop on most tour itineraries .

Everything is kept the way he left it, except that a new set of cats (many of which have six toes, the progeny of Hemingway’s own fleet of stray cats), now curl up on his desk for naps.  One of the most intimate glimpses into Hemingway’s sometimes lonely existence is apparent by the writing on the bathroom wall of his home. This is where he recorded his daily weight, in pencil. At some point in history, the writing was covered up, only to be discovered by museum curators years later while conducting restoration around the home.

You can also visit many of his old haunts around Havana such as El Floridita, said to be the birthplace of the daiquiri (one of Hemingway’s favorite libations) and La Bodeguita del Medio, which serves as a virtual Hemingway memorial (though still a working bar, with plenty of atmosphere). Both places can get very crowded with tourists and there are better drinks in town. However, it can be worth the stop for any literary buffs who’d like to sit side by side with Hemingway’s statue at the bar.

Another Hemingway haunt worth a visit is La Terraza Restaurant, located in the small fishing village of Cojimar, about 20 minutes from Havana. This is the very place depicted in his novel ‘Old Man and the Sea’ and the walls are adorned with black and white photos of the author himself, including many of him dining at La Terraza. It’s no surprise that Hemingway chose this seaside gem as a top spot in Cuba.

Best Beaches in Cuba

While Americans can’t go to Cuba just for a beach vacation yet, (if that's what you're after, consider the best travel packages to Costa Rica ) other nationalities can -- and if you’re in a position to visit one of the island’s 300-some sandy beaches, you may find yourself mostly alone despite the glorious settings.

Among Cuba’s finest beaches are the white-sand Playa Ancon (on the southern, Caribbean side of the island) and 12-mile-long, white-sand Varadero Beach, the best known beach in the country. Both offer crystal clear waters for swimming or snorkeling. Be warned though that if you are looking for seclusion, you won’t find it at Playa Ancon or Playa Varadero. Both are well-trodden with tourists and feature many all inclusive resorts.

Other top beaches include Playa Los Flamencos, located within Cayo Coco off Cuba’s north shore. There are three main beaches in this idyllic location, although Los Flamencos offers the most privacy and tranquility.

Playa Pilar was the choice beach of Ernest Hemingway himself. He spent so much time here that the beach was named after his yacht, the Pilar. This bit of sand on the western tip of Cayo Guillermo is probably one of the least popular beaches in the region, for now.

Playa Los Pinos is perhaps the most deserted beach in all of Cuba. Getting here requires an off-road ride that is not accessible by public transport. But for the intrepid beach goers who make the trip, the reward is a long white sand beach where your only companions might be a band of wild horses.

Playa Esmeralda is a good spot for those wanting a bit of understated luxury. This smaller beach features two luxury hotels that are tastefully situated as not to be an eyesore on the pristine beach environment. If you’re looking to relax and recharge for a few days, in style, this might be the place for you.

Food in Cuba

Cuban food is often thought of as beans and rice, which are indeed served at many meals and can be delicious, but there’s much more to it than that. The cuisine has Spanish, French, African, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic influences, along with Caribbean favorites such as fried plantains, similar to but different from bananas.

Stews and many other dishes use a base of sofrito (onion, green pepper, garlic, oregano) for flavoring; more contemporary cuisine includes Spanish-style tapas. Coffee is on the strong side and Cuban sandwiches -- ham, pork, pickle, cheese, and mustard on bread -- are among the world’s best. Besides regular restaurants, a number of private homes, called paladares,  now serve as eateries offering authentic local cuisine.

This is great news for visitors as you not only get a fresh, delicious meal, but also the opportunity to catch a glimpse of local, everyday life. Tour companies have caught on and many now include at least one meal at some of the best paladares in Havana such as Doña Eutimia and Le Chansonnier. Just don’t expect a quick meal - Cubans take their time and you should to. Besides, what can beat sitting outside on a warm Havana night, sipping a mojito and eating freshly caught prawns tossed in garlic and pepper while waiting for your main dish of ropa vieja?

Vegetarians and pescatarians should have no trouble finding something to eat, although the former may need to get used to a steady diet of rice, beans, and salad for a few days. Seafood lovers, however, will found a bounty of diverse and fresh options from the surrounding waters.

Regardless of your diet or culinary preferences, you are sure to find something tasty and flavorful in Cuba as long as you are willing to be patient and explore some of the hidden gems in Havana and beyond.

Ultimately, the Cuban people themselves are the stars of any visit to the island. And the best way to meet them is by organized tour, featuring people-to-people encounters.

Before you go

Visas are required for all American citizens traveling to Cuba. Most tour operators usually include this fee in the price of the trip, or have a separate visa fee that is paid once your trip is confirmed. Either way, it’s a good idea to book a Cuba trip with a tour company who will handle the visa logistics for you. UK citizens also must obtain a tourist card before traveling to Cuba.

Medical care in Cuba is quite good, with more doctors per capita than many other countries. However, you should always travel with insurance and many tour operators can recommend a plan to cover you while on your trip. Only routine vaccinations are required for Cuba, however, the CDC does recommend both Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccinations for some travelers.

Cuba is generally very safe compared to other Central and South American countries. Police are everywhere, and especially apparent in high tourist locations. However, as when traveling in any foreign country, use common street sense and pay attention to your surroundings. This is especially true in Havana, Trinidad and other large cities. Crimes of opportunity, such as pick-pocketing, are not unheard of, but a little vigilance goes a long way, and traveling in a group can help deter any potential trouble.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $499  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck trip for entry into Cuba. You will also need a visa to enter Cuba, the nature of which is somewhat different than what many other countries require. The Cuban government requires all foreign visitors to have a Cuban visa, sometimes referred to as a "Tourist Card," for which there is no official application process. Cuban immigration officials will collect one half of this two-part card upon your arrival in the country, and the other half upon your departure. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa, which will be given to you in Miami, along with the documents for your included charter flight from Miami to Havana.

In addition, other special documentation will be needed to complete the requirements for travel to Cuba; more details about this required documentation will be sent to you with your booking confirmation. Please review the details in the Instruction Sheet and  Travel Affidavit . You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

Please Note: Because many of you are traveling as a U.S. citizen with Tauck on a People-to-People educational exchange travel itinerary operated under a license granted to Tauck by the United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), you are legally licensed and authorized to travel to Cuba.  Before departing on your trip, we will give you a Letter of Authorization from Tauck stating that you have permission to travel under that license, to keep as part of your travel documents.

If you are a citizen of another country but legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship, as well as a residency card or alien card (or "green card") to establish your legal U.S. residency when returning to the U.S. from Cuba upon your arrival in Miami.

If you are a Cuban-born U.S. citizen, your travel document requirements depend on when you originally departed Cuba. If you departed Cuba prior to December 31, 1970, you will require either a PE-11 visa (which can take from six to eight weeks to process, is valid for a one-time entry for 30 days, and expires within 90 days of issue) or a Cuban passport; the choice is yours. If you left Cuba after January 1, 1971, you will require a Cuban passport, which can take from three to four months to obtain. If you will need help in obtaining one of these documents, please let us know at the time of booking.

If you are a citizen of another country and do not legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have the proper documentation that allows you to enter the U.S. for the start of the trip and return to the U.S. at the end of the trip. A multi-entry U.S. visa is required.

A travel affidavit is also required for all travelers to Cuba, regardless of nationality. Please use this link to apply for your travel affidavit at least 75 days prior to your trip: https://cubatravelservices.com/tauck-travel-affidavit/

Because all guests on this tour (U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike) will be arriving into Cuba from the U.S., a Cuban visa is required of all travelers. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa for you during your tour.

Please note that you will not be traveling to Cuba as a tourist. You will be traveling as part of the People-to-People educational exchange.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Health Safety and Mobility

Our People-to-People cultural exchange activities in Cuba include visits to rural areas, agricultural facilities and small villages, as well as to various sections of Havana with centuries-old streets and buildings with limited access. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Both the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove and the Meliá Habana are equipped with elevators.  The road conditions in Cuba are improving; however, paved roads, especially in rural areas, are often in poor condition. Some roads to rural locations are not paved and some out-of-the-way destinations are accessible only by these roads; other roads may be unpaved and bumpy. Our People-to-People cultural exchange itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Travelers should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one traveler.  Travelers requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at the hotels on the journey, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on your motor coach.

The only hotel on this trip that allows smoking is the Meliá Habana in Havana.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

We pride ourselves on creating tours which make wonderful memories and return customers.

My experience in Cuba was so enriched by the excellent planning by Mary and our “person on the ground” Abel.

This trip was so well balanced with experiencing the “real” countryside, the UNESCO site of Trinidad and the city life, art and history of Havana.  I am so glad to have seen Cuba NOW and with the guidance of Mary and Abel.

Best wishes for great trips ahead!!!

Cuba Traveler

Simply stated, I have yet to meet any tour guide who comes close to Mary’s magnetic personality, depth of knowledge, connections people – hotel concierges, taxi drivers, shopkeepers, artists, archaeologists, historians, or street people.

Everywhere we went she was greeted with warm embraces, smiles and joyful conversation. We were invited into private homes, artist studios, archaeological digs, cigar rollers and late night tango sessions. Mary created a trip (both in Cuba and Argentina) that were life-changing experiences for me, and for the people I traveled with.

I am convinced the best way to learn is to get off the tourist path and behind the scenes where the real Cuba exists. Cultural-Journeys did just this for our small group on a people to people exchange. I am totally fascinated by the people and country and ready to sign up for another adventure.

Our trip to Cuba with Mary Drobny was one of the highlights of my life. Mary made it the wonderful experience that it was. She made sure that we saw the cultural wonders of Havana, but she didn’t stop there. She introduced us to a priest who was doing heroic work with people with AIDS, she introduced us to artists, musicians, scuba divers, dancers, Santorian priests, restaurant owners, tour guides–all friends of hers. It was truly Havana and Trinidad by day and night. She did all in her power to customize the tour, and it was all so exciting. I would highly recommend Mary Drobny and her Cultural Adventures tour to everyone who wants to enjoy and gain perspective on Cuba!

Top Cuba Tour Operators for Americans

For the first time since the 1950s, Americans are allowed to travel legally to Cuba , but it's still not a simple process if you want to book a flight and hotel in Havana or Varadero, for both bureaucratic and supply related reasons. That's why Americans still book tours through companies that have won special approval from the U.S. State Department to run cultural-exchange trips to Cuba .

Going on a group tour means you're guaranteed not to run afoul of the still-sticky rules governing Cuba travel , which require that your trip focuses on cultural exchanges, not tourism (in other words, you should be meeting Cuban people and learning about their culture, not lying on the beach all day). Each of these companies has crafted tours full of cultural experiences that you'd be unlikely to arrange all on your own. Plus, you'll be traveling with companies that have had years of experience operating in Cuba and with guides who are intimately familiar with this fascinating country and its people.

Note that all Cuba tours are fully escorted, include all lodging and meals, and have a mandatory overnight in Miami for pre-trip trip orientation.

Insight Cuba

Insight Cuba is based in New Rochelle, N.Y., and has been bringing Americans to Cuba since 2000. Their tour schedule is especially diverse, with programs focused on music, baseball, and the Havana Marathon as well as tours that get visitors outside Havana to explore the still mostly undiscovered countryside. Their 4-day Weekend in Havana tour is a rare opportunity for a quick Cuban getaway.

Cuba Explorer

Canadians have been traveling to Cuba legally for decades— an experience that benefits this British Columbia based agency that also is licensed to bring U.S. citizens to Cuba. Programs include basic introductory tours, an Arts and Culture Tour to Havana, Trinidad and Cienfuegos, and a trip to the annual Havana International Jazz Festival.

Classic Journeys

Classic Journeys operates tours all over the world and has added Cuba to its offerings. Programs include a seven-night walking tour, a family-oriented program designed with children and teens in mind, and a Havana weekend tour that includes stops at Ernest Hemingway's house, salsa lessons, and a stay in Old Havana.

Friendly Planet Tours

In addition to the typical Havana and Cuba introductory tours, Friendly Planet offers an itinerary that includes a stop in Varadero, the beach destination most visited by non-U.S. travelers.

International Expeditions

This ecotourism company specializing in nature travel offers two Cuba tours: one focused on Havana and the city of Trinidad and a longer journey that includes visits to the wetlands of the Zapata Peninsula, a boat trip through limestone caves off the coast of Vinales, and a stop at a farm that raises tobacco for Cuba's famous cigars.

YMT Vacations

YMT Vacations is an international travel company that offers a single 8-night Cuba itinerary that includes stops in Old Havana, the historic towns of Santa Clara and Remedios, a tobacco farm, and the usual cultural, musical and artistic performances and visits required under the "support for the Cuban people" travel rules.

Central Holidays

Another legal Cuba travel pioneer, Central Holidays offers a 7-night "Havana: Then and Now" tour and a 9-day program that takes in Havana and the less-traveled historic cities of Camaguey, Trinidad, and Cienfuegos.

In Touch Travel Services

In Touch offers four Cuba tours with some interesting twists, including programs focusing on the island's Spanish colonial history, Afro Cuban culture and music, and a rare chance to visit the east coast towns of Guantanamo and Baracoa.

Cuba is for seniors, too! ElderTrek's comprehensive, 13-day tour of Cuba takes in Havana, the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, the history of the Cuban revolution in Santa Clara, Afro Cuban music, and more.

Collette Tours

New England based Collette Tours, one of the nation's biggest tour companies, runs a Rediscover Cuba tour several times a year; the itinerary includes visits to Havana and Trinidad, a steam train ride to a sugar plantation, a choral concert, and more.

Luxury Travel in Cuba

Why should you travel to cuba with us.

Pastel-hued villages, rum-scented squares and cigar-rolled plantations. Cuba is a favourite on our list.

After its renowned 1959 revolution, Cuba was mostly closed off from the outside world. In recent years, this colourful country has climbed back on to the world stage, drawing attention and welcoming visitors to explore its hidden treasures. Blending Latin and Caribbean influences, Cuba’s sensory world of art, music and gastronomy is mesmerising. Take a step into the past as colonial-era architecture sets the scene, Cadillacs roam the roads and jazz music fills the streets. Looking to experience Cuba’s artistic culture or explore the famed sugar plantations? With us, you’ll see that and much more.

Example Cuba trips

Cayman islands + cuba: the ultimate twin trip, colonial cities and cultural discoveries in cuba, havana, santiago & baracoa: off the beaten track…, havana: a unique cuban city break, create your own itinerary, what to see and do in cuba.

As ever, if you can’t see it here then we can still plan it for you.

After its renowned 1959 revolution, Cuba was mostly closed off from the outside world. In recent years however it has burst back onto the world stage. A luxury vacation in Cuba will immerse you into a sensory world of music, arts and eating, all set against the rum-soaked scenery of its colonial-era architecture and time-capsule streetlife, where antique Cadillacs still throng the roads of Old Havana. When we talk about luxury here, we’re not talking about gold-plated taps. We’re alluding to the on-the-ground access we can provide, which plays out across settings that are undoubtedly glamorous, stylish, and infinitely chic. Our local guides will truly immerse you into Cuba.

WHAT MAKES CUBA UNIQUE?

Havana, Cuba

With so much to offer with any luxury vacation to Cuba, there’s no replacing an expert tour around its bustling, iconic capital; letting you dive headfirst into its curious cultural life and historical legacies. Havana stands out as one of the most fascinating cultural hubs in this part of the world – filled with historic plazas and laidback eateries. During your Cuban vacation, you can also retrace the steps of Ernest Hemingway – the ‘Old Man’ himself. The famously bullish American author made a home here for many years, which has been celebrated with the endlessly fascinating Hemingway Museum and the house that was his base.

A TOUR THROUGH OLD HAVANA

Havana, Cuba

Once you leave the cities behind you, Cuba opens up into a landscape of staggering natural beauty. Particularly true of the East of Cuba, where we send clients on a journey to the Afro-Cuban stronghold of Santiago de Cuba, revolutionary legacies in the jaw-dropping Sierra Maestra Mountains and the hidden coves and fishing villages of the area’s rarely trodden coastline. Our private guides are on hand throughout these luxury Cuban tours to introduce you to hidden-away locales like the waters of the Yara River, where you can ride, hike and explore the surrounding landscapes. Which almost defy description, with their rugged coastlines, wild rivers, palm-covered hills, and secluded lodges.

COVES AND STRONGHOLDS

cuba tours from usa

Cuba’s rollercoaster recent history has been the subject of innumerable books and films. But it’s important not to overlook its enviable offer of scenic hotels, exquisite dining, and cultural events for discerning travelers. The town of Trinidad, located in the midst of the island, has culture and curios in spadefuls, being known as perhaps the most stunning town in Cuba. Drink in its pastel-hued terraces, flanked by luscious mountains and drooping palms, while getting to grips with everything that this UNESCO world heritage city has to offer (not least the smell of freshly cooking food which wafts throughout this vibrant settlement).

A TASTE OF OLD WORLD LUXURY

cuba tours from usa

The Bay of Pigs may be best known for a failed American military invasion that took place in 1961, but is today an unmissable component in any of our luxury vacations to Cuba. Not only can you learn about this truly tense period of 20th century history, but you can also take in the breathtaking views of the bay – a regular haunt for frolicking dolphins. It’s also one of the best places on the island to snorkel, before kicking back at La Cueva, a private restaurant famed across the country for its mouth-watering food and excellent wine.

Listen to the sound of jazz as it ricochets off the colorful walls.

Stylish and chic, Havana is one of the most fascinating cultural hubs in this part of the world. Curious minds will fall in love with the historic plazas, laidback eateries and art deco architecture. Our expert guides will truly immerse you into a Cuban lifestyle as you ride in an antique Cadillac, get a private lesson on cigar making and dance the night away in a private salsa lesson.

Discover carpets of rainforest and intrigue on this island.

Holding the title of the most beautiful town in Cuba, the pastel-hued, colonial town of Trinidad is found in the province of Santi Spíritus. Surrounded by luscious mountains and towering palms, Trinidad has a lot to offer; from the entrancing smell of freshly cooked meals to the quaint cobbled streets that line the town. We’ll take you on a history tour of the sugar plantations or on a snorkelling excursion in La Boca. Doesn’t it sound perfect?

Experience a slow and relaxed way of life in Cuba’s scenic backyard.

Once you spy a cigar-chewing guajiro ploughing through a rust-coloured tobacco field, you’ll know you’ve reached the tranquil farming town of Viñales. This traditional settlement is the perfect location to embrace Cuba’s calming countryside lifestyle. Dive into Cuba’s natural world by horse-riding through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valle de Viñales or trekking to Los Aquaticos – the Water People – to learn about the magical waters.

Trinidad: an elegant old town in southern Cuba

Trinidad attracts plenty of tourists despite being far from Havana

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Trinidad: famed for its cobbled streets and

Set in the foothills of the Escambray Mountains, close to Cuba's southern shore, Trinidad is one of the island's most perfectly preserved towns, says Claire Boobbyer in The Times .

It is a full four hours' drive from the capital, Havana, on the north coast, but still attracts plenty of tourists. They're drawn partly by the town itself, with its cobbled streets, old churches, and "sherbet" mansions with red-tiled roofs and wrought-iron balconies. But they also come for its densely forested, mountainous surroundings. There are some wonderful b&bs in town, and last year a new resort, the Meliá Trinidad Península , opened beside a beach just 15 minutes away. It is the first five-star hotel on Cuba's south coast. Founded by the Spanish in 1514, Trinidad grew rich from sugar production between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries. Some of the sugar barons' mansions are now open to visitors, including the Palacio Brunet, which houses the Museo Romántico, a magnificent collection of furniture from the colonial era.

Roughly 15,000 slaves were brought here from Africa to work on the plantations, the remains of which you can visit in the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, where there is still one functioning refinery. The melding of African and Spanish cultures has left a "rich" heritage of music, craft and folk art in Trinidad, which has been named a Unesco Creative City owing to its "distinctive" workshops, music venues and galleries.

The Península hotel is a self-contained world of luxury restaurants and swimming pools, but also offers some cultural engagement in the form of history talks, dance classes, cigar-rolling workshops, and so on. And there are plenty of other interesting places to visit along the coast to the west, including the elegant city of Cienfuegos (founded by French immigrants in 1819), and the Bahía de los Cochinos – or Bay of Pigs. Famed as the site of a thwarted invasion by CIA-backed, anti-Castro Cuban rebels in 1961, this beautiful spot is also the best place for bird-watching on the island.

However, the cost to travel internationally can sometimes be prohibitive. Because of this, GOBankingRates contacted several travel experts to recommend the most affordable countries for Americans to visit right now -- like these seven.

<ul> <li><strong>Cost-of-living index:</strong> 36.39</li> <li><strong>Purchasing power index:</strong> 29.56</li> <li><strong>Grocery cost index:</strong> 28.39</li> <li><strong>Healthcare quality index:</strong> 53.05</li> <li><strong>Safety index:</strong> 60.48</li> <li><strong>Peacefulness index rank:</strong> 51</li> <li><strong>Average annual temperature:</strong> 59.0</li> </ul>

Charles Neville, with JayWay Travel , a specialist European custom tour provider, recommends Albania for food lovers.

He says, "Expect exceptional local produce and abundant fresh fish and seafood from the Adriatic and Ionian seas, combined with hearty traditional meat dishes, and more-than-decent local wine. Hotels work out to less than half what you'd pay for an equivalent property in western Europe."

Alex Gillard, the founder of Nomad Nature Travel , also raves about Albania, calling it "a great, relatively undiscovered country to visit as an American tourist."

He adds, "Depending on the season, you can get a 500 to 600 dollar round-trip flight. I've spent months in Albania and it is very safe, the food is an affordable and incredible mix of Greek, Italian and local fare, and you can rent a car and get around their beautiful country for very cheap."

Andy Turlington, owner and travel advisor at Wildest Dreams Bookings in North Carolina, recommends Cuba, which is a short flight from Florida -- only about 100 miles from Key West.

"Cuba [has] interesting architecture, and the cars are a step back in time. Hotels in Havana start at about 50 U.S. dollars per night, but they have an Airbnb equivalent called 'Casa Particulars,' and many of them can be had for roughly 30 U.S. dollars per night."

<p>"Cuenca, Ecuador is a great, affordable, and interesting place to live, especially if you want to practice Spanish," said <a href="http://intentionaltravelers.com" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michelle Chang</a>, an entrepreneur and travel blogger. "It's also not so exciting as to be distracting from getting work done."</p> <p>Living on a shoestring budget is easy in Cuenca. </p> <p>"Ecuador uses the US dollar, but the cost of living is less than half and so far, their inflation rate has remained below ours," Chang said.</p>

This South American country is also extremely affordable. Turlington says, "You can easily get by in this country on about 30 to 50 U.S. dollars a day."

He especially recommends the capital city of Quito, where meals can usually be had for less than five U.S. dollars. Additionally, a taxi will cost about two dollars "to pretty much anywhere," and the bus costs about 35 cents. "Hotels can easily be had for less than 35 U.S. dollars a night, and for the ultra-cheap, they have plenty of hostels as well for about 10 U.S. dollars."

<p>A country that's super affordable for an American tourist is Panama, according to Becca Siegel and Dan Gold, owners of the travel blog <a href="https://www.halfhalftravel.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener">HalfHalfTravel.com</a>. "The reason is that flights are often cheap from major hubs, especially if you can fly to Miami first, or through Miami with a short layover."</p> <p>Once you land in Panama, they say that food, tours and accommodation are extremely affordable. "In Panama City alone, you can go walking in Casco Viejo, see the Panama Canal, excellent museums and experience great nightlife and culture."</p> <p>An extra bonus is that Panama uses the U.S. Dollar, so you won't have to do any currency exchanges, which they say is "super convenient for lots of American visitors."</p>

<p>South Africa isn’t often mentioned as one of the most tax-unfriendly nations in the world, but perhaps it’s being overlooked. Located at the very bottom of Africa’s continent, this country known for its safaris, minerals and beautiful landscapes taxes its citizens 45% on the high end, with corporations paying a flat 28% tax, regardless of industry. Overall, taxes contribute 27% to South Africa’s GDP. </p>

South Africa

Todd Sarouhan, owner of Go Visit San Diego and Go Visit Costa Rica, recommends Cape Town, South Africa for an affordable travel experience.

He says, "The most affordable countries are the ones where the exchange rate is in favor of the US Dollar. Cape Town is no stranger to being voted the best city in the world, the last time and for the seventh time running in 2019. Cape Town is a coastal gem, lying in the shadow of a cloud-hugged mountain where wine flows, penguins waddle and there's always something to do."

<p>While everyone has fantasies about retiring at age 40 or 50, the reality is that few people can afford this luxury, thanks in part to longer life expectancies. No matter how large your nest egg might be — or how frugal your lifestyle — retiring too early can ruin your well-laid financial plans and affect your quality of life down the line.</p>

Turkey is a great option for tourists wanting to go to Europe, Turlington says. "The lira has been greatly depreciated over the last 2 years or so, making Turkey a bargain hunter's paradise."

Istanbul offers some incredible cuisine, and plenty of historical locations and different architecture and religious sites. Istanbul has copious amounts of good hotels in the 50 US Dollar range as well. Armenia and Georgia are also lower cost options in this area of Europe.

We may have made a bit of a faux pas when booking our Disney holiday for July 2024.

He has applied for a VISA but on going to the US Embassy website now, the next VISA interviews available are in London in August and none at all available in Belfast.

Any advice hugely appreciated on any ways to try and expedite an interview? Even if its simply to confirm the Embassy makes no exceptions - basically along the lines of ‘you dont book travel until you get your visa’… He is going to try and call them to explain…

Our issue was we didnt know he couldnt travel on an esta until after we placed the Disney booking. We had no idea about the Cuba issue.

Lastly, how good are Disney about refunding for 1 person dropping out the booking? It was flights , hotel and tickets package all fully paid up?

I would try to get Disney to refund one person.

How long ago did you book?

' class=

Unfortunately they won’t expedite a visa application without good reason. Tourism or been unaware of entry requirements isn’t a good reason. I’d say calling them would be a waste of time but stranger things have happened I guess, maybe there will be a cancellation or something.

An indication, if ever there was one, as to why we all should get our immigration paperwork in order before we part with any non-refundable money on the trip itself.

Have you got your esta’s as it says on the website about cuba?

It was when we were going for ESTA that the issue came about.

We weren't too concerned - just thought we'd get a visa sorted - but we had no idea the wait time would be 150 days for a visa interview.

I'm not hopeful this can be resolved. Embassy info does not paint a positive picture. Every day is a school day I guess.

Others have said to check at midnight etc for cancellations or Belfast appointment, to be honest i dont think he will be going in july. Just keep checking randon times, middle of the night etc. good luck

I think Disney will work with you on the things in their control, it’s the flights that I think are in question. What airline are you flying? There are still some that will let you bank the money for future travel when you cancel. I don’t know mechanically how that works since Disney booked the flights though. I’ve never had a problem doing it on certain airlines when I booked direct.

Hi - Virgin Atlantic -

I've checked Disney T&C's and looks like all I will get back (probably) is the dining plan cost.

We're working on it and will know for sure the embassy advice this week hopefully.

Fingers crossed you can get things sorted McH 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Thanks Mike
