The Best Places to Stay in Singapore for Downtown Buzz

In Singapore, the Garden City, modern architecture is in harmony with nature

The bustling city of Singapore offers a plethora of enticing activities, delicious eateries and iconic landmarks, from the Merlion Park to the city’s famous botanical gardens. Singapore has no shortage of high-quality hotels, no matter what your budget, and if you’re looking to splash out, there are some brilliant luxury options to choose from. Read on for our guide to the best hotels in the centre of Singapore.

1. the warehouse hotel.

A modern and light bedroom at The Warehouse Hotel with a grey wall and illuminated headboard behind a bed

Situated on the riverbank near the Pulau Saigon Bridge, this storied property was built at the close of the 19th century, when the surrounding neighbourhood was sunk in opium-dealing and espionage. Rooms and suites stylishly retain the original warehouse feel, with high ceilings, black metal beams and staircases and walls of exposed brick and industrial grey, and almost all have unbroken views of Singapore River. Sample cutting-edge Singaporean dishes at smart in-house restaurant Po, and craft cocktails at the Lobby Bar, each of which is designed to honour a specific phase of the property’s past.

2. The Vagabond Club

Boutique Hotel, Hotel

A light bedroom with a cushioned bed, wooden headboard, frames pictures, cream walls, desk and chair at The Vagabond Club

Marriott’s louche, luxurious Vagabond Club offers Parisian-style accommodation in the trendy Jalan Besar neighbourhood. Designed by Jacques Garcia, known for his elegant restaurant and hotel interiors in the French capital, its rooms and suites wear dark, rich fabrics and are decorated by carefully-chosen photos and original artwork – but that’s not really what you stay at the Vagabond for. The big deal here is the Whiskey Library, a gentleman’s club-style bar that serves 1,000 varieties of rare and vintage whiskey. Before trying to work your way through them, feast on Chinese classics at the hotel’s Yellow Pot restaurant.

3. Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong

Boutique Hotel

An outside view of the green and white Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong beside a road and tree

Located in Katong, Singapore’s first Heritage Town, the Indigo takes inspiration from the local Peranakan culture. Nowhere is this more evident than in the guest rooms, each of which delicately replicates, in miniature, a typical Peranakan home in its proportions and furnishings. Look out over Katong from your very own bathtub, or from the glorious infinity pool on the roof, which seems to flow directly over the building’s edge. In-house eatery Baba Chews does Singaporean, Katong and Western dishes and the colourful pavilion has board games and Mac desktops for guest use.

5. Quincy Hotel

Hotel, Boutique Hotel, Chain Hotel, Spa Hotel

A sheltered outdoor pool at Quincy Hotel

Located a 10-minute walk from the Orchard Street shopping and entertainment centre, the Quincy provides one of central Singapore’s best-value stays. Your nightly room price isn’t just for a bed in either a Studio or slightly bigger Studio Deluxe (both have queen beds, big TVs and Kevin Murphy bathroom goodies), it also includes breakfast, the contents of your minibar, snacks and refreshments throughout the day and evening drinks and canapés in the lounge or alfresco area. You’ll also have access to a rooftop infinity pool, a sauna and a small but well-equipped gym.

6. Amoy Hotel

A stylish lobby at Amoy Hotel, with brown stylish seats, a water fountain and reception desk

Housed in a characterful old pagoda in downtown Singapore, the Amoy Hotel has become known for its highly personalised level of service. Staff will address you by name throughout your stay and have been known to investigate noise disturbances coming from nearby buildings in the middle of the night, and to provide birthday cakes and other thoughtful touches. Compact rooms come in just two sizes – single and deluxe – and feature Chinese heritage designs, luxurious linens and smartphones for roaming. The complimentary breakfast is courtesy of a nearby cafe, of which there are plenty.

7. Villa Samadhi

Boutique Hotel, Hotel, Luxury

A light bedroom with a chandelier, cushioned bed, dark wooden wardrobe and window at Villa Samadhi

The ultimate couples’ retreat, Villa Samadhi is housed in a lovingly-restored 1920s British army barracks in the tranquil Labrador Nature Reserve, a 25-minute drive from central Singapore. Rooms and shared areas display an old-world, colonial style, with lots of darks woods, heavy wooden furniture and a veranda that simply screams for linen suits; soak it all up over afternoon tea or during cocktail hour from 6pm to 7pm in the library, both of which are included in the nightly room price. A decent buffet breakfast and a nightcap of Port and choccies are also given at no extra cost.

8. Marina Bay Sands Hotel

The first luxury boutique hotel in Singapore, this exuberant and uninhibited establishment is made up 80 chicly designed rooms and suites. In keeping with the name of the hotel, a vibrant yet mysterious color palette of deep reds, metallic golds and ebony hues is adopted, evoking a somewhat provocative decor, an alternative to the usual neutral interiors of other hotels. Overlooking the upbeat alleys of Chinatown , wake up to a pleasing view of an entirely different culture. The Scarlet Hotel is a vivacious home away from home.

14. Naumi Hotel

A modern bedroom at Naumi Hotel, with a white cushioned bed, a TV, bedside tables and armchair

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

The best 10 Singapore hotels and the most tourist-friendly neighborhoods to stay in, according to a local

  • Accommodations in Singapore include everything from budget-friendly hostels to upscale resorts.
  • Here are a local's 10 favorite hotels and places to stay in Singapore for every kind of visitor.
  • Visit Insider's hub for travel guides, tips, and recommendations .

Insider Today

For a small island, Singapore has an impressive number of hotels. It's also one of the world's most expensive cities , where accommodations can easily cost thousands of dollars a night.

As a local, I've given friends and visitors countless hotel recommendations over the years that range from budget-friendly to all-out luxury. Before deciding where to stay in Singapore, I recommend setting a budget and picking a neighborhood where you want to be based.

If you want malls, shopping, and don't mind glitzy skyscrapers and crowds, the Orchard neighborhood is for you; whereas if you prefer stand-alone indie boutique shops and a more chilled-out vibe, you're better off staying around the Bugis area. If you're someone who loves the sun, sand, and sea and wants to be away — but not too far away — from the mainland, pick Sentosa for its endless attractions and cool beach clubs. Those looking for a "self-contained" district where there's a little bit of everything, from hip cafés serving all types of cuisine to quaint stores selling handcrafted, locally made goods, choose the Katong/Joo Chiat area.

Narrowing down this list was tough, but here are my 10 favorite places to stay for every type of budget.

Hotel Indigo

culture trip singapore hotels

If you want to base yourself in the east side of Singapore (there's a local saying that goes "East side, best side," so good on you), look no further than Hotel Indigo . This boutique hotel is in Katong and pays homage to Peranakan culture of Straits-born people of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage.

Rooms are vibrant and warm with touches of wood and intricate patterns, and the in-house Peranakan restaurant, Baba Chews, serves dishes like chili crab cakes and spare ribs marinated in kopi, a local coffee. My favorite thing about the hotel is the rooftop infinity pool, a place for relaxing and overlooking heritage buildings and bustling shops.

Rucksack Inn

If you're on a tight budget when visiting Singapore, there's a large concentration of hostels in districts like Little India, Lavender/Jalan Besar, and Chinatown, and they're all generally very clean and well-maintained.

Of the many hostels available, I recommend checking out Rucksack Inn . You'd be hard-pressed to find more affordable rooms in Singapore: For a room with four to six beds, you can expect to pay SG$30 to $35, and private rooms that house three to six people range from SG$120 to $160. The Tyrwhitt Road location provides hair dryers and is newly renovated, so I'd probably choose to stay there.

The Great Madras

culture trip singapore hotels

The Great Madras is a mid-range, aesthetic-forward hotel in Little India. It gives some serious Wes Anderson vibes with its quirky interiors and bold pops of color. Everything here is Instagram-worthy, from the bistro, which serves Halal food, to the pool.

There are 35 rooms, with all-female and coed hostels on the ground floor, and private hotel rooms on the second. Spaces run a little small — the Great Suite, which comes with a bathtub, is only 20 square meters. I recommend requesting the Courtyard Room for both a balcony and courtyard if you want more fresh air.

culture trip singapore hotels

Over in Robertson Quay, a little enclave along the Singapore River that's chock-full of bars and eateries, look into M Social . It's a contemporary, modern, young stay with loft-style rooms, and there's a pool and in-house restaurant, Beast & Butterflies — which serves a delicious pork-knuckle dish.

Philippe Starck, a French architect and designer, did the interiors, where things get techy: Think mini robots making your eggs at breakfast and performing room-service duties.

Lloyd's Inn

culture trip singapore hotels

Those who want their hotel stay to be an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city should go for Lloyd's Inn . The minimalist boutique hotel is just off Orchard Road, so you can get some peace and quiet without sacrificing the conveniences of a prime district.

Lush greenery surrounds the property and the rooms get a lot of natural light. The outdoor pool is reminiscent of Bali (an Indonesian province), and is next to a rooftop terrace. There's a vending machine on-site, but if you want proper hot food you'll have to walk five minutes or less to the main Orchard/River Valley area.

MET A Space Pod

If privacy is your priority, there's MET A Space Pod on Arab Street, which brought the Japanese concept of capsule-style rooms to Singapore in 2017. As a capsule — or pod — hotel, MET A Space features small "rooms" which are arranged in rows of tiny spaces stacked on top of each other — think bunk beds but cocooned.

Each room is designed to look like the inside of a spaceship, creating a simple place for you to get some shut-eye. There's free high-speed WiFi, and each capsule comes with controls for air-conditioning and lights, has USB-charging ports and foldable tables, and most have a TV.

The Vagabond Club

culture trip singapore hotels

Singapore's large variety of luxury hotels will spoil bigger spenders, but to steer clear of boring, try The Vagabond Club in Little India. When I first stepped into the lobby, I was in awe. Few colors exude royalty and opulence like red and gold put together, but throw in life-size animal sculptures (including a rhino) and six floor-to-ceiling brass banyan trees in a Parisian-style salon, and it's a whole new level of glamor.

Rooms have a sultry French look and feel, with floral details on the wall and framed pictures of everything from majestic landscapes to portraits of people (all from Satinder Garcha's, the hotel owner's, travels). The one unmissable highlight is the whiskey bar that houses a collection of 1,000 bottles of the spirit and hosts specially curated jazz nights, musical showcases, intimate theater sessions, and more.

The Capitol Kempinski Hotel

culture trip singapore hotels

Speaking of theater, there's a hotel in Singapore that actually houses one. Set in an eclectic neoclassical building in Singapore's civic-and-cultural district, the Capitol Kempinski Hotel is as grand as it gets. Guest rooms are classy, following the building's colonial art-deco and Victorian aesthetics, and the property also features an outdoor saltwater-relaxation pool.

There's a signature restaurant that Alvin Leung, a British-born Michelin-starred chef and television personality, heads. The hotel also hosts the Capitol Theater, a historic cinema that citizens regarded as one of Singapore's finest theaters in the 1930s. Today, it's an event space for performances, concerts, and movie screenings.

Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa

culture trip singapore hotels

If you're traveling with little ones in tow, you can't go wrong with Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa . Situated on the island of Sentosa — a local resort island with many entertainment options and world-class attractions — is filled with kid-friendly amenities and facilities.

With race-car simulators, art-activity rooms, waterslides, and an outdoor playground featuring 17 play sections, it'll be hard for children to pick even one thing to do. Rooms also have kid-friendly touches such as kids' toiletries, bath toys, beach toys, coloring supplies, and more.

Raffles Hotel

culture trip singapore hotels

I think it's impossible to write about Singapore accommodations without mentioning Raffles Hotel . Undoubtedly the most famous hotel in the country, it's named after Singapore's founder, Sir Stamford Raffles, and many big names have spent nights here, from Queen Elizabeth II to Charlie Chaplin.

Showcasing neo-Renaissance architecture, Raffles Hotel is a sight to behold — even visitors who aren't staying in the hotel should drop by to check it out for its history and aesthetics. Swing by the hotel's Long Bar to sample the Singapore Sling , right where a bartender named Ngiam Tong Boon invented it in 1915.

And did we mention that Fullerton Bay has the best pillow menu ever, with eclectic choices such as buckwheat pillows and jade-lined ones? The hotel is mere minutes from major attractions like the Merlion and the Esplanade, but set aside quality time to laze by the pool and soak up the nightscape.

Artefacts line the display shelves at the impressive lobby, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to views of shophouses and skyscrapers. The rooms, on the other hand, come designed with sleek lines and modern furnishings; bay windows and workstations look out to scenes of the buzzing city, while modern gizmos of smart TVs and portable ultraviolet disinfecting boxes add convenience – and peace of mind, even post-COVID.

If you'd rather me-time in the plush comfort of your room, you'll find it equipped with an exercise mat and foam rollers, plus the generously sized bathtub even comes with a book-and-wine-glass tray. Sweet.

The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore

9.  The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore

Best for: An artsy retreat in the Civic District

The new Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore takes over two iconic buildings: the neoclassical-style Capitol Building (1930) and Venetian Renaissance-style Stamford House (1904). Located in the civic and cultural district, the hotel is the perfect base for exploring the museums in downtown Singapore. The luxurious rooms boast high corniced ceilings with dramatic archways and grand windows that overlook the bustling street. 15 Stamford by celebrity chef Alvin Leung at the lobby level of the hotel is decked in intricate metalwork, burnished mirrors, and glamorous details that reference the Art Deco and Victorian-style architecture of The Capitol. Savour Chef Leung's humble tribute to Asian cuisine showcases a hybrid of several recipes from around Asia, paying tribute to cuisines from Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Dao by Dorsett AMTD Singapore (formerly Oakwood Premier)

10.  Dao by Dorsett AMTD Singapore (formerly Oakwood Premier)

Best for: A plush retreat in the CBD  Who says central business district (CBD) hotels are boring? Dao by Dorsett AMTD Singapore boasts proximity to some of the best cycling trails in the city. Get on your two-wheeler and head to Marina Bay, Gardens by The Bay or East Coast Park if you're feeling adventurous. Then, head back and take a dip in the property's outdoor pool, order cocktails served to your room or soak up the sun on the terrace.

The St. Regis Singapore

11.  The St. Regis Singapore

Best for: Getting royally pampered

The ritzy chandelier, expansive marble, and Victorian brocades will have you imagining you've waltzed into a royal palace, and indeed, the hotel has been home to visiting royalty including Prince Charles. The opulence also sets the stage for a truly one-of-a-kind luxurious stay, because at St Regis, every guest is accorded 24-hour access to a personal butler. The perks span from notable ones, such as garment pressing and hot beverages, to the downright lavish, like having a sumptuous bubble bath drawn for you. Then there’s Remède Spa’s therapeutic Wet Lounge that’s open to all hotel guests. Breakfast is also worth waking up for – if only for the glorious truffle flan and the Avruga caviar-topped Boston lobster omelette.

Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, an IHG Hotel

12.  Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, an IHG Hotel

  • Marine Parade

Best for: Discovering the heart of Peranakan culture

Katong is Singapore's Peranakan enclave, picturesque with colourful shophouses and quaint with old-school eateries. Fittingly, Hotel Indigo makes an earnest yet quirky modern tribute to the locale's heritage. The minibar’s an ornate cabinet, the coffee table doubles up as carrom board and there’s an enamel washbasin for you to have a foot soak in just like the matriarchs of old. And for a boutique-style hotel with a tiny footprint, it's managed to squeeze into the premises a rooftop lap pool, a 24-hour gym, a lobby lounge/business centre stocked with local books, and an in-house restaurant that stays faithful to Nyonya flavours.

Lloyd's Inn

13.  Lloyd's Inn

  • River Valley

Best for: Living out your Kinfolk dreams

Stepping into Lloyd's Inn is akin to entering the artfully curated pages of Kinfolk magazine. The palette is minimalist – blond wood on pristine white, set off by black frames – and the rooms are bathed in an abundance of ethereal light. Facilities are sparse, but there are numerous pockets of space for guests to rest and recharge: a dipping pool framed by lush greenery (the hotel even provides kaftans and yukatas for lounging around in), a roof terrace for BYOB sundowners, plus most its rooms offer a mix of outdoor showers and baths. It's almost hard to believe that this oasis is a mere hop and skip away from the Orchard Road shopping belt.

Oasia Hotel Downtown, Singapore by Far East Hospitality

14.  Oasia Hotel Downtown, Singapore by Far East Hospitality

Best for: Garden city adventures

Ever wanted to live in a plush apartment right in the heart of the city? At Oasia Hotel Downtown, you can – even if only for a few days. The hotel towers over Tanjong Pagar MRT station, with hi-fi city views and buzzy F&B options within its furry green shell. WOHA, the architecture firm behind Oasia, has broken down the walls on all four sides of the lobby (and the 21st floor) – the resulting natural draft evokes a vibe reminiscence of a Bali villa retreat, albeit in a high-rise. Air-conditioning, what? The Skyline Pavilion – it’s only accessible to Club room guests – is our fave spot in the hotel. There, an infinity lap pool offers views of the CBD and Chinatown. On the rooftop, two mirrored pools crown the hotel with swing chairs and pale blue chaises.

Marina Bay Sands

15.  Marina Bay Sands

  • Things to do

Best for: The ultimate pool selfie

Snagging a pool selfie at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) is to reach the pinnacle of your selfie game – literally, because the pool deck, perched at 57 stories and spanning the length of three Olympic-sized pools, is the highest and largest rooftop pool in the world. Then there's the daredevil allure of the infinity pool's "vanishing edge" and the skyline below. You just gotta be creative at cropping because this is a 2,600-room hotel so the pool's bound to be packed.

The Warehouse Hotel

16.  The Warehouse Hotel

Best for: Soho-living by the river

What was once a godown along the Straits of Malacca trade route is now one of the swankiest hotels to open in Singapore. The Warehouse Hotel, with its industrial-luxe design aesthetics, play up the building's history. Think exposed walls, leather couches, and the cavernous pitched lobby – a mixture of wheels, pulleys and naked bulbs as the light centrepiece. That local yet modern emphasis continues throughout the hotel, from its in-house restaurant Po, which spins a gourmet take on hawker favourites, to the way Warehouse puts the spotlight on Singapore artisans through its in-room amenities, such as ceramic ware by Mud Rock and teas by Amuse Project. The lobby bar is also a worthy visit for its stellar, Asian-inspired cocktails – after all, the hotel is managed by the Lo & Behold Group which owns some of the trendiest restaurants and bars in town.

W Singapore - Sentosa Cove

17.  W Singapore - Sentosa Cove

Best for: Party beats like no other

The W Singapore is a sexy hotel. Beats thump through the lobby, beautiful people parade around the pool and red Prada leather adorns the lift walls. A staycation here is like peeping into the lifestyles of Sentosa Cove’s rich and famous – so don’t forget your polo tee and bug-eyed sunnies. Whatever you want, whenever you want it, the hotel is happy to provide it. Even if it’s a tray of desserts served on a golden skateboard upon check-in. But the pool is where it's at: open 24/7, it pulses with life in the day and transforms into a private, sensuous and oh-so-inviting space at night.

Labrador Villa (formerly Villa Samadhi)

18.  Labrador Villa (formerly Villa Samadhi)

  • Harbourfront

Best for: A quiet retreat from urban life

This 20-room boutique hotel in a little forest clearing within Labrador Park is easy to fall in love with. The black-and-white villa dates back to the colonial era yet offers all the trappings of modern life tastefully clad in antique or upcycled furnishing that exudes old-world grandeur. But more than its romantic charm, what won our hearts was the hospitality. A wooden boardwalk leads into the villa from the car park and sets the mood for an idyllic retreat in nature. You're welcomed with an afternoon tea set in beautiful porcelain ware and if you're staying in a Sarang or Luxe Sarang room, your private hot tub will have been prepared for your check-in. There's cocktail hour for all guests and turndown service comes with a gorgeous crystal decanter of port and more snacks.

Our go-to guide to hotels in Singapore

Six hotels for everyone from golf lovers to spa seekers..

Annette Tan

Singapore may be a famously small island, but it packs in an incredible variety of places to stay and enclaves to explore. I’ve lived here all my life, yet this city still manages to surprise me with its layers of culture, heritage, and entertainment, and easy access to it all thanks to the efficient public transportation system.

Because getting around is a breeze, I always recommend visitors choose two or three hotels throughout their stay to take advantage of everything each neighborhood has to offer. Here, some of my favorites, all of which know how to turn up the hospitality while still being close to the city’s attractions, heritage neighborhoods, and, of course, the amazing food scene that Singapore is known for.

For design buffs: The Singapore Edition

Lobby of the Singapore Edition surrounded by lush greenery, where the atmosphere is unique, enchanting and original

It can be hard to stand out in a city with more than 70,000 hotel rooms, yet here’s an Ian Schrager hotel making its mark in 50 shades of cream. Located off the west end of Orchard Road, The Edition Singapore’s voluminous, greenery-filled lobby curves into a series of calming nooks, mirroring the garden city outside.

Room scene: The light-filled rooms and serene palette speak to my minimalist soul. “Light-filled” in this tropical climate, however, means you also need stellar in-room climate control. Happily, layers of curtain sheers and black-out shades keep the heat at bay, while exterior louvers adjust electronically to filter sunlight (and prying eyes).

Restaurant report: FYSH —Australian chef Josh Niland’s only outpost outside Sydney—highlights inventive ways to cook the whole fish (ice cream made from fish eyes, anyone?). But trust me, the food sounds wilder than it tastes. To wit: The tuna cheeseburger tastes like any well-made cheeseburger even if its patty is made from the ribeye, head, and organs of the fish.

Don’t miss: The splashy Lobby Bar with its floor-to-ceiling wall of bottles bathed in a pink glow and an irresistible hot pink velvet-lined billiard table carved from Calcutta marble.

Who should go: Travelers who love quiet design.

For eco-warriors: ParkRoyal Collection Pickering

Urban deluxe room with a wood-toned, Nordic-inspired style

Consider ParkRoyal Collection Pickering the blueprint for a hotel whose top priority is the planet. This five-star “hotel in a garden” surrounds guests with 160,000 square feet of vertical gardens, soaring green atriums, and a rooftop farm smack in the heart of the Central Business District . Sustainability practices are the norm here—think rain harvesting, energy saving, solar power, and more.

Room scene: Each space is appointed in wood-toned, Nordic-inspired style with ultra-comfy king-sized beds. Of course, the rooms’ amenities such as Appelles hand lotion and shampoo are decanted into pump bottles made from biodegradable and paraben-free materials. A filtered water dispenser in every room helps save an estimated 230,000 plastic bottles a year.

Restaurant report: Lime Restaurant & Bar is a favorite among Singaporeans for its lavish themed buffets. You might walk into a spread of hawker favorites one day and lobster everything the next. Whatever it is, you won’t leave hungry.

Don’t miss: The Wellness Floor, where the gym, infinity pool, and spa are sprawled across a lush open space. Snag one of the colorful birdcage cabanas by the pool and take in the gorgeous views of the skyline with a cocktail in hand.

Who should go: Wellness seekers and the sustainably minded.

For luxury lovers: Capella Singapore

Contemporary styled sea view room

Capella Singapore is a resort lover’s dream, secreted away amongst 30 acres of forest on Sentosa Island, a mere 15-minute drive from the city center. Anchored by a long, whitewashed colonial building, its 112 rooms and suites are housed in an undulating, infinity-shaped extension designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Room scene: The style here is best described as modern-colonial, with tropical touches like jungle print paintings and rattan furniture. I love the enormous super king beds swathed in sumptuous Frette linens, the generous selection of Aesop toiletries, and the complimentary mini-bar. There are six room categories, but if you’re looking to splurge, go all in on a one- or two-bedroom villa with a roomy living space and a private plunge pool.

Restaurant report : Schedule a sundowner at Bob’s Bar to watch the sunset over the hotel’s three cascading swimming pools and the South China Sea beyond. Dinner at Italian restaurant Fiamma by chef Mauro Colegreco is a treat. When in doubt, order the crudo de gambero rosso (Mediterranean red prawn) with kumquat and the blue lobster tagliatelle. Alternatively, Cantonese restaurant Cassia is gorgeous and serves amazing dim sum.

Don’t miss: The rich collection of art. Wander around the property as you would a gallery to see paintings, sculptures, and ceramics by Singaporean and international artists.

Who should come here: Couples and those seeking an air of exclusivity.

For a golfing getaway: Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore

Masters golf course at Dusit Thani

This stunning urban resort sits on Singapore’s bucolic east coast, close to Changi Airport and Jewel (both can't-miss attractions). It’s in my hood, so I’m biased, but this is the most chill you’ll feel in this frenetic city. Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore ’s direct access to two championship golf courses—the Masters and the Classic—is the main draw for golfers. But even if you can’t tell a birdie from a bogey, there are plenty of distractions, including the sprawling Devarana Wellness Spa, three outdoor tennis courts, and three swimming pools.

Room scene: The spacious 198 rooms and suites are appointed in a contemporary Asian style with distinctive Thai accents. Some face the swimming pool and others come with verdant patios, but all come with a pillow menu and botanical amenities by Thai aromatherapy brand Nature Touch or L’Occitane.

Restaurant report: Greenhouse , the forest-themed all-day restaurant, is a foodie’s dream. Five show kitchens dish out an array of cuisines, from Indian and Thai classics to Mediterranean and Chinese. On balmy days, dine on Thai street food at the Tee Deck , which overlooks the picturesque Masters Course.

Don’t miss: The 90-minute signature massage at Devarana Wellness , which mixes Thai, Ayurvedic, and shiatsu techniques. This treatment is delivered with thoughtful attention to detail, including a choice of massage oils, aromatherapy, and chilled lemongrass tea before it begins.

Who should go: Golfers and families in need of a relaxing vacation.

For heritage hounds: The Warehouse Hotel

Lobby and bar area of The Warehouse Hotel appointed in a industrial chic design

This site has lived several lives, starting as a warehouse in 1895 before evolving into an opium den, an underground distillery, and, eventually, a popular discotheque in the ’80s. Today, The Warehouse Hotel’s décor might be industrial and modern, but its exposed original brick walls, the nearby Singapore River, and little touches like an “Objects of Vice” retail installation give it the flavor of old Singapore.

Room scene: Although most have double-height ceilings, peaked roofs, and the building’s original industrial details, no two rooms are exactly the same. Each is luxe and loungey in soothing shades of copper, slate, and forest green. Ask for a river-view room, where expansive windows look directly out to the Singapore River and flood the room with natural light.

Restaurant report: Po , on the ground floor, dishes out well-made heritage dishes created by celebrated Singaporean chef Willin Low. Definitely try the popiah, a spring roll dish that’s laborious to make and a joy to eat.

Don’t miss: The little luxuries that celebrate Singapore makers, including mugs by ceramic studio Mud Rock, local snacks in the minibar, and stylish pleated totes by designer label GINLEE.

Who should go: History buffs and style hunters.

For the budget-conscious: The Sultan Hotel

The well appointed Puteri Room with Indonesian crafted furniture and floor to ceiling French doors

There’s an old-world romance about Kampong Glam , Singapore’s former royal port town set aside for the Sultan of Johore and his 600 family members in 1824. Much of the old architecture remains intact, including the 10 conservation shophouses that make up The Sultan Hotel . Stepping into the property is like entering a slice of the enclave’s past, with its open-air corridors, original carvings, and the occasional calls to prayer from the iconic Sultan Mosque nearby.

Room scene: Sculpted arches, colonial shutters, and latticework screens add period charm to the 64 compact rooms. High ceilings and clever design provide the illusion of space.

Restaurant report: Gastro-bar Farrer Horse Dining Room & Stable Bar serves fun, creative renditions of easy eats like wagyu burgers, steak, and fish tacos. Order a quick bite and a cocktail but save stomach space for the wealth of fantastic Malay food just beyond the hotel’s doorstep.

Don’t miss: Breakfast or supper at Zam Zam Restaurant , Singapore’s oldest eatery located a three-minute walk from the hotel. Order the murtabak or biryani and wash it down with a foamy teh halia (pulled ginger tea). You won’t regret it.

Who should go: Wallet watchers and hungry travelers.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

A Guide to Singapore’s Cultural Attractions

Discover the real sights and flavours of singapore.

Here’s a rough guide to some of Singapore’s best cultural attractions. We show you some ideas and points of interest in the city where you can experience the ‘real Singapore’. This isn’t only through historical landmarks and temples around town, but also through the rich mix of heritage cuisines brought by many different Asian cultures known to make up Singapore’s vibrant scene.

Kick off your day with local kaya toast and half-boiled egg, a highlight at Killiney Kopi Tiam (67 Killiney Road) which retains much of the bustling charm of the coffee shops of yore. Then, take a taxi to Chinatown , where you should be able to practice your haggling skills at the many Peranakan-style shophouses on and around Pagoda Street. Nearby on South Bridge Road is the colourful Sri Mariamman Temple , the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore built in 1827.

Next, stop for a mid-morning Chinese tea session at the nearby Tea Chapter (9 Neil Road). This charming teahouse serves a variety of good-quality tea the traditional way – ask a waitress for a full demonstration on how to use the tiny teacups, teapot, fragrance cups and bamboo utensils. South-eastward along Cross Street and turning right at Telok Ayer Street, find the interesting Thian Hock Keng Temple , another of Singapore's oldest temples, established in 1839.

From the Chinese part of town, hail a cab and whizz off to Serangoon Road, the heart of Little India . Have lunch at the popular South Indian vegetarian restaurant Komala Vilas (76 Serangoon Road). Then, take in the variety of shops selling Indian spices and newspapers, as well as gold jewellery, Tamil CDs and software along Serangoon. The massive shopping complex Mustafa sells practically everything under the sun, including some speciality foodstuffs imported from India.

After this, it's time for some historical knowledge to back up all you've seen – a great spot for just that is the Singapore History Museum on Stamford Road. This museum traces the history of the island from the 14th century. You can also wander around the impressive ancestral hall and bridal chamber of a fully recreated Peranakan house, and enjoy a hi-tech 3-D show presenting the nation's past.

For a truly Singaporean food experience, head for Newton Circus Hawker Centre near the Newton MRT station. This sprawling food centre allows you to sample unique dishes such as Indian roti john sandwiches and murtabak stuffed pancakes, Hokkien popiah spring rolls, spicy sambal stingray, and Malay mee goreng fried noodles. The system is strictly self-service – pick a seat, walk around the stalls, order what you like, and quote your table number to the food seller.

While there are plenty of glitzy and modern places to hang out when evening falls in Singapore, you can opt for a classic Singapore nightlife scene along Mohamed Sultan Road . It is one of the hippest and happening streets in Singapore where some of the city’s liveliest nightspots used to thrive but have come and gone (there’s always something new!). Restored Chinese godowns here now house some cool speakeasies and upscale steakhouses. Have fun!

The Hottest New Hotel in Singapore Has Made a Cool Neighborhood Even Cooler

Buzz, quirk, murphy beds, tracey emin art, and the world’s most famous butcher: mondrian duxton singapore is the new it hotel in singapore..

The Hottest New Hotel in Singapore Has Made a Cool Neighborhood Even Cooler

Buzz, quirk, Murphy beds, Tracey Emin art, and the world’s most famous butcher: Mondrian Duxton Singapore is the new It hotel in Singapore. We checked in and found just one problem: deciding how to allocate our time between the creative spaces inside the fantastic new hotel, and all the F&B and boho coolness outside in Duxton Hill.

THE MONDRIAN DUXTON SINGAPORE, Mondrian’s first foray into Southeast Asia, fits right in with its neighbors in more ways than one. Though it’s newly built, DP Architects’ ultra-modern façade facing Neil Road mimics the proportions of the neighboring Straits shophouses, from the height of the building and the slant of roof to the curve of the windows. You almost have to look twice to notice that the glass and concrete are very 21st century.

Pinnacle Suite Living Area

Pinnacle Suite Living Area

Pinnacle Suite Bathroom

Pinnacle Suite Bathroom

The arched windows on the third floor conceal a series of stylish rooms by Robbyn Carter (whose Studio Carter worked on the interiors throughout the hotel) dubbed shophouse suites that all share high ceilings and street views. Mine had a spacious walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with an on-off opaque glass wall that lets in lots of daylight. But the main room has a couple of features that you might not notice until you decide to have some friends over. The desk and vanity table can be assembled to form a bigger table, or can be removed altogether. And if you need more room to kick your heels up, the Murphy bed folds right up into the wall. (If you don’t opt for one of the hard-to-book suites, there are all together a total of 302 cozier rooms, mostly in the unobtrusive 12-story tower set back from the street.)

Canyon Club Rooftop Pool at Mondrian Singapore

Given everything else it has going for it, suggesting that the Mondrian Duxton Singapore is a party hotel hardly does it justice. But expect some epic festivities at the rooftop Canyon Club where the vibe is more beach club than city bar. The infinity pool lined by oversized daybeds that can easily accommodate couples, threesomes or more is at its best as the sun goes down.

Down on the third floor that also houses the shophouse suites, Italian eatery Bottega di Carna, and a reception area, the Jungle Ballroom has a rare 2 a.m. license that automatically makes it a favorite with later-night revelers. But this is no rough and rowdy watering hole. The cocktail list under the excellent guidance of Adrian Besa, whom many will remember from his time at the Mandarin Oriental, highlights hard-to-find spirits from across Southeast Asia. How Doth the Crocodile takes its name from a poem in Alice in Wonderland and gives it a drinking-game twist: make an origami crocodile before the bartender serves your drink and you win an extra shot. My personal choice is Jaguar Juice, the savory love child of a bloody Mary and a martini, though the alcohol in this very spirit-forward glass is cognac and sherry. With a bar snack like the succulent spicy cumin lamb ribs, you’d pretty much have a meal.

Mondrian Singapore

If you don’t want to rely on booze for your five-a-day however, look no further than Bottega di Carna. This meat on the menu is curated by charismatic celebrity butcher Dario Cecchini whose philosophy of being a responsible carnivore finds its way onto both extremes of the menu.

Watch the video of our exclusive interview with the world’s most famous butcher, Dario Cecchini, here .

Linguine Spicy Lobster by Bottega di Carna

Witness the luscious bistecca alla fiorentina that will feed the whole table, and the francesina, a humble ragù of braised beef knee that your nonna would have made you, if your nonna were the Tuscan head of a family of eight generations of artisan butchers (as Cecchini is). Here it comes tossed with a plateful of house-made pappardelle. The rest of the menu is in the hands of the restaurant’s head chef, Singapore local italophone and italophile Kenny Huang and the hotel’s executive chef Alastair Clayton. Just one bite of the fried artichoke tart amuse-bouche will convince you that those are very good hands to be in.

On the ground floor, the American-made Slayer coffee machine in all-day Christina’s cranks out coffee that, well, slays. Over the next few months, Christina’s will be joined by a collection of high-profile outside restaurants including Noa (Spanish cuisine), Suzuki from chef Suzuki Yuishiro, and Latin-American Araya powered by a couple with Michelin pedigree.

Another ground-floor addition is a sculpture by a major international artist whose name is still under wraps. I guessed British-Indian (living) and French-American (deceased) but my poker-faced guide wasn’t giving anything away. Look out for an unveiling in the next couple of months, but you don’t need to wait that long to check out some museum-quality pieces, like Ian Davenport’s dripping Deep Magenta , Mirrored and the mesmerizing Waterfall IV by Singaporean artist Dawn Ng, a video of a multi-layered melting ice cube. A work by provocative Tracey Emin is being installed in Bottega di Carna this month.

The hotel prides itself on associating itself with colorful personalities like Emin and Cecchini. But it is equally proud of its staff, chosen for their varied backgrounds. Ann, a comfortably middle-aged server in Bottega, pauses when I ask her about why she chose to come to work at young, hip Mondrian. “I’m old,” she laughs. “I want to learn something new at my age!”

When you walk out the forecourt of the hotel you’re right in the heart of Duxton Hill. Yes, luxury bag brand Coach has opened its first ever café across the road. But you’ll also find an unassuming wine bar like Rebel Rebel , The Prefecture where the dapper Mr. Q. preaches bespoke men’s tailoring that is suited for the tropics and newcomers like the Cat Bite Club that is even newer than the brand-new Mondrian. Food options include everything from chef Zor Tan’s freshly-starred Born to the legendary Maxwell hawker center where you want to feast on the old, like the Fuzhou Oyster Cake served since the 1950s and Hok Lai Seng Teochew Fishball Bak Chor Mee (no social media) now served up by a Gen Z hawker and his girlfriend. Trendy and boho, slick with a dash of local color: Mondrian Duxton Singapore fits right into the neighborhood.

Jungle Ballroom Cocktail at Mondrian Singapore

Mondrian Duxton Singapore is located 20 minutes from Changi International Airport. The hotel is gradually opening all its rooms, with shophouse suites currently starting at SGD 1,422 per night.

5 Days in Singapore: A Blend of Culture, Cuisine, and Cutting-edge Attractions

Welcome to Singapore, a cosmopolitan city-state where East meets West and traditional meets modern. Our specially curated 5-day itinerary ensures you experience the diverse tapestry of cultures, tantalizing food, and avant-garde attractions that this lion city has to offer. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, let this guide introduce you to the wonders of Singapore.

The Merlion, the official mascot of Singapore

A Glimpse Into Singapore’s Rich Tapestry

Singapore’s history is as diverse as its culture. Once a sleepy fishing village, the island catapulted to prominence as a key trading post for the British Empire. Since its independence, Singapore has become a global financial center and a bustling hub for tourism, all the while preserving its rich heritage evident in its vibrant neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Little India.

The city’s cultural fabric is woven with threads from various ethnic communities, predominantly Chinese, Malay, and Indian, each contributing to the country’s unique identity. As you traverse through Singapore, the city’s language sings the song of its diversity, with English as the main medium, complemented by Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. It’s a place where futuristic skyscrapers stand alongside heritage buildings, telling tales of Singapore’s journey from past to present.

Before you embark on your exciting journey, a few preparations can ensure a seamless experience:
