You’ve heard the name, you’ve probably even heard a few songs—maybe “ Crash Into Me ” or “Satellite”—and you’ve seen the face on show posters, billboards, or your television screen. But who is Dave Matthews and who is his titular Dave Matthews Band ? Find out below.

When did the band begin?

While bartending in Charlottesville, Virginia, at Miller’s Bar, a young Dave Matthews, not then known as much of an artist and certainly not as a musician, began to take note of the local talent. With a bit of confidence and only a few songs he’d been writing in secret, Matthews in 1990 approached local standout drummer Carter Beauford about collaborating.

When Beauford agreed to jam, Matthews asked a few others if they would be interested, too, including psychedelic saxophonist LeRoi Moore and whirling dervish guitarist Rim Reynolds. Matthews also sought out high school bass player Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley, who wasn’t a full-time band member until 1992.

The band had its first shows in 1991 and released their first record, Remember Two Things , a live album in 1993.

What were the band’s early hits?

The band released its debut studio LP, Under the Table and Dreaming , in 1994. The album was rich with songs the group had perfected on the road over the first third of the 1990s. DMB lived much of the year out of a tour van, traveling to music venues, festivals, frat houses, and more, spreading its tunes with its charismatic singer and unique lineup that featured a violinist, saxophonist, and teenage bassist.

Songs on that debut studio LP include “What Would You Say,” “Satellite” and “Ants Marching.” But DMB wasn’t just a one-hit album wonder. Their follow-up, the 1996 studio LP, Crash , included some even bigger hits including “Crash Into Me,” “Two Step” and “Too Much.”

In 1997, the group won its sole Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for the single, “So Much to Say.”

Who is Dave Matthews?

Born on January 9, 1967, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dave Matthews has seen much of the world, from New York to Charlottesville to South Africa and beyond. He also experienced tragedy as a young person, losing his father to lung cancer when he was 10. Later, as the band was beginning to take off, Matthews lost his sister Anne, who was murdered by her husband in 1994.

Matthews officially started DMB in 1991 and since then it has become one of the biggest touring groups in the world, grossing some $1 billion since its inception. But Matthews has also released solo material, including his 2003 solo album, Some Devil , which garnered him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for the single, “Gravedigger.”

What is the essential content?

Today, the band has a great deal of popular songs. Going to see DMB in concert, fans are privy to extended songs, long jams, and improvisations. So, any live show you can see becomes its own beautiful living, breathing experience.

But along with its first few album releases, fans can try to find the more obscure Recently EP , which features an early recording of the band’s song, “Halloween.” The group’s 1998 studio LP, Before These Crowded Streets , includes hits like “The Stone,” “Crush,” “Pig” and “Spoon.”

Other fun albums include the nearly all-electric Everyday and the bootleg album known as The Lillywhite Sessions , which was later re-recorded and released as Busted Stuff , though many fans prefer the bootleg.

What is the band’s latest release?

Most recently, the band released its 10th studio album, the 2023 offering Walk Around the Moon , its first album since Come Tomorrow in 2018. It was the band’s first album not to include Boyd Tinsley, who was ousted from the group due to allegations of past misconduct. DMB also lost Moore, who died in 2008 during an ATV accident.

Final thoughts?

In the 1990s, as Seattle-born grunge music was taking over the world, on the East Coast there were acoustic-driven jam bands bringing positivity to light in an otherwise sludgy rock world. Dave Matthews and the Dave Matthews Band were big reasons why those songs took hold and led to other artists like Dispatch, Howie Day, and O.A.R. Today, DMB is remembered for its massive live tours, big audiences, and its lovable lead singer.

Dave Matthews Band’s Grown-Up View of Love and Dread

“Walk Around the Moon,” the group’s 10th album, faces troubles and searches for solace.

Seven men stand in a row against an industrial wall, all wearing dark-colored clothes and jackets.

By Jon Pareles

Dave Matthews Band albums seesaw between joy and angst. On the home front, with a partner and family, the songs find affection, pleasure and ease. Beyond it, the wider world holds strife and dread. And looking inward can be just as troubling.

“Walk Around the Moon,” the band’s 10th studio album, opens with its title song , swinging the beat and exulting in a relationship that has saved the grateful singer: “You gave me everything/Now I’m flying into this kaleidoscopic dream.” But that dream doesn’t last; up next is a song about school shootings. “Madman’s Eyes” is set to an ominous, Middle Eastern-tinged modal riff and buttressed by a moaning, swooping string orchestra, as Matthews howls, “Don’t sacrifice another child!”

More than most rock songwriters — especially in the jam-band realm where he has been barnstorming for three decades — Matthews, 56, leans into being a grown-up. He’s an unabashed dad-rocker, a proud parent who has long been thinking and worrying about the welfare of his children and of generations to come. In “Something to Tell My Baby,” a waltz backed by only his acoustic guitar and a few strings, Matthews muses on how fleeting life can be, crooning in his humblest falsetto and wondering what memories to leave behind “to make them smile/And maybe make things easier.”

“Walk Around the Moon” is the band’s first studio album since 2018, and the first since its longtime violinist, Boyd Tinsley, left the band and was sued for sexual harassment by a musician in a side project; the case was settled in 2019.

The band’s sound had already been changing and deepening. On its 1990s albums, Matthews’s guitar — often acoustic — was the band’s only chordal instrument, joined in light-fingered counterpoint by saxophone, violin, bass and drums for staccato grooves that blended folk, funk and jazz. Through the years, as its audiences grew to arena size, the band was bolstered with keyboards, electric guitar and horns, growing brawnier, weightier and brassier. (Rashawn Ross, a trumpeter who has toured with the band since 2006, now has a more prominent role.) But the band’s founding rhythm section — Carter Beauford on drums and Stefan Lessard on bass — still keeps the songs nimble, no matter how burdened Matthews’s thoughts can become.

“I’m down in this hole again,” he sings in “Looking for a Vein,” as he compares himself to a miner who works compulsively. “What if I strike it/rich as I want to be?” he muses over a loping, six-beat guitar lick. “Will it set me free/Or be just another hole to dig?” In “The Only Thing,” over a barreling electric guitar riff that hints at Led Zeppelin, Matthews is desperate to “Crawl out of this skin I’m living in/Crawl out of my mind into the outside.” And in “Monsters,” a reverberating ballad with a sputtering double time undercurrent, he’s trying to reassure a child — or possibly himself — that the “monsters in your head” aren’t real.

In these new songs, love, or even the possibility of love, solves a lot of problems: the fear in “Monsters,” the self-loathing in “The Only Thing.” Other songs — “After Everything” and “Break Free” — cautiously celebrate love going right, emotionally and carnally, with Matthews pledging devotion while full-tilt horn sections blare his delight.

But he’s well aware that love, in a happy domestic sphere, is just an individual refuge, not a global solution. “The world is going in all directions/Like bottles shattered on the floor,” he sings in the elegiac “All You Ever Wanted Was Tomorrow.” And he closes the album alone on acoustic guitar, with “Singing From the Windows.” The song imagines being within a siege, thinking about “when the war is over” while watching fires and hearing sirens.

“None of us know what’s to come tomorrow,” he sings. “So dance with me like the time we’ve got is borrowed.” Private comfort amid public catastrophe — it’s only a modest consolation, but that’s all there is.

Dave Matthews Band “Walk Around the Moon” (Bama Rags/RCA)

An earlier version of this article misstated information about a trumpeter who plays with Dave Matthews Band. Rashawn Ross did not replace Boyd Tinsley; he has toured with the band since 2006. An earlier version also misstated Dave Matthews’s age. He is 56, not 58.

dave matthews band tour wiki

Coinciding with the launch of their U.S. summer tour, Dave Matthews Band will release Walk Around The Moon – their 10 th studio on May 19. Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she aid, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
