Jungle Cruise
- Based on Disneyland's theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element.
- 1916. Dreaming about saving countless lives and having another adventure, the feisty English feminist and doctor of botany, Dr Lily Houghton, embarks on a peril-laden mission to change the world. Along with her fashionable brother, MacGregor, Dr Houghton enlists the help of the arrogant, wisecracking riverboat skipper, Captain Frank Wolff, to guide them through the serpentine Amazon River in La Quila, his swift wooden boat. Now, as the intrepid trio ventures deeper and deeper into the heart of an impenetrable green maze, searching for something that cannot be found, a centuries-old curse and the ruthless aristocrat, Prince Joachim, threaten to put an end to their ambitious plans. And, sooner or later, the jungle always wins. Is it true that the Spanish conquistador, Don Aguirre, was lost in the same God-forsaken part of the world? — Nick Riganas
- In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors travel to South America in search of the Tears of the Moon, a mythical tree whose petals can cure any illness, heal any injury, and lift any curse. After most of the men die in the jungle, the survivors are nursed back to health by a local tribe using the tree petals. When they refuse to reveal the location of the tree, the Spanish destroy the village, and as punishment are cursed to never die and never be able to leave sight of the river. In 1916, Dr. Lily Houghton and her brother MacGregor detail Lily's research on the Tears of the Moon to an association of English explorers, explaining that the petals could revitalize medicine and aid in the war effort. The Houghton's request access to an arrowhead recovered by Dr. Albert Falls that Lily believes is key to locating the tree. When the association denies their request, believing the tree to be a myth and a female scientist unqualified to join their ranks, Lily steals the arrowhead instead. She narrowly avoids Prince Joachim, a German aristocrat who also wants the arrowhead and the tree. In South America, Frank Wolff takes tourists on jungle river cruises, which he embellishes with fake dangers and corny jokes. When his boat engine is repossessed by businessman Nilo, he attempts to steal it back. Caught in the act by Lily, Frank pretends to be Nilo and arrogantly tells her that the Tears of the Moon is a myth and that she will not be able to handle the dangers of the jungle, but changes his tone when he notices that Lily is in possession of the arrowhead. Frank's deception is revealed with the real Nilo shows up, but Lily hires Frank anyway after he underbids Nilo and bravely fights off a wild jaguar attack. Frank, Lily, and MacGregor depart on Frank's boat but are almost intercepted by Nilo attempting to get his engine back, mercenaries hired by Joachim to retrieve the arrowhead from Lily, and Joachim himself attacking in a German submarine. After they make their mistake, it is revealed that the attacking jaguar was actually Frank's pet Proxima, and Lily wonders if Frank can be trusted. Joachim locates the cursed conquistadors, whose bodies have turned to stone due to them traveling too far from the river, and have been infested over time by tree roots, snakes, and insects. Joachim frees them by diverting the river, and offers to help them break the curse if they help him to retrieve the arrowhead. As Frank, Lily and MacGregor continue down the river they become closer. MacGregor reveals to Frank that he was nearly disowned by his family due to his homosexuality, but Lily stood by him. Breaking into Frank's cabin, Lily finds photos and drawings of new inventions such as the automobile, but also discovers drawings of the arrowhead and research on the Tears of the Moon. Lily accuses Frank of wanting the tree for himself, but he explains he gave up searching for it a long time ago and believed it couldn't be found. They are attacked by a tribe of "cannibals" who demand the arrowhead, but this is revealed to be another deception by Frank working with a friendly tribe. Frank apologizes and says he was unable to call off the plan, but Lily rebuffs him. Trader Sam, the tribe's female leader, translates the writing on the arrowhead, revealing the location of the tree, and that it only blooms under a blood moon. The conquistadors attack and manage to take the arrowhead; Frank recovers it and gives it to Lily but is stabbed through the chest with a sword and falls to his death. Lily runs away from the river so that the Spaniards cannot follow her. The next morning, Lily discovers that Frank has miraculously survived. He reveals that his real name is Francisco, and he is actually one of the cursed conquistadors, unable to die or leave the river. The expedition to find the tree was originally a noble one to save the leader's sick daughter, but when the natives were attacked by the Spaniards, Frank switched sides to help the villagers. After years of fighting, Frank trapped the others in a cave away from the river. He then spent time searching for the tree to lift his own curse, but had been unable to find it without the arrowhead. An injured MacGregor stays behind with Trader Sam while Lily and Frank make the final journey to the tree. MacGregor is captured by Joachim and forced to reveal the location of the tree. Frank, Lily, the Germans, and the Spaniards all converge on the tree, which begins to bloom under the blood moon. The moon passes quickly as they fight, and Lily is only able to recover one petal. MacGregor kills Joachim, and Frank crashes his boat to block the river, turning himself and the other Spaniards into stone. Lily uses the petal to revive Frank and break the curse, only afterwords discovering that due to a shift in the moonlight there is one petal left for Lily's research. Back in London, the society has offered full membership to Lily, which she rejects. She shows Frank London and gives him his first driving lesson in her automobile as well as delivering a corny joke herself.

Critic Reviews for Jungle Cruise
Audience reviews for jungle cruise.
Silly but enjoyable. Sort of dual remake of both "The Mummy" (1999) and the first "Pirates of the Caribbean".
Disney film that is enough to watch with the family and friends, but offers little return value. Between all the remakes of animated classics, Disney lacks a focus on new and fresh ideas. Jungle Cruise may not be the step in the right direction but it demonstrates they are still willing to take a risk. Blunt is well cast and she is rarely miscast, but it's Johnson who feels out of his element. The film is a mess of special effects mixed together with Pirates of the Caribbean. It's an odd choice the filmmaker and writers made for this mega budgeted film. I just don't understand why they make these films so massive and risk not turning a profit. This should've been a more character focused film with a splash of big adventure. I have heard they are planning a sequel, but I thought they closed this off well enough to avoid a sequel.
A great adventure film and while it is reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Mummy, it has some original twists and the humor makes the film. Blunt and Johnson are great and Plemmons looks like he is seventh heaven chewing up the scenery!. Well Directed and written. Enjoyable from beginning to end. 09-06-2021
Disney turned a theme park ride that mostly involved sitting into a billion-dollar supernatural adventure franchise, so why not try another swing at reshaping its existing park properties into would-be blockbuster tentpoles? Jungle Cruise owes a lot to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and actually owes a little too much for its own good. For the first half of the movie, it coasts on the charms of stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and some light-footed visual misadventures. Then the second half turn involves a significant personal revelation, and that's where the movie felt like it was being folded and crushed into form to closely resemble the Pirates franchise. It gets quite convoluted and littered with lackluster villains, too many and too stock to ever establish as intriguing or memorable (one of them is a man made of honey, so that's a thing). I found myself also pulling away in the second half because of the inevitable romance. Their screwball combative banter between Johnson and Blunt gave me some smiles and entertainment and then, as they warm to one another, it sadly dissipated, as did my interest. The comedy is really labored at points. Johnson keeps referring to Blunt as "Pants" because she's a woman and she wears pants in the twentieth century. It was not funny the first time and it's not funny or endearing after the 80th rendition. The supernatural elements and curses feel extraneous and tacked on. With the Pirates films, at least the good ones, there are a lot of plot elements they need to keep in the air and you assume they're be able to land them as needed. The competing character goals were so well established and developed in those movies and served as an anchor even amid the chaos of plot complications and double and triple crosses. With Jungle Cruise, it feels like a lot of effort but also a lot of dropped or mishandled story and thematic elements. This feels more creatively by committee and the heavily green screen action is harder to fully immerse with. As a wacky adventure serial, there may be enough to keep a viewer casually entertained, but Jungle Cruise feels too beholden to the Pirates formula without bringing anything exciting or fresh on its own imagination merits. In the pantheon of Disney movies based on Disney theme park rides, "Jungle Cruise" is pretty good—leagues better than dreck like "Haunted Mansion," though not quite as satisfying as the original "Pirates of the Caribbean."
The most pleasant surprise is that director Jaume Collet-Serra (" The Shallows ") and a credited team of five, count 'em, writers have largely jettisoned the ride's mid-century American colonial snarkiness and casual racism (a tradition only recently eliminated ). Setting the revamp squarely in the wheelhouse of blockbuster franchise-starters like " Raiders of the Lost Ark ," " Romancing the Stone " and "The Mummy," and pushing the fantastical elements to the point where the story barely seems to be taking place in our universe, it's a knowingly goofy romp, anchored to the banter between its leads, an English feminist and adventurer played by Emily Blunt and a riverboat captain/adventurer played by Dwayne Johnson .
Notably, however, even though the stars' costumes (and a waterfall sequence) evoke the classic "The African Queen"—John Huston's comic romance/action film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn ; worth looking up if you've never watched it—the sexual chemistry between the two is nonexistent, save for a few fleeting moments, like when Frank picks up the heroine‘s hand-cranked silent film camera and captures affectionate images of her. At times the leads seem more like a brother and sister needling each other than a will they/won’t they bantering couple. Lack of sexual heat is often (strangely) a bug, or perhaps a feature, in films starring Johnson, the four-quadrant blockbuster king (though not on Johnson’s HBO drama "Ballers"). Blunt keeps putting out more than enough flinty looks of interest to sell a romance, but her leading man rarely reflects it back at her. Fortunately, the film's tight construction and prolific action scenes carry it, and Blunt and Johnson do the irresistible force/immovable object dynamic well enough, swapping energies as the story demands.
Blunt's character, Lily Houghton, is a well-pedigreed adventurer who gathers up maps belonging to her legendary father and travels to the Amazon circa 1916 to find the Tears of the Moon, petals from a "Tree of Life"-type of fauna that can heal all infirmities. She and her snooty, pampered brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) hire Frank "Skipper" Wolff (Johnson) to bring them to their destination. The only notable concession to the original theme park ride comes here: Wolff's day job is taking tourists upriver and making cheesy jokes in the spirit of "hosts" on Disney Jungle Cruise rides of yore. On the mission, Johnson immediately settles into a cranky but funny old sourpuss vibe, a la John Wayne or Harrison Ford , and inhabits it amiably enough, even though buoyant, almost childlike optimism comes more naturally to him than world-weary gruffness.
The supporting cast is stacked with overqualified character players. Paul Giamatti plays a gold-toothed, sunburned, cartoonishly “Italian” harbor master who delights at keeping Frank in debt. Edgar Ramirez is creepy and scary as a conquistador whose curse from centuries ago has trapped him in the jungle. Jesse Plemons plays the main baddie, Prince Joachim, who wants to filch the power of the petals for the Kaiser back in Germany (he's Belloq to the stars' Indy and Marion, trying to swipe the Ark). Unsurprisingly, given his track record, Plemons steals the film right out from under its leads.
Collet-Serra keeps the action moving along, pursuing a more classical style than is commonplace in recent live-action Disney product (by which I mean, the blocking and editing have a bit of elegance, and you always know where characters are in relation to each other). The editing errs on the side of briskness to such an extent that affecting, beautiful, or spectacular images never get to linger long enough to become iconic. The CGI is dicey, particularly on the larger jungle animals—was the production rushed, or were the artists just overworked?—and there are moments when everything seems so rubbery/plasticky that you seem to be watching the first film that was actually shot on location at Disney World.
But the staging and execution of the chases and fights compensates. Derivative of films that were themselves highly derivative, "Jungle Cruise" has the look and feel of a paycheck gig for all involved, but everyone seems to be having a great time, including the filmmakers.
In theaters and on Disney+ for a premium charge starting Friday, July 30th.

RELATED: Here’s What’s New on Disney+ in July 2021
- Jungle Cruise takes inspiration from the famous Disney Parks' attraction in the same way that Pirates of the Caribbean did, and Disney is hoping for the same level of success with this potentially franchise-launching first movie.
- Part world-tripping adventure, part action-packed quest for the truth behind ancient secrets and legends, Jungle Cruise really starts steaming once Johnson's rough-and-tumble skipper Frank Wolff and Blunt's progressive and independent explorer Lily Houghton meet up in a Brazilian port town.
- The core of the narrative here is definitely the adventure along the Amazon river (and beyond) but the heart of the story is the relationship between the leads.
- Romancing the Stone , Pirates of the Caribbean , and The African Queen were often cited as inspiration for Jungle Cruise .
- Complicating Wolff and Houghton's journey into the unknown is the local businessman Nilo ( Paul Giamatti ) who wants to run Wolff out of business to control everything in the town, as well as the more worldly antagonist Prince Joachim ( Jesse Plemons ), who is as well-connected as he is devious and deceitful.
- Wolff and Houghton aren't alone in their journey; they'll have the somewhat stuffy but charming McGregor Houghton ( Jack Whitehall ), Lily's brother, by their side, along with some unexpected allies.
- McGregor, a very proper British gentleman, has quite the wardrobe in this movie. Whitehall has somewhere on the order of 10 costume changes, which is more befitting a leading lady in classic Hollywood productions than a supporting male character. (He had a team tasked with following him around to keep his all-white three-piece suit crisp and clean in between takes on the muddy jungle set.) Jungle Cruise plays this up quite comedically, especially when McGregor and Wolff first meet aboard the skipper's rickety steamer ship, La Quila. As Whitehall himself said of the character, "McGregor might just be the worst person that you could have in this environment."
- McGregor also acts as the voice of reason, a counterpoint to his headstrong sister Lily.
- Whitehall's mother, Hilary Gish , read lines with him for his audition tape, playing the part of both Blunt and Johnson's characters. We're told the footage of this exists somewhere, but we have yet to see it (and would love to.) Meanwhile, Whitehall and his father Michael can be seen together in Netflix's Travels With My Father .
- During our set visit, Whitehall had to act opposite an actor in a leotard performing as a jaguar which was terrorizing the tavern. Whitehall has worked opposite real animals before, such as some rather rude horses in The Nutcracker , but on this occasion he remarked, "It's so good that this is not a real jaguar."
- The early villain of the piece, Nilo, is a well-appointed but severely sunburned businessman, played with plenty of personality by Giamatti, who had quite a bit of latitude when it came to shaping his character.
- The "really wacky" script, as Giamatti said, called for Nilo to have an animal friend in the movie. Originally this was intended to be a monkey, which can be found throughout the port town's market, but eventually they went with a cockatoo named Lover -- named Rosita in the film itself -- for the final shoot. Giamatti's rapport with Lover ended up getting the bird more time in the spotlight and even a few more lines in the script.
- While Nilo will antagonize our heroes in the first section of the movie, he's not the Big Bad of Jungle Cruise . Knowing that, Giamatti wanted to make him a little goofier, a little funnier, and a little more cartoonish.
- Johnson in particular did a lot of research into the iconic ride for this movie, including spending time with the Imagineers in the Disney Vault. He and the whole team are quite proud of the movie, especially since the adventure ride was so important to Walt Disney, who was the attraction's first skipper when Walt Disney World first opened.
- Roughly the first half hour of Jungle Cruise takes place on the Hawaii-based stand-in set for the Brazilian port town, where our set visit took place. The hotel, the market, the tavern, and all the boats and boathouses along the docks were practical creations for the set, and they're all phenomenal. If they had been left standing, they would have been quite the adventurous attraction for tourists to explore. Sadly, these sets were dismantled when the production moved to Atlanta in order to explore more of the magic and mythology (and "Adventureland" Easter eggs) that can be found in the remainder of Jungle Cruise .
Jungle Cruise opens in theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 30th.

Synopsis [ ]
Set in the early 1900s, a tramp steamer captain named Frank Wolff [5] takes a pair of scientist siblings down the Amazon River in search of the Tears of the Moon , a flower with miraculous healing properties, while evading Germans. [6]
In the 16th century, Don Aguirre leads Spanish conquistadors to South America in search of the Tears of the Moon, a mythical tree whose petals can cure any illness, heal any injury, and lift any curse. After most men die in the jungle, the survivors are nursed back to health by a local tribe using the tree petals. When they refuse to reveal the location of the tree, the Spanish destroy the village. As punishment, the conquistadors became cursed by the village chief to never die and never be able to leave sight of the river or the jungle would take them back to it for all eternity.
In 1916 London, Dr. Lily Houghton and her brother, MacGregor , present Lily's Tears of the Moon research to an association of Royal Society explorers, explaining that the petals could revitalize medicine and aid in the British war effort. The Houghtons request access to an arrowhead recovered by Dr. Albert Falls that Lily believes is key to locating the tree. When the association denies their request, believing the tree is a myth and a female scientist is unqualified to join their ranks, Lily steals the arrowhead. She narrowly avoids Prince Joachim, a German aristocrat who also wants the arrowhead to find the tree.
In South America, Frank Wolff takes tourists on jungle river cruises, which are embellished with fake dangers and corny jokes. When his boat engine is repossessed by businessman Nilo, Frank attempts to steal it back. Caught in the act by Lily, Frank pretends to be Nilo and claims the Tears of the Moon is a myth and that she could not withstand the dangerous jungle; he then backtracks after noticing Lily possesses the arrowhead. Frank's deception is revealed when the real Nilo shows up, but Lily hires Frank anyway after he underbids Nilo and bravely fights a jaguar.
Frank, Lily, and MacGregor depart on Frank's boat, but they are nearly intercepted by Nilo attempting to confiscate his engine, by mercenaries hired by Joachim to retrieve the arrowhead from Lily, and by Joachim himself attacking in a German submarine. After making their escape, it is revealed that the attacking jaguar was actually Frank's pet, Proxima. Lily wonders if Frank can be trusted.
Joachim locates the cursed conquistadors, whose bodies turned to stone due to them traveling too far from the river, and have been infested over time by tree roots, deadly snakes, poisonous frogs, and stinging insects. Joachim frees them by diverting the river, and offers to help them break the curse if they help him retrieve the arrowhead.
As Frank, Lily and MacGregor continue down the river, they grow closer. MacGregor tells Frank he was nearly disowned by his family due to being gay, but Lily stood by him. Breaking into Frank's cabin, Lily finds photos and drawings of inventions such as the automobile, but also discovers drawings of the arrowhead and research on the Tears of the Moon. Lily accuses Frank of wanting the tree for himself, but he explains he gave up searching for it a long time ago and believed it can never be found. A tribe of "cannibals" attack them and demand the arrowhead, but this is exposed as another of Frank's faked dangers; they are a friendly tribe he has an arrangement with. Frank apologizes and claims he was unable to call off the plan, but Lily rebuffs him.
Trader Sam, the tribe's female leader, translates the writing on the arrowhead, revealing the tree's location and that it only blooms under a blood moon. The conquistadors attack and take the arrowhead; Frank recovers it and gives it to Lily, but is fatally stabbed through the chest with a sword. Lily runs away from the river so the Spaniards are unable to follow due to the curse's limits.
The next morning, Lily discovers that Frank has miraculously survived. He reveals that his real name is Francisco, and he is one of the cursed conquistadors, unable to die or leave the river. The expedition to find the tree was originally a noble one to save Aguirre's sick daughter, Anna, but when the natives were attacked by the Spaniards, Frank switched his allegiance to help the villagers. After years of fighting, Frank trapped Aguirre and the others in a cave where the river could not reclaim them and where they became petrified. He then spent centuries searching for the tree to lift his own curse. But unable to find it without the arrowhead, he had finally given up. He decided to build a town next to the river, he made and lost friends and eventually decides to build a boat and give jungle cruises as well as taking in stray kitties all of which were named Proxima.
An injured MacGregor stays behind with Trader Sam while Lily and Frank make the final journey to the tree. MacGregor is captured by Joachim and forced to reveal the tree's location. Joachim breaks his arrangement with the cursed brigands, in order to keep the petals for himself, but Frank, Lily, the Germans, and the Spaniards all converge on the tree. While solving the puzzle, the arrowhead is discovered to be a heart piece having a gem, which after placing blooms the tree under the blood moon. The moon passes as they fight, and Lily is only able to recover one petal. MacGregor fights Joachim, who gets flattened under a fallen piece of ruin, while Frank crashes his boat to block the river, which turns himself, Aguirre, and the other Spaniards into stone. Lily expends the petal to revive Frank and break his curse. The moon breaks out one last ray of light and one final petal blooms - Lily's research can proceed.
Returning to the United Kingdom, the society has offered full membership to Lily, which she rejects via MacGregor, who uses the opportunity to insult the society, saying that they are unworthy of the research, or the tale of the trip, or anything learned by it, primarily stories due to their chauvinism and insular nature. Lily fulfills her promise to show Frank all of London and the movie ends as she gives him his first driving lesson in her automobile, where she herself delivers a corny joke, worthy of Frank's admiration.
- Dwayne Johnson as Frank Wolff :
A shrewd, cynical but ultimately noble steamboat skipper who reluctantly agrees to guide two explorers on their quest for the mythical Tears of the Moon Tree. He eventually reveals his true name (Francisco Lopez de Heredia) and identity as the adopted brother of Aguirre as well as one of the cursed conquistadors, forever trapped by the Amazon river. He is a trained cartographer who has spent centuries searching for the Tree to break the curse that made him immortal so he can die peacefully. Meanwhile, he has built a town, and a boat he christened " La Quila " for his business under "Jungle Navigation Company". He has had a number of tamed exotic cats as a pet, each one named "Proxima".
- Emily Blunt as Dr. Lily Houghton :
An eccentric, adventurous, and virtuous botanist working in a male-dominated field. She embarks on a quest to find the Tears of the Moon Tree, hoping to harness its power for modern medicine. Possessing an ancient arrowhead and one of Frank's old maps of the Amazon, she proves she is resourceful and capable in martial arts and lock picking skills, though she cannot swim. She wants to prove herself equal to her chauvinistic peers but gains some notoriety for wearing trousers.
- Édgar Ramírez as Lope de Aguirre :
A Spanish conquistador who once sought the Tree's power to save his ill daughter, only to be cursed with immortality for his cruelty towards the tree's guardians. Temporarily freed by German explorers, he sets out to take revenge on his adopted brother, Francisco, who sided against him to defend a native tribe. His body is now composed of and infested with snakes.
- Jack Whitehall as McGregor Houghton :
Lily's younger brother who works as her assistant. He confesses to Frank that Lily stood by him when his family nearly disowned him after he refused to marry, as his interest lies "elsewhere". Lily hired him and allowed him to stay with her so he could support himself. A somewhat foppish snob who adheres to proper etiquette and prefers wearing three-piece suits. He seems ill-suited to jungle life, but gradually develops into a more confident, rugged man by the end of the expedition.
- Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim :
A deranged and ambitious German royal, who finances and leads a military expedition with mercenaries to claim the Tree of Life, both to aid Germany's war effort and achieve immortality. According to Lily, he is the youngest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II, unlike the other characters, he is based on an actual prince.
- Paul Giamatti as Nilo Nemolato :
The harbormaster at Porto Velho, where Frank moors his boat. He is also a business rival and confiscates Frank's boat engine when Frank is unable to repay him his loan. This leads Frank to wreck Nilo's prize boats in return. He owns a parrot he named "Rosita".
- Veronica Falcón as Trader Sam :
The chief of Puka Michuna tribe in 1916, a tribe which guards the Tree.
- Dani Rovira as Sancho :

Frank's young assistant.
- Simone Lockhart as Anna:
The daughter of Aguirre.
- Ben Jenkin as Proxima :
Frank's pet jaguar.

Dwayne Johnson commandeering a Jungle Cruise boat at the Magic Kingdom for "research"
A Jungle Cruise movie has been in the works at Disney since at least 2006 . A previous attempt that was originally intended for a 2007 release would have featured Tom Hanks and Tim Allen in starring roles as a Skipper and a frustrated passenger going down river to search for a miraculous cure in a story described as a more comical take on Heart of Darkness . This version was still being tossed around as late as 2011 , but ended up never materializing. [7]
On August 19, 2015 , it was confirmed a new version of the project was moving forward with Dwayne Johnson set to star. [8] On April 7, 2017, Johnson announced he would also be producing. [9] On July 31 , 2017 it was confirmed that Jaume Collet-Serra will direct the film. [10] They have also been confirmed to be working off on a script written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. [11]
On January 30 , 2018 , Emily Blunt was announced to sign on to the project and that Michael Green was hired to rework the script. [12] On March 26 , 2018, English comedian Jack Whitehall was cast as the scientist's brother. [13] On April 19, 2018, Édgar Ramírez and Matt Damon had signed on to the project as the film's villains. [14] In December 2018 , it was reported that actor Jack Whitehall 's character would be homosexual and would have a coming out scene in the film with Dwayne Johnson . There was some backlash over the report, with a few expressing outrage over a straight actor being cast as a "camp" gay character.
In January 2019 , it was announced that James Newton Howard had joined the production as the film score composer. Additionally, he would later collaborate with Metallica on an instrumental version of the song "Nothing Else Matters" for the film. According to the band's drummer Lars Ulrich, Metallica worked on the film after Walt Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey , felt like Jungle Cruise was "the right fit" for a collaboration between Disney and Metallica. Bailey had been "always looking for the right match where there was a way that Metallica could contribute to some Disney project". The band members recorded their parts from their individual studios, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The score was recorded in February 2020 by a 99-person orchestra, with vocals provided by 40 members from the Los Angeles Master Chorale. In order to add a "regional flavor", Howard incorporated panpipes and Brazilian percussion instruments. Frequent Metallica collaborator Greg Fidelman served as associate producer and engineer. The soundtrack album was released on July 30 , 2021 .

- The film was initially slated for October 11, 2019 before being moved to July 24, 2020, and was delayed to its current date to July 30, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Perfect Time to Ride Jungle Cruise in Disney World
There are certain rides in Disney World that often seem to have long lines.
Slinky Dog Dash , Rise of the Resistance , Flight of Passage , and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are all culprits of this. Another ride we could add to that list is Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom . It’s a classic, but it can be a pain to wait in the line — so when is the best time to ride?
For the Lowest Wait Time
Jungle Cruise can be incredibly popular, despite the fact that it was an opening day attraction in Magic Kingdom. The line often gets a wait time of more than an hour, but there are two times of day where you could get in the queue and probably wait less.
Probably the best time to get in line for Jungle Cruise is first thing in the morning. This ride isn’t included in Early Theme Park Entry for resort guests, so even if you’re staying off-site, you’ll have an equal chance to get in line first thing in the morning. Because it’s closer to the front of the park, the line can form quickly, however, so don’t dilly-dally when getting over there.
Jungle Cruise is also a great ride to hop in line for at the end of the night. Many people prefer to ride it during the daytime, so the wait often drops after dark. And once the fireworks are over in Magic Kingdom, many visitors will leave the park. As long as you get in line before the clock strikes closing time, you should be able to ride without too long of a wait!
For the Best Experience
Our team battled it out over this one! Many people argued that the best time to ride Jungle Cruise was during the daylight hours because there are so many hidden details you can only notice when it’s light outside, and they’re probably correct. However, you should keep in mind that the Jungle Cruise queue and ride can get a little toasty midday, especially during the summer.
If you’ve already ridden Jungle Cruise during the daytime before, we recommend checking it out at night at least once! It’s an entirely different experience, and it’s almost a little bit spooky, especially when you get to the temple scene. You might not see as many details, but the weather will be cooler and it’ll have a different vibe altogether.
So there you go — our recommendations for riding Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom! Stay tuned to AllEars for more tips and tricks for navigating the parks.

Disney Movies That Lost Millions At The Box Office
Posted: April 9, 2024 | Last updated: April 9, 2024
Disney's epic fails
Disney endured a series of box office flops last year, with disappointing releases like The Haunted Mansion and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny losing the studio millions. The Thanksgiving box office results were particularly disheartening; both the animated musical fantasy Wish and the superhero blockbuster The Marvels failed to attract moviegoers. In fact, The Marvels had the lowest-grossing opening weekend in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The studio has high hopes for an epic comeback, with upcoming releases such as Captain America: Brave New World and Inside Out 2 offering the potential for a turnaround.
In the meantime, we've compiled a list of the biggest Disney box office bombs of the century so far. Read on to discover which movies make the roll of shame – some entries might even surprise you . All dollar amounts in US dollars.
Treasure Planet (2002)
Disney's swashbuckling adventure saga Treasure Planet sailed onto screens in 2002. Featuring a cutting-edge animation style and a stellar cast of voice actors, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emma Thompson, and Martin Short, the film boasted a staggering $140 million production budget.
Despite its current status as a cult classic, the movie failed to make a splash at the box office, earning just $110 million globally upon its release. A significant factor in its dismal performance was the stiff competition it faced from the likes of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Die Another Day.
While it fell short by $30 million compared to its production budget, the financial outcome becomes even more bleak when the costs of marketing the movie are factored in. Sources estimate that Disney suffered losses ranging from $85 million to a colossal $240 million.
Meet the Robinsons (2007)
Disney released the ambitious sci-fi flick Meet the Robinsons in 2007, boasting a reported budget of $150 million.
Despite garnering positive reviews and technically turning a small profit of $19 million against its production cost, the film is still considered a major flop.
According to Screen Rant , the film resulted in losses of more than $200 million for Disney when marketing costs are factored in. Unsurprisingly, plans for a sequel were swiftly scrapped.
A Christmas Carol (2009)
Disney's take on Charles Dickens's classic A Christmas Carol , starring Jim Carrey as the voice of the villainous Ebenezer Scrooge, hit screens in 2009.
Despite negative reviews that slammed everything from the overly spooky script to the motion capture CGI, the film grossed a respectable $325 million globally, resulting in a profit of $125 million against its production budget.
Unfortunately, that still wasn't enough to save the ill-fated holiday flick. When factoring in marketing costs, it's estimated the box office bomb lost Disney around $100 million.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
The following year, Disney suffered another financial blow with the release of The Sorcerer's Apprentice .
Starring Nicolas Cage, the 2010 fantasy blockbuster had a huge $150 million production budget, yet only managed to gross $215 million worldwide. The film's failure to make an impact at the box office was attributed to mixed reviews from critics and fierce competition from other releases Inception and Despicable Me.
Although the big-budget production technically turned a modest profit, it was deemed a flop when factoring in distribution and marketing costs. By Screen Rant 's calculations, this could ultimately have resulted in losses of up to $160 million for the studio.
Mars Needs Moms (2011)
Disney released alien sci-fi film Mars Needs Moms in 2011, splashing out a hefty $150 million on its production.
However, on its release the film received a slew of negative reviews, with criticism focusing on everything from the poor script to the creepy animation style. As a result, it earned a pitiful $39 million globally, resulting in a loss of $110 million – and that's before distribution and marketing are factored in.
Sources can’t agree on just how much money this particular box office disaster lost Disney, with estimates ranging from $143 million to a staggering $336 million. Ouch.
John Carter (2012)
Disney debuted its action-adventure sci-fi saga John Carter in 2012. Despite the film's wacky concept, the studio was confident it would be the start of its next big franchise, and the project was allocated a juggernaut budget of $250 million, which made it one of the most expensive movies of all time.
However, the ill-fated flick struggled to attract cinema fans, pulling in just $284 million worldwide. Expensive reshoots that drove up the original budget and a poorly executed marketing campaign were largely blamed for its failure.
While it technically turned a profit, the movie is estimated to have cost Disney anywhere from $151 million to a devastating $341 million. Needless to say, ambitious plans for future John Carter movies were quickly forgotten.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
On paper, 2013's The Lone Ranger looked like a guaranteed hit. After all, it boasted the star power of Johnny Depp, who had previously fronted the wildly successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for Disney.
Hoping to launch a new money-spinning live-action movie series, the studio handed the Western epic a massive $215 million production budget. However, the movie opened to a slate of negative reviews upon its release and pulled in just $260 million globally.
When factoring in additional costs, the film suffered losses estimated to range between $230 million and $277 million. Unsurprisingly, Disney ditched its plans for any future sequels.
Tomorrowland (2015)
The 2015 adventure saga Tomorrowland seemed destined for silver-screen success. It was based on a beloved Disney theme park attraction, boasted the star power of George Clooney, and had a budget of $190 million behind it.
In a surprising turn of events, the movie earned just $209 million globally upon its release, with a poor marketing campaign once again blamed for failing to draw in audiences.
While technically making a modest profit against its production budget, it's thought the film lost Disney between $170 million and $266 million when other costs are factored in.
The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Disney Pixar’s family-friendly animated flick The Good Dinosaur hit the silver screen in November 2015, hoping to take the Thanksgiving box office by storm.
While the project had a giant $200 million budget behind it, industry experts said at the time that it would need to bank an eye-watering $500 million to break even when factoring in costs such as marketing and distribution. (As reported by Variety in winter 2015.)
Despite the studio's hopes that The Good Dinosaur would be a roaring success, it received a lukewarm reception from audiences and pulled in just $332 million worldwide. Disney is believed to have lost around $167 million as a result.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time had all the makings of a hit blockbuster, including a $130 million production budget and a star-studded cast featuring Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Chris Pine.
Surprisingly, the fantasy-adventure flick failed to attract moviegoers, earning just $132 million globally upon its 2018 release. Tough box office competition from another Disney release, the superhero movie Black Panther , is thought to have been a significant factor in its downfall.
Though the film technically turned a small profit against its production budget, Screen Rant suggests expenses such as marketing and distribution will have cost Disney around $193 million.
Mulan (2020)
Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan dropped in March 2020.
Unfortunately, it was released just as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world, resulting in an understandably poor box office performance that saw it gross just $70 million against its whopping $200 million production budget.
While the film later became a hit on the streaming platform Disney+, allowing the studio to recover some of its losses, it still wasn't enough. All in all, Mulan is estimated to have lost the studio between $140 million and $150 million, with some experts even suggesting that audiences have grown tired of live-action remakes of beloved Disney classics.
Onward (2020)
Yet another victim of the pandemic was Disney Pixar’s Onward, which hit screens in March 2020.
The animated fantasy flick boasted the vocal talents of Hollywood megastars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland yet pulled in a mere $142 million against its estimated $175 million budget.
Like Mulan , the movie later found success on Disney+. However, Statista reports it still lost the studio a painful $130 million.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Jungle Cruise had all the necessary ingredients to be the next big blockbuster. Based on a beloved Disney World theme park ride, it boasted the star power of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and had a hefty $200 million budget behind it.
Despite high expectations, the action-packed adventure saga performed poorly at the box office, earning just $220 million globally.
The pandemic was once again cited as a reason for its failure, while Disney's strategy of releasing movies straight to streaming shortly after a cinematic release is also believed to have played a role. Instead of opting to buy a movie ticket, audiences were willing to wait a few extra weeks to watch the film at home.
The film is reported to have lost Disney around $151 million.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
When the trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon dropped, it was showered with praise for its diversity, with fans seemingly eager to meet the first-ever Southeast Asian Disney princess.
However, this buzz failed to translate to silver screen success. The 2021 flick grossed just $130 million globally despite an estimated production budget in excess of $100 million.
According to Screen Rant, Raya and the Last Dragon lost Disney $120 million once costs such as marketing and distribution were factored in. The film was also another unfortunate victim of the pandemic, while the studio's decision to release it simultaneously in cinemas and via its streaming platform was, once again, also deemed questionable.
Turning Red (2022)
Disney Pixar's 2022 animated feature, Turning Red , faced challenges in attracting moviegoers despite being the first Pixar project solely directed by a woman.
While the film garnered excellent critical acclaim, the praise sadly failed to generate much box office action. With a worldwide gross of just $20 million, the film fell tragically short of its $175 million production budget.
In total, it's estimated Turning Red lost the studio around $167 million. Again, the decision to drop the flick in cinemas and on the Disney+ streaming platform simultaneously has been cited as a significant factor in its financial failure. Disney, we're seeing a theme here...
Lightyear (2022)
The beloved Toy Story franchise has been a major success for the Mouse House, so the studio naturally anticipated the 2022 spin-off Lightyear would achieve similar box office stardom. The project was allocated a budget of $200 million.
But despite its hefty production spend and generally positive reviews, the film underperformed at the box office, grossing just $226 million globally.
Sources estimate additional costs resulted in the film incurring losses of somewhere between $106 million and $122 million. The unfortunate flick was another victim of the pandemic, while some moviegoers also chose to skip it due to the controversial replacement of Tim Allen with Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear.
Strange World (2022)
Disney's animated sci-fi adventure flick Strange World landed in cinemas in November 2022. It boasted the star power of Jake Gyllenhaal and Gabrielle Union, while sources suggest its budget was somewhere between $120 million and $180 million.
Despite having the basic ingredients for box office success, Strange World tanked, grossing just $73 million worldwide. A string of negative reviews and stiff competition from another Disney release, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , contributed to its disappointing performance.
Overall, sources estimate this box-office bomb cost Disney as much as $377 million.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny , the hotly anticipated fifth entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, hit screens in June 2023.
Sources claim the movie had a production budget of around $300 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. And this eye-watering sum doesn't even account for marketing and distribution costs...
However, following a string of thoroughly average reviews, the summer blockbuster only managed to pull in $384 million globally. According to Screen Rant, the flop has cost Disney at least $100 million.
Haunted Mansion (2023)
Disney's Haunted Mansion reboot dropped in July 2023, starring Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson, and Tiffany Haddish.
Confident the project would be a box office hit, Disney allocated it a generous $150 million production budget. However, negative reviews, combined with Barbie and Oppenheimer being released at the same time, saw the film pull in just $117 million worldwide.
In total, it's estimated this spooky flop cost Disney a truly terrifying $100 million.
The Marvels (2023)
Marvel movies are usually a surefire hit at the box office. However, the latest installment in the superhero saga, The Marvels , is gearing up to be the studio's biggest flop to date.
The film had a jaw-dropping production budget of $275 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made. Yet despite its super-sized budget and a star-studded cast including Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, The Marvels has made just $197 million at the time of writing.
Sources have claimed the movie needs to gross more than $700 million to start turning a profit, meaning this box office bomb is on track to lose Disney hundreds of millions by the end of its cinematic run. Numerous factors have contributed to its downfall, including its stars being unable to promote it due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes and tough box office competition from the likes of Napoleon and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Wish (2023)
One film that certainly hasn't been bothering The Marvels at the box office is Disney's other latest release, Wish . The animated fantasy flick aimed to draw in family audiences over the Thanksgiving period, but negative reviews and sharing a box office with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes means it has only managed to bank around $85 million at the time of writing.
The film had an estimated production budget of more than $175 million, with Screen Rant estimating that, with additional costs factored in, Wish would need to gross at least $370 million to be considered a box office hit. But with a lack of domestic and international success, it's almost impossible the movie will hit this target. Perhaps Disney had better get Wish -ing...
