Fun Day Trips near Atlanta: Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

By RootsRated Media

Published October 30, 2018 Last Updated September 18, 2020

Located about 23 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, in Marietta, Kennesaw Mountain brings together history and nature. The violent past that’s the namesake of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is in sharp contrast to the tranquility and beauty of the park today.

The site of a major Civil War battle in 1864, this beautiful park offers more than 17 miles of interpretative trails dotted with historical markers that crisscross the 2,965-acre national monument. The scars of war are still visible throughout the park, most notably on the Cheatham Hill Trail where some of the eight miles of earthen fortifications remain. Even today it’s possible to stumble upon Civil War relics in the area, though it’s illegal to search for them or remove them from the park.

Despite the singular name, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is actually made up of two mountains, Big and Little Kennesaw. During the week it’s possible to drive or bike up a paved road to the top of Big Kennesaw, the tallest peak in the metro Atlanta area at 1,808 feet in elevation. (The road is closed to vehicular traffic on weekends.) Little Kennesaw is lined with hiking trails that connect the big mountain with the rest of the park.

For a look back on a pivotal era of American history or simply to enjoy the natural beauty that’s there today, a trip to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is one of the must-do stops on any trip to the Atlanta area.

Activities and Things to Do at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

Explore civil war history.

The museum and visitor center near Cheatham Hill, off Stilesboro Road near Old Highway 41, is a good place to start your visit. Pick up park guides and  maps  then explore the history museum. A 35-minute movie about the battle and Sherman’s march on Atlanta plays at 15 minutes past the hour every hour.

Civil War Legacy Itinerary

7 georgia hikes with amazing views (within 3 hours of atlanta), day trip ideas, take a hike.

Trails range in difficulty, length and elevation changes. The shortest are less than a mile and easily traversed. Some of the more adventurous routes include a 16-mile loop from the visitor center at the north entrance to Kolb Farm in the park’s southern reaches. This hike includes ascents of both mountains.

Enjoy Scenic Skyline Views of Atlanta

Reaching the summit of Big Kennesaw is a relatively short, one-mile, trek from the visitor center (all uphill, one-way) that culminates in a scenic overlook of the Atlanta skyline in the distance and, on a clear day, Stone Mountain, some 28 miles away.

How to Get to Kennesaw Mountain

Kennesaw Mountain is located about 23 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta in Marietta, Ga.

The address is: Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive Kennesaw, Ga. 30152

Where to Park at Kennesaw Mountain

There are several parking areas, depending on what you want to explore. Head for the visitor center at 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive to hike or drive up the mountain, or talk to a ranger before setting out on foot. Just an hour away from the big city, LaGrange makes one of the best day trips from Atlanta! Back in the early 1800s, General Marquis de Lafayette was reminded of his estate in France when he saw the area’s rolling hills, so he named this area LaGrange!

LaGrange is home to the Great Wolf Lodge. A gigantic indoor water park hotel, this is a perfect place to drop off the kids for the day! Day passes start at $40. In addition to the water park, you can also enjoy mini-golf, a rock climbing wall, bowling, an arcade, a ropes course, and more!

While the kids are playing, head to the Nutwood Winery and sample homemade breads, Amish cheeses, and a variety of desserts to pair with their signature wines. Then you can hit the links at the Fields Golf Club, which also hosts festivals and live music!

LaGrange also has amazing restaurants, the Biblical History Center, and is home of the Azalea Storytelling Festival! Just outside of town you’ll find the Hills Dales Estate and the Wild Animal Safari Park where you can drive through and feed the hungry animals!

Just an hour away from the big city, Senoia makes one of the best day trips from Atlanta . There are two major reasons to head to Senoia: if you’re looking for a relaxing break from city life, or if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead!

Senoia illustrates just how wonderful a slower pace of life can be. Get away from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta at Merimac Lakes Park. Walking trails are open every day of the year and if you have a valid fishing license, you can take advantage of the fishing venues!

The town’s downtown area is filled with shops and antique stores, so you’ll always find something unique. Don’t forget to hit up the amazing restaurants like the Southern Country Steakhouse & Saloon. You can even tour the beautiful historic homes and leave feeling refreshed!

If you’re a Walking Dead fan, there’s even more for you to do here! Take one of the many tours available in Senoia like Dad’s Zombie Roadtrip and you’ll be able to see many of the show’s filming locations starting from Season 1. Afterward, grab a frightfully good cup of coffee at the Walking Dead Cafe!

The Walking Dead Cafe, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Senoia, one of the best day trips from Atlanta.

Atlanta Day Trips Between 1-2 Hours Away

Named for Christopher Columbus, Columbus makes one of the best day trips from Atlanta, only one and half hours away. Originally inhabited by the Creek Indians, it was an important shipping port and today is still popular because of its location along the Chattahoochee River.

Outdoor adventurers absolutely rave about Whitewater Adventures. USA Today named it the number one Man-Made Adventure in the World! You’ll glide down the river with your family along either a mild Lazy River or down wild and crazy Class V rapids.

You can also explore Uptown Columbus, the area’s entertainment district. Right along the Chattahoochee River, you can walk or bike the RiverWalk, a 22-mile paved trail that follows the river. The area also hosts Market Days on Broadway with a farmers market! And don’t forget about the free concert series!

Columbus is also a haven for art lovers! Along Broadway, you can take in the Sculpture Walk where you’ll see original art and sculptures. Each year, they add more pieces, so it’s never the same! You can also tour the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus for a taste of history.

The skyline of Columbus, Georgia.

If you’ve never been to Macon, then you’re missing out. One of the most quaint and charming towns in Georgia , this is one of the best day trips to take from Atlanta, especially for all things pink!

Among other things, Macon is home of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Held for two weeks every spring, the trees are lined with the pink petals and make the downtown area truly a beautiful wonder to behold. Even if you don’t visit during the festival, the trees themselves make the perfect Instagram photo op!

Macon’s downtown area is filled with activities and even hosts a two-day music crawl event every July. Bragg Jam allows you to see your favorite musicians while experiencing specials at the local restaurants and shops in the downtown area. During the holidays, the area is decorated with lights and just beautiful.

If you’re the outdoorsy type, then visit Amerson River Park. You can walk the paths by the Ocmulgee River. Watch the kayakers paddle by or hop in one for yourself and take in the sights! Then visit the Ocmulgee National Monument, hike the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, or pack a picnic to enjoy on Lake Tobesofkee!

A pathway in Macon, one of the best day trips from Atlanta, is covered by blossoming Cherry Blossoms.

Great Wolf Lodge

Let’s face it, they don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing. This is why the Great Wolf Lodge makes one of the best day trips from Atlanta. The perfect way to beat the unbearable summer heat? Hit up Georgia’s indoor water park, the Great Wolf Lodge.

At the Great Wolf Lodge, the water is always 84 degrees. Not too hot and not too cold! The water park has plenty of slides, pools, and activities for all ages. At the end of the day, you can even retire to a hotel room, or a charmingly themed Wolf Den for kids.

Enjoy simulated rapids on River Canyon Run. Leave the kids at Fort MacKenzie, a four-story water treehouse while you relax with the adults at Northwood Oasis. Or simply relax in Otter Run, the park’s lazy river.

When you need to dry off but you’re still not done having fun? Don’t worry, the Great Wolf Lodge still has plenty of fun and adventure for the whole family. Hit up the kid-friendly bowling alley! There’s also mini-golf, a ropes course, an arcade, a rock climbing wall, and even a Build-A-Bear workshop!

One of the best day trips from Atlanta is to visit Helen, just one and a half hours to the north of the city. Who says you have to get on a plane to feel like you’re in a different country? When you visit Helen, you’ll feel like you’re taking a vacation in Germany!

The Bavarian village of Helen in the Blue Ridge Mountains is not your ordinary town. Its charm comes from the architecture. Since 1969, city leaders have decided to model the town’s buildings on south-German architecture, creating a quaint Bavarian feeling when you walk through the neighborhoods.

Helen also boasts incredible hiking trails nearby. Of all of the trails, you’re going to want to see Anna Ruby Falls, one of the prettiest waterfalls in Georgia . You’ll find access via a paved trail to viewing platforms. You’ll be so close to the falls you’ll be cooled by the mist from the cascading water!

To get the most German experience, take a carriage ride downtown and visit the quaint shops and restaurants. You don’t want to miss out on the Biergartens either. You can’t go wrong visiting during one of Helen’s extraordinary community events like Oktoberfest or Christmas in Helen!

The town of Helen, GA takes a cue from German architecture to look like a Bavarian town.

Chattanooga, TN

Chattanooga is one of the great romantic getaways in TN . As a small city, it boasts the perfect combination of city life and nature escapes.

The Tennessee Riverpark in Chattanooga is a fantastic example of when city life meets nature. While the Riverpark is nestled in downtown Chattanooga, you’ll also get an up-close view of the Tennessee River, including the flying seabirds and bustling fishing piers.

Other than the Riverpark, Chattanooga also has the breathtaking Tennessee River Gorge, the underground waterfall known as Ruby Falls, and the Tennessee Aquarium. For those looking to experience more of the city side of Chattanooga, there is also the Creative Discovery Museum as well as the many restaurants and shops of downtown Chattanooga.

Southern Living Magazine voted  Blue Ridge, Georgia  one of the best mountain towns! Located just 90 minutes from Atlanta, it is perfect for a romantic getaway or a family mountain vacation. Don’t forget it when planning one of your day trips from Atlanta!

Known for its Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, wineries, and brewers as well as a more upscale dining and shopping destination. Take a ride on the railway or go trout fishing on the Toccoa River!

Blue Ridge is a great year-round town to visit for the outdoors where you can hike on the Appalachian trail, go tubing, visit a brewery or winery, enjoy a scenic drive or play golf! You can even try whitewater rafting or pick apples at a local orchard in the fall!

Amicalola Falls

Located near Ellijay, Georgia, this waterfall towers to a height of 730 feet and is definitely a sight to see while you’re in Georgia. The water spills over a cliff onto multiple layers of rock that create the beautiful whitewater visuals, making it one of the best day trips from Atlanta, only an hour and fifteen minutes away.

You can reach this Georgia waterfall from the Amicalola Falls Trail which is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The Amicalola Falls State Park is one of the most popular state parks in Georgia, and visitors frequent this park during any season.

From snow in the winter to leaves in autumn, or the bright sun of the summer, this waterfall is a top pick for many hikers. The hike is just over 2 miles round trip, but because of the elevation it is rated as a more difficult hike. Get ready to climb stairs, there are over 620 total!

Atlanta Day Trips Over 2 Hours

Providence ridge canyon state park.

Known as Georgia’s ‘little Grand Canyon’, Providence Canyon State Park is located in Stuart County and was formed by poor farming practises in the 1800s with some of the gullies going as deep as 150 feet. It’s unique scenery makes it one of the best day trips in Atlanta!

Just to the south of Columbus and only two hours away from Atlanta, the views are truly breathtaking here. The orange, pink, purple, and red of the soil provide a truly unique scene. And if you visit during July and August, you will see the rare Plumleaf Azalea in bloom.

There’s a number of different hiking options at this southern national park, whether you’re an experienced hiker looking for something more strenuous , or something easier with handicap access there will be something for you. You can even enjoy a picnic area above the canyon as well as a playground!

Oh, and dogs are also allowed on a 6 feet leash!

Providence Ridge Canyon State Park shimmers with its hues of oranges and reds.

If you follow golf, then this next entry on our list of best day trips from Atlanta should seem like a no-brainer. That’s because Augusta is home to a little golf tournament every year called The Masters! Okay, it’s not so little, but there’s more to do than golf here.

The Partridge Inn should certainly be on your list for romantic weekend getaways in Georgia . The mix of luxury and cozy is the perfect spot for a couple to get away from it all. You can enjoy the spacious balcony rooms to enjoy your morning coffee with a view, relax by the gorgeous pool, grab a drink at the rooftop bar, or enjoy a meal on the veranda.

Visit the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area and cruise down the canal in a boat tour! Then take a walk around the museum in the Discovery Center. If that’s not enough history for you, you can visit the Augusta Museum of History and then take a trolley tour.

For the more adventurous, rent a kayak and paddle the Augusta Canal yourself or explore Phinizy Swamp Nature Park! If golf isn’t your cup of tea, then head on over to SRP Park during baseball season and catch an Augusta Greenjackets game!

A bridge in Augusta covers an old, out of commission railroad track.

SAM Shortline

The Blue Ridge Railway has NOTHING on the SAM Shortline Train. One of the best day trips from Atlanta, you can visit Georgia’s only rolling state park! Taking a ride on this train is the best way to see the full beauty of the entire state.

You can board the train at Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele to enjoy a ride in an air-conditioned, vintage train car! The best part of the SAM Shortline Train is you have multiple options as far as destinations go! Choose between Plains, Americus, or Archery! Each one is rich in history!

The town of Plains is home of 39th President Jimmy Carter. Here you’ll see an inside look at his campaign and his life and get a deeper education in American politics. Archery is the site of President Carter’s boyhood home where you’ll see what rural life was like in the early 1900s!

The ride from Americus to Plains is the shortest option and perhaps the most scenic. However there’s so much to do that your time will fly and you might need to take a second trip! As you sink back in your comfy chair, you’ll enjoy a mix of romantic yesteryear with the excitement of today’s South!

No, we’re not talking about the Albany in New York! In Southwest Georgia, just under 3 hours away from the city, you’ll find the town of Albany, one of the best day trips from Atlanta with a multitude of family-friendly activities.

Everybody simply adores the Flint RiverQuarium. This is one of the few open-air aquariums in the world, focusing on the fish and plant life found in the Flint River. You can also get close to exotic animals at the zoo at Chehaw Park. Make sure to ask about Chloe!

Make sure to visit the Ray Charles Plaza in the center of the Flint River. A life-size sculpture of the soul musician is seated at a Baby Grand piano, resting on a rotating pedestal. You can enjoy a concert as his beloved melodies play at timed intervals while water flows over the pedestal and into a reflecting pool.

For even more fun, visit the All American Fun Park to enjoy two miniature golf courses, a 1/4 mile go-kart track, sixteen bowling lanes, and much more! There are also bumper boats, laser tag, and a roller coaster simulator!

Old stone structures add to the character of the Flint River in Albany, GA, one of the best day trips from Atlanta.

While Atlanta has so much to offer, sometimes you need to get out of the big city and explore. Georgia has a wealth of opportunities for the solo traveler with insatiable wanderlust or the family looking for a new adventure. Just remember that your next day trip from Atlanta is only a short car ride away!

15 Best Day Trips from Atlanta Georgia

These are the most popular day trips from Atlanta.

Growing up in ATL, we spent most of our time in the city, but just a short drive away, you can find yourself surrounded by lush, green forests and small historic towns. For many of these spots, we didn’t learn to appreciate them when we went as kids.

When we moved to LA, it always surprised me how many times I heard our SoCal friends mention how beautiful, lush, and green Georgia was. Funny how you learn to appreciate trees when you live in the desert, and sometimes you learn to appreciate the desert when you’re surrounded by trees.

You know what would be cool, if you included a map with all of the locations to help people see which way things are.

We’ll work on that!

Augusta, GA 2nd oldest city in Georgia! They have a beautiful Riverwalk and you can also take a day cruise down the Augusta Canal. Of course if you’re lucky enough to get on the list for The Masters, that’s a bucket lister! Also now there is the brand New Augusta Green Jackets Baseball Stadium, a minor league park, that sits on the water. Also, there are tons of locally owned shops & restaurants as well as art galleries, historical venues and beautiful homes!

Cave Spring, GA is a quaint little town about an hour away. Antiques, food, a Cherokee cabin, a cave, and a spring nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians. And even a pool in the shape of Georgia. There are also huge arts & crafts festivals in June & December.

The Tallulah Gorge is also a beautiful place to visit in GA. It ‘s the second largest hole next compared to the Grand Canyon.

Oh yeah! Thanks, Erica. We’ve been before, and it’s gorgeous out there. :) Maybe we will shuffle some things around when we put together a list for weekend trips.

When is the cherry festival in Macon??

Hi, Jaime. Great question! It changes a little every year probably depending on when they predict peak bloo to be. For next year, the festival dates are Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 25, 2018.

A great add to this would be Serenbe Farms!

Thanks for the rec, Erika. Will definitely have to check it out the next time we’re in GA for longer than a few days!

Awesome Small Towns Near Atlanta You’ll Love For Weekend Getaways

Awesome Small Towns Near Atlanta You’ll Love For Weekend Getaways

Being from the west coast, we don’t have a ton of cute, really old towns with beautiful storefronts and town squares. Doing a North Georgia road trip will take care of that for you, as it’s chalked full of cute towns very near Atlanta, many dating to the early 1800s.  We’ve found that a lot of our friends have family in North Georgia and when they visit they’re not sure just where to go for day trips and such, which is why we’re sharing our favorite small towns. These are great destinations for North Georgia day trips.

These cute Georgia towns are the perfect excuse to escape Atlanta for a weekend and even though they aren’t very far, they’re a world away. Be sure to stop into the small local farm stands and historic museums as you go, and remember, it’s okay to get a little distracted to make your getaway more enjoyable.

If you’ve got a favorite small town in northern Georgia that we’ve skipped over, leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to share more of the awesome places to explore here in the South!

North Georgia has many beautiful small towns, perfect for weekend getaways near Atlanta. From artsy Marietta to historic gold mines and waterfalls, these cute towns are perfect escapes from busy Atlanta.

Cute Neighborhoods of Cartersville, Georgia

Cartersville is our first small town of mention because it’s just what you’d expect to see in Georgia: cute brick storefronts, mellow community vibe, and incredibly well preserved historic homes. The neighborhoods directly around downtown, Main Street to be precise (I know, actual Main St) are easy to stroll through and if you’re lucky enough to visit at the right time, you can even participate in different events , from markets to craft fairs..

If you’re unfamiliar, a pilgrimage in Georgia is an event where historic homes open their doors to the public to visit. Many are still furnished with period appropriate pieces and art, but also many are active homes where real people live today. It’s pretty cool.  Also in Cartersville, Etowah Mounds historic site – we need to visit again before telling you all about it.

Dining tip :  check out 4 Way Lunch and Coconuts Ice Cream for a fun, kid friendly Georgia lunch. It’s our niece and nephew’s favorite spot!

Acworth for Louisiana flavors (and other great restaurants)

For as big as the town of Acworth is, its downtown area is quite small and concentrated on two small streets. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit!  Downtown Acworth is seeing a revival with all kinds of unique restaurants and shops. From kitschy decor shops to ice cream and local Georgia cuisine, it’s a great small town to visit. And they really know how to dress up the town for Christmas !

The best part of downtown Acworth though is having dinner at Henry’s Louisiana Grill . Beside fried chicken and a thousand varieties of biscuits, Georgia cuisine blends into the surrounding states and borrows a lot (in my opinion). Henry’s Louisiana Grill owns it and is crazy delicious. And fun. With all the dishes you might equate with New Orleans and some really creative twists, Henry’s is our new favorite Georgia experience.

And what’s really cool, Henry is a real guy and he’s super cool. He likes to check the vibe of his restaurant and make sure his guests are enjoying themselves. He’s just as unique and spicy as our dinners, only difference was that our dinners didn’t stand up and throw beads around our necks like a Mardi Gras parade. Really, I cannot wait to visit our family in Georgia again so we can go back to Henry’s.

Tip : hide as much of the spiced cornbread as you can in a backpack or something. They’ll keep bringing you more and you can live off of just that for days!

Kennesaw for Civil War History Near Atlanta

I’ll start with my disclaimer: a lot of Georgia still whitewashes the Civil War and slavery as just a bumpy chapter in American history, and that includes some museums and monuments. Yes, some sites very much own it, like Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield . With miles of hiking and running trails, it’s a wonderful place to visit for getting some quality outdoor time, but it’s also got a good, small museum about the Civil War. Yes, there are a good many museums about Civil War history and events, but this one is great for understanding and explaining battles and why the war in Georgia went the way it did.

Tip :  if you’re not into the historical aspects, the trail systems are excellent on their own, particularly in the summer when all you want is a little shade.

Note : despite the beautiful lawn and ample open space, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield is not a place for a sprawling picnic. There are designated picnic tables, but all across North Georgia, and everywhere else, picnicking on battlefield sites is either prohibited or discouraged.

Another Civil War site to visit in Kennesaw is the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History . It’s actually pretty neat with its kid-friendly displays and exhibits. The highlight is the General, a historic locomotive engine. If you’re into trains (or have a kid that is) this is a great stop to add to your North Georgia road trip. There is also a fair amount of outdoor space that’s set up like an old town, so it’s easy to get the kids to burn off energy before going through the museum.

Note : this is one of the places that has some whitewashing of the Civil War, so use your discretion when reading the exhibit signs with kids. Example: the statue of Nathan Bedford Forest, a founding member of the KKK…

An afternoon in Artsy Marietta

We love Marietta. It’s set up so perfectly around its town square and is great to explore with kids. The town is artsy and quiet, and is very near Atlanta. With several unique cafes and restaurants, you can visit any time of day for a quiet stroll and shopping. We prefer to visit in the afternoon so the kids can enjoy the play structure in the square. It is actually a miniature version of the General locomotive (see above).

Other great things about downtown Marietta are the toy and magic shops, the vintage theater and the local coffee roaster. What’s not to love?

Remember how above I mentioned doing an event or checking out the historic homes in Cartersville? Marietta does a pilgrimage and it’s actually a large, ticketed event to be able to visit some of the beautiful houses. This historic home tour is done in partnership with the visitors bureau in town, so if you’re interested, check out their website for upcoming Marietta pilgrimage dates.

Tip: if you’re making a North Georgia road trip in order of the small towns we’re sharing, between Marietta and the next one, Dahlonega, you’ll find Blue Ridge, GA . It’s adorable and worth checking out if you have the time!

Dahlonega: the North Georgia Gold Rush town

What an adorable place! Founded in the early 1800s, Dahlonega is a must-stop spot on a North Georgia road trip. Like Marietta, it’s quaint with a great town square. The buildings have really stood the test of time and are a great backdrop if you just have to spend a day playing Instagrammer.

We really enjoyed lunch at the old time saloon, the Crimson Moon, where they feature local bands each night. Following some delicious Georgia meatloaf, a walk around the town brought us to the gold rush museum in the center of the square. This isn’t a great stop for kids unless they’re very into history, as it’s 90% reading and 10% engagement/video. Perfect for history-hungry adults though!

The highlight in Dahlonega for us was actually visiting a mine. We went to the Crisson Mine to do some gold panning and look for gems, and we totally struck it big. The mine crew was great with the kids helping them swirl and find gold, and then we all had a blast doing a scavenger hunt for gems. We left with emeralds, citrine, garnets and more. Bonus for us: outside was a whole setup showing how mining works with displays, working exhibits and tons of mining equipment.

Tip : if you have older kids or it’s just brave adults, there is another mine, the Consolidated Gold Mine , that you can actually tour and go 200 feet down into the earth, kind of like we did in Breckenridge . It’s pretty cool if you’re cool with small dark tunnels.

Picturesque Alpine Helen: a taste of Bavaria in Georgia

In Washington we have the adorable town of Leavenworth . In California they have Solvang (one of the cutest Christmas towns in Cali ) for getting into the European spirit. In Georgia it’s all about Helen. Alpine Helen is a themed town set at the edge of the Appalachian / Blue Ridge Mountains. The Chattahoochee River winds through from start to finish and it’s just gorgeous. All around the town are awesome outdoor experiences, including river tubing, but the town itself is an attraction.

Polka music pumping and gingerbread house style storefronts, our kids thought Helen was a hoot . Of course the town runs on tourism, but it really owns it which makes the campiness wonderfully fun. And they keep Christmas up way past the holiday season, so it’s got that going for it too.

Highlights in Helen for our family included authentic German lunch of sausages, sauerkraut and bacon/dough pinwheels; watching glass blowers hard at work; visiting Charlemagne’s Kingdom aka the model train hall; and just taking in the town. If you’re visiting Atlanta or doing a road trip, no matter the time of year, just go visit Helen and enjoy the spectacle of it all.

Clarksville, GA for BBQ and relaxation

We didn’t take the last train to Clarksville , but we drove as part of our North Georgia road trip. Laid out similarly to Dahlonega, Clarksville is built around a square and has been able to maintain it’s small town southern charm. It’s actually really turned itself into a foodie destination.

Mixed into the artisan shops and cafes, Georgia cuisine has made its home around the square. Local favorites include the Copperpot, the Attic, and Harvest Habersham. Our favorite was actually not here on the square though…

Hawg Wild BBQ and Catfish House was the winner for us. Our kids fell in love with smokey pulled pork when we visited Estes Park , Colorado and since then, it’s become a favorite for them. When you can sell kids on plain meat and bread without needing anything else, you know you’ve mastered it. I personally loved the brisket. True, I had to dissect the fat off it, but I’m so glad they cooked it the way they did because the rich flavor was incredible.

Beyond food, Clarksville is also home to golfing and a really wonderful resort. We planned a few days at the Apple Mountain Club Vacation Resort and didn’t want to leave. The resort is part of Holiday Inn’s timeshare brand ( and you know that we love and utilize timeshares ) and it’s perfect for families. We took full advantage of the mini golf, recreation hall, cafe, hot tub, movie check-out and more. If it was summer, we would’ve been all about the pool, onsite playground, basketball, BBQs, oversized chess and more. We’ll actually be returning in the summer because it’s awesome.

Note : there are also horse stables for trail rides and horse experiences, but they do have age requirements for riding (8 years and up). We didn’t ride this trip, but next time!

Skidaway Island State Park

Distance from Savannah: 15 miles

Drive time: Approximately 25 minutes

Skidaway Island State Park is a great option for a day trip from Savannah. Just a short drive from downtown Savannah, the park offers a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The park is home to a variety of ecosystems, including salt marshes and maritime forests. You may spot a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat including deer, fiddler crabs, and egrets.

There are also several miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking, or birdwatching. The park is also a great place for picnicking. So whether you’re looking to explore nature or just relax in a beautiful setting, Skidaway Island State Park is worth a visit.

If you want to make an overnight or weekend getaway out of your trip, you can enjoy camping among the beautiful live oaks and Spanish moss.

Historic Tybee Island Light Station near Savannah, Georgia

Tybee Island

Distance from Savannah:  18 miles

Drive time:  Approximately 20-30 minutes

Easily the most popular day trip from Savannah, Tybee Island’s most famous site is probably its light station, the oldest and tallest in Georgia. The 2.5-mile-long barrier island’s location at the mouth of the Savannah River also made it especially important as a military position.

Although it’s essentially “next door” to Savannah, you could easily spend an entire day exploring Tybee Island.

Taking in the natural beauty of Tybee Island is a great way to spend the day. It’s a popular spot for bird watching, sea kayaking, dolphin spotting, biking, fishing and more. The  Light Station Museum admission is reasonably priced. (They are closed on Tuesdays.)

To explore the island, you can of course drive yourself there, or you could book a sightseeing tour  like this one  that includes a dolphin-watching cruise.

Or perhaps just enjoy a day relaxing on a  Tybee Island beach  complete with beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers stocked with ice.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Distance from Savannah:  14 miles

Drive time:  Approximately 25 minutes

Also quite close to the historic center of Savannah,  Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on Cockspur Island. Fort Pulaski is operated by the National Park Service and is open seven days a week year-round, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Days.

The fort was built to protect the Port of Savannah not long before the American Civil War broke out in 1861.

The fort was made mostly of brick (millions and millions of bricks) and was soon rendered obsolete when the Union Army used Fort Pulaski as the site for the testing of their new rifled cannons.

Fort Pulaski fell to the Union Army in less than two days. The fort was then used by the Union Army as a prisoner-of-war camp.

The Fort Pulaski National Monument includes the fort, most of Cockspur Island as well as McQueens Island. The site includes walking trails, and fishing is allowed on the Savannah River. The Visitor Center includes exhibits about the fort’s construction and the Civil War battle.

Fort McAllister State Park

Distance from Savannah:  30 miles

Drive time:  40 minutes

Continuing on the Civil War historical site theme, south of Savannah you’ll find  Fort McAllister State Park on the banks of the Ogeechee River. Now don’t dismiss this park out of hand even if you’ve been to both Fort Sumter in South Carolina and Fort Pulaski (see above), because  these Confederate fortifications are actually earthworks and some of the best-preserved.

The fort withstood multiple naval attacks but eventually fell to General Sherman on his March to the Sea. Fort McAllister was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

The 1700-acre park includes picnic shelters, a museum, a gift shop, boat ramps, a dock, a fishing pier, and a playground. Those who want to do more than a day trip here can choose from cottage or campsite accommodations.

There are about 4 miles of trails for hiking, there are seasonally available kayak, paddleboard, and canoe rentals, bike rentals, and educational programs.

There is a small fee for parking in addition to the historical site entrance fee.

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

More fun things to do in and around Savannah, Georgia

Not far outside the historic center of Savannah, you’ll find two key historical sites. With  this half-day tour ,  you’ll get to see Bonaventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Plantation.

Consider putting yourself in the hands of an expert tour guide.  Enjoy a private tour   of the Savannah historic district, Tybee Island,  and  Fort Pulaski National Monument all in one epic tour. Comes with free 24-hour cancellation and includes transportation.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Distance from Savannah:  34 miles

Drive time:  45 minutes

Hilton Head Island is one of my  favorite  places, and honestly, it deserves more time than just a day trip from Savannah; however, if all you have is a day then we can make it work.

Just so you understand how awesome Hilton Head is, you don’t have to take my word for it.  Travel + Leisure  named Hilton Head Island the BEST island in the continental United States for three consecutive years. I quite agree.

Beach on Hilton Head Island South Carolina at Dawn

Try Coligny Beach Park for public beach access. Coligny Beach is also a  designated swim area . There’s free parking nearby and some fun shopping as well. The iconic  Harbour Town Lighthouse is also a popular stop.

You’ll also find plenty of other things to do like biking on the beach or along the miles of recreational paths and of course eating some great Southern food. If you get to Hilton Head for breakfast, make a stop at  Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café . It’s popular with locals, and they have good gluten-free options.

We recommend that you enjoy lunch or dinner at  A Lowcountry Backyard to try their wonderful food. They’re famous for their shrimp and grits and of course, the Lowcountry boil. When we were there, they gladly helped hubby find something delicious and gluten-free to eat, and they have good vegetarian options too. They don’t take reservations, so make sure you get there early.

Jekyll Island

Distance from Savannah: 95 miles

Drive time: 1 hour, 40 minutes

Jekyll Island is one of the “Golden Isles” barrier islands off the coast of Georgia that include St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sapelo Island, Blackbeard Island, plus Historic Darien and Historic Brunswick.

Jekyll Island is a popular spot for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities for biking, golf, long walks on the beach, touring historic homes, and more. Don’t miss Driftwood Beach on the north end of the island.

The island is also home to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center , which offers educational programs about these creatures and works to rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured turtles.

The center is open to the public. Visitors can take a “behind the scenes” tour of the center, watch the turtles being cared for, and learn about the efforts to protect these animals.

Charleston, South Carolina

Fountain with a large pineapple on top in waterfront park in Charleston, South Carolina.

Distance from Savannah:  108 miles

Drive time:  2 hours

Folks, if you like Savannah, you’ll  love Charleston . In my opinion, it has all the same kinds of things to do that Savannah offers plus more. Although I would recommend you spend at least a  weekend in Charleston , it is also very doable to make a Charleston day trip from Savannah.

Charleston is full of wonderful historical sites, like the historic Aiken-Rhett House, beautiful architecture, lovely Waterfront Park (and its famous Pineapple Fountain), the Battery, the Historic Market, and of course amazing food.

We love getting lunch at  Fleet Landing  right on the water. And make a point to stop in at  Carmella’s Dessert Bar  for coffee or a treat. You’ll love it.

For more details, check out our post about how to spend   one day in Charleston .  For more about why we love Charleston, read our  Charleston vs Savannah post.

Cumberland Island National Seashore

Distance from Savannah: 115 miles to Visitor Center

Drive time: Approximately 2 hours, plus the ferry ride

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for some amazing sandy beaches. The island has a rich history and is perfect for a day trip or even an overnight camping excursion.

Access to the Seashore is by ferry or private boat. Plan to make your ferry reservations in advance.

If you’re looking for a place to hike, bike, camp, birdwatch, or beach comb, look no further. With over 50 miles of nature trails and roads as well as 18 miles of beaches available to explore, there’s something here for everyone.

There are no food vendors at the Seashore, so plan to bring with you (and pack back out) whatever you will need for the day.

Folly Beach

Distance from Savannah:  115 miles

Folly Beach is quite close to Charleston, so if you’re feeling up to it, you could visit Folly and pop over to Charleston on one super-epic day trip.

Folly Beach is a 12-square-mile barrier island known as a popular destination for kayak rentals, fishing, and such. You can learn how to surf or try a  stand-up paddleboard eco tour like this one .

In Folly Beach you’ll also find “The Porgy House” home to the writers of the novel and play  Porgy . The Gershwin Brothers also wrote their opera  Porgy and Bess  in Folly Beach. The story is set in Charleston.

Amelia Island, Florida

Distance from Savannah:  128 miles

Drive time : 2 hours

A popular beach vacation destination in Florida, Amelia Island boasts 13 miles of beaches . It’s located in Northeast Florida and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, Nassau Sound, and Cumberland Sound.

In 2020, Travel + Leisure put Amelia Island at number 6 on its list of the top 15 islands in the United States. Conde Nast also named Amelia Island one of the best islands in the U.S. in its Reader’s Choice awards.  Southern Living  also named it one of the 10 most romantic destinations in Florida.

Jacksonville, Florida

The Historic Friendship Fountain on the St. Johns River against the Jacksonville, Florida skyline

Distance from Savannah:  141 miles

Drive time:  2 hours, 10 minutes

It’s the largest city by landmass in the United States. Jacksonville also claims to have the largest urban park system and the most shoreline of any city in Florida. It’s also the most populous city in the Southeast and is only about a 2-hour drive from Savannah, which makes it a great option for a city day trip.

Popular sites and attractions in “Jax” include the  Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens , Friendship Fountain, the Museum of Science and History, and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

Enjoy a picturesque River Walk stroll along the St. Johns River, try the St. Johns River Taxi, or check out some of their 22 miles of beaches.

My fellow National Park Service site enthusiasts will likely want to spend some time at  Fort Caroline National Memorial , which memorializes the failed French colonial presence in Florida in the 16th century. Like  Kingsley Plantation , it’s part of the  Timucuan Ecological & Historical Preserve .

Augusta, Georgia

Augusta, Georgia, USA downtown scene at River Walk.

Distance from Savannah:  130 miles

Drive time:  2.5 hours

Although it’s best known for hosting  The Masters golf tournament , Augusta, Georgia, is also a lovely town that is just begging to be explored. Fortunately, its walkable historic downtown and Riverwalk area make that easy to do.

The  Augusta Riverwalk  features a children’s playground, gardens, the Jessye Norman Amphitheater, and the Augusta Saturday Market at the River (closed in winter).

Top things to do in Augusta include the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, the Augusta Museum of History, the Morris Museum of Art, Woodrow Wilson’s boyhood home, popular restaurants, shopping, and more.

Fun facts: Augusta was founded by James Oglethorpe (who was also the founder of Savannah) and it was named for Princess Augusta of Wales.

And in case you were wondering,  no you cannot tour Augusta National . It is totally closed and super duper private. Strictly members only. Seriously. The only time it’s open to the public is during The Masters and even then only those with tickets are allowed in.

Congaree National Park

Entrance Sign in Congaree National Park in South Carolina

Distance from Savannah:  150 miles

You’ll find Congaree National Park in Hopkins, South Carolina (near Columbia). It’s the only National Park in South Carolina, and sadly also one of the least visited. Congaree is also a UNESCO biosphere reserve and offers hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and bird watching.

The Park preserves the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States, according to the  National Park Service .

Be warned. Congaree is swampy and famous (infamous?) for its mosquitoes. Protect yourself accordingly. You can check with the Park before your trip to find out what the mosquito levels are before you make the drive from Savannah.

You may have seen photos of the Congaree “Mosquito Meter.” This is not a thing. Well, I mean it exists, but the Park doesn’t use it as a daily indicator of mosquito levels. It’s completely unscientific, and they’ve even described it as a prop for photos. The important takeaway here is that you should be aware of the mosquitoes before you visit.

Hiking Congaree National Park is easy and enjoyable.

The most popular walk or hike in Congaree is probably the Boardwalk Trail. The boardwalk path makes the 2.6-mile loop trail accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Other easy hikes include Bluff Trail, Sims Trail, Bates Ferry Trail, Longleaf Trail, and Spur Trail.

Former Girl Scout leader sentenced for child molestation

Former girl scout leader's child molestation sentence.

A former Kennesaw Girl Scout leader is sentenced to prison for aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. A Cobb County jury found Allison Wean guilty on all counts Friday afternoon. The victim was a member of her Girl Scout troop.

KENNESAW, Ga. - Jurors deliberated for a little over 3 hours before finding Allison Wean, a former girl scout leader, guilty of sexually abusing a member of her troop.

There was a heavy law enforcement presence in the courtroom as a jury foreman delivered the verdict Friday.

Wean was convicted of child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, and aggravated child molestation.

The now 22-year-old victim took the witness stand during the trial, testifying that the sexual abuse started when she was 12 years old.

Wean was a Girl Scout leader in Kennesaw when the crimes occurred.

FOX 5 talked to a person who is close to the victim’s family by phone as jury deliberations got underway.

The woman told FOX 5 that Wean was a trusted family friend who groomed the victim and engaged in a sexual relationship with the girl between 2014 and 2018.

The victim went to the police with the shocking allegations in 2020.

Wean was sentenced to 25 years in prison.  She faces similar charges in South Carolina for alleged crimes committed against the same victim while visiting that state
