Watch Spotting A Most Unexpected Swiss Watch Brand Cameo In 'Deadpool 2' (Mild Spoilers)

Proving once again the infinite adaptability and appeal of fine watchmaking, in all possible universes..

deadpool 2 cable time travel watch

Well, here in the USA we're back from our long Memorial Day weekend, during which by tradition, hamburgers, booze of all descriptions, and loud, violent blockbuster movies are all three avidly consumed. I happened to catch Deadpool 2 with the fam (we laughed, we cried, it was better than Cats ) and despite the much-discussed risk of "superhero burnout" you might have heard from some killjoys out there, it was in its irreverent levity a fine antidote to the operatic sturm und drang of Infinity War (during which we laughed, we cried, etc. and so forth).

The plot involves, in addition to a body count which accumulates in all sorts of gleefully inventive ways, time travel, and I sat up in my seat as if pin-stuck during a closeup of the time machine. Strapped to the wrist of Cable – a cybernetic supersoldier from the future, headed back to roughly our time in order to right a very egregious wrong – is a time machine in the form of a watch-like object, which is set to the desired point in time with a rotating bezel that seems to control an arrangement of planetary gears inside. On the face of the watch is the logo of none other than Carl F. Bucherer.

deadpool 2 cable time travel watch

As it turns out, the film's director, David Leitch, has been a CFB brand ambassador since 2013, which is how the company got into the film, but it wasn't really an official product placement (Carl F. Bucherer isn't in the time machine business, at least not yet). As this was something of a sub rosa Easter egg for sharp-eyed watch enthusiasts, there are no official pictures, but aside from the movie, you can see the watch/time machine very briefly in some of the YouTube coverage of the movie's (in)famous post-credit sequences. In the one below, by Erik Voss, you can see it at about 4:37 (on edge; it looks rather like a Seiko Tuna) and again, close up, at about 5:23. Please note that there are (obvs) major spoilers in the video!

At least in the Deadpool 2 universe, of course, this has certain implications. Time machines, after all, are a variation on the classic "Grandfather Paradox" of time travel, which asks, "What would happen if you went back in time and killed your own grandfather?" A time machine, under one theory regarding this paradox, implies the preservation, as fixed points in time, of any events necessary for the existence of the time machine – otherwise, you wouldn't be able to time-travel in the first place. This in turn implies that even in the grim darkness of the far future, Carl F. Bucherer has survived, and by extension, at least part of the Swiss watch industry, and by extension, Switzerland (huzzars). It also implies, given the amount of energy required to create a stable Einstein-Rosen wormhole, that they've finally solved that pesky battery problem. And naturally, we can infer that the Swiss solution to the impending Smartwatch Crisis was to get into the time travel business. Per ardua ad astra.

Who is Deadpool 2's Cable? Here's everything you need to know

The most convoluted backstory in comics, explained.

deadpool 2 cable time travel watch

Who is this guy?

Deadpool 2 features Josh Brolin as Cable, a super soldier who spends most of his time shooting and scowling. The movie hints at Cable's complex backstory but mostly keeps things simple. It establishes him as a tragic time traveler with a metal arm and a light-up laser eye.

If you've just come out of Deadpool 2 wondering why Cable has any of that going on, you may want to sit down. The answers are going to be more than a little complicated. And no, they aren't covered by Deadpool's post-credit scenes .

And yes, there will be some spoilers for Deadpool 2 here. Proceed with caution!

Cable's first comics appearance came in New Mutants No. 87 in 1990. As you can see , he looks pretty familiar, if a little overly '90s. Cable, with his military mindset, led the New Mutants against a number of foes before reforming the New Mutants into X-Force . If you're an X-Men fan, you probably remember the intro arc , with Cable and the team duking it out against Juggernaut alongside Spider-Man. Deadpool 2 actually contains a few callbacks to those early issues, especially during the climactic fight with Juggernaut.

Over those early years, Cable was slowly revealed to be a time traveler who was trying to stop his arch-nemesis Stryfe. (Yes, that's a real villain moniker.) That would be the last time Cable's backstory made any sense, with his solo series revealing in 1993 that he was Nathan Christopher Summers.

deadpool 2 cable time travel watch

Sound familiar? That's because the Summers family is all over the X-Men universe. Scott Summers is better known as frequent (and currently dead) X-Men leader Cyclops. Scott's brother, Alex Summers, goes by Havoc, can also shoot beams and is sometimes an X-Man. Their third brother, Gabriel, was incubated in space and took over the Shi'ar Empire at one point. Their dad is a space pirate who goes by the name Corsair.

Confused yet? It gets better. Cable is actually Cyclops' son, the product of a relationship with Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey, who at one point was known as the Goblin Queen. It was the '80s, and goblins were all the rage. Just look at Labyrinth.

Soon after his birth, Cable was captured by frequent X-Men villain Apocalypse and infected with the techno-organic virus. The virus, which would turn Cable into a human-machine hybrid that has no consistent definition , couldn't be solved by the methods of the time, so a woman from an alternate future whisked him into her timeline and saved his life.

Never mind that the woman who saved him is an alternate version of his half-sister Rachel. That's a whole different mess.

Rachel cloned Cable just so she could have a backup (seriously, there are so many clones in the X-Men universe), but that clone was abducted by followers of Apocalypse. That clone, if you haven't already guessed, became Stryfe. Meaning that yes, Cable's arch-nemesis is a  pointier-looking clone of himself.

But don't worry about Cable missing his parents. Or at least his dad. Cyclops and the real Jean Grey had their minds transported into Cable's future, where they assumed the identities of Slym and Redd and raised him for a while.

Cable took after his mom and was a powerful psychic, and he eventually would use his powers to prevent the techno-organic virus from killing him. It would mean that a large portion of his incredible powers would be kept at bay by this effort, but what's cooler than someone fighting at only a fraction of their full strength?

If you're wondering why Cable bothered to come to the past if things were kind of OK 2,000 years in the future, blame Stryfe. He traveled back in time. Cable followed and chased his rival even before he was technically ever born. He also took on some mercenary work because why not add that to the mix?

As for Deadpool, he and Cable actually had their own 50-issue series that started in 2004, pitting the preposterous Merc With a Mouth against the stoic Cable before they ended up becoming friends and allies.

deadpool-cable

Why can't they just get along?

Over the course of the series, Cable tries to save the world by being kind of a supervillain, fights the Silver Surfer, loses his powers, is killed by Deadpool, is discovered in an alternate timeline as a baby and re-aged to adulthood. And that's just the first half of the series run, so there's plenty of source material the Deadpool movie franchise can pull upon for future entries after Cable makes the decision at the end of Deadpool 2 not to return to his future.

Since a seven-hour Cable prequel would be a bit much, Deadpool 2 avoids pretty much all of this nightmarish backstory (and that's not even all of it), though the basics remain the same. Cable demonstrates psychic ability, appears to still be infected by the techno-organic virus and comes from the future. In a reference to a story arc in which he takes a presumed "Mutant Messiah" into the future, Cable's daughter in Deadpool 2 is named Hope, which was the name he gave to said messiah in the future.

Hope in the comics didn't end up being anyone's messiah, though, after the Phoenix Force was interrupted on its journey to Earth by Tony Stark and broken into multiple parts before combining with several other members of the X-Men and... wait, where are you going? There's so much more X-Men lore to explore! Come back! It starts making sense around the time they start fighting the Inhumans over the Terrigen Mist, I swear!

Best movies coming out summer 2018

deadpool 2 cable time travel watch

Deadpool 2 kills all expectations, if you ignore the first half : The movie takes too long to get to its best meta jokes and gleeful violence, but once it does, it proves to be a worthy sequel.

Deadpool 2 post-credits scene(s), explained : There are five different Deadpool 2 post-credits scenes and they're all wonderful. Here's what they mean and signal.

‘Deadpool 2’: The Amazing Post-Credits Scene, Explained

Don’t leave when the movie ends.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool 2 .

The post-credits scene for Deadpool 2 is sort of the perfect encapsulation of the Deadpool franchise thus far. It takes everything serious, chucks it out the window, and proceeds to poke fun at anything and everything. And hey, if you introduce the concept of time travel into a Deadpool movie, what do you expect to happen in the Deadpool 2 after credits scene?

In the movie proper, we’re told that Cable’s time-travel device only allows him two trips, one to reach our present and one to return home. He decides to sacrifice his return trip home in order to save Deadpool, which in turn stops Russell from going bad and murdering Cable’s family in the future. Cable decides it’s better for him to stick around in our time anyway and see if he can make a better future for his family.

Cut to the post credits scene and Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio have repaired the time travel device so that it gives the user infinite jumps through time. Deadpool takes it and proceeds to right past wrongs. He saves Vanessa; he goes back to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and kills Weapon XI by pumping him full of bullets; he saves Peter; and he shoots Ryan Reynolds in the head before he can agree to do the Green Lantern movie.

The Vanessa thing you kind of have to take as a joke otherwise the rest of the movie makes no sense. If Vanessa doesn’t die, then Deadpool doesn’t go on his journey that leads him to becoming a better person and caring for other people. Undoing Vanessa’s death undoes the movie (I’m not saying fridge-ing Vanessa was a good idea, and I think it’s kind of weak that the movie doesn’t mock a tired trope, but nevertheless it’s the inciting event), so I would expect her to remain dead.

Her death also falls in line with the other time travel events. X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern still exist no matter how badly Deadpool/Ryan Reynolds would wish otherwise. Vanessa is still dead even though Wade Wilson would go back in time and save her if he could. Don’t expect the post-credits scene to have an actual impact on the plot of X-Force and/or Deadpool 3 . And as for Peter, well, I’m pretty sure audiences wouldn’t mind if future films cheated a bit and brought back sugarbear.

Cable Explained: The Importance of Deadpool 2's Time-Traveling Mutant

We take a look at why Cable, the X-Men's resident time traveler, is so crucial to Fox's growing franchise.

Ryan Reynolds dropped a bombshell in the after-credits scene of 2016’s “Deadpool” when he named-dropped the time-traveling mutant Cable, teasing the silver-haired mutant's inclusion in the film’s sequel.

Of course, for longtime fans of the characters, it only made sense. After all, the duo has shared many adventures together since their dual debut in the pages of Marvel Comics’ “New Mutants” #86, all the way back in 1990. Now, with "Deadpool 2" scheduled for a 2018 release, reports have begun to spring up linking actors like Michael Shannon (“Man of Steel”) and David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) for the role of Cable.

But while Cable has ties to Wade Wilson, unless you were a fan of the X-Men comics in the '90s and early 2000s, you may be wondering why there's so much excitement over him making the move to the big screen. Much like Deadpool, Cable has starred in multiple storylines, and has important connections to a wide range of characters. He came along during a time period in comics filled with extra-large pouches, trench coats, blaster guns and polybagged covers. Excess ruled the comic book shelves, and no one reflected this trend greater than Cable. Because of that, it can be difficult to pinpoint a single attribute that makes the mutant resonate with fans when he has connections to some of the most popular X-Men.

RELATED:  Deadpool 2: Rob Liefeld Wants Russell Crowe to Read for Cable

He is, however, massively important, and rather popular. Now, ahead of his official casting, we examine why actors are lining up to play the militant mutant, and how Cable’s primed to captivate movie audiences when “Deadpool 2” arrives in theaters.

If Wolverine Is Gone, Who Will Protect the Next Generation of Mutant?

It's pretty much a given that Wolverine will go down as the most popular member of the X-Men in the team’s long history. His fandom has transcended comics to include three solo films (including the recently released “Logan”), appearances in six “X-Men” movies, and hundreds of animated adventures. In short, the fans love them some James Howlett.

Many of the qualities people love about Wolverine apply to Cable as well. When Cable was introduced, he had a secret past and an air of mystery about him. Over time, he would run into different characters in the X-universe and it would be revealed that Cable had a connection to them. These were little seeds planted to establish Cable’s importance throughout the publishing line, all without giving clear answers. Having an “air of mystery” as a hero makes you compelling, which in turn causes readers to want to know more and more about you. Plus, more revelations lead to even more mysteries.

Another similarity between the two mutants, aside from neither one of them hesitating to kill when necessary, is they both have had a number of clones and offspring. Bad guys wouldn’t waste their time cloning the heroes if they weren’t important characters, right? Wolverine has a clone named X-23 (played by Dafne Keen in “Logan”) and a son named Daken. Cable and his clone Stryfe were featured in one of the most crucial X-Men crossovers of the early 1990s, “X-Cutioner’s Song.” He has an alternate version of himself that came to prominence in “Age of Apocalypse." This character, Nate Grey, proved popular enough to star in his own ongoing series for a time. Finally, Cable had a son named Tyler and adoptive daughter named Hope, the latter of which has been teased as another possible "Deadpool 2" cast member.

With Wolverine apparently gone from Fox's X-Universe for the time being, it needs a new no-nonsense, combat-ready, grizzled character for its younger mutants to look up to and watch over them. Cable is exactly such a mutant.

Fox's X-Universe Needs Its Own Nick Fury

Another reason Cable is so cool is you can drop him into any type of X-Men story, and he will emerge as a central figure. We’ve seen Cable as a mutant messiah, a time-traveling warrior, and the “Chosen One” prophesied to defeat no less a major X-villain than Apocalypse. Comic book creators have proven they can add Cable to any story they're attempting to tell, and he not only works, he tends to add a layer of additional drama to it. Or, in the case of his team-ups with Deadpool, he can be the perfect straight man.

RELATED: Deadpool 2: Kerry Washington Weighs In On Domino Rumor

If Fox continues to encourage its directors to think outside the box, there are many opportunities to tell stories starring Cable that embrace and expand on the legacy of the X-Men. He can time-jump to any period in the X-Men timeline, or set out to exterminate threats to mutants across the globe. The addition of Cable to the X-Universe could, in a sense, mirror the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offering a storytelling glue to bind together seemingly disparate adventures as Fox continues to build a massive, cohesive mutant-populated world.

A Complicated Family Life Equals Unlimited Storytelling Potential

It may involve flexing some creative muscles to properly explain Cable’s origin on the big screen, but it's a crucial part of the mutant’s history. Nathan Summers is the offspring of X-Men leader Cyclops and Jean Grey clone Madelyn Pryor. When he was injected with a techno-organic virus as a baby, he was sent to the future to be cured. There, he grew up under the teachings of the Askani Son, which turned out to be future projections of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Yes, it's a long, complicated story, but one that could be summarized fairly concisely in a movie.

As a grown man and seasoned warrior, Cable ventured to the past where he encountered the New Mutants, and the rest is literally history. A film chronicling the young adventures of Cable alone is worthy of a movie pitch, and a film trilogy starting with his birth and the evil machinations of Madelyn Pryor, infection with the TO virus and subsequent battle between the X-Men and Apocalypse’s Dark Riders could be, frankly, epic . These would be a unique set of films that can begin once the character has already made his big screen debut and would involve the craziest comic book origin story ever told on film.

For the time being, we’ll have to wait and see how Fox brings Cable to life in “Deadpool 2” when it arrives in theaters in 2018. Here's hoping that's just the tip of the iceberg, and the studio has plans to fully exploit Nathan Summers' full potential as a cornerstone of its ever-growing X-Universe.

Deadpool 2's time travel makes no sense... but we're going to try and explain it.

Deadpool 2 introduces time travel and, like much of the X-Men universe, it makes no sense. But we're going to try our best to make sense of it all!

WARNING: Spoilers for  Deadpool 2 .

Deadpool 2 's time travel makes no sense. It does not. It can not. However, today we're going to try to do the impossible and explain how exactly the plot of the movie works.

From the moment Cable was confirmed for Deadpool 2 , it was clear the film would be using time travel. Born Nathan Summers, Cable is the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey who is transported to the future as a child to save his life before returning as an adult. While it was repeatedly stated by the filmmakers they wouldn't be going into all of  that , the fact remains he's come back from the future on a mission - in this case, to kill the murderer of his wife and daughter when he was still a child.

Related:  Deadpool 2 Has ANOTHER A-List Cameo (You Totally Missed)

Time travel in movies has two fundamental, unavoidable hurdles. The first is that constructing a tight set of rules for the method of travel and what can/can't be changed in the past, and not subsequently breaking them is incredibly difficult; the only noteworthy examples that do this without any major plot holes are The Terminator , Looper and Primer (the latter of which is essentially an experiment in this theory). The second task is conveying everything correctly to the audience so they don't wind up applying another thought process; expecting the timeline to be changed instantaneously a la Back to the Future in an irreversible loop story, for example.

Deadpool 2 breaks both of these conditions as easy as the eponymous anti-hero breaks bones (others or his own): how it mechanically works is never properly explained and the movie switches up how the timelines change halfway through. It's a mixture of The Terminator 's simple timeline rewrite along with Back to the Future 's in-the-moment changes, but also has physical and mental forms of actual travel (for the latter, think Groundhog Day ) that introduce multiple perceived timelines and fragmentation . Head hurting? It's going to get worse.

But first, a note. Obviously, while time travel is used in Deadpool 2 as a key plot instigator, the mechanics of it are purposely vague and contradictory because the needs of the story and jokes take precedent; by design it can not make sense. However, as we're dealing with something that will undoubtedly be returned to in future movies, it warrants exploration. Buckle up.

Deadpool 2's Time Travel Explained (Kinda)

The only way to explain Deadpool 2's time travel in a way that's remotely satisfying is to go into the theory of multiple timelines that coexist and are created by actions in previous continuities.

Related:  The Very Specific Movies You Need To See To Fully Understand Deadpool 2

We start with Timeline A, which contains everything in the previous Deadpool and the sequel up to Cable's arrival. This eventually leads to a dark, purple-hued future where Cable and his family live, and which he travels back in time to prevent - or at least avert his family's deaths within (a hypothetical Timeline B). The measure of his success is how dirty his daughter's teddy bear is. Cable travels back in time using a watch of some sorts, which here physically moves him and all his weapons through space and time. This suggests a basic, create-a-new-future form of time travel like  Terminator 2: Judgement Day , where the products of the original dystopian timeline still exist after the change (note that this is different to the first Terminator , which is a time loop).

Cable arrives and nothing seems to be immediately impacted. Indeed, he thinks his mission won't be complete until he actively kills Russell. This advances the previous idea and suggests that when it comes to  changing the future, it can only be done a major, pivotal moments, with other aspects lining up. This fluidity is more akin to the likes of Looper and Back to the Future , where the butterfly effect has a reduced impact.

Time travel is, thankfully, mostly dormant for most of the film - the only reference is Cable's two-charge jump, which may be lazy writing although at least makes sense - but returns in the finale and here's where it gets particularly confusing. Deadpool is killed trying to save Russell, an act which enables Timeline B, but Cable realizes the heroism of the Merc with a Mouth so uses his final charge to travel back ten minutes or so and rewrite time so Wade instead survives (Timeline C). The move mostly ascribes to the fluidity of the larger scale (despite his prior knowledge, the fight at Essex House unfold exactly the same) except that it changes the method.

To go back in time, Cable now travels mentally: he moves into an earlier version of his own body, rather than teleporting himself as before. Here's the first major contradiction, and a tricky question for what Cable's real plan was. Was Cable A going to Marty McFly back into his future life and replace Cable B of the new timeline, and if so, was he going to take over his mind or physically replace him? Either way, the Cable in Timeline B would then have the memories of Timeline A.

Related:  Deadpool 2 Cast & Character Guide

Going back to the saving of Deadpool in what is now Timeline C, this act also enables the happy outcome Timeline B, making Timeline C essentially Timeline B.2. The question once again falls to memory, however. Deadpool's entire arc in the movie hinges on his heart being in the right place, a realization he only comes to when dying in Timeline B. This is avoided in Timeline C, and as Cable was the one to travel back to create this, only he remembers that original outcome. This may rob Deadpool's arc of some closure, although the action of trying to save Russell - regardless of death seems to have taught him that lesson.

Still, a character arc is arguably worth the cost of making sense of the timeline, which is only confused by the manner of travel. Now if only they hadn't done the end-credits scene...

Page 2 of 2:  Deadpool 2's End-Credits Scene Creates A Problem

The end-credits scene problem.

The problems come with Deadpool 2 's end-credits scenes . Deadpool gets more charges in the time travel device and goes back through the timeline of the movie, franchise and our own reality. This is all very clearly a gag, but at least two of these have potentially major ramifications to the ongoing Deadpool story - indeed, the writers count them as canon - so they do need to be consolidated.

First, Deadpool saves Vanessa from her murder at the start of the film. This essentially sees him jumping back to earlier in Timeline C (when it was the same as Timeline A) and creating a new Timeline D where she just lives. Based on everything we've been told, this should rewrite the entirety of Deadpool 2 .

Related: 30 Things You Completely Missed In Deadpool 2

However, we then see him go later in the timeline to save Peter from Zeitgeist's acid spit. This is either in Timeline B/C where X-Force was formed , meaning it's possible to jump between previous timelines and events aren't being overwritten, or X-Force was also created in Timeline D, suggesting that most of Deadpool 2 's events still play out in some form in what is now Timeline E. Going by the sense of predestination, Timeline E is really the movie's Timeline C, only two more characters are alive.

After that, Deadpool goes to kill Origins Wade and a Green Lantern -era Ryan Reynolds, at which point we're inclined to throw in the towel in treating what is clearly a joke. That said, this may explain the mind/body contradiction: Deadpool only moves into his own body in times or places he was alive - in the others, his physical form moves entirely. It's possible we're dealing with a conditional methodology - Cable may not have been alive during the present events of Deadpool 2 , explaining why he first just - which at least standardizes some of this.

Days of Future Past Allows Us To Fudge It

Of course, this isn't the first time the X-Men franchise has dealt with time travel, and that prior use may help smooth out some of our rough edges. Days of Future Past brought together the original X-Men trilogy and First Class continuities semi-seamlessly, with the OG team in a dystopian future and mentally transmitting Wolverine back in time to change the past and create a new, brighter timeline - not dissimilar to the logic we're dealing with in Deadpool 2 .

The fundamental rule of this form of time travel was vague pre-destination. Wolverine was able to make small impacts in the past without changing the greater flow of time because time is a river and a traveler a stone, with the ripples unable to change the overall flow. That things changed in that movie was the product of a seismic shift, and Deadpool 2 could be dealing with something similar. The reason X-Force was formed in Timelines B, C, D and E was because trying to stop Cable was near unavoidable, while the entire thing happens despite the loss of Vanessa's death as an inciting incident because this journey could happen without that.

In conclusion, Deadpool 2 's time travel doesn't make any sense.

We Rewatched Deadpool 2 And Here's What We Noticed

Deadpool holding katanas rewind

Marvel's mouthiest antihero, Wade Wilson — aka Deadpool — quickly carved out a space for himself in the oversaturated superhero genre when "Deadpool" premiered in 2016. Unlike clean-cut Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes such as Captain America, Black Panther, and Spider-Man, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) operates much more in the gray. He certainly has no qualms about committing murder and he subverts expectations by regularly breaking the fourth wall and pushing barriers at every opportunity.

This drew audiences in, and the critical and financial success of "Deadpool" led to a second outing for Reynolds. Premiering on May 18, 2018, "Deadpool 2" sees Wade embark on another daring mission, but he also goes through a pretty big transformation as he learns what it's like to be part of a team — heck, he's even willing to die for Russell (Julian Dennison) at the end, though happily, he doesn't.

Like its predecessor, a big part of what makes "Deadpool 2" work are  the Easter eggs and cultural references  embedded in every scene. But there's actually so much more to Wade's off-handed comments, his MCU references, and the A-list cameos in the movie than viewers realize on first watch. Secrets have since been revealed by the movie's cast and creators, which majorly change the meaning behind certain scenes and creative decisions. Keep reading for a deep dive into the movie as we break down all the hidden details. Here's everything we noticed when we re-watched "Deadpool 2."

There was a version of Deadpool 2 where Vanessa didn't die

At the beginning of "Deadpool 2," Wade Wilson is on top of the world. He's reunited with the love of his life, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), having saved her at the end of the first movie , and now they're planning to have a baby. But the couple are tragically torn apart in the first act of "Deadpool 2" when Vanessa is killed by a stray bullet meant for Wade.

Vanessa's death really shapes the tone of the movie and Wade's character arc, as he keeps seeing Vanessa and interprets his visions as her encouraging him to help Russell. However, "Deadpool 2" has been criticized for making Vanessa a victim of "fridging," a sexist storytelling trope where women are killed off or injured as a plot device to progress the male characters' narratives. Director David Leitch doesn't believe this is what happens to Vanessa because the character emotionally underlines the whole movie.

In fact, Vanessa was initially never supposed to die at all. "We had versions where they broke up and she left him — instead of dying," Leitch admitted on the audio commentary for "Deadpool 2" (via Screen Rant ). According to Ryan Reynolds, the whole tone of the movie would have changed if Vanessa had lived, as they might have actually had a child. In the end, Leitch felt her death was best for Deadpool's narrative because he wouldn't have had the same motivation and character development had Vanessa lived.

There was more to that X-Men cameo than you realized

One of the biggest unanswered questions from "Deadpool 2" was why didn't other X-Men show up alongside Colossus (Stefan Kapicic), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), and Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) to help during the final battle against Juggernaut? As viewers will recall, several of the "famous X-Men," as Wade calls them, do make an uncredited appearance early in the movie. Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Professor X (James McAvoy) hide from Wade while he's in the X-mansion. It's only a brief cameo, and it's easy to accept their appearance as a fun Easter egg for X-Men fans.

But if they were available for one scene, why didn't they join the fight at the end of the movie? Well, it turns out logistics were a major problem. None of the X-Men were actually available because they were busy shooting "Dark Phoenix" at the same time, so their appearance was added via a green screen in the doorway. With that said, the "Dark Phoenix" cast did give the cameo their all. "We had a lot of different versions for when they open that door and turn to us. But the one they used was pretty chill." Peters recalled to CinemaBlend . While he didn't reveal much about the alternate takes, they seemingly tried to measure up to Deadpool's signature R-rated humor. "There was some fun, dirty stuff," he admitted.

Nobody knew about Matt Damon's cameo

By now you probably know that Matt Damon had a cameo in "Deadpool 2" — even if you missed it at the time. The "Jason Bourne" star played one of the rednecks that Cable (Josh Brolin) first encounters when he arrives in 2018. The scene is chock full of Easter eggs, including the "True Grit" mini-reunion between Damon and Brolin, but very few people knew that at the time.

Details of Damon's cameo were kept under wraps, and while his scene partner Alan Tudyk is named in the credits, Damon isn't. He's credited as Dickie Greenleaf, which is a callback to "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and the identity that his character steals in that film. His cameo wasn't publicized or talked about in interviews until after the movie was released and he's heavily disguised by his costume and prosthetics in the scene, so viewers would be forgiven for not recognizing him. Members of the cast and crew certainly didn't, as only David Leitch and Ryan Reynolds were in the know.

Reynolds, who co-wrote the movie, thought the toilet paper scene would be a fun addition and pitched Damon the idea over dinner. "We didn't even tell the crew. His name wasn't on the call sheet — it was a fake name. Nobody really knew what that scene was about. They were like, 'Why are we shooting these two rednecks?' We just didn't tell anybody," Leitch later admitted to Collider .

The reason behind Brad Pitt's cameo

As a producer and co-writer, Ryan Reynolds was intimately involved with the making of "Deadpool 2." This means he had a hand in casting decisions, especially when it came to the plentiful celebrity cameos. Alongside Matt Damon and Alan Tudyk, fans will no doubt recall seeing Brad Pitt get a brief moment of screen time. His character, Vanisher, has just parachuted out of a plane along with the rest of the X-Force, but severe winds blow him into electrical cables and he is killed. The electrical current causes Vanisher to become visible, and that's when Pitt appears.

This is a fun cameo for fans, but there was actually a lot more to it than comes across on screen. Pitt had originally been in the running to play Cable but backed out — or vanished — from the role due to a scheduling conflict. Although Josh Brolin ended up playing the futuristic warrior, David Leitch told Collider that Pitt still really wanted to be involved in the franchise. "He kind of left the door open when we left that meeting, like, 'If you guys ever need anything, give me a call. I'd love to be involved,' and Ryan just said, 'Oh, I have an idea.' So we started to think about what it could be and The Vanisher thing was perfect," Leitch explained. All Pitt asked for in return for his appearance was a single cup of coffee.

Why Stan Lee's cameo was cut

While Matt Damon and Brad Pitt's cameos were two of the most notable in "Deadpool 2," it's probably Stan Lee's that was the most anticipated. Late in his life, the Marvel Comics co-creator made a number of cameos in the MCU  and other Marvel-based films, popping up in funny ways, but his "Deadpool 2" cameo wasn't what viewers were expecting. Unlike in the first movie where Lee played a strip club DJ, his appearance in the sequel was purely two-dimensional.

"Deadpool 2" celebrates Lee with a giant mural, which can be seen when Domino is parachuting into the city. David Leitch explained to Collider that the colorful graffiti art was included in the movie because scheduling issues precluded them from shooting Lee in the flesh. "We're always aware that you want to get a Stan Lee appearance in there, but ... it was more like what would work and what was the time and place, and our schedule was tight and things got away from us," the director explained. "So by the time we were done with the movie, we were thinking where could we plug him in during reshoots."

Leitch denied at the time that Lee's absence was due to his rumored ill health. Sadly, Lee's health did begin to decline, and he passed away just a few months after the release of "Deadpool 2," with his last-ever cameo in "Avengers: Endgame."

Zazie Beetz just forgot to shave her armpits

Zazie Beetz's Domino is a great addition to Deadpool's X-Force — and not just because she's the only member beside him who survives the team's parachute jump. From day one, Beetz put her own stamp on the strong, determined, and lucky character. She collaborated with David Leitch and Ryan Reynolds on how Domino should wear her hair, which resulted in her embracing her natural afro in the movie.

This wasn't the only natural hair Domino retains in "Deadpool 2," either. Viewers might have spotted that the character keeps her armpits au naturale  too. Beetz has been praised for making a bold feminist statement by not shaving under her arms. But unlike her afro, this actually wasn't a stylistic choice at first. She admitted to The Independent  that she simply got busy and forgot: "Before we started shooting I actually hadn't shaved in a bit, just out of ... not even having gotten to it," she explained. "And my boyfriend, if I remember correctly, he was like, 'Maybe you should keep it.' And I was like, 'You know what?' That's kind of a good idea.' So I just kept it. And then I sort of tentatively brought it up. Well, not really tentatively, I brought it up."

Beetz wasn't too worried about any backlash to her armpit hair as she was keen to call out the societal pressure women feel to shave — and the truth is, sometimes superheroes have more important things to worry about.

Who is the 'guy who can't draw feet'?

With almost all the X-Force team dead, it's down to Domino and Deadpool to try to protect Russell from Cable. After parachuting into the city, Domino heads straight for the prisoner transfer truck, and thanks to her luck powers, things miraculously fall into place around her and she lands inside the front compartment. But as this is going on, Wade is in her ear dissing her abilities. "It's just hard to picture, and certainly not very cinematic," he says as a car flips behind Domino in the background. "I mean, luck? What coked-out, glass pipe-sucking freak-show comic book artist came up with that little chestnut? Probably a guy who can't draw feet!" he continues to yell over coms, although the scene proves that Wade massively underestimates her powers.

His comments are typical Deadpool humor, but there's more to what he said than you might have realized watching "Deadpool 2" for the first time. Wade's quip about the "guy who can't draw feet" is actually a dig at Rob Liefeld, who created Deadpool in the comics. Liefeld is famed for never drawing feet in any of his work, typically cutting his characters off above their ankles, though as he has pointed out, this style of drawing quickly spread around the industry. Ryan Reynolds reached out to clear the joke with Liefeld, who was thrilled to be included in the movie. "There's no greater shout-out in the world," he told Inverse .

Ryan Reynolds secretly voiced Juggernaut

"Deadpool 2" takes the opportunity to introduce a few more morally gray characters — like Russell, who is not actually a bad guy, as his actions are a product of his environment and upbringing. Juggernaut, on the other hand, is intent on causing destruction. Having befriended Russell in the Ice Box, Juggernaut joins him in attacking the orphanage before taking on Deadpool, Domino, Cable, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Yukio in the final battle.

Juggernaut's reintroduction to the X-Men film universe was a major secret prior to the release of "Deadpool 2." All the secrecy paid off as Juggernaut was a surprise that not many people saw coming. But the biggest surprise of all was the A-list actor who ended up voicing Juggernaut: Ryan Reynolds, although he wasn't actually supposed to do it and isn't named as the voice of Juggernaut in the credits.

After "Deadpool 2" was released, Reynolds revealed to Empire  that he'd just been standing in until they could find the real voice actor, which never happened. "I just did it as a kind of temp. It was this sort of Brooklyn brawler voice that we modulated in post, and cranked up and gave it all this bass and reverberation," he explained. "We didn't settle on that just because it was quality, we settled on that because we just didn't have any more budget left for other actors to jump in." Director David Leitch ended up doing the motion capture for Juggernaut.

Deadpool 2 almost had an alternate ending

At the end of "Deadpool 2" , armed with Cable's time travel device, Wade makes some pretty major changes to the timeline. First, he goes back in time to save Vanessa, killing her attacker with a cream cheese spreader before he can get a shot off. Then he pokes fun at the past roles of Ryan Reynolds, killing the version of Deadpool he played in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and putting a bullet in Reynolds' head before he can play Green Lantern.

It's a pretty happy ending overall, and it creates a clear path for Morena Baccarin to appear in "Deadpool 3," where Vanessa may transform into the mutant superhero Copycat. But "Deadpool 2" almost had a completely different ending where this probably wouldn't have happened. Co-writer Rhett Reese said the team was initially happy with their decision to kill Vanessa off and leave it like that. "We originally did not save her," Reese admitted to CBR . "It was interesting — we thought we might have to save her with the time machine, because the audience would be mad at us, but they were accepting of her being dead."

Bringing Vanessa back was ultimately a last-minute decision, but they felt it was the best fit for the story and the future of the franchise. Luckily, when they called Baccarin up to tell her of this change, she was very receptive to the news.

Why the baby Hitler scene didn't make it into the movie

One of Wade's time-traveling adventures that didn't make it into the movie involved him going back in time to kill Hitler as a baby. In the deleted post-credits scene, he's ready to go full Deadpool on the newborn infant, but then starts to struggle with the decision. Despite giving himself a pep talk, he then admits, "I think we both know I don't have what it takes to do this," as he cradles the baby.

The scene was eventually released as part of the "Super Duper Cut" in August 2018. Discussing the decision not to include the scene in the theatrically released version of the movie, Ryan Reynolds told The Hollywood Reporter that there was a big debate behind the scenes. "I always loved it, because it created the same debate in our edit room as it does in the streets of the world," he explained. "It was debated back and forth, and over and over again. We were all a little nervous about it, wondering, 'Is it too much?'" In the end, "none of us could come to a consensus on how to handle it, so our final decision was to just not handle it, to just not put it in the movie," Reynolds added.

Deadpool 2's Cable explained

Genuinely the most batshit comic book origin ever.

deadpool 2, movie trailer, josh brolin as cable

At which point, the non-comic book readers among you will have scratched your head and said 'Who?', much like you did when Thanos rocked up at the end of Avengers .

Deadpool 2 Cable

Josh Brolin will debut in Deadpool 2 as the most comics-in-the-'90s character ever – a time-travelling mutant cyborg who is and yet kind of isn't the son of two of the best-known X-Men members. The film will apparently not touch on his origin , but it's just too gloriously weird for you not to understand (or at least try to understand).

What you are about to read is honestly what happened in the comics, no word of a lie. We'd say you couldn't make it up, but they actually did.

A childhood like no other

Baby Cable and Madelyne Pryor

Cable is Nathan Christopher Summers, the son of X-Men leader Scott 'Cyclops' Summers. His mother isn't Scott's sweetheart Jean Grey as you might have expected. No, she's Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean created by Mr Sinister, a villain who has an unhealthy fixation on the Summers-Grey genetics, who you may remember as the creepy guy with the red diamond on his forehead from the '90s X-Men cartoon. His plan is for Nathan to be powerful enough to beat his enemy Apocalypse.

With Jean presumed dead, Cyclops meets her exact double, marries her and has a baby, but as soon as Jean returns he runs off to be with her. Madelyne, understandable upset by this (and struggling with the fake memories of her fabricated past), makes the obvious choice to... well, make a deal with some demons to sacrifice her son in order to usher in hell on earth while dressed in nothing but a cloak, a bikini and knee-high boots. We've all been there.

None of this reflects very well on Cyclops who a) didn't realise that his wife was an exact copy of his old girlfriend, b) was presumably mainly into them for the looks, and c) ditches his wife and baby at the drop of a hat. Creep.

Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix

Madelyne – as the 'Goblin Queen' – is defeated, but then Apocalypse rocks up and infects the baby with a 'techno organic virus' to kill of the potential threat. Nathan is sent into the future to be raised by his half-sister Rachel, Jean and Scott's daughter from an alternate reality (Jean at this point has three de facto children that she never had to give birth to).

Nathan grows up as the messiah figure of a group called Clan Askani in a horrible future where Apocalypse rules. They can't fully cure him, so he has to use most of his super-duper mutant powers to keep his virus in check, but at least he gets a cool metal arm out of it. He goes up against his evil clone Stryfe (of course!), who was raised by Apocalypse before the villain's eventual death. Oh, and did we mention Nathan is raised by Jean and Scott, implanted into future empty clone bodies?

Hardcore mercenary type

Cable vs Deadpool

Meanwhile, the apparently unrelated, adult character Cable was introduced in X-Men spinoff New Mutants , invented by Louise Simonson and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld. The series was soon replaced by X-Force – a comic intended, like everything in the '90s, to be more gritty and hardcore. To that end, Cable recruited the young mutants into his proactive and aggressive new team.

Cable was probably the ultimate expression of Liefeld's brilliantly ludicrous devotion to superfluous pouches, unfeasibly huge guns and outlandish musculature over, you know, human anatomy.

Kid Cable

Cable was eventually revealed to be Nathan Summers, which weirdly made him now older than his parents. Thanks for that, time travel. He has been killed, resurrected and lost in time more often than we can count, has been a frequent X-Men and X-Force member, and even managed to finish off his enemy Apocalypse a couple of times (as well as bringing him back to life on one occasion, just to be contrary).

He has also become a popular partner for Deadpool, probably because the latter is silly and slapstick and the former is grim and serious thanks to his messed-up origin. They managed to support the Cable & Deadpool comic series for an impressive 50 issues – including a story in which Cable was turned into a baby, casting Deadpool as the least likely babysitter ever.

As noted above, most of this is unlikely to factor into Deadpool 2 . If it makes you feel better, you can pretend that a crazy clone of Famke Janssen is Cable's mum. We won't stop you.

Deadpool And Wolverine CinemaCon Footage Fully Ripped Off The R-Rated Disney Band-Aid With Cocaine And Pegging Jokes And A Whole Lot Of F Bombs

The new Marvel blockbuster looks absolutely vulgar but totally hilarious.

We have known for a while now that Shawn Levy's Deadpool & Wolverine would be the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie , but still, the question has lingered about just how far the movie would go with adult content. Obviously there is going to be foul language and violence, but it is still a movie made under the umbrella of the Walt Disney Company: an institution that has spent the last 100 years being synonymous with family-friendly content. The Deadpool & Wolverine Super Bowl trailer that arrived in February provided a nice taste of what we can expect, but it turns out that preview was playing with kid gloves. Having now seen nine minutes of the MCU's next blockbuster at CinemaCon this afternoon, I can confirm that there are no punches being pulled, and the film appears to be exceptionally vulgar, nasty, and crazy funny.

The week of festivities at CinemaCon came to an end this evening, and Disney was the studio that hosted the final presentation of the year at The Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The company highlighted a number of exciting titles on the 2024 movie release calendar , including Wes Ball's Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus , but no title had the crowd experiencing fits of uproarious laughter quite like what was shown from Deadpool & Wolverine . The footage was not just hilarious and super subversive, but it provided some key answers to some major questions that fans have been asking about the upcoming Marvel film .

As it turns out, the film will start with Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool ( Ryan Reynolds ) retired from the superhero life and working at a car dealership – minus a mask and with a stapled-on toupee. He's unfortunately not very good at the job, as he is seen on a test drive with a family of four in a minivan and just can't stop swearing (even though he is sitting in the backseat sandwiched between two young children. Not only does he drop F-bombs while talking about how much better the Kia Carnival is than a Honda Odyssey (his comparison is that the former "doesn't fucking suck"), but he goes as far as to lament the fact that he doesn't have children because he doesn't have a lot of vaginal sex.

Back at the car lot in the employee locker room, we learn that Wade got the job at Drivemax via his former X-Force teammate Peter (Rob Delaney), who is still holding out hope that his friend will return to the superhero lifestyle and even keeps the Deadpool costume in his locker. Wade, however, is super done with trying to be a hero and is instead content to aim for the middle ("You'll never miss")

Walking back to Wade's place, Peter explains that his friend is just experiencing a midlife crisis and he needs to "go big" – like a friend of his who got his nipples pierced and got a chain that connects them and is attached to his "Van Johnson." Amid this, however, Wade is distracted by a crew of construction workers who are possibly taking photos of him.

Upstairs at the apartment that Wade shares with Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), all of the former hero's friends are waiting to celebrate his birthday. He has conversations with all of them – talking to Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) about how Great British Bakeoff staves off suicidal tendencies; discussing his "hair system" with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna); and having a moment with Vanessa ( Morena Baccarin ), who is now working in middle management and has a new boyfriend. He also has a lengthy conversation with Blind Al about cocaine – Wade admonishing her for bringing up the drug because all references are supposed to be off limits, per instruction from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige .

When the friends sing Happy Birthday song and Deadpool blows out the candle on his cake, there is a knock at the door and Wade goes to answer it himself. Standing in the hallway is a cadre of agents from the Time Variance Authority... but the Merc With The Mouth is convinced that they are prostitutes hired by Dopinder (Karan Soni) who are there to participate in an orgy with him. His interpretation of what's happening doesn't change when the agents pull out their Time Sticks and charge them up, saying that he is not a natural bottom but that he is not new to pegging... though it is new for Disney. Frustrated, the main TVA agent opens a portal behind Wade and he is pushed through it, and Wade's toupee is pulled off in the process.

The protagonist suddenly finds himself at the Time Variance Authority and across a table from a man who introduces himself as Mr. Paradox (Matthew MacFadyen) and explains the purpose of the TVA – which Wade retorts is a "shit-ton" of exposition for a threequel. Paradox brings up Deadpool's time travel activities at the end of Deadpool 2 using the device belonging to Cable, but he says that's not why Deadpool was brought in.

Walking to a control room together, Paradox tells the former assassin that he is special and that he has been chosen for a higher purpose unknown even to him, and he is being tasked with not just saving the Sacred Timeline but "Avenging" it. Wade acts coy ("The Sacred Timeline? I'm assuming I'm going to marvel at how cinematic it feels?"), but then he gets the full introduction when a bunch of monitors display different videos of Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America. Paradox says that Wade is no longer lost and he can finally be a hero among heroes... though DP is temporarily distracted by a video of himself lying on the ground with Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ) by his side crying. He is told to ignore this and that it is from a "distant future."

Deadpool is officially ready to leave his own timeline and enter the "greatest timeline of them all," which instantly gives the hero a messiah complex and he declares himself "Marvel Jesus." Stepping away from Paradox for a moment, Wade walks toward the camera, grabs it, pulls it close and says, "Suck it, Fox! I'm going to Disneyland!" right before smashing the thing.

The next step is getting his brand new costume, and Wade is introduced to the TVA tailor. He is hooked up with some fresh threads... but in the process he is also sexually assaulted many times by the strange, bearded old man, who repeatedly grabs Deadpool's crotch and slaps his ass during a dress-up montage. Back in the control room, he out loud declares that he knows everyone's underpants are getting tighter – pointing at a guy and  saying that his clothes say middle management but his eyes say "fucky fucky." When the guy picks up a phone, Wade inquires if the guy is calling his wife, and the TVA employee says he is calling HR... to which DP responds, "Does your wife work in HR?"

After a quick montage, the footage ended with a quick scene of Deadpool in a car with Wolverine ( Hugh Jackman ) - who is dressed in his full-on yellow-and-blue costume (minus mask). It's a look that Deadpool isn't evidently a big fan of, saying,

What's with the suit? The X-Men make you wear it? Those sons of fucking bitches. Friends don't make friends leave the house looking like they fight crime for the Los Angeles Rams.

If I haven't already made it abundantly clear, the Deadpool & Wolverine CinemaCon footage was remarkable, and it looks like comic book movie fans are in for an exceptional treat this summer.

After ages of waiting, Deadpool & Wolverine is finally almost here and set to arrive in theaters on July 26. We'll be covering the film extensively here on CinemaBlend both before and after it arrives on the big screen, so be sure to stat tuned for more updates about the movie in the coming weeks and months.

The best time to visit Moscow is during spring  (March-May). The temperatures will begin to creep up and the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day. Hotel rates will also have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
