Architecture Tours

This announcement is long overdue.  For the past few months, we’ve added  History & Architecture Tours , as a new offering.  These tours have become quite popular, largely due to the excellent guide that conducts the tours.  Ed Pyrch is an accredited architect that provides insights about the intricacies and underlying symbolism of Savannah’ s famous ward design as you stroll through the city under a canopy of urban forest with its historic walls of delightful architecture.  During the tour, Ed will explain how the vibrancy of Oglethorpe’s enlightened Utopian plan worked in the eighteenth century and how it thrives today. You can also expect to discover favorite spots to dine, unique shops, galleries and hidden historic gems. You will find that there’s something for everyone in beautiful Savannah !

Ed’s first visit to Savannah was in 2005 for the Spring Historic District Tour of Homes which benefits the Historic Savannah Foundation .  That trip began a love affair that continues today with the architecture of Savannah and Oglethorpe’s 1733 Plan. After moving to Savannah permanently in 2007, Ed and his wife Kathleen enjoy life in the 2.3 square mile National Landmark Historic District in their “900 Square Feet of Bliss,” a cozy restored 1899 cottage.

As the City of Savannah Architectural Coordinator from 2008 to 2012, he managed design and construction of the city’s capital improvement projects like the Forsyth Park Visitors’ Center, Historic Grayson Stadium and improvements to City Hall.  Today Ed works with his private clients on architectural projects from concept design through construction and obtaining all board approvals in the Historic District.

Ed also enjoys creating fine architectural illustrations such as the Mercer Williams house below.  If you would like to see some of Ed’s art work, you can stop in at Cool Savannah Tours & Gifts at 42 E Bay St in Savannah, or you can shop at our online store .

Architecture Tours Of Savannah, GA

savannah ga architecture tours

Much of Savannah’s charm rests upon the beauty of its historic architecture and the numerous squares of its city plan.

Savannah was famously spared the fate many other Georgia cities suffered during General Sherman’s March to the Sea, and has a rich variety of 19th-century architecture (plus a few 18th-century survivors of the devastating fires that plagued Savannah during its early growth).

Savannah’s landscape architecture and civic design, too – the squares and its extensive urban forest – are as distinctive and remarkable as its assortment of historic buildings.

Local tour guides offer numerous general history walking tours that provide an introduction to the city and its past, but if you have already taken a general tour, or have a special interest in architecture, an architecturally-focused walking tour provides a much more in-depth guide to Savannah’s buildings and landscape than a historical overview tour has time for.

A few of Savannah’s guide companies specialize exclusively in architectural tours – Savannah Rambles (Dirk Hardison) and Architectural Tours of Savannah (Jonathan Stalcup) – drawing upon their professional experience and academic knowledge of architecture and preservation in the city.

The rest of the architecture tours, though their focus is usually on a specific aspect or period of Savannah’s architecture or landscape, are offered by general tour companies.

Overview Architecture Tours Of Savannah

Several tours provide a chronological overview of Savannah’s architectural history from its earliest surviving styles through to the present day.

“Savannah Architecture Ramble” (pet-friendly, 12 max) 2hrs or 5hrs . With Savannah Rambles. Former professional restorationist and architectural consultant Dirk Hardison offers two tours providing a general review of the city’s architecture and the people who shaped its landscape from the colonial era through to the preservation projects of more recent times, geographically focused around the area of the Bull Street squares.

The shorter tour (2 hours) is usually available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday-Saturday mornings. Adults $20, children/students (8-21) $10, young children (0-7) free. Reservations are recommended (either online or call 912-704-8170) but not required.

The longer tour (5 hours, break included) covers roughly twice the distance, and is available fall through spring on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. $60 per person. More details

Architecture Tour, 1hr30 . With Architectural Tours of Savannah. SCAD architecture graduate Jonathan Stalcup offers a single, chronological overview tour of Savannah’s main architectural periods and styles, mostly within the more northerly portion of the Historic District.

Tours are available most mornings, $30 per person. Reservations are required, email [email protected] or call 912-604-6354. More details

Savannah’s Mansions & Residential Architecture

Much of Savannah’s notable architecture consists of its historic houses and mansions. You can expect these to be discussed on any general tour, but some center on this topic specifically.

Please note that unless otherwise specified, tours will not enter any of the homes seen, including those that are ordinarily open to the public. For details of visiting Savannah’s historic house museums, see here.

“The Historic Homes Walk” (pet-friendly) 1hr30 . With The Savannah Walks, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour focuses on the history of Savannah’s Historic District mansions, their residents and preservation history, and includes a visit to the Harper-Fowlkes House (though please note that if you bring your dog on the rest of the tour, they may not be brought into the house).

Tours are available every morning. Adults $30, children (6-14) $12, young children (0-5) free. Admission to the Harper-Fowlkes House is included in the price. Reservations can be made online. More details

“Savannah Homes” 1hr30 . With Private Walking Tours of Savannah, a general-interest tour company with multiple guides. This private-only tour examines Savannah’s historic residential architecture and how domestic styles changed with the growth and economic development of the city.

Morning and afternoon tours are available daily. $45 per person, 2 person minimum. Reservations are required, either online or call 912-509-2084. More details

Landscape Architecture: Squares & Gardens

The architecture of Savannah’s landscape – its system of 22 squares in particular, but also the effect produced by the Historic District’s many individual domestic gardens – contributes as much to the city’s appeal as does the architecture of its homes and public buildings.

A small number of tours specialize in this landscape history. Please note that unless otherwise specified, no private gardens are entered. The only way to pay a visit to Savannah’s notable privately-owned gardens (excepting those attached to historic house museums ) is to attend either the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens or the North of Gaston Street Tour of Hidden Gardens, organized each year in spring.

“Gates and Gardens” (pet-friendly) 1hr30 . With The Savannah Walks, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour focuses on the history of Savannah’s historic squares and private gardens.

Early afternoon tours are available daily. Adults $20, children (6-14) $9, young children (0-5) free. Reservations recommended, available online. More details

“Gardens & Historic Homes” 2hrs . With Noble Jones Tours, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour examines several of Savannah’s squares and their history, plus the gardens and ironwork of surrounding homes.

Tours are available Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday, usually in the early afternoon. Additional days may be available seasonally. Adults $30, children (8–14) $15, young children (0-7) free. Reservations are required, call 912-660-6468 or book online. More details

“Garden/Architectural Tour” . With Harriet Meyerhoff, Personalized Tours of Savannah. Private walking tour of Savannah's gardens and architecture. Call 912-234-0014 for inquiries and reservations. More details

Savannah’s Neighborhoods & Period Architecture

Many of Savannah’s neighborhoods have their own distinct architecture, often tied to the history of their development. Today, these neighborhoods are often the target of preservation efforts.

Occasional current tours focus on this neighborhood history. Some additional public tours that venture outside of the Historic District may sometimes be offered, but for the most part, if you want an architectural tour of Savannah’s more outlying neighborhoods, it will have to be self-guided.

“Early Bird Preservation Tour” 1hr40-2hrs . The Davenport House Museum offers seasonally-available tours focused on the Savannah’s preservation history. April tours (Saturdays, 8am) discuss the Historic District’s East Side. May tours (Saturdays, 8am) explore the history of Savannah in the 1820s. $21 per person

  • 655harleyc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Outstanding Tour Guide Our tour guide Savannah (yes, that’s her real name) was EXCELLENT. Great verbal skills, exceptional story telling that brought the city and its nuances to life. A true professional. The South Historic District is everything you would hope Savannah to be. Beautifully surrounded by trees and loaded with 12 different public squares along three north south roads (Bull Street is the best). Peaceful, low traffic and EVERY motorist stops for pedestrians all the time. A lovely walking experience. I would suggest staying in the South Historic district to the North of Forsyth Park on Bull or Abercorn. Avoid Dayton. Also would avoid staying in the North Historic District as it’s noisy with traffic and devoid of any real charm. Lots of big hotels and riverfront bars and restaurants there for a dinner, but staying there would be like staying in any small city on a river anywhere in the US. Read more Written April 14, 2024

Knowledgeable, pleasant, easy to follow, gracious, and takes his time without belaboring any particular style or stop. Jonathan is a joy to spend time with!!

A definite must if you want a thorough, educated tour of Savannah's Historic District's architectural growth. Jonathan's enthusiasm and knowledge is infectious. The waking tour was about 90 minutes. We went on a Sunday morning at 10 am, which I found the timing to be best because it was less crowded on our walk from other groups/ tourists. One of the men who was part of our tour has done Jonathan's tour 2 times before, which says a lot! Enjoy!

Jonathon Scalcup, owner and tour guide offers once daily tours highlighting the history and architecture of Savannah. His presence is commanding because he is both passionate about his love of architecture as well as very easy to engage with in conversation. Our tour today lasted about 1.5 hours, peppered with details about architecture and the historical happenings of the times' influence on the same. He is wealth of knowledge, and I will certainly be back to walk with him again soon. Check out his page at www.architecturalsavannah.com

Excellent, informative, well-researched tour. I also loved the printed "cheat sheet" of architectural styles that Jonathan gave us toward the end of the tour. Highly recommend!

Jonathan was an excellent tour guide and offered a fantastic introduction to Savannah for our first visit to this fine and historic city. He provided a systematic and well thought out view of the city that tied the history to the architecture, political and social climate without making it a dry and boring lecture. Jonathan didn't just run through a scripted monologue, but he listened to our questions, picked up on some of our background (like us being from New Orleans area) and adjusted his presentation to include other information and parallels to New Orleans, plus he recommended other sites to see in Savannah, based on our interchanges. I highly recommend Architectural Tours of Savannah for any first time visitor, seasoned visitor that wants a fresh perspective, or even a long t ID.me resident who wants to know more about their city!

Jonathan's 90-minute walking tour begins at Oglethorpe Square and an overview of the history of Savannah. Jonathan discussed the city grid and the creation of the garden squares. As we saw the squares and lanes, he pointed out the early houses and the progression in styles, materials, uses, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the lecture, learning about the homes and neighborhoods. It's a leisurely walk and on level ground, so not rigorous. Jonathan gave us each a cheatsheet of the architectural styles and periods at the end of the tour. He's published a book on Savannah architecture and helped prepare an audioguide for Savannah's oldest art museum. He can give recommendations on food, art, history, real estate, etc. Highly recommend his tour!

We were in town for a wedding and i last minute brought a group of 9 ranging from "not much interest in architecture" to a "home designer" and everybody loved it. Jonathan creates a great narrative that he plays out with the actual houses with historical connections that keep everybody engaged. He keeps things concise and entertaining but can easily go as deep into architecture as you want thru questions. He is a natural presenter keeping the information at the heart of it but has a quick wit that had us all chuckling.

Jonathan, a graduate of SCAD, gave us an informative and fun walking tour. Because of his architectural background, Jonathan shared in-depth knowledge of the multiple building styles as well as how Savannah's history shaped its growth. While the trolley tours are charming, I much preferred this enlightening and educational experience. Wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes.

More than 40 percent of the buildings and homes found in Savannah, Georgia have architectural or historical significance. The restoration of these structures is often undertaken by passionate individuals in strict accordance with the rules and regulations put forth by the Savannah Historic Foundation. Restoration of historic buildings has thrived here especially since the addition of the Savannah College of Art and Design in the late 1970s. “Main Street” programs, tax credits, grants and preservation incentives have had remarkable success throughout Georgia, demonstrating time after time the economic benefit of historic preservation.

The architecture here is incredibly diverse with styles that span the 18th and 19th centuries from simple Colonial to the gingerbread accents of the Victorian period. The area also features wonderful examples of 20th century architecture as well, due in large part to popular movements like ‘Beautify Main Street’ and the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movements that affected historic , commercial and residential buildings.

FEDERAL ARCHITECTURE

THE DAVENPORT HOUSE

Federal architecture in Savannah reflects an early time in America’s history, a time when the United States was getting its bearings as a democratic republic towards the end of the 1700s leading into the advent of the new century. Considered to be the nation’s first architectural style , there are many examples to be found throughout the city.

Influenced by Roman classicism and ancient Greece’s balanced, symmetrical designs, here are some of the cues to look for to identify this style.

Be it only found on the structure’s facade or enveloping the entirety of it, bright, red bricks are a tell-tale sign of the Federal style. These structures are typically bereft of any ostentatiousness or gratuitous ornamentation. Many bay windows with shutters are built into the facade which accentuate the simple lines and right angles that comprise the overall look. The entry to the building or home commonly has a raised portico or stoop. It exists in stately homes as a pair of columns, curved steps and iron railings whereas in more modest confines, the portico could be a side-stoop with just a few steps and an overhanging roof at the entry in place of columns. Even though simplicity is the order of the day, the covered portico or the brackets that line the overhanging eave of the roof can sometimes contain more flashy elements.

GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE

THE OLDE PINK HOUSE RESTAURANT

Similar to the Federal style with its preoccupation with balance and symmetry but predating it, The Georgian style , which refers to a variety of interior and architectural designs from the same period, marked the time between the accession of George I in early 1700 and the death of George IV in the early 1800s.

The basic Georgian overall look was usually geometrical, with the main block of the building frequently augmented by hyphens and wings. It was a relatively conservative design approach that sometimes didn’t complement the usefulness of the space. The Georgian style utilized many of the hallmarks of Renaissance design like rigid symmetry in building mass, in window and door placement, and even in the layout of interior rooms. In the South, Georgian houses were almost always constructed out of brick with stone and stucco being the rare exceptions. The brickwork occasionally incorporated a horizontal belt course between the first and second floors.

GOTHIC REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE

THE GREEN-MELDRIM HOUSE

Initially used on churches of the period, the Gothic Revival style is depicted by crafted details on pinnacles, chimneys and large welcoming entry hallways. This style had a very particular iteration in the Deep South, celebrated, as it was, in the works of artists like Tennessee Williams and Clarence John Laughlin. There is a certain romantic creepiness to the period characterized by spires, steeply pitched gable roofs, asymmetrical floor plans and battlements and parapets. The style became a hit in the 1830s in the United States after enjoying a nice run in England, where it originated.

Across the pond in the United Kingdom, Gothic Revival became the dominant style for a proper country home or church, whereas in the States, the blending of Medieval design cues had a much longer run of popularity, with churches being built in the style through the 1950s.

GREEK REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

During the fledgeling nation’s growth spurt, America’s Founding Fathers looked to the land that taught them the earliest form of democracy for inspiration on how official buildings, churches and homes should look in the new republic – ancient Greece. Tall supporting columns of the Doric, Ionic or Corinthian orders were adopted along with scrolled volutes usually seen accenting the banister of a long flight of stairs.

The columns of the Doric order are the least showy of the other two and their simplicity was chosen by architects to convey a sense of safety and security.Ionic orders are identified by the scrolled volutes atop the columns. Gabled porticos are the arched, sometimes pointed, roofs above a front porch door. Popular throughout the residential south, gabled porticos are often paired with two skinny columns framing the entry door.

Ancient Greek buildings were made with heavy stone. In order to facilitate the building of a structure with much lighter materials, buildings in the United States were crafted in wood and then painted with white plaster to approximate the look of stone. Greek Revival buildings commonly have sloped roofs because of the simple facade outline they create. Cornices, the molding underneath the roof, give the building a decorative flair.

MODERN ARCHITECTURE

THE JEPSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Ironically enough, Georgia’s First City’s most modern building can be found in Savannah’s National Landmark District. Designed by Israeli architect Moshe Safdie, the idea was to construct a building representative of the 21st century that featured wide open spaces that were inviting to all who came to visit. Due to his international track record of responsible, compelling designs in historic settings, Mr. Safdie was tasked with erecting a futuristic building that could peacefully coexist with the past that surrounded it.

Tour Savannah, Georgia

By Julia Reed

Back in 1994, when The New York Times gave a rave review to the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt’s elegant and amusing tale of life and death in Savannah, Georgia, the paper’s critic wrote the following about the author and his subject: "What he found was a cultured but isolated backwater, a town where who your great-grandparents were still matters, where anti-Yankee resentments are never far from the surface, and where writers from New York are invited to midnight voodoo ceremonies in graveyards."

Two decades and more than three million copies later, Savannah bears little resemblance to the decidedly "inward-looking city" Berendt says he encountered when he began visiting in the early ’80s. Since then the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has reshaped the cultural and architectural landscapes of the city via its sprawling campus of lovingly restored buildings, including the once-dilapidated antebellum train station that now houses the stunning SCAD Museum of Art . Devised by acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie, the Jepson Center for the Arts , devoted to contemporary works, opened in 2006. And the SCAD-sponsored Savannah Film Festival, which attracts the likes of Liam Neeson, Isabella Rossellini, and Alexander Payne along with an audience of more than 40,000 each October, has been joined by an equally impressive book fair every February and a two-week music festival, featuring talents from mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, in March.

"The transformation is huge," says Chuck Chewning, design director for the Venice-based interiors firm Studio Rubelli. He first arrived in the city in 1983 as a member of SCAD’s fifth matriculating class, when, he remembers, the college consisted of "a one-building brick schoolhouse," now called Poetter Hall. Even when Savannah was in a more frayed state—Chewning recalls a largely run-down historic district, boarded-up buildings, and "no food scene to speak of"—the place was magically, seductively beautiful. "I immediately fell in love," he says. A couple of years ago he bought an 1878 townhouse on Pulaski Square one of the prettiest local parks, and now, when Stateside, he takes the two-hour flight here from his base in New York every weekend.

Located on a 40-foot-high bluff with views of the Savannah River, the town was established in 1733 as the last of Britain’s colonial capitals in America. Laid out by General James Oglethorpe in a repeating grid of varying block styles, it has been called "America’s first planned city." The design included six public squares—by the mid-19th century, that number had increased to 24, and all but two of them remain. It’s an arrangement that provides Savannah with abundant open space.

The ubiquitous Spanish-moss-draped trees create the atmosphere of an urban forest, but the city has just as dense a population of notable structures, among them the circa-1819 Owens-Thomas House , now a museum, which is considered one of the finest examples of Regency architecture in the U.S., and the neoclassical-style Telfair Academy , a 19th-century mansion that’s now a gallery of 18th-to-20th-century art. Today the historic district encompasses more than 2,300 significant properties within an area of about 2.5 square miles.

Likewise, SCAD’s ever-expanding campus comprises dozens of refurbished buildings. "I chose Savannah for its past and the future I imagined," says Paula S. Wallace, the school’s president and cofounder. "I wanted to build a bridge between the old and the new." To that end SCAD has functioned as a virtual preservation society—the school’s repurposed edifices range from the Clarence Thomas Center for Historic Preservation, set in an erstwhile Franciscan orphanage and convent, to the international student center Habersham Hall, a stucco Moorish Revival–style building that was once the Chatham County Jail. "Admirably, SCAD has restored some buildings that were either not that great or not that ancient," says Bob Christian, a decorative painter and furnituremaker (and brother of Architectural Digest design editor Howard Christian) whose works can be found at the Julia Christian Gallery , a space he runs with his wife. "They’ve been very creative in taking on neglected structures in overlooked neighborhoods."

Berendt’s book depicted a populace that reacted to the rare interloping Yankee with disdain, wonder, or a mixture of both. Ironically, that same book turned the spotlight on Savannah’s copious charms and launched a migration that has yet to cease. And for tourists, transplants, and locals alike, the city’s offerings are increasingly cosmopolitan.

Savannah’s restaurant scene, which had long trailed that of Charleston, South Carolina, its sister city to the north, now has a critical mass of compelling options. Topping the list is the Florence , a refined Italian spot that opened in June. Helmed by star Georgia chef Hugh Acheson, it is Chewning’s new favorite for dinner. Other highlights are the brasserie-inspired Circa 1875 , the market-to-table bistro the Sapphire Grill , and Local 11 Ten , which serves updated Southern cuisine and features a popular rooftop bar, Perch. Classic joints are also holding their own. On weekend mornings Chewning breakfasts at Clary’s Cafe , a diner dating from 1903, which, he says, has " the best homemade corned beef hash."

Given the city’s enthusiastic response to the Florence, Acheson is already pondering a follow-up restaurant—one that would take advantage of the area’s vast bounty of seafood. (Savannah is only 12 miles from the Atlantic coast.) "The talk of the town is that there are a number of chefs now contemplating moves here," Acheson notes.

Though the city has many quaint guesthouses, more modern hotels have joined the mix. Acheson recommends the Andaz Savannah , a newly built 151-room property in the historic district. The 75-room Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront , a loft-style building with vibrant interiors, affords terrific water views from its top-floor lounge, Rocks on the Roof. For old-world appeal with up-to-date amenities, the recently restored Gastonian offers 17 rooms in two adjacent Italianate mansions near the 30-acre Forsyth Park.

Shopping opportunities also continue to multiply. Once-shabby Broughton Street is now home to such favorites as the eclectic furnishings-and-gifts emporium the Paris Market and the chic general store Sylvester & Co. Renowned Savannah cookbook author Libbie Summers adores Broughton standbys Chocolat by Adam Turoni , a source of delectable confections, and Leopold’s , for "some of the best ice cream in the country." For gifts, her go-to is shopSCAD , which showcases the work of the school’s students and teachers.

Meanwhile, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil continues to enthrall. The book is being adapted into a Broadway musical, with songs by the late Johnny Mercer, a hometown hero. If history is any indication, Savannah should once again prepare itself for the limelight.

Architects of rock, The Immediate Family, perform live and screen acclaimed documentary

Thomas Claxton ’s Me, Myself, and Us Concert Series focuses on the unsung session musicians behind some of the greatest songs and albums in rock history.

“I’ve always had a passion and a deep understanding for the guys, who in my mind, are the ones who make the gears turn, the unspoken heroes,” said Claxton, a Savannah-based singer-songwriter. “When it comes to mainstream audiences, the average person on the street might not be aware of how exactly a song and album came together. These guys are the ones who pull it all together.”

Claxton, partnered with Georgia Southern University and the Gretsch School of Music, is presenting a double dose of music history with a performance by The Immediate Family on April 25, followed by a screening of an acclaimed documentary about the band, " Immediate Family ", on April 26 with a Q&A with director Denny Tedesco and featuring a Masterclass with several members of the band.

The Immediate Family are considered “the sonic architects of the singer-songwriter era and beyond.” Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Watchel, Russ Kunkel, and Leland Sklar, along with Steve Postell, are legendary session musicians who, since the 1970s, have worked with a mindboggling list of artists including James Taylor, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Jimmy Buffet, Don Henley, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Warren Zevon, Phil Collins, and so many more.

Their music is so ubiquitous that it is almost impossible to turn on a radio or television, or go anywhere, without hearing a song that doesn’t have some of their fingerprints on it.

“Every time you hear a song you’re on when you go into a market, it makes you feel good,” said Kunkel over Zoom.

Kunkel and his band mates have been playing with each other in various configurations for decades, but The Immediate Family, formed in 2018, marked the first time the longtime friends came together to write and record their own music. You could almost call the industry legends a super group.

“We think of ourselves as SUPER, but not necessarily as a super group,” said Kortchmar. “I think we all knew we loved each other right away. We all got along like a house on fire. Of course, Russ and me had been together for years before that and we knew each other really well, but when Waddy came on…it’s impossible not to love Waddy. He’s lovable in the extreme and a wonderful musician.”

Waddy Wachtel is currently on tour with Stevie Nicks, so unfortunately, he won’t be appearing at the Thomas Claxton event. In his stead, special guest Elliot Easton of The Cars will join The Immediate Family on stage.

“Elliot Easton is a wonderful musician,” said Kortchmar. “I’ve always loved him from The Cars days because his lines on those records were really well thought out and perfect for the song. Of course, that’s what we’re about—playing stuff that is right for the song.”

Kunkel added, “We love him, and we get to play some Cars songs, which, that’s not hard work. That’s fun.”

Besides a few Cars songs, The Immediate Family will also play material off of their own albums—including their recent record,  Skin in The Game —as well as many of the classic songs by iconic artists that they collaborated on.

Kortchmar describes The Immediate Family as “a cover band that plays all original material.”

“Everything we play, we wrote it, we produced it, played on it, toured it, recorded it, so everything we play we have a close connection to,” explained Kortchmar. “Most of it we co-wrote with some of our fabulous friends.”

The Immediate Family follow in the tradition of The Wrecking Crew, who were session musicians responsible for helping shape the sound of popular music in the 1960s and '70s. ( Immediate Family  director Denny Tedesco produced a documentary about them, as well.) The difference is, while the members of The Wrecking Crew remained mostly unknown to regular listeners, The Immediate Family gained broader recognition thanks to having their names credited on the backs of record covers.

“That came from our dear, dear, friend Peter Asher, and our other dear, dear pal, Lou Adler,” said Kortchmar. “We did  Tapestry  and Peter and Carol [King] decided to put all our names on the album cover. So, this album comes out and its huge, it goes crazy. Unlike the Wrecking Crew, our names were on there. Who were these cats that played on this monstrously hit record? It helped us tremendously.”

The Immediate Family were fortunate to come up in a music era that doesn’t really exist in the same way anymore.

“The session scene is totally different now,” said Kunkel “The amount of work there is for really good musicians that just came out of some school is slim to none. The only things out there are live performance gigs and if you’re fortunate enough to get in a band and get out and play live, you can do that, but most of the studios we worked with over the years closed and there are only a handful of the really good ones left. It’s changed drastically because a lot of people are making music in their bedroom on a computer. We  were  in the golden age of recording, for sure.”

The  Immediate Family  documentary currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Tedesco’s film follows a natural progression from his Wrecking Crew documentary and helps connect many dots for music fans and paint a detailed picture of their contribution to some of the best music of the '70s and '80s.

“I was most interested in how ‘civilians’ would react to the film,” said Kortchmar. “Our friends and people in the industry saw it and loved it and we knew that, but people who had no skin in the game at all came to see it and loved it. It’s just astonishing that this document exists and we’re very proud of it.”

Kunkel added, “Documentaries are kind of like lifting up a stone. They bring to light something that was not necessarily visible. Everybody in the world knows Phil Collins and James Taylor and Carol King, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, and all the people that participated in the documentary, but what Denny was able to do was show that, if they were the pearls, we were the string that connected all those things together. I think that is what was interesting to the civilians.”

With a new album and documentary, The Immediate Family continue to build upon their already rich legacy. Don’t miss seeing these living legends perform this week.

“I think there is a terrific story to be told in our film, and the album is indicative of what we can do and what we love to do,” said Kortchmar.
