Is orinoco delta tour for me.

Our private transport will pick you up at the door of your hotel or home in Caracas to take you to the Maiquetía National Airport where you will take a flight to Maturin or Puerto Ordáz of 1 hour aprox. There, a transport will pick you up to take to Boca de Uracoa in the state of Delta Amacuro a 2 and a half hours from the airport. Upon arrival, a speedboat will be waiting for you to take you to the lodge. You will navigate for 50 minutes until we reach the Lodge

After breakfast, and depending on your personalized itinerary, you will go out to explore the area and enjoy its natural and cultural wealth. Depending on your choice, you can also take walks to see the sunrises and sunsets during the days of your stay

Likewise, after the guided excursions you can freely explore the river by boat or kayak or even enjoy the camp facilities

The natural diversity is so vast that on the same tour you can see jungles with palm trees, swamps, mangroves inhabited by all kinds of animals, from jaguars, capybaras, howler monkeys, manatees and dolphins to birds and reptiles of all kinds.

At the time of your return you will have all the private transportation services, including the transfer from the Maiquetía National Airport to your home or hotel.

Making the Orinoco Delta River Trip a Reality

Let Angel-Eco Tours be your guide on a two or three day exploration of the dazzling Orinoco River Delta ecosystem. The Orinoco River spawns more than 300 tributaries that snake through a vast landscape, creating one of the world’s largest wetlands where birds and wildlife are abundant. The Orinoco Delta’s bird life includes anhingas, cormorants, brown pelicans, bitterns, herons, hawks, ospreys, toucans, macaws, hummingbirds, kingfishers and parrots. You will also see an unforgettable array of wildlife, including possibly caiman, manatees, anacondas, dolphins, capuchin and red howler monkeys.

Few people are lucky enough to be able to experience such an array of exotic creatures in such a stunning and immense ecosystem. The Orinoco Delta is one of the largest intact and unspoiled wetlands in the world. With the exception of the town of Tucupita, the Orinoco Delta is a glorious expanse of forest, water and sky.

Although bird watching and nature photography are at the heart of this “river cruise” vacation package from Angel-Eco Tours, you will also have the unique opportunity to interact with the Warao Indians. The Warao number over 20,000, and they are known as skilled fisherman and hunters who live in wooden dwellings called palafitos that are constructed on stilts over the water. The Warao are also gifted craftsmen who make elaborate figures carved from balsa and intricate baskets and hammocks woven from the leaves of moriche palms. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to journey to a pristine jungle village and experience the traditional culture of a native tribe.

This Orinoco River trip also includes relaxed walking and optional swimming opportunities.

2 days tour: Orinoco Delta + Canaima + Angel Falls

This tour package starting from your hotel on Isla Margarita or in Caracas brings you first to the Orinoco Delta , where you will explore the wildlife and indigenous communities, then to the Canaima National Park with its beautiful lagoons and famous waterfalls. The tour ends after a flight over Angel Falls at your hotel.

Daily Itinerary

Leaving early in the morning from your hotel to board a flight from Porlamar to the mainland (Maturín or Puerto Ordaz), we start our great adventure to discover two magical places in our country. From the airport a transport unit will take us to a dock in the Orinoco Delta where we will embark a boat, which will take us to our overnight camp. After lunch and a little rest, we will explore the Delta area. Depending on the camp, various activities such as visiting an indigenous community, wildlife watching, jungle walk, watch the spectacular sunset, a walk to see nocturnal wildlife or a tasty dip in the Orinoco, will be held.

The next day we leave early, first by boat, then bus to board a flight to Canaima (from Maturín or Puerto Ordaz). Arriving in Canaima National Park, we will tour the Laguna de Canaima to Salto Sapo, to other waterfalls known as La Golondrina, Axe and Ucaima. Concluding the tour, we will have time to enjoy a lunch and walk a little through the indigenous community in the area, before returning in the afternoon to the island of Margarita. If weather conditions permit, we will fly over the Angel Fall, the highest waterfall in the world with almost 1000 meters of free fall from the imposing Auyantepuy, before returning to Margarita Island in the afternoon, stopping in Maturín or Puerto Ordaz.

Amaneceres y atardeceres espectaculares, disfrutaras de una pequeña selección, tanto de los bosques de manglares, palafitos y asentamientos indígenas, así como la flora y la fauna en su forma original y además estos inolvidables puestas de sol en un afluente del Orinoco.

• Emocionante recorrido del Rio el Morichal Largo   en curiara, Unidades de transporte fluviales tipicas de la zona.
• Visita a Comunidad Warao : conoce el encanto de etnia nativa, donde aprenderas sobre su forma de vida y el proceso de elaboracion de sus hermosas artesanias con fibras narurales de la palma de moriche. Podras compartir y adquirir piezas de artesania.
• Visita a playa de Agua Dulce:  Luego de la caminata por la selva, Refrescate y Relajate con un chapuzon en una "playita"  natural de agua dulce.
• Atardecer en el Caño Manamo: Cerraras tu excursion con un hermoso y placido atardecer en el gran caño Manamo, donde podras avistar delfines de agua dulce asomadose en la superfice del rio.

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Venezuela, the Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve and its associated national parks form a vast and diverse ecosystem of immense ecological and cultural significance. Designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009, this region represents a unique confluence of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine environments, harboring an extraordinary array of flora and fauna.

The Biosphere Reserve and National Parks

Established in 2009, the Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve spans an impressive 1,125,000 hectares (2,780,000 acres), making it the largest protected area within the delta region. It encompasses the protected core zones, buffer areas, and transition areas, offering a comprehensive approach to conservation.

Delta del Orinoco National Park

At the heart of the reserve lies the Delta del Orinoco National Park, covering an area of 331,000 hectares (818,000 acres). This park serves as a sanctuary for the region's most fragile and biodiverse ecosystems, safeguarding them from human encroachment and exploitation.

Turuïpano and Mariusa National Parks

Complementing the Delta del Orinoco National Park are the Turuïpano and Mariusa National Parks. The Turuïpano National Park, spanning 72,600 hectares (179,400 acres), protects the northern extent of the delta region. The Mariusa National Park covers 265,000 hectares (655,000 acres) along the northern coastal delta, including the smaller outliers of the ecoregion along the Maracao River.

Geomorphology and Hydrology

The orinoco delta: a dynamic ecosystem.

The Orinoco Delta is a highly dynamic and complex fluvial-marine sedimentary basin formed during the Holocene epoch. Its sediments are primarily deposited by the mighty Orinoco River, along with contributions from other rivers and currents draining from the surrounding plains. This intricate network of waterways has created a mosaic of mangroves, swamp forests, moist forests, grasslands, and shallow aquatic ecosystems.

A Labyrinth of Channels

A series of fluvial and tidal channels crisscross the delta, dividing the vegetation into a patchwork of distinct habitats. These channels play a crucial role in shaping the landscape and facilitating the exchange of nutrients and species between the terrestrial and aquatic realms.

The Orinoco Delta Ecoregion

The Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve and its associated national parks are part of the larger Orinoco Delta Swamp Forests ecoregion , which extends across the coastal plains of northwestern Venezuela and northeastern Guyana. This ecoregion is characterized by a unique blend of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including:

Swamp Forests

As the name suggests, the Orinoco Delta Swamp Forests ecoregion is dominated by extensive swamp forests that thrive in the delta's constantly inundated or seasonally flooded delta areas. These forests are adapted to fluctuating water levels and play a crucial role in regulating water flow, preventing erosion, and providing habitat for a wide range of species.

Flooded Grasslands (Orinoco Wetlands)

Adjacent to the swamp forests are the Orinoco Wetlands, which consist of vast expanses of flooded grasslands. These wetlands are an essential breeding ground for many aquatic species and serve as a stopover for migratory birds, contributing to the region's remarkable avian diversity.

Mangrove Forests

Along the coastal fringes of the delta, mangrove forests thrive in the brackish waters where the Orinoco River meets the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. These unique ecosystems act as natural barriers against coastal erosion and storm surges while providing nursery habitats for various marine species.

The Orinoco Delta Swamp Forests ecoregion is a remarkable example of nature's resilience and adaptability, where diverse ecosystems coexist and support an incredible array of life forms. Venezuela safeguards its biological wealth and the vital ecological services these ecosystems provide by protecting this ecoregion through the Delta del Orinoco Biosphere Reserve and its national parks.

Biodiversity: A Spectacle of Life

The Delta del Orinoco region boasts a remarkable diversity of plant life, with over 2,000 species documented within its boundaries. Among the dominant species are Machaerium lunatum, Motrichardia arborescens, Ludwigia spp., Mikania congesta, and various bignoniaceas climbers. Additionally, floating prairies formed by Eichhornia crassipes and E. azurea add to the region's botanical richness.

The terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Delta del Orinoco are home to a wealth of animal life, including:

• Mammals: Over 151 species, such as the endemic Dasyprocta guamara (a type of agouti).
• Birds: A staggering 464 species, including the endemic Picummus nigropunctatus (a type of woodpecker) and Dendrocincla fuliginosa deltana (a type of woodcreeper).
• Reptiles: 76 species, including the endemic Anolis deltae (a type of anole lizard).
• Amphibians: 39 species.
• Fish: 210 species, supporting a thriving fishing industry.

Invertebrates

The Delta del Orinoco is also home to many invertebrates, which are essential food sources and economic resources for local communities. These include mollusks like Crassostrea virginica (oyster), Melongena melongena, and Pomacea ursus (guarura), as well as crustaceans such as shrimps (Macrobrachium carcinus, Macrobrachium surinamicum, Macrobrachium amazonicum) and crabs (Litopenaeus schmitti and Xiphopenaeus kroyeri).

Indigenous Communities and Resource Utilization

The eastern delta region has the most indigenous Warao settlements, comprising approximately 20,000 inhabitants. These communities have traditionally relied on the delta's abundant resources for their livelihoods, engaging in fishing, hunting, forestry product harvesting, and handicraft production.

You will witness the change of mangrove trees to a diversity of treesand palms. This area is rich in tropical FAUNA as well: parrots, tucans,macaw, hawks, boas (python), jaguar, panther, pirannas.... A bilingualtour-guide will go along and he will explain you the secrets of this naturalworld.

• 7:30 AM - departure from Margarita's Airport
• Arrival in Tucupita, boat ride (2 hr.) through the Manamo River.
• Arrival at the Delta Lodge.
• Cabins, double room each with private bath-room.
• Build in the Warao Indian style but comfortable.
• Wood floors & walls, while the roof is made out of leaves from palm trees "Tamiche".
• Once we have our cabin, we will give it a shot by fishing "piranhas".
• Lunch: beef - fish - chicken.

• Back to the camp for sunset.

Una gran variedad de menús que no son de ninguna manera la rutina recibida en la mayoría de los campamentos. Delta del Orinoco

Bendecido por la naturaleza, el Delta del Orinoco nos lleva a explorar una asombrosa biodiversidad bañada por las aguas de uno de los ríos más grandes del mundo, a rodearnos de paz y a recibir una cálida sonrisa de sus principales pobladores “los Waraos”.     El Parque Nacional Delta del Orinoco se presenta como un territorio boscoso de agua, conocido por sus nativos, los indígenas Waraos como “Mariusa ” . Visitar este parque nacional es alejarse del mundo y sumergirse en una selva con cientos de caminos de agua, que te permitirán conectarte con uno de los ecosistemas en su estado más puro, mientras te relajas con el sonido de la naturaleza y te dejas sorprender por la diversidad de su vida silvestre.   Este asombroso laberinto de ríos está formado por la desembocadura del Río Orinoco, aguas que van a parar hasta el Océano Atlántico. Su nombre Delta (o caños) hace homenaje a los incontables canales, caños y cañitos de agua que se forman al paso del río, convirtiéndolo en un territorio ideal para el turismo de aventura.

Río Orinoco, el tercer río más caudaloso del mundo

¿Si tuvieras la oportunidad de conocer a uno de los ríos más importantes del mundo lo pensarías? ¡Seguro que no!

El Río Orinoco no solo forma parte de una de las cuencas más importantes de Venezuela, sino que también es el cuarto río más largo de Sudamérica y como si eso no fuera poco, debido a su gran volumen de agua, lo convierte en el tercer río más caudaloso del mundo ¡Increíble pero cierto! Tanto es así, que Cristóbal Colón al llegar a la desembocadura del río quedó impresionado y pensó que era parte del mar.

Esta riqueza hidrológica es catalogada no solo como un río; sino, como un sistema en su conjunto que le da a Venezuela comunicación directa con el Océano Atlántico y la hace rica en minerales y otras actividades económicas. No hay palabras que describan de manera exacta lo imponente que es, un escenario lleno de belleza turística y paisajística.

Biodiversidad en el Orinoco

El Delta del Orinoco es una región rica en biodiversidad debido a su ubicación en la desembocadura del río Orinoco en el Océano Atlántico. Esta región cuenta con una gran variedad de hábitats, incluyendo manglares, selvas inundadas, ríos y estuarios, lo que permite la presencia de una gran cantidad de especies animales y vegetales.

Entre las especies animales que se pueden encontrar en el Delta del Orinoco se incluyen mamíferos como delfines de río, manatíes, monos aulladores y jaguares, reptiles como caimanes, serpientes y tortugas, y una gran variedad de aves acuáticas como garzas, flamencos y pelícanos.

En cuanto a la flora, los manglares son una de las especies vegetales más representativas de la región. Estos bosques de mangle tienen una gran importancia ecológica, ya que funcionan como barrera contra la erosión costera y son el hogar de una gran cantidad de especies animales, incluyendo peces y crustáceos.

Es uno de los destinos más vírgenes de Venezuela

¿Te apasiona conocer lugares donde el hombre aún no ha intervenido de ninguna manera? Aunque eso ya es casi imposible, te alegrará saber que el Delta del Orinoco es uno de esos rincones que aún no han sido considerablemente modificados por el ser humano.

Demás está decir que es un rincón único en el mundo que te permite aislarte del estrés de la ciudad y entrar en un territorio donde solo eres tú y la naturaleza. Su rica y variada biodiversidad se encuentra caracterizada por una vegetación de selva y manglares casi puros donde albergan una gran variedad de especies animales.

Y si tú eres amante de los atardeceres te encantará saber que ¡te aguardan los mejores! Solo bastará con sentarte en una canoa y ver como empieza a pintarse el cielo de color naranja y comienzan a aparecer nubes un poco rosadas, mientras las aves cantan regresando a su nido. ¡Te garantizamos que justo en ese momento todas tus preocupaciones desaparecerán!

Waraos: gente de canoa

Los Warao son un grupo étnico indígena que habita en el Delta del Orinoco, en Venezuela, así como en algunas partes de Guyana. Su nombre se traduce como “gente de canoa” en su lengua materna.

Los Warao son conocidos por su habilidad en la construcción de canoas y viviendas en los manglares del Delta del Orinoco. Su economía se basa en la pesca, la caza y la recolección de productos naturales como frutas y madera.

La sociedad Warao es matrilineal, lo que significa que la línea de descendencia se sigue a través de las mujeres. Las mujeres tienen un papel central en la toma de decisiones y en la organización de la comunidad. La religión Warao está basada en el animismo, que cree que los objetos y seres naturales tienen un espíritu o alma.

Los Warao han enfrentado numerosos desafíos a lo largo de los años, incluyendo la pérdida de sus tierras debido a la expansión de la agricultura y la explotación de recursos naturales, así como la discriminación y la marginación. A pesar de esto, la cultura Warao ha sobrevivido gracias a la resistencia y la adaptación de la comunidad, así como a la protección y promoción de sus derechos por parte de organizaciones indígenas y de derechos humanos.

Los Waraos son uno de los pueblos indígenas más antiguos de Venezuela; por lo que, visitarlos, conocer su cultura y su modo de vida es obligatorio en tu visita por el Delta del Orinoco, seguro también te ofrecerán degustar de su mesa un rico gusano de moriche asado ¿lo probarías?

El delfín de agua dulce más grande del mundo

Siendo un río tan importante no nos sorprende que en el albergue haya una de las especies de mamíferos únicas en el mundo, nos referimos al delfín rosado o también llamado por los nativos “Tonina”.

El delfín rosado ( Inia geoffrensis ) es una especie única, nativa del río Orinoco y Amazonas que habitan en aguas limpias y se caracterizan precisamente por su color rosado o poco grisáceo, el peso de los machos adultos puede llegar a los 185 kilogramos llegando a medir casi 3 metros, con una esperanza de vida de 10 a 30 años. Aunque es una especie en peligro de extinción, seguro que tendrás la oportunidad de apreciar a estos mamíferos en su hábitat natural sin ponerlos en peligro.

¿Te gustaría ver a estos delfines de agua dulce más grandes del mundo? Por eso, este destino sigue siendo imperdible para ti, y tener la oportunidad de conocer a este mamífero te impresionará. Son tan amistosos que a los turistas les alegran el día, pues al ver una canoa, bote o lancha se acercan regalando bailes y jugando entre ellos con ramas o palos ¿te animas a dejarte cautivar?

"Caiman del Orinoco" , el cocodrilo más grande de Sudamérica

A los amantes de los reptiles les alegrará saber que en este acaudalado río se aloja el mayor depredador de América Latina, el cocodrilo del Orinoco también llamado “Caimán del Orinoco” o “Caimán llanero” . Esta extraordinaria especie se caracteriza por tener un hocico mucho más delgado que los de su especie y por tener un tronco bastante robusto, llegando a medir nada más y nada menos que 7 metros.

¿Te imaginas tener a tu lado un cocodrilo de 7 metros? Sin duda, sería algo muy impresionante. Y es precisamente su tamaño lo que hace a esta especie bastante única e interesante, convirtiéndolo en un reptil que todo amante de lo extremo quiere conocer.

Aunque se encuentra en peligro de extinción y en la actualidad no se han dejado ver cocodrilos de estos tamaños tan impresionantes, aún se pueden realizar expediciones para apreciar a estas especies en su entorno natural.

Importante acotar que esta especie no se ve en el Delta del Orinoco! Es muy fácil de ver en nuestro tour a Los Llanos de Venezuela. 

Una tierra de leyendas y mitos

El río Orinoco y el Delta están envueltos de leyendas y mitos que “Los Waraos”, sus principales pobladores, mantienen con el pasar de las generaciones y siempre están dispuestos a contárselas a los que los visitan.

Uno de los mitos más populares señala a una piedra llamada “La Piedra del Medio”, donde los indígenas aseguran que a los pies de esa piedra habita una serpiente gigante de 7 cabezas que si es liberada formará grandes torbellinos hundiendo a cualquier persona, canoa, curiara o barco que se encuentre pasando por la orilla del río Orinoco.

La leyenda de amor del río Orinoco y el río Caroní también es muy contada, ya que se puede apreciar que estos dos ríos al encontrarse solo llegan a juntarse unos centímetros y forman un lago de colores. Los indígenas de la región cuentan que las aguas de color turbias y terrosas que emana el río Orinoco guarda calor (representa al hombre), mientras que las aguas de color azul oscuro del río Caroní significan sentimientos muy fuertes (representa a la mujer). Donde una noche, decidieron sellar su amor con un beso y el Océano Atlántico los llevo entre sus corrientes de agua consumando su romance por toda la eternidad.
