Here’s Your Sneak Peek Inside this Vintage Cardinal!
Mar 27, 2021
What type of tent/vehicle/RV/Travel Trailer do you have?
My travel trailer is a 14-foot 1963 Cardinal vintage camper.
How do you describe your “camp style”?
Casual Glamping. I like pretty things while camping. I enjoy my metal silver coffee percolator and my little milk pitcher set up on the picnic table with other vintage finds.
What concept or elements influence your style?
The concept or elements of my style come from my camper’s name, Cat’s Cottage. It feels like a little cottage. I love warm fabrics, cozy quilts and items found while antiquing. I love the color of my cushions. It makes me smile.
Have you made any style mistakes, and if so, what did you learn?
Yes! Bringing way too much stuff for a short trip or a weekend. I do not want to spend an hour setting up my camper and then unpacking. If I forget anything, there is always a girlfriend or friendly camper nearby who can help.
What advice or encouragement can you offer Girl Campers who are developing their camp style?
Whether you are in an RV, tent or the back of a truck, find what makes you happy. You do not have to do everything at once. If you like to hike or enjoy campfires, use those for your camp style themes.
Many thanks to Carol Thompson, our Chapter Guide for Central-Southern New Jersey, for sharing her vintage cottage on wheels!

Specifications Definitions
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.
UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.
CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.
Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.
The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

The trailer's name honored the Northern Cardinal in its logo, color palette, and even the shape of later models. Cardinal vacation trailers were small, lightweight, and easy to tow. They displayed a sense of style by incorporating sporty lines and bold graphics just like these mug's illustrations.

Vintage Trailers VINS and Serial Numbers
The first thing to understand, a serial number is your VIN for a Vintage Trailer. Those terms are used interchangably and the DMV has a hard time with this because they don’t normally deal with vehicles that are this old. They will ask you for the VIN and expect a modern format but vintage trailers used serial numbers. You may have to educate your DMV employee.
Secondly, not all serial numbers have any intelligence built into the code but some brands do. They might embed the length of the trailer or the year of the trailer in the serial number. You’ll see an example of that below. Some vintage trailer brand’s serial numbers are just sequential numbers and you might have to find someone else that has a serial number that is close to yours to estimate the year of the trailer.
To figure out what kind of trailer you have, you need to find serial numbers, VIN, markings, makes/manufacturers of equipment, paperwork – anything that could be a clue. Here is video on uncovering VINs on tongues
Serial numbers are frequently found on the tongue rail on the passenger side. (Usually on top, but may be on the drivers side or the side of the rail). Use paint remover or sand lightly to uncover the numbers. The first two digits may be letters that identify your make, followed by the year, length and number of production. Example: Serial number (or VIN number): MR 57 25 123 is a Monterey, 1957, 25′ number 123.
You can also find it, sometimes but not always, inside a cabinet or entry screen door. The metal plate with the VIN number can be found on the trailer tongue, frame rail leading to the hitch or it could be stamped on some metal part of the frame.
VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States. From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers , so different manufacturers used different formats. Earlier than 1981 – the serial number from the manufacturer is consider the VIN .
This is NOT a serial number – this is a patent number of the tongue manufacturer. Marvel was a supplier of lots of parts to most trailer brands. Lots of people get confused thinking this is their serial number but it’s not.
This is a serial number and it is an intelligent one as well. The first part 160, means it is 16’0” in length. Notice the punch separator. The 2nd part is the sequential number used that year. They probably started at 1000 and this trailer is the 25th made. Again the punch separator. The 3rd part is the year the trailer was made – it’s a 1967. Wouldn’t it be nice if every serial number gave you this much information!
Also – there are plenty of homebuilt trailers out there – you might have one. If so, your not going find any information on it. It could just be a custom one-of-a-kind!
