Collecting and Reading with DEVONthink

I read a lot. Until recently that included Twitter. To replace that source of information, I’ve shifted to other, more curated, sources like my RSS reader.

I’m a big fanatic for Pinboard. It’s almost completely plain, minimally styled, text on a blank page. I capture every web link that I find interesting right into Pinboard. I also use it as a reading list. It’s great. 1

I was asked on Twitter about using DEVONthink (DT) as an RSS reader or Pinboard alternative. 2 Before Pinboard I used DEVONthink and it was great for archiving web content. I even used DT as an RSS reader for a long time after I gave up on NetNewsWire. I don’t think I’d be able to switch my entire bookmarking activity to DEVONthink simply because I’m on Windows during the day and have no access to DEVONthink there. If I were Mac and iOS only, this could be a great system.

Adding an RSS feed to DEVONthink can only be done on the Mac right now. The same goes with refreshing the feed content. This is a major barrier for some folks that are iOS only. Hopefully this changes soon.

On the Mac, just add a new RSS type document and provide the feed address.

DEVONthink will download each article and display them in a nicely formatted view. Even better, if I mark the feed document with a “read_later” tag, each article will also get the same tag. While I’m reading on the Mac, I can archive the document for off-line storage and search.

If I’m in Safari, I can use the web clipper to capture a page in several different formats and apply tags along the way too.

When I was using DEVONthink as a feed reader and article filing system my favorite thing was the intelligence built into the app. Not only was searching very easy but it was more powerful. The boolean search operators were far more effective than anything I can now do on Pinboard. The “See Also” system in DT is unlike anything I’ve ever used. This was particularly useful when I had a large collection of web pages in my archive. If one page wasn’t exactly what I wanted, the “See Also” score often pointed me to the right one.

Syncing from Mac to iOS works well in DEVONthink. The read status is updated and I can create archives of pages. As mentioned above, DEVONthink on iOS can not update an RSS feed document on its own. It can only sync the articles from the Mac. This is probably a bigger barrier for me than even the lack of access on Windows. I’m often on my phone and want feeds to update wherever I am.

The article view on iOS is satisfactory. It’s not as nice as a dedicated reader but it works. The real benefit is in the built in capture tools in DEVONthink To Go. While reading an article I can quickly capture it for off-line archiving right within the app. Not only are there several options but I can also edit the meta data along the way which benefits future searching.

Unfortunately, I don’t think DEVONthink for iOS is ready to be my RSS reader. It’s still a terrific place to archive pages and bookmarks though. The search operators still work in iOS and the extension is a very convenient way to capture a lot of different content. Web pages can be captured as archives or as Markdown pages with reference links back to the original source.

After a bit of bending over backwards to make this work, I don’t think I can use DEVONthink for a complete bookmarking or feed reading solution. I think it’s great for selective archiving of web content that I’m confident I’ll want to look up later. I use the Mac and iOS applications quite a bit when I’m researching how to build a fence or what the best new T.V. is, but I don’t think I’d want to archive every web page I read in DEVONthink. I’m a bit on the fence here, though. With a few more features in the iOS app I I’d be all in with DEVONthink for bookmarking. Grouping web archives with bookmarks and text notes with a inside a folder structure is a great argument in favor of DEVONthink. I’ll keep using Pinboard for bookmarks, Feedbin for RSS reading and DEVONthink for dedicated research work. We’ll see what 2017 brings. For now, I enjoyed the distraction of experimentation with a long-unchanged system.

Downloading DT

* Note: The Download links are available only on Mac web browsers, which are grayed out on Windows web browsers.  

* Free trial:  DT can be downloaded from the Download page on the DEVONtechnologies site.

• After the trial period of 30 days or 150 hours of runtime, whichever is later, it requires a license key.
• Each license comes with two seats, allowing two installs on different computers.

Installation

Installing DEVONthink

1. Once DT is downloaded, go to the Downloads folder on your Mac and double-click DEVONthink_3.dmg to install.

2.  Copy DT3 to the Applications folder.

3. Go to Applications , start DT3.

4. Once DT3 is started, select Install Add-Ons under the DEVONthink 3 menu ( DEVONthink 3 -> Install Add-Ons …). 

*Note: The Safari browser extension is installed by default in DT3, but you must get to Safari's Preferences > Extensions and enable it.

The following extension options are recommended as we notice some inconsistencies in using the browser extensions: 

5. Go to the quick access tool bar called “the Dock” at the bottom of the screen, and right-click Keep in Dock.

Age Requirement

For the safety and comfort of all our guests, children must be at least 4 years old to participate in the Classic Safari Adventure. Many of our Private Adventures are exempt from age restrictions.

Top Seat Height Requirement

For the safety of our guests, children 4 and up wishing to take a turn on the top seat must be at least  45 inches tall .

Gratuity and Tipping Policy

If you enjoyed your safari, feel free to tip your guide. They work hard and appreciate the recognition. Please Note : If you reserved a private vehicle or made a group reservation for 10 or more, a 10% service charge is included.

Cancellation Policy

We are more than happy to help you reschedule your exploration or provide you a gift card for the amount that was charged so that you can reschedule at your leisure. Please note that your gift card is entirely transferable, should you choose to gift it to a loved one or donate it to a charity or other organization instead.

Pets are not allowed at Safari West. If you have a pet that is not a service animal, we ask that you respect the important work of service animals by not claiming that your pet is a service animal. Please see the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) description of a service dog noted below. This is for your safety, as well as that of your pet, fellow guests and the animals of the Safari West collection. Please do not leave your pet locked in a parked car!

Service Animal Policy

We welcome guests with special needs who bring their service animal to enjoy our facility and the wonderful creatures making their homes here. Our policy is to assist all guests in making their time at Safari West enjoyable. A service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. “Companion” and “comfort” dogs are not “service animals” protected by the ADA.

• Service animals are permitted to visit Safari West. However, service animals are prohibited from all areas where our exotic collection is not separated from guests by a physical barrier.
• Service animals may also be restricted in certain areas due to the sensitivity of our animal collection.
• If you are spending the night, your service animal is allowed in one of our accessible tents.
• Your service animals are restricted from accompanying guests while on tour.
• Service animals must be housebroken.
• Service animals may not display vicious or aggressive behavior toward other people or animals. This includes barking and/or growling. If your service animal is disruptive at any time, you will be asked to remove your service dog from the park.

If you need to bring your service animal, call (707) 579-2551 at least 72 hours in advance to make arrangements.

Rules, Safety, and Etiquette

Safari West is the home of more than 800 wild animals, with all their natural behaviors and instincts. They are not trained pets, so we must act in accordance with their world rather than expecting them to understand ours. We are pleased to offer you a truly enjoyable and memorable adventure on the Sonoma Serengeti, so to get the most from your visit, please keep these few common-sense safety rules in mind and practice your wild manners.

Respect our Wild Friends

• Please stay at least three feet back from the animal enclosures.
• These animals are not to be touched . Be especially aware of children who may not understand that these animals are not like your pets at home. They may bite, kick or otherwise defend themselves if startled.
• If you see anyone harassing the animals, throwing objects or poking sticks into the animal enclosures, or teasing them in any way, please alert a staff member immediately.
• Never feed the animals. They eat special diets in the wild, and the Safari West animal staff sees that they enjoy the same appropriate foods here. Snacks that you love can be harmful to them.
• No running! The animals interpret running as a sign of danger and are likely to panic and hurt themselves.

Safari Truck Etiquette

We recycle! Throughout the lower area of the preserve are recycling bins. Please save your plastic water bottles, soft drink cans, and other recyclables until you can dispose of them in a bin. Children who wish to sit on the top of our double-decker truck must be at least 45 inches tall. Our guides stop occasionally along the drive to allow seat changes so that everyone who wants a top-tier ride will get a turn.

Lost and Found

Safari West is not responsible for lost items. Please keep a close eye on your belongings during the course of your stay as you will be exploring a large, mostly undeveloped preserve. Should you misplace an item, Safari West maintains a Lost and Found Location at the front office. Please check with us there if you should lose (or find) anything of value.

Welcome to Safari West!

We go to great lengths to ensure that our safari adventures are accessible to everyone and in compliance with all ADA requirements. If you or a member of your family have special needs due to mobility or sensory issues, please contact us and we’ll work with you to plan your safari excursion. Safari West is indeed a special place and we will do everything possible to provide our guests with equal enjoyment of the wonderful experience offered by our park.

Our classic safari vehicles are customized Dodge Power Wagons and are not ADA accessible and unfortunately are not equipped to handle wheelchairs or other mobility assisting devices. If a guest utilizing a wheelchair can safely transfer themselves unaided or with the assistance of a family member, friend, or personal assistant, the Classic Safari Tour remains a viable option.

For guests unable to transition into the Power Wagons, we are able to provide one customized vehicle capable of accommodating most wheelchairs. It requires advanced planning and has some restrictions on seating capacity. Please contact our reservations team at 707-566-3667 to discuss options.

We currently have two fully accessible tents on the property. Both rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and include appropriately equipped showers and bathroom fixtures. These rooms also feature designated parking spaces at the foot of the ramps for easy loading and unloading. They also benefit from close proximity to the restaurant, offices, and gift shop.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at Safari West; however, due to concerns about guest safety as well as the safety of the animal collection, service animals are restricted from all safari tours and anywhere where there isn’t a barrier between the collection and our guests. While service animals are welcome to join you in our overnight accommodations, they cannot join you on tour unless you have reserved a Service Animal Serengeti Trek. This variant on the paratransit Serengeti Trek foregoes the walking portion of the tour. Instead, it accesses as much of the lower grounds as possible from within the paratransit vehicle.

Hearing Impaired:

Because of the cost of live, on-demand certified interpreters, Safari West no longer pays for live, on-demand, in-person ASL interpreters.  However, guests with hearing impairments are welcome to bring their own live ASL interpreter and Safari West will waive the admission charge for the guest-provided interpreter.  Similarly, as a further reasonable accommodation, Safari West will provide a complimentary safari tour to a non-professional ASL signer for a hearing-impaired guest, e.g., friends or family members who sign for the guest.

Vision Impaired:

With advance notice, a tactile tour can be provided for a visually impaired guest. A sighted companion will almost always accompany a visually impaired visitor. Should this not be the case, the guest will be accompanied by one of our guest service personnel.

Safari West offers free parking to our guests. Our parking lot has several accessible parking spaces for disabled persons supplying a valid disability-parking placard. Additional reserved parking spaces for placarded vehicles may also be available upon arrival. While the view from the safari truck guarantees a great look at the herds, some animals need a more subtle approach. Come face-to-face with a black-and-white colobus monkey, search out a cleverly camouflaged cheetah and watch the courtly parade of flamingos around their lagoon home.

Bookmarklets Installation

I see references to these in the 3.8.1 update notes. I don’t understand how to install in a mobile browser, however. The posts I read are very dated…

Since 3.8.1 doesn’t run on mobile devices, how would installing a 3.8.1 bookmarklet in a mobile browser help you? Where is the captured content going to go?

Coincidently (probably?) the most recent version of DEVONthink ToGo for iOS is 3.8.1 and this mention of Formatted Note Bookmarklet is the first “new” item mentioned in the release notes. Frankly, I don’t know what it’s about.

it is for the URL handler as far as I know, so you can use it with x-callback for instance. There is now a new URL handler called createformatednote for shortcuts

It lost me after “But instead of…”

Bookmarklets are, technically, bookmarks that you add to, e.g., your browser’s bookmarks bar. But instead of opening a web page they open DEVONthink (To Go) with as much data that they can get from the viewed page which, in turn, creates a new document with it.

A bookmark takes you to the bookmarked page. A bookmarklet (attempts to) captures the current page and uses it to make a new document in DTTG.

That’s narrowing it down a bit too much. A bookmarklet is a JavaScript script that does whatever its programmer tells it to do. In the case of DT, that might be capturing the current page. But you could, for example, write a bookmarklet that removes all images from the current page or masks all swear words or whatever.

To use the bookmarklet from Safari iOS, when the page you want to get is open, tap in the url field and it opens the favorites and you can scroll and select it. (I had to ask ChatGPT how to do it).

The bookmarklet can be added from Safari macOS.

I know what a bookmarklet is. its basically scripts. But the release notes still confuses me, I dont know how DTTG is related to this and thats what the OP is asking too

but I think the below post makes it clear on how are they related

it is not confusing actually: a bookmarklet is java script and can be added to HTML.

• Start Safari new tab
• copy/past code to the URL in Safari
• Save as favourites

Once done - you can browse to the website you want in DTTG press on the URL to see your favourites and press on the favourite created in step 3. Then the website will be placed into a formatted note in DTTG (Global inbox)

Today DevonTechnologies sent out their latest newsletter in which the bookmarklet is mentioned again and advised over the share extension for iOS devices… so I gave it another try. Findings:

Safari on mobile doesn’t show the bookmarklets on the linked Extras page.

Firefox does when requesting the Desktop site.

Copying the script and add it manually to Safari doesn’t run the script, so I first bookmarked the Extras page. After that I manually modified the URL part of the bookmark.

After visiting a random website I’ve openend my bookmarks / favorites and clicked the bookmarklet. It asks to open DTTG as expected.

The clipper / new item window is opened… all fields blank… it doesn’t clip the visited website at all.

What am I doing wrong? And how could DT make this one work a bit simpler and smoother installation experience?

I’m not exactly a newbie when it comes to working with computers, mobile devices or understanding web technology, but from a user perspective this process does make any sense to me.

You can (in general) copy the code of a bookmarklet and paste it into the bookmark section of you browser. If you then open that bookmarklet like you’d open a bookmark, it is executed. A bookmarklet is never executed n without being told to open by the user. Is just JavaScript code.

Some points of attention:

The bookmarks panel should be selected to successfully drag (hold) and drop (tap with other finger to open the panel) it into the bookmarks and not the favorites panel. The latter doesn’t seem to work.

Clip as Web Archive and Selection seem to work just fine. The PDF (one page) results in an error ‘unknown URL parameters’ within DTTG.

I did, but that didn’t work. Maybe because I’d added the bookmark directly into my favorites / pinned bookmarks within Safari.
