Finland Visa Photo Size and Requirements in 2024

The Finland Visa Photo Size in 2024 is 35mm in width and 45mm in height.

This article discusses the required size and other critical criteria for Finland’s visa photo in 2024.

Finland Visa Photo Specifications

Standard photo size.

In 2024, the standard size for a Finnish visa photo is 35mm in width and 45mm in height. This size is consistent with other Schengen countries and is strictly adhered to.

It’s essential to ensure that the photo you submit adheres to these dimensions, as a photo that doesn’t meet the required size can lead to the rejection of the visa application.

Face Size and Position

The height of the face from chin to crown should be between 31-36 mm. This ensures that the face is neither too small nor too large in the photo.

The face should be centered in the image, maintaining a neutral expression.

Both eyes should be open, and the mouth should be closed.

The line of sight should be straight ahead, and the head should not be tilted in any direction.

Background Color and Quality

The background of the visa photo should be light grey or pale blue. It’s crucial that it’s uniform, without any shadows, patterns, or textures.

This uniform background ensures that the applicant’s face is the focal point, making facial recognition and verification more straightforward.

Additionally, the photo’s quality plays a pivotal role. It should be in focus, without any blurs, scratches, or marks. It’s recommended to get the photograph taken from a professional studio that understands visa photo requirements.

Other Important Specifications

  • Lighting : The face should be evenly lit, with no underexposed or overexposed areas. Shadows, especially under the eyes, should be avoided.
  • Eyes and Line of Sight : The eyes should be between 26-30 mm from the photo’s bottom. They should be open and level with each other. Glasses are allowed as long as they don’t cover the eyes, create reflections, or have tinted lenses. It’s recommended to avoid wearing glasses with thick frames.
  • Headwear : While hats or caps are not permitted, religious or medical headgear is allowed. However, it should not cover any part of the face, and the facial features from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and from ear to ear should be clearly visible.
  • Hair : Hair should not cover the face or eyes. If you have long hair, make sure it’s tucked behind your ears or tied back.
  • Expression : A neutral expression is required. That means no smiling, frowning, or raised eyebrows.
  • Quality : The photo should be printed on high-quality paper with a print resolution of 600 dpi, especially if taken with a digital camera. It should be free from underexposure or overexposure.
  • Recent Photo : The photograph should be recent, preferably not older than six months. This ensures that it represents your current appearance.
  • Children : Children, regardless of age, require their own passport and visa photos. The same standards apply, but there’s some leniency regarding the head’s position and face size.

4 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Navigating the visa application process can be daunting, and the last thing any applicant wants is to face rejection due to an incorrect photo size or specification. Some common mistakes include:

  • Incorrect Photo Size : Finland’s specific photo dimensions must be adhered to. Ensure the height and width align with the official requirements.
  • Old Photos : Using an outdated photo where the applicant’s appearance has significantly changed can result in rejection.
  • Improper Background : A non-neutral background or shadows can render a photo unacceptable.
  • Facial Expressions & Accessories : Smiling, frowning, or wearing sunglasses/hats (unless for religious/cultural reasons) can be grounds for rejection.

Digital vs. Printed Photos

As technology advances, visa applications often require or allow for digital photo submissions.

  • Resolution : Digital photos should be of high resolution, ensuring clarity but without increasing the file size excessively.
  • Format : Typically, JPEG or PNG formats are accepted, but always check specific guidelines.
  • Printed Quality : If printing a digital photo, ensure it is of high quality, devoid of pixelation or graininess.

Can I edit or retouch my visa photo?

In the age of Photoshop and digital enhancements, it’s tempting to edit or retouch visa photos. However:

  • Natural Appearance : Photos should reflect one’s natural appearance. Avoid using filters or modifications that significantly alter facial features.
  • Brightness/Contrast : Minor adjustments to the photo’s brightness or contrast might be acceptable as long as the face remains clearly visible and unaltered.
  • No Digital Alterations : Digital alterations, especially on facial features, are frowned upon. It’s vital that the photo remains a true representation of the applicant.

Always err on the side of caution. If in doubt about the acceptability of a retouched photo, consider submitting a natural one.

Special Considerations for Infants and Toddlers

Taking visa photos of young children presents unique challenges.

  • Photo Position : While it’s challenging, try to have the child’s face, especially their eyes, align with the required position. For infants, laying them on a white sheet and photographing from above might be easier.
  • Open Eyes : While preferred, it’s understood that getting a photo with an infant’s eyes open can be tricky. Finland’s visa processing unit is generally more lenient with such cases.
  • Neutral Expression : This is tricky with infants, but a neutral expression is preferred. Avoid photos where the child is crying or frowning.
  • Clothing : Dress children in simple outfits, avoiding patterns or logos that might distract from their face.

While it’s a bit more challenging to get a perfect shot with infants, understanding the nuances of the requirements can simplify the process.

Number of Photo Copies for Finland Visa Application

When applying for a Finland visa in 2024, the required number of photo copies is as follows:

  • Standard Requirement : Typically, you need to submit two identical photos along with your Finland visa application.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i wear glasses in my visa photo.

Yes, you can wear glasses, but ensure they don’t cause a glare or cover your eyes. Tinted glasses or sunglasses are not allowed unless you have a medical exemption.

Are selfies acceptable for visa photo requirements?

It’s not recommended to use selfies due to potential distortion and difficulty in meeting exact specifications. A photo taken by another person or by a professional is advisable.

What should I wear for the photo?

There’s no strict dress code, but it’s best to wear everyday attire. Avoid uniforms or clothes that resemble them. Also, avoid outfits with large patterns or logos as they can be distracting.

My religion requires me to wear headgear. Is it allowed in the visa photo?

Yes, Finland recognizes religious and cultural beliefs. You can wear headgear, but your full face (from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead) should be visible and evenly lit. Ensure the headgear does not cast shadows on your face.

How do I know my photo will be accepted?

The safest way is to adhere strictly to the guidelines provided and consider seeking services from a professional who is familiar with visa photo requirements. Some online tools and apps also help check if your photo meets visa specifications.

How recent should my visa photo be?

For most visa applications, your photo should be taken within the last six months to reflect your current appearance.

Can I smile in my Finland visa photo?

A neutral expression is preferred. Avoid wide smiles, frowning, or any exaggerated facial expressions.

How idPhotoDIY works

How to make Finland (Suomi) Visa photo online

Step 1: use a digital camera or a smartphone.

Find someone to take the photo for you and selfie photo is not acceptable for passport photo application. If you have a tripod, use it. A tripod will make it easier to keep the camera steady and level. The distance of the person to the camera should be around 1 meter.

Step 2: Find a venue with good lighting

When taking photo, you should face the light, such as a nice bright window or the door. This can provide even lighting to avoid shadows on the face and background. The face must be evenly lit. There should be no shadows and glares on the face.

Note: No need to worry about the background as our online passport photo generator will automatically remove or change the background for you.

Step 3: Wear properly for your passport photo

Do not wear uniforms. Wear regular street clothes in your photo.

Do not wear eyeglasses. If you wear glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses, take them off for your passport photo.

Your face must still be fully visible.  Don’t let your hair drape over your face and obscure your eyes. If you have very long bangs that cover your eyebrows, you should pin them back with bobby pins. It’s best if your ears show, as well, but that won’t cause your photo to be rejected.

No hats are allowed in passport photos unless it is religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke that you wear every day.

Step 4: Pose for a passport

Look straight towards the camera with face straight on. Head should not be tilted or rotated.

Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears.

Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

Position the camera in the same height as the head.

Step 5: Have a neutral facial expression

You can smile in your passport photos, but the government prefers that you have a neutral facial expression.

Biometric Passport Photo for Finland

A biometric passport photo for Finland is a specific type of photograph that meets the requirements for inclusion in a Finnish passport. These photos are used for facial recognition purposes, so they must be taken carefully and meet all the specifications.

Here are the detailed requirements for a biometric passport photo for Finland:

Size and dimensions

  • The photo must be 47 mm high and 36 mm wide (approximately 1.85 inches high and 1.42 inches wide).
  • The distance from the top of your head (without hair) to your chin should be between 32 mm and 36 mm (approximately 1.26 inches to 1.42 inches).
  • For children under 11 years old, the head size can be smaller, but it must be at least 25 mm (approximately 0.98 inches).

Other requirements

  • The photo can be in color or black and white.
  • The background must be plain white or light gray.
  • You must look at the camera with a neutral expression (no smiling or frowning).
  • Your mouth must be closed, and both eyes must be open and clearly visible.
  • You cannot wear any headwear except for religious headwear that you wear every day.
  • The photo must be recent and taken within the last 6 months.
  • The photo must be sharp and in focus and printed on high-quality photo paper.

Here are some additional tips for taking a biometric passport photo for Finland:

  • Stand against a plain white or light gray wall or backdrop.
  • Make sure there are no shadows on your face or background.
  • Have someone else take your photo so that you can ensure you are looking straight ahead and your expression is neutral.
  • If you are wearing glasses, make sure they do not cover your eyes.
  • If you have long hair, pull it back so it does not cover your face.

Finland Passport photo for kids and babies

Taking a passport photo for a kid or baby can be tricky, but with a few extra steps and patience, you can capture the perfect shot that meets all the Finland passport photo requirements.

General Requirements

  • Size and dimensions:  Same as adults – 47mm high x 36mm wide. Head size for children under 11 can be smaller (min. 25mm), but ensure their face fills most of the frame.
  • Background:  Plain white or light gray.
  • Expression:  Neutral, mouth closed, eyes open (even for young babies).
  • No headwear  (except religious), sunglasses, or distracting objects.
  • Recent photo:  Taken within the last six months.
  • Sharp and clear:  High-quality photo paper.

Tips for Kids

  • Engage them:  Talk to them, sing songs, or play peek-a-boo to keep them focused and looking at the camera.
  • Quick capture:  Have someone help you take multiple photos quickly to increase the chances of getting a good one.
  • Use props:  A favorite toy or blanket can help comfort and distract them momentarily.

Tips for Babies

  • Lay them down:  On a white sheet or blanket with their head slightly elevated.
  • Warm environment:  Keep them comfortable to avoid fussiness.
  • Natural light:  Use indirect sunlight for even illumination.
  • Multiple attempts:  Be patient and take plenty of photos, even if they’re not perfect.

Additional Considerations

  • For newborns:  If their eyes are closed, it’s generally accepted. Slightly open mouths are also okay.
  • Hairstyles:  Keep hair pulled back to avoid covering the face.
  • Digital photos:  If applying online, ensure they meet the specified format and size requirements.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when it comes to photos, it could be worth even more. A photo is a critical component of your application, and there are many things to keep in mind. For example, for a Finland residence 36x47 mm photo, size is just one of the many elements that must be taken into account.

Size and Dimensions

What size is a visa photo? Your Finland residence 36x47 mm photo size must be 36x47 mm. This means that your head must be between 35 and 36.75 mm from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.

The photo must be in color, but the colors must be natural and not altered or edited — any filters or effects that change them are forbidden.

Keep in mind that there should only be one subject in the photo, which is you. This means that no relatives, friends, or children should be in the frame. An acceptable Finland residence 36x47 mm photo should solely represent the person applying for the visa.

Head Size and Position

Aside from the specific measurements for a visa picture size, there are a couple more things to note. The head must be centered within the frame and take up 50-69% of the image, and the photo should be taken at eye level, i.e., at the same height as the applicant’s eyes.

The photo must be clear and in focus, with no blurriness or distortion. A blurry photo is a sure way to get your application rejected.

Visa photos must have been taken within the last six months. This ensures that the photo accurately represents your current appearance (hairstyle, weight, facial hair, etc.).

Background, Contrast, and Shadows

The background color of the photo should be plain white or off-white, so avoid using any patterned or colored backdrops. Other visa photo rules include sufficient contrast and no shadows on your face or behind your head. Ensure that your face and features stand out clearly in the photo and that the lighting is even.

You can smile, but it must be a natural smile rather than a big, toothy grin. Overall, the face should have a neutral expression, so don’t force a smile if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

Your eyes should be open and visible in the photo, with no hair, clothing, or other objects obstructing them. Remember that your eyes are very important for identification, so no closing, squinting, or hiding in any way. Also, you should be looking directly at the camera lens.

Red-eye will be considered a form of obstruction. To prevent it, avoid using the camera flash if possible because the light can reflect off the back of your retina and create a red reflection in your eyes. If you must use a flash, try looking slightly away from the camera.

If you normally wear glasses, you should wear them in your visa photo, too. Make sure that there is no glare or reflection on the lenses; it’ll be better if your glasses have an anti-reflective coating. The frames shouldn’t cover any part of your eyes, especially your pupils.

In case you have a medical condition that requires you to wear dark glasses or other eyewear, you’ll need a statement from your doctor.

Your entire face, including your forehead and eyebrows, should be visible in the photo. Therefore, most types of headgear, like hats or head scarves, aren’t permitted.

However, if you wear a head covering for religious reasons, it’ll be allowed in the visa photo as long as your face is still fully visible. For hats or head scarves worn for medical reasons, ask your doctor for an official statement.

Resolution and File Size

The ideal resolution for a visa photo is 600 x 600 pixels, and the acceptable size for the file is anything less than 240 kilobytes. For the right Finland residence 36x47 mm size, make sure to use a high-quality camera or smartphone — you’ll be able to crop it and still maintain the required resolution.

Attire, Clothing, and Dress Code

Wear everyday clothing that you would normally wear in public. This means you should avoid uniforms, costumes, or clothing that looks like a disguise. Also, choose clothing with a plain, solid-colored background over busy patterns or prints.

A beard or other facial hair is acceptable if it doesn’t prevent identification, but you should have roughly the same facial hair at the time you travel internationally.

A natural, everyday look is best for visa photos. Consider sticking to just a light foundation or concealer, little mascara, and a touch of lip color.

Studs or small hoops are a good choice, as they won’t detract from your face or hair.

The last thing worth mentioning about the main Finland residence 36x47 mm photo requirements is quantity. That’s simple enough — you’ll typically need to provide two identical photos.

Where Can I Get My visa Photo Taken?

One convenient option is our photo tool! PhotoGov will digitally process your visa photo to ensure it meets all of the department requirements.

Alternatively, if you prefer to have your photos taken offline, you can go to:

  • Photo studios
  • Post offices
  • Print and copy stores that offer visa photo services as well

Costco used to offer photo services, but unfortunately, they have closed their photo centers.

Finland residence 36x47 mm Photo Examples

In this section, let’s analyze some examples of acceptable and unacceptable visa photos.

Sample photos:

Below are examples of correct and incorrect photos

sample_photos

Requirements for Adults

For adults, the photo size must be 36mm x 47mm, with your head measuring between 35mm and 36.75mm from chin to crown. The background must be plain white or light gray, with no patterns, shadows, or unevenness. Your facial expression must be neutral with both eyes open and looking directly at the camera, and you cannot wear glasses or headwear except for medical or religious reasons. Your clothing should be plain and non-reflective, without any logos or slogans.

Photos of Babies and Children

Here are the steps to help you get a successful photo of your child:

  • Find a plain, light-colored backdrop to create a neutral background.
  • Position the child facing the camera. Make sure the child is facing the camera directly, with their head straight and eyes open.
  • Get down to their eye level.
  • Get the right distance. The child should be about 4 feet (more than 1 meter) away from the camera so that you can capture their full face.

Specifics according to the Religious Situation

If you have religious or cultural reasons for wearing headwear, it is allowed as long as it does not cover any part of your face. However, you should ensure that your face is clearly visible, and that the headwear does not cast any shadows on your face.

Can I Take a visa Photo with My Phone?

If you’re taking the photo yourself, here’s what you need to do:

  • Find a plain background with no harsh shadows.
  • Set up a tripod or stand for your phone.
  • Stand or sit straight with your shoulders back and look directly at the camera.
  • Make sure your face, from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, takes up around 50% of the photo. Having a little extra space will make it easier to adjust the dimensions.
  • Set up a timer ( iPhone or Android ) or use a remote control to take the photo.

Do I Need a New visa If My Appearance Has Changed

It depends. If your appearance has changed significantly enough that you can’t be identified from your current photo, you’ll need to get a new visa with the correct photo. For example, if you dyed your hair a completely different color, a photo with your natural hair color won’t do. But if you got a slightly different haircut, your current photo should still accurately represent your face.

US Passport Photo Size: Closing Thoughts

When it comes to taking visa photos, it’s easy to overlook the specific requirements. But these guidelines exist for a reason, and they will save you a lot of hassle and delay down the line. So, make sure you look directly into the camera with a full face and open eyes, wear normal clothes, and double-check the visa photo size requirements before sending off your application.

Also, avoid taking a selfie, wearing glasses or a uniform, using a colored background, retouching the photo or adding filters, having other people there, or using a damaged photo.

There is a way to ensure your photo is up to scratch - PhotoGov. The AI technology will accurately analyze and edit your photo and help you avoid the pitfalls of submitting an incorrect or low-quality image. With our photo service, you will take the guesswork out of the process and confidently submit your application with the perfect photo.

How to Get Your Finland residence 36x47 mm Photos Taken

Before you snap that selfie and upload it onto our visa photo maker, there are a few things you need to know. From choosing the right backdrop to perfecting your pose, you should consider everything.

Option 1: Visit a Professional Photographer

When you can make a visa photo online for free, there isn’t much equipment needed for the task. If you have a camera, great, but a smartphone with good photo quality will also do. Just take selfies in a well-lit room or ask someone to take your picture.

Option 2: Take Your Own visa Photos

A light solid scene helps keep your face the focus of the photo. It also makes it easier for facial recognition technology to identify you. Sure, our tool can adjust a few things here and there, but it’s always better to start with a good foundation of a white background right away.

Option 3: Use online-service

Ideally, you should use natural light for a visa photo at home. Take your photo near a window or outside on a sunny day but watch out for the shadows that come from direct sunlight. If natural light isn’t available, create a well-lit environment with artificial light sources like lamps or a ring light. When positioning your sources, experiment with different placements to achieve a flattering diffused effect.
