Distant Horizons

distant horizons travel

Distant Horizons specialises in organising small group, scholar-led visits to some of the more unusual places in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

All trips are led by distinguished scholars whose role is to provide the framework and background that encourages the traveller not just to experience but to breathe the culture and traditions of the country they are journeying through. While a number of informal lectures are given on each of their tours, it is very often the informal teaching, in the teahouse or in the monastery that really brings home the history and culture of the country and its people.

The travel experience is enhanced by using deluxe or best available facilities and organising special events such as meetings with local specialists or visits to private collections and houses.

Distant Horizons was established in 1996 and first worked with the University of Cambridge on a trip to Iran in 1998. They have worked with many of the world’s leading museums and societies both in the UK and USA, creating unique itineraries designed specifically for members of these organisations.

Sustainability and Responsible Travel

Distant Horizons is committed to following the model for Sustainable Tourism as defined by the UN World Tourism Organisation

“ Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communitie s”.

i choose distant horizons after discussing our trip with more than 10 tour companies. they seemed pleased to work with our group of 16 to provide the 14 day custom itinerary we wanted in cuba. they provided very detailed information regarding expectations, hotels, tours, restaurants and amenities. all paperwork was in order - this includes cuba visa, letter of authorization, list of hotels where we were staying, plane reservations, name and contact of tour guide, etc. we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of hotels, restaurants (included), bus condition, driver and tours. our speakers were excellent! and most of all our tour guide Javier spoke excellent english, was smiling all the time, answered questions all day and was with us at every turn. he provided excellent restaurant recommendations, worked hard to include every bit of itinerary even when things seemed to be changing all of the time and knew a huge amount of history of cuba. we had boat trip, snorkeling trips, bird watching, cigar rolling, historical tours, nostalgic car rides, dance rehearsals, choir performances, etc, etc, etc. Our days were full, interesting and enjoyable. we learned so much and left with a great feel for the country of cuba. distant horizons has excellent cuba connections, they know how to make a trip fun and interesting and they do it with your expectations in mind.

I called looking for a tour that they no longer offer. However, the amazing front desk person connected me to a tour rep Julie. Julie went out of her way to tell me of a tour company that would meet my needs and shared with me how to contact them. So nice of her- she took the time and trouble to truly help me - and I am not a current client. But given this level of consideration and helpfulness, you know I will this company in the future.

I recently returned from Saudi Arabia on a trip that Distant Horizons organized. It was an incredible experience from beginning to end. The hotels and the restaurants were wonderful choices but what made the trip so special was the itinerary Distant Horizons designed and the access to community and small business leaders, historians, Saudi & American government officials, independent journalists, and others. We experienced the astounding beauty of Al-Ula, the dramatic landscape of Asir province, the urban centers of Jeddah and Riyadh and ended with an incredible private visit at ARAMCO in Dammam.  My preconceived beliefs about this country were swept away by this trip. I have unequivocally never felt so welcomed by people and I am grateful to Distant Horizons for providing such a comfortable, well designed and well managed program. This is the 4th trip I have taken with Distant Horizons, and I highly recommend them to other travelers.

The Distant Horizons trip provides a glorious and eclectic adventure to even the most seasoned traveler. The guides, the sights, the accommodations all combined to offer a rich cultural experience. We did indeed enter the soul of Russia on this trip." Jeanie Goddard Needham, MA

No surprises! We just returned from Cuba on a person-to-person tour. The originally maximum number of 30 people ended up 9. We had a wonderful time. Melissa gave us so much information (especially "if you need a powerful hair dryer-bring one.") we were well prepared for the trip. Their partnership with Havana Tours and our guide Frankie gave us one place to check off our bucket list. Frankie usually handles larger groups who seem to run in and run out of a location pretty fast. This smaller group had lots of questions and we interacted with the various additional guides to the point where we were late to many of the next scheduled locations. We had some formal lectures which I thought would be horrible. They were AMAZING! One speaker gave us a past and present view of Cuba which really tied the whole trip together for us. The country side was beautiful and that was where we started our trip. No beaches on this trip. But, that was not the purpose of the trip. It was to learn about Cuba a place we did not know that much about and are excited to see what happens next. The only thing we were not prepared for was security at the airport leaving. Several people tried to carry on Rum and it was confiscated. My husband was paged for a random intense security exam which included some type of machine looking for implanted explosives! Finally, we were warned to allow 3 hours for the Miami immigration and customs process. It took us over 3.5 hours as several flights arrived at the same time and Customs was in the middle of LUNCH.Thus, not many lines opened. Get Global Entry if you do not have it! We recommend Distant Horizons for these complicated places. We may try them for another trip next year.

My wife and I have done a fair amount of travel (we are both happily retired), but had never done an organized tour, preferring to travel independently so long as we are still young and adventuresome enough to do so. We've been wanting to go to Cuba, however, and for now an organized cultural or educational tour is essentially the only way that Americans are permitted to go there. In early January of this year we took a trip to Cuba that was sponsored by one of our alma maters and was organized and run by Distant Horizons. We had never heard of the agency before. It is not an overstatement to say that every aspect of our trip was perfect. From our first contact with Melissa at Distant Horizons to final farewells exchanged with our guides at the airport, the planning and execution of the trip were flawless. The itinerary was great, the hotels were fine, and Cuba is, of course, wonderful. In preparation for the trip Distant Horizonsprovided pages of useful and information, including reading lists and a lengthy explanation (and, as it turned out, extremely accurate) description of precisely what we should expect at hotels, restaurants, and the places we would visit. The tour itself ran like clockwork. It was intense but everything was always as it should be. Our guides, Jorge and Natalia were extremely intelligent, thoughtful, charming, resourceful people and they brought a special dimension to the trip. We learned a great deal from them in a very short time. All in all a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

The owner of Distant Horizons was the most rude, argumentative, dismissive person I have ever met. I would never book a trip with her again and I advise others not too. She obviously isn't interested in constructive criticism about the tours she oversees. Although she charges high end tour fees, the tour is by no means high end as she books discount charter flights with unknown carriers or/and carriers with poor customer reviews. Meals on the trip I went on often required an out of pocket cost to upgrade to the type of meal I would expect based on what I was charged for the trip. Don't bother discussing any concern with the owner, Janet Moore. She doesn't care. After 25 years in business she must think customer service, especially when a customer has concerns, isn't important.

I categorically urge you NOT to use Distant Horizons, a Long Beach, CA, based tour agency. I just returned from a trip to Iran and found this company wasted 20% of our days by sending us to cities where there was nothing of interest to see. By having us sit on uncomfortable buses with no bathrooms for up to 14 hours per day, all 13 of us complained endlessly to the guide. Distant Horizons also overcharged us egregiously for taxis to and from the Tehran Airport to the hotel. For instance, they wanted to charge me $70. to take me from the airport to the hotel at 3am. I refused that "offer" and paid just $20 to one of 50 taxi drivers waiting for fares outside the terminal. One of the ladies on the trip was charged $130. by Distant Horizons and the driver would not carry her bag from customs to the taxi, a distance of 100 feet. But the worst thing they did to me was the following: I asked them to make a reservation for 4 additional nights at Laleh Hotel in Tehran. They charged me $260. per night which I paid before I left to this agency. The General Manager of the hotel told me that the rate was $132 per night. When I returned from Iran, I contacted Julie Scott and the owner, Janet, and asked for a rebate. Julie said the hotel charged that much because I was a foreigner. But the General Manager knew I was an American. Janet, the owner of Distant Horizons, told me in an email that the agency was entitled to a fair markup. To those who read this review, was a 4 to 7 times markup fair for taxi rides. Was I overcharged by double because I was an American, or was it because I was an American who could e gouged? There are many many travel agencies in this country who are fair-minded and who make every day you are away, a rewarding experience. I urge you to use mother travel company.

It is a great shame and I am so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time in Iran. The follow-up correspondence sent to our office from your fellow travelers clearly expresses their enjoyment of the program (which was provided in detail prior to departure) and their appreciation for both the excellent scholar, (Dr. Keelan Overton) who provided the educational component and the experienced guide - Marjan - who accompanied the trip from beginning to end. We understand that the cost of the private transfers is high and this was, of course, approved by you prior to departure. We offer all of our travelers the option of taking a taxi as opposed to the private transfer. Many of our travelers opt for the private transfer as they are guaranteed to have a car waiting when they arrive along with an English speaking guide but we do agree this is not an inexpensive option. However, I can assure you that we do not mark-up the transfer costs 4x's. That is simply not true. When you book a transfer, you are met, not by a taxi driver, but by a driver as well as an English speaking guide who will be waiting for you whether you arrive on time or four hours late. This offers much comfort to many who are arriving late at night. I am surprised to hear that the guide did not assist the traveler with her bag. This is most unusual and certainly not acceptable. The traveler you refer to has not shared their experience with us directly but rest assured this is not a reflection of the type of service our partners provide and I have followed up to find out what happened in this instance. We understand that you saw a lower rate that the hotel posted in their lobby. It is unfortunate that on occasions in order to have confirmed group space during high seasons we are not able to match the discounted rates that hotels sometimes offer directly to the public especially if they have unsold capacity. Unfortunately, in an age of fluid social media and internet marketing, airfares and hotel rates do vary enormously these days depending on when you book them and how you book them. Many of us in the industry struggle to cope with the problems that direct marketing causes but I believe ultimately working with a reputable, established travel company provides the best travel experience especially in countries that do not have strong tourist infra-structures. Again, I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your time in Iran - a country of great beauty and history with a gracious population who are so proud to see Americans explore their magnificent land. If there is any part of this response, you would like to discuss in more detail with me, please feel free to call me at any time. Janet Moore Owner, Distant Horizons

Distant Horizons has planned the last two of my four trips to Iran and I have been very, very pleased with the results. When you're traveling so far from what is familiar, you need to be able to depend completely on the arrangements that have been made for you and Distant Horizons has proven to have the expertise and thoroughness necessary to arrange even the most complex schedules. Bravo, Julie!

We just returned home from a person to person cultural exchange tour to Cuba that was arranged by Distant Horizons. My experience working with Melissa to set up the trip was outstanding. She was responsive and helpful as we were coming up with the itinerary and honored our requests for the types of things we wanted our family to see and do while we were there. We were there for five days and our itinerary was varied and interesting. Our local guide, Natalie, was fun, incredibly knowledgeable and expertly managed our time in Cuba to ensure we got the most out of our trip. We stayed in a Casa Particular and it was beautiful, comfortable and very clean. Our hosts there were very accommodating and took excellent care of us. We wouldn't hesitate to work with Distant Horizons for future travel.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
