ITALY EXPEDITION
Explore the living art gallery.
Few countries in Europe can match the treasures of Italy. Her visitors have a seemingly unending panorama of breathtakingly beautiful, historically interesting and culturally significant sites to enjoy. Italy’s historic and cultural heritage is so rich and vast that literally every town of any size has its own treasures to display. Jewish heritage and history for centuries have made their mark on this enchanting country. Join Kosher X as we explore Italy and immerse ourselves in centuries of Italian Jewish heritage. In each city and site we visit we explore its significance on the region and on its Jewish history.
Day 1-3 Rome: Our tour begins in Rome “The Eternal City”, the heart of Western civilization. For more than two thousand years Jews have lived in Rome making it the oldest Jewish community in Europe. Traces of Jewish heritage are embedded throughout the city ranging from the ruins of Roman era synagogues, to ancient catacombs, to the grandiose turn of the century Great Synagogue on the banks of the Tiber. In visiting Jewish Rome, we will experience highlights of the ancient, medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and modern elements that make up the unique tapestry of the Eternal City. Explore the former Jewish ghetto, Jewish Museum, Great Temple, Trastevere district, Jewish Catacombs, Roman Forum and Palantine Hill to see the Arch of Titus, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Latern collection of Jewish Antiques, and Ostia Antica, and the ancient part of Rome that includes the oldest synagogue remains in Italy. Experience Shabbat with the Jewish community of Rome.
Day 4-6 Tuscany: Continue on into the Tuscany region. In Siena, considered the most beautiful city in Italy, visit the Jewish ghetto, synagogue, cemetery, and Palazzo Publico, one of the grandest medieval civic buildings in Italy. Continue onto Pisa was the very first city in Tuscany in which a Jewish community settled around 15A.D. Visit the old cemetery next to the leaning tower and the synagogue in the old center of Pisa.
Florence, under the Medicis, was a safe haven for Jewish refugees fleeing from Spain and the other Papal States. Explore the Jewish Quarter, Jewish Museum, synagogue (built in 1882, designed by the Jewish architect Marco Treves), Academy of Arts, Museum Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace (once residence of the powerful Medici family), Vecchio Palace, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Boboli Gardens.
Day 7-9 Venice: The final days of the tour will be spent in Venice, the fabled canal city, which - among its many other splendors - contains what many believe is the best preserved and most extensive old Jewish quarter in Europe. Explore the ghetto and the old Jewish cemetery on Lido Island, "The Serenissima" St. Mark's Square, Academia Bridge, Piazza San Marco, Doges Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs to name just a few. Tour the Venice ghetto, including its five famous Renaissance and Baroque synagogues and Venice's Jewish Museum.

SICILY & ITALY
On our Jewish heritage tours to Italy and Sicily, you will experience wonderful kosher cuisine and unearth the hidden historical depths of these fascinating locations.
Italy is home to some of the most beautiful and culturally-rich cities in the world. In Rome, you will experience the wonderful sunshine and see the breathtaking Colosseum. Famous for its wealth of art, history, striking landscapes and outstanding food and wines, Tuscany really has the best of everything. In Venice you will find the world-famous canals and, on a more sombre note, one of the first “ghettos” of Europe where many Jews were forced to move.
Sicily has loads of exciting history waiting to be unearthed, from the Jewish quarter and ancient palaces to the magnificent Greek ruins in Agrigento. It is also where you will find Mount Etna, where you can experience incredible views from Europe’s highest volcano.
ITALIAN CUISINE
When you join us on our kosher tours of Italy and Sicily, you will try deliciously authentic food and wine. Tuscany is famous for much of the wonderful Italian food and wine we enjoy across the world. This is also where you will find fresh olive oil, pressed from the beautiful olive groves. Other Italian specialities include fresh pizza and pasta dishes, as well as a range of delicious cheeses.
Sicilian food is a combination of cultural influences from those who have lived on the island of Sicily over the last two millennia. Although its cuisine has a lot in common with Italian cuisine, Sicilian food also has Greek, Spanish, French and Arab influences. Specialities include arancina, which are also known as ‘risotto’ balls, and caponata, which is a dish made from aubergine, pine nuts, raisins and olives.
FROM A JEWISH PERSPECTIVE
There is a strong link between Italy and Jewish history and it goes back a long way. Our tours explore the history of Jewish people in Italy and Sicily.
The Jewish religion (and other religions) came under attack in Italy in 380 CE when Christianity was recognised as the official religion of the Roman Empire. In Sicily, Jews were also persecuted when Sicily and Malta came under Aragonese rule. They were expelled in 1493 as an attempt to maintain Catholic orthodoxy.
By the second half of the 16th century, the church instituted the Papal Bull. This meant that all Jews were to be enclosed in ghettos and had their civil rights stripped away. When Napoleon conquered Italy in the 19th century, he abolished the ghettos and reinstated the rights of the Jewish people. Napoleon was seen by many Jews as a type of savior. However, when he was defeated, this was all reversed and the ghettos were reinstated.
In 1848, the Italian states were unified as one Italy and the new government freed the Jews and gave them their civil and political equality, and Jewish people began to be accepted into society once more. However, when the fascist dictator Mussolini came to power in 1922, things changed once again. He declared the Italians to be part of the “pure race” and expelled Jews from public services and schools. In 1940, Mussolini formed an alliance with Hitler and the Jews in Italy were persecuted, many fleeing from the country.
After World War II, Jews were finally reinstated as full-fledged citizens. Many survivors left for the newly formed nation of Israel while others decided to stay and reconstruct their communities. It is estimated that there are 30,000 Jews in Italy today.

Itinerary: 8 day kosher vacation in italy (rome, venice, florence).
Over the last three years, I have been lucky to have been in Italy twice. However, each trip was very different. The first time was a family summer vacation, and we traveled to Rome and Venice. The second time was with friends around Pesach time, and we traveled to Rome and Florence. Both trips were incredible and I was lucky to have had the opportunity to visit these beautiful Italian cities. The itinerary below is a compilation of the two trips, highlighting the amazing and fascinating things that I did across these three cities.
For free audio tours, I cannot recommend Rick Steve’s Audio Europe enough. He has an app that contains detailed free audio tours for cities all over Europe. We liked him so much because he gave enough information to be interesting, without too much detail to bore us. A live tour guide however can be excellent in places where you are interested in a specific aspect of the site.
[ Book Your Tours and Day Trips in Dubai Using Viator ]
Kosher food is abundant in Rome, and available in both Florence and Venice. Be prepared to never settle for boxed pasta from the grocery store again.
This itinerary is jam packed. If you would like to go at a slower pace, consider choosing two out of the three cities to visit in order to spread the activities out. Also, keep in mind that many museums and historical sites require advance tickets if you would like to avoid long waits. Be prepared to do a ton of walking. All of these cities are very walkable and you will see so much more on foot that you would miss in a taxi.

Kosher Cooking In Florence™
Florence kosher cooking ~ 5 days.
Tie on your apron with Chef Gabri for hands-on Kosher cooking classes with authentic Kosher foods, tasting and touring in historic Florence. All cooking classes follow the Kosher guidelines by certified kosher producers. You will also visit the outdoor marketplace where you will see an array of artisan and farm-raised products; including a visit to the area’s only Kosher butcher. As you tour the many vendors, you’ll learn how to select the freshest fruits and vegetables of the season. Highlighting the tour is a visit to the Great Synagogue. History lovers rejoice over this guided tour of the Great Synagogue and to the Jewish Museum. This one-of-a-kind Kosher Cooking Florence program immerses you into Kosher cuisine and the Jewish Quarter of Italy’s most treasured art city.
Note: The kitchen is Kosher and there is self- supervision from Chef Gabi. If you require a formal certification there is an extra fee for the Rabi and Kosher certification. Chef Gabri can arrange for official certification for Kosher foods used during the class, and also organize for a Mashiach to be present to oversee the cooking class. Our chef states a certified Kosherut is not requested as a thorough cleaning and the use of stainless steel utensils, pots and pans (with disposable dishes and kosher ingredients and rules) meets the Kosher standard. A Kosherut from the Rabi of Florence is available and the supplement is $300.
Florence Kosher Cooking Classes
Chef Gabri welcomes you to her kitchen for two Kosher Cooking classes (vegetarian option also) during your stay. She is an expert Kosher chef who has been leading cooking classes for over ten years using only Kosher ingredients, products and produce sourced from local Tuscan farmers and Kosher artisans. All of the meat products are from the official Kosher butcher in Florence, the same one who you’ll visit on your market tour. All cheeses are also made under strict Kosher guidelines by certified Florentine cheesemakers.
Under Chef Gabri’s expert guidance, you’ll be slicing and dicing, rolling and kneading, as you prepare full-course Kosher menus of antipasto, pastas with sauce, a main course and dessert. Her Kosher menus include antipasti, such as fave e cicorie , fava bean purée with vegetables, and anchovies with curly endive; pastas cover orecchiette with broccoli rape sauce along with ravioli from Mugello with potato filling and a savory rosemary sauce, and tagliatelle with slow cooked ragù. Main dishes could include fresh tuna with peas, chicken roasted with oranges or sardines in a sweet and sour sauce. Or then again, you might learn how to prepare pizza di scarola , a savory pie with cheese, escarole and olives and a score of vegetarian sides such as Florentine spinach and melanzane scapece . Each cooking classes ends on a sweet note with Kosher specialities such as crostata di zucca e amaretti, Kosher pumpkin pie and torta di mele , apple pie, to name a few.
Following the cooking class, lunch or dinner is served and everyone dines on the foods prepared in class with a toast of Kosher wine included. Additional wines, beverages and after-dinner liqueur are available at a surcharge.
The Great Synagogue
Florence, a Renaissance city known for its art, museums, history, cuisine and gelato, is also home to one of Italy’s most important Jewish landmarks, the Great Synagogue. Its emerald colored dome overlooking the red roofs of Florence with the Tempio Maggiore, is a symbol of religious perseverance. Step inside and discover inlaid marble floors, stained glass windows and beautiful mosaics. Religious services are held in the early morning for Shabbos and again in the evening before Shabbat. The Synagogue is open to the public during the day.
Your English-speaking guide will lead you through the Temple and the Jewish Museum. During the tour, you will see precious religious relics that tell the story of Florentine-Jewish history. Your tour includes a visit to the Gates of Paradise where ten inlaid panels display stories from the Tanakh . You will also visit Via dei Guidei , a street that was dedicated to the Jewish population and the first street where Jewish families settled in Florence.
A Note on Florence
Food, art and romance overflow in Florence, where ancient cobblestone streets lined with cafés and trattorie , along with restaurants spill out onto piazzas. The main piazza in Florence, Piazza della Repubblica , was once home to Florence’s Jewish Ghetto. The ancient ghetto was destroyed in 1848 following Italian Unity, but today visitors still stand in awe at the historical city square. Benches and cafés line piazzas , inviting visitors to take a seat, enjoy a scoop of gelato, and watch the world go round.
Beyond the main square, Florence stretches into a low-lying city filled with art and stunning architecture. It’s an art lover’s dream and home to the Uffizi and Accademia Museums. Visit Michelangelo’s Davide at the Accademia, then stroll to the Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the most famous museums in the world featuring Renaissance art. Imagine that the majority of the collections was donated to the museum by the Medici, including some of the greatest Italian masters like Botticelli, Giotto, Cimabue, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raffaello, dating back to the 12th and 17th centuries.

Jewish Italy
The presence of Jews on the Italian peninsula can be traced back as far as 200 BCE during the late Roman Republican period. Italian Jewry is especially diverse, comprising a mix of Italian, Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Persian and Libyan Jews.
Ashkenazi Jews have lived in northern Italy since at least the late Middle Ages. In Venice, they formed the oldest Jewish community, predating both the Sephardic and the Italian congregations. Following the invention of printing, Venice became a major publishing center for Hebrew and Yiddish books for Jews across Europe.
The Spanish Synagogue of Venice was originally regarded as the “mother synagogue” of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community world-wide. It was among the earliest to be built, and the first prayer book was published there. Later communities, such as Amsterdam, followed its lead on questions of ritual. With the decline in the importance of Venice in the 18th century, the leading role passed to the Jewish community of Leghorn (Livorno), which acted as a link between the Spanish and the Portuguese.
Italian Jews began to be discriminated against in the 16th century. In 1516, the Jews of Venice were forced to live in an enclosed area known as the “ghetto” which was locked at night. In 1555, Pope Paul IV, who had overseen the burning of the Talmud two years before, issued a decree similarly requiring the Jews of the Papal States, including Rome, to live in isolation from their Christian neighbors in ghettos. Pope Paul IV also decreed that Jews had to wear signs to distinguish them, which meant yellow hats for men and veils or shawls for women. Such Jewish ghettos existed for over three centuries thereafter until Pope Pius IV decided to ban Jews from all his dominions and expel them from all the Papal states except Rome and the port city of Ancona.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, many Italian Jews maintained a trading and residential presence in both Italy and the territories of the Ottoman Empire, and even those Italian Jews who settled permanently in the Ottoman Empire kept their Tuscan or Italian nationality. In the late 19th century, with the establishment of the new unified Italian state, Italy’s Jews obtained full equality. Today over 30,000 Jews live in Italy forming thriving community, which are concentrated in the major cities.

The city is a dense network of arcaded streets opening into large communal piazza, and many bridges crossing the various branches of the Bacchiglione, which once surrounded the ancient walls like a moat. The Jewish community of Padova belongs to one of the oldest in Italy with the Sinagoga Tedesca (now the Museum of Jewish Padova) dedicated in 1525 in the heart of the Jewish quarter, and the 16 th century Italian Rite Synagogue, which is still used by the small 170 members of the Jewish community, and a Jewish cemetery dating from the 16th century.

Day 4: Thursday: Chioggia (choice day)
Chioggia: This morning, you’ll admire the greatest sites of charming and coastal Chioggia; sometimes called “Little Venice” at the southern end of the lagoon. This picturesque fishing village is a popular place for artists where the seaside air and sweeping views are simply spectacular. From here you will have a number of morning & afternoon tour options to choose from:
Morning choice:
Option 1: Chioggia market visit:
Chioggia is the quintessential Venetian Lagoon fishing village. Founded in the fifth century, it was known as the pantry of Venice because of its many small truck farms, which supplied Venetian households with produce until just a few decades ago. It is still a thriving fishing port; its wholesale fish market is one of the largest in Italy. On Thursdays, Chioggia also hosts Corso del Popolo—a dynamic outdoor market along its main thoroughfare where stands sell everything from clothes, shoes, purses, gadgets and “every-day” domestic items. Locals usually do their shopping here as prices are more affordable than retail shopping. We join our resident foodie Naomi as we join the locals for a morning excursion through these beautiful local markets.
Option 2: Let’s Go: Biking Chioggia:
Set off on a light bicycle ride along the beaches of Chioggia, an island often described as a second Venice in miniature. Head to Lusenzo Lagoon, break to see the fishing boats, and then continue to Isola dell’Unione.
Afternoon Choice
Option 1: Bragozzo ride of the Po Delta & Tenuta Ca’ Zen
Board a genuine Adriatic wooden sailing boat, a bragozzo, to take in the island of Chioggia from the clear blue waters of the lagoon. Experience a ride through the canals for a guided exploration of the Islands and wildlife of the Po Delta. After your sailing, return to shore for a visit to Tenuta Ca’ Zen, a beautiful Venetian villa with a fascinating story. Here, you can explore the expansive grounds, antique stable, and more.
Option 2: Castello del Catajo
Set off for the Euganean hills to discover one of Europe’s most majestic castles the Castello del Catajo. Here, enjoy a guided tour of a palace so beautiful that it became a resort for the Habsburg Dynasty before being returned to Italy following the first world war. After marveling at its frescoed walls, continue for a guided walk around its beautiful gardens or take some free time for yourself to explore as you please before returning to the ship.
Featured Excursions:
- Morning choice tour
- Afternoon choice tour
- Lecture program
Day 5: Friday: Murano & Burano
Your morning begins with an excursion to the famous Island of Murano for a glass blowing demonstration. Murano’s glassblowers are renowned for being amongst the best in the world—and how could they not be, with a tradition of craftsmanship dating back eight centuries? Watch a glass-master shape beautiful works of art in their Murano workshop. Before you leave, take some time to roam around the factory’s gallery to view works in a wide variety of styles—from tableware to sculptural, traditional to modern. You can even purchase some for yourself to bring a piece of Murano to your home. Explore more of the Island on your own before returning to the ship for lunch.
This afternoon we sail to the magical Island of Burano where we will dock for Shabbat. Hot pink, chartreuse, orange, lemon yellow—Burano’s brightly painted fishermen’s cottages are an artist’s dream. Burano is known for its lace-making tradition, handed down from mother to daughter since the first workshop was set up at the end of the 16th century. After lunch we stroll into town to appreciate this charming island for an afternoon of exploring and what we consider to be the best shopping in all the lagoon. While you’re here, you’ll visit a historic lace-making atelier to see some of their delicate work and shop for some of the world’s most stunning linen and lace.
Friday evening prepare for a magical Shabbat on-board as Venice glitters in the background.
- Morning tour Murano
- Afternoon tour Burano
Day 6: Shabbat Burano
Shabbat on-board with new and old friends.
Afternoon optional guided historical walking tour of Burano.
After a magical Havdalah we depart and set sail to Venice.
Day 7: Sunday: Venice
We return to Venice this morning to experience a bit more of this magical city for our final day of the tour.
Venice Walk with Gondola Artisans Visit: Get an early morning start to see a side of Venice most of the tourists miss—The Dorsoduro. One of Venice’s six main sestieri, or districts, The Dorsoduro is quieter than some of the more popular districts and thus has an authentic, easygoing atmosphere. Enjoy a walking tour around this picturesque side of town before moving on to visit a gondola artisan. See the craftwork that goes into Venice’s iconic sailing vessels and meet some local masters at work.
Afternoon Choice tour:
Option 1: Do as the locals do – Venice walking tour:
Back when Venice was at the height of its power, only the Rialto Bridge spanned the Grand Canal—and the city’s famous Rialto markets for fish and produce have sprawled at its feet as long as the bridge has arched over the water. Here you’ll find violet artichokes from the nearby island of Sant’Erasmo, honey from the salt marshes, white asparagus from Giare—and Venetians shopping for their dinners in the historic heart of the city. Join them as you explore the colorful, noisy, and fun arcades with your guide (the ship’s chef and our resident foodie will accompany us on this expedition), who knows Venice’s culinary arts intimately. Freshly caught local fish is sold to knowledgeable customers under the Gothic arches of the covered fish market, which was probably originally built in the 11th century. At the end of the tour, you should have plenty of time for some last minute shopping or even a gondola ride.
Option 2: Ca’ Macana Mask Atelier
An integral feature of the Carnival of Venice, masks are known for their intricate beauty and wide variety of styles. See for yourself how these masks are created at one of the top handmade mask ateliers in town.
- Morning tour
- Farewell program & dinner
Day 8: Monday: Disembark

Experience a ride through the canals for a guided exploration of the Islands and wildlife of the Po Delta. After your sailing, return to shore for a visit to Tenuta Ca’ Zen, a beautiful Venetian villa with a fascinating story. Here, you can explore the expansive grounds, antique stable, and more. Option 2: Castello del Catajo Set off for the Euganean hills to discover one of Europe’s most majestic castles the Castello del Catajo.
Day 5: Friday: Murano & Burano Your morning begins with an excursion to the famous Island of Murano for a glass blowing demonstration. Featured Excursions:
- Morning tour Murano
- Afternoon tour Burano
- Shabbat
Day 6: Shabbat Burano Shabbat on-board with new and old friends. Afternoon optional guided historical walking tour of Burano. After a magical Havdalah we depart and set sail to Venice.
Day 7: Sunday: Venice We return to Venice this morning to experience a bit more of this magical city for our final day of the tour. Afternoon Choice tour: Option 1: Do as the locals do – Venice walking tour: Back when Venice was at the height of its power, only the Rialto Bridge spanned the Grand Canal—and the city’s famous Rialto markets for fish and produce have sprawled at its feet as long as the bridge has arched over the water. Option 2: Ca’ Macana Mask Atelier An integral feature of the Carnival of Venice, masks are known for their intricate beauty and wide variety of styles. See for yourself how these masks are created at one of the top handmade mask ateliers in town. Featured Excursions:
- Morning tour
- Farewell program & dinner
Day 8: Monday: Disembark Morning departure and transfer to Venice Marco Polo International Airport for your flight home. *Please note itinerary, mooring, and casting off times are subject to change. It may be necessary to make changes due to climatic conditions, alterations to cruise schedules, or other operational factors.
