East Coast baseball

Looking for a professional sports experience in some of the country’s most iconic stadiums? These East Coast baseball venues hit it out of the park

Watching Major League Baseball players in action could be a highlight of your next tour of the East Coast, but even if you don’t include game tickets, you can still give your travelers the big-league experience. Try arranging a ballpark tour, visit to the team store or meal at a stadium restaurant that’s open year-round. On hour-long tours, east coast baseball fans and non-fans alike enjoy going behind the scenes with peeks into the dugouts, clubhouses, press boxes and luxury suites.

1. Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Oriole Park

Debuting in 1992, this architectural gem of green steel and red brick inspired a generation of ballparks built with a retro look. The outfield area artfully incorporates the historic B&O warehouse, the longest building on the East Coast. Food options include Boog’s BBQ, where former Orioles All-Star first baseman Boog Powell may be seen serving up his barbecue beef, pork and turkey. Experience some local flavors at Harris Creek Oyster and Lobster Hut, where you can dine on jumbo lump crab cakes or fresh lobster rolls served with Old Bay seasoning. The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is two blocks away, and the shops and tourist attractions of the Inner Harbor are a 12-minute walk. Private ballpark tours can be scheduled throughout the year. ( baltimore.orioles.mlb.com )

2. Fenway Park

Fenway Park east coast baseball

Just as much a Boston landmark as Faneuil Hall and Paul Revere’s house, the oldest operating ballpark in Major League Baseball looks much as it did opening day in 1912. Sacred ground to Boston Red Sox fans, the classic park is best known for its 37-foot-high left field wall, the Green Monster. Sit atop the fabled wall, view the manual scoreboard, and hears tales of Red Sox greats like Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski on daily tours, offered year-round. Besides the usual ballpark fare, fans can get a lobster roll or New England clam chowder. Live music, souvenir tables and food carts create a carnival-like atmosphere on Yawkey Way, a public street that’s closed to traffic on game days. Fenway Park offers daily tours year-round; online tickets are available for purchase up to 30 days prior to each date. ( boston.redsox.mlb.com )

3. Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium offers a plethora of dining options, including the 99 Burger (two 4 oz. American Wagyu beef patties, New School American Cheese, caramelized onions, secret sauce), but get it early as they only sell 99 per game. Mighty Quinn’s BBQ is on site featuring fan-favorite items from their NYC-based restaurants. Tours for groups of 15-35 can be scheduled year-round, with lunch or dinner at the stadium’s Hard Rock Café part of the package. ( newyork.yankees.mlb.com )

4. Citizens Bank Park

Citizens Bank Park east coast baseball

This amenity-laden park, with the largest video scoreboard in the National League and the city skyline as a backdrop, ranks as among the best in America. Opened in 2004, Citizens Bank Park gets high marks for its food and often places first in vegetarian ballpark fare. Popular options include Shake Shack “roadside” burgers, Uncle Charlie’s Steaks, named after 2008 world champion Charlie Manuel, and Harry the K’S, an outfield sit-down restaurant named for late Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas. For true Philadelphia flavors, try a cheesesteak or hoagie. Ashburn Alley, named for Phillies legend Richie Ashburn, is a festive outfield entertainment area that includes the Phillies All-Star Walk, Memory Lane and Phillies Wall of Fame. The 35-by-50-foot Liberty Bell in right-center field rings after every Phillies home run. Tours are available Monday to Friday during the regular season and select Tuesdays and Thursdays in the off season. ( philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com )

5. Citi Field

Citi Field

Dark blue exposed steel and dark green seats accent state-of-the-art Citi Field, built in 2009 to replace 45-year-old Shea Stadium as home to the New York Mets. The classic design features a façade of red brick, granite and cast stone that mirrors Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, with the front entrance featuring a rotunda named after Brooklyn Dodgers legend Jackie Robinson. Citi Field, located in Queens, is nationally known as one of the best ballparks in the country for food. Celebrity chef Danny Meyer has played a big part in upping the quality, serving barbecue, burgers and tacos at Blue Smoke and El Verano Taco. When a Mets player hits a home run, a giant apple with a Mets logo lights up and rises from center field. Group tours include the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum. ( newyork.mets.mlb.com )

6. PNC Park

PNC Park east coast baseball

With sweeping views of the Allegheny riverfront and downtown skyline, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ classic-style PNC Park opened in 2001 as one of the most beautiful and smallest parks in the majors. On game days, Roberto Clemente Bridge is closed to vehicular traffic and fans are met with a dynamic retail and sports pavilion beyond right field. PNC food choices include Primanti Bros. sandwiches and Manny’s BBQ, a barbecue spot run by former player Manny Sanguillen. Or grab a ballpark hot dog at Deli Dogs & Nachoritas, along with their upscale nachos featuring fresh toppings. Groups of 25 or more can book a ballpark tour, with or without lunch, for weekdays and select Saturdays from early April to early October. ( pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com )

Breaking News

Oakland athletics | california gas prices are spiking again, what’s going on, oakland athletics, oakland athletics | oakland a’s on a roll heading into challenging east coast trip, the a’s are 7-4 in their last 11 games as pitching, defense have improved after 1-8 start to the season.

It’s barely a month into the season, but the A’s are one of the biggest surprises – and mysteries – in the majors.

While the dark cloud of their impending move to Sacramento next season and then Las Vegas as soon as 2028 looms over the franchise, the A’s have provided some light on the field with a somewhat surprising 8-11 start.

Now comes a challenging 10-game East Coast trip that begins Friday in Cleveland that could go a long way in providing a clearer picture of what the rest of the A’s final season in Oakland might look like.

Even with some encouraging signs, the A’s have their work cut out for them. Their run differential of minus-22 is the fifth-worst in the majors, and they are projected to finish with 90 losses, according to the latest from FanGraphs.

But as of Thursday, they had more wins than preseason playoff contenders the Astros and Twins, and as many as the Giants. Last season, with largely the same roster, the A’s didn’t win their eighth game until May 6. That was their 34th game in a season that saw them finish 50-112.

It seemed like more of the same when the A’s lost their first three games this season and seven of their first eight. But they are 7-4 since, including a road series win against the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers.

This trip will be even more challenging and perhaps more telling.

Cleveland and the New York Yankees, a four-game series on the second stop, are division leaders. Then they cap the trip next weekend with three games in Baltimore, where the Orioles are nipping at the Yankees’ heels in the A.L. East and might be the best team in the American League.

Overall, the A’s play 20 of their next 30 games on the road. The 4-2 trip through Detroit and Texas last week was just their third winning trip since 2021.

“We’re playing great baseball right now,” A’s starter Paul Blackburn told Martin Gallegos of MLB.com after Oakland concluded its most recent homestand with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. “The energy is at an all-time high right now for us. It’s not just coming from guys that are in the game. It’s coming from everyone. It’s definitely a group effort right now, and it shows.”

– The A’s didn’t have a whole lot of leads to protect a year ago, but still managed to tie for the fifth-most blown leads in the majors with 42, including four in the ninth inning.

The bullpen has been much more consistent so far this season, and Mason Miller is emerging as a lock-down closer.

Miller has not allowed a run in his past six appearances after allowing two in the ninth inning of an already out-of-hand 12-3 loss to Cleveland.

Since that season debut, Miller has pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits, three walks with 16 strikeouts. He’s 4-for-4 in save opportunities.

Not only is the 26-year-old right-hander effective, he’s been electric. Miller leads the majors with 64 pitches of at least 100 mph – White Sox reliever Michael Kopech is second with 32. Miller retired the final out of Wednesday’s win by throwing a 102-mph fastball past Brendan Donovan, one of nine pitches of at least 100 mph he threw in the ninth.

– Much of the A’s success in the past two weeks has been the result of better pitching and defense.

After being outscored 49-19 in the first eight games – when they went 1-7 – A’s pitchers have a combined 2.64 ERA over the past 11 games.

The defensive turnaround has been even more impressive. After the A’s committed 13 fielding errors in the first five games, they have made just four in their past 14 games.

– Spring training statistics typically don’t mean much, but in Blackburn’s case, his 13 ⅔ innings scoreless streak to break camp proved to be a good indicator of how locked in the veteran right-hander was to start the regular season.

Blackburn allowed his first runs of the season on Wednesday, his fourth start. He stretched his Oakland franchise-record scoreless streak to 22 ⅓ innings before allowing three runs in the fourth inning against the Cardinals.

Matt Keough had held the consecutive scoreless innings to open a season by an Oakland pitcher with 16 in 1980.

– Clearly, much has changed for the A’s since they opened the season against the Guardians. Oakland lost three straight before Abraham Toro’s walk-off walk salvaged the series finale.

Since then, the Guardians lost ace Shane Bieber to season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery, but have barely missed a beat.

Offensively, the Guardians have been receiving a huge spark from Fremont’s Steven Kwan, who is emerging as one of the top leadoff hitters in the game. He’s opened the season with a .376 on-base percentage and has reached base (and has a hit) in 15 of his first 18 games. He’s only walked three times, but was too busy racking up 29 base hits, second to only the Astros’ Jose Altuve and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani after Thursday night.

–  With fans frustrated and devastated about losing their team, it’s no surprise attendance at the Coliseum has been abysmal.

The A’s have had an announced attendance of more than 10,000 once – Opening Day – and are averaging 6,244 fans through their first 13 home games. They played before a season-low crowd of 3,296 in a loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

The A’s played before an average crowd of more than 26,000 on their opening trip. They’ll face even bigger crowds on this one – the Guardians and Orioles are averaging more than 22K per home game and the Yankees are averaging nearly 40K per home game, second in the majors to just the Dodgers.

– Barring weather cancellations or injuries, the A’s likely will face the Orioles’ top two pitchers – Saint Mary’s College product Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez as well as former A’s left-hander Cole Irvin.

MLB Picks Today, Best Bets, Odds, Predictions for April 19, 2024

T ook a day off yesterday with only four games on the slate. We lost on the Diamondbacks after they went 1-11 with runners in scoring position. Long season, that’s baseball.

Today, I have two picks. I bet the Brewers last night, but my gut tells me this morning that I walked into a massive trap. I cashed out but lost 0.15 units doing that. I recorded that in our record even though it was never sent out.

Today’s card features two picks. One is a first-five wager, and the other is a strikeout prop.

These picks are available on BetMGM. Code “JustBaseball” for a first bet offer up to $1500.

2024 Record: 22-27 (-7.29 U)

New york mets vs. los angeles dodgers @ 10:10 pm est, pitching matchup: sean manaea vs. yoshinobu yamamoto.

I’m still well aboard the Yoshinobu Yamamoto train, and when he’s facing off against a familiar arm in Sean Manaea , I have to back the Dodgers. The market is unsure about Yamamoto, but I’m not. I think he’s an elite arm and will lead us to a win.

The Dodgers have not been playing well, but a matchup against Manaea is an excellent spot to break it open. The Dodgers have seen him several times, and it’s gone well for them.

The former San Francisco Giant hates pitching at Dodger Stadium. He’s rocking a 7.50 ERA in 30 innings at Dodger Stadium. Will Smith is hitting .500 over 16 AB against him. Mookie Betts is 10-29 (.345) with seven extra-base hits against him. Freddie Freeman is 5-14 (.357) with a home run against Manaea.

Manaea is off to a solid start this year, but he got destroyed when he faced good competition. He faced the Reds and Tigers, two below-average offenses against lefties. He got killed against the Royals, who rank lower than the Dodgers against lefties.

Yamamoto will be on the other side. I think he dominates today. He hasn’t pitched since April 12, which gave him plenty of rest. He’s thrown two five-inning shutouts, so the only runs he’s allowed are against the Padres.

The Mets have been feasting against lefties, ranking fifth in the league in wRC+. They rank 17th in wRC+ against righties but fall below average. Yamamoto had no problem with the Cubs or Cardinals, who sit in a similar spot against righties.

None of the Mets bats have faced Yamamoto, and they are traveling across the country after their home series. While they have a day off, it’s still more challenging for East Coast teams to travel west. It’s not much of an edge, but it’s worth mentioning.

It’s an excellent time to buy low on Yamamoto and the Dodgers and sell high on a Mets team coming off four straight wins. Manaea has a terrible history in LA, and Yamamoto is still new to the market. There is a two-run gap between these two in the xERA department, and the Dodgers have a home-field advantage with a better offense. Let's take the Dodgers to get an early lead.

The Pick: Dodgers First 5 Innings -0.5 (-130) Risk 1.3 Units

Player props, yariel rodriguez over 4.5 strikeouts (+155) risk 0.5 units.

I watched his first start with the Blue Jays and was very impressed. Yariel Rodriguez is nasty; his slider grades out as a plus pitch, recording a 119 Stuff+. His three pitches garnered a 33% whiff rate or higher in his first start. It’s early, and we don’t have much data, but I couldn’t pass up this price.

He’s still working his way back, but we have this quote. “I feel very strong, very comfortable. I think I can go 80, 85 pitches easy,” when asked about his start today. He only threw 68 pitches in his first start, so we should see 4-5 innings today.

The Padres have a solid offense and don’t strike out much, but they haven’t faced many strikeout artists. They hadn’t faced anyone with an above-average strikeout rate until they struck out six times against Yamamoto. Even Ben Brown racked up five strikeouts against this team. They’ve had the luxury of facing a lot of soft tossers; let’s see how they do against a heavy strikeout pitcher.

Rodriguez posted a 41% strikeout rate in two starts in AAA, then struck out six in 3.2 innings in his first start. The Rockies strike out more, but we have a longer pitch count and a great price. Well worth it.

Friday night's 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres marked the Toronto Blue Jays' first game at Petco Park in 11 years.

The Atlanta Braves hope veteran Charlie Morton can bounce back from a rough start and enable them to extend their winning streak to six games when they host the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

The upstart Kansas City Royals will aim to extend their home winning streak to 10 games on Saturday night when they play the second contest of their three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Cincinnati Reds will look to ride the hot bat and fast legs of Elly De La Cruz when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday evening in the second contest of their three-game series.
