Western Australia to host 2024 World Travel and Tourism Council Global Summit

world travel and tourism council global summit

Western Australia has been announced as the destination for next year’s World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit in the closing stages of this year’s event in Kigali, Rwanda.

WTTC closed its first-ever Global Summit in Africa over the weekend with more than 1,200 in attendance.

The 2024 event will be the 24th Global Summit and will take place in Perth, late 2024, in partnership with Tourism  Western Australia.

The global  tourism  body’s Global  Summit saw speakers such as global economist and renowned business commentator Justin Urquhart-Stewart; administrator of the United States transport security administration, David P. Pekoske; and chief commercial officer of Arsenal Football Club, Juliet Slot.

The most influential travel and t ourism  event in the calendar, WTTC’s Global  Summit , was attended by more than 45 countries.

“The success of this year’s Global  Summit in Kigali is (a) testament to the power of Africa’s travel and t ourism sector,” president and CEO, WTTC, Julia Simpson, said.

“Through Rwanda, the continent has well and truly put itself on the map.”

“We are so excited to be heading ‘Down Under’ next year.

“Western Australia and the beautiful city of Perth have always been popular destinations and we’re sure attendees will enjoy a real taste of quintessential Australian hospitality.”

Western Australia secured the event thanks to a collaborative bid that was presented by the WA Government (through tourism WA and Business events Perth) as well as support from Business events Australia.

Tourism WA managing director Carolyn Turnbull said hosting the 24 th  WTTC Global  Summit  presents a significant opportunity for WA to demonstrate its growth ambition and investment opportunities to WTTC’s members, which includes the CEOs of key travel businesses such as airlines, global hotel operators and investors, and cruise lines.

“The effect of hosting this event goes far beyond the immediate economic impact generated from delegate spend; this event will open avenues for conversation around inbound trade and product investments, new inbound aviation routes and the development of high value  tourism product business opportunities,” Turnbull, said.

“Business delegates attending this event will be encouraged to extend their stay and explore further afield, so they can experience our dreamlike landscapes,  world -class experiences, and expert  tourism  operators firsthand.”

During its Kigali summit, the WTTC launched its Africa report highlighting some of the challenges travel and t ourism  faces in the region and the opportunities to address them.

WTTC also launched its groundbreaking diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging report which tracks DEIB in the travel and t ourism  sector and highlights effective practices and recommendations for the future.

This years event was moderated by Thami Nkadimeng who was recently selected as a 2023 top 100 most influential people of African descent under 40 in support of the United Nations General Assembly resolution 68/237.

Western Australia to host prestigious tourism summit

Saturday, November 4, 2023 10:00 AM by Business Events Perth

The world’s top travel and tourism decision makers will convene in Western Australia next year, with Perth announced as the host destination of the 24th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit.

The prestigious business event was secured after a collaborative bid was presented by the WA Government, through Tourism Western Australia and Business Events Perth, with additional bidding support from Business Events Australia.

The World Travel and Tourism Council is the global authority on the economic and social contribution of travel, tourism and trade and promotes the sustainable and inclusive growth of the sector.

Hosting the summit will position Western Australia as a leader in travel, tourism and trade, with the event previously attracting high-profile attendees such as former US President Barack Obama, French President Emmanuel Macron, previous UN Leader Ban Ki-moon and environmental activist Bear Grylls (OBE).

Tourism WA, Managing Director, Carolyn Turnbull said hosting the 24th WTTC Global Summit presented a significant opportunity for WA to demonstrate its growth, ambition and investment opportunities to WTTC’s members, which includes the CEOs of key travel businesses such as Etihad Airlines, Expedia and InterContinental.

“The effect of hosting this event goes far beyond the immediate economic impact generated from delegate spend; this event will open avenues for conversation around inbound trade and product investments, new inbound aviation routes and the development of high value tourism product business opportunities.

“Business delegates attending this event will be encouraged to extend their stay and explore further afield, so they can experience our dreamlike landscapes, world-class experiences, and expert tourism operators firsthand.”

Business Events Perth Chair, Bradley Woods, said he is delighted that Perth has been selected to host the world’s pre-eminent global tourism summit attracting the industry’s foremost leaders in 2024.

“As identified within the Western Australian Government’s Diversify WA economic development framework, tourism is a key sector within our state’s growing and diverse economy.”

“Attracting this prestigious travel and tourism summit to Perth shines a spotlight on the sector and serves as a catalyst in further establishing WA as Australia's western gateway to the world.

“With our growing direct international air capacity, world-class event spaces and unique tourism offerings, WA is primed to be a global leader in growing our industry’s future; with repeated success in securing major sector focused business events,” said Mr. Woods.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said it was pleasing to support Perth's successful bid to host the 24th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit through the Business Events Bid Fund Program.

"This is a great win for Perth and Australia. Tourism Australia's Business Events Bid Fund continues to secure a strong pipeline of international business events across Australia, including this latest event in the important tourism sector," said Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison.

"Hosting events like the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit demonstrates that Australia continues to attract important international meetings which will deliver significant benefits to the visitor economy."

Tourism ‘intrinsically susceptible’ to climate shocks, political unrest, pandemic threat

The Perhentian Islands in Terengganu, Malaysia.

The President of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday highlighted the urgent need to boost sustainable and resilient tourism practices to protect the environment while continuing to benefit local economies.

Addressing a high-level meeting on tourism as part of the General Assembly’s first ever Sustainability Week , Dennis Francis said it was a vital driver of economic growth and empowerment .

In 2023, the sector contributed three per cent to the global gross domestic product (GDP), amounting to $3.3 trillion, and employed one in every ten people worldwide. For countries in special situations, like small island nations, tourism accounted for nearly 35 per cent of all export earnings and up to 80 per cent of national exports .

“Despite the spectacular benefits reaped across its vast supply chains – tourism is also intrinsically susceptible to a host of disruptive forces – such as climate change, pandemics, acts of terrorism, and domestic political instability,” Mr. Francis said.

Sustainable

He expressed concerns about the sector’s environmental and carbon footprint, saying sustainability must be paramount.

“We need a global tourism sector that is sustainable – one with deep local value chains that expand demand for locally made products and services in ways that also directly and positively benefit local communities,” he urged.

Moreover, he emphasized that the sector should also leverage digital technology to foster innovation and expand opportunities for jobs and economic growth, especially for women, youth, and indigenous and local communities.

“We also need a global tourism sector that is resilient,” said Mr. Francis, stressing the need to minimize its vulnerabilities and bolstering its ability to withstand external shocks.

This includes designing infrastructures that can withstand environmental disasters, fostering innovations that enhance economic and social resilience, and diversifying tourism activities to reduce recovery time after disruptive events.

Symbol of hope

Zurab Pololikashvili, head of the UN World Tourism Organization ( UNWTO ), also spoke at the General Assembly, noting that despite today’s pressing challenges, tourism offered a glimmer of hope.

Reflecting on the sector’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic – its most significant crisis in history – he observed that in 2023, international arrivals rebounded to almost 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels , with full recovery expected by the end of 2024.

This recovery must serve as a catalyst for bold action and transformative change, he said, emphasizing, “tourism can – and must – be a part of this plan for a better future for all.”

Sustainability Week

The high-level event on tourism followed Monday’s deliberations on debt sustainability , where speakers outlined the crippling impact of debt on developing economies, and called for urgent reform of the global financial system.

Upcoming highlights of the week include dedicated discussions on sustainable transport, infrastructure and energy.

Responsible tourism: 8 ways to support local businesses while traveling

Posted: May 17, 2023 | Last updated: January 26, 2024

<p>Yes, we’re suggesting a <a href="https://www.policygenius.com/blog/cant-afford-a-summer-vacation-the-staycation-is-here-to-help-2/">staycation</a>, but instead of spending time doing things around your house, get out and see your city from the perspective of a tourist. Rent a hotel room for a night or book an Airbnb (maybe one with a pool!) and get away from your everyday routine.</p>

What Is Responsible Tourism?

The responsible tourism movement aims to minimize and even reverse the negative effects of travel, from overcrowding and pollution to the erosion of cultural identity. A responsible tourist will make choices based on what’s best for the long-term success of the community they’re visiting.

Conscientious travelers will want to keep the following goals in mind:

  • Minimize negative economic, social, and environmental impacts
  • Generate economic benefit for local people while supporting improved working conditions
  • Honor natural and local heritage
  • Make connections with local people that foster a deeper understanding of the culture
  • Take into account people with disabilities
  • Be culturally sensitive overall

Responsible tourism was first defined by U.K. professor Harold Goodwin as part of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. It differs from sustainable tourism, which focuses more on conserving natural heritage and biodiversity. Both movements offer blueprints not only for tourists, but for business operators, governments, and local residents.

And remember: The negative effects of tourism, while more pronounced in poor countries, are also felt in many American communities.

<p>What travelers spend in local communities ideally benefits both locals and travelers. Most travelers are eager to help out the places they visit. And if tourists play their cards right, they’ll experience fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.</p><p>Before the pandemic, the travel sector employed 1 in 10 people around the globe. As the World Travel & Tourism Council reminds us, “[B]ehind every job in travel and tourism, there is a face, a story, a family and sometimes a whole community’s livelihood.”</p><p>Jobs in tourism offer chances at economic success to all sorts of people, including women and young people. In fact, women are employed in tourism at almost twice the rate of other sectors. And in some areas, wildlife tourism can help protect that wildlife through preservation programs and the creation of conservation jobs.</p>

Benefits of Supporting Local Economies

What travelers spend in local communities ideally benefits both locals and travelers. Most travelers are eager to help out the places they visit. And if tourists play their cards right, they’ll experience fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.

Before the pandemic, the travel sector employed 1 in 10 people around the globe. As the World Travel & Tourism Council reminds us, “[B]ehind every job in travel and tourism, there is a face, a story, a family and sometimes a whole community’s livelihood.”

Jobs in tourism offer chances at economic success to all sorts of people, including women and young people. In fact, women are employed in tourism at almost twice the rate of other sectors. And in some areas, wildlife tourism can help protect that wildlife through preservation programs and the creation of conservation jobs.

<p>Hopper is a travel-booking app that helps you get the best prices for flights and hotels. It predicts if prices will go up or down and boasts a 95% accuracy. You can book your trip right away or watch and wait to jump on a better price.</p><p>You can save money and help offset carbon dioxide emissions when you shop through the Hopper app. It’s Hopper Trees program will donate funds to plant four trees for each flight and two trees for each hotel room sold.</p>

8 Ways to Support Local Economies

So how can you know if the money you spend is benefiting locals? You can start by avoiding chains of all sorts. Read on for more ideas.

1. Book Locally Owned Accommodations

Chain hotels and Airbnbs run by property managers mainly benefit their global headquarters. Plus they can damage the local culture by driving gentrification.

Instead, opt for a locally run or family-owned inn, B&B, or  small hotel . You’ll be contributing directly to the local economy, as you learn more about the place and its idiosyncrasies.

<p>After enduring a long flight and arriving in an unfamiliar place grumpy and hungry, you may be tempted to pop into a familiar coffee or food establishment that you know from home. But buying food from global chain restaurants doesn’t support the local economy — nor does it expand your palate, which is one of the great benefits of travel.</p>

2. Eat in Local Restaurants

After enduring a long flight and arriving in an unfamiliar place grumpy and hungry, you may be tempted to pop into a familiar coffee or food establishment that you know from home. But buying food from global chain restaurants doesn’t support the local economy — nor does it expand your palate, which is one of the great benefits of travel.

<p>This one may be similar to the one above in essence, because in both instances, I feel useful and valued. I also especially like this one because I am not someone who is naturally good with directions. As a matter of fact, I get lost pretty easily. That’s why I especially cherish the moments when I am actually able to be of use to someone.</p>

3. Consider an Off-Season Visit

Travelers tend to overrun popular destinations during peak season. And in a tourism-dependent economy, their absence during low season can cause places to all but shut down. Instead of contributing to the tourist crush, try booking for a less coveted time.

Instead of  summer travel  to a northeastern U.S. beach town, try holding off till the fall, when it’s still balmy but emptying out.

<p>Unlike taxi drivers, drivers employed by ridesharing services like Lyft and Uber, both operating in hundreds of cities across the nation, can work their own schedules and use their own vehicles to pick up riders where and when they choose on their app, which handles billing and weekly payments for them. <a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/thinking-about-becoming-uber-driver-read-first-3532/">Beware of Uber</a>, however, as the company has a history of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-subprime-auto-loans-running-it-off-the-road-2017-8">employee harassment and predatory auto loans</a>.</p><p><b>Related:</b> <a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/last-minute-retirement-saving/">Ways to Fast Track Your Retirement Savings</a></p>

4. Hire Local Cars and Drivers

Who knows the place you’re visiting better than a born-and-bred local? Rather than  renting a car  (likely from a global chain), hire a knowledgeable local driver to help you get around. You’ll learn the lay of the land and enjoy lots of insider tips and anecdotes for good measure. And you’ll put money directly into a local family’s pocket.

<p>If cars and airplanes aren’t going to work for your situation, then you may want to consider traveling by train. For instance, <a href="https://www.amtrak.com/pets">Amtrak allows you to travel with pets </a>under 20 pounds if you keep them in a carrier for just $26 or 800 rewards points.</p>

5. Take Trains Over Planes

Flying is one of the least sustainable parts of travel. In fact, it’s one of the least sustainable human activities, period, contributing to 2.5% of the world’s carbon emissions. Sure, when you globetrot, you need to fly to get somewhere. But why make it worse by then taking a bunch of small, enticingly cheap flights within your host country? Instead, set your sights on trains and buses, which have a much lower impact than even the shortest flights.

<p>Here’s some advice to help increase the odds that you souvenir-shop for items you’ll treasure for years to come:</p><ul><li>Research your destination’s signature products before you leave. If you’re heading to Venice, you might want to bring back a small glass pendant from Murano (the nearby “Glass Island”), where you can watch artisans at work; this has been a local tradition for centuries.</li><li>Set a souvenir budget and decide before you go what you want to bring back as a souvenir. This can help prevent you from overspending and blowing your budget in the moment.</li><li>Think small, and look for products that are locally and ethically sourced.</li><li>Another idea is to pick a theme for your souvenirs (inexpensive bracelets or bumper stickers), or use a <a href="https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/how-do-travel-credit-cards-work/">travel credit card</a> or cash back rewards credit card for your purchases that can reward you for spending.</li></ul>

6. Buy Local Souvenirs

You want to go shopping, and locals have stuff to sell. What could be easier? The challenge comes in avoiding massive commercial shops and purchasing items from local artisans in craft markets and tiny, proprietor-run boutiques.

It’s also important to be aware of illegal souvenirs and avoid them at all costs. These include anything made of protected animals or trees, such as souvenirs made from poached ivory, animal skins and furs, rosewood, seashells, and hummingbirds, for just a few examples.

<p>Apart from a new car seat and mattress, parents should try to buy everything secondhand, according to the threads top comments. Redditors recommended shopping on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and thrift stores.</p><p><b>Related: </b><a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/toys-made-in-america-17226/">25 Toy Brands That Are Still Made in America</a></p>

7. Volunteer With or Donate to Local Causes

Before heading to your destination, do a search for what donated materials might be needed by local charities. Then reserve some space in your luggage (which you can then refill with your locally purchased handicrafts). For some guidance on what to bring where, check out the destinations guide from the nonprofit  Pack for a Purpose  .

<p>Once you’ve experienced responsible travel for yourself, spread the word! Using the popular #responsibletravel hashtag, share pics and details of the local establishments where you stay, eat, and shop — you may inspire others to do the same. This way, you can go on changing the world through others.</p>

8. Share Your Experiences on Social Media

Once you’ve experienced responsible travel for yourself, spread the word! Using the popular #responsibletravel hashtag, share pics and details of the local establishments where you stay, eat, and shop — you may inspire others to do the same. This way, you can go on changing the world through others.

<p>If you have an elaborate itinerary that requires multiple layovers, try booking each leg separately as opposed to jumping on the first option that airlines generate. With this strategy, you might hop on a flight on one airline to a larger airport, and then fly out on a different airline to your final destination. Be sure to allow ample time in between flights in case of delays or other unforeseen circumstances. </p>

Certares to Fuel FTI Tech Overhaul with Takeover, $130 Million Investment

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 1:59 PM EDT

A leading travel and tourism investment firm acquires the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Certares , a travel and tourism investment firm, led a consortium that acquired FTI Group , the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

This deal ends a restructuring begun in September to strengthen FTI’s finances.

The consortium will own all of the share capital, and FTI will get about $130 million (€125 million) to funnel into its digital transformation and growth.

“Certares’ extensive industry experience and the new capital funding position FTI for exceptional growth,” said Karl Markgraf, CEO of the FTI Group.

Certares holds stakes in a range of travel companies like G Adventures, AmaWaterways and American Express Global Business Travel. The company and another private equity firm also own a majority stake in Hertz and it acquired several hotels in the last year. Certares founder and senior managing director Greg O’Hara became the chair of the World Travel & Tourism Council in November.

Munich-based FTI Group has 120 subsidiaries in German speaking markets, the Netherlands, UK, France, and other destinations.

The group had 6 million customers as of 2022, the latest figures available. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding to be a launch partner with Saudi Arabia for increased multi-day tours in the Middle East.

Competitors to FTI include the giant TUI Group, DER Touristik, Kuoni, and Hotelplan.

Correction: This article has been updated to note that Certares owns a majority stake in Hertz with another private equity firm. An earlier version of this article also said that Certares owns a stake in Tripadvisor – its stake is in Liberty Tripadvisor.

The social media app said the new category will support suers in being able to learn more about luxury fashion, find style inspiration and purchase pieces.

All of the brand's involved posted about the launch, with the Luxe Collective - which recently gained investment after appearing on the BBC's Dragon's Den - said it had been "waiting years to do this".

Comments by the prime minister describing an alleged "sick note culture" in the UK have been heavily criticised by senior mental health professionals.

Dr Sarah Hughes, CEO of Mind, said Rishi Sunak's suggestions were "contrary to the reality for people up and down the country".

The PM said he wanted his government to be "more ambitious about helping people back to work and more honest about the risk of over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life".

He has proposed a series of measures, including removing benefits after 12 months for those deemed fit for work but who do not comply with conditions set by their work coach, such as accepting a job offer.

The PM said 850,000 people had been signed off since the COVID pandemic - with half related to depression.

He also claimed the total being spent on benefits for people of working age with a disability or health condition had increased by almost two-thirds since the pandemic to £69bn - more than the entire budget for schools or policing.

"I will never dismiss or downplay the illnesses people have," the prime minister said.

"But just as it would be wrong to dismiss this growing trend, so it would be wrong to merely sit back and accept it because it's too hard, too controversial, or for fear of causing offence."

But Dr Hughes said: "We are deeply disappointed that the prime minister's speech continues a trend in recent rhetoric which conjures up the image of a 'mental health culture' that has 'gone too far'.

"This is harmful, inaccurate and contrary to the reality for people up and down the country.

"The truth is that mental health services are at breaking point following years of under investment with many people getting increasingly unwell while they wait to receive support.

"To imply that it is easy both to be signed-off work and then to access benefits is deeply damaging.

"It is insulting to the 1.9 million people on a waiting list to get mental health support, and to the GPs whose expert judgement is being called into question."

Disability charity Scope said the measures were a "full-on assault on disabled people" and were "dangerous and risk leaving disabled people destitute".

The FTSE 100 has ended a long wait to achieve a new record high.

The index, which comprises the 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange, closed Monday's session on 8,023 points after a jump of 128 points or 1.6%.

That was the highest closing sum since February last year when the 8,000 barrier was breached for the first time in its history.

The previous record stood at 8,012.

The performance today was driven by a strong showing for companies across the board, particularly financial and consumer-linked stocks such as those for retailers.

The index has been gaining ground in recent weeks on growing hopes for a cut in UK interest rates as inflation eases - with strong evidence that the economy has turned a corner after the recession during the second half of last year.

Analysts credited the push for a new high on two main factors; confidence that a major escalation in the Middle East conflict will be avoided and a weakening in the value of the pound against the US dollar.

Sterling is trading at five-month lows against the greenback at just $1.23 and was half a cent down on the day.

This is a consequence of dollar strength as opposed to pound weakness as expectations are growing across the Atlantic that the Federal Reserve's expected interest rate cuts are further down the track than had been predicted.

Higher interest rates tend to be supportive of a currency which, in this case, is the world's reserve currency.

A weaker pound helps FTSE 100 constituent companies which make money in the United States.

That is because it boosts their bottom line when those dollar earnings are booked back in the UK and converted back to pounds.

The typical price of a property coming on the market across Britain increased by £4,207 month-on-month in April, according to Rightmove.

The property website said a jump in new sellers and the sales of bigger family-sized homes are a key factor behind the growth.

It means the average price tag for a home is only £570 short of the record-high reached in May 2023.

The average new seller asking price across Britain is now £372,324.

This month, the average asking price for a "top of the ladder" home is £682,661, up by more than £18,000 from £664,422 in March.

The first four months of 2024 have been an improvement on last year, the website said, with the market witnessing boosts in both buyer and seller activity this spring.

First-time buyers are facing the most expensive conditions for more than 70 years, according to a report by the Building Societies Association.

The report said taking the first step on the property ladder is increasingly dependent on help from relatives and the need to have two incomes that are higher than the average.

Written by housing market analyst Neal Hudson, the report calls on the government to commission an independent review with the aim of providing solutions that increase the number of true non-returner first-time buyers, both now and in the future.

Mr Hudson also says building societies need more flexibility to help them to support more first-time buyers.

Tesla - owned by billionaire Elon Musk - has cut the price of some of its electric car models after reporting a fall in sales.

The revamped Model 3 car fell by 14,000 yuan (£1,500) in China, putting the price tag at just under £26,000 for the car that upgrades the interior and exterior styling of the original 2017 model.

It comes as Tesla grapples with competition from China, the world's largest automobile market, which is rolling out cheaper electric car models.

"Tesla prices must change frequently in order to match production with demand," Musk posted on X this weekend.

There have also been price cuts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a Tesla spokesperson said.

In Germany, the price of the Model 3 rear-wheel-drive is now showing as €40,990 (£35,357), down from €42,990 (£37,000), where the price had been since February.

It follows cuts in the US of the Model Y, Model X, Model S and the full self-driving driver assistant software.

Earlier, this month, the company reported a decline in its global quarterly deliveries for the first time in nearly four years.

Musk also announced that more than 10% of the company's global workforce will be laid off as it braces for its first annual drop in deliveries.

A council that oversees many popular tourist towns on the Kent coast has said it is considering implementing a tourism tax as a way of maximising income from visitors.

A new report by Thanet District Council - which includes the towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate - highlights the negative impact of tourism in the area and puts forward a number of recommendations to help with this.

One of those recommendations is levying what it calls a "modest tourism tax" on those staying overnight.

The report also proposes levying additional council tax on second homes that may be being rented out as short-term holiday lets.

Justifying the recommendations, the report says: "We want a booming visitor economy but we are acutely aware of the additional costs visitors bring, so we need to make every effort to secure income for the council to set against those costs."

Conservative district councillor John Davis welcomed the proposed changes during a meeting of the overview and scrutiny panel on 16 April.

"It's an important initiative," he said.

"I would like to welcome costs on Airbnbs and the like, because in Ramsgate we have 866 homes for short-term let and 21 flats.

"This is absolutely obscene."

Thanet has seen the biggest growth of tourism enterprises over the last five years.

According to 2024 analysis by Kent County Council , 4.4% of these enterprises are accommodation for visitors.

Train drivers who are members of the Aslef union at 16 companies have announced fresh strike dates as part of their long-running dispute over pay.

Drivers at different companies will walk out on various dates between 7 May and 9 May.

They will also refuse to work non-contractual overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

NatWest, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society and HSBC have all announced rate increases today - amid concern interest rates may not fall as much as expected this year.

Swap rates - which dictate how much it costs lenders to lend - have increased in the past week after US inflation came in higher than expected. Economists are divided about what this means for UK interest rates - with some pointing out that the UK economy is struggling far more, and therefore cuts are still imminent.

The London Stock Exchange Group is still pricing in a June cut and two further cuts before the end of the year. Analysts at Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group, Capital Economics and Bloomberg Economics all concur.

However, some economists have suggested we may have to wait until November for a first cut from the 16-year high of 5.25%.

Lenders, it seems, are growing more cautious.

Responding to today's hikes, Elliott Culley, director at Switch Mortgage Finance, told Newspage: "The rate rollercoaster rolls on.

"Just when the market appears to be picking up some momentum, there is a sharp change of direction.

"We are now seeing the spike in swap rates last week filtering through to the public as lenders raise their rates in response.

"The volatility we are experiencing currently really amplifies how important it is to secure a rate as soon as possible, as this could save you hundreds of pounds, especially for existing homeowners."

Simon Bridgland, broker/director at Release Freedom, added: "This morning, I have been calling clients who have been sitting on the fence urging them to proceed as this increase is potentially going to be with us for several months.

"Inaction will weigh heavily on household purses so don't delay, there is a finite amount of hours left to get deals done before the increases take effect, pick up the phone to your broker immediately or you will be paying more money for years to come."

Capital to co-host tourism summit for first time in Australasia

Wellington will co-host the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) Summit next week, with around 300 delegates from over 40 countries attending the event at Tākina Convention & Exhibition Centre.

WTCF is the world’s first international tourism organisation focused on cities.

Founded in 2012 in Beijing, it has grown to nearly 250 members, including 168 city members and 81 associate and institutional members from 86 countries.

At this year’s event in Wellington, delegates, including international city leaders and members from the tourism industry, will hear from speakers on promoting sustainable city tourism, sharing the economic benefits brought about by tourism for their cities, and showcase the latest research and reports on world tourism economy and trends.

The event, the first of its kind in New Zealand, is one of the outcomes from Mayor Tory Whanau’s visit to Asia last year.

“ This event is an opportunity to showcase Aotearoa and regional tourism , and promote Wellington as a great place to do business, study and visit – attracting more investors, students, tourists and workers to our city,” says the Mayor .

“It’s also quite a coup co-hosting this event for the first time in Australasia, and fitting that it’s at Tākina , further demonstrating the value of the venue, and its on-going contribution to the local economy.”

The event will be held from April 21 to 24, with Mayor Whanau, Minister of Finance Nicola Willis, Mayor of Petra Fares Braizat, and Sima Hong, the Vice Mayor of Beijing and the Executive Vice Chairman of WTCF Council, among the distinguished guests attending the opening ceremony and delivering speeches.
