Finding the right yoga mat is like reaching nirvana — once you do you’ll be in a state of bliss. Find one you can also travel with and that’s just icing on the cake. We tapped Mandy Ingber, yoga instructor and author of Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover to give us the scoop on what attributes you should look for in your next mat purchase. Ingber, who has been the yogi to several A-List celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale, suggested we make design, comfort, grip, and portability the standards we swear by, noting to pay special attention to things like a mat’s thickness, which if too clunky, can throw off your balance, and whether or not your mat feels like a Slip 'N Slide (not in a good way) or helps you stick your poses with no problems.

Armed with all of this insider information, we tested 40 different mats during multiple yoga sessions, taking careful notes and paying special attention to attributes like excellent balance of cushion and support, great grip, and portable features that made them easy to transport. Check out our favorite yoga mats for travel below.

Best Overall

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

It has a cushy and supportive feel.

The rubber smell, though slight, was bothersome.

When it comes to thickness, consider the Aeromat Elite Yoga/Pilates Mat to be the “just right” porridge, chair, and bed that Goldilocks commandeered in the classic kid’s fairytale. There’s just enough material to support and cushion your body as you flow from pose to pose, but not so much that it gets in your way or inhibits your ability to make solid contact with the floor. It also boasts a textured finish that ensures a secure grip, especially when things get wet. We were able to work up a good sweat without our hands and feet sliding around during testing. The surface also has built-in mesh to help your mat retain its shape. And when you’re ready to pack up and go: sling one of 12 calming hues (think celeste, dusty rose, sea glass green, and chai) across your shoulder (a harness is included with purchase). It’s super lightweight — essential for any portable exercise equipment — so toting it around will be as easy as child’s pose.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Jade yoga jade voyager mat.

  • Design 3.9 /5
  • Comfort 3 /5

The great grip keeps hands and feet in place no matter the pose.

Sensitive to smells? This mat has a strong rubbery one that lingers.

There’s nothing worse than having to constantly flow in and out of a pose to wipe the water away from your sweaty hands or feet. The Jade Yoga Voyager solves for this in two ways: its opened-cell surface easily soaks up excess moisture while the textured natural rubber enhances grip. Also, weighing in at just over 1.5 pounds, this lightweight pick is the perfect on-the-go partner, whether you’re headed down the street or across the country for a wellness retreat . Plus it folds down to the size of a yoga block , which makes storing it in a shoulder bag or a suitcase that much easier. Even better: every time you make it to the mat, you’ll know you’re doing so with Mother Earth in mind because this eco-friendly mat not only does away with synthetic rubbers (that’s right no PVC or EVA), using the natural kind by extracting the latex sap from rubber trees, but the brand also plants a tree for every mat sold.

Best Portable

Nike training mat 2.0.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

A little longer than an average yoga mat, it can accommodate folks up to six feet tall while still being super easy to carry.

While the extra cushion is great for bony joints, it does make balancing poses extra challenging.

Nothing can put the kibosh on a Zen practice quicker or be more cumbersome than a yoga mat that constantly keeps unfurling while you’re on the way to your next class. Thankfully, the convenient, adjustable strap that comes with the Nike Training Mat 2.0 helps manage this issue, allowing us to wrap it around both ends of the neatly rolled mat and comfortably carry this cushy two-pounder without experiencing any shoulder discomfort. Even better, for yogis who do a myriad of floor workouts (think Pilates, stretching, core work, and more), this high-density foam mat stands in the gap, making it an extremely versatile and well-padded option. In fact, it was so cushioned that we thought it could double up as a sleeping pad for camping , but the downside is that it may be a challenging surface for balance exercises.

Best Lightweight

Lululemon the lightweight 5mm yoga mat.

  • Portability 4.9 /5

This mat offers a solid, firm grip without being sticky.

If you’re a heavy sweater, you may want to steer clear because it tends to get slippery.

Don’t let this thin, featherlike yoga mat — which is light enough to take anywhere you want to flow — fool you: it’s still supportive and cushy enough to handle every pose from camel to headstand. The hundreds of mini rectangular nubs covering the top of the mat’s surface will help guide your hand and foot grip so you can easily maintain your balance in each of these poses and beyond.

We found this mat very easy to roll out and roll up, and it was supremely lightweight to carry. One thing to note is that the closed cell design doesn’t allow for the absorption of sweat, which can make this mat extra slippery. However, the mat was easy to clean post practice — simply wipe it down with a damp cloth to keep dirt, stains, and bacteria at bay.

The Details: 26 x 71 x 19 inches | 3.3 pounds | Foam

Best for Hot Yoga

Jadeyoga travel yoga mat.

This lightweight mat, which comes in two sizes, is easy to carry, so you won’t have trouble toting it to and from yoga class.

For multi-hour practice days, this thin mat may lack sufficient support.

When it comes to hot yoga, you should expect to sweat. While this may be good for helping to cool down your body, major water works also leave you open to slipping and sliding across your mat, which is a definite no-no, no matter what the position. Luckily, the Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat helps keep you grounded, literally, thanks to its open cell construction, which absorbs moisture, combined with its micro ribbed surface that offers a supreme grip. After testing this mat, we loved it for its exceptional grip that was suitable even with our sweaty palms. We also thought it felt lightweight, easy to carry, and we think it would stay rolled up in transit due to its grippy texture. Feel good environmental bonus: for every mat sold, the company plants a tree.

Best for Beginners

Newme fitness instructional yoga mat.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

If you routinely deal with sweaty palms, this moisture-wicking mat will help rein in that excess water.

This mat molds to your body, leaving an imprint that doesn’t instantly go away.

Being a beginner in a room full of established yogis can feel super intimidating, but newbies can practice with more confidence thanks to the NewMe Fitness Yoga Mat. Doubling as an asana crib sheet, this handy yoga mat has 70 printed pictures of poses (think crow, cow face, corpse, among others) with their corresponding names in both English and Sanskrit emblazoned across its expansive surface. So, whether you need a quick refresher mid-class or help decoding what move the teacher is asking you to perform (we’re talking about you Chaturanga Dandasana!), this mat has got your covered. We also thought this affordable mat had a great grip that kept our hands in place and felt just as grippy as mats twice the price. It was very easy to roll up and carry around as well.

The Details: 68 x 24 x 0.2 inches | 2.6 pounds | PVC

Gaiam Premium Reversible Lunar Wave Yoga Mat

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

It features an antimicrobial, waterproof layer that is moisture-wicking and nonslip.

This mat is on the thin side, so if your knees or wrists need extra cushion and support, go with another pick.

The small raised nodes covering this mat’s dual-textured sides gives it a gummy feeling that offers greater traction for hands and feet to keep you steady so you don’t slip. The result: a tremendous grip that verges on almost feeling sticky at times. Don’t let those little nodes fool you, though; they are tiny enough that they won’t disturb those peaceful moments on the mat, not even while you’re letting the day’s work sink in during Savasana. Did we mention we are also moonstruck by the stunningly painted design of moons in its many forms? FYI: if you are a visually stimulated person, a mat with a cool design, like this one, can make your practice more pleasurable, says Ingber. A handy bonus: with this mat you also get access to an online library of yoga content .

The Details: 8 x 24 inches | 6 millimeters | PVC, latex-free

Best Reversible

Manduka yoga mat.

There’s an alignment stripe down the center of one side, which can help better guide beginner’s with hand, foot, and overall body placement.

The mat’s surface is closed-cell, which means it won’t absorb your sweat or any bacteria, so you’ll have to be diligent about wiping it down post flow.

We love that this eco-friendly Manduka mat is not only free from harsh chemical substances but makes you feel like you are getting two mats for the price of one, thanks to the dual-hued sides. Regardless of what mood leads your color choice that day (we are super keen on the lavender/fig combo), you can always count on the mat’s firm, textured surface to add stability through traction. This well-designed mat held up in a variety of classes — flow, power, and hot yoga — but we think yogis interested in a more restorative practice might do better with a more cushioned pick. Bonus points: it’s light and easy to roll and fold, which makes it a great portable option for yoga-based travel .

Best Budget

Amazon basics yoga mat.

Amazon

  • Grip 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

At half an inch inches thick, this cushy mat is a godsend for those with sensitive joints.

The thickness makes it slightly tricky to transport.

Shelling out big bucks for a mat can be super off-putting, especially if you’re a newbie and unsure if you’re ready to commit to getting downward-dog on the regular. Luckily this mat is very kind to your wallet—without you having to sacrifice on things that really count like durability, grip, and comfort. Those who spend lots of time pressing into their hands (think Crow or Wheel), will find the thick cushioned surface is gentler on wrists. We used it often for handstands against the wall and planks and never felt like we were slipping, even when sweaty. The ample cushioning also makes this a great choice for floor-based bodyweight moves (hello crunches!), too.

Other Travel Yoga Mats We Liked

These yoga mats didn’t make our main list, but they still scored well and had a few key standout features that placed them in a league of their own.

YogaAccessories 1/4-inch Deluxe Yoga Mat : At 74 inches long, this foam-based mat is longer than traditional ones, which tend to land around 68 inches, making it more amenable to those over six feet tall. It’s also extra thick, making kneeling poses like camel, low lunge, and cat/cow more manageable, especially for those with extra sensitivity in this area. That said, this 3.6-pound pick can be a little unruly when it comes to transporting it, making it less portable for travelers.

Lululemon The Mat 3mm : This barely-there option — it’s only 0.12 inches thick — is dual-sided, boasting one that’s sticky and nubby to keep you stable and grounded, while the other is smooth and cushioned for workouts that won’t leave you drenched (think a couple of quick stretches versus a full-on power flow). While we love that it comes in six gorgeous shades and has an antimicrobial layer that keeps mold and mildew at bay, we weren’t fans of how moisture marks remained long after we finished our last flow.

Blogilates Beginner Lightweight Yoga Mat: This mat — which is lightweight, easy to roll, and comes with its own carrying case — is the perfect companion for on-the-go flows. At 4mm thick, this thinner silhouette is great for those who who may need extra stability during a super active and balance-heavy practice (think: Power Vinyasa). As you flow from asana to asana across this 68-inch surface, you’ll be treated to a super grippy, textured surface (both top and bottom) that eliminates slippage. One drawback: hair and dirt are commonplace when using this mat.

For this article, we looked over results from two different yoga mat tests, in which we tried a total of 40 yoga mats. In the first round of testing we tried 19 mats from notable brands (think Manduka, Lululemon, and Jade) through three to five yoga classes per week over a four-week testing period. During this time, we assessed each yoga mat for its design, comfort, grip, and portability — all features that yoga instructor Mandy Ingber said can make or break a yoga practice. Testers continued putting these mats through their paces for an additional six months to collect long-term insights.

For our second test, we tried an additional 21 yoga mats during a yoga class, paying special attention to mat thickness, cushioning, support, and how easy they were to clean. After the class was over, we rolled and packed up the yoga mats, walking around the building, and going up and down stairs to take notes on how portable they were, if they stayed rolled up during transit, how lightweight or heavy they felt to carry, and how easy (or difficult) it was to reroll the mats and pack them up.

In the end, the standout mats put the kibosh on sweat (at least most of them), weren’t overly cushy but left our joints feeling happy, and offered a stellar grip when flowing through poses. Most of all, we felt they were portable enough to travel with.

Tips for Buying a Travel Yoga Mat

Don’t forget about weight.

Lugging around a super heavy mat can make any yoga feel less than Zen, especially if it saddles you with a heavy baggage fee at the airport. That’s why it’s wise to reach for more lightweight styles (think under 2.5 pounds) so you can easily transport it to your final destination.

Consider stickiness

As far as yoga mats go, stickiness is equivalent to traction.  So if you’re looking to lower your risk of slipping and sliding all over the place, the stickier, the better (PVC yoga mats have a pretty high stickiness factor). Also handy for staying power: mats with a raised texture.

Plan for extra support

According to Ingber, thinner yoga mats make great travel companions, as they fold easily and usually weigh less. She also notes that barely there mats “will often leave you feeling every bit of the floor,” which is why shoring up your practice space with a towel or shirt to counter any pain points (think wrists or knees) or cushion more weight-bearing asanas is advisable.

First determine what type of mat you have, as some are meant to be folded and others rolled. If the former, follow the creases if they are apparent, or simply fold it small enough to fit into the storage space you are aiming for. The latter? Roll it as tightly and evenly as possible. Ultimately, the key is to make it work for the type of luggage you are using, whether that be a backpack, a duffel bag, a tote bag, or something else.

When not traveling, consider rolling up your mat and placing it in a mat bag. This will help you keep the practice surface clean, crease-free, and for the most part unscathed, especially if you have a furry friend roaming around your home.

From Astura Yoga Mat Detox to TreeActiv Yoga Mat Spray to Moxe Yoga Mat Cleaner , there are no shortages of quality sprays lining shelves that can help eliminate sweat, stenches, and bacteria. You can also go the DIY route, mixing apple cider vinegar in a 1:4 ratio and adding a few drops of tea tree oil. No matter what route you choose, proper cleaning will help extend the life of your mat.

Best Travel Yoga Mats: Our Top 6 Picks

Traveling doesn't mean you have to put your routine in the drawer. So, to make sure you can continue your yoga sessions while traveling, we've found the 6 best travel yoga mats on the market . We've personally tested each mat during our travels (yes, we have loads of mats by now), from early morning stretches on the chilly floors of a London apartment to evening asanas on a warm beach in the Canary Islands.

  • Yogo Ultralight 4.0 Folding Travel Yoga Mat
  • MIKKOA Travel Yoga Mat
  • Gaiam Travel Yoga Mat
  • Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat
  • SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat
  • Yogamatters Eco Travel Yoga Mat
  • Avoalre Foldable Yoga Mat

In our guide, we’ll give you the 411 of each mat, from their texture and thickness to how well they pack away. We’ll tell you what we love about them, as well as point out any challenges we've found with them because let's be honest—no mat is perfect.

1. Yogo Ultralight 4.0 Folding Travel Yoga Mat : Best Overall Travel Yoga Mat

Yogo Ultralight 4.0 Folding Travel Yoga Mat

On my recent backpacking trip through Southeast Asia, the Yogo Ultralight 4.0 Folding Travel Yoga Mat was an absolute lifesaver. Weighing just about the same as a bag of apples and as slim as a notebook at 1.7 mm thick , this mat made it into every travel bag I packed. It is incredibly effortless to carry around , and I would super recommend it, whether you are heading to a beach in Koh Lanta or setting up for some sunrise yoga on a quiet corner in Purto Escondido. And yes, I've been using the Yogo Ultralight 4.0 on different types of grounds, from grassy parks to wooden decks, and it has shown me just how versatile and reliable it can be for a traveling yogi.

What we love about this travel yoga mat

What really sets the Yogo Ultralight apart is its clever folding design. It folds up so neatly that the surface I practiced my poses on never touched the underside that lay on the ground. This was especially handy when I found myself wanting to practice in less-than-spotless locations (and who are we kidding, most of them aren't spotless). I could lay it down anywhere without worrying about getting the top side dirty.

Another thing I really appreciated about this yoga mat is its commitment to sustainability. I love knowing that it's made from FSC-certified natural rubber , which helps protect our rainforests and supports fair labor. Traveling has also opened my eyes to unfair practices towards people from poorer countries, and I don't want to be a part of that. Not to mention, the straps are made out of recycled water bottles , which feels like a small but significant contribution to reducing ocean plastic.

Key Features:

  • Weight: 2.3 lbs / 1 kg
  • Thickness: 0.07" / 1.7 mm
  • Size: 68"L x 24"W / 173 (L) x 60 (W) cm
  • Material: Tree rubber and cotton

Pros and Cons:

2. mikkoa travel yoga mat : best for hot yoga.

MIKKOA Travel Yoga Mat

People always imagine yoga as this serene thing where everyone is calm and centered, and everything around is aesthetically pleasing. Sure, the first few minutes! Then, it gets all sweaty, especially in humid tropical climates where the heat amplifies every session. If you often find yourself in a hot yoga class while traveling , the MIKKOA Travel Yoga Mat is the go-to choice. This mat is tailor-made for intense, sweaty practices. It has a microfiber surface that feels smooth under your hands and feet. But the real magic happens as you heat up— the mat’s grip improves with moisture , ensuring stability no matter how challenging the positions.

Aside from its excellent grip in hot yoga sessions that prevents you from sliding or hurting yourself? Well, it's incredibly travel-friendly! It's lightweight and folds up easily , slipping into your luggage without taking up much space.

  • Weight: 2.2 lbs / 1kg
  • Thickness: 0.05" / 1.3 mm
  • Size: 72"L x 26.7"W / 183 (L) x 67 (W) cm
  • Material: Rubber

3. Gaiam Travel Mat : Best Budget Mat

Gaiam Travel Mat

Do you know the thing about reviewing yoga mats? It means you have a lot of them, which means my friends ask me to test them out all the time! A while ago, I was packing for a month-long stay in Tbilisi and all my yoga mats were with my friends (the irony). So I read some last-minute reviews about the Gaiam Travel Yoga Mat , which I was eyeing for its budget-friendly price tag. I purchased it and guess what? As I participated in daily yoga sessions in Tbilisi, ranging from different types of workouts, from energizing Vinyasa flows to grounding Yin yoga, I realized how good this mat was! Despite its modest price , this mat stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the pricier models . It’s just 2mm thick, effortlessly folding down to a neat 10" x 12" square that fits in almost any bag (or travel yoga bag). So yes, it's truly a minimalist’s dream.

Its featherlight build makes it incredibly easy to carry around, perfect if you prefer to travel light (who doesn't?). Plus, its affordability means you don’t have to compromise on quality, even if you're sticking to a tight budget. My friends are already lining up to test it!

  • Weight: 1.8 lbs / 0.8 kg
  • Thickness: 0.08" / 2.00 mm
  • Material: PVC

4. Manduka eKO Superlite : Best Eco-Friendly Mat

Manduka's eKO Superlite

As someone who travels frequently, I'm aware of my lifestyle's environmental footprint . That's why I try to make a conscious effort to choose products that align with my commitment to sustainability whenever I can. That goes for yoga mats, too. If you're like me, the Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat will get your curiosity tingling. Not just because it's superbly lightweight and foldable but also because it's crafted from sustainably harvested tree rubber.

It's not perfect, it's just 1.5mm thick , which means it sometimes requires the addition of a towel for extra cushioning during intense sessions. But its durability and eco-friendly design are love at first sight. After returning from a trip to Nicaragua, I can say that it held up like a champ through all sorts of daily use in different places, without showing signs of wear and tear!

What we particularly appreciate about this mat is its eco-conscious manufacturing . I can keep up with my yoga sessions without compromising my environmental principles. The mat's lightweight and easy foldability means I can take it with me anywhere—from a quick city break to a remote retreat—without adding bulk or guilt to my travel experience.

  • Weight: 2.2 lbs / 1 kg
  • Thickness: 0.06" / 1.5 mm
  • Size: 71" (L) x 24" (W) / 180 (L) x 60 (W) cm
  • Material: Sustainably harvested tree rubber

5. SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat : Best for Versatility

SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat

If you're a yogi constantly on the move, struggling to find a mat that keeps up with your nomadic lifestyle, then the SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat is probably for you. It was designed with the needs of the traveling yogi in mind , combining the best of both worlds: it’s lightweight and eco-friendly , made from a sustainable blend of natural rubber and suede . This mix ensures you get a soft, non-slip surface perfect for a range of yoga styles, from a meditative flow in your hotel room to a sweat-inducing hot yoga class in a studio.

But a heads-up: the SNAKUGA Mat does score high on environmental friendliness and portability, but it has a thinner construction. While that's great for travel, it may not provide the best cushioning if you need extra support during more challenging poses or when you're practicing on harder surfaces.

The mat's non-slip surface is super , even as sessions intensified, the mat stayed securely in place, allowing me to focus on my poses rather than worrying about slipping. And its compact and foldable nature, complete with a handy carrying bag, made it easy to transport from one destination to the next.

  • Weight: 2.6 lbs / 1.2 kg
  • Size: 72"L x 26"W / 183 (L) x 66 (W) cm
  • Material: Natural rubber and suede

6. Yogamatters Eco Travel Yoga Mat : Best Mat for Barefoot Feel

Yogamatters Eco Travel Yoga Mat

Sometimes, the choice of a yoga mat really depends on where you'll be practicing. Yes, thick mats offer cushioning, but there are moments when you want to feel grounded and connected with the place you're in . This is especially true if you're practicing outdoors (it's not like anybody wants to feel the parquet floor of a yoga studio). So, a few months ago, we were heading to the Canary Islands, and I could already envision my early morning beach yoga sessions in Fuerteventura. I knew I wanted to be comfortable but at the same time, I wanted a mat that would let me feel the golden sand beneath my feet, you know what I mean? And the Yogamatters Eco Travel Yoga Mat turned out to be just perfect at this. Weighing only 700g and just 1mm thick , it was just the right balance.

It's like having just the right barrier against twigs and pebbles, but you still feel every grain of sand. The thin layer shields but it enhances your yoga session . Just perfect.

  • Weight: 1.6 lbs / 0.7 kg
  • Thickness: 0.03" / 1mm
  • Size: 72"L x 24"W / 183 (L) x 61 (W) cm
  • Material: Sustainably harvested natural tree rubber

7. Avoalre Foldable Yoga Mat : Best Storage Bag Included

Avoalre Travel Yoga Mat

I recently saw another digital nomad use the Avoalre Foldable Yoga Mat , went online and after seeing all the rave reviews, I thought, why not add an extra one to my collection? Since then, it’s quickly become one of my favorites because it’s so easy to pack away and carry around . What’s really cool is that this mat folds up into a neat square and comes with a bag that can also be used as a small backpack —very handy! Just a little tip: make sure to unfold it and let it air out for a few days when you first get it. This helps clear out any smells and lets it lay perfectly flat.

How to Pick The Right Yoga Mat For You

Digital nomads practicing yoga at the beach

As we saw from our list, yoga mats are not all the same ! This may not be obvious to beginners, but take it from a true yogi. Picking out the right yoga mat can completely change your yoga sessions and your travel experience . Here are a few things to keep in mind that might help you pick a mat that not only suits your yoga style but also fits into your travel routine:

Digital nomads aren't just visiting one country. We're always on the move. So, traveling light is essential , and this extends to your yoga mat, too. You don't want to carry around a bulky mat through a crowded international airport, trust me, I know. I learned this the hard way when I brought a heavier yoga mat on a backpacking trip through Europe. It felt like I was hauling a second backpack. That experience made me start testing out various mats, opting to find something lighter, which drastically changed how I travel. A lightweight mat is invaluable when you're moving often and have to carry your gear yourself. It needs to be light enough not to be a burden , yet substantial enough to provide comfort and support on whichever surface you're practicing on.

Texture & Grip

You don't want to be having a yoga session, worrying about whether your sweaty hand is going to slip away or not, potentially hurting yourself . That's why the right texture and grip can make or break your yoga practice , especially in unfamiliar settings. I once found myself on a sleek studio floor in Puerto Escondido where my mat just wouldn't stay put because it didn't stick well to the surface. After switching to a mat with a cork texture, my yoga sessions became way more stable, no matter the surface. Cork and jute are excellent because they offer natural slip-slip resistance , which is essential whether you're trying to hold a pose on a dewy morning hillside or a humid tropical beach.

We've rolled out everything from PVC to natural rubber mats throughout our yoga journey . While PVC mats are budget-friendly and offer decent initial stickiness, they haven't always matched up with the performance of natural rubber or other eco-friendly options. The shift to natural rubber made a difference for me, especially in terms of grip and eco-consciousness .

Size does matter when it comes to yoga mats. I remember practicing on a mat that was too short in Bulgaria, and it was just so annoying adjusting my poses to stay on the mat. That isn't the type of yoga session I was going for. Ensuring your mat is at least six inches taller than you can make all the difference, offering ample space for any pose. Remember, the width and length of your mats have to be in line with your body and the different types of yoga you'll be practicing during your travels.

Do you know how surgeons wear colorful scrub caps? That’s their way of showing personal style. For us yogis, it’s our yoga mats that do the talking. You can't deny there's something special about unrolling a mat that resonates with your style, especially when you’re in a new environment. While functionality trumps everything, we've found that choosing a mat with a design or color that speaks to us enriches our session, making it feel more intimate and personal. Yes, these stylish mats might cost a bit more, but setting down a piece of your personality in each new location is priceless.

How to Travel With Your Yoga Mat: My Top Tips

ELENTURE Yoga Mat Bag

Traveling with a yoga mat has turned into a non-negotiable for me, as essential to my trips as a comfortable pair of walking shoes. I use my mat for stretching out in between calls or grounding ourselves when we're in a new city. Here's how I carry them around the world and how we manage to keep our yoga practice going strong, no matter where we are:

Packing Your Yoga Mat

Stuffing your yoga mat into your suitcase is not the way to go. Instead, a reliable yoga mat bag or a carrying strap is essential. I always look for bags with extra pockets —they're perfect for safely tucking away the mat but also other personal belongings like wallets and passports. This setup keeps everything organized and easily accessible , which is crucial when you're moving from place to place.

Air Traveling with a Yoga Mat

In my experience, bringing a yoga mat on flights hasn't been an issue. Most airlines allowed me to bring our mats along as carry-on luggage . I've gotten into the habit of attaching our mats to our backpacks using either compression straps or simply sliding them under the elastic bands that many travel packs come with. It's a simple trick that keeps our hands free and makes moving through busy terminals much easier.

Maintaining Your Mat

I've learned that keeping my yoga mats rolled up too tightly for too long isn't the best idea . So, wherever I land, I make it a priority to find a little nook in my temporary apartment where I can spread out my mat and leave it flat. This helps the mats keep their shape and also creates a ready-to-use space that inviting for regular practice. Once, I turned a small corner of our temporary home into a serene yoga spot with just our mats and a view. Since then it became a daily ritual that grounded me in my routine.

Cleaning Your Mat

Yes, you need to clean your yoga mat , especially after a sandy beach session or a sweat-drenched workout. We stick to a simple cleaning solution — water mixed with a splash of mild soap or a few drops of essential oils . A quick spray and wipe with a soft cloth after each use does the trick. Ensuring the mat is completely dry before rolling it back up is key to preventing any mold or unpleasant odors. This is how we've saved our mats from wear and tear and kept them fresh, no matter the climate or setting.

How Can I Fold a Yoga Mat for Travel?

Packing a yoga mat for travel is like going on autopilot for me. Here's the simple yet effective method I've perfected over the years to make sure my mats are always ready for the next destination:

  • Lay it Flat: I start by spreading the mat flat on a clean surface, with the side we practice facing inward. This step is crucial for protecting the mat's surface from dirt and wear while we travel.
  • Fold or Roll: Depending on the mat's material and how much space we have, I either fold it into a compact square or tightly roll it up. Folding is great for saving space, while rolling can be better for keeping your mat in shape long-term.
  • Place in Luggage: I then carefully place the mat in our suitcase or yoga mat bag. If it’s folded, I lay it flat against the bottom or along the sides to keep it uncreased and ready for use as soon as we land. In a backpack or tote, we find a snug spot where it won’t get bent or twisted.

That was it for this guide! I hope you will find your perfect yoga mat and you will have taken something useful from my tips. Happy travels!

Courtesy of Manduka

Treehugger's top choice for an eco-friendly yoga mat is Manduka's eKO Lite Yoga Mat .

The modern-day postural yoga movement as we know it starting shaping up in the 20th century, but the yoga mat is a fairly recent invention. With the practice of yoga becoming more dynamic, the humble rug, the equipment of choice of traditional yogis, has made way for mats. Yoga mats make it more comfortable to perform all kinds of poses. They offer great grip, cushion your body from injury, are simple to clean, and are easily portable.

The downside is that a majority of the mats are made from PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride , touted to be one of the most environmentally destructive plastics to have entered our water supply, the air we breathe, and our food chain.

Fortunately, PVC mats are making way for more consciously sourced, eco-friendly materials. More sustainable mats are made from materials such as cork, natural rubber, jute, recycled PET bottles, and even recycled wetsuits. Not only trendy, but they’re also environmentally friendly. So, you can slide into a pose blissfully and guilt-free.

Below, you'll find the best sustainable yoga mats, according to our materials research and user testing.

Best Overall

Manduka eko lite yoga mat.

Our top pick of mats is Manduka’s grippy, supportive and durable eKO Lite mat that’s made from natural rubber, which hasn’t been harvested from Amazonian forests. It took four years for yoga teachers to design this wonderfully textured mat that’s 99% latex-free, zero waste, chemical-free, and doesn’t contain any PVC. EKO Lite is a versatile sealed-cell mat that doesn’t absorb moisture.

Whether hot yoga or vinyasa, you flow through transitions easily without slipping. Weighing 5 pounds, it’s 71 inches long and 0.15 inches thick, and comes in gorgeous marbled hues and solid shades.

Moreover, through project:OM, Manduka donates 1% of global sales to empower communities. It also has an expansive mat recycling program, LiveOn. You can send in any threadbare yoga mat for recycling, irrespective of the brand.

"This mat has a solid feel, with plenty of grip and just the right amount of cushion. I've been using it for over a year, and I highly recommend it." ~ Margaret Badore , Treehugger Associate Editorial Director

Best Non-Slip

Jade yoga harmony yoga mat.

The Harmony Mat offers great traction, making tricky poses a little easier. Great for yoga or pilates, these are Jade’s go-to yoga mats. Made from natural rubber, these 0.2 inch thick mats is among the thicker mats that we tested. They are 99% latex-free and are available in two lengths (68 inches and 74 inches), and two widths (24 inches and 28 inches). Our tester found it to be pleasantly firm, offering plenty of grip and support. However, the new mat did have a lightly rubbery smell, so you may want to wash it before using.

Durable, they’re available in more than a dozen fabulous colors, such as Raspberry, Tibetan Orange, Flamingo Pink, Jade Green, and Midnight Blue, adding a pop of joy to your practice. Environmentally committed, the company has partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every Jade mat sold. To date, over one million trees have been planted through this partnership.

Best Extra-Thick

Sugamat recycled wetsuit yoga mat.

Just the right heft without being too weighty, the blackish, charcoal-colored SugaMats are 0.2 inches thick but weigh just under 5 pounds. The thickness offers cushion while being spongy enough to slide into poses without hiccups. The company did extensive research and development to create these high-density mats, which can support advanced poses, such as the side crow or the parshva bakasana.

It takes around one wetsuit to make one yoga mat, and the company offers a 10% discount if you donate one. What we love is that the mats are completely recyclable. Also, once you buy one, you’ll be serviced for life. Their Cradle-to-Grave recycling service means when you can send in your worn-out SugaMat, the company will replace it with a spanking new one at no cost.

Best Mat and Bag

Say hejhej or hello to this lovely duo! We love the German hejhej closed-loop yoga mat made from recycled pre-consumer waste materials and the recycled PET bottle fabric bag combo. With a textured, anti-slip cushioned surface, the mat is nearly 4.5 pounds and is 0.2 inches thick. The bags are available in chalk and grey-aubergine colors, and the mats come in Rather Light and Rather Dark shades.

The bag is waterproof, with a zipper made from recycled fishing nets, while the strap doubles up as a yoga belt. The bag is carefully hand-sewn and the biodegradable hemp logo is gently affixed to the mat. Hejhej has partnered with a workplace for people with disabilities, and the package is shipped carbon neutrally.

For each mat sold, 1€ is donated to the EarthChild Project . Though pricey, hejhej says its mats can last for more than a decade and the bag for even longer. Once worn out, just ship them back free of charge, and the company will recycle them for you while giving you a 15% discount on your next purchase to boot.

Best for Hot Yoga

Yoloha unity cork yoga mat.

The Yoloha Unity Cork yoga mat is perfect for a sweat sesh at your hot yoga class. This rugged mat has an extra thick recycled cork and rubber blended surface, along with cushioned foam support. Our tester noted that it's not too soft and provides good support so you don't feel the hard floor underneath you.

Anti-bacterial, durable, and eco-friendly, it doesn’t absorb moisture and dries quickly. So you can ditch rolling out a towel on your mat before your yoga session. It is a generous 0.25 inch thick, and comes in three different sizes. Our 5-foot, 11-inch tester found the 72 x 26 inch mat a bit too short, so if you're on the taller side, be sure to select a larger size. One downside of cork is that it is heavier than other mats, so keep that in mind if you want to travel with your mat.

We also like that this product ships in fully recyclable paper and cardboard packaging. If this high-performance mat doesn’t conform to your practice, you can refund or exchange it within 60 days.

Best Budget

Gaiam jute yoga mat.

Affordable, lightweight, and non-slip, Gaiam’s jute mat is a blend of renewable natural fibre jute and Polymer Environmental Resin. Though PER is a synthetic material, unlike PVC, it biodegrades gradually in a landfill. A compact 68 x 24 inches, it is somewhat on the petite side.

The mat is 0.2 inches thick, giving you good support and cushioning. It is non-slip, so you can use it in your hot yoga practice. However, if your skin is very sensitive, the texture can be slightly abrasive. Before use, it’s a good idea to air it out for a day or two to release the distracting but harmless odor.

Manduka eKO Round Yoga Mat

A round mat can allow your practice to flow in all directions, offering more support for twisting poses and space for the widest stretches.

While none of the round mats we found on the market are as eco-friendly as the other mats on this list, Manduka's round mat is a solid choice. It's base and core are made from natural rubber, but we don't love that the top has a layer of microfiber, a synthetic material that can contribute to microplastic pollution. However, we still think Manduka is doing a lot to minimize its environmental impact, making this mat the best choice if you want a round option.

There are a few downsides to a circular mat. First, they can be quite large, so they're not the best thing to shop up with to a crowded yoga class. If you're new to a round mat, note that some people can find the experience a bit disorienting at first, so you might consider a mat with a non-circular pattern that can help you feel positioned.

Best Organic

Brentwood home organic non-slip yoga mat.

Brentwood-home

For a different approach to a non-slip mat, Brentwood Home's yoga mat has a thick top layer of textured organic cotton, which offers sweat absorption. The bottom is a layer is made from natural latex, to prevent slipping on slick floors. It's a robust 5 millimeters think, and comes in six colors. If you're not sure this style of mat will work for you, there's a 30-day trial period.

The mat comes with an impressive resume of third-party verifications—the cotton is Global Organic Textile Standard certified, the latex is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and the whole mat is certified Vegan. Plus, Brentwood Homes works with Climate Neutral to offset its contributions to global warming.

Popular with Yoga teachers and A-listers alike, we love Manduka’s mats and our pick of eco-friendly mats is its Manduka eKO Lite Yoga Mat 4mm that is grippy, supportive, and durable. We also like the wallet-friendly Gaiam Performance Jute Yoga Mat .

What to Consider When Shopping for a Sustainable Yoga Mat

When it comes to sustainability, plant-based substances like cork and natural rubber are more eco-friendly materials than plastic PVC or foam. We also like seeing yoga mats that are creatively made from recycled materials, like the SUGA mat that's made from recycled wet suit fabric.

The majority of yoga mats measure 24 x 68 inches, however, there are many longer and wider mats on the market. As a rule of thumb, if you are taller than 5-foot-9 you’ll want to look for a mat that offers 70 inches or more in length.

The majority of the mats we recommend have a thickness of 0.2 inches. A super thick mat may sound appealing for cushioning pressure points, but there are some reasons why you might want a thinner mat. A mat that is both very think and fairly soft may cause some practitioners to feel wobbly or unstable, particularly in one-foot poses like Tree Pose or Warrior III. Thicker mats also tend to be heavier and a little less portable.

Experts recommend that you ideally should clean your mat after each yoga session to get rid of the microbes that build up there, especially after a sweaty class or a slick hot yoga practice. But for most people, the frequency varies depending on a host of factors, such as the kind of yoga you practice, the intensity of your sessions, and what the brand recommends for the specific mat you are using.

Yoga mats usually come with suggestions of how to clean them. Depending on the kind of materials your mat is made of, the simplest and most effective way is a solution of warm soapy water to wash away the grime and microbes such as fungi and bacteria.

An effective DIY solution is to mix equal parts of vinegar and water to which you can add a dash of tea tree oil (too much oil can make your mat slippery). If tea tree oil isn’t a favorite, you can substitute it with any antibacterial essential oil, think eucalyptus, peppermint, or lemongrass. You can also use wipes that are gentle on your skin or special yoga mat cleaning sprays to keep it clean. If it’s a cloth mat, you can even pop it in the washing machine. (Do check the label.)

A helpful tip is to let your mat air dry thoroughly before you stash it for safekeeping, as bacteria can breed in moist environments. It is advised to keep mats, especially natural rubber ones, away from the sun as they can fade under harsh rays and become brittle and crumble.

Yes! You can and you should. Treehugger has covered how you can repurpose your yoga mat after it has reached its raggedy end. Consider making an anti-slip floor runner under rugs, a mouse pad to a bulletin board, and even placemats and coasters. Let your imagination run wild.

The Best Lightweight Travel Yoga Mats for Easy Storage

For some travelers, the thought of exercising on vacation —beyond walking around a new city—seems ridiculous. To others, taking time to stretch , do a few downward dogs, or head to a local class is a necessity after spending hours on a plane. For those who fall in the latter camp, we've got you covered. While your standard mat is likely a bit too heavy to make the cut, these travel yoga mats are designed with portability in mind.

When deciding which ones fit the bill, there were a few factors to consider: for one, is it lightweight? If you're going to be packing it in a suitcase , a weekender bag , or backpack, you don't want it weighing you down. With that said, though, you want there to be some cushion and support, especially given that the more lightweight mats won't have the same thickness as regular mats. We managed to find a few that are still fairly supportive (for added comfort, try placing a yoga towel on top) and also looked at grip and packability—like whether it can only be rolled, or if you can fold it up flat. Below, our top choices for travel yoga mats, plus a few more accessories to help keep you zen on the road.

Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

Weight: 2.2 pounds Thickness: 1.5mm Traveler editors tried out both Manduka's eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat and the Pro Travel Mat and preferred the eKO version—while still fairly thin, the Superlite offered a bit more cushion, despite weighing less (every ounce matters in a checked bag). It doesn't bunch up or move on the floor, and held up well, grip-wise, in a hot yoga class. It also rolls up to be super slim, so we recommend packing it that way; if you're putting it in a tote or backpack, though, fold it flat into a square for less height. As a bonus, it comes in 10 colors, catering to yogis who like a neutral mat as well as ones who prefer a pattern, and is made out of sustainably harvested tree rubber and synthetic polyester.

Hugger Mugger Tapas Ultra

Weight: 2.5 pounds Thickness: 6mm We asked a New York-based yoga instructor for her mat suggestions, and this Hugger Mugger model stood out as being both lightweight and cushiony. It comes in two lengths, depending on your height (68 inches or 74 inches; the longer one adds .2 pounds). It's thicker than the Manduka mat, but just a few ounces heavier, so if you like a bit more support under you, or are staying somewhere with hard floors, this mat is a solid choice. The stickiness will help you stay in place mid-pose, too.

Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat

Weight: 1 pound Thickness: 2mm Another instructor-recommended brand: Gaiam. While their traditional mats offer much more cushioning, this foldable mat is great if you're really tight on space or travel frequently. At just a pound, it's the most lightweight option we found, and folds easily into a 12" by 10" rectangle after use. It has a sticky texture on top for stability, and works just as well at the beach or the park. Reviewers note it is great to use in hotel rooms and is thin enough to slide into the outer compartment of carry-on suitcases.

Like the other mats, it has a sticky top layer to aid with grip; it's also made of eco-friendly materials (natural rubber and cotton). While on the thinner side, it gets points for its packability, and is flight attendant-approved, per reviews.

13 Best Eco Travel Yoga Mats

13 Best Eco Travel Yoga Mats

Going on a trip somewhere doesn’t mean you have to compromise your yoga routine. A travel yoga mat is here as a solution. With a travel yoga mat, it’s easy to do yoga anytime and anywhere you want. You can do it on the beach, in the park, or in your hotel room. As a responsible yogi (and human being), you should always go for eco-friendly and sustainable products. That’s why an eco-friendly yoga mat is the ultimate solution. Doing yoga on an eco travel yoga mat is good for both your health and the planet. Isn’t that the win-win solution we all strive for? On the list below, we’ll show you the best eco-friendly travel yoga mats for responsible yogis like you.

And talking about the perfect location for both traveling and yoga, we definitely should mention Bali, especially Ubud. This is a paradise for all yogis all around the world. Go check out the best hotels in Ubud and start planning your visit today! But if Bali is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other alternatives. Chiang Mai would be a great place for your spiritual growth. Here are the best hotels in Chiang Mai for a memorable experience like never before.

How to Choose the Best Eco Travel Yoga Mat

There are way too many yoga mats on the market. However, not all yoga mats are eco-friendly and made through a sustainable process. If you care about the environment, always choose a sustainable product. That’s why an eco travel yoga mat should always be the number one choice. But before you buy your first eco-friendly yoga mat, here are 4 things to consider so you won’t regret buying it.

As we mentioned before, natural material is what we’re looking for when it comes to an eco travel yoga mat. Pick a product that’s made with sustainable material and process. You should avoid a yoga mat that contains PVC, NBR, or other harmful plasticizers. The best material is eco-friendly TPE material and other natural rubber. It will be even better if you’re able to find a yoga mat that’s made of plant-based material, such as cork yoga mats.

Since you’re traveling, you need an eco travel yoga mat that’s compact enough to pack, but also big enough for various yoga movement. If it’s too big, carrying it will be such a hassle. But when it’s too small, you won’t be as free when performing certain poses. This is why it’s important to look for something in between. Another thing to consider is the thickness and the packability of the mat.

Just because an eco travel yoga mat is bigger doesn’t mean it necessarily weighs more. You need to actually check the weight of the mat, not just the size. Some yoga mats can be smaller in size but weigh more because of their thickness. The material can also make a huge difference in weight.

And last but not least is durability. You want to make sure that you buy a product that will last for years. Nothing’s worse than buying an eco travel yoga mat that won’t last for long term travel. Many eco-friendly yoga mats can be expensive, make sure you make a good investment and buy the one with the highest quality.

How much should you spend on an eco travel yoga mat?

There’s really no standard when it comes to an eco travel yoga mat. However, a good price range is anywhere from 50 USD to 100 USD. Some may be more expensive or less expensive depending on the brand.

How do you travel with an eco travel yoga mat?

Fortunately, most travel yoga mats come with carry-on straps so you don’t have to worry about how to bring it with you when you’re on the go. Most of the mats are also easily foldable.

Is a thicker eco travel yoga mat better?

Thicker doesn’t necessarily mean better. Sure, thicker mats may provide better cushion and it’s suitable for restorative yoga. However, carrying it can be a hassle since it won’t fold into the most compact size.

BEUNIV Yoga Mats Non Slip (CU)

Don’t you love a professional eco travel yoga mat that is available at an entry-level price? We all love a good deal and BEUNIV Yoga Mats Non-Slip is such a steal when it comes to the eco-friendly yoga mat for traveling. How to choose the best foldable yoga mat for travel

Here is what you should consider when choosing the best foldable yoga mat for travel:

Portability

Look for a mat that is specifically designed for travel and offers foldable or compact features. Consider its weight, size, and ease of folding to ensure it can fit conveniently into your travel bag or suitcase.

Many foldable mats are quite thin. Thicker mats provide more support, especially if you have sensitive joints. However, keep in mind that thicker mats may be bulkier to carry. Thinner mats are lighter and more compact but may offer less cushioning.

Opt for a mat made from durable and high-quality materials that can withstand regular use. Common materials include TPE, PVC, or eco-friendly options like natural rubber or cork.

Your mat should have a textured or non-slip surface to ensure a secure grip during your practice. This is particularly important when practicing on various surfaces or in different environments.

Maintenance

Choose a mat that is easy to clean and maintain. The best mats can be wiped clean with a damp cloth or are machine washable. Quick-drying properties are also beneficial for travel.

Consider your height and personal preference when selecting the size of the mat. Make sure it provides enough space for your practice and allows you to move freely without feeling restricted.

Read customer reviews and seek recommendations from fellow yogis or trusted sources to gather insights about the mat’s performance, durability, and overall quality.

Yogis react.

I am so happy that I purchased this mat for travel! It’s lightweight, compact, perfectly sticky, and has a natural feel keeping me connected to the Earth as I practice Yoga in new locations. Thank you Yogo for providing this quality mat to help keep my Yoga practice going with love and ease wherever I am!

Great travel mat! Sticky, grippy mat that is perfect. Truly portable and folds into sling nicely, I bought the large mat and still small enough to put into my luggage.

I like the size and grip of the mat. Perfect for travel.

Amazing compact size! Im excited to use my mat while traveling. Thanks!!

The Ultralight Folding Yoga Mat is fantastic. I wish I had found it sooner. The grip is better than any other mat I have used. It folds up compactly for travel with attached straps/handle. I especially like that it folds back on itself so the downward surface only touches itself, not the top of the mat or inside of my luggage. If you need a light mat for home or travel, do not hesitate - this mat is great!

this is so cute and easily fit in my suitcase. I am hoping to take to Europe in a 19Inch suitcase. It is easy to fold up and clip together. I currently have in my bedroom for any quick yoga at 0300 and travel plan to buy for friend.

As I travel frequently for work I’ve become a minimalist packer. Having the portable and lightweight Yogo mat has been a game changer! In addition of being extremely compact, the Yogo mat sustains a sticky grip both on top and underside of the mat. The mat on the hotel carpet offsets the thin mat and provides a bit of cushioning. Cleaning the mat is a breeze thanks to the hang up straps. I don’t know how I survived this long without the mat! Do not hesitate to purchase, especially if you are a frequent traveller and want a very portable mat.

So excited to have a mat that is easy to travel with and love how the clean side only touches the clean side! Grippy and awesome...

Did lots of research online about travel yoga mats & this one was highlighted as a great one on many of them. I was a bit apprehensive to order as couldn’t seem to order from uk supplier, but I needn’t be worried- fast & efficient deliver from USA (no additional taxes required). Love love love that mat- looks cool, folds up very small & great grip. Everything I wanted & absolutely delighted!

This yoga mat is so easy to travel with! I love that it is made with sustainable materials. It is thin, but it needs to be in order to travel with it. I love that it comes with its own carrying straps. Well made, and you can tell the company really cares. Highly recommend.

This mat is great, I tried it at a retreat center for an entire weekend, it's the perfect size and I got the slightly bigger one. The grip is good, I like that the floor side never has to touch the top side. I quickly got the hang of folding it back up. The attached straps did not get in the way, I thought they might but they didn't. I also got an excellent deal because I bought one with a "damaged box". I have to say the box was barely dinged, but it shows that Yogo cares about offering a quality product. I look forward to taking this mat on some real outdoor adventures next week.

This mat is incredible. It’s small and sticky. And I have super sweaty palms. I’m so grateful to have found Yogo! Thanks for a wonderful product ❤️

The material is amazing the mat is super “grippy” and I love it. I bought it to take on trips with me and I’ve been using it almost every time I practice lol MUST HAVE

It is super lite but so comfortable and not slippery like most of my other mats.

I have tried several different brand yoga mats in past years, and this is the best. My feet stayed firm and grounded through the whole class. I love the glossy sheen on top of the mat. I even like the way it smells. I placed the Yogo mat on top of a thick mat for cushioning and I couldn’t be more pleased. I am excited to try it in sweaty conditions, and it will be great for travel!!

What to use as a yoga mat when travelling? A travel yoga mat is the best thing to use when travelling. With a wide range of both lightweight and foldable mats available, you can keep up with your practice even whilst on the road. Yoga travel mats are compact enough to fit in your luggage, but durable and sturdy to keep you supported during your yoga flow.

How to fold a travel yoga mat? Traditionally, yoga mats are rolled up. This can cause inconvenience when travelling, instead you could opt for a folding yoga mat which can be folded into a more compact shape. To do this, fold your mat in halves until you reach a size that will fit into your suitcase or bag, this works best with thinner mats.

How to clean a travel yoga mat? To clean a travel yoga mat, we recommend using a gentle cleansing spray and wiping down with a damp cloth. For tough stains you can use a soft and gentle brush in circular motions. Some yoga travel mats are more like mat towels, and can be placed into the washing machine on a gentle cycle. However, you should always check the care instructions of your mat before placing in the washing machine. Additionally, you should ensure that your mat is laid flat to dry before rolling it up, and store it out of direct sunlight.

Is a lightweight yoga mat best for travel? A lightweight mat is great for travelling. If space is not an issue, you may wish to choose a lightweight mat over a foldable mat, as they may offer further support. Many yoga practitioners prefer a lightweight yoga mat when travelling rather than a standard mat, as this allows the mat to be taken to outdoor locations more easily, such as the beach or forest. Lightweight mats can be more easily carried, and some are also foldable so can be tucked away in a backpack or tote bag for convenience.

What is better, a rubber or PVC yoga mat? Which material is best depends on both your personal preference and the type of yoga you practice. For example, PVC mats are more sticky and have a good grip but only when they are dry. For hot yoga, they would need to be supplemented with a yoga towel mat or replaced with a rubber or jute mat may be best. However, rubber mats are usually heavier than other types of material so if you are planning to transport your mat, you might wish to opt for a lighter material.

The Best Yoga Mats for Any Practice, According to Instructors

Our editors independently select the products we recommend. We may earn a commission on items bought through our links.

Let's face it: When you're contorting your body into pretzel-like shapes, the last thing you need is a slippery, flimsy excuse for a mat sending you sprawling onto your neighbor's during a class. And no one wants to be that guy in the corner desperately trying to maintain his warrior pose on a gross mat that's seen better days. Whether you're a rookie or a seasoned yogi, a proper yoga mat to keep you safe and centered (quite literally) to reap the benefits of your session .

But investing in the right yoga mat isn't just about avoiding embarrassing faceplants. It also symbolizes a readiness and commitment to practice, says Nicholas Duran , an E-RYT 200 certified yoga instructor, NASM-certified personal trainer, and fitness and movement pro at Equinox and Sanctuary Fitness in Los Angeles. "For me, a mat symbolizes a time when I'm trying to center myself and tune in on my body," he says. "Part of that is being on my own mat. It forms a continuity of practice."

Plus, a solid mat can serve your focus and frame of mind, too. "You end up forming a bit of a connection with your mat," Duran continues. "It becomes this little space that signifies, ‘OK, this is yoga time'."

Forget the basic mats you thought you knew. Today's yoga mats are thicker, grippier, and more moisture-resistant than ever before, designed to withstand the sweatiest of sessions, and indoor-outdoor environments, and serve workouts beyond yoga. And the great news? It's possible to score a high-quality mat in a variety of lengths, comfortable materials, and your preferred thickness at a budget-friendly price (starting at $20) or a more premium one (around $100).

Choosing can feel overwhelming but fear not, yoga warriors: With the help of yoga and fitness experts, SPY researched the best yoga mats for any practice, no matter how you're getting your "om" on.

What the Experts Say

SPY asked fitness experts - Duran and Brette Berlin Scott , an E-RYT 500 yoga instructor and owner of Shakti Yoga in Des Moines, Iowa - to weigh in on the best yoga mats for peace of mind and stability for any practice. Much like a trusty pair of running shoes or a solid set of weights, they say that it's important to have a safe, yet comfortable, foundation to perform your best. "A quality yoga mat supports your practice," says Scott, "[while] an ineffective mat can be a nuisance, distracting, and even a little dangerous." A well-made mat can last years under frequent weekly use, she says, so it's worth an investment.

That being said, both experts agree that you have to break the bank for a mat that will work very well and you should consider your personal needs, preferences, and the style of yoga you'll be doing most often. Perhaps you prefer a firm mat that gives you a grounded, level surface beneath you, while others need a little more cushion, says Scott. Or if you sweat a lot, you'll want a mat with plenty of grip in a material that absorbs moisture to prevent slipping, adds Duran.

When it's time to roll out the welcome mat for your new yoga companion, here are the main things SPY's experts say you should consider:

Size: First of all, you want to be moving comfortably in your flow, so choose a yoga mat that's an appropriate size for your height. A too-short or narrow mat may restrict movement and be uncomfortable, especially in poses requiring extended reach or lateral movement. On the other hand, an unnecessarily large mat can be a pain to transport and store if you don't need the extra footprint. The average mat is around 68 to 72 inches long and 24 inches wide, but many companies make larger mats for yogis needing extra room.

Materials: A yoga mat's materials can significantly impact its performance and durability. Different materials offer varying levels of grip, support, eco-friendliness, and longevity, so it's important to consider whether the mat you're eyeing meets your needs and aligns with your values, says Duran. Functionally speaking, he prefers a mat that makes him feel stable and locked into position, with great grip for sweaty palms and feet during downward dog, warrior, and other poses. "You don't necessarily want to feel like you're on a slip n' slide," he says, "especially if it's a heated (hot yoga) class."

Most mats are made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), natural rubber, or PVC (polyvinyl chloride).  For those concerned with their environmental footprint, TPE mats are recyclable and have a "rubber" feel, while natural rubber mats have slip-resistant traction and are biodegradable. PVC mats offer high-grip durability, and are easy to clean, but are less eco-friendly and may release low levels of harmful chemicals at high temperatures (e.g. hot yoga temps)–while considered low-risk, scientists are still studying these concerns. SPY's takeaway: as long as you aim for quality and longevity in a mat made with materials you're comfortable with, there are plenty of safe, affordable options on the market that will serve you well for a long while before needing to upgrade.

Cell Type: Put your biology book away, the cell type of a yoga mat actually refers to its porosity, or ability to absorb or repel moisture–which is a crucial factor for maintaining grip and stability during practice, especially when sweat or humidity is concerned. Mats with closed-cell construction repel moisture, preventing perspiration from seeping into the mat, are hygienic (often marketed as "antimicrobial"), and are easier to clean. Open-cell mats absorb sweat, providing better slip-resistant traction for high-intensity, power yoga workouts, but require more regular cleaning and a thorough airing out to prevent odors and bacteria buildup inside.

Thickness: From 3 millimeters to 9 millimeters, yoga mats also come in a variety of thicknesses, which affects their cushioning and support. Thicker mats offer more cushioning for individuals with sensitive knees, elbows, wrists, or achy joints, especially if you're practicing on flat, hard surfaces, says Duran. But thinner mats provide a firmer, stable surface for better balance and a grounded feeling during balance or focused poses, and can be helpful on uneven surfaces outdoors. "It's more challenging to balance on something super soft," he says, "not impossible, but it works your proprioception more." On the extreme, too thin a mat might compromise durability, especially if the material is soft and inexpensive, Consider your comfort needs, skill level, and the types of yoga you practice

Weight : Duran says to keep in mind that your mat's size, materials, and thickness will determine how heavy it will be, and likely impact its ease of portability. Thinner mats can weigh as little as 2 pounds, making them more compact and travel-friendly, while plusher or more durable mats can weigh upwards of seven pounds, possibly making your commute a bit more tedious.

BEST OVERALL

Manduka Pro Yoga Mat

Buy now on amazon, buy now at rei co-op, buy now at manduka.

The Manduka Pro Yoga Mat is a consistent favorite at SPY and among seasoned yogis and instructors. Duran loves this 6-millimeter-thick mat for its join-friendly cushion and balanced grip. He does note that the closed-cell surface, while antimicrobial, can become more slippery when wet, so keep a hand towel within reach if your sessions get sweaty. Like a fine wine, however, this mat ages beautifully with time, and does become grippier the more you use it. It's also covered by a lifetime guarantee.

Renowned for its high quality and longevity, this luxe mat is sustainably made with OEKO-TEX certified-safe PVC and closed-cell materials to keep your practice hygienic and safe. Ultra-dense and comfortable, it feels secure on any surface thanks to the non-slip bottom, and its spacious 71 by 26-inch dimension allows room for most to flow–they make a long version for the tall yogis, too.

At $138, the Pro is one of the priciest options on our list. But considering users get several years of practice from it, SPY considers this mat an exceptional, worthwhile investment.

BEST BUDGET

IUGA Yoga Mat (Non-Slip, Anti-Tear, and Eco-Friendly)

This IUGA Yoga Mat is proof that you don't have to go broke to secure a solid mat. Crafted from eco-friendly TPE, this wallet-friendly mat delivers top-notch durability and performance without breaking the bank. Thanks to a double-sided non-slip surface, it provides a reliably versatile foundation for several modes of exercise beyond a yoga ritual. Its 6-millimeter cushion strikes the perfect balance, offering firm stability for precarious standing positions while remaining soft on wrists and joints.

Not only is this thrifty mat one of SPY's most lightweight mats at just two pounds, but it's also durable with an impressive grip for both beginners and intermediate yogis to lean into every downward dog, side plank, or tree pose. The mat's open-cell design efficiently absorbs sweat, maintaining its grippy texture even during intense classes.

With comparable quality to some pricier alternatives, the IUGA Yoga Mat is an impressive value for $37 and even comes with a free carrying strap.

BEST FOR BEGINNERS

Healthyoga Eco-Friendly Non-Slip Yoga Mat

If you're just getting into yoga, this mat with alignment markings can help guide you through the learning curve. Like a set of training wheels on a bike, the attractive and subtle design gives starter yogis a reference point for angles and body, feet, and hand positioning, which can help with balance, form, and focus, SPYs experts say.

Beginners love its 72 by 26-inch size that gives ample room for error, should you lose your balance, but the textured grip and firm, double-sided surface provide a stable platform for mistakes. As stable as it is, it's still comfortable for newbies with tender joints and knees, thanks to 6 millimeters of cushion. And fresh yogis will find caring for this mat easy thanks to its close-celled construction that repels sweat and dirt - but don't forget to pick up a mat towel at checkout for your hot yoga sessions.

This durable, eco-friendly TPE mat is also super affordable, too, at just $40, another great selling point for beginners testing the waters of their new habit, says Duran. With the savings, you can invest in extra instruction that will have you glancing at your mat less and less!

BEST FOR HOT YOGA

Jade Harmony Professional Yoga Mat

Buy at rei co-op, buy at yoga accessories, buy at bed bath & beyond, $71.99 $91.99, buy at jade yoga.

If you've ever done a power flow, you know the benefits of an extra grippy, non-slip mat like Jade's Harmony Professional Yoga Mat. "As far as picking the right mat, one thing that I definitely look for is a non-slip mat, especially if it's a heated class," says Duran. "I've practiced on, but don't own, a Jade mat, and they're really good. I like the non-slip [open cell] material." With its open cell construction, and grippy, natural rubber the Harmony combats sweat and humidity when classes get steamy.

With the "just right" level of 5-millimeter cushion and support, the Harmony mat lives up to its namesake as a balanced feature mat that's also eco-consciously made with fully biodegradable, natural rubber. Jade even plants a tree for every mat it sells (which are USA-made, by the way), so if sustainability and lessening your ecological footprint is your jam, Harmony is your mat.

This mindfully made mat retails for $92, which is steeper than some, but certainly worth every penny if you want a high-quality, eco-friendly mat to support your practice through any session intensity or environment.

Also Consider: Lululemon's The Mat is another super grippy, open-cell natural rubber mat that Duran personally uses in his practice for its non-slip features. It comes in a standard and extra spacious size (one of SPY's list of top yoga mat picks) and is also sustainably made.

BEST EXTRA-LONG

Lululemon The Big Mat

Yogis who require (or merely prefer) a more sizable mat will love this roomy 28 by 84-inch mat by Lululemon. The (Big) Mat features the same open-cell construction (with an antimicrobial additive), and 5-millimeter cushion as The Mat (Lululemon's standard version), Duran's personal favorite and the one he uses in his practice. This larger version is double-sided with textured natural rubber on one, and smooth polyurethane on the flip for a variety of grip and workout versatility.

"One surface has a little bit more grip to it for the ground, which I really like because I find I don't really slide [with it]," he says. "I have one for outside and one for inside!" Both sides offer exceptional wet and dry grip versatility, with the smooth side adapting to increased grip and absorbance when wet. Note: this mat isn't latex-free, so those with rubber or latex allergies should avoid this mat.

The (Big) Mat rolls up tightly and is also relatively lightweight for its size, weighing 7 pounds (the same weight as some smaller, thicker mats). It is a little spendy with its $124 price tag, but you do get quality and quite a bit of comfortable real estate for the investment.

Also consider: If you're on a budget, Giam's Athletic Yoga Seriew dynMat Xtra-Wide Mat is a comparably spacious mat with dimensions of 78 by 26 inches and ample 5-millimeter thickness at a wallet-friendly price point. And if you're after a group session, say with a partner, a couple of BFFs, or the kiddos, Gorilla Mats Premium Large Yoga Mat spans 7 by 5 feet floor space–enough to fit a few yogis - and features 8 millimeters of dense, grippy cushion for barefoot practice, pilates, or strength training sessions. This big mat comes in even more sizable options to equip your personal studio.

BEST FOR HOME GYMS

SPRI Hanging Exercise Mat

$46.61 $69.98, buy at get actv, $49.98 - $69.98, buy at fitness 1st.

For an extra versatile, extra thick yoga mat with a built-in storage solution, SPRI's Hanging Exercise Mat has two sturdy rivets on one end for ease of use in any home studio. Not only does this space-maximizing mat come in multiple two different sizes, a petitely compact 56 by 23 inch and a 71 by 23 inch (standard yoga mat dimensions), but there are two thicknesses to choose from, an ample 9.5 or extra plush 15.9-millimeter cushion.

But don't let "thick" be mistaken for pillowy, as the mat is made from dense, commercial-grade foam to transform your space into a personal gym. In fact, this mat lays nice and flat, providing a stable surface for yoga, lifting, HIIT, and so much more. The best part: when you're done, sanitize the closed cell surface and hang it on your wall–no rolling required!

At most, this heavy-duty mat costs $70, depending on the size. Considering the beating it can take, as well as the versatility, it's a perfect space-efficient accessory for any fitness-minded yogi.

BEST FOR TRAVEL

Manduka EKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

$41.60 $52.00, buy at zappos, buy at dicks sporting goods.

Jett-setting yogis will love this lightweight, travel-friendly mat that folds or rolls small for toting in a suitcase or bag so you never have to miss a session on the go. Made from non-toxic, eco-friendly natural rubber, this 24 by 71-inch yoga mat is a standard size, but thin (1.5 millimeters) and super light, weighing a mere 2.2 pounds.

Like the Manduka Pro Yoga Mat, this mat's made with a closed cell, antimicrobial surface to lock out moisture, odors, and bacteria, making it a bit slicker than others, but it does get even better and grippier the more you use it. This makes it ideal for getting in your Vinyasa flow wherever you go, then safe to stow in your suitcase afterward without causing a stink.

Splurging on a second mat might seem a little "extra," but at a reasonable $52, you and your practice will thank us later.

Also consider: An honorable mention shoutout to another mat we love with similar portability and performance is the Yoloha Yoga Travel Cork Yoga Mat , which weighs a slight 2 pounds and also folds or rolls for easy packing.

BEST OUTDOOR

Yoloha Yoga Unity Cork Yoga Mat

Earthy yogis who practice outdoors might want to consider Yoloha Yoga's rugged Unity Cork Toga Mat. Made from natural cork and recycled rubber, this firm 6.5-millimeter mat is extra durable and stable atop sandy, grassy, or rocky terrain. Supported by 3 millimeters of dense rubber underfoot, it provides ample protection and a grounded feeling against the elements. And when your sun salutations heat up, the Unity's smooth, antimicrobial cork surface acts quickly to absorb moisture for enhanced grip when wet so you can reach for the sky without faltering.

To accommodate all kinds of outdoorsy yogis, the Unity comes in a spacious standard size, 72 by 26 inches, along with two larger dimensions, an 80 by 26-inch plus an even more generous 84 by 30-inch mat. And appropriately, the mat is sustainably made in the United States with a carbon-neutral delivery option via EcoCart for mindful shoppers who want a minimal impact on the environment with the mat purchase.

This versatile and long-lasting indoor-outdoor mat does come with a higher price tag of $160 (standard size), but many consider the mat a wise investment in the planet's future, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga Mats

Can i use an exercise mat for yoga.

Exercise mats, such as foam pads, pilates mats, or weight lifting mats, vary in thickness, grip, and size than a standard yoga mat. For example, pilates mats are squishier to protect the pelvis during pilates moves while lying on your back, side, stomach, etc., Duran explains. "For yoga, you want something that doesn't ‘give' that much when you're on your feet, especially if you're doing balanced-based stuff," he says. Some cushioning helps protect the knees, elbows, and joints, but since balance can already be challenging, you'll want a proper yoga mat with ample grip that lets you feel connected to the ground as you move through your flow.

Is Expensive Always Better When it Comes to Yoga Mats?

More expensive yoga mats often offer higher-quality materials, durability, and features such as double-sided textures, enhanced grip, and sustainability. However, while a pricier mat may provide additional benefits, the best yoga mat for you depends on your individual preferences, needs, and budget. Whether you prioritize sustainability, grip, or longevity, all levels of yogis still have plenty of budget-friendly options that can offer adequate support and performance.

"There's nothing wrong with buying a mat off Amazon for $30, especially if someone is just getting into their practice," says Duran, who understands how newbies trying yoga for the first time might be unsure of how deeply they want to commit, and only require a starter mat for once or twice a week. "What I find, usually, is that once you realize that you enjoy whatever it is that you're doing (whether it be yoga, Pilates, or cycle) and get into the habit, you'll want to invest more into it." That said, Scott warns against going too thrifty on your mat purchase, even as a beginner. "Cheaper mats often break down quickly, are slippery, or bulge when you move," says Scott, so gauge your investment according to your intention and frequency of practice, support needs, and comfort preferences.

Are There Any Yoga Mats I Definitely Shouldn't Buy?

While there isn't "one mat to rule them all," there are certain yoga mats you might want to avoid based on your specific needs and preferences. Mats made from low-quality materials, such as cheap PVC or foam may lack durability and support, leading to a distracting or unsafe yoga experience. Mats with poor traction, strong chemical odors, or those that don't roll out flush with the ground can hinder your practice and even pose health risks, so it's essential to research and invest in a mat from a trustworthy brand.

"I'm not trying to tell someone that going to Target and picking up just a basic mat there wouldn't be great (because it potentially could be)," says Duran, "but if your practice is a regular habit, I would invest a little bit more." He suggests spending money on a mat that has the kind of features you need and prefer and placing less emphasis on those you don't. For example, a fitness and yoga instructor with a dance background, Duran prefers a thinner, grounded mat that still has enough cushion for his sensitive knees, which he finds many low-end mats don't provide. Sometimes spending a little bit more to get a feature you want or need is worth it.

How Do I Clean a Yoga Mat So It Doesn't Smell Like Feet?

Yoga mats (especially more porous, open-cell mats) can become breeding grounds for sweat, grime, odor-causing bacteria, and other germs, which can make you and your neighboring floor mates sick. To keep your yoga mat fresh , regularly wipe it down with a clean towel after each use to remove sweat and bacteria, according to the manufacturer's instructions, since some materials can break down with certain cleansers. Duran recommends using warm water and a gentle cleanser, while Scott prefers a naturally antiseptic solution such as water and a little bit of tea tree oil–again, depending on the mat material.

For a deep cleaning, every so often, some brands suggest equal parts water and white vinegar then gently scrub the mat with a soft cloth or sponge. Several companies also make natural and gentle mat cleaners. Always let your mat air dry thoroughly to eliminate odors and maintain the mat's freshness for your next practice. Expert tip: Duran also suggests high-grip yoga socks can be helpful for a more hygienic practice, especially if you share a mat, and recommends washing your hands after each session, too.

What's the Best Way to Store a Yoga Mat?

After you use your mat, roll it up, rather than folding it, to prevent creases and damage to the material, says Duran. Store your rolled mat in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, like a closet or corner of a room–somewhere easy to access–so it maintains its shape and integrity. He also says it's worth investing in a handy yoga mat sling, straps, or bag with additional storage that's easy to grab and go while doubling as protective storage to keep your mat clean and protected.
