Escape Journey Vol. 1 Review

A confounding slice-of-life romance.

Newly released by SuBLime Manga, Escape Journey Vol. 1 is a slice-of-life romance by Ogeretsu Tanaka. The series stars Naoto and Taichi, a pair of college students who used to be lovers back in high school. They run into each other again shortly after arriving on campus, and soon find themselves going through familiar motions both good and bad. Have they changed enough over time for their relationship to play out differently on a second try? Is Escape Journey good?

First and foremost, this is a beautiful manga. Virtually every aspect of the art is pleasing to look at and contributes to the volume’s atmosphere and emotional weight. The characters are very expressive, thanks largely to the amount of attention Tanaka pays to small details. For example, in one panel where Naoto is crying he’s biting his lip and his brow is furrowed realistically. The shading throughout is also notably good, with fantastic hatching and consistently depicted light sources. There’s a lot of lovely nature imagery in the backgrounds as well, plus some fantastic double page spreads that heighten some of the most dramatic moments.

There’s also a lot to love here plot-wise. The protagonists’ personalities are well-defined and their dialogue sounds natural (at least throughout the volume’s first half). Tanaka analyzes the unique pressures and social stigmas attached to gay couples, including the limitations of what terms they can use when referring to each other. One of the saddest moments in the volume is when Naoto laments that (in his mind, at least) the pair could never get married and become family. All in all, Tanaka does a solid job depicting many of the obstacles faced by gay men in homophobic society.

There are a number of other enjoyable details to the story as well. The supporting characters get a surprisingly high amount of page-time, allowing them to be a bit more thoroughly fleshed out than similar characters in other boys’ love titles. The main characters’ specific vocal ticks and speech patterns are also great, as they help distinguish Naoto and Taichi from both each other and other yaoi protagonists. Details like these really enhance the quality of the narrative in the first half.

Unfortunately, not all of the volume meets that high bar. There’s one scene roughly halfway through the story that doesn’t get treated with anywhere near the necessary level of seriousness, and it negates much of the strong character work both before and after it. Said scene involves an instance of rape that never gets acknowledged as such by any of the characters, and that results in no consequences whatsoever. This complete and utter lack of follow-up stains the rest of the volume, as it leaves the characters involved looking like a monster and like a victim with serious unacknowledged trauma respectively.

Overall, Escape Journey Vol. 1 is a confounding book. There are several aspects of it that are excellent, from its artwork to its handling of social stigmas against gay people. Unfortunately, one event in the middle sours the sweetness of the otherwise poignant volume, as a rape goes unaddressed and the perpetrator is never held accountable. What could have been a touching romance is instead deeply undermined by the terrible implications of how said assault is addressed. If this scene was cut out then the book would be lovely, but as is Escape Journey makes me disappointed given what it could have been.

Synopsis [ ]

In college, Naoto has an unexpected reunion with ex‐boyfriend Taichi who he broke up with for claiming their relationship was for sexual release only. Naoto has been carrying this old resentment, but little by little his heart is starting to forgive Taichi, who has really grown compared to their time in high school…All the while, their friend Fumi‐chan seems to have fallen in love with Taichi…? As friends, they have extraordinary compatibility, but turning it into love isn’t going too well. A scar‐covered love story!

Character [ ]

Hisami naoto [ ].

Liking food, clothes, drinks, and events, Naoto's communication skills are considered to be high. A "close talker" he has a lot of friends, but is not really popular with the ladies. Naoto's favourite foods are tofu and soybean stuff, he can eat and eat and never have enough. Labelling Taichi as seriously obnoxious, Naoto adds if he knew this he never would have gone out with him. One year later Naoto has began college life and thinks maybe he will be able to get a new girlfriend. Checking his phone Naoto is pleased that he already has seven girls and finds it has been surprisingly easy, given the high level of these girls. Asking if the game Yuu-pon is playing is Kumapin (a smartphone game) and sharing he plays that too, Naoto had been worried if he would be able to make friends. Discovering that Taichi is also at the same university Naoto appears horrified, this is seriously the worst way to start the school year. Exuberantly declaring that he and Taichi are not just acquainted, but he is his ex-boyfriend, is what an idiot would say, so Naoto simply comments they went to high school together. In a low volume Naoto demands to know what Taichi is doing here, and why they are even in the same department. Questioning was Taichi not into science, Naoto states they are not even the related subjects so he should just walk his ass out of here. In a restaurant together Naoto remarks that Taichi has gotten over his shyness. Feeling the others should not have left them, Naoto thinks maybe he can escape by saying he is going to the convenience store. Contemplating whether Taichi is acting so normal, Naoto recalls he only went out with him for a little while in high school. Remembering a time when they and others played with a water hose Naoto recollects that every time he saw Taichi after that for the next two months he was always smiling from ear to ear. Pondering how he and Taichi were no good as a couple Naoto wonders if it would go well if they went back to friends. After a night out Naoto would like Taichi to stay in bed with him. With his glasses off Naoto professes to not be able to see anything. As they kiss Naoto's mind knows they should not be doing this, Taichi and him do not work as a couple, and they should never try to be more than friends.

Hase Taichi [ ]

Considered to have a handsome face but somewhat communicatively challenged, Taichi's favourite foods are Nikujaga and omelets. His hobbies are watching baby animal videos on YouTube. Described as a very jealous person, Taichi loves intensely. When speaking with Noato that they went to high school together, later Taichi would remark he thought they were just friends satisfying each other's urges. With Sayama he comes across Naoto at the same university. Taichi claims to others around that he and Noato were in the same class in their first year but never really connected after that. Saying that he changed interests, Taichi continues that even if they share departments and friends, it cannot be helped if they do not get along. Still having his old slider phone, Taichi says it would be annoying if he had to change his email address. Handing Naoto some soy milk, Taichi guesses he remembered that he liked it. With Mika and Fumi joining them, Taichi turns to Naoto who he calls Nao, and says for them to go to the library, he wants to watch a DVD. Helping Naoto with signing up for classes on the computer, Taichi ruffles his hair while saying not to give him that face. Having taken a photo of a guy snoozing in class and drooling Taichi says for Nao to check this out. Where the rain hinders Naoto's vision since he wears glasses Taichi guides him to come this way. Asking if he is okay and not too cold, Taichi mentions how Naoto probably does not remember but around the beginning of their first year of high school he was super shy so did not really feel like he fitted in with the class. At seeing Naoto laughing when soaked with water where he wasn't, Taichi would then join in the merriment as well. Presently, Taichi brings Naoto back to his after a night out. Asked if he is looking for a one night stand Taichi replies for Naoto to stop saying stuff like that.

Yuki Mika [ ]

Described as not having a hint of malice in her, Mika is always relying on Fumi. Changing boyfriends often she likes those that dress like the band, Exile. Since she does not have any hobbies Mika is the type that spends time talking over LINE with her boyfriend. While Mika seems strong willed she is quickly moved to tears. Mika's favorite food is pancakes. She is a different person without makeup. Greeting Naoto on campus Mika reveals they have second period free, then asks whether the guy beside him, Taichi, is in the foreign language department too.

Matsuyama Fumi [ ]

Stated to be a late bloomer, Fumi's hobbies are trying new restaurants. Her favourite foods are steamed buns with red bean paste or pizza filling. After eating a bit Fumi is satisfied. Best friends with Mika since high school Fumi's heart becomes steadily stronger. She is with Mika when meeting Naoto and Taichi where they arrange plans together on Sunday.

Yuu-pon [ ]

While playing Kumapin on his phone Yuu-pon is befriended by Naoto where he is also a foreign language major. Saying to leave it to him to get Naoto to level 90, Yuu-pon then remembers he had already arranged to meet up with a guy he knew in high school and adds Naoto should come too. The cherry in his Twitter ID is because he happened to like eating cherries. In town Yuu-pon hears Taichi will take Naoto back to his place and replies he is his hero, he would not carry Naoto's stuff even if he paid him.

Friends with Yuu-pon since high school, at university Sayama is happy to share he made a friend too, Taichi.

Shunsuke [ ]

In the group headed to the Chinese restaurant, Shunsuke is said to have French 2nd period.

Michael [ ]

Naoto mentions how third period is with Michael and Taichi cannot miss it.

Hase Taichi has been wanting to meet and talk to Hisami Naoto and now is his chance. Later, Naoto mentions he never should have gone out with Taichi, who was unaware that they were dating. In response Noato stated he never wanted to see Taichi again. One year later Noato has enrolled in the foreign language program at university. With the new student ceremony concluded, Naoto has befriended Yuu-pon. When Yuu-pon introduces Naoto to his friend from high school, Sayama, he is there with Taichi. While Naoto and Taichi do not reveal the extent of their connection, the group then head out for a ramen exploration party. After Naoto angrily speaks at Taichi for being here too, they find the Chinese Cuisine Xiexie restaurant. With French classes and 3rd period guidance together, the group then splits up leaving just Naoto and Taichi. After Mika and Fumi join them, Taichi and Naoto alone head to the library. Naoto recollects how he and Taichi were friends but when they became a couple they fought constantly. In the end they were not even able to return to being friends before they graduated from high school.

Naoto and Taichi laugh together in their lecture. Having been getting ramen for lunch three times a week, they then find it has began to rain. Taking cover, Taichi mentions their time in high school. One time during P.E Taichi got splashed with water from a hose. Naoto was laughing like crazy and since Taichi was drenched and not laughing it seemed like he was being made fun of. Once he saw what was happening Taichi got lured into laughing like an idiot with the rest of them. Mentioning how 3rd period is with Michael, to himself Naoto feels he and Taichi are no good as a couple, but wonders if they could go back to being friends. With girls mentioning going out with Naoto for drinks, Taichi interjects to raise how Naoto was going out drinking with them today. When Naoto is saying their next class is all the way in building 5 Taichi has been tugging on his arm and saying for them to let's go. In town Naoto calls for them to go to a lively club, "Pure" is pretty near here. After Taichi brings Naoto back to his place they end up kissing despite Naoto's reservations. Naoto lies in bed thinking that they just did that. [1]
