The first hotel in Athens was in a bad looking neighborhood, full of graffitis, even though it was centrally located, I was afraid to walk after dark. There were homeless people and sketchy people all around our hotel. Our room was small and the bathroom tiny. I am small and thin, but it was a challenge to take a shower in such a tiny space. The hotel staff was unfriendly and not helpful.

Thankfully, the next two hotels met expectations, even though one of them on Mykonos island was not centrally located and we had to walk on narrow roads dodging fast drivers to reach the nearest restaurants and public bus stations to reach the main town center. Taxis and Ubers were too expensive especially on the Greece islands.

Our last destination was Santorini , which should have been the capstone of the trip, was ruined due to the hotel. We could have accepted that the hotel was not centrally located to town except for the room had a foul smell and the bed being up in a loft with steep staircase. Given the age group of the tour, mostly people in their 50s-60s, the bed situation is downright dangerous. I had to hang tight to the railings going down the stairs at night. My husband slept downstairs on the couch.

I don't recommend Exoticca. They pulled a classic bait and switch on unsuspecting victims. I would have gladly paid extra $500 or more to get decent hotel rooms. Their crime is false advertisements and they should be reported to all social media and government agencies. I vowed to do this in my last email to Exxotica and I am keeping that promise with this review.

Never ever again will I use Exoticca. Aside from the hotel problems, there were no communications when we arrived at the destinations, everyone was on their own as far as reaching out to Exxotica or their local travel partners to find out about pick up times, etc. There was no tour manager, we had different local guides at each location.

Most people on our tour was not happy with Exxotica, but miraculously, we managed to have a good time because of the history and beauty of Greece, friendly people and delicious food.

"My recommendation to Exoticca is to improve this primary hotel and their reviews will increase."

Travel agencies like this "Exoticca" don't care at all about customers' suggestions and comments about the selected hotels.

These are generally low-end and poorly located hotels which make their profit mainly with tour operators or travel agencies.

Why would they want to improve since, whatever happens, these travel agencies will regularly send them new gullible customers.

Exoticca Travel Review: A Reliable & Legit Tour Operator?

Predesigned itineraries and travel packages are life savers for some travelers. Exoticca is one of the number-one travel package choices, but are its services a good investment of your time and money?

exotica greece tours

If your next trip is coming up, you're probably busy making all the plans. Hours and hours later, you've done all the research possible and made several phone calls to create a successful trip.

You and I both know it—behind every successful trip, a traveler works overtime to organize everything effectively.

But worry not! If you want to skip it all, you can ditch the entire planning stage by going with Exoticca Travel. Once you've decided on the customized package you want, all you need to do is pay and enjoy your trip stress-free.

Oh, and it's still essential to remember budget travel tips if you're trying to ensure your trip stays affordable and within your budget!

But does this sound too good to be true? And what about using competitor travel booking agencies, like Luxury Escapes or G-Adventures ?

In my Exoticca Travel review, you'll find everything you need to decide whether this trip-planning company is the way to book your next getaway. I'll go over things like features, areas of improvement, and even other customer reviews.

Find out what you need to know so that you won't regret spending your hard-earned money!

What Is Exoticca Travel?

Exoticca is an online travel agency that delivers customizable and premade travel bundles. The packages can be for multiple countries, and it has travel packages for each continent.

Exoticca Travel has been operating since 2013 after Pere Vallespí founded it. The company initially started in Spain. But now Exoticca is branching out to Western countries as well.

As of my article's publishing date, the company also operates in Canada and the United States.

Exoticca is all about taking the planning stress off your shoulders! Whether you’re into exploring new places, chilling in luxury, or even dreaming about the perfect honeymoon, it's got something for everyone.

Exoticca travel experts handle the nitty-gritty—transportation, accommodation, and activities—so all you need to do is kick back and enjoy your vacation!

How Does Exoticca Work?

Exoticca operates as a comprehensive travel platform. As I mentioned, it aims to streamline your vacation planning process and provide a variety of travel experiences.

But how does it do it, and are the deals legit?

Exoticca's low prices and diverse offerings are made possible based on a few factors.

First off, Exoticca travel agency has partnerships with local providers and sub-contractors to actually carry out the tours. That means that the company is able to offer localized vacation packages in diverse locations, whether it's a trek through the Amazon or an island-hopping itinerary through Greece.

Another thing to remember is that Exoticca has been in business for a while. That means that it has done strategic negotiations with suppliers and partners to keep giving customers great prices.

Another factor to its pricing is that Exoticca Travel bundles its services and, therefore, leverages economies of scale. In simpler terms, because it does repeat business and can book larger groups, it can sometimes get better prices than you doing it on your own!

How to Use Exoticca Travel?

Using Exoticca's website is quite simple due to its user-friendly interface. The team always aims to make everything seamless for travelers.

Similarly, with a few easy steps, you can easily book your next vacation with Exoticca Travel:

  • When you enter their website, you'll get bombarded with colorful visuals. Scroll through all the travel packages. You can also search by continent or travel style. These options are on the menu bar.
  • After choosing the package that intrigues you, it is time to review the plan. The package mentions all the trip highlights and what things are included in the program.
  • If you want to add or remove something from the itinerary, you can do that. Then, contact an Exoticca travel advisor.
  • If the itinerary seems satisfying, it's time to make your reservation!
  • Exoticca Travel will ask for your details. And you'll need to sign the terms and conditions.
  • Lastly, pay the deposit amount.

Exoticca Travel's customer service will assist you through every step to improve your experience.

Examples of Exoticca Itineraries

So I've been telling you all about the vacations that Exoticca offers. But that's not the same as actually hearing about examples.

I find that sometimes people like specific examples instead of more broad statements. That's why I wanted to lay out some of the trips that seemed interesting to me while I was researching Exoticca:

  • Southeast Asian Odyssey: This is a 19-day/17-night itinerary that takes travelers through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand for 50% off, meaning customers only pay ~US$3,599 per person currently.
  • Wildlife Parks & Serengeti Safari: Explore Tanzania for 9 days and 7 nights, seeing beautiful landscapes and exciting wildlife for ~$6,499 per person.
  • Land of the Berbers, Madrid & Barcelona: Join a group to see Spain and Morocco over 16 days and 14 nights—you'll only pay $3,499 per person, which is 35% off Exoticca's regular pricing for this trip.

I've included some pricing here, but please be mindful that this changes quickly. I wanted to make you aware of the prices I saw so that you can better gauge the deals that Exoticca offers—even if you don't see the same promotions!

The Best Features of Exoticca Travel

Exoticca Travel is winning many travelers' hearts through its unique services. If you are wondering why people are raving about this platform, this is because of the features. Let's look at some of the most loved features of Exoticca tours.

Expert Planning Guidance

One of the main winning points of Exoticca Travel is professionalism. Besides, you can consult their travel specialist to plan your trip. The travel specialist is knowledgeable about all the destinations.

In addition, Exoticca can help you customize your plans within your budget. The Exoticca travel specialists can also enlighten you about each destination.

Reliability

Reliability is a huge factor when you are planning with a travel agency. With Exoticca Travel, you don't have to second-guess its reliability.

Firstly, it's a well-known company in many traveling communities.

Exoticca Travel is a United States Tour Operators Association member and the International Air Transport Association. Being transparent with the customer is one of its top priorities.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) Logo

Notable Customer Service

Exoticca tries to have transparent two-way communication with its users. The customer service representatives have expert knowledge about dealing with inquiries.

Customer service care is reachable from social media, emails, and live chats. The customer support team always aims to get back to you through emails within 48 hours.

You can even chat with customer service staff through live chat.

It's also worth mentioning that these service representatives can also give you helpful insights. They can provide recommendations and guides as well.

Customizable

This feature is Exoticca's main selling point. You can mix and match your traveling plans. On top of that, there are several options for traveling styles. You can even choose what season you want to travel in.

Exoticca Travel is providing you the level of flexibility to add your interests as well. Simply put, this trip planning company gives you the blueprint for your trip plans.

What Is the Pricing of Exoticca Travel?

When it comes to pricing, it depends on each package. The multi-country package will be more expensive than a single-country package.

That said, Exoticca Travel tries to maintain competitive pricing. It wants to provide the best value within your budget.

Due to the freedom of customization, you can also edit to try and match your price. If you want, you can select luxury travel or budget travel. Exoticca also shows the best price available within the season.

Exoticca Travel will ask you to deposit 30% of the total amount. Around 60 days before, you need to pay the final payment.

The company accepts cards, mobile banking, and bank transfers.

Does Exoticca Travel Have a Return Policy?

The worst nightmare of every travel enthusiast is trip cancellation, or lack there of.

Uncertainties are inevitable, and there are many cases where you have to cancel at the last moment. But no worries—Exoticca Travel has a well-structured refund policy.

If you cancel the trip before the final payment, you can get a refund on your deposit. That means you must cancel for a refund at least 60 days prior.

It can become tricky to get a refund if you cancel after making the final payment. In most cases, you might have to pay a penalty or a cancellation fee.

One extra thing to consider is that Exoticca offers one of the best travel insurance options. It gives coverage for accidents or other unpredictable situations.

How Can Exoticca Travel Benefit You?

Exoticca Travel can make your travel experience less stressful. This platform is handy for travelers who find planning difficult. Casual travelers or vacationers can also use this platform.

Its predesigned packages can give you a starting point for your plans. Moreover, for busy people, Exoticca's services are highly effective.

Plus, you might not have adequate information about the destination if you're a beginner traveler. So, Exoticca fills up that gap with expert travel specialists.

Planning with a travel agency has advantages. You can get insurance and support when things don't go right. And for example, Exoticca Travel takes care of incidents like lost baggage or medical situations.

That said, there are also negative reviews of Exoticca Travel online.

A few users have talked about their desire for greater pricing transparency and more consistent quality in accommodations.

Additionally, some travelers encountered hiccups with last-minute itinerary changes, which means even the experts can continue to learn about better communication and planning!

Avoid Exoticca Egypt from Bristol

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!!! 'Exoticca is not proper travel agent'. ALL external Flights were changed, multiple times and with huge delays, waiting in between, and cancellations. Exoticca were of no assistance, they just refer you to talk to the airline personally. I do not need a travel agent for this I could have just booked better flights myself. Changes made less than 12 hrs before departure from the UK. The flights advertised on their site do not represent the reality. 16 hrs to get from Bristol to Cairo (normally a four-hr flight) with two stops (one advertised), Cairo to Bristol 20hrs (two stops) and lost luggage as a result. I would not recommend as you are stressed when you arrive and stressed when you get home. Combined with very early starts from 3am to 5am every day. The three days onboard 'cruise' is one day cruising, two days accommodation on the boat which is docked and joined to two to four other boats, which you walk through to get on land!!! Food onboard is positively average. Only one of the advertised hotels were superior, the others were remote (taxi to any shops or restaurants) and distinctly average. Too much talking and restrictions from the guide, who was extremely knowledgeable, but did not take into consideration the guests need. No attempt to get to know our names, even though we were with him for 7 days. We were treated like high school students. Very slow and longwinded allocating rooms at destinations too. Meet and greet and collection from Cairo airport was exceptional from Planet tours.

Other issues with Exotica

Two times for our excursions we asked for a wake up call but did not get one. Luckily friends we met came and got us up or we would have missed our excursions. The 4 of us were considering another trip with Exotica but are reconsidering this idea.

Date of experience : February 02, 2024

Cheap for a reason

Terrible company - I know that this is a misspelt version of their company name which is in fact Exoticca but it felt I'd put a review here as well as on their proper site just to ensure that the message gets through. They are cheap because they arre prepared to lie to you and to risk your health and safety. Just returned from a three week trip to Madagascar with them and never want to hear their name again. They lied about journey times; provided no relief driver for trips of up to 13 hours on a non-air conditioned coach; offered no meal stops, and misdescribed excursions putting people's health and safety at risk and leading to one lady breaking her ankle. They have no interest in helping or responding to complaints. We have submitted a complaint to ABTA about them as they were unwilling to engage with us in a meaningful manner. Please save your money and find a reputable tour company. I have posted a fuller review under Exoticca on this site

Hotel Changes and No Communication

Used this company for a holiday to Jordan. Ground operator was Beyond Jordan. Booked 4 hotels within the package. Two were changed on the day of travel with sub-standard hotels. Wrote to Exotica about this and they failed to reply to any emails. Appalling and will not use Exotica again. Beware, you do not get the accommodation you pay for.

Good Tour guide

Booking the trip was easy. But contacting them via email/text/ WhatsApp is not there. No one responds to your email Our flight got canceled and no one from Exotica contacted us and we found out when we tried to check in. Getting them rebook was not easy. If your flight gets cancelled last minute you are at their mercy because they are your travel agent. I fought with Airlines to get a flight otherwise my trip would have been a washout. Planet tours was the local operator for Exotica. The trip itinerary was entirely up to guides discretion. Mina(male) our guide was terrible. It was just a job for him and didn’t care for anyone and he is very unprofessional. Didn’t give us proper time at any of the sites. Either it's 30 or 60 minutes. he didn’t have problem waiting as long as you wanted when they take us to these shopping trips. Egypt: Giza Pyramid 30min Make sure you ask for a good tour guide Your total experience of the trip depends on them. Ask for emergency contact numbers.

They lie about standards and refuse to communicate.

Booked a Costa Rica trip for our Honeymoon this August. They use photos of amazing luxury hotels to lure you in, however once you've paid, for some parts of the trip, they have booked into lower quality hotels that they don't even show on their website. When contacted about why this was and could they please change the reservation to the advertised hotel, (as there are rooms available at advertised hotel) they refuse to explain why or engage in any conversation. A black cloud hanging over our special once in a life time trip.

We are meant to be going to Peru on Wednesday. Despite repeated attempts to call and email, we have not had any confirmation of whether trip is cancelled or going ahead as planned. Although it is obvious that the itinerary is not possible in the current climate, and the only option is to cancel/reschedule. A dedicated team are meant to be calling peru travellers...assuming they call tomorrow....that will be leaving us with less than 48 hours notice. Extremely stressful situation.

Just came back from Greece and very disapointed …

Just came back from Greece and very disapointed; we took an upgrade for 4* hotels and got decent ones in Athens but when we got to the islands (Mykonos and Santorini) it was terrible. Chain in Anamar. Mold and wet floors in the bathrooms, very poor quality sheets and towels; I had a reash all over the body. Location was far from any town and we had to hire cabs or take buses that come every 30 mins. No beverages in the room, terrible breakfast and no breakfast box when pick-up was 3am. Staff were embarassed and tried to accommodate. Guides were young and inexperienced; poor knowledge of history, Never again with Exotica.

EXOTICCA NOT Exotica see reviews with correct company name

All of these reviews are using the wrong spelling🤔 You need to re write to be seen by Exoticca or their clients. Our trip was organised well to Jordan. Only issue local company Jordan & Beyond refused to open toilet door on coach travel. Caused unnecessary upset for fellow travellers with medical issues or pregnant :( I have written a full review under correct company name

The worst trip of my life

The worst trip of my life . We went to Greece 3 island hop and Athens tour . The most un organized “traveling” with problems on every corner. All hotels are not as described on exotica . We booked 5 star hotels and received 2 star hotels . Blood stains in sheets , oily breakfast. There’s a book I could write about everything but it’ll upset me too much. I hate this company my vacation was the biggest waste of money I’ve ever spent . Save yourself DO NOT book WITH EXOTICCA . Do not trust good reviews . Your better off planning your own trip. The Greeks are super rude the rudest people I’ve ever met in my life , not willing to solve any problems .

South Africa

Holiday in S.Africa more than met our expectations. All travel went smoothly and on time. Hotels all good especially La Lechere where meals were 'Cordon Bleu' and accomodation spacious. Would not hesitate to book with Exotica again so thank you for a great holiday, June & Anne.

Update on my original review as there…

Update on my original review as there were some really positive things about the trip to Romania. If you want to see Romania before it becomes like all the other Eastern EU countries then do this while you have the chance. Stunning scenery, villages that have changed little since the 1800's, authentic food and customs made it one to remember. Exotica rep was very knowledgable and we even got to sit in the same seats that members of parliament sit in. Be prepared to travel long distances but each region has its unique character. We have booked again with them for their Russia trip to Moscow and St.Petersburg...

Ligia is a rock star

Ligia is a rock star. My initial review was three stars because I couldn't reach a person with questions that I had and I didn't want to loose my booking. Ligia called me and got my reservation back on track. She walked through everything and was on point. Super helpful and a pleasure to work with. Excellent customer service. Because I don't often leave reviews I didn't see where to update my rating, but if I run across it I will.

trip to Greece-ATHENS,MYKONOS,SANTORINI

This trip is the worst i've ever taken;despite it being the most expensive. The hotel in Athens was in a ghetto surrounded by homeless people, broken sidewalks, empty buildings and graffiti. The trip itinerary changed as soon as we arrived and we changed hotels throughout our stay without luggage transfer service. We had to take our luggage up and down a steep steel ramp x2 for the ferries -being herded like cattle. The main chauvinistic male person in charge was rude and offended myself and roomates. He should be re-educated on how to speak to and treat your clients respectively! Most times,a representative would show up,tell you where to stand and then leave. Definetely not a guided tour with a lead tour companion. One of the island hotels was beautiful;but you needed to be a mountain goat to climb up and down to the room. Overall the trip ended on a good note in Santorini. The hotel was very rural but the owner made up for this by being welcoming, accommadating and even cooking us a dinner with wine on the house! The bus tour in Santorini was 12 hours long, but we saw the whole island, the guide was excellent and it was worth it! We had to have the hotel desk clerk coordinate with the travel company and travel coordinator for pick up,as we were told we weren't scheduled for pick up and return for this tour, adding to our frustration the evening prior. We also enjoyed the ancient ruins in Thera, Santorini and the local guide was very good. Sadly, this will be our last trip with Exoticca...

Just returned home from our first 14…

Just returned home from our first 14 day Exoticca trip to Portugual. The trip was wonderful. Our guide Andre Seco was very knowledgeable and personable. We really enjoyed our time with him. A large group went out with him and his sweet girlfriend the last evening to celebrate and say goodbye. He always went above and beyond giving us treats and spending extra time answering our questions. I would definitely recommend his tour and him! Only suggestion is to have 2 , not 3 hotel pick ups before the tour starts each day. That took up too much time. There were a few people on the trip that were complaining divas. They should book their own tours by themselves. The group had a wonderful time and established many new friendships. Andre was Superb! Sue Camp US-EX2023142470

Prompt response and delivery

This 3rd order with Exotica. So pleased with their service. One of the order had item missing that they refunded promptly.

Exotica is the Worst CompanyThe first and the last time I will book…

The first and the last time I will book anything through this company. I am in Jordan now and having purchased at an additional cost a luxury package, I am simply lost for words. They have put us in Crown plaza and upon our arrival very early hours of the morning we were checked into a room which basically had not been cleaned, dusty, no slippers or robe for the second person, no toiletry tray. Old and tired hotel. The breakfast was worse than you would get in any 3 star hotel but to top it all for our half board dinner we were directed to what looked like a canteen with round tables seating 10 people and expected to walk to another room where they had put together what looked like a cheap buffet you would expect in a pub. We were given water and could not order any other drink let alone wine. When eventually we found a bar we were told they only have one brand of wine which was terrible. I then ordered a cocktail which when it arrived looked nothing like an espresso martini and when I complained I was told that is how they make it. Basically I have paid £700 extra for a luxury package and have received the equivalent of 3 star. Please be aware before booking with them. The local company administering the holiday on ground are doing their best but the extra money for the luxury package does not go to them it goes to exotica. Having travelled all over the world over the last 40 years I can honestly say this is the worst package I have experienced. I only hope the rest of the holiday will not prove to be the same.

Cultural highlights of Turkey…

We have just returned from an 11 night cultural holiday in Turkey. We had an amazing time. Our guide, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. We were a big group of 49 from diverse backgrounds. Some of our fellow passengers were extremely difficult and entitled. Our guide dealt with them in a courteous and professional manner. Overall the holiday was as described and we saw many of Turkey's highlights. The hotels were all of a high standard and our coach was clean and comfortable. Our only criticism was we felt the organised lunches were excessive with few alternatives

Brilliant trip to China

Brilliant trip to China. The guides were amazing and nothing was too much trouble for them. They were very knowledgeable and made the trip interesting and fun. The hotels were beautiful and when we had a problem of our domestic flight getting cancelled Exoticca was able to sort out an alternative flight for us. The price was amazing as I’m a single traveller and usually have to pay nearly double with other companies. Can’t wait to book another holiday with them.

Very memorable experiences packed into this trip!…

We had a wonderful trip to the Emerald Isle. The guides and driver were exceptional and a pretty good mix of guided and independent activities. Price was very reasonable for what we got. Hotels were very nice, better than what we expected for the price. Get ready to do a ton of walking and prepare appropriately. I look forward to more tours through this company!

The Netherlands & Belgium

Our trip to Holland & Belgium was quite enjoyable even though the weather didn’t always cooperate. The hotels were all very nice. The breakfast at the Novotel was exceptional. Mika our rep was always eager to help. The guides were very good, however, I wish we could have had radios with headsets so we could have heard them at all times. The buses were quite comfortable. The tours were well planned. My favourite part of the trip was our visit to Keukenhof Gardens. The tulips were spectacular! Luckily, it was sunny & warm that day.

Do NOT use this company!!!

Do NOT use this company!!!! Non existent customer service- each person supposedly there to help passes it off to someone else. HORRIBLE experience in Brazil & Argentina!!! They are beyond the worst thing out there and turned our vacation into a complete nightmare! If I could give them less than one star I totally would! No one to help; leave you alone with no idea what to do; won’t answer phone calls; descriptions of activities and hotels are completely incorrect; in country flights they put you on are red eye and you don’t know about it until the day before you leave (making it next to impossible to re-book);these are just a few of the worst things …. I’ve never been so frustrated in my life. I met 2 others on vacation here who said the same thing about this horrendous company.

Exceptional China

This is our 6th booking with Exoticca and the trip was exceptional. The booking process is easy. The arrangements were everything that was advertised. The guides that the in-country provider (Nimbus) provided were really good. The itinerary covers what will be provided but each of the local guides have significant latitude to adjust the schedule. That makes booking anything with a 3rd party provider difficult but we did on this trip as we had lots of free time or we wanted to bypass shopping or the Jade and Silk factory tours. We did several Buddhist temples and an extended water town tour at a very reasonable price. Overall, this was an incredible trip and we got to see 360 degrees of China.

Exotica exceeded all our expectations…

Exotica exceeded all our expectations of a tour company as we usually create our own itineraries by ourselves, it was our first ever organised tour. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable helpful and were able to cater for every need, and were happy to make alternative arrangements if the group wanted to do something else. The flight with AirChina were not so great, but this was out of exotic as control. Some of the hotels were a bit too far out of town and a couple of the buses for the excursions were a bit small and it was a bit cramped. but all in all a very very good experience, I would recommend exotica to anyone.

I loved how the trip is well organized and there was always an assigned person to meet and greet us. Its very reassuring whenever someone is there to meet, orient and give a rundown on plans for the day. The hotels were awesome and great location. Tour guides were amazing, candid and fun!

The guide - Mr. Filali Abdelali

The guide, Mr. Filali Abdelali, was excellent and he went beyond the call of his duty to make this trip extra special for us. The itinerary was great and everyday was better than the previous day. Over all the whole trip went off like clockwork and definitely exceeded our expectations.

Amazing 7day Norway tour with exoticca

Amazing 7day Norway tour with exoticca. Everything for us was perfect! Well organised tour. Our tour guide Sergio was brilliant! Very informative tour and lots of places to see. Tomas our driver was excellent too! We feel safe with his driving and help us load and unload our luggages. It's our first time to join a grouo tour and we have an amazing experienced. It's exceeded our expectations. All 33 of us in the group blended really well considering we all just met there and we all came from different countries. Hotel locations were perfect! Downside was the daily unpacking of our luggages but it did not affect our 5 star rating with the tour. Some guided tour will require 30-45mins of walking and some areas are uphill. Please wear comfy shoes. Overall, we highly recommend the tour.

South Africa Bucket List Trip

Another amazing destination from Exoticca! Doing this trip on our own would’ve been very difficult, glad they had it all sorted out and handpicked for us. Loved all the adventures, the big five safari, worlds largest green canyon, one of world’s 7natural wonder, and exploring cape town. It ended up being a bucket list trip that we did not expect! We signed up for some optional excursions, which we highly recommend to get the most out of your trip. Thanks again Exoticca!

"Treasures of Anatolia - Turkey"

The hotel choices in Istanbul is very far and inconvenient for us tourists to visit the city centre. The taxi fare from this hotel to city centre (Istanbul) is very expensive. And if you take the public transport, it would take 1.5hrs - 2hrs just to get back to the hotel from the city centre. Exoticca contracted a travel company from Turkey, Euroriente, which basically runs this trip. There were no restaurants choices for our lunch stops. They always brought us to a "contracted restaurant" by Euroriente which provides no other choices for our lunch/meals. Most of the time, me and my wife don't eat lunch as there were no other option to choose from. The optional excursions offered by Exoticca/Euroriente are very expensive compared to the on-line prices from Get your Guide. For this reason, I booked my optional excursion/activities with Get your Guide. I'm not going to recommend the " Treasures of Anatolia - Turkey" offered by Exoticca even though the itinerary or places to go to were good.

Well done Exoticca - magical trip

The trip was well organised and the service received before our travel was excellent. The person who met us at the airport gave us all the information in an orderly manner. The hotels and locations were great. Close to sites, transport, restaurants, etc.

South Africa and Zimbabwe

I just returned from a trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe and I loved every minute of it. The guides were really friendly and knowledgeable, the group wasn't too big (there were 24 of us) and a variety of extra activities to suit everyone. The air transfer service was great

The air transfer service was great . The warm welcome from the local touring company has made a difference. The experienced and knowledgeable driver Humphrey was amazing. He was always punctual and engaging with very positive attitude. He was very friendly and accommodating. He was also excited to see the wild animals like the tourists, his attitude brought cheers for everyone. We were lucky to see the Big Five despite of the rain season. We felt very safe and well looked after at all times. Many thanks to Humphrey and Vera, you guys have done an amazing job!

Third trip with Exoticca and what another amazing time we had…

Third trip with Exoticca and our trip to Argentina did not disappoint. Great structure, Attentive tour operators, seamless collection and transfer to hotels. Good info via Exoticca app and messages inbetween from tour operators. No pressure sales just support from people who were focused on ensuring you had a good time. Booked additional trips easily. Pace was fast as expected, travelling around great distances from amazing glaciars to rainforests and waterfalls with a great city in-between. Air travel was well organised and efficient ( be aware that there can be delays in departure times but this did not affect any connecton we had. Argentina dispelled myths and any fears with people who were friendly, helpful and appreciated the effort you made to fit in with their world. I wouldn't hesitate to return!

Excellent trip to Egypt with Exoticca

Excellent trip to Egypt with Exoticca, including all the excursions and the 3 nights on a nile river boat. Everything ran smoothly and we saw all of the sights. Only points to mention are that as part of the sight seeing experience, you will also get several retail opportunities but you can avoid spending if you don't want to. Guide was superb, very knowledgeable and amusing, which really made the trip. It's all run by local operators, mainly Planet Tours and they were great. No issues with security and we always felt safe. Hotels were all good when we weren't on the boat, as was the boat. As of 2024, take plenty of $1 and $5 notes, and/or change 500 EGP notes into 50s and 100s

Best of Greece and Turkey with 3-day Cruise

We recently went on the Greece and Turkey tour and it exceeded all of our expectations! The itinerary was perfectly planned with a great balance of sightseeing and free time. Our tour guides, Maria in Greece and Mustafa in Turkey, were incredibly knowledgeable and made the history of each location come to life. The hotels were all comfortable and conveniently located, and the Cave Hotel upgrade in Cappadocia was a highlight of the trip. The food was amazing - I particularly loved the vegetarian options in Turkey. Eskapas was always accessible and communicative, making the trip stress-free and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in exploring these beautiful countries!

Really enjoyed the trip! Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Everything was very well put together and coordinated. I think the only thing that would’ve been nice is knowing ahead of time that some of the location specific people preferred speaking Spanish (wouldve practiced more before I went). And receiving some of the transportation information more ahead of time (pickup times etc) Other than that everything was great!

Turkish Breeze & 4 Nights Iconic Aegeans - 14 Days

This tour was contracted to smaller day tours. The overall tour company was very responsive and set daily updates for where to meet and when and all transportation was covered. Accommodation was great, although it would have been nice to stay in the old town walls of Antalya. The cruise, while highly organised, was probably a bit too big and very rushed. All your guides had impeccable knowledge of their field and were very friendly. Sometimes the daily itinerary didn’t quite match up to the order listed but all sights were still seen. There were some extra ticket costs not mentioned in the itinerary - usually a few extra hundred lira. Some excursions also had visits to trade centers - carpets, jewelers, leather works, ceramics - and while interesting there often felt pressure to buy.

What people love about Greece And Turkey Tours

I would rate 4 out 5 my overall experience, had a great time overall.
Overall the tour was great!. The transportation through out the tour was excellent. Pick up and drop off was always on time. Turkey trip would have been much better with a different guide. Our guide (OZ) was seemed disinterested through out the whole process. We had to google everything. Hotels in Turkey were good except cave hotel in Cappadocia (Not worth the upgrade). We were put in a room across the street from main hotel. The door to the room was covered in vomit. We told the reception and expected it to be cleaned but when we came back in evening it was still there. Very disappointing and disgusting since we paid extra for this hotel. Also the hotels that we had in Turkey and Greece were further away from the city center and required lots of walking or some kind of transportation. Some areas were not safe to walk at night. The hotels should be close city center. Greece over all was good but we should have been given an option to take flight from island to island because we wasted almost 2 days in Ferry. Our Liaison Jenny in Mykonos was very organized and gave us options and advise. While that was not the case in Samos and Santorini.
Turkey is a fabulous country with wonderful and friendly people. The Tour company did an outstanding job of coordination and communication. The Turkey tour with the cruise of the Greek islands was quite pleasant. However, I would strongly recommend NOT going to Santorini. We arrived rather late and it was dark. Then we got off the bus and were herded up a narrow path into the village. It was embarrassing to be a part of the crowd. Had I known this, I would have stayed on the ship to relax.

Hi, Angela. We hope to see you again soon! Kind regards, Exoticca

Hello, Michelle. Thank you for your review. We are deeply sorry about the inconvenience caused. Please, can you update your review with your booking ID and some contact information so we can look into your reservation? Kind regards, Exoticca

Hi, Bill B. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us feedback. We hope to see you again soon! Kind regards, Exoticca

I loved how the trip is well organized…

I loved how the trip is well organized and there was always an assigned person to meet and greet us. Its very reassuring whenever someone is there to meet, orient and give a rundown on plans for the day. The hotels were awesome and great location. Tour guides were amazing, candid and fun!

Hi, Joann. We’re glad that you enjoyed your extraordinary Exoticca travel experience! Kind regards, Exoticca

Hello Ivy, Wow! We are blown away by your review. Thank you for choosing Exoticca. We can’t wait to have you back and create more wonderful memories together. Kind regards Exoticca

Hi RichK, We truly appreciate your continuous support and trust in us. Your 5-star review brightens our day and serves as a constant reminder of why we love what we do. Kind regards, Exoticca

Hello Ramren, We are sorry that your experience at didn’t quite match your expectations. We would love to get more information and we will arrange an agent to contact you to get more information. Kind regards Exoticca

Well done Exoticca - magical trip

The trip was well organised and the service received before our travel was excellent. The person who met us at the airport gave us all the information in an orderly manner. The hotels and locations were great. Close to sites, transport, restaurants, etc.

Hello Angelo, We’re humbled by your support and look forward to being your preferred choice for extraordinary travel experiences in the future. Kind regards Exoticca

South Africa and Zimbabwe

I just returned from a trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe and I loved every minute of it. The guides were really friendly and knowledgeable, the group wasn't too big (there were 24 of us) and a variety of extra activities to suit everyone. I would definitely recommend it and based on this experience I would probably book another trip with Exoticca

Date of experience : February 19, 2024

Hi Cooper, Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are thrilled to hear that you had a great time on your trip to Egypt with us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Regards, Exoticca

PORTUGAL is one of a good history to look back and to learn.

Knowing about Portugal its history, culture, food and people made my travel experience awesome. From the price, hotels, tour guide, drivers are also great.

10 things I wish tourists knew before visiting Greece, from a local

  • I'm from Athens, and I've seen plenty of tourists make mistakes while traveling to Greece .
  • Pace yourself if you're planning on staying out at the bars and clubs all night.
  • It's worth it to do some research on smaller islands and local cuisine before your trip.

Insider Today

Thanks to its ancient ruins, picturesque beaches, and incredible food, Greece is one of the top tourist destinations. In 2023, over 32 million people visited.

I was born in Athens and currently split my years living between the US and Greece , so I've spent plenty of time in the beautiful European country.

Here are 10 things I think tourists should know before visiting.

There’s so much more to see in Greece than the popular islands.

exotica greece tours

It seems like everyone visits Mykonos, Santorini, and maybe Paros, but Greece has over 220 inhabitable islands. Plus, most of them are more budget-friendly than the popular spots.

I recommend looking into places like Kimolos, Astypalaia, Paxoi (also known as Paxos and Paxi), or Folegandros.

The Greek mainland is also beautiful. There's a lot to see there, from UNESCO sites at Delphi and Meteora and the turquoise waters of the Peloponnese to the stunning mountains and villages of Epirus.

Athens is more than the Acropolis.

exotica greece tours

Athens has great nightlife , restaurants, museums, and cool neighborhoods like Plaka, Exarcheia, Psyrri, and Pangrati.

Tourists who just swing by to check the Acropolis off their list are missing out. I've always found it to be one of the liveliest cities in the world.

You don’t need to tip 20%.

exotica greece tours

Greek servers generally rely on hourly wages, so there isn't the same tipping culture as the US .

I normally just round up the bill or leave a couple of Euros on the table as a tip — unless I had exceptional service or dined at a more formal (and tourist-oriented) restaurant.

Pace yourself when drinking alcohol.

exotica greece tours

A lot of travelers take advantage of Greece's lax attitude toward alcohol restrictions. Coupled with the fact that Greek bars and clubs close pretty late (like 4 a.m. late), some tourists get sloppy.

Locals usually intersperse drinks with food and water so they can last the whole night, and I recommend tourists do the same.

Slow down and take Sundays off.

exotica greece tours

Greeks have a pretty relaxed relationship with time — people often arrive late and stores may open half an hour after they said they would.

Service in Greece can seem slow to people from more fast-paced places, especially on the quieter islands . A lot of stores and supermarkets are also closed on Sundays, even in Athens.

I know this can be annoying at times, but I recommend just enjoying the slower pace of life.

Don’t try to visit too many islands on one trip.

exotica greece tours

So many people ask me if they can fit four or five islands into a seven-day trip, and I never recommend it. Take your time and enjoy each destination for at least a couple of days.

Half the joy of the Greek islands is getting to destress. If you're hopping from ferry to ferry and running around to cover the highlights, you'll miss out on the best parts of the country.

Be sensitive about natural disasters.

exotica greece tours

I never thought I'd have to say this, but I have seen multiple tourists in the last few years posting about how "pretty" the skies or sunsets are thanks to the glow from raging wildfires .

At a time when a lot of Greek people are wondering if their houses are still standing or their loved ones have gotten to safety, it's a pretty insensitive thing to do.

Don't skip out on experiencing a traditional taverna.

exotica greece tours

Athens and other popular Greek destinations now have a lot of upscale restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. But make sure to eat in a traditional taverna at least once.

A taverna is a casual restaurant with family-style dining. Diners can spend hours in them chatting with friends while sharing food paired with some great wine or ouzo (a Greek aperitif).

Greek food is more than just gyros.

exotica greece tours

Well-known dishes like gyros and souvlaki are truly delicious, but Greek cuisine is so much more than that.

For example, a lot of Greeks start their day with a tiropita (cheese pie) and freddo coffee. Each region also has local specialties that I recommend inquiring about.

In tavernas, popular menu items include calamari, octopus, all kinds of fish, grilled and fried cheeses (like saganaki and halloumi), and side dishes like fava.

Learn a few local words.

exotica greece tours

Most younger Greek people understand English, but you may run into problems communicating with older people — especially in more rural areas.

Even if a local person can understand you, I think it's nice to learn a few simple words and phrases like "good morning," "thank you," and "how are you?"

It's nice when tourists make a little bit of an effort.

Exoticca Tours Hotels: What to Expect

Kim Orlando Avatar

exoticca tours hotel - Mercure Hotel view

What sort of hotel can you expect on a bargain-priced international trip? As SheBuysTravel Founder, I felt it was my duty to know.  I paid $1,600 for an 11-day Exoticca tour of Ecuador and the Galapagos. Read on to learn about the quality of hotels included in that super affordable price and what my traveling partners, both luxe travelers, thought of the hotels on the Exoticca Tour to Ecuador.

I am never 100% sure what a three- and four-star hotel rating means outside of the United States. So I did not know what to make of the “Charm” (cheapest) and “Superior” (upgraded) ratings Exoticca Tours attached to its hotel selections. Before booking, I researched the hotels separately from the Exoticca website and found most had a four-star rating. I would equate that to a DoubleTree or Hilton .

My traveling companion, a luxury traveler, was disappointed in our first night at the Mercure Hotel in Quito. The room was basic – a small plain room with two beds. But we were both pleased with the rest of the accommodations that followed. And we found something to love about the Mercure: an impressive spa experience.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Note that Exoticca reserves the right to change hotels at any time. So even if you choose a certain hotel, you may end up sleeping somewhere else.

exoticca tours hotel - spa at the Mercure Hotel

Exoticca Tours Hotel in Ecuador

Mercure alameda hotel in quito, ecuador.

Our first hotel was the Mercure in Quito . We stayed here for one night at the beginning and again for two nights in the middle of our trip. I would equate it to a Holiday Inn Express – the regular rooms are small, but clean and comfortable. On our second visit, we were assigned a suite which we liked much better. It had a separate living room and more space in general.

Buffet breakfast is included and the options include local favorites (plantains, local fruits) and a selection of breads and an espresso coffee machine.

Impressive Spa at the Mercure Hotel in Quito.

There is one big exception to the Holiday Inn Express-like atmosphere: a gorgeous spa. And not just any spa, but a pristine penthouse spa with views of the city. Located through the gym, the spa offers a huge sauna and steam room, thermal showers, treatment rooms with showers, plunge pool, jacuzzi pool and locker room

The odd thing was that no one mentioned it when we checked-in. Tina and I found it by accident. And what a find! I had the best massage of my life – a 45-minute exfoliating massage with a salt/sugar scrub, followed by a shower, then a delicious 45-minute Swedish massage. The whole 90+ minute experience cost just $60. My masseuse was professional and attentive. Afterwards, I was invited to take a cold plunge, a steam or a Jacuzzi.

exoticca tours hotel - Suchipakari Lodge

Suchipakari Lodge in the Amazon Jungle

The next morning, we boarded our comfortable coach bus after breakfast and began our 5-hour journey to Suchipakari Lodge in the Amazon jungle. The attendants at Suchipakari Lodge met us with wheelbarrows to take our luggage to our rooms. The Lodge is beautiful. It reminded me of Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disney World with its thatched roof bar and restaurant al fresco.

The rooms are large and comfortable, with modern bathrooms and a balcony facing the jungle. There is no air conditioning, but fans are available upon request. All meals were included and they were terrific.  We ate fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. The Exoticca tour guide held an impromptu fruit tasting and most of us opted in to tube down the nearby river.

exoticca tours hotel - Hotel Blue Marlin

Blue Marlin, Galapagos Hotel

On the island of San Cristobal, we stayed for three nights at the Blue Marlin , which is owned by a former Ecuador football star and 2023 political candidate. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable and the location is two blocks from the water and the main boardwalk.

We didn’t have time to use the pool or the hot tub, but we did enjoy a plated Ecuadorian breakfast each morning. It is right in the heart of everything; I would definitely stay here again .

exoticca tours hotel- UniPark

Unipark Hotel in Guayaquil

We spent 2 nights at the Unipark Hotel in the center of Guayaquil, a modern city on the coast of Ecuador and the country’s largest port city. Across the street from the hotel is Parque Seminario, a park known for its large iguana population. There are lots of stores and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

The hotel room reminded me of a Doubletree. The breakfast that was included was decadent with a multitude of options such as yogurt parfaits, petit quiches, green juices, a variety of breads and eggs.

Birding, snorkeling, hiking are just a few of the activities that we did in Ecuador and the Galapagos. Here’s more info on the excursions that were included in the tour and some that we paid extra for .

Trips to Portugal from the USA

Our Portugal tours from the US introduce you to this incredible country on the far side of the Atlantic. Its position on the coast has influenced its culture, food, and history as one of the major seafaring powers .

This southwestern European nation located mainly on the Iberian peninsula has much to offer. It shares a border with Spain to the north and east, with the rest of the country exposed to the Atlantic Ocean.

The stunning capital city is vibrant Lisbon, regularly rated among the most beautiful in the world . Pretty Porto has six impressive bridges, while the northern coast is rocky and often cold.

The sparsely inhabited, mountainous interior is wild, adding to the country’s remarkable scenic diversity. The famed southern Algarve region presents pristine beaches with iconic limestone grottos and formations. They provide captivating views and backdrops for your holiday snaps.

Top points of interest in Portugal

Our Portugal vacation packages include several extraordinary sights. At Exoticca, we understand that a  seamless blend of planned activities and free time results in memorable vacations.

Make the most of the free days to immerse in the local culture for memories that last a lifetime. We assess a few famous and captivating spots in this diverse country.

The coastal capital, epic Lisbon is a great place to kick off one of our Portugal tours. It’s known for its colonialist history, ornate architecture, romantic fado music, pleasant year-round weather , and spectacular vistas.

This rich and varied tourist destination has a historic old center with cobbled streets, steep inclines, and gorgeous views. The unique atmosphere and mix of Roman and Moorish influences provide the backdrop for the various districts.

With a population just over half a million, it’s comparatively small, retaining much of its old world charm . Called the “city of seven hills,” you can visit the prominent and ancient St George’s Castle, Jeronimos Monastery, and the fabled Belem Tower.

Lisbon also offers several museums showcasing the city’s legendary history, art, culture, and music. The city also boasts the largest indoor aquarium on the continent , with over 450 species, mostly in a large central tank.

The Azores are a volcanic archipelago of nine islands in the mid-Atlantic ocean, nearly 900 miles west of Lisbon. Fishing villages punctuate the dramatic landscape while cows chew the cud in green meadows. Most islands have impossibly blue caldera lakes.

Sporadic development means a diverse population and variable culture . The islands offer many hiking trails around volcanoes, canyoning, and hot springs to soothe tired muscles. Ponto do Pico is the tallest mountain in the country, and ensures you don’t miss the superb wine.

The archipelago is one of the best places to spot a wide range of whales and dolphins . A brief three-hour trip promises sightings of several leviathan species. You could even spot blue whales, the largest animal on earth.

The Algarve is Portugal’s most southerly region, known for its sandy Atlantic beaches and whitewashed fishing villages . It’s a 125-mile (201 km) stretch of beach with several towns with bouncing nightlife. There’s a significant expat scene, and many locals speak English.

Visit the epic Benagil sea caves and match your excursion with a dolphin-watching trip. Take a kayak or SUP tour if you’re feeling energetic. You could also spend an afternoon on an old pirate ship, cruising the coast and walking the plank.

Visit the Zoomarine Amusement park and aquarium, clamber around rock formations, and chill on the beach. Explore the Ria Formosa lagoon by boat, kayak, or via hiking trails. Many tourists focus their Portugal tours on the extraordinary Algarve.

This autonomous region is an archipelago of four islands in the north Atlantic ocean . It’s 320 miles (515 km) west of the Moroccan coast and about 250 miles (402 km) north of the Canary islands.

Known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” the main island is volcanic, lush, and fertile, with a rugged interior, seaside cliffs, and pebble beaches. The capital Funchal boasts botanical gardens, a harbor, wine farms, and cellars . It’s also the birthplace of soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo!

The São Tiago Fortress, built in the 17th century, now hosts the contemporary art museum. Don’t miss the Funchal Cathedral , one of the few remaining structures from the early years of colonization, completed in the late 1500s.

Famed for its wine and sub-tropical climate, the inland landscape features soaring peaks and insta-friendly observation decks.

Many begin their Portugal tours in the bustling second city in the north. Porto is smaller and more compact than the capital, with half the population.

The Sao Bento Train Station is one of the most beautiful in the world, displaying stunning tiles that tell the story of the country’s history, royalty, and wars .

Many tourists opt for a Douro river cruise to understand the layout of Portugal’s second-largest city. The Clerigos Church bell tower is one of the most iconic sights in the city. Views from the top are breathtaking .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Portugal?

Peak season is June to August, but tourists can laze on the beach from April until September. The country is a long way south, so it has hot, dry summers while spring and fall are warm. Winter is cold and rainy but also produces awe-inspiring waves at terrifying Nazaré.

How many days do you need in Portugal?

Any trip to the country should be at least one week long to get an idea of the culture and traditions. While it’s a comparatively small country, it’s jam-packed with things to do, so we recommend longer if you have the time.

What is the best way to see Portugal?

Some think car rentals give you more freedom, while others point to public transport. In the cities, the metro or rapid transit is your best option. You can use buses and trains in the countryside, but the options may be limited.

Where should I go for my first time in Portugal?

While it depends on your personal preferences, most appreciate the fantastic capital Lisbon and the second city Porto. If you're looking for beaches, you can’t go wrong with the famed Algarve or the stunning Azores. Research the country in advance to make sure you don’t miss anything.

What is the biggest attraction in Portugal?

Saint George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) in Lisbon is the biggest attraction in the country, with more than two million annual visitors.

More information about Portugal

Located in southwestern  Europe  and home to a sweeping  Atlantic  coastline of more than  800 kilometers ,  Portugal  is a thrilling travel destination, whether you are planning a  city-break , a  sightseeing tour  or an  all-inclusive beach vacation.  Although it shares the  Iberian Peninsula  with  Spain ,  Portugal  has its own unique history and culture, which is sure to surprise and enchant anyone who takes a  trip to Portugal.

As well as the western part of the  Iberian Peninsula , the  Azores Archipelago  and the island of  Madeira  are also part of  Portugal , one of the oldest  European  nations. Boasting a diverse landscape, a  tour of Portugal  will take you from windswept  Atlantic  beaches to the verdant mountains of the north and the near-desert landscape of the  Alentejo  region. On a  vacation to Portuga l, you can go surfing, explore hilltop villages, soak up the nightlife in the cities or simply kick-back on the golden sand beaches of the  Algarve.

The historic capital of Lisbon is famed for its landmarks and vintage tram system, but other notable cities to discover on a  tour of Portugal  include ancient  Porto , the university city of  Coimbra , spiritual  Fatima,  coastal  Faro  and  Funcha l, which is the capital of  Madeira.  Portugal’s most famous beach destination is the Algarve, situated in the south of the country, with towns such as Lagos and Albufeira establishing themselves as some of the best-loved beach vacation destinations in Portugal.

Portuguese is the official language and  Portugal  is well-known for its fascinating cultural heritage and world-class gastronomy.  Portugal  is proud of its gastronomic heritage and any  trip to Portugal  is sure to be filled with mouth-watering delights, such as the creamy  Pastel de nata , velvety  Port wine  from the  Douro Valley  and some of the best seafood in the world, fresh from the  Atlantic Ocean . Needless to say, all foodies should travel to Portugal!

The home of the melancholic melodies of  Fado , iconic  azulejos  glazed tiles and festivals such as  Santo António,   São Pedro  and  São João ,  Portugal’s  rich cultural heritage is ever-present, whether you’re admiring the hand-embroidered skirts of  Nazare’s  fishermen or deciphering the stories painted onto the  azulejos  tiles of the breathtaking  Chapel of Souls  in  Porto.

History of Portugal

As one of the oldest nations in  Europe ,  Portugal  is a treasure trove of historic landmarks that tell the stories of the events, cultures and traditions that shaped this fascinating country. The territory of  Portugal  has been inhabited since prehistoric times, firstly by  Celtic  peoples, followed by  Ancient Greeks ,  Romans ,  Visigoths  and the  Moors.  As a result of the early Christian Reconquest,  Portugal  was first founded as a nation in the year  868.  The early history of this nation is still evident in a number of ancient sites such as the prehistoric rock art of the  Coa Valley , the medieval  Castle of Moors  in  Sintra  and the  Roman  architecture of  Evora .  Travelling to Portugal  is a journey through a diverse and eventful history.

Perhaps the most famous era in the country’s long heritage is between the  15th and 18th centuries , a period dubbed the  ‘Age of Discovery’ . During these centuries   Portugal  rose to prominence as a great maritime and commercial empire. After discovering the  Atlantic archipelagos  of the  Azores ,  Madeira  and  Cape Verde ,  Portuguese  explorers ventured as far afield as  Africa, Asia  and  South America,  colonising countries such as  Brazil  and sending missionaries as far afield as  China  and  Japan . In  1498  the great explorer  Vasco da Gama  became the first  European  to reach  India  by sea, a source of immense pride to the  Portuguese  people and marking the beginning of a very prosperous time in the nation’s history and the beginning of the  Portuguese Renaissance.

If you  visit Portugal  you’ll find many of the most elegant and opulent landmarks can be traced back to this period in the countries history. The  Belem Tower  in  Lisbon  is an ornate symbol of  Portugal’s  maritime prowess, once acting as the ceremonial gateway to the city during the height of  Portugal’s trading empire.  If you  visit Portugal  you’ll be able to trace the impact of this era in the grand squares, opulent palaces and historic trading ports found throughout the country.

A number of events contributed to the end of  Portugal’s  prosperous ‘ Age of Discovery ’ such as the devastating  Lisbon earthquake  of  1755 , the  Napoleonic Wars  and the independence of  Brazil  in the early  19th-century.  Revolution came to  Portugal  in  1910  when the monarchy was deposed and replaced by the democratic  Portuguese   First Republic . An authoritarian regime, known as the  Estado Novo  was later established in  1933  and endured until  1974  when democracy was finally restored after the  Carnation Revolution.  This was the end of  Portugal’s  colonial legacy as almost all the overseas territories were granted independence, ending one of the longest-lived empires in history.

Nature in Portugal

Portugal  has a  Mediterranean   climate , despite its location on the  Atlantic Ocean , and is one of the warmest countries in  Europe , with mild winters and long, hot summers. The  best time to visit Portugal  depends on your intentions, as the summer might be too hot for sightseeing but perfect for lounging on the idyllic beaches of the  Algarve  region. Of course, the further south you travel, the warmer and drier the weather will become.

Portugal  is awash with natural beauty, from the towering mountains of  Geres  to the verdant  Azores Islands  and the turquoise waters of the  Algarve,  boasting a rich and diverse array of landscapes. As a meeting point between the  Mediterranean  and the  Atlantic , it also boasts rich biodiversity, in both flora and fauna. Some of  Portugal’s  best-known species include the fearsome  Portuguese Man O’War  and the beautiful  Iberian Lynx.  Portugal also plays host to a large number of  migratory birds , found in abundance around the marshes of the  Algarve  and the  Douro River Valley.

If you  travel to Portugal  you’ll find plenty of areas of outstanding natural beauty if you venture from the usual cities and beach destinations. The  Serra da Estrela Natural Park  is one of the most spectacular, home to the  Serra da Estrela Mountain,  reaching  1,993 meters a bove sea level. It is also the only place in  Portugal  where you can go  skiing,  as in the winter months this immaculate landscape is blanketed in a thick covering of white snow, perfect for  winter sports  enthusiasts. This natural park is also excellent for trekking, horse-riding or mountain biking and has  375km of marked trails  to suit all levels.

The  Peneda-Geres National Park  is another highlight to include on a  trip to Portugal . The largest national park in the country, this haven of untouched wilderness is situated in  northern Portugal.  Here, walking and hiking trails lead you through forests, beside picturesque rivers, past waterfalls and up granite mountains.

Another must-see natural attraction to visit on a  tour of Portugal  is  Cabo de Sao Vincente,  the most southwesterly tip of  Europe.  This rocky peninsula boasts breathtaking views out into the depths of the  Atlantic Ocean  and evokes memories of the  Portuguese  maritime explorers of days gone by, who would have passed this landmark on their way to discover unknown lands.

Culture of Portugal

With centuries of history,  Portugal  has a distinct and colorful national culture. Some of the most characteristic cultural treasures to discover on a  vacation to Portugal  include the moving musical tradition of  Fado , born out of the old fishing songs of yesteryear, fortified  Port wine  and a number of delicate handicrafts such as embroidery and  bobbin lace.

Portugal  is a  Roman Catholic  country, and although religion is no longer at the forefront of society in  Portugal,  there are still countless annual festivals in honour of various saints and important religious events.  Pilgrimage  is also a long-standing part of  Portuguese  culture, with thousands making the devoted walk to the  Sanctuary Of Our Lady Of Fatima  every year. In fact, if you see walkers by the side of the road wearing yellow jackets, you can safely guess that they are on their way to the  holy city of Fatima , a place of supreme importance to followers of the  Catholic  faith, and a fascinating place to visit if you are  travelling to Portugal.

Portuguese  people are known for their warm hospitality towards visitors, so don’t be surprised if you are offered a drink within mere moments of meeting a new  Portuguese  friend! Having a busy social life is of great value in  Portuguese  culture and whether you’re spending an evening bar-hopping in  Lisbon  or enjoying a romantic meal at a beach-side taverna in the  Algarve,  you’ll always find groups of  Portuguese  families or friends, eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company late into the evening. In fact, it’s said that a night out in  Portugal  only ends when the sun comes up!

Port wine  has been produced in  Portugal  since the  17th-century  from grapes grown in the fertile  Douro Valley  before being transported upriver to the charming city of  Porto . Here, countless wine cellars keep the wine in barrels, where the ageing process takes at least two years. This is a proud part of  Portuguese  culture and all the port in the world is produced in Porto. You cannot  travel to Portugal  without sampling these delicious tipples, be it velvety port wine or refreshing  vihno verde , literally green wine, made from young grapes.

Just as important as  Portugal’s  wine-making heritage is the nation’s fierce love of  gastronomy.  A mouth-watering national cuisine,  Portuguese food  is some of the best in Europe. Whether you’re a fan of  sweet pastries  or prefer a fresh catch of  cod , a firm favorite on  Portuguese  menus,  Portugal  doesn’t disappoint with its culinary culture.  Portuguese  cuisine is simple, yet delicious and with such a bountiful ocean and fertile countryside, produce is almost always fresh and delicious.  Portuguese  gastronomy is sure to be the star attraction of the trip to  Portugal , especially if you consider yourself a foodie.

Travel to Portugal  to experience a vibrant country, filled with diverse sights and landscapes, the result of centuries of cultural heritage. On a  vacation to Portugal , you can kick-back on sunkissed beaches, explore rugged landscapes, sample some of the finest wines on earth or take in the sights of the major cities. There’s something for everyone to explore on a  package   tour of Portugal.
