The Best Ski Holidays Resorts for South Africans
Skiing is a beloved sport around the world, with many avid skiers hitting the slopes every winter. However, with limited skiing options in South Africa, many locals choose to travel abroad to enjoy the best ski holidays and to discover the best ski resorts on offer. We’ve answered a few of your most common questions around ski holidays from South Africa .
Where do South Africans go skiing?
South Africans typically travel to Europe or North America for their ski holidays. Popular destinations include France , Italy, Switzerland , Austria, Canada, and the United States. Club Med offers all-inclusive ski packages to several of these destinations, including France and Italy.
What month is best for a skiing holiday?
The best time for a skiing holiday depends on the destination. In Europe, the ski season typically runs from December to April, with January and February being the busiest months. In North America, the ski season can start as early as November and run through April. The best time to go skiing is usually in February and March when there is plenty of snow and longer days. Snowfall ranges during these months, but most resorts will complement their early or late snowfall with snowmakers to ensure a quality experience for all visitors.
Where is the best place to ski in the world?
The best place to ski in the world depends on individual preferences, but some of the most popular destinations include:
- Whistler Blackcomb, Canada: Known for its massive ski area and incredible off-piste skiing.
- Chamonix, France: Famous for its challenging runs and stunning views of Mont Blanc.

- Aspen Snowmass, United States: A top destination for luxury ski holidays with plenty of slopes for all levels.

However, a typical ski trip is around 7-10 days, with many skiers opting for a week-long trip. This allows for plenty of time on the slopes and the opportunity to explore the local area and enjoy après-ski activities.

Frank Ski joins Kiss 104.1 as morning host
Frank Ski, who left V-103 over the summer, returns to Atlanta radio on rival station R&B Kiss 104.1 hosting mornings.
He will start at Kiss on Feb. 1, 2021.
Toni Moore, who is currently hosting mornings on Kiss, will stay on staff, according to Chris Eagan, senior director of operations for the Cox Media Group’s Atlanta radio stations, including Kiss. He said Ski will be building his staff, and the rest of his team will be announced at a later date.
Ski declined to comment. He is still under a six-month non-compete agreement with Entercom, which owns V-103.
Kiss in recent months has let go several hosts including Art Terrell, Zooman, Twanda Black and Youngblood. The station has been doing well this year, ranking third in the ratings overall during the most recent monthly Nielsen book, with a 6.7 share, behind CMG stations news/talk WSB and rock station 97.1/The River. It also ranked third among women 25 to 54 behind V-103 and R&B station Majic 107.5/97.5.
Ski departed V-103 voluntarily over the summer and has spent the past few months working at the Washington D.C. R&B radio station WHUR-FM with his longtime producer Nina Brown.
After he starts with Kiss, he will continue to do his WHUR-FM afternoon show remotely from Atlanta.
Ski is a well-known entity in Atlanta. He joined V in 1998 from Baltimore and was the top-rated show in the city for most of that run with comic Wanda Smith. He left in 2012, seeking a syndication deal that never transpired. He worked a few years with WHUR-FM before returning to V-103 in a part-time capacity. When Ryan Cameron left in 2018, Ski was placed back in the morning slot.
His ratings remained strong and actually improved a bit after the pandemic began.
“Frank Ski is a proven leader and trusted voice in Atlanta’s African American community,” said Terri Avery, program director for Kiss.
Over the years, Ski has also been a club DJ and has written songs that have been sampled by major hip-hop artists. His 1993 song “Whores in This House” was sampled in Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s huge hit “WAP” this year.
V-103 has since replaced Ski with their former afternoon host Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan, who is now joined by two newcomers Tyler Does, known as Tylerchronicles, and Christina Granville.
Cox Media Group is majority-owned by Apollo Global Management, which purchased the radio and TV stations a year ago. Cox Enterprises maintains a minority stake in CMG.

Five tips for a successful skiing trip in South Africa
South Africa has very little comparisons with the Swiss Alps or Colorado in the United States of America (two iconic world destinations for skiing). The country doesn’t exactly pop onto snow enthusiast’s map as a destination to go skiing.
That said South Africa still has a small yet passionate skiing scene located in the various mountain areas of the country. SA only has one dedicated ski resort and another one just over the border in Lesotho – Afriski (a unique country located within the borders of South Africa). Many South Africans who wish to ski often have to do so at their own will, opting to find areas in the country for which to ski or snowboard uninhibited by civilization and ski lifts, having to either hike or take 4×4’s to remote areas in search of epic untouched powder. Here are five useful tips when planning a South African skiing adventure.
Get in shape
As aforementioned you may or may not have the option of ski lifts when on a South African skiing adventure, so be ready to do a lot of hiking through challenging terrain. If you really want to score that epic powder this might be the only way as many of the places where snow is found are also in remote areas.
Make sure you go for a few lessons before hitting the slopes
If this is your first time ever hitting the slopes it’s strongly advised to go for a few lessons beforehand. Tiffindell Ski Resort situated in the Eastern Cape highlands of South Africa is the perfect place to do this as they have dedicated ski instructors who will teach you all the ins and outs quickly and efficiently so you hit the slopes with confidence, bearing in mind that skiing can be dangerous if all safety precautions aren’t adhered to. For more information visit this page .
Make sure you take a friend if you’ll exploring uncharted terrain
Exploring the untouched slopes of the Western Cape mountain ranges, Lesotho or Drakensberg can be an amazing experience where one will be in splendid untouched nature in a magical time of year. However some of the snow will only be found in areas which are hard to reach without trekking or using a 4×4 so chances are you will be far away from help if anything does go wrong; make sure you travel with a companion, especially when looking for untouched powder in remote locations and always keep a basic first-hand kit in your backpack or vehicle. Alternatively, consider 4×4 hire to make things a bit easier.
Dress accordingly
This tip might seem mandatory, and yes warm clothes are very much a part of the process. However many first time skiers forget that their clothing needs to be 100% waterproof to avoid getting wet, cold and very uncomfortable. New skiing equipment can be very expensive, however in 74 Bond Street Johannesburg there is a Ski centre which specializes in affordable skiing clothing and equipment, visit their website for more.
Wear a helmet if venturing into unknown territory
As mentioned before South Africa doesn’t have many ski resorts to choose from, so there is a good chance that venturing into the wild will be a possibility when looking for some African powder. If you fall on your snowboard or skis in some of these uncharted areas there is a good chance the area under the snow will have objects that can hurt you quite seriously including rocks and trees that have now be covered with snow. So be prepared for this and wear the right protective safety wear.

A Guide to Skiing in South Africa
Skiing isn’t normally associated with a trip to South Africa , but if you’ve had your fill of sunshine, beaches and Bushveld, why not head over to AfriSki to cool down?
Situated in the Drakensberg-Maluti Mountains some 3,222 metres (10,570 feet) above sea level, in the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho and close to the artist’s town of Clarens , AfriSki Mountain Resort offers an alternative to the balmy days spent on the beach that you probably imagine when thinking of a South African holiday .
Every winter from June to August, the ski slopes become the destination of choice for many locals and tourists, who flock to this European-style ski resort for an adrenaline-packed holiday in the snow. So pack the car and get ready for a scenic road trip to one of the most breathtaking destinations in South Africa.

As in European or American ski resorts, the facilities are top of the range and include a 1,000-metre (3,280-foot) T-bar lift, two intermediate button lifts and a beginner tow lift. Ski equipment is also available to rent.
All first-timers need to complete a four-hour introductory course before hitting the slopes on their own, which is where the ski school steps in. Professional instructors will teach you the basics and make sure you’re ready to take on the slopes in no time.
Accommodation options
Backpackers’ accommodation, chalets and self-catering accommodation are all just a stone’s throw away from the restaurants, slopes, après ski bar and rental facilities. The cosy mountain chalets offer the ultimate city escape and there are many options for travellers who are on a tight budget.
The mountain lodge, Tirol, is perfect for couples, while the chalets are great for larger groups, as they sleep up to 10 people. Adding to the unique ski-resort feel, accommodation options are named after popular ski destinations such as Chamonix , Courchevel and Lillehammer .
The views from the chalets are breathtaking and they’re fully equipped with all the necessary appliances and fittings. The chalets are self-catering, so do make sure to pack enough food and drink to last for the duration of your trip.
What about the summer months?
The resort is open all year, even when there’s no snow, and is just as lively in the summer as it is in the winter months. There’s mountain biking, fly fishing, hiking and abseiling, and that’s just inside the resort. Venture into the Kingdom of Lesotho to go pony trekking through the mountains, 4×4 the Sani Pass or visit the Katse Dam – there’s a whole country out there to explore.
