2016 Chevrolet Cruze Overview

Is the 2016 chevrolet cruze a good used car.

A used 2016 Chevy Cruze is an excellent choice for compact car shoppers. It has a smooth ride, a powerful engine, and some of the highest fuel economy estimates in the segment. Additionally, the Cruze has an upscale interior with roomy, supportive front seats. However, it has a below-average reliability rating, and tall passengers won’t be happy with its poor back-seat headroom.

Based on more than 4,800 listings, the average price for a used 2016 Chevy Cruze ranges from about $11,000 to $16,000. The average price paid for a used 2016 Cruze is about $13,300. However, your pricing will vary depending on the car’s condition, mileage, location, and features.

How Much Does the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Cost to Own?

The 2016 Cruze has estimated five-year ownership costs of more than $23,000, including gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Some competing compact cars are less expensive over time, including the 2016 Mazda3 , which has five-year ownership costs of just over $20,350.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Cruze?

A new 2018 Chevrolet Cruze will typically cost you about $19,200, while a used 2016 Cruze has an average price of nearly $13,300. Purchasing a used model could save you nearly $6,000 over a new model. For the additional cost, the 2018 model gets you a slight bump in fuel economy, and it comes standard with Chevy’s Teen Driver Safety monitoring system, which limits the car’s maximum speed limit and stereo volume for others driving your car. The 2018 model is also available in a hatchback body style or with a diesel engine, neither of which the 2016 model offers. However, if you’re not interested in a hatchback and can do without the diesel engine and minor feature updates, the 2016 model is the better value.

If you’d prefer a new 2018 compact car, know that it will cost you more than a used 2016 Cruze. There are few compact cars that are cheaper than a 2016 Cruze. In fact, many top-ranked 2018 subcompact cars are also more expensive.

How Reliable Is the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze?

The 2016 Cruze has a reliability rating of three out of five from J.D. Power. This is an average score across the automotive market, but it’s a bit below average for the class. Rivals like the Kia Forte and Toyota Corolla have slightly higher reliability scores of 3.5.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Recalls

As of this writing, the 2016 Cruze has three safety recalls. One relates to the electronic park lock lever allowing the driver to remove the key from the ignition without putting the car in park. That increases the risk that the car will roll away. Another recall reports misaligned headlights, which could reduce nighttime visibility. The third recall involves the increased risk of injury during a crash; the front seatbacks can break due to incorrect welding.

Which Model Year of the Chevrolet Cruze Is Best?

The Cruze was fully redesigned for 2016, so it’s a great used model to consider to get many of the car’s latest features. The 2016 model received a lighter frame for better handling and an all-new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that increased fuel economy over previous models. The 2016 Cruze comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and it’s available with safety features like side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning. Aside from the addition of the Teen Driver safety system, a diesel engine, and a hatchback model, the 2017 Cruze is largely the same as the previous model year. Therefore, you may want to consider a nearly identical 2016 Cruze to save money.

Which Used Chevrolet Cruze Model Is Right for Me?

The 2016 Chevy Cruze sedan is available in four trims: L, LS, LT, and Premier. The Cruze L comes with a vast standard features list that includes a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and remote keyless entry. Few rivals come with as much standard technology. The Cruze LS trim has an available automatic transmission. The Cruze LT comes with cruise control and satellite radio, while the Cruze Premier adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry, and a remote car starter.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Safety

Score: 9.3/10.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze the highest rating of Good in its side and moderate front overlap crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Cruze a perfect five-star rating in front crash testing, and four out of five stars in its overall, side, and rollover safety evaluations.

The Cruze comes standard with a rearview camera. There are many available active safety features, including rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. These features are part of the Driver Confidence package, which is available only in LT and Premier models. The Driver Confidence II package, available only in the Premier trim, adds forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Versus the Competition

Which is better: 2016 chevrolet cruze or 2016 ford focus.

If you prefer spirited driving to comfortable cruising, the Ford Focus will better suit you. It has a range of powerful engines and sharp driving dynamics. Still, the Cruze is the more practical option for daily commuting. It features a more user-friendly infotainment system, a larger cabin, a better reliability rating, and more available active safety features.

Which Is Better: 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or 2016 Toyota Corolla?

Both the Cruze and Toyota Corolla have smooth, cushioned rides. In addition, these compact cars deliver great gas mileage and have easy-to-use infotainment systems. Still, the Cruze has a bit more to offer, including a livelier engine and a larger suite of standard and available technology and safety features. However, those in the back will prefer the Corolla’s roomier rear seats.

Which Is Better: 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or 2016 Kia Forte?

The Kia Forte has a few advantages over the Cruze. The Forte comes with more options, including three available engines and three body styles. It also has a spacious interior, and even tall passengers can fit comfortably in the back seats. The Kia sedan has a similar trunk capacity to the Chevy, but the Forte hatchback offers several more cubic feet of space. A Cruze hatchback is available with the 2017 model, but not the 2016. Still, the Cruze offers a more comfortable ride than the Forte, along with several additional standard and available features.

2016 Cruze Performance

How does the 2016 chevrolet cruze drive.

The front-wheel-drive 2016 Cruze is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 153 horsepower and delivers more than enough power for getting up to highway speeds. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though most models come with the available six-speed automatic. The Chevy Cruze glides smoothly over bumps, delivering good ride comfort. It handles well around corners, though its steering could use better feedback.

Does the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Get Good Gas Mileage?

Fuel economy numbers are excellent; the Cruze can earn up to 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

2016 Cruze Interior

How many people does the 2016 cruze seat.

The Chevrolet Cruze seats five on cloth upholstery. Those seated up front will enjoy plenty of headroom and legroom, as well as good thigh and back support. However, back-seat occupants may wish for more legroom. Heated front seats, heated rear seats, and leather upholstery are available.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze?

For securing child seats, there are two sets of lower anchors on the rear outboard seats and three top tether anchors behind the rear seats. The 2016 model was not rated by the IIHS, but the very similar 2017 model received a Marginal rating for its ease of use. The IIHS noted that attaching car seats can be difficult because the lower anchors are located deep in the seats.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Features

Chevy equips the Cruze with a long list of standard tech and convenience features, including a 7-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, a USB port, a rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which integrates some smartphone functions into the infotainment system. The user-friendly touch-screen system responds quickly to inputs and has straightforward menus. The Cruze Premier is available with an 8-inch touch screen and a navigation system.

Chevrolet Cruze

Big car virtues in a small package. The Cruze takes the best attributes of Chevrolet's accomplished Malibu and Impala, as well as the brand's familiar styling, and tucks them into a more maneuverable and fuel-efficient package. Boasting a comfortable ride, relatively roomy interior, and effortless power, it's a fully competitive entry that stands out in a class dominated by imported cars.

In most cases, automotive warranties are based on the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the warranty will be valid regardless of ownership. The dealership can tell you exactly how much warranty is left.

A redesigned Cruze was introduced for 2016. The car was roomier, especially in the rear seat and offered a more luxurious interior. The 2016 car's standard engine is an updated 1.4-liter, four-cylinder turbo mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A start-stop feature reduces fuel use during idling. Infotainment features included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which mirror your cell-phone screen on the dashboard. It put Apple or Google maps at your fingertips while driving and made it easy to use natural voice commands via Siri or Google Now from your phone.   A 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine and hatchback version were new for 2017.  2019 was the last year for the Cruze.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze First Drive Review: Is This the Camaro of Compacts?

Small Swagger

Manufacturer Photographer Frank Markus Writer Apr 18, 2016

gm cruise 2016

See All 70 Photos

Last year Chevy cut 200 pounds out of the Camaro, made it 28 percent stiffer, gave it a new lightweight turbo four-cylinder base engine, improved the handling a bunch, gave it a more menacing face, and voilà: Car of the Year! The script read at our first-drive event to recap the intro of the new 2016 Cruze included a whole bunch of these same plot elements: Weight is down by as much as 250 pounds. The body shell is chock-full of press-hardened steels and clever CAD trickery to make it 27 percent stiffer. A new direct-injected, turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder with auto stop-start will power all Cruzes (until next year's return of a diesel option). The chassis gets upgrades such as internal rebound springs in the struts and hydraulic bushings plus an optional Watts linkage in back. And the Cruze gets a fashion makeover that includes today's de rigueur coupelike roofline and Chevy's sleeker twin-grille facade.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner?

That question can only be answered by the entire Motor Trend brain trust in the crucible of a weeklong battery of testing in California's high desert, but for a first taste Chevy invited a small number of us to take a couple laps of the ride evaluation track at its Milford Proving Ground in rural Michigan in each of four trim variants. The company even provided mainstream versions of a Focus, a Corolla, an Elantra, and a Civic for comparison.

gm cruise 2016

The new engine, rated at 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft, sounds and feels a good bit stronger than the two gas engines it replaces, and Chevy estimates it'll scoot to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. If true (and manufacturer estimates historically trend conservative), that would put it just a tick ahead of the new benchmark Civic 2.0-liter manual and a half-second slower than a 174-horse, 1.5-liter turbo Civic Touring with a CVT. Ford 's 2.0-liter Focus sedan is a tick quicker, and the midlevel 1.8L turbo Jetta gets there in 7.3 seconds. Don't expect next year's 1.6-liter oil-burner from GM's new Medium Diesel family to be any quicker. (In Opel trim it makes 134 hp and 236 lb-ft.)

Acceleration is nice and smooth with the six-speed automatic, but our single biggest gripe with the new Cruze is with the manual transmission's shifter. The top of the knob is bigger than average and borderline clunky, the need to pull up on a little button under the shifter to get reverse feels antique, the shift throws are slightly long, and the shift action feels way too light. It seems as if its engineers didn't expect many takers, which will of course probably be the case, and hence didn't sweat the details. The only other major gripe was with the brake pedal positioning, which feels way too high above the accelerator.

gm cruise 2016

My first ride was in an LT with an automatic—the expected big-volume seller—riding on 205/55R16 Goodyear Assurance tires (the smallest I sampled, as there were no L or LS models present with 15-inch tires). Man, was this car quiet—far more so than any of the competitors or any of the bigger-tired Cruzes, for that matter. The ride compliance was impressive, given the reasonable lateral grip these tires developed with no tendency to drift wide in washboard curves. The ride and handling impressions were identical on a manual Cruze RS that wore Hankook Kinergy GTs in the same size.

For comparison, I drove a 2.0-liter Focus SE on 215/55R16 ContiProContacts. The all-black interior looked far shinier and cheaper, and it was louder and less refined inside, but its chassis felt like an equal match in terms of ride and handling, with a bit more road feel coming through the helm. I also sampled the Toyota Corolla LE on Michelin Primacy MXV4s in the same tire size as the Cruze LT. This interior seemed antique, and the weaker engine was a real moaner when pressed. The body structure also seemed less robust, and there was a lot more head-toss. (Credit the Cruze's rebound springs, which provide secondary roll control that allows the anti-roll bar to be less stiff.)

My next step up the Cruze's performance ladder was in a Premier variant with the improved rear bushings and Watts linkage wearing 225/45R17 Firestone Firehawk GT rubber. Abetting the improved lateral grip generated by the tires with the extra lateral stiffness of the Watts link endows this version with greater cornering precision and authority that exacts only a minor penalty in terms of ride quality or road noise from the fat lower-profile tires. A slightly quicker steering ratio (16.0:1 versus 17.2:1) suits the more responsive chassis well.

gm cruise 2016

The point of the Cruze's performance pyramid is the Premier RS. That $995 premium for the RS buys the same gloss-black grille, decklid spoiler, more aggressive front and rear fascias, and side rocker sills that $695 one gets you on lesser Cruzes, but on the Premier it also buys fancy Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires in size 225/40R18 on unique rims. This one cornered the most aggressively, but we'll need to quantify any improvement in grip at a track, and I'll be gobsmacked if the numbers reveal an improvement that my ears would deem worthy of the unholy din these meats generate on all types of pavement. Take a long test drive before signing up for this punishment.

My final competitive drive was in the Civic EX on 215/55R16 Firestone FT140s. The Civic, you may recall, was a finalist in our most recent Car of the Year contest . Flat foot this 158-hp, 138-lb-ft, 2.0-liter CVT powertrain, and it sounds and feels like it's accelerating quicker (certainly louder) than the Cruzes. Its suspension also felt a tad more sophisticated, as it never bottomed or topped out on the entire course, even traversing a big dip.

There's only so much you can tell about a car from eight laps of a 3.5-mile course, but a case is building to declare the Cruze to be the Camaro of the compact class. We'll need a bit more time to decide whether it's the Civic of the class.

News Release Details

Fri, March 11, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO – General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) announced today it is acquiring Cruise Automation to add Cruise’s deep software talent and rapid development capability to further accelerate GM’s development of autonomous vehicle technology.

“Fully autonomous vehicles can bring our customers enormous benefits in terms of greater convenience, lower cost and improved safety for their daily mobility needs,” said GM President Dan Ammann.

Cruise will operate as an independent unit within GM’s recently formed Autonomous Vehicle Development Team led by Doug Parks, GM vice president of autonomous technology and vehicle execution, and will continue to be based in San Francisco. Founded in 2013, Cruise has moved quickly to develop and test autonomous vehicle technology in San Francisco’s challenging city environment.

“GM's commitment to autonomous vehicles is inspiring, deliberate, and completely in line with our vision to make transportation safer and more accessible,” said Kyle Vogt, founder of Cruise Automation. “We are excited to be partnering with GM and believe this is a ground-breaking and necessary step toward rapidly commercializing autonomous vehicle technology.”

According to Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, “Cruise provides our company with a unique technology advantage that is unmatched in our industry. We intend to invest significantly to further grow the talent base and capabilities already established by the Cruise team.”

The acquisition of Cruise is GM’s latest step toward its goal of redefining the future of personal mobility. Since the beginning of the year, GM has entered into a strategic alliance with ride-sharing company Lyft; formed Maven, its personal mobility brand for car-sharing fleets in many U.S. cities, and established a separate unit for autonomous vehicle development.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands. More information on the company and its subsidiaries, including OnStar, a global leader in vehicle safety, security and information services, can be found at http://www.gm.com .

Bridge at sunset with a city view, GM Investors

  • GM is Positioned for Strong, Long Term Business Results

GM reportedly spent over $1 billion on a tiny startup that holds a key to the future of driving

General Motors announced on Friday that it would acquire Cruise Automation , a San Francisco-based self-driving-car startup founded in 2013.

Neither GM nor Cruise disclosed the deal price.

However, Fortune's Dan Primack and Kristen Korosec reported that GM bought Cruise for more than $1 billion , in cash and stock combined, as much as 10 times the company's valuation. A separate report in Re/code seemed to confirm the price.

GM declined to comment on how much it paid.

Cruise had raised $20 million from various investors. The startup was a product of the Y Combinator accelerator program.

The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter, pending regulatory approval.

"GM shares a common vision for the deployment of autonomous vehicles at a mass scale — a clear and vivid vision," said Kyle Vogt, Cruise's founder and CEO.

He added that Cruise's 40 employees would remain in San Francisco but that the size of the team would be aggressively expanded. He declined to comment on how many new employees would join the company, which will be incorporated into GM's newly formed autonomous-driving group.

Vogt was previously involved with SocialCam and Twitch, the video-streaming site for video games that sold to Amazon in 2014 for $970 million.

In the past year, GM has been accelerating the pace of development for its electric- and autonomous-driving-vehicle technologies. The largest automaker in the US also made a $500 million investment in the ride-hailing service Lyft earlier this year.

Related stories

The carmaker rolled out its Bolt electric car at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, with plans to have it on the road by the end of 2016. GM also created a stand-alone ride-sharing brand this year, called Maven, and has placed autonomous-vehicle development in a single business unit.

"We're here to win," said GM president Dan Ammann, who joined Vogt to make the announcement. "We're super excited, and we have a very clear vision. We are very serious about leading, and we're committed to investment."

Both Ammann, who now sits on the Lyft board, and GM CEO Mary Barra have indicated the golden opportunity for the automaker is autonomous, electric-powered ride-sharing. The disadvantages of trying to integrate those technologies and services in conventional cars and trucks are overcome, in the thinking of GM's leadership, if fleets of driverless electric vehicles can be used in cities to provide mobility to customers who don't want to own a vehicle.

Ride-sharing is a very obvious place for GM to use Cruise's technology, Ammann said, as the automaker seeks to "fundamentally change the future of mobility."

Fully autonomous vehicles haven't yet hit the street, but GM and others, including Tesla, are now bringing partial self-driving technologies online in their cars. Ammann stressed that he expected GM's acquisition of Cruise to enable GM to bring full autonomy to market.

The company garnered some media attention for its technology, which was undergoing testing on Audis in California. Inc. portrayed the company and its MIT-dropout founder as trying to beat the big names in self-driving vehicles , chiefly Google, to the finish line.

Business Insider's Alyson Shontell caught up with the company and its tech in mid-2104:

Called Cruise RP-1, the technology costs $10,000 to install and the process of hooking it up to a vehicle takes a few hours in the company's San Francisco facility. Right now, Cruise is only compatible with Audi A4 or S4 vehicles, but the team of mostly MIT engineers plans to expand the product line quickly. The goal of Cruise is to create a suite of products that will eventually turn any car into a driverless vehicle

After the GM deal was announced, Vogt didn't characterize Cruise's technology as an aftermarket bolt-on, but rather as an integrated hardware and software system, and he added that Cruise was among the few companies granted a permit by the California DMV to test self-driving technology .

Vogt told Business Insider that safety was the primary reason he dived into the self-driving world. " There are 30,000 people who die in car accidents per year in the US," he said.

"Most of those accidents are caused by drivers, not machines. In a situation where the tech exists to solve this problem, we have a responsibility to solve that issue."

Cruise created a video in 2014 that showcased its technology. Watch it below:

GM taps ex-Amazon and Microsoft exec to lead self-driving startup Cruise amid comeback

General Motors has had a majority stake in Cruise since 2016.

General Motors has added two more members to the executive team overseeing self-driving startup Cruise’s comeback, including a new chief executive officer.

Marc Whitten, one of the key engineers behind Microsoft’s Xbox video game console, will take over as CEO on July 16. In a statement, GM CEO Mary Barra touted Whitten’s “extensive experience in scaling products and building ecosystems around them.” The industry veteran has had stints leading Sonos’ development of smart speakers and software and overseeing Amazon’s entertainment devices and services division.

“Joining Cruise is the easiest ‘yes’ in my career,” Whitten wrote on LinkedIn . I’m inspired by its deep and meaningful mission and world-class technology, and most importantly the incredible team driving both of these things forward.”

Cruise has also hired Nick Mulholland as its chief communications and marketing officer. Mulholland had previously led global communications at electric truck maker Rivian .

They join Cruise at a pivotal time in the company’s history as it attempts to regain the public’s trust . Last October, one of its self-driving cars dragged a pedestrian for roughly 20 feet after a separate — human-operated — car hit them.

The incident cost the company its license to operate robotaxis in San Francisco andled to a recall of Cruise’s fleet, the resignation of former CEO and co-founder Kyle Vogt , and the departure of several other key executives. Cruise also halted all testing across the U.S.

Since then, Cruise has hired a new chief safety officer and published a highly critical third-party report detailing the company’s poor leadership, mistakes in judgment, and lack of coordination. The company has said it “maintained ongoing and extensive testing in complex, dynamic simulated environments and on closed courses” during its almost six-month operational freeze.

In April, Cruise resumed manual testing in Phoenix , before launching supervised autonomous driving tests a month later. Earlier this month, Cruise resumed manual driving tests in Dallas , where it had been in its final testing phase before the October incident.

Meanwhile, rival autonomous vehicle company Waymo on Tuesday opened its 24/7 robotaxi service to anyone in San Francisco , noting that almost 300,000 people have signed up for its services. The Google-backed firm is planning to soon test fully autonomous rides across California’s San Francisco Peninsula .

California to fine GM's unit Cruise for delaying report on San Francisco accident

A California regulator said on Thursday it is imposing the maximum penalty possible on General Motors' Cruise unit for its failure to promptly provide complete information to the commission about an accident involving one of its self-driving vehicles last year.

Cruise did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Why it's important

Cruise along with other self-driving vehicle companies like Alphabet's Waymo and Amazon's Zoox have come under heavy scrutiny from regulators arising out of safety concerns due to multiple crashes involving their vehicles.

By the numbers

Cruise will pay the maximum penalty allowable by the California Public Utilities Commission, totaling $112,500, which equates to a $7,500 fine for each of the 15 days during which Cruise withheld information about the incident, the regulator said.

Cruise will also provide "collision reports" to the CPUC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for collisions occurring in California.

The decision from the CPUC comes a few months after Cruise had raised its offer to resolve a probe by the regulator over its delay in disclosing details of a pedestrian crash.

On Oct. 2, in San Francisco, a pedestrian was struck by another car and hit a second time by a Cruise robotaxi.

Cruise's permit to operate in California was suspended and the NHTSA issued a recall of its vehicles after the incident.

Cruise had resumed operations in the U.S. with a small fleet of human-driven vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona in April, but Cruise's authority to provide passenger service in its autonomous vehicles remains suspended, the CPUC said on Thursday.
