Gorillaz announces biggest Detroit concert to date

Show is part of the group's 22-date 2022 north american tour..

Damon Albarn's Gorillaz will stampede into Little Caesars Arena to play its biggest Detroit concert to date as part of the band's 2022 tour, promoters announced Monday. 

The experimental alt-pop and hip-hop outfit will play the downtown arena on Oct. 5. 

Tickets start at $55 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via Ticketmaster channels. Earthgang will open the show. 

Gorillaz' debut album was released in 2001 and the group has since functioned with a rotating group of collaborators from across the musical sphere, with Blur's Albarn at its center. 

The group's most recent album, "Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez," was released in 2020 and features guest appearances from Elton John, Robert Smith, St. Vincent, Schoolboy Q, Beck, 6lack and Peter Hook, among others. 

The group's last Detroit concert was a 2017 engagement at the Fox Theatre.

Gorillaz Announce 2022 North American Tour

Gorillaz have announced a tour of North America for later this year. It starts in Vancouver in September, wrapping in Miami near the end of October. EarthGang opens all shows through October 19, with Jungle taking the first slot on October 21 and 23. Since 2018’s The Now Now , the Damon Albarn–led enterprise has rolled out new music via the Song Machine series, reissued 2001’s Gorillaz , and published an art book . Gorillaz also issued an EP titled Meanwhile last summer. At her headlining Coachella set in April, Billie Eilish covered the group’s 2005 hit “Feel Good Inc.,” bringing out Albarn and De La Soul’s Pos to join her.

Gorillaz Announce 2022 North American Tour With EARTHGANG, Jungle

Gorillaz  have announced a rare set of tour dates set to carry the animated band across North America in 2022. The slate of nearly two dozen concerts will take the group Guinness World Records  dubbed the “Most Successful Virtual Act” through the U.S. and Canada this fall with support from EARTHGANG and  Jungle  on select dates.

The tour will begin on September 11th in Vancouver, BC and include stops in Seattle, WA; San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; Boston, MA; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; and many more before wrapping in Miami, FL on October 23rd. Bandleader Damon Albarn ‘s virtual colleagues—singer 2D , bassist Murdoc Niccals , guitarist Noodle , and drummer Russel Hobbs —will front a 14-person live band for the group’s only planned tour of North America its first since 2018. EARTHGANG will open the majority of dates while Jungle will help close out the tour with support on the final two shows in Florida.

In 2020, Gorillaz released guest-filled experiment Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez . The 17-track album featured myriad collaborators from  Elton John  to  ScHoolboy Q to  St. Vincent  to late Afrobeat pioneer  Tony Allen and many more. An announcement for the tour noted that the extended live band will be “aided and abetted by a varying cast of guest performers.” A promotional clip for the tour lists  Sweetie Irie , Fatoumata Diawara , De La Soul , and  Bootie Brown as some of the guests.

Gorillaz Announce North American Tour 2022

Today, Gorillaz confirmed a North American tour set to commence in the fall. The historic and rare event marks the English virtual band’s first Stateside visit since their 2018 tour which concluded with the first-ever Demon Dayz Festival in Los Angeles and is the only North American outing for the group on the horizon.

Gorillaz will be brought to life by Damon Albarn and a 14-piece Gorillaz live band. The live band will feature a rotating cast of guest performers for the 21 arena dates across the U.S. and Canada starting at the Rogers Arena on Sept. 11 in Vancouver, BC and wrapping up on Oct. 23 in Miami, Fla.’s FTX Arena.

The North American trek is a part of Gorillaz’s world tour which is currently bringing, what has been recognized by The Guinness Book Of World Records as the planet’s Most Successful Virtual Act, to stages from South America to Europe.

The Grammy Award-winning group will be joined by EARTHGANG from their shows from Vancouver through Atlanta – Jungle will support them during their performances in Orlando and Miami.

The Gorillaz have announced a North American tour that will commence this fall. Kicking off September 11 in Vancouver and wrapping up October 23 in Miami, the renowned multi-media experience will also include a headlining spot at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas on September 17.

The English innovators 21-date outing will be their first stateside visit in four years - see the setlist from their final LA date (The Demon Days Festival) in 2018 here .

The band are currently in Brazil on their world tour, which kicked off earlier this month in Uruguay . Full list of new dates below, tickets go on sale beginning this Friday, May 20.

Gorillaz announce North America tour

Damon albarn and his virtual friends are hitting the road..

Gorillaz have announced details of a North American tour. The animated band, led by Damon Albarn, will hit the road in September with 21 dates in the diary. The shows begin in Vancouver on September 11 and wrap up on October 23 with a show at Miami's FTX Arena. They'll be joined by support acts Earthgang (September 11 to October 19) and Jungle (October 21 and 23). Tickets are available from Friday, May 20.

The upcoming shows will be Gorillaz' first in North America since 2018. The most recent Gorillaz album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez , was released in 2020. Albarn recently joined Billie Eilish on stage during her Coachella headline set.

Gorillaz has confirmed an historic, rare, and not to be missed North American tour. The tour, produced by Live Nation, is Gorillaz’ first Stateside trip since the 2018 trek that concluded with the inaugural Demon Dayz Festival L.A., described by UPROXX as  “truly something special to see,”  and is the bands only planned North American outing on the horizon. The world’s most successful virtual act will once again be brought to life by Damon Albarn and the 14-piece Gorillaz live band — aided and abetted by a varying cast of guest performers — for a series of 21 unique and unforgettable arena dates across the U.S. and Canada (plus a previously announced headline appearance at the Life Is Beautiful festival) beginning September 11 in Vancouver, BC and wrapping up on October 23 in Miami, FL. 

The Gorillaz live experience hailed by ROLLING STONE as  “an overwhelming pop spectacle, with Damon Albarn’s steady presence to keep the audience focused”  draws on 20+ years of genre-bending, paradigm-shifting, consistently innovative musical brilliance. Gorillaz is heading out on the road for a special tour this fall. On Tuesday (May 30), the group announced The Getaway 2023 tour, which is scheduled to take place in September.

Gorillaz has confirmed a historic, rare and not to be missed “North American Tour” that will include a stop at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. The tour, produced by Live Nation, is Gorillaz’ first Stateside trip since the 2018 trek that concluded with the inaugural “Demon Dayz Festival L.A.,” described by UPROXX as “truly something special to see," and is the band’s only planned North American outing on the horizon. The world’s most successful virtual act will once again be brought to life by Damon Albarn and the 14-piece Gorillaz live band — aided and abetted by a varying cast of guest performers — for a series of 21 unique and unforgettable arena dates across the U.S. and Canada. Support will be provided by EARTHGANG for the local date.

The Gorillaz live experience hailed by Rolling Stone as “an overwhelming pop spectacle, with Damon Albarn’s steady presence to keep the audience focused” draws on 20+ years of genre-bending, paradigm-shifting, consistently innovative musical brilliance. Gorillaz is hitting up North America for their first set of tour dates in four years.

2-D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals and Russel Hobbs will be joined by supporting acts EARTHGANG and Jungle , and are set to kick off their North American leg with a Vancouver show in early September. Fans can then catch the band in areas like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia before they close out their tour in Miami in late October.

Big Sean, Bazzi, and Barry Sanders: The Best Things We Saw at the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit

From Thursday through Saturday last week, 775,000 fans crowded into downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft, setting a new attendance record for the event in the process. Football took center stage, but music was very much along for the ride, as Detroit’s rock and hip-hop royalty rubbed elbows with its sports legends, in some cases literally. Detroit Lions superfan Eminem , who’s also been known to rap a bit, joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell onstage to open the draft on Thursday night, while Lions legend Barry Sanders hung out with Bob Seger and Big Sean , who performed earlier in the evening. From there, music and sports continued to intermingle all weekend. 

Over three days, the NFL’s 32 teams drafted 257 players in all, and events stretched from the massive main stage in Cadillac Square and Campus Martius Park to stages and clubs along downtown Detroit’s streets and alleys, and into the the Belt, a once-empty downtown alley that’s been reimagined to host multiple music venues and art spaces. ( Rolling Stone co-sponsored several Belt events throughout the weekend, in collaboration with Library Street Collective , Deluxx Fluxx , the Skip , and Rock , Dan Gilbert’s family office.)

One thing that’s certain: Williams, who broke an absurd amount of records during his Heisman-winning season at USC, is walking into the best supporting cast a rookie QB has perhaps ever had. One of those pieces is Rome Odunze, out of the University of Washington, who also got drafted by the Bears in front of a massive crowd in downtown Detroit. Williams’ emotional reaction to landing Odunze is warranted: The quarterback will now have a star rookie, a six-time Pro Bowl honoree in Keenan Allen, and tight end Cole Kmet, who was in the top 10 in receiving yards last season, to throw to in his freshman campaign. —W.A.

A-Trak Keeps the Party Going The Belt didn’t need to wait for the draft to end to kick off a block party that started mid-afternoon Saturday and went well into the wee hours. A-Trak, the veteran DJ and producer from just to the north — that’d be Canada — headlined a lineup of DJs that also featured ATM and Loading…. Performing at the Skip, A-Trak stirred up a dance party of jersey-clad draft-goers that filled the alley nearly end-to-end. He was in top form, touching on the hip-hop, electronic, and house beats that have defined his nearly 30-year career. Following A-Trak’s set, the party moved inside to Deluxx Fluxx, where Sango, Ro Spit, and Kid McFly performed. —J.H.

Chase B Soaks Up the Vibes — Then Creates Some Chase B wasn’t posted up at The Belt just for good vibes and Andre Power’s mixes — he also had his own set that resulted in a line down the block and dozens clamoring to get in to the Deluxx Fluxx nightclub to see the producer/DJ, who’s signed to Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. Chase’s set included a ton of rap hits, many by the producer’s own affiliates and label mates. The DJ took the set as an opportunity to test out his new remix of Travis Scott’s “FE!N” that dropped on Friday at midnight, which turns La Flame’s rage track into a dance record. Chase B’s party went on long into the night, but you wouldn’t know it if you caught him the next morning — chatting away on the phone at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport hopping on an early morning flight back to New York City (same). —W.A.

The Detroit Youth Choir Knows Its History The draft’s second day started with the Detroit Youth Choir on the main stage paying tribute to their Motown forebears. Comprised of students from across the Detroit area, the choir appeared at the draft fresh off a runner-up turn on America’s Got Talent and a Disney+ docuseries . Their love for their hometown was on display as they sang and danced through a Motown medley that included “Get Ready,” “Dancing in the Street,” “Back in My Arms Again,” “What’s Going On,” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” To close the set, the school kids were joined by former Super Bowl champions, as the NFL Players Choir led the ensemble through a pair of gospel numbers. —J.H.

Watch parties, tours, panel discussions planned during NFL draft in Detroit

Celebrations will unfold across various parks, bars, hotels and the streets of downtown Detroit as fans and football figures come together for the NFL draft Thursday through Saturday.

Some events are free and others require registration, so visitors are encouraged to plan ahead as limited admission will be granted. Here are a few events to consider as you prepare to celebrate the NFL draft in Detroit.

Draft Day in the D

The Downtown Detroit Partnership is hosting a three-day celebration open to fans and visitors of all ages across downtown Detroit. Festivities will take place at Capitol Park, Beacon Park, Paradise Valley Beatrice Buck Park, Grand Circus Park and on a closed-off portion of Woodward Avenue between State and Witherell streets. Highlights will include 10 20-foot video walls showcasing live feeds of the event, more than 60 live music performances, more than 35 local food trucks, Bud Light beer tents, more than 45 local vendors and more.

11 a.m.-11 p .m. Thursday-Friday; and noon-8 p.m. Saturday. Free admission.

Greektown Tailgate

Experience two blocks of live music, sports viewing, games, food, drinks and more in the heart of historic Greektown. The main stage will host 19 bands; the DJ stage will feature 12 local DJs and highlight Detroit's electronic music and dance scene.

Noon-midnight April Thursday-Saturday on Monroe Street between St. Antoine and Brush streets in Detroit.

Corktown Draft Experience

There will be viewing tents, complimentary shuttles, access to Draft festivities along with stores and restaurants offering exclusive deals and discounts.

The Corner Ballpark , also located in Corktown, is the official activation site for kids during the 2024 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft Eve in the D

ACG Detroit (Associated for Corporate Growth) has released a limited number of tickets for this event featuring an appearance by Detroit Lions President and CEO Rod Wood . Enjoy an open bar, food, DJ and complimentary valet parking.
