Grand Canyon South Rim Tours

Peer out the window from one of these Grand Canyon helicopter tours and you'll experience a visual feast without rival. More than half a million visitors take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour each year. Most of these helicopter rides take off from either the Grand Canyon Airport in the village of Tusayan just outside the South Rim, from Las Vegas, Nevada or Sedona, Arizona.

Grand Canyon helicopter tour companies upgrade and maintain their fleet often for first-class comfort, passenger protection, and environmental protection, and tour narration can be offered in up to seven different languages, making a helicopter tour a great choice for groups and travelers of any age, ability, or nationality on a moderate budget.

Ask any of the 22,000 Colorado River runners who brave Grand Canyon river rafting trips each year to describe the experience and you're likely to hear that it is the trip of a lifetime. If your bucket list includes rafting the Colorado River, you'll be happy to know that there is a range of options almost as long as the 277-mile section of the river that cuts through the Grand Canyon. Many Grand Canyon river rafting trips depart by van from Flagstaff or Las Vegas and commonly put-in at points such as Lees Ferry, Phantom Ranch or Peach Springs. Some trips require a roughly 10-mile hike down into the Canyon at the beginning, and some require a 10-mile hike out at the end. Dories, rafts, and motorized rigs are the watercraft of choice through this world-class river rafting wonderland, and trips can be powered by oar, motor or paddle. Trips are moderately expensive, often require some advance planning, and last anywhere from one day to three weeks.

In one day and on a moderate budget (under $400 per person), you can whitewater raft from Peach Springs toward Grand Canyon West, or take a smooth-water float from Lees Ferry, about 50 miles north of the North Rim. If your budget, travel planning and vacation schedules allow, you can embark on a 4 - 9 day excursion on the Upper or Lower half of the Grand Canyon in a motorized or oar-powered raft or dory for as little as $1,110 per person. For the extreme level of adventure and budget, you can spend two-to-nearly-three weeks rafting the entire length of the Grand Canyon, from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead, to the tune of about $5,550 per person.

Once you've narrowed down your choices by trip length, style, and budget, be sure to ask your river outfitter for help with your travel planning pre-and-post river trip. Your transportation will likely be covered by the outfitter, and you can find accommodations (and a hot shower, trust us!) before and after your river trip here.

The proverbial "walk in the park" is a great way to explore the Grand Canyon. Millions of visitors stroll along the South Rim Trail each year, taking a self-led tour from viewpoint to viewpoint; no guide required. But hiking the Grand Canyon's more difficult trails, mule trips, day hiking, and overnight backpacking provides the sturdy traveler challenging access to the amazing inner Canyon from the South, North and West Rims (from Havasupai Hilltop; not to be confused with Grand Canyon West.)

Hiking the Grand Canyon with a guide offers adventurers several benefits beyond simple access to the Colorado River, well-known trails and classic views. Professional guides and hiking outfitters coordinate and provide for your transportation, required backcountry permits, utmost safety, first-rate gear, extraordinary meals, and years of experience and knowledge to share.

You can take a guided Grand Canyon tour day hike of some of the most famous trails from the South Rim, or go further into the Grand Canyon than you might attempt on your own on an overnight trip. Guided backpacking trips typically last 3 - 5 days and offer a range of difficulty, views, destinations, periods of solitude and amenities. Expect to spend anywhere from $100 to $300 per day per person, a considerable value when you keep in mind all that comes with an all-inclusive guided hike or backpacking adventure.

Ground tours are some of the easiest, most affordable, accessible, and laid-back tours to the Grand Canyon. Perfect for groups of various ages, abilities, and budget, ground tours allow Grand Canyon visitors to ride to their destination in air-conditioned comfort while taking in the scenery and receiving expert narration from their guide. Upon arrival at either the South Rim or Grand Canyon West, ground-tour participants are allowed ample time to wander to various viewpoints, take photos, explore visitor's centers, stroll along the trails and listen to a ranger or Hualapai-led talks.

Ground tours from Las Vegas are commonly destined for Grand Canyon West, home of the glass Grand Canyon Skywalk attraction, and are highly recommended for visitors who like having their transportation, tickets and upgrade options available in an all-inclusive booking experience. We recommend you inquire about adding a stop at Hoover Dam to your ground tour from Las Vegas; this man-made engineering marvel, located at the state line between Arizona and Nevada, is not to be missed.

Starting your trip from Phoenix, Sedona or Flagstaff? Ground tours to the South Rim are readily available from all three of these Grand Canyon gateways. With hotel pickup frequently included at no extra cost, it's easy to take a ground tour to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, and enjoy spectacular views of the Sonoran Desert, Mogollon Rim, and Red Rock Country along the way. No matter what your departure point, all Grand Canyon ground tours pack a full 14 - 18-hour day with views, adventures, and memories.

For nearly a century, since Grand Canyon National Park was established in 1919 and the Santa Fe Railway stretched from Williams to the South Rim, the train has been an integral part of the Grand Canyon's history. In the middle of the 20th century, when Route 66 came roaring into town and newly popular automobiles barreled into town on the wheels of progress, rail service to the Grand Canyon ceased. But in 1989, Max and Thelma Biegert revived and restored the rail line, establishing one of the South Rim's most popular attractions - the Grand Canyon Railway.

Today, Grand Canyon visitors have a range of options among Grand Canyon Railway train tour packages. From train-only tickets to railway and lodging packages, visitors are invited to select from a variety of seating classes, overnight accommodations and other options to custom design the train tour package that's right for them.

Riders board the train in Williams in the morning, ride up to Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim and have several hours to spend walking the Rim Trail, taking the shuttles to various viewpoints, visiting the visitor's center, listening to ranger-led talks, taking photos, dining overlooking the rim, and more. Visitors take the train back to Williams in the late afternoon. Be sure to watch out for train robbers (!) - a band of marauders just might board the train, providing riders with a little bit of theater and lighthearted fun.

Most Grand Canyon helicopter tours are considered safe, with vetted pilots who meet approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration in maintenance, training and aircraft safety. 10 Best Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours of 2024

Home | Travel | North America | United States | Arizona | Grand Canyon | 10 Best Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours of 2024

Taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is an experience you will never forget. After all, observing this natural wonder from a birds-eye view is far superior to seeing it from ground level.

In fact, I first saw the Grand Canyon from one of the overlooks, and I was a bit disappointed. The ridge was full of people, so I had to battle the crowds, and it was a cloudy day, so the views weren’t that great. However, when I took a Grand Canyon air tour , it was completely different and I got to see the full magnitude of the canyon, its crevasses, and the surrounding landmasses.

Over the years, we’ve taken several helicopter tours over the Grand Canyon , but the first one, the one we took during our 10-day West Coast road trip , will be always special so I can’t recommend this ride enough. We’ve also taken this tour and this flight from Las Vegas, and now that we live in Vegas, we’re excited to see even more.

Grand Canyon from above, aerial tour grand canyon

If you’re still not sure which is the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for you, I’ll share my top recommendations, which range in price, duration, and route. You can even depart from Grand Canyon Airport, so I’m sure you’ll find an excursion that suits your trip.

Also, did you know that you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour below the rim? This is an ideal option if you want to avoid the strenuous hike to the bottom or if you want to add a Colorado River cruise to your tour.

Other Grand Canyon helicopter tour companies

As you can imagine, flying over the Grand Canyon is quite an experience, so it’s not surprising that there are several helicopter tour companies in the area:

  • Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters : Papillon has been in business for over 50 years and is the largest Grand Canyon helicopter tour company.  We found them to have a variety of tour options from Las Vegas, the South Rim, and Grand Canyon West for every budget. You can read our full Papillon Helicopters review for more info.
  • Maverick : Maverick is another well-known company that, like Papillon, uses EcoStar helicopters for tours over the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.
  • Sundance : Sundance has been in business since 1985 and offers Grand Canyon helicopter tours out of Las Vegas.
  • Vegas Tours : This company also operates out of Las Vegas and provides scenic flying tours of the West and South Rims.

After flying over the Grand Canyon many times, I can tell you that we’ve had the best experiences with Papillon. This company always does a great job, offering us beautiful views, safe trips, and friendly assistance.

My experience taking a Grand Canyon helicopter ride

If I had to choose one word to describe my experience flying over the Grand Canyon , it would be “magical.”

The view from the ground-level outlooks didn’t live up to my expectations at all, and I couldn’t capture the true size and majesty of the canyon. Indeed, it all depends on the time of day and the lighting conditions, but I would still 100% recommend taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see this place from above. Not only will you see what a marvel the Grand Canyon is, but you won’t have to deal with all the crowds on the ground!

Aerial view of the Grand Canyon, the grand canyon helicopter tour

Before booking with Papillon, I read plenty of Grand Canyon helicopter tour reviews to make the best choice for my schedule, budget, and preferences. I also made sure to buy the best travel insurance for the USA for any unexpected situations.

We ended up taking the South Rim Airplane Tour because it was one of the most affordable options. Plus, we wanted a tour that left from the South Rim (to fly within the National Park limits), as well as an airplane so we could go higher and explore more remote locations. The tour was the perfect choice for us, and we could appreciate the canyon’s full scope.

Over the years, we ended up taking that trip again, as well as the Golden Eagle Helicopter Tour and the Grand Celebration Tour . If you want to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from Las Vegas , I recommend the latter excursion since it does a below-the-rim landing. In addition, it’s a complete aerial tour of the Grand Canyon ’s West Rim, and it’s one of my favorite tours from Las Vegas .

My Grand Canyon helicopter tour review

As someone who has flown over the Grand Canyon quite a bit, I have some tips to ensure you have the best trip possible:

  • First, it’s better to book your flight for early in the morning or just before sunset so you can get the best views.
  • Second, check the weather forecast since the tour operator may cancel your trip if the conditions aren’t right.
  • Lastly, limit what you eat about two hours before the tour. My mum learned this the hard way when she got sick during our ride. If you’re prone to dizziness, take some medication beforehand.

That said, the view from a Grand Canyon helicopter is unmatched, and as long as you follow my advice, you should be fine. Even though we’ve taken several Grand Canyon helicopter tours , we’re always amazed by the incredible landmasses, the ancient stone walls, the undulating Colorado River, and the stunning gorges and plateaus.

Grand Canyon helicopter tour FAQs

If you’re still not sure which Grand Canyon helicopter tour to choose, or you have some concerns, here are the answers to some common questions. Of course, feel free to leave us a comment if you have any other questions. We’ll be happy to help!

Which is better: a Grand Canyon helicopter tour or an airplane tour?

When you’re choosing between a Grand Canyon helicopter ride or an airplane tour, consider that airplanes can fly further and higher. So, a Grand Canyon airplane tour will be better if you want to focus on the depth and vastness of the canyon, or if you’re interested in landscape photography.

That said, Grand Canyon helicopter tours are awesome, especially if you want closer views of the canyon walls and gorges. Also, if you want to descend below the rim, remember that you can only do that with a helicopter.

Is it better to take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour from the South Rim or West Rim?

Grand Canyon National Park consists of the South, North, and East Rims, and is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. However, the West Rim is maintained by the Hualapai Tribe, and so, it is a private tourist attraction.

In general, you’ll get the best views with a helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon South Rim . Since below-the-rim landings aren’t allowed in this part of the park, the natural environment is better protected here.

On the other hand, the West Rim is quite popular, and this is the only place where you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour to explore the canyon floor. Moreover, if you’re interested in other attractions like boat rides, they’re available at Grand Canyon West. Finally, the West Rim is also closer to Las Vegas (2.5 hours versus 4 hours to the South Rim), so take that into account.

When is the best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

The best time for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is early morning when the desert and the canyon’s rock formations have an intense reddish glow. There will also be less turbulence in the morning, and it won’t be as hot or hazy outside.

As an alternative, you can take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour at sunset . You’ll get some very nice views, and the temperatures will be cooler than they are during the day.

How much does a Grand Canyon helicopter tour cost?

The price of a Grand Canyon helicopter tour can be as low as $169 per person. However, the cost depends on factors like the duration of the flight, the aircraft, and any extra activities you do during the tour, so some excursions exceed $1,000.

Are there cheap Grand Canyon helicopter tours?

Flying over the Grand Canyon is a memorable and worthwhile experience, so if you have a limited budget, I suggest an airplane tour. This is a cheaper option, but the views are just as beautiful. You can see how we organized our budget to travel along the West Coast in 10 days to see how we managed to do a Grand Canyon airplane tour without splashing out.

Should I book my Grand Canyon helicopter tour in advance?

Yes! If you’re going to be traveling in the summer, I recommend booking your Grand Canyon helicopter ride at least one month in advance. We traveled in August and had to carefully plan our itinerary to get to the Grand Canyon on the particular day that had an available spot.

What should I bring on a Grand Canyon helicopter tour?

It’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants, as well as comfortable closed-toe shoes. Also, you’ll want to protect yourself from the strong desert sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Of course, don’t forget to bring your camera!

Is a Grand Canyon helicopter tour worth it?

Yes! There is nothing quite like soaring over such a massive natural structure. Flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter with panoramic windows helps you see all the crevasses, gorges, and walls of the canyon. Plus, the views are much better than they are from the ground, where people are often crowding the outlooks.

I hope you feel better prepared to find the best Grand Canyon helicopter tour for your budget, preferences, and travel dates. If you have any other questions, leave them below, and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Enjoy your Grand Canyon flight !

Hi Chris, This part of the country is my absolute favorite. I think you’ll like our guide on taking a road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon ; it’ll give you some ideas for your itinerary!

Hello! Thank you for posting and sharing your experience. On the Helicopter and/or Airplane tour, is the ‘Seat Assignment’ a concern? My family (wife, 3 kids and I) had the Heli [tour] experience at the Canadian Rocky Mountain. One kid sat in the front with the Pilot. The rest sat in the back BUT, we’re face-2-face: 2 facing front, 2 facing back. The ones facing back did NOT get to see what the ‘frontal’ passengers did, bad experience. This time, it’ll be just my wife and I. We prefer Heli tour. What is your suggestion. Thank you in advanced. Unggit & Piyanut – Buffalo, NY

At the airplane tours, everyone gets the same stunning views. On the helicopter tour, you can pay to have a front seat next to the pilot. We paid for that in our last helicopter tour to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas last month and it was worthy!

But I think you will enjoy the tour even if you don’t get that seat since no one in the helicopter is facing back. Are you taking the tour from the Grand Canyon South Rim terminal or from Las Vegas? I can recommend you which is the one I have like the most so far!

' src=

Best experience in my life. I took the helicopter tour from Grand Canyon South Rim. Next time I will do the landing tour from West Rim.

' src=

I am planning to do the landing tour too. I hope next month! But I will do it from Las Vegas!

Thank you very much for recommend those tours. I spent only one day in Las Vegas and decided to take the Grand Celebration tour thanks to your post. It was amazing. I am so glad I found you blog!

Hi Sylviana,
