Copied to Clipboard

Sometimes the best way to learn something new — or discover history that’s hidden in plain sight — is to explore on your own.

Take advantage of these self-guided driving and walking tours of Greater Philadelphia that put you in control of when and how you explore top attractions and important historical sites.

Great for solo excursions or small groups, these self-guided explorations (many of which are free!) are an excellent way to uncover interesting facts about Philadelphia — and encounter surprises along the way.

Philly’s self-guided tours also span a wide range of interests. Get an immersive history lesson on the nation’s Founding Fathers; take your time exploring significant stops along the Underground Railroad; learn the story behind the city’s jaw-dropping architecture; or indulge in a curated culinary journey sampling the city’s most quintessential foods.

Want a little more interactivity? Some experiences offer scavenger hunts that let you upload photos of their finds, while others include augmented reality apps that transform the world in front of your eyes.

Check out our guide below for a list of great self-guided walking and driving tours to help you explore Philadelphia and the Countryside on your own.

History: Black History

7th ward legacy reclaimed self-guided tours.

The art and history experience Legacy Reclaimed: A 7th Ward Tribute honors the lives — and lesser-known history — of 19th-century Black residents of Philadelphia’s old 7th Ward. An important part of the Underground Railroad and Great Migration, the 7th Ward was the former home to 15,000 Black residents including Octavius V. Catto and W.EB. Du Bois. Legacy Reclaimed ’s self-guided tour brochure takes you to two dozen historically significant homes, landmarks and institutions throughout what is now known as Society Hill and Washington Square West .

Anti-Slavery Walking Tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Philadelphians were heavily involved in the abolitionist movement, and the Underground Railroad passed through the city, helping enslaved people find freedom here and north into Canada. Two free audio tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer guide people through Old City and Society Hill and around Northwest Philadelphia to visit anti-slavery landmarks like Congo Square (now Washington Square ), a convening space and burial ground for the Black community; and Germantown’s Johnson House Historic Site , which served as an Underground Railroad stop and may have even hosted Harriet Tubman.

Black History Historical Marker Tour from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Exterior of the Paul Robeson House in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s history is rich with important moments involving the Black community , many of which aren’t tied to a specific attraction. Fortunately, historical markers around the city help preserve these legacies. This map from The Philadelphia Inquirer can help you wind your way through the city and learn more about 19th- and 20th-century painter Henry Ossawa Tanner; the Christian Street YMCA, where a young Wilt Chamberlain got his start; and Laura Wheeler Waring, who painted portraits of W.E.B. DuBois and Marian Anderson.

Where: Various locations including the Paul Robeson House, 4951 Walnut Street

Sweet Chariot: The Long Journey Through Time

Part walking tour, part high-tech scavenger hunt, Sweet Chariot empowers visitors to uncover history that is often hidden in plain sight. Using a map and a smartphone app, visitors search for murals, plaques and other landmarks to unlock immersive videos and clues as they trace hidden stories of the Black struggle for freedom in Philadelphia. The experience begins in Washington Square and ultimately leads to the final resting place of Amelia Brown, who was uncovered in an 18th-century graveyard during a construction project in 2013.

Philadelphia was the site of the country’s first major demonstration for LGBTQ+ rights, the Annual Reminders , in 1965. But Philly’s history of equality activism long predates that and continues today, as evidenced by the city’s public art, historical markers and notable LGBTQ+ institutions that honor people and events that paved the way. This self-guided LGBTQ+ history tour from The Philadelphia Inquirer visits many of these sites, including the historic marker for John Fryer, who helped declassify homosexuality as a mental illness, and Giovanni’s Room, the country’s longest-running LGBTQ+ bookstore.

“Great historical easy walk for all. The directions and app were easy to use. I love the ability to take your time to stop and shop/eat and pick back up easily since it not a group with a guide.”

“The tour of New Haven was amazing! Enough detail to keep us interested but not too much to be boring. Plus the app functionality and syncing with location made for a seamless experience. This was better than booking a personal tour because we could pause it anytime we needed more time to explore on our own. Highly recommended!!”

Frequently asked questions.

GuruWalk is an international community for pay-what-you-please walking tours that connects tourists with tour guides all around the world. Our mission is for you to be able to enjoy this type of tour in any place you can imagine.

The GuruWalk community is formed by "gurus" (local guides) who are open, attentive, fun people with great knowledge of the city and who will be your friends wherever you travel.

The other part of the community are the "walkers," or tourist who opt for this type of tour over the more traditional tours, who enjoy unforgettable experiences and most importantly, love to travel around the world doing guruwalks.

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city.

The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost. While becoming a part of the community, making a booking, or setting up a tour on the platform is 100% free, the traveler has to pay the guide at the end of the tour based on his experience. This concept is commonly referred to as a pay-what-you-please walking tour, because it empowers the client to pay based on their satisfaction with the tour and encourages the guide to always do their best.

At GuruWalk, we call them "guruwalks" so our walkers don’t get confused with the concept. Our intention is for them to understand the concept better and then give a fair remuneration to their Guru, so that we can all keep enjoying this type of tour all across the world.

Look for the city that you want to visit and then choose from all the guruwalks that are available, the different themed experiences, the different neighborhood and the various types of activities to find the best option for you. Book the tour for free through the online platform, receive the email confirmation with all the info and you’re ready to go!

All that’s left to do is show up to the guruwalk to enjoy and learn about other cultures in a fun and entertaining way. Don’t forget to tip your guru’s good work and have a great time.

The star question that the walkers always ask! You choose how much to give, you can take into consideration how satisfied you were with the tour and how much you can afford.

Our gurus are the best tour guides who are at it day after day, who are creating fun and entertaining tours so you can get to know the most important aspects of a city, they know a lot about the city you’re visiting and they’ll help you to have the trip of a lifetime.

This is why most walkers on GuruWalk generally give between 10 o 20€ per person, but as we said, you can choose to give more or less depending on your experience.

If you’d like to join our community of international gurus, all you have to do is click the link here. We’re waiting to get to know you!

ITALIAN GUIDED WALKING TOURS OPERATED BY LOCALS

Welcome to walk about italy: experts in walking tours.

I’m Gianni Stanghellini, owner and guide at Walk About Italy. I am a Ph.D. geologist with over two decades of experience in the realm of guided walking tours in Italy. For the past 22 years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting remarkable journeys through this enchanting country. Hailing from Siena, a captivating medieval town nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, I remain firmly rooted here. The allure of this exquisite place has held me steadfast, and it’s from here that I continue to operate and shape unforgettable experiences.

Walk About Italy: Exploring Tuscany and Beyond

At Walk About Italy, our focus is on select regions, ensuring the pinnacle of Italy’s guided walking tours: Tuscany , the Amalfi Coast , Sicily , Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche , the Cinque Terre , Italian Alps & Dolomites and The Italian Lakes These seven destinations embody the rich tapestry of Italian beauty, each unique and awe-inspiring in its own right, beckoning to be explored.

A Boutique Enterprise Embracing Local Essence

Central to our ethos, we exclusively enlist local guides and drivers. Moreover, we gravitate toward intimate, family-owned restaurants and venture to small farms, offering you the opportunity to engage with the very heart of Italy’s agrarian heritage. Our commitment to fostering authentic connections means we facilitate interactions with locals at every turn.

In the words of G.K. Chesterton, “ The traveler sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see. ” Here at Walk About Italy, we invite you to transcend the role of a mere tourist, and instead, become an astute traveler, delving into the true essence of Italy.

WALK ABOUT ITALY TOURS

Amalfi Coast Wonders

Walk the paths of the Amalfi Coast including Naples , the  Vesuvius and Pompeii , with stunning views and amazing food. You will stay at charming hotels. Walk from village to village between,  Amalfi, Vietri, Ravello .

The Secret Side of Sicily

From the charming islet of Ortigia  to the  Vendicari natural reserve . From the baroque pearl of  Noto  to the Byzantine of  Pantalica.  Then we transfer to the Aeolian  Island of Lipari  with its stunning panoramas on the archipelagos.

Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche Marvels

Umbria & Le Marche are really off-the-beaten-path. Although Assisi is well known because of Saint Francis, the area remains very genuine. Food and wines are superb here. The tour starts in the medieval town of Orvieto, one hour train ride from Rome. Continues to the small towns of Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna and ends up in the Le Marche green countryside of Urbino, on the Adriatic sea.

CINQUE TERRE & PORTOFINO off-the-beaten-path

Italian alps & dolomites: the easy way.

Have you always dreamt of walking the Italian Alps and the Dolomites but you didn’t feel fit enough for it? We have planned the trip for you. Our hikes are very doable. No big climbs. No fear of heights on our walks. But a lot of fun though.

ROMANTIC ITALIAN LAKES

Step into romance, wander through enchanting landscapes, and embrace the allure of our Romantic Italian Lakes Walking Tour – where every step is a dance and every view a love letter to the heart of Italy

Cinque Terre September 2023 This Cinque Terre 7 day walking tour was absolutely amazing! It’s worth every cent. Amazing walks, breathtaking scenery, scrumptious Italian food and wine. So well organized! This was my 5th trip with Walk About Italy.

Tuscany has my heart! This was a trip dreams are made of. I have always wanted to see Tuscany but I am not into touristy type trips. I was a little skeptical of this tour but booked it anyway. I was blown away….It exceeded my expectations. Our guides Daniele and Chiara were a JOY to be with. They shared their countryside with us and they shared themselves. Beautiful souls. For me the hiking was wonderful and I would have done more…but beware this is definitely more of a hiking than walking tour. The food was wonderful and the wine amazing! I highly recommend. I can’t wait to try another tour.

A fantastic, boutique walking tour. Ermes and Gianni were great guides who were very accommodating and supportive; Hotels were in great location, clean and friendly staff. Breakfast was great. Great food. The ability to accommodate for individuals food requirements was great. Ermes and Gianni were fantastic guides. They complemented each other with their guiding and jokes etc. We would recommend this tour to others.

I recently embarked on a captivating tour through the picturesque regions of Umbria and the Marche in Italy. Our itinerary included enchanting stops in Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, Urbino, and the stunning Adriatic coastline. Our experienced guides, Federico and Roberto, made the journey even more engaging. Gianni, the owner of Walk About Italy, joined our group for three days, infusing a personal touch into the experience. This adventure was genuinely extraordinary, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Walking vs hiking vs trekking.

Outline of a running shoe with a red strip on the side

Our walking trips will take you on defined tracks and over smooth surfaces – think the grasslands of northern Thailand, rice paddies in Mai Chau, and New Zealand's idyllic Queen Charlotte Track. There’s no need for fitness preparation or specialized equipment; just you, your comfortable walking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. And we promise there’s not a base camp in sight.

Outline of a hiking shoe with red patch at the top

Make your way up magnificent mountains, through concentrated bushland, and across rugged, countryside trails on our range of leader-led hiking trips. Harder and longer than a walk but less physically demanding than a trek, hikes are the perfect in-between for those who still want to thoroughly explore the great outdoors without all the fuss of proper equipment.

An outline of a person carrying a backpack

Treks are often in remote destinations where the trails are barely visible, and the terrain makes it harder to traverse without specialized equipment. These treks range from tackling Kilimanjaro to testing your limits at Everest Base Camp and generally feature high altitudes and overnight stops with basic accommodation. Yep, say goodbye to showers and hello to unforgettable memories.

What is the range of walking & trekking holidays available?

Our walking & trekking tours span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day challenges in high mountains. We offer a range of tours in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the Americas, as well as plenty of classic hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

How safe are walking & trekking holidays?

The safety of our clients (you), staff (us), and all the people around us (our local friends and other trekkers) is our highest priority. This means we don't cut corners. Ever. All our leaders are adequately qualified, experienced, and insured so you don't need to worry about a thing. We only hike on well-settled trails and we follow local rules. Always. If the local authorities tell us it’s not advisable to walk certain trails then we won’t. If the weather is not looking good, we'll change our plans. If the trail is too busy, we'll turn around and hike elsewhere. It's as simple as that. We're all about staying safe, enjoying the best trails possible, and being flexible to achieve the best hiking experience for you.

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

What level of comfort can I expect on a walking & trekking holiday?

Most of our walking & trekking holidays are in the Intrepid Original standard, staying in small, authentic, and atmospheric 2–3-star hotels, using public transport where possible, and including all breakfasts, as well as some dinners and lunches depending on the travel destination. However, some of the trips are in the Intrepid Basix style – in most cases, these are trips featuring more remote itineraries such as in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, or Morocco. We then stay in either local guesthouses (or so-called teahouses in the Himalayas), or we camp. We often use private transfers on these trips too, as public transport options may not be available. Camping can be quite comfortable with spacious tents, clean water available, and where possible, a toilet tent set up. But we also want to make the experience as authentic as possible so you can always opt to camp under the stars.

How sustainable are walking & hiking trips?

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, and walking & trekking holidays are no different. In fact, spending most of the time on your feet, scaling local trailheads is probably as sustainable as it gets. We also try to use public transport as much as possible and contract only small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. We also align our itineraries with local standards and follow all rules set up by local authorities. The hikes we choose are mostly a combination of the iconic trails (aka ones you don't want to miss) and the lesser-known ones, ensuring there's a little bit of everything.

What to pack for walking & hiking trip?

All itineraries feature a packing list on the 'Essential Trip Information' document. Please read it carefully as it may contain trip-specific items you must bring. On a higher level, you always need to pack a backpack/day bag to accompany you on your daily walks, comfortable walking shoes or boots (depending on the trip), good trekking clothing (combination of lightweight and quick drying shorts, pants, short and long sleeve shirts), extra warm layers (sometimes even a down jacket) and waterproof gear. We also highly recommend bringing walking poles as these are very useful on steep ascents and long descents.

Read more about what to pack your walking & trekking trip

Will I be required to carry my own luggage?

The short answer is no. Your main luggage is transported for you on point-to-point itineraries (often by porters, therefore it should be packed in a soft/duffle bag) and your luggage stays in your accommodation for all centre-based itineraries. However, you'll need to bring a small bag/backpack (around 25-30 litre capacity) to carry around all of your essentials (water, snacks, extra layer, waterproofs) when you're on the move.

Do I need any special insurance?

You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won't need any special insurance to cover technical activities. However, to be 100% certain your cover is adequate for the trip you're doing, we suggest you talk to an insurer and present the planned itinerary of your chosen trip.

How big are the group sizes?

The maximum group size is 12 people on the majority of walking & trekking trips, however, some itineraries may go up to 16 people. But, on average, there are 7-10 people on each departure.

Are walking & hiking holidays suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! In fact, most of our customers are travelling solo, and there is no extra fee for doing so. One thing to note is that if are travelling solo, you'll be room-sharing with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, please speak to your booking agent as we're often able to accommodate this at an extra fee.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

The minimum age on our walking & trekking holidays is predominantly 15 (on some itineraries we can accept a lower age – sometimes even 12, so please enquire at the time of booking). But there is no maximum age limit. We’ll accept everyone who’s keen and physically ready for the challenge (no screening form needed – we trust your own judgement), regardless of age. After all, age is really only a state of mind, right?

Will I get altitude sickness?

On some of our hikes you will encounter high altitudes. When climbing above 2,800 metres (9,200 feet), it is common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude, regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!

There’s no real way to tell how your body will react to the rigours of altitude trekking, so it is important that you monitor your condition and discuss any prevailing symptoms with your guide. If you have any pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by high altitudes, be sure to get them checked out by a doctor before you leave.

But above all, try not to worry, most of our travellers shake off the effects of altitude pretty quickly and enjoy a safe and rewarding trek.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

What People Are Saying

Yelp review.

The Freedom Trail is one of the iconic touristy things to do in Boston, and there's a reason for that. I did the full trail many, many years ago but decided to go with this shorter, more compact trail with our family. The 1.5 hour length is the right duration for kids, and our guide, Jeremiah Poope (his actual last name!), kept it interesting the entire time. He has been a tour guide in Boston for many years, and he had a ton of interesting stories and facts beyond the typical revolutionary war factoids.

We had a wonderful time and your guides were wonderful. They were energetic, informed, and brought history to life. Thank you once again!

TripAdvisor Review

We only had 1 day to explore downtown Boston, and this tour was a great way to see several different sites, learn about history, and get a bit of walking in. We were a few minutes late for the start of the 1pm tour but easily able to catch up and join in.. Our tour guide was fantastic! One member of my group uses a wheelchair, and the guide was great about leading the WHOLE tour through accessible entrances to sites and to sidewalks with curb cuts so that all of us could participate without feeling singled out.

Great tour with Isaiah Thomas! Great local guide who was very engaging and a walking encyclopedia of Boston history. It was a nice 1.5 hr walking tour hitting most of the south end Freedom Trail points of interest. For the money, it’s hard to beat!

The Freedom Trail Walking tour presents full of historic knowledge and our guide, Parker, provides us the best experience for this amazing learning adventure. That is to say, in this tour you can also learn about the myth and the truth of the history we learned from our textbooks. I would recommend anyone who visit Boston and is interested in learning history or simply just want to listen to funny stories

Steve is Awesome!

My mom and I took a tour with Steve today and it was fantastic! Steve is such a great guide and has a ton of knowledge of the city. It was so fun to roam through the historic area with him. He knows everyone too so it’s awesome to have that local feel as your cruising through the streets and people wave “Hi”. I would highly recommend taking his tour.

Kay could not have been more adaptable, informative or kind. She shared so much info about Charleston with us - but perhaps more importantly, she was so fun! She pointed out things that were right out in the open that we never would have seen and educated us on so many Charleston specific facts. We will call Kay EVERY time we return to learn more and more about this fabulous city!

Walks of Italy started with a simple goal: giving outstanding tours of the Roman Colosseum.

15 years, 8 destinations and 50+ tours later, our philosophy remains the same: We believe the best way to travel is to take walks.

Every Italian destination has a story to tell—but you won't hear it on a tour bus! The only way to truly understand Italy is to meet people, hear stories, and dive deep… and that's exactly what we're all about at Walks of Italy. Even when it comes to iconic attractions like the Roman Colosseum and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, we strive to find new and better ways to discover them.

The Best 7 Shanghai Walking Tours

Shanghai is a city that is suitable for exploring on foot. You may already know that Shanghai is an international metropolis with some of the busiest avenues but you may not know that the memories and culture of the city are scattered in some quaint streets and alleys.

It is time to get out of the vehicles and get to know the city in the most down-to-earth way . Here, we have provided you with some good ideas to enjoy a Shanghai walking tour. Read on to discover how to experience the hidden beauty of Shanghai.

1. The Bund Culture Experience

The Bund is a 1.5-kilometer promenade alongside the Huangpu River. About 150 years ago, the Bund was the starting point of Shanghai's development and the architectural structures along it, both classic and modern, comprise a living museum that has recorded Shanghai's golden age.

Today, the Bund can be praised as an exotic building cluster . Walking along the Bund, you can appreciate the 52 ancient buildings in various architectural styles, including British neoclassical, Gothic, baroque, and East Indian styles.

If you are interested in the history of old Shanghai and the culture behind the buildings, you may go on an in-depth Bund culture discovery tour with us. You will follow your guide to visit interesting places, such as to see the beautiful mosaic ceiling in Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, the museum in Astor House Hotel, and the movie poster gallery in the Peace Hotel. Your guide will also tell you stories about the Bund, which are only known by local experts.

To enjoy the Bund culture, see our Shanghai in Progress experience.

2. Former Jewish Settlement Walking Tour

During World War II, Shanghai was a "Noah's Ark" receiving nearly 30,000 Jewish refugees from Europe who had fled Nazi massacres and persecution. The Jews then set up their home in Shanghai and built their churches, schools, hospitals, and parks. At present, there are about 48 Jewish historical sites in Shanghai .

If you want to learn more about this history, you may visit Hongkou District , which used to be the settlement for Jews. Follow your guide to discover their meeting halls, a newspaper office, a memorial museum, and more original buildings that stood during WWII.

See our Former Jewish Settlement Walking Tour to unfold the memories of that special time.

3. Former French Concession Walking Tour

The Former French Concession (FFC) is one of the top attractions for Shanghai visitors due to its historical buildings and beautiful streets.

Walking along some of the streets in the FFC, you may find yourself touring some European countries. A typical feature of the FFC is the plane tree avenues , which are incomparable walking paths. You may find lines of elegant old houses in different architectural styles. During your visit, don't skip the cafés, bars, and restaurants, or miss the boutiques and antiques shops.

Recommended Streets to Admire Old Shanghai Residences

  • Yuyuan Road: This used to be the place of residence for many influential Chinese men and women. Walk around and listen to their stories.
  • Xinhua Road: The road is sheltered by plane trees and preserves over 100 garden-like villas. From the structured British style to the romantic French style, you can find many pretty houses along the road.
  • Sinan Road: This road has collected almost all the residential styles of old Shanghai. There are interesting places to check, such as an antique furniture café and a Starbucks in an old mansion.

If you are traveling with us, your tour guide will lead you for a 2-hour walking tour starting from a historic hotel to the art street of Tianzifang. Check out our French Concession Walking Tour for more information.

4. Wander Along Shanghai Old Street

If you want to know what Shanghai used to be like 100 years ago, take a walk around Shanghai Old Street , which is 1 kilometer south of the Bund. There are no broad avenues or streams of traffic, just scruffy buildings and the hustle and bustle of the residents.

Although there are a lot of people there, most of them are seniors who have stayed there for decades and refuse to leave because they consider it to be their home. You seldom see young people there, besides other visitors, because there is nothing there but the memories of the city .

Try to slow your pace to discover more interesting things. You might find a kind of manual sewing machine or some special "boxes" in which you can watch Chinese shadow puppetry by putting your head into one.

5. Discover Shanghai's Alleyways

It is easy to find a broad avenue or a bustling shopping street in Shanghai but, if you'd like to discover the authentic lifestyle of the local people, you should go into some small alleys .

The alleys in Upper Ruijin 2nd Road are a good place to walk around and see the local people's daily lives. There are no skyscrapers, luxury villas, or well-decorated shops and stores, just nostalgic houses built with brownish-red bricks . The narrow alleys are just wide enough for two cars to pass through, and you should watch your head when going upstairs in an old house.

A good idea is to arrive there early in the morning and enjoy your breakfast with the locals . Eating "Four Guardians", which means four kinds of local snacks, in a historical restaurant is recommended.

See the top dishes in Shanghai you should try .

6. Lujiazui Modern Shanghai City Walk

Lujiazui faces the Bund across the Huangpu River but the view is totally different in two places. With some of the tallest skyscrapers in China, Lujiazui represents the rapid development of Shanghai. It is also where many Hollywood movies have been filmed , such as Skyfall , Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen , and Mission: Impossible III .

You can walk around Lujiazui and finish your visit by ascending Shanghai Tower , which provides a breathtaking bird's-eye view across Shanghai.

7. Go Shopping in Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road was the earliest commercial street built after Shanghai opened its port. If you have more time after visiting the Bund, taking a detour to Nanjing Road is a good option. Besides famous brand stores and shopping malls, the well-designed "golden belt" in the road is also worth a visit.

If you are not interested in those resplendent malls and shops, you may travel with a local guide and visit some famous traditional stores inherited from old Shanghai, such as:

  • Zhen Lao Da Fang: This store is believed to cook the best fresh meat mooncakes.
  • Shao Wan Sheng: It specializes in creating wine-preserved food.
  • Zhang Xiao Quan: This is a popular scissor-maker and was founded about 400 years ago.

Start your uncanny journey at Heritage Park Row, where your guide will meet you. Drop into three chilling locations over the space of 1.5 hours, including La Casa de Estudillo (one of the city’s oldest buildings) and Whaley House Museum. Plus El Campo Santo Cemetery, where the spirits go to play.

We’d classify this as one of the scariest tours in San Diego. It’s only suitable for teens and adults because of the nature of the stories told. Disturbing, right?

Start things off at Headquarters at Seaport to learn about the Old Police Headquarters; you’ll even get to pop your head into the cells. Check out USS Midway Museum to hear about the story behind the military ship.

Karlstrom and garcia break meeting records in podebrady.

Facebook

Perseus Karlstrom wins the men's 20km at Podebrady Walking (© Jan Houska / Czech Athletic Federation)

March winds were harsh on both Podebrady Walking winners, but April has brought pure joy.

Perseus Karlstrom and Kimberly Garcia were forced to drop out of World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold races last month, but bounced back to triumph in the Czech spa town east of Prague on Saturday (6).

Garcia took on a hot race in every sense of the word. The thermometer rose to 23°C in a 20km race that still provided a course record for the double world champion from Peru.

In fact, the first three broke the previous mark set by Antonella Palmisano in 2021.

This time, the Olympic gold medallist had to give way at 16km as Garcia went through the gears. It seemed for a moment the Italian was destined to take a consolation second place. But Ecuador’s Glenda Morejon had other ideas, turning a two seconds disadvantage into a three-second lead going into the bell lap that decided the order.

All three were comfortably under 1:28:00. Garcia’s new Podebrady mark was a heartening 1:27:08.

Behind them were four PBs in the top 10 to belie conditions.

From the gun, 20-plus athletes went through the first kilometre in a comfortable 4:30, comfortable that is for the calibre of walker at the front.

By the end of the second lap, that throng was already thinning as the pace picked up. In fact, the leading nine had creviced open a small gap at 3km (13:16), with another significant group headed by France’s Clemence Beretta right behind.

The pace had steadied by the next time round, but it still found past winner Eleonora Giorgi just about hanging on.

The leaders were forced to go the long way round, right and left, when passing four lapped walkers stretched across the course. Even so, quarter distance was reached in 22:06, and the leaders were down to six although Magaly Bonilla from Ecuador was desperately trying to stay in touch.

It was Italy versus south and central America by lap eight (35:21) – and the rest playing catch-up, with double world silver medallist Katarzyna Zdzieblo back in 13th already 34 seconds behind, and Beretta passed by two teammates mixing it with a second group from South America.

At halfway in 44:06, Bonilla and Giorgi were again feeling the pace, especially with a last circuit of 4:21.

The gloves were definitely off one lap later. The front four clocked 4:18, and that did for Giorgi, Bonilla and Brazilian Viviane Lyra.

The next casualty was surprisingly Alegna Gonzalez from Mexico, with Garcia biding her time. That was because the pink-vested Morejon had already made a break for home, seven laps before the finish.

But the gap was a mere second, and Garcia underlined her class as she refused to give way.

At three-quarters distance (65:39) it was 22 seconds to a distant Gonzalez walking solo, so barring disaster the podium was already filled.

As the leading trio completed 16km with a 4:17 lap, it was Garcia’s turn to put the hammer down.

As the day got hotter, so did the pace. The next lap was a second quicker but it found Palmisano and Morejon nine seconds back.

The leader sailed on imperiously over the next kilometre, and the battle for second also looked settled. Palmisano got a vital three seconds over the Ecuadorean, and that appeared to be that in deciding first, second, third.

However, Morejon would not be denied and lit the afterburners to claw back the deficit and finish a fine second.

There were PBs for Lyra and Bonilla in fifth and sixth behind Gonzalez, who duelled to the line, as well as Paula Torres from Ecuador who chopped a massive 3:15 off her previous mark.

France’s Pauline Stey, ninth, and Camille Moutard, 11th, also had reasons to be cheerful as they re-wrote personal records going under 1:30:00 for the first time.

“I liked the circuit very much and was happy to set the record,” said Garcia. “Everything is geared to the Olympics and the preparation is going well.”

Win No.4 for Karlstrom

Unlike the women, the leading group of 14 men had already creviced a small gap after the first 1km lap, covered in 3:54.

The pace eased to a more comfortable 4:03 at 2km, and 11:58, one lap later, suggested things were levelling out with real racing yet to come.

Mexico’s Jose Luis Doctor and Ricardo Ortiz were pushing at the front of a group of nine, but four others ominously including Sweden’s multiple world medallist Karlstrom were only a couple of seconds back.

The pace eased a little more, so that by 5km in 20:00 exactly a single file of 18 streamed through. Parity was almost retained at 7km, but that stretched elastic had whittled the group as it lost three off the back.

Olympic and world bronze medallist Evan Dunfee of Canada decided to give it a go at the front and clocked a three-second lead over former winners Francisco Fortunato of Italy, Caio Bonfim of Brazil and Christopher Linke of Germany, by eighth time round.

They in turn had the luxury of a gap to the leading chasers now passing in dribs and drabs.

Karlstrom then hit the accelerator to join the chasing three, and along with Linke and Dunfee they had left Bonfim and Fortunato in their wake at halfway (39:40).

Dunfee was just about in touch by 14km, but still four seconds behind the Swede, with Bonfim (55:25) now commanding third ahead of Fortunato (55:37). France's Gabriel Bordier was having the race of his life and chasing Fortunato.

A symmetrical 58:58 was Karlstrom’s clocking after 15km, with Dunfee staring at the leader’s distant back which was getting smaller all the time.

Bonfim was an isolated third, but Bordier had drawn level with Fortunato and both were another 30 seconds in arrears.

The race for top spot was over at 17km.

By then, Karlstrom was 30 seconds up on Dunfee, although Bonfim was enjoying a second wind and closing in on second place. In fact, there was only seven seconds in it at the bell, but it was enough and the order of the first three was decided.

Bordier was a plucky fourth, and last year’s winner Fortunato finished a tired sixth.

Behind them was a PB for his Italian teammate Andrea Cosi in 1:20:56, improving his previous best by an impressive 43 seconds.

The winner admitted he eased off the pedal despite clocking a meeting record of 1:18:22 to break the existing mark – his own, shared with Bonfim – by 32 seconds.

“I could see at 16km I had a lead, but I was worried my leg was tightening up and so I slowed down a little,” said Karlstrom, “but I was still pleased with my performance.”
