The founder of this site once said a very wise thing. Well, he actually said quite a few very wise things, but here’s one I go over and over pretty frequently: "There are two things you can't argue in film: comedy and eroticism. If something doesn't make you laugh, no one can tell you why it's funny, and it's difficult to reason someone out of an erection." That’s pretty funny in and of itself. Anyway, I’ve always respected Roger Ebert’s rule of comedy, which he articulated differently in various pieces over the course of his life, and which I distilled in my own mind as an instruction: If something’s funny, and you laugh at it a lot, you’ve gotta own it. (If you know me at all, you also know that I’ve got a laugh that’s kind of hard not to own—when I lose it, it’s pretty loud. I think Fox Searchlight bought “ Napoleon Dynamite ” at Sundance partially in the strength of my reaction to the steak-throwing joke.)

So here’s the breakdown: I laughed like a maniac at the Michael-Caine-impersonation reprise performed by comic actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon at the front end of “The Trip To Italy,” the followup (to call this a sequel is kind of special pleading, really) to “ The Trip .” The difference, by the way, being that in the prior film—both are distilled from somewhat longer television mini-series-es broadcast in Great Britain—the fellows gallivanted around the British countryside and in this picture they are in, you guessed it, Italy. To get back to the record, I also laughed like a maniac at the pictures end, in which Brydon and Coogan discuss various James Bonds in front of an appreciative audience of actors playing the publicist and teenage son of the characters played by Brydon and Coogan, who are lightly fictionalized versions of themselves. And I laughed consistently and appreciatively at many of the scenes in between, some of which depict the actors singing along to an Alanis Morrissette CD.

So if you go in for allusive British humor that builds slowly from dry to uproarious, as executed by two absolute masters of the form, “The Trip To Italy” will work for you, I believe. I also think the film, directed, like the prior one, by the astute Michael Winterbottom , is a somewhat smoother trip than the first. In that one, Coogan, who’s better known internationally than Brydon, was the focus, and the movie’s plot, such as it was, was hooked into his work and personal anxieties as he took a break from his Hollywood career just as it entered a pivotal moment. Here the focus is on Brydon, who gets a call from Hollywood, and also succumbs to a vacation flirtation that results in a pretty serious domestic misstep. Because the viewer is arguably less familiar with Brydon, the fiction is more convincing; we’re spared the potential distraction of trying to separate and/or combine the “real” person from the character he’s playing. Which leaves us more focus for the incredible-looking Italian meals the pair sample (these trips are foodie fodder for newspaper articles Brydon writes), and the impeccably delivered banter they exchange. It all looks scrumptious, which makes this movie a terribly refreshing one with which to close out the summer.

The Trip to Italy

The Trip to Italy

  • Two men, six meals in six different places on a road trip around Italy. Liguria, Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and ending in Capri.
  • Years after their successful restaurant review tour of Northern Britain, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are commissioned for a new tour in Italy. Once again, the two comedy buddies/rivals take the landscape as well as the cuisine of that country in a trip filled with witty repartee and personal insecurities. Along the way, their own professional and personal lives comes in as these slightly older men's friendship comes through. — Kenneth Chisholm ([email protected])
  • As Rob was the one who largely wrote their Northern England restaurant piece, the Observer asks him if he and Steve would do another restaurant tour piece for them, this time in Italy. What they decide is a week long trip north to south along the western coast ending in Sicily. Much like last time, they are joined by a wide array of celebrities in the form of their impersonations, from Michael Caine to Al Pacino to Hugh Grant , but also the spirit of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron as they touch on those places in the country associated with these two British writers of the Romantic period. Beyond the nature of the food, what ends up being the other primary difference between this trip and the Northern England trip is the role reversal between the two travelers, Steve who seems more grounded than he was last time, and Rob who seems the restless one this time. This reversal is partly due to what happened the last trip, and what has happened in their lives in the intervening time, but also unplanned experiences they have along the way on this trip providing certain opportunities, for Rob a potential part in an American movie and something that happens leading out of a sailing trip early in the week, and for Steve how he reacts to two people that unexpectedly join them for part of the trip, the second which results in a slight change of direction in the latter part of the week. — Huggo

Presented by IFC Films | United Kingdom | Aug 15th, 2014 | 108 MINS | NR

Michael Winterbottom’s largely improvised 2010 film, The Trip, took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon—or semifictionalized versions thereof—on a restaurant tour around northern England. In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewhetting our palates from the earlier film, the characters enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman’s vocal register, the artistic merits of “Jagged Little Pill,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels.

Winterbottom trains his camera to capture the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centered on the crackling chemistry between the two leads. The Trip to Italy effortlessly melds the brilliant comic interplay between Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, letting audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of family and career. The result is a biting portrait of modern-day masculinity.

Venice implements new access fees for day-trippers: What to know about the new system

The waterfront city is popular for Piazza San Marco, canals and bridges.

Peak summer travel season is fast approaching, and some cities abroad have already implemented fees in an attempt to protect popular destinations from potential damage from increased tourism.

Bustling European cities from Barcelona to Amsterdam that get flooded with tourists, especially at historical hotspots during the high season, have used tourist taxes to help raise revenue without taxing local citizens.

Now, the city of bridges is following in the footsteps of Spain, Greece and Germany, which have all utilized a similar fee-based approach, testing a new entry fee for any visitors who come to Venice just for the day.

PHOTO: Tourists visit San Marco Square on April 24, 2024 in Venice, Italy.

Earlier this year, the coastal city, known for it's lagoon, hand-blown glass and close proximity to the heart of Italy's popular Prosecco region, announced a new reservation system that would charge day trippers 5 euros to enter and enjoy Venice.

With nearly 40,000 visitors on average per day -- nearly double the city's population -- local authorities hope this move will help protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site from the influx of tourists.

Starting Thursday, travelers can download an app to pay and attain a QR code, which will be checked by inspectors to enter the city as a visitor. If someone traveling for the day in Venice is caught without the code, they may face a fine of up to 300 euros.

"It is not a revolution, but the first step of a path that regulates the access of daily visitors. An experiment that aims to improve the liveability of the city, who lives there and who works there. We will carry it forward with great humility and with the awareness that there may be problems," Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said in a statement on X regarding the announcement.

"The margins of error are wide, but we are ready, with humility and courage, to make all the changes that will serve to improve the procedure. Venice is the first city in the world to implement this path, which can be an example for other fragile and delicate cities that must be safeguarded," he continued.

Simone Venturini, Venice city councilor for tourism, told ABC News that the smart control center is within the most important part of the city -- Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark's Square.

"Authorities will use the new QR codes, plus cell phone data and the roughly 700 cameras around Venice to track and potentially regulate visitors," he explained. "We are switching to action after 60 years of only debate... our ultimate goal is to find a new balance between the needs of the residents and the needs of tourists."

Venturini told ABC News local officials had "a lot of discussion" with leaders in other cities who have worked to combat overtourism, including Amsterdam, Barcelona and Kyoto.

"We are talking together just to find the solution," he said.

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

Katharine McPhee on gummy bears, Kris Jenner, and what travel has taught her about perspective

We caught up with the singer, songwriter, and actress to talk about all things travel..

Katharine McPhee in Italy.

Singer, songwriter, and actress Katharine McPhee , who in 2006 was runner-up on the fifth season of “American Idol,” has toured the world extensively in the past nearly two decades. So when asked about where she would like to travel most, she replied — emphatically — “straight to my bed and home and not leave for a week.” But for now, she is on a national tour with her husband, composer and music producer/industry executive David Foster, that makes stops at the Providence Performing Arts Center on May 12, The Cabot in Beverly on May 14, and The Music Hall in Portsmouth, N.H., on May 15. “I haven’t really toured in this part of the country too much, so I am looking forward to it,” she said in a recent phone call. “I love being in different parts of the country and seeing how different the audiences are — and often being surprised.” McPhee, 40, said that while there are “challenging” aspects to being on tour with one’s spouse, she and Foster, 74, with whom she shares a 3-year-old son, Rennie, “get on great.” Having said that, she added that coming off of the “An Intimate Evening with David Foster & Katharine McPhee” tour, they both enjoy their “down time … enjoying basic things like cooking a meal and watching TV together.” McPhee, who attended the Boston Conservatory (now Boston Conservatory at Berklee) for three semesters and who in 2018 made her Broadway debut starring as Jenna in the musical “Waitress,” said that the current show features a variety of musical genres, a fair amount of storytelling, and even some occasional bickering. “It’s a pretty spontaneous evening,” she said. “And it’s a really good time.” We caught up with the Los Angeles native, who still calls LA home, to talk about all things travel.

If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go? I travel so much these days that I would travel straight to my bed and home and not leave for a week.

Do you prefer booking trips through a travel agent or on your own? I prefer booking through a travel agent. It’s very overwhelming looking at flights.

Thoughts on an “unplugged” vacation? It’s a good idea in theory, I guess. But I’ve never tried it. I like to know what’s happening in the world and with my loved ones.

What has been your worst vacation experience? A couple years ago on Christmas Day, traveling to Hawaii with my husband, 10-month-old, my mom, and [a] friend, the flight was delayed — but they had already put everyone on the bus to go to a different terminal and then ended up not having an actual gate so they put us on this bus and went clear across to the other side to go to a terminal where we had to stand on the tarmac for more than an hour. It was very cold and there were no bathrooms, no food … not how we wanted to spend Christmas. But we were able to find some humor in it and laugh a bit. Oh, and then once we did get on a flight and finally got Rennie to sleep, David got up to get something out of the overhead compartment, and when he closed it, he woke up our son. He was awake for the rest of the flight.

What is your favorite childhood travel memory? Going skiing with my mom, dad, and sister. Skiing takes a lot of effort — especially with kids. But it’s such a gift to have something to do all together. Having a child now I appreciate it so much more. We would mostly go to Mammoth and make a real road trip out of it. I remember stopping in a town called Bishop and always going to the same bakery every time. Great memories.

Do you vacation to relax, to learn, or for the adventure of it all? Typically, I vacation to relax and see and experience some culture and eat great food.

What book do you plan on bringing with you to read on your next vacation? ”Elon Musk,” a biography written by Walter Isaacson. I’m a fan of his [Isaacson’s] storytelling in previous biographies.

If you could travel with one famous person/celebrity, who would it be? Kris Jenner. She seems like a blast.

What is the best gift to give a traveler? RIMOWA lightweight suitcases. They are the best.

What is your go-to snack for a flight or a road trip? Not specific for me. I like all the fun junk like gummy bears and chips.

What is the coolest souvenir you’ve picked up on a vacation? Any piece of jewelry I love because it reminds of me where I was.

What is your favorite app/website for travel? Abercrombie & Kent.

What has travel taught you? That your worries and life are so small in comparison to the whole world. Your life holds the same value as anyone else’s, so don’t sweat the small stuff. And you can also go somewhere and start over if you wanted.

What is your best travel tip? Pack light. Plan out your looks for each day.
