Hunting trips: Alaska

About hunting in United States

The United States is a huge country with diverse terrain, almost two dozen species of big game, and a wide variety of waterfowl, small game, and upland birds. There are few places in the world more exciting and challenging to hunt. From the snowy peaks of the northern Rockies to the deserts of the Southwest to the hardwood forests of the East and Midwest, the wide variety of landscapes provide a breathtaking array of hunting experiences for a plentiful selection of game animals. Whether you desire pronghorn, mountain goat, moose, white-tailed deer, bighorn sheep, black bear, mule deer, elk, or mountain lion, each offers a different adventure. Because hunting in the USA is managed on a state-by-state basis and the game and terrain is so varied, it’s easy to find a trip perfect for your skill level, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hunter. From stand hunting for whitetails to spot-and-stalk hunting for elk to pursuing mountain lions over a pack of hounds, there is something for every hunter in the vast forests, plains, and mountains of the United States.

What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

Visas, laws, and regulations.

The United States requires a visa for entry, but citizens or nationals Canada and Bermuda, as well as of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program, are exempt from the requirement if they are traveling to the United States for 90 days or less. Find the list of countries eligible for the visa waiver here .

Travelers must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months from their planned departure from the USA, and those using the Visa Waiver Program must have an e-passport.

Importing Firearms

Visiting hunters who are not citizens or legal residents of the United States are required to obtain a federal permit for their firearms and ammunition in advance of their arrival through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and firearms (ATF). You will need to obtain and complete ATF Form 6NIA (5330.3D Application/Permit for Temporary Importation of Firearms and Ammunition by Nonimmigrant Aliens) to apply for the ATF permit. Contact ATF's Firearms and Explosives Import office with questions at [email protected] .

Licenses and Tags

All states in the United States require hunters to have a state-issued hunting license to hunt within the borders of that state. In many cases an additional permit for the specific animal, or “tag,” is also required. In many states, a valid hunting license from your home country will allow you to purchase the required hunting license; in some states, however, you may be required to prove that you have completed a hunter education course in order to buy a license. If you are hunting migratory birds, including ducks and doves, you will also be required to purchase a Federal Migratory Bird Stamp. Your outfitter will provide you with details of what licenses and tags are required for your specific hunt and how to purchase them.

Upon arrival

Upon arrival into the United States you will go through passport control then proceed on to collect your bags and firearms for customs inspection. You re-check your bags with your airline for your next flight and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) official will check your firearm, then escort it to your plane. TSA regulations require that firearms must be transported unloaded in a hard-sided, locked case, and ammunition must be checked in a separate bag. Certain airlines may have additional restrictions.

Wildlife management in the United States is handled on a state-by-state basis. Each state has its own hunting rules and regulations, and even within a particular state, hunting styles as well as gear and clothing may differ widely. Most outfitters can be relied upon to provide a list of recommended gear and clothing, as well as suggestions for firearm types and calibers. Stand hunts, for example, often call for heavy, warm clothing, while hunters venturing to the mountains or taking on strenuous spot-and-stalk hunts should dress in layers. Comfortable boots appropriate to the terrain are a must for any hunt. Some states require hunters to wear a fluorescent orange hat, vest, or sometimes both. Because enforcement of hunting regulations is taken very seriously in the United States, it’s a good idea to obtain a copy of the state regulations where you will be hunting and familiarize yourself with them. Look for these regulations on the website of the fish and game agency in the state you plan to hunt.

After the hunt

Tipping is generally expected and appreciated on most hunts in the USA. Tips generally range from 5 to 15 percent of the total hunt cost.

Your outfitter should be able to recommend local taxidermists and meat processors, but these services are not included in the hunt cost. Discuss these aspects with your outfitter before arrival. Local taxidermists can prepare and pack trophies to your specifications, but it will be up to you to check legalities and arrange transport and shipment of the trophies to your home.

Hunting trips: White-tailed deer

  • Elk Wyoming There's not much more exciting than being in the woods during the elk rut. Being in the presence of bugling bull elk will get any hunter's heart pumping. This episode of Bush TV will do just that!
  • Alaska Wolf Not your every day footage folks! A young wolf poking around in brown bear territory. Similar in size and behaviour (being social creatures), humans and wolves have always competed for food and territory.
  • Bison You wouldn't want to get between these tow fighting Bison!
  • Bighorn Sheep With Ewes in estrus, Bighorn Sheep Rams become very worked up and the Mating Dance ensues. Few people get to see this ritual up close.

  • Wild Turkey The wild turkey is a favorite pursuit of many hunter's dreams. The wiley and elusive gobblers can test the most experienced and patient sportsmen. But in some cases their desire to mate and their bravado overpower their good senses. Check out this gang of gobblers taking out their frustrations on this hunter's Jake decoy!

Josh Miller

Me and my brother and our dad just left the ranch and we were NOT disappointed. Aaron and the guys made our experience amazing. The hospitality they showed us was perfect. The selection of massive bucks was impressive and we had so many opportunities at multiple huge bucks. The lodge was just breathtaking and Aaron had the lodge stocked with snacks and drinks. He made us breakfast and took us to restaurants and just did a wonderful job of making our trip great. We will absolutely be back.

The early season average whitetail buck scores 220" SCI with the largest two bucks scoring 352" SCI and 295" SCI. There are only a limited number of mature whitetail bucks available per year, so we offer our hunts on a first come first serve basis.

Swan Mountain Outfitters

Montana Guided Whitetail Deer Hunting

hunting trip deer

Whitetail deer are too often over looked in Montana! Boone and Crockett will confirm that the Flathead National Forest is one of the largest producers of trophy whitetail deer on public land in the country. We believe we offer hunters an incredible opportunity to hunt whitetail deer here in Montana. Deer here can be either mountain whitetails or plains whitetails. Swan Mountain Outfitters specializes in mountain whitetail Deer. Hunting for whitetail deer in the mountains of Montana is unique experience, done differently than in the midwest or south.

What Sets Us Apart

Swan Mountain Outfitters offers a variety of choices to hunt Whitetails either in combination with other species or targeting whitetails specifically, and choosing archery or rifle. You can hunt Whitetail deer by horseback or you can hunt using stands and blinds. We hunt public land exclusively, in the mountains of Flathead National Forest in Northwest Montana. Whitetail deer in our part of Montana are typically found at the lower elevations around our base camp and throughout the Swan-Seeley Valley, you’ll find them in the foothills and clearcuts. Because there is so much food and water in their natural habitat, you don’t need to pattern whitetail deer in Montana in the same manner as you would in other parts of the country; there are no acorns. We have quality Whitetail deer hunting in Montana primarily because our deer, not being over hunted, live longer. For example, it is possible to down a deer five years old or even older with much more developed racks.

Guided Archery Whitetail Deer Hunts

Hunters that enjoy archery hunting for whitetails will truly enjoy the hunting in Montana. We have thousands of acres of public land that we archery hunt. We have scouted the areas and have set up tree stands and blinds for our archery hunters. Our archery hunts are one of more affordable hunts as we can service more hunters with one guide since the majority of the time is spent in stands or blinds.

Bushy Creek Whitetail Outfitters

Indiana whitetail outfitters, affordable whitetail hunts.

Affordable Whitetail Hunts start with Bushy Creek ! Everyone is price conscious to some degree these days. We can’t say as we blame you. We understand. No one like to waste money. So Bushy Creek has put together a package to make your dreams of whitetail hunting more affordable.

First, take a look at our prices. $1550 for 5 FULL days of hunting is pretty affordable to start. But it doesn’t end there.  No sir !

We are going to purchase your non resident Indiana license and either sex deer tag and give it to you absolutely for free when you purchase one of our trophy whitetail hunting packages.

But we’re not through yet!

If you want to bring along a youth hunter who can hunt on a youth license, we’ll let him come along with you for free.  You provide the license, we’ll provide him 5 full days of hunting for free.  And if the youngster takes a deer or multiple deer, it doesn’t affect the number of deer the adult hunter can take.  And we’ll feed that youngster as well !  And you know how much kids these days can eat !

Just take a look at the faces on these happy youngsters !  You want to get your child’s attention away from their cell phone for a few days and get them back in the real world?  Take them deer hunting and let them harvest themselves a deer !

But we’re not done yet.  If you get three of your buddies to book with you as a group, we’ll knock off $100.00 from the cost of all four packages.  That’s a $400.00 discount for the group !

Nothing better than hunting with a group of your buddies !

And we’re going to feed and house you, and each member of your group of hunters beginning with dinner the day you arrive, then three square meals for the next five days, then breakfast on the morning you leave after your hunt is finished,  because we don’t want you getting hungry on the road.  And we don’t want you leaving the night after you come in from hunting.  Tired and possibly sleepy and having to find a place to stay late at night.  Nope !  We want you well rested and well fed for your trip back home.

Now think about how much you would spend on groceries if you were at home.  That’s 17 meals.  17 meals that you didn’t have to pay for.

So yes, we think we have some of the most affordable trophy hunting in the entire Midwest.  And we’ve got the prices and we’ve got the deer to back that up !

You want affordable whitetail hunts ?  We got you covered !

Hunt Elk in Idaho

Hunt whitetail deer in kansas, hunt antelope in wyoming, hunt turkey in nebraska, moose in alaska, south dakota mule deer, hogs in texas, black bear in idaho, make sure you’re fully equipped for your big hunt.

Idaho may not be the first state that many hunters think of when they think of elk habitats, but there are plenty of good bulls that call Idaho home. Plus, the state provides over-the-counter tags at a first-come, first-serve basis , meaning that anyone has the opportunity to score an elk tag.

In order to find land to hunt elk in Idaho, you want to search in grasses and agriculture fields. There’s a plethora of natural forests, state forests (which are public), and private lands that are a part of the Access Yes! Program . If you have a GPS and a general bearing of your surroundings, you should be able to track down a bull, stalk him and get your chance at a kill.

Why It Made the List

The main reason that Idaho elk hunting made the list is the fact that you can primitively camp in most national forests at no cost. This saves you a good amount of money on lodging, meaning you can save most of your money on the tag, license, and permit (around $600 total), food, fuel, and more.

Price: Less than $1,500

Many hunters have heard the lore of the giant whitetail deer that roam in Kansas — and the stories are true. The entire state is littered with trophy deer, and although the price of a tag is pretty expensive (near $450), the rest of the trip is incredibly affordable, which makes it a great option for anyone looking for one of the best hunting trips on a budget.

The state of Kansas is broken up into four different regions for deer hunting, and the tags are all available through a drawing process. Once you get your tag, there are plenty of options for how you hunt. Depending on your budget, you can cut costs by camping in a tent or an RV, or if you have a little bit of wiggle room, you can stay in hunting lodges or motels. Do your research and find a method that works best for you to get a cheap hunting trip put together!

Price: $500 – $1,000

Have you always wanted to try out hunting antelope in the United States? Wyoming provides you with plenty of opportunities to hunt down some speed goats without breaking the bank.

Wyoming is filled with state land and walk-in areas that you can hunt in. However, you’ll want to accumulate some preference points before you try for a tag since the tags can go pretty quickly. If you aren’t able to get a tag, there are leftover tags available, which will have less public land and less trophy potential, but still a good amount of antelope.

Wyoming is filled with different opportunities for you to hunt antelope at an affordable rate. You can find lodging at a campground for less than $25 per night, and if you prepare correctly (pack food ahead of time) and cut corners, you should be able to tag an antelope for a great price.

Price: $1,000 – $1,250

When it comes to getting a lot of game for your dollar, it’s hard to beat a turkey hunt in Nebraska. In the spring, you are allowed up to three birds per season, and a single turkey permit costs a little over $100. Plus, with modern-day technology and smartphones, you can purchase extra permits on your phone, meaning that you can hypothetically get all three turkeys in the same day for less than $350.

Single Bearded Turkey

If you’re looking for a cheap bow hunt, you’re not going to find many hunts that are more budget-friendly than a Nebraska turkey hunt. Once you’ve got your permits and your bow, the rest of the expenses are minimal. Most turkey hunting can be done on public land, and the state of Nebraska is relatively cheap in terms of lodging. As long as you don’t have to travel too far to get there, it’s an incredibly affordable trip to take.

Price: Less than $500

Many people would assume that any moose hunt would cost well over $3,000 — and when you mention that it’s in Alaska, you would think that it would cost $5,000+. While a tag and license do cost close to $1,000, if you’re willing to put a little bit of work in and walk for a ways, you can swing an entire moose hunt for closer to $2,000, which is a pretty cheap big game hunt.

Obviously, one of the most expensive parts of this hunt will be getting to Alaska. But, once you make it there, you’ll have to put some work in. Lace-up your boots and be prepared to stalk some moose — especially if you are looking for a bigger one.

Price: Around $2,000

Not only is there an abundance of mule deer in South Dakota, but there’s also an abundance in public land, and with reliable populations and relatively light hunting pressure, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get a mule deer without breaking the bank.

A deer license in South Dakota costs just south of $300, but once that’s been paid, you can be generally flexible with the rest of your expenses depending on how comfortable you want to be in your hunt. If you’re hunting near the national forests, you can find lodging for around $60/night. Take some time to do some planning and figure out when and where you want to go for your hunt.

Price: $1,400 – $1,600

Texas is a state unlike any other, so it’s only right that they have a hunting experience that’s completely unique. Not only can you hunt feral hogs in Texas, but you can do so at any time of the year and without a bag limit. Just purchase Item 157 (their “non-resident 5-day special hunting license) for a little less than $50 and you can hunt throughout the week!

There are some public hunting lands that you can utilize, but for the price, your best bet is to work through an outfitter and get put in a position to succeed. With such a low overhead cost and the affordable price of a license, spend the extra money on a good outfitter and make it the most productive week possible!

Price: $500 – $1000

A bear hunt may seem to be the pinnacle of pricey, but it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking to hunt black bears in the Rocky Mountains, you can do so for a reasonable rate in Idaho from late spring to early summer.

If you want to keep the hunt under $2,000, you’ll have to go without a guide. Thankfully, there are plenty of tags available over the counter in Idaho, and some places even allow you to take two bears. Take to the national forest land and prepare to do some spotting and stalking for a while, but if you are patient, you should get the opportunity to find a nice bear.

Price: $1,500 – $2,000

Man killed in Pisgah hunting accident was valedictorian, dedicated to family, church

hunting trip deer

Ethan Hahn took a day off from work to spend time outdoors with his father, Mark Hahn. The father and son, of Hildebran in Burke County, went hunting in Pisgah National Forest on the opening day of rifle hunting for deer.

Mark Hahn told the Citizen Times Nov. 21 that the two hunted occasionally. Ethan was an avid outdoorsman, and by Mark’s description, a model son.

Ethan’s gun accidentally discharged while he and his father were hiking through the woods, according to the incident report. He shot himself in the upper right arm.

Mark Hahn wasn’t sure exactly what happened. He rushed back to find Ethan on a steep hill. There were leaves on the ground, which Hahn conjectured made the ground slick.

Mark Hahn called 911 , rendered first aid and administered CPR until Burke County Sheriff’s Department officers arrived. They were about a quarter-mile from the road, according to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Officer E.T. Burkhalter, who was at the scene after the incident.

Ethan Hahn died in the forest Nov. 20. He was 24 years old.

Straight-A student, deeply religious

Ethan was a talented student. He graduated in 2017 as the valedictorian of East Burke High School and went on to excel at Appalachian State University in Boone, where he studied computer science. Both of his parents, Mark and his mother Holly, had also attended the university. Ethan's sister, Kaylee, is attending ASU's Hickory campus.

Ethan earned straight As in college, except for one A-minus, Mark said. That blemish festered with him so much that he retook the class and earned an A.

His father said that Ethan was religious and deeply dedicated to his church, East Valdese Baptist. Ethan recently wrote a devotional, writing about how he struggled with mixed emotions he experienced during the Christmas season. He found direction in the bible, which he just finished reading, cover to cover.

“This season as Anger, Sadness, Disgust, and Fear compete for control in our minds, I encourage you to quell them with the trust,” Ethan wrote. “Because during Christmas, it’s Joy’s turn.”

He wanted to travel across the country, spreading his faith, Mark Hahn said.

Ethan was working remotely for a Boone-based software company, and living with his parents. Before he died, Ethan and his father ate all three meals together, every day, Mark said.

“We take comfort knowing that he’s with our lord,” Mark said. “We miss him dearly.”

The family had not yet made arrangements for Ethan’s funeral when the Citizen Times spoke with them.

Burke County Sheriff’s Department is currently leading the investigation, according to Burkhalter.

Hunter lost: Bear hunter lost in Pisgah National Forest for over 12 hours airlifted to Mission

From the beginning of the year through the end of October 2023, there have been eight hunting incidents in North Carolina, according to data provided by wildlife commission spokesperson Anna Gurney. Hunting incidents qualify as an injury too severe for first aid and that occurred during hunting activities. Three of those incidents have resulted in fatalities.

Gurney did not immediately know how many of the hunting incidents occurred in Western North Carolina.

Deer hunting season with guns began Nov. 20 and will last until Dec. 9 for Western North Carolina. Wildlife officials urge all forest users ― hunters, hikers, mountain bikers and others ― to wear brightly colored clothing for added safety during hunting season.

Rules for firearm safety

  • Always point a firearm in a safe direction.
  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Never assume a firearm is unloaded.
  • Use binoculars, rather than a rifle scope, to identify the target.
  • Keep your finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • Be sure of your target, as well as what’s in front of and behind it.

Burkhalter told the Citizen Times that hunters should keep the safety on the firearm until the gun is pointed and aimed at the target. Hunters should lay the firearm down anytime hunters make an unnatural body movement, he said.

“Things can happen with a firearm that you don’t think could happen, but they can,” Burkhalter said, urging safety for hunters.

Pennsylvania sets limits, modifications to 2024-25 hunting season

H ARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners announced modifications and bagging limits for the 2024-25 hunting season.

In addition to bagging limits and modifications, the Game Commission announced earlier this week a change in antlerless deer license sales that they say will guarantee one for most hunters without waiting in line.

Modifications for the 2024-25 seasons include :

  • For black bear, the October muzzleloader season will be shortened to three days to reduce harvest rates on female bears and thereby promote stabilization of the bear population.
  • In Wildlife Management Units 4A, 4D and 5A, an extended firearms season for antlerless deer will be held from Jan. 2 to Jan. 20, running concurrently with the final two weeks of the flintlock and late archery seasons within those WMUs. Chronic Wasting Disease is present in these WMUs and extended seasons are being offered to help meet deer harvest goals there.
  • Mentored hunters of all ages will be eligible to hunt in the early October pheasant season segment, known best as the Junior Hunt.
  • For wild turkey, fall season length will be increased in 11 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) and WMU 5A, which was previously closed to fall hunting, will be opened for a three-day season. Season length will be reduced in WMUs 3D and 4C.
  • For furbearers, WMU 2D will be opened to bobcat hunting and trapping. Also, the fisher trapping season will be increased by one week in all WMUs open to fisher harvest. This will allow concurrent fisher and bobcat trapping seasons.
  • If pheasant hunting within the Central Susquehanna Wild Pheasant Recovery Area (WPRA) is opened again, it will be open to all hunters. Potential season dates and bag limits will be determined later this year, following data collection within the WPRA.

The Game Commission also announced 1,186,000 antlerless deer licenses will be allocated statewide for 2024-25, which is up from the 1,095,000 licenses allocated for 2023-24.

Pennsylvania sets limits, modifications to 2024-25 hunting season

Ohio's hunting and trapping dates for the 2024-25 seasons have been finalized

hunting trip deer

Hunting and trapping dates for the Ohio 2024-25 seasons of white-tailed deer, migratory birds, small game and furbearers have been finalized.

Members of the Ohio Wildlife Council approved those season dates April 10, according to a news release provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Several changes will go into effect next season − hunters should always refer to the Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations to ensure they are compliant.

Ohio deer hunting seasons for 2024-25

Deer season dates will remain similar to previous years.

Hunters may only harvest one antlered deer in Ohio throughout the season, regardless of how or where it is taken.

Hunting hours will remain 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Deer seasons statewide will have the following dates:

  • Deer archery: Sept. 28-Feb. 2
  • Youth deer gun: Nov. 16-17
  • Deer gun: Dec. 2-Dec. 8 and Dec. 21-22
  • Deer muzzleloader: Jan. 4-7

Deer bag limits will increase from two deer to three for hunters in six counties: Butler, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Madison and Pickaway.

"Deer management permits have been extended and are valid until Dec. 22, 2024, the last day of the bonus deer gun hunting weekend," the news release reads. "The permit is now available for use during the weeklong and bonus deer gun hunting weekend."

Ohio is expanding its Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) disease surveillance area of Hardin, Marion and Wyandot counties to include Auglaize and Jackson townships in Allen County.

"A CWD-positive deer was discovered in Allen County in 2023," the news release reads.

Hunters in the disease surveillance area have an expanded archery season of Sept. 14-Feb. 2, as well as an extra gun season running Oct. 12-14.

"Hunters within the disease surveillance area are required to submit samples for testing during the first two days of the early disease surveillance area gun season (Oct. 12-13) and the first two days of the weeklong deer gun season (Dec. 2-3)," the news release reads. "The Division of Wildlife will continue to offer voluntary testing drop-off locations and monitor for CWD within and around the disease surveillance area."

Other hunting seasons in Ohio for next year

The fall wild turkey hunting season will be open in 70 counties Oct. 1-27. The season limit will be one bird.

Spring 2025 wild turkey seasons will be announced later.

Ruffed grouse hunting season will run Nov. 1-Dec. 1 in 17 southern and eastern counties: Adams, Athens, Belmont, Gallia, Guernsey, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Pike, Ross, Scioto, Vinton and Washington. The daily limit will be one bird. The state's river otter trapping zones were renamed. The river otter season limit is three, with no more than one coming from Zone B. Zone A (formerly Zone C) is comprised of 22 eastern counties. A zone map will be available in the 2024-25 regulations.

Waterfowl hunting seasons also were approved. The second split of duck, coot and merganser hunting dates are one week later than last season in the north zone and Lake Erie marsh zone. The north zone duck, coot and merganser hunting season are open Oct. 19-27, then again Nov. 16-Jan. 5. The Lake Erie marsh zone duck, coot and merganser hunting season dates are Oct. 12-27, then again Nov. 9-Dec. 22. Goose and Brant hunting season dates were approved in the Lake Erie marsh zone for Oct. 12-27, then again Nov. 16-Feb. 3. The youth and military waterfowl hunting weekend will be Sept. 28-29. A complete list of hunting and trapping seasons dates for 2024-25 is available at wildohio.gov .
