Montana Guided Elk Hunting

hunting trips 2023

These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips, elk season is what they’ve been waiting for!

Montana Elk

Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Our Montana Guided Elk Hunts

All of our Montana elk hunts require more or less rigor and we offer elk hunting in three distinct seasons:

  • Our season starts with archery elk hunting.
  • We then offer rifle elk hunts in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Bob Marshall is one of the few areas in the country where you can rifle hunt elk during the rut.
  • Our last hunting season is during the general Montana hunting season.

We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity.

We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps.

Not sure you can handle the physical rigor of our Montana wilderness elk hunting? You might consider a later season guided elk hunt, when mother nature brings the elk out of the high country and into proximity of our base camp. The hours in the saddle and elevation gained in hiking is lessened, and the base camp has a few more modern amenities than our upper camp and spike camps. These are good first time elk hunts for youth elk hunters. An extra bonus is that our base camp is in the heart of whitetail deer territory for hunters looking to combination hunt.

Archery Elk

Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts.

Archery hunts necessitate minimizing over exposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas.

We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters opportunities to be successful.

With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait!

Book with Capt. Ron

DSC00636 2.jpg

Capt. Ron Ratliff of Marsh Dawn Charters will tour you through the mud-banked maze of the expansive Louisiana saltwater marsh. Born and raised on the bayou, Capt. Ron knows these waters like the back of his hand and provides anglers with the trip of a lifetime hunting down bull redfish in shallow water

The salt marsh habitat provides  great opportunities to sight-fish bull redfish on fly gear and light tackle. You may also see large black drum, sheepshead, and jack crevalle during this time of year although fall is peak redfishing season. Colder temperatures bring clear water and draw large redfish into the marsh, sometimes in excess of 20 pounds. Expect shots at  distances of thirty feet or less. On calm days, you may be able to venture offshore and catch wahoo, tuna, snapper, billfish and more near Louisiana’s offshore oil rigs and drilling platforms. Southern Louisiana provides world-class fishing at any time of the year, so no matter the season you will be able to experience the region's great fishing, but fall is certainly a favorite season and spots fill up fast.  Book your trip with Captain Ron today.

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

Many people think that you need big-time money to go on a big game hunting trip. While money can certainly buy you some exciting hunting experiences, you don’t need to break the bank in order to have a great time hunting. Check out our list of affordable hunting trips so that you can find how to have a great time hunting on a budget!

Table of Contents

Hunt Elk in Idaho

Hunt whitetail deer in kansas, hunt antelope in wyoming, hunt turkey in nebraska, moose in alaska, south dakota mule deer, hogs in texas, black bear in idaho, make sure you’re fully equipped for your big hunt.

Idaho may not be the first state that many hunters think of when they think of elk habitats, but there are plenty of good bulls that call Idaho home. Plus, the state provides over-the-counter tags at a first-come, first-serve basis , meaning that anyone has the opportunity to score an elk tag.

In order to find land to hunt elk in Idaho, you want to search in grasses and agriculture fields. There’s a plethora of natural forests, state forests (which are public), and private lands that are a part of the Access Yes! Program . If you have a GPS and a general bearing of your surroundings, you should be able to track down a bull, stalk him and get your chance at a kill.

Why It Made the List

The main reason that Idaho elk hunting made the list is the fact that you can primitively camp in most national forests at no cost. This saves you a good amount of money on lodging, meaning you can save most of your money on the tag, license, and permit (around $600 total), food, fuel, and more.

Price: Less than $1,500

Many hunters have heard the lore of the giant whitetail deer that roam in Kansas — and the stories are true. The entire state is littered with trophy deer, and although the price of a tag is pretty expensive (near $450), the rest of the trip is incredibly affordable, which makes it a great option for anyone looking for one of the best hunting trips on a budget.

The state of Kansas is broken up into four different regions for deer hunting, and the tags are all available through a drawing process. Once you get your tag, there are plenty of options for how you hunt. Depending on your budget, you can cut costs by camping in a tent or an RV, or if you have a little bit of wiggle room, you can stay in hunting lodges or motels. Do your research and find a method that works best for you to get a cheap hunting trip put together!

Price: $500 – $1,000

Have you always wanted to try out hunting antelope in the United States? Wyoming provides you with plenty of opportunities to hunt down some speed goats without breaking the bank.

Wyoming is filled with state land and walk-in areas that you can hunt in. However, you’ll want to accumulate some preference points before you try for a tag since the tags can go pretty quickly. If you aren’t able to get a tag, there are leftover tags available, which will have less public land and less trophy potential, but still a good amount of antelope.

Wyoming is filled with different opportunities for you to hunt antelope at an affordable rate. You can find lodging at a campground for less than $25 per night, and if you prepare correctly (pack food ahead of time) and cut corners, you should be able to tag an antelope for a great price.

Price: $1,000 – $1,250

When it comes to getting a lot of game for your dollar, it’s hard to beat a turkey hunt in Nebraska. In the spring, you are allowed up to three birds per season, and a single turkey permit costs a little over $100. Plus, with modern-day technology and smartphones, you can purchase extra permits on your phone, meaning that you can hypothetically get all three turkeys in the same day for less than $350.

Single Bearded Turkey

If you’re looking for a cheap bow hunt, you’re not going to find many hunts that are more budget-friendly than a Nebraska turkey hunt. Once you’ve got your permits and your bow, the rest of the expenses are minimal. Most turkey hunting can be done on public land, and the state of Nebraska is relatively cheap in terms of lodging. As long as you don’t have to travel too far to get there, it’s an incredibly affordable trip to take.

Price: Less than $500

Many people would assume that any moose hunt would cost well over $3,000 — and when you mention that it’s in Alaska, you would think that it would cost $5,000+. While a tag and license do cost close to $1,000, if you’re willing to put a little bit of work in and walk for a ways, you can swing an entire moose hunt for closer to $2,000, which is a pretty cheap big game hunt.

Obviously, one of the most expensive parts of this hunt will be getting to Alaska. But, once you make it there, you’ll have to put some work in. Lace-up your boots and be prepared to stalk some moose — especially if you are looking for a bigger one.

Price: Around $2,000

Not only is there an abundance of mule deer in South Dakota, but there’s also an abundance in public land, and with reliable populations and relatively light hunting pressure, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get a mule deer without breaking the bank.

A deer license in South Dakota costs just south of $300, but once that’s been paid, you can be generally flexible with the rest of your expenses depending on how comfortable you want to be in your hunt. If you’re hunting near the national forests, you can find lodging for around $60/night. Take some time to do some planning and figure out when and where you want to go for your hunt.

Price: $1,400 – $1,600

Texas is a state unlike any other, so it’s only right that they have a hunting experience that’s completely unique. Not only can you hunt feral hogs in Texas, but you can do so at any time of the year and without a bag limit. Just purchase Item 157 (their “non-resident 5-day special hunting license) for a little less than $50 and you can hunt throughout the week!

There are some public hunting lands that you can utilize, but for the price, your best bet is to work through an outfitter and get put in a position to succeed. With such a low overhead cost and the affordable price of a license, spend the extra money on a good outfitter and make it the most productive week possible!

Price: $500 – $1000

A bear hunt may seem to be the pinnacle of pricey, but it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking to hunt black bears in the Rocky Mountains, you can do so for a reasonable rate in Idaho from late spring to early summer.

If you want to keep the hunt under $2,000, you’ll have to go without a guide. Thankfully, there are plenty of tags available over the counter in Idaho, and some places even allow you to take two bears. Take to the national forest land and prepare to do some spotting and stalking for a while, but if you are patient, you should get the opportunity to find a nice bear.

Price: $1,500 – $2,000

Does one of these inexpensive hunting trips have you packing your bags and looking at dates? If so, you’ll want to make sure that you’re fully equipped for your big hunt! For many it is a lifestyle and gateway to the outdoors and a connection to nature. These pastimes often bring together family and friends and create lasting memories. Hunting and fishing are also a fantastic activity to get kids outside and interacting with the environment. Studies show that time spent in nature positively affect child and adult health and well-being. This can be through lowering stress levels, increasing exercise, and even through the healthy lean protein harvested while hunting or fishing. Many state fish and wildlife agencies provide cooking guides full of recipes hunters and anglers use to feed their families and communities:

  • Cooking Texas Style - This Texas Parks and Wildlife series showcases how Texans have been serving wild game to their families for generations as the original low-carb, low-fat, all-natural food. From venison to dove, turkey, or quail, the videos and recipes show healthy choices the whole family can enjoy.
  • Kentucky Afield - Through this series the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources invites viewers into the kitchen to learn how to prepare freshly harvested meals like striper chowder and deer camp chili.

Beyond the connection to nature and human health benefits, hunting and fishing also support conservation and land stewardship. When President Nixon signed the first ever Presidential proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day he highlighted this conservation commitment, writing: "I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations." While the inaugural National Hunting and Fishing Day took place in 1972, hunters and anglers have supported conservation for much longer through their commitment to sustainable practices and m anufacturers  excise taxes paid on sporting equipment.

Excise Tax from Hunting and Fishing Funds Conservation

Industry excise taxes have been crucial to American conservation since 1937, when pressure from conservation groups and the public helped pass the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, known as Pittman-Robertson, followed in 1950 by the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act, known as Dingell-Johnson. Managed through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program , these funds provide more than $1 billion a year to support fish and wildlife. Across the country, state and territory fish and wildlife agencies are on the front lines of conservation using Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration funds as an indispensable part of their budget.

The excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment collected through the Wildlife Restoration Act have been one of America’s most effective tools for funding conservation. These excise tax funds are used by state fish and wildlife agencies to maintain public hunting access to tens of millions of acres, teach over 600,000 hunter education students annually, monitor and manage over 500 species of mammals and birds, and support nearly 800 firearm and archery target shooting ranges where the public can hone their skills.

Tuskegee students in hunter orange and camouflage look on as Bill Freemen shows them how to process a deer.

  • Federal Excise Taxes Fund Massive Public Hunting Area Purchase - The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish acquired the L-Bar Ranch in late 2022, through excise taxes paid by firearms, ammunition, and archery manufacturers. The new property expanded the existing Marquez Wildlife Management Area to 68,000 acres—106 square miles—of public land for hunters, birders, and nature enthusiasts.
  • Supporting Outdoor Diversity and Access for Tuskegee University Students Through Hunter Education - Sergeant Bill Freeman and his colleagues at The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are working to ensure the state’s wildlife and wild places are for everyone. These efforts have utilized Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program funds to support hunter education courses and mentored hunting trips for students at Tuskegee University and other colleges in the state. Hunting and other outdoor related activities allow the public to enjoy the state’s recourses and become an active member in the stewardship of these resources.
  • Elk Restoration in the Eastern United States - After being absent a century or more, elk have been restored to the eastern United States. With sweat-equity investments of dedicated wildlife biologists and conservation groups, and the reliable and consistent conservation funding made possible by the Wildlife Restoration Act, state fish and wildlife agencies in eight states now manage robust herds of elk. Kentucky alone went from 1,500 to 10,000 elk in two decades.

Since 1950, the excise taxes on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel collected through the Sport Fish Restoration Act have been used by state and territory fish and wildlife agencies to ensure clean water, healthy fish, and public access to waterways. With this funding state agencies teach over 1.5 million students’ aquatic education annually, raise and release over 1 billion fish annually into waterways, and funded over 8900 public boating and fishing areas.

  • Steelhead Restoration - For more than half a century, America’s fishing equipment manufacturers have shared a partnership with state and federal agencies through the Dingell-Johnson Act. Hear from the industry, state, and federal partners supporting steelhead restoration work through these excise tax funds.
  • Casting A Fly Rod To Apache Trout Is A Testament To Perseverance - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal to delist the Apache trout at an event with the White Mountain Apache Tribe, the U.S. Forest Service, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and Trout Unlimited. The Apache trout stands to be the first sport fish species to be recovered and removed from the federal list of threatened and endangered species.
  • Rio Grande cutthroat trout—a Model for Fisheries Conservation – Supported through Sport Fish Restoration dollars, biologists with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish are working to conserve Rio Grande cutthroat trout.

Wildlife Management Through Hunting and Fishing

Hunting and fishing can be beneficial as wildlife management tools to maintain the health and abundance of wildlife species and the balance of our natural resources. Hunting and fishing can also be tools to decrease invasive species invasive species An invasive species is any plant or animal that has spread or been introduced into a new area where they are, or could, cause harm to the environment, economy, or human, animal, or plant health. Their unwelcome presence can destroy ecosystems and cost millions of dollars. Learn more about invasive species and control wildlife diseases.

  • Funding Wildlife Health Labs - Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration funds are protecting the health of our nation’s fish and wildlife by funding over 35 laboratories conducting disease surveillance and response.
  • Game Mammal Study Across Hawaiian Islands Can Support Hunters and Endangered Species - There are two main strategies for controlling invasive game mammals throughout the Hawaiian Islands: putting up fences and hunting. With funding through the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Program, the Division of Forestry and Wildlife at Hawai’i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources is using island wide surveys to study what areas non-native game mammals are using, how to manage existing hunting areas, and even how hunting could be a tool to protect sensitive species and ecosystems.

Anti-migrant raid targets Wildberries warehouse outside Moscow

Police raided the warehouse of online retailer Wildberries in Elektrostal, near Moscow, on Friday morning, according to state-run news agency TASS, which attributed the action to ongoing attempts to tackle illegal immigration.

“Scores of law enforcement officers entered the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal to conduct an illegal migration inspection,” a law enforcement source told TASS, adding that staff documents were checked and that similar raids were being conducted in several other regions of the country.

According to Telegram channels Baza and SHOT , the police were hunting for draft-dodgers as well as illegal migrants. Some detainees were reportedly handed call-up papers.

“There’s a raid. Nobody can leave or enter. They’re demanding ID, military and immigration papers all at once,” the Beware, Moscow Telegram channel reported , quoting eyewitnesses.

According to Telegram channel Mash , police had already detained some migrants near the warehouse on Thursday. Of those, 16 were reportedly in the Russian Federation illegally, three of whom are now awaiting deportation.

According to Beware, Moscow , the raid will last all day, and the Wildberries facility will remain closed.

Colorado on map, about hunting in colorado.

Colorado is an elk hunter’s paradise. It is a high, rugged, mountainous state, the only state in the U.S. that lies entirely above 3,200 feet elevation. The eastern part of Colorado consists of high plains, which are a mix of prairie, forests, buttes, and canyons, much of it covered in farms and ranches. The western half of Colorado is covered by the southern Rocky Mountains. Colorado contains some of the most mountainous country in the U.S., including some 53 peaks that are 14,000 feet or higher in elevation above sea level, known as fourteeners. These mountains are largely covered in conifer forests and aspen stands, providing a haven for elk and other wildlife. Colorado has more elk than any other state, and is one of the few places where hunters can buy elk licenses over the counter for certain units and seasons, without applying in advance, which makes it a popular destination for do-it-yourself hunts and last-minute bookings for outfitted hunts. Over-the-counter licenses are often also available for archery pronghorn hunts and in certain units for white-tailed deer. Most other hunting licenses are issued through a drawing. Besides elk, huntable game in Colorado includes white-tailed deer and mule deer, moose, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mountain lions, and black bears. The world-record typical mule deer, which scored 226 4/8, was shot in Colorado in 1972. Upland birds and waterfowl are also popular draws for hunters. To buy a hunting license in Colorado, you’ll be required to show your hunter’s safety card. Colorado hunters are also required to wear 500 square inches of blaze orange. Specific regulations and more information about Colorado hunting is available through Colorado Parks & Wildlife: http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/BigGame.aspx .
