South Africa Safari Holidays & Tours from India

South africa safari holidays from india.

Surrounded by oceans and captivating views, South Africa is the perfect holiday destination for all types of travellers: honeymooners, families, and especially adventure seekers. With superb infrastructure and wonderful hospitality, it is truly a memorable destination. Most itineraries to South Africa begin in Johannesburg and cover Kruger National Park (or the adjacent private reserves), Cape Town, the Winelands (Franschhoek & Stellenbosch) and parts of the Garden Route.

Cape Town V&A Waterfront

It is a great first safari destination as many of the game reserves and parks have the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, cape buffalo), a must-see for first-time safari-goers. It also has some unique and unusual safari destinations such as large private game reserves in the North near the Kalahari as well as in the east near Durban.

If you are planning on visiting South Africa on a holiday from India there are several things you should keep in mind.

Is South Africa the right destination for me?

Our answer in one word: YES! South Africa is a beautiful destination for all sorts of travellers. It has beautiful vistas and wonderful food, romantic retreats and a vibrant arts and culture scene, and wildlife like no other place in the world.

I am vegetarian. Will I get vegetarian / Indian food in South Africa?

Yes, you will easily get great vegetarian food all over South Africa. South Africa produces some of the best fresh vegetables and fruits in the world, so expect delicious food. And while there are great Indian restaurants in most major cities of South Africa, the food may not be the same as what you get at home. So, we normally suggest that you opt for continental dishes. Another plus point: most chefs in South Africa are trained in Jain style cuisine, so you can easily order food without onions or garlic.

Where should I go in South Africa?

Take a look at our sample list of South Africa tours and holiday itineraries. We generally customize all our tours, so feel free to get in touch.

How soon should I book my South Africa holiday?

If you are travelling from November to February, we recommend booking well in advance to get the properties of your choice. Christmas is usually very busy in South Africa (it’s peak season and the summer months) and most good properties (especially the safari lodges) get booked out 3-6 months in advance.

If you’re are travelling during from April to October, it will be easier to get space as this is usually the off-peak season. It is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, however, it does not get too chilly. It is also the best time to go for safaris, and well in time with Indian summer holidays.

What’s the weather like in South Africa?

Read this article to know more about the different seasons and the general weather patterns in South Africa.

Can I drive in South Africa? Will my Indian driving license work?

Yes, you can! And we highly recommend it. The roads are in wonderful condition; you drive on the same side of the road as India, and an Indian driving license (written in English) works! Read more about self-driving in South Africa here.

How can I get a tourist visa to South Africa as an Indian citizen?

Read this article to know more about how to get a tourist visa to South Africa as an Indian citizen.

Do I need any vaccinations to go to South Africa?

No, you don’t, unless you are travelling to South Africa from a country where you need to take a vaccination. Read more about this here. Malaria is prevalent in some areas of South Africa. Generally, our Indian guests do not take any medications for this, but carry a mosquito-repellant like Odomos.

How to get to South Africa from India?

There are no longer any direct flights from India to South Africa. You will have to have one stopover, either somewhere in the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha), or Ethiopia, or Kenya. The shortest flight from Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore to Johannesburg is usually Emirates, taking approximately 13 – 15 hours including stopover.

However, Emirates is usually more expensive than other airlines. We have travelled on Emirates, Etihad, Kenya Airways & Ethiopian Airlines, and all airlines are perfectly safe and comfortable to travel on. Ethiopian Airliens and Kenya Airways are usually a little more basic, but cheaper as well.

How shall I book my tickets from India to South Africa?

We can either help you book your tickets via our agent, or you can book it yourself (online or offline). Before you book your flights, it’s good to have an itinerary in place because you will usually book an open jaw ticket (eg. arrive in Johannesburg and depart from Cape Town).

Is South Africa a safe holiday destination?

Most of the areas you will be visiting will very safe. There are regular police patrols and it is recommended that you stick to well-lit areas. However, South Africa, like India, has a big divide between the rich and the poor and this causes some disquiet, especially in areas like Johannesburg. We recommend keeping the same precautions that you would do in India: don’t roam around at night and be aware of your surroundings.

South Africa & India: A Long History

South Africa and India share a long, proud history, dating back to 1860, when Indian migrants first settled on the shores of Durban. This relationship was further deepened with Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and with the end of apartheid. Today, South Africa and India have bolstered a strong relationship as members of BRICS. We hope this relationship can and will grow over the years.

Chalo Africa provides luxury African safari tours and holidays from the United States (Washington DC), United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and India.

Shraddha from Borivali office offered all the help and support for the tour. Next was Dinesh. What to talk about him. He is awesome and most helpful during our tour. 100% marks to him. He has been our guiding tour and mentor. Next Ela from South Africa who was so personal, friendly with warm welcome. She is the most knowledgeable who gave us such vital information on SA. It was really an awesome and beautiful experience. Looking forward for such experience in future. Warm Regards Santosh Haldankar

South Africa tour : Hello, We enjoyed the tour,it was very smooth with no hitches thanks to Amit out tour manager and snowie and Marcos our South Africa local guides. Looking forward to some more trips with Veena world.

It was an amazing trip. Loved all the site seeings, i did alot of additional adventures which I’ll remember for a lifetime. Special thanks to my Tour Manager Vivek Ghag for being super supportive and caring. He’s amazing at his job and I would love to say having him as my Tour Manager definitely was icing on the cake. I would definitely love to get him as my tour manager in future also. Overall a veryyy memorable trip.

1. It was an extremely well managed, hassel free tour, top class accommodation, special mention, hotel Diaz at Mossels Bay. 2. Food arrangements - Veena World managed to provide us decent vegetarian Indian food for lunch and dinner almost on all the days of the trip. The 1 day pizza lunch was amazing, it was a refreshing change. 3.The local tour guides were very knowledgeable, special mention to Marcos who joined the tour from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. 4.Good coverage, we saw all the important sight seeing places. 5. Our tour manager Sainath Barade deserves an applause for managing a group of 40 people so well. There were senior citizens as well as kids, but absolutely no complaints. He tried to accommodate everybody's requests, which resulted in a very satisfying overall experience. Thanks, Veena World.

Top Bucket-List Experiences

1. Rendezvous with Africa’s ‘Big 5’

Africa’s most iconic wildlife creatures comprise elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard which are popularly known as the ‘Big 5’ across the continent. And South Africa is one of those very few places where you would be able to tick off sighting all the five in just one day. South Africa has been listed among the finest ‘ Big 5 safari destinations ’; thanks to the country’s lush foliage, hauntingly beautiful forests, vast wildlife and outstanding national parks. Kruger National Park, MalaMala, Lion Sands and Dulini, Phinda Game Reserve, Madikwe Game Reserve are just a few names where the Big 5 can be easily spotted.

While all the attention has been given to the ‘Big 5’, the tourism board of SA is now actively promoting the agenda of seeing ‘Big 7’ where Southern Right whales and Great White sharks are the interesting additions. And if you’re looking to see the Big Seven in one outing, the Eastern Cape is the place to be at.

2. Discover the scenic trail of Garden Route

Along the country's southeast coast, the Garden Route, SA’s popular holiday destination, runs for about 300 kilometres through some of South Africa's most breathtaking coastal scenery. The route which begins about four hours outside Cape Town stretches along the Indian Ocean and winds its way via the gorgeous towns of George, Knysna, Wilderness and Sedgefield.

It looks like entering into a dreamy fairyland where you are constantly accompanied by the rolling green hills, giant trees, lagoons, colourful birds and picturesque landscapes that are nothing but drop-dead gorgeous. The twisty trails are mostly followed by hikers while the forests surrounding the lakes and rivers here invite long drives.

Making your mind to road-trip through this mesmerising route? Book one of these South Africa Tour Packages with us and we guarantee you an unforgettable holiday experience.

2. Experience the medley of adventure and leisure at Mossel Bay

This bustling Garden Route town located near Cape Town is a favourite holiday spot and one of the ports of South Africa. Lying close to the towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna on the Garden Route, Mossel Bay has become an ideal retreat for travellers seeking adventure and respite. While water sports are enormously popular along with whale watching activities, its wide beaches and awesome cliffs of Cape St Blaize’s southern shores have become the handpicked favourites in the itinerary. The jaw-dropping Outeniqua Mountains in the backdrop also make for a worthwhile stopover on the Garden Route.

3. Relish the beach holiday vibes at Benguerra Island, Mozambique

A luxury beach holiday destination situated off the coast of Mozambique, Benguerra Island is an island hideaway sitting peacefully on a protected lagoon. Disappear for a day on a romantic castaway picnic, sail the sapphire waters in a sunset dhow cruise or how about diving your way around the coral reefs, teeming with the school of rare fishes.

Benguerra Island over the recent years has gained importance due to various intimate lodging options coming into the picture and the variety of island experiences assuring a promise of deep relaxation. Once you visit this adventure haven surrounded by a hushed silence, you will be forced to choose between Benguerra and other beach destinations around the world.

4. Swim with the penguins at Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach or Betty’s Bay has been the home of an African penguin colony since 1982, where tourists are able to observe the penguins up and close and enjoy the swimming. You will see these pretty little creatures splashing around in the water or basking in the sunlight on the boulders at the far end of the beach. What is interesting to note is that they are so used to humans that you won’t see them rushing away or hiding; some of them come pretty close and even swim around you. While they may look cute, they are still the animals belonging to the wild so try to be careful around them and avoid feeding.

To get the best views, try to arrive before 11:00 am. Apart from the penguins, the Boulders Beach itself is quite gorgeous which makes it a photographer’s delight too!

South Africa at a Glance

With extraordinary landscapes, iconic wildlife, urban excitement and cultural diversity – this rainbow country promises a spectacle unmatched by anywhere else on Earth. Here are ten soulful reasons to embark on South African holidays:

Majestic Panoramas & Nature

Table Mountain and Cape Town are beautiful places with high cliffs, bays, and beaches. Chapman’s Peak is a tall mountain road next to the ocean that has great views.

The Garden Route is a long road trip along the coast with forests, lagoons, and beaches like Dolphin Beach. The Amphitheatre Drakensberg mountains are big and rocky, and the Midlands Meander has small, pretty towns.

In the spring, the dry Namaqualand area is covered in bright orange, yellow, and purple flowers. Even the big Kalahari desert has a surprise – the Augrabies Falls , which crash into a green gorge. Bring a camera – South Africa has so many pretty places to take pictures.

Premier Wildlife Encounters

Get ready to see huge animals roaming free in special parks. You can go on drives to spot Africa’s famous Big Five – prowling lions, big herds of elephants, rare rhinos, sneaky leopards, and strong buffalo. You’ll also find many other cool animals that only live here, like tall giraffes, striped zebras, laughing hyenas, and lots of different birds living in deserts, forests, and grasslands.

You can even get close to cheetahs at special centres, feed ostriches that are taller than you, or watch giant great white sharks jump out of the water. The ocean is full of amazing creatures too. You can watch whales at certain times of the year or dive in the coral reefs of Sodwana Bay to see manta rays and bright tropical fish. Seeing wildlife in South Africa is always exciting.

Adventure Haven

Get ready to be brave while seeing amazing views. You can look through metal bars in a cage as big Great White sharks swim right up to your face. Try surfing down the huge Atlantis Dunes on a sandboard or climb to the top of Baboons Peak in the Drakensberg Amphitheatre mountains. Test your courage by bungee jumping off the world’s tallest jump at Bloukrans Bridge . In South Africa, you can have exciting adventures every day.

Fusion Food & Wine

Food lovers will enjoy the Cape Wineland farms and restaurants, which mix European, Asian, and African cooking styles. Try yummy dishes like spicy peri-peri chicken, bunny chow (curry in bread bowls), fresh Snoek fish, and flavorful Cape Malay stews. Drink special South African wines made from Muscadel grapes, like red Pinotage or golden Chenin Blanc.

Visit the beautiful valleys of Franschhoek , Stellenbosh  and Paarl to find the best wines. These valleys have pretty mountains and old Cape Dutch buildings that are 300 years old. Famous wine farms like Vergelegen , Boschendal , and Fairview cover over 100,00 hectares. Raise a glass to a tasty food and wine vacation.

Rainbow Culture

South Africa is called the “rainbow nation” because 11 different language groups live together happily in a colourful mix of cultures. People in Cape Town speak a special “kaapse” language that mixes English, Afrikaans, and Malay words. Try tasty bunny chows (curry in bread) brought by South Indian people in Durban, or learn about traditional African healing from sangomas (medicine men).

Go to concerts with powerful gospel choir songs or visit township shebeens (taverns) playing exciting kwaito, jazz, and house music until the morning. Let the friendly local people teach you new things through fun cultural experiences.

City Sights & Shopping

Big cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town are exciting, with busy markets, museums, and nightlife. You can also visit historic neighbourhoods with important places from the apartheid era that tell about the country’s modern history.

Shop for fashionable clothes on lively Long Street or Church Street while grabbing a quick lunch from a street food stall. Or watch crowds of shoppers at fancy malls like Sandton City, which has expensive brands from around the world. See how the city is changing in the cool Maboneng area, with trendy cafes and art galleries showing new ideas.

Durban is also a great place to relax on the Golden Mile beaches , with resorts, piers, and walkways like Marine Parade . Take an evening walk while street musicians play music and food stalls fill the salty air with yummy smells.

Safari Among the Big Five in Iconic Parks

Look for lion prides sneaking through the bushes or big elephants eating acacia trees in famous parks like Kruger National Park . It’s huge – 7,500 square miles and next to Mozambique. It’s even bigger than the whole country of Israel. The prices are pretty good, and you can try to see the famous Big 5 animals – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. These animals live in the same kind of places that the first European explorers saw.

Get away from the crowds by driving yourself on dirt roads for hours without seeing any other cars. You can go to faraway water holes to watch hyena families or big herds of antelope drinking carefully while lots of birds make noise. Or, you can stay in fancy tents and have drinks while talking about what animals you saw around the campfire under the stars. No matter how you do a safari, you’ll have an amazing time in the wild.

Penguins & Marine Life

Adorable African Penguins make their nests in big, grassy sand dunes. Visitors love taking selfies with them on Boulders Beach, just an hour from Cape Town . Close by, at False Bay, volunteers from a prison help protect the baby penguins through conservation work. Dyer Island is amazing, with 60,000 Cape Fur Seals and African Penguins hanging out together on rocks next to waters full of predators.

The cold water currents bring Great White Sharks that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. There are also other huge sea creatures like giant tuna and southern right whales that bring people for cage diving and boat rides. Under the water, colourful coral reefs are home to bright tropical fish off Sodwana Bay Marine Reserve . It’s perfect for snorkelling and diving you’ll never forget.

Luxury Escapes

Hidden bush lodges give you a luxurious stay with cosy fireplaces and candle lit lanterns in fancy rooms that look out over water holes where animals often visit. Wake up to pretty orange sunrises and singing birds instead of a loud alarm clock. Many places have cool extras like outdoor baths under the stars, safari spas, or fancy restaurants that bring in special ingredients by helicopter for VIP guests.

For a dreamy beach vacation, stay in private villas on the South Coast with their own small pools. You’ll be just minutes away from swimming with dolphins or visiting lighthouses. Fancy city hotels also have great views of Table Mountain through big glass windows and cool rooftop bars for cocktails. South Africa is perfect for special getaways to celebrate important moments in your life.

UNESCO Accolades

Eight special places in South Africa are UNESCO World Heritage Sites – that’s more than any other African country except Egypt. These places are important because of their unique nature and wildlife. For example, iSimangaliso St Lucia Wetland Park is home to 521 different kinds of birds and 80% of the marine species that can only be found here.

The huge uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park mountains have over 35,000 ancient cave paintings by the San Bushmen and beautiful houses from the Mississippian period built by the Southern Ndebele people. Off the coast of Cape Town, you can visit the famous Robben Island prison. Nelson Mandela’s small, lonely cell shows how cruel apartheid was. But South Africa’s journey to equality through peace is unlike anything else on the continent.

It’s impossible to ignore South Africa’s powerful history and breathtaking landscapes that will stay in your heart forever. Let South Africa amaze you in so many ways on your vacation through GT.

Dynamic South Africa stretches over 471,000 sq mi, cradling vastly different landscapes and city vibes. Must-see areas include:

Crowned ‘Africa’s Most Beautiful City’, Cape Town impresses with spectacular Table Mountain backdrops. World-class attractions like Robben Island and Cape Point share space with buzzing Waterfront dining districts.

Garden Route

This scenic 190 mi stretch of verdant mountains, golden beaches and tranquil lagoons promises a road-tripping paradise. Route 62 is a delightful parallel alternative, too.

Kruger National Park

Spot Africa’s Big 5 – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffalo roaming freely in this iconic 7500 sq mi game reserve near Johannesburg.

Cosmopolitan coastal Durban in KwaZulu Natal province blends natural beauty with modern attractions like uShaka Marine World aquarium. Nearby, the Drakensberg mountains astound, while the Midlands Meander offers laidback escapism. Try crafter shopping, hiking and cycling trails.

This dedicated luxury resort in North West province thrills with hotels, casinos, golf courses, entertainment and nearby safaris at Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Johannesburg

Modern Africa’s second most populous city after Cairo still retains history through apartheid-era sites while showcasing regeneration through art galleries and cultural sites.

Cape Winelands

Rolling vineyards producing world-class Chenin blanc, Pinotage and other wine varieties frame charming Dutch architecture towns like Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch, just an hour from Cape Town.

Safari Game Parks

Abundant wildlife thrives in national parks and private reserves like Kruger, Hluhluwe Imfolozi, Addo Elephant, and Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Each pocket flaunts different landscapes and species.

With ample variety across provinces, South Africa guarantees an unforgettable itinerary blending city energy, scenic road trips, and outdoor adventuring that caters to every interest.

Planning a dream South African holiday takes organising logistics like securing necessary travel permits and allowing hassle-free entry. Here is a simplified step-by-step tourist visa guide for Indian passport holders:

Types of South African Visas

South Africa issues various visa classifications depending on travel purposes to control foreign entry and activities per regulations.

Visitor’s Visa stays are most common for Indian tourists, allowing them to holiday, go sightseeing, or visit family for up to 90 days, maximum, per application. Extensions may be permitted through official channels.

Those invited by SA resident families can also apply for a Home Affairs Letter, easing visa-free entry and staying around 27 days.

Study Visas cater for students, while Work Visas serve employed/business travellers, including permits like Intra-Company Transfer and Critical Skills types.

Streamlined South African Visa Guide for Indians

Securing a pre-trip South African visitor visa takes 4 key steps:

1. Online Application

Submit required documents like passport, photos, confirmed tickets/hotel through the user-friendly VFS South Africa Visa portal serving major Indian cities. Choose suitable application centre timings.

2. Biometrics Collection

Next, visit the centre for brief digital fingerprinting completing identification protocols necessary. Wear plain clothing avoiding distractions for photos captured.

3. Status Tracking

Check application status updates online through system notifications. Roughly 15-30 days processing period assumes timely background verifications. Be patient.

4. Submission & Collection

Email/SMS informs passport readiness for collection back from the Visa centre carrying receipts and IDs for verification. Couriered delivery requires signing. Then double check visa stamps.

That’s it. Visitor visa costs around INR 5000 per person via seamless online application system. Confirm tourist/business visa subclass fees before submitting. Payment requires internationally enabled debit/credit cards only. Follow the streamlined routine for securing South African entry access stress-free.

WINTER (May – Aug) makes an ideal time for Indian tourists to avoid the extreme summer heat back home. Sunny 20°C days with low humidity keep sightseeing pleasant while cooler nights assist sleep. Wildlife safaris thrive under moderate temperatures while budgets stretch further too with lower tourism influx.

AUTUMN (Feb – April) simmers slightly hotter around 25°C but lush winelands scenery and bright yellow fields impress photographers. This is also whale watching season along the southern and eastern coastline.

SUMMER (Mid Nov – Jan) days average 30°C peaking to 40°C sometimes. Rain stays low through peak holiday crowds and prices. City cultural events like the Cape Town Jazz Festival (Mar/April) occur too.

* Temperatures vary across regions

Year-round sunny weather keeps beach time, city explorations and road trips viable any season. But Winter (SA’s early summers) makes South African vacations most practical for Indians through moderate temperatures and lighter crowds.

Holidaying with close company means crafting shared memories treasured for years. Luckily scenic South Africa overflows varied attractions suiting kids and adults alike beyond spectacular safaris. Here are ten crowd-pleasing activities:

Durban Beachfront Fun

Head to this sunny city nicknamed the ‘playground of the Zulu Kingdom’ stretching along the Indian Ocean for the 5-mile Golden Mile lively promenade. Marvel shiny high-rise hotels between piers during sightseeing tram rides. Paddle vibrant craft markets browsing handmade dolls, wire art and beaded accessories.

Little ones squeal riding rickety fairground rides or tapping street performer marimba bands dancing. Teens and parents try sandboarding dunes or pick beach volleyball. At night, the entire clan will love the dancing musical fountain shows.

Cape Peninsula Touring

An awe-inspiring natural beauty awaits this scenic full-day coach trip from Cape Town circling the peninsula. Gasping views start arriving at Chapman’s Peak Drive, a narrow cliff-clinging mountain pass drop. Next photo stop – panoramic Hout Bay beach with the quaint harbour.

Further south, the Cape of Good Hope cliffside walk impresses rounding Africa’s southwestern corner and spotting ostriches and zebras along walking trails. Families bond, stopping penguins waddling on powder beaches and glimpsing distant whales during migration seasons.

Cradle of Humankind Caves

These World Heritage fossil sites contain over 40% of total human ancestor discoveries on Earth. Descend underground with guides through the Rising Star Cave system used for ancestor worship by early South Africans with kids getting their first thrills spelunking. Nearby Sterkfontein Caves are even more massive with whole rooms of relics like 2 million-year-old Mrs Ple’s skeletal remains that older children find fascinating to learn about humble human origins.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

Spread over 1300 acres against the Eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch impresses any age as one of the world’s great botanic gardens. Embark on meandering paths under shady trees identifying exotic Protea flowers native to South Africa over millions of years. Energetic groups stride up Skeleton Gorge Trail rewarding with panoramas. Fascinating garden guides Detail medicinal plants used for little explorers. Perfect family time.

Neighbourhood Cycling

Pedal the lively beach promenade in Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth cities by renting bicycles for the whole group. Kid-sized cycles with training wheels options keep families rolling together past attractions at a relaxed sightseeing pace, unlike tour buses. Frequent snack stops for popsicles, fried fish or sweet syrupy desserts fuel on-the-go energy.

Oudtshoorn Ostrich Interactions

These giant flightless birds fascinate kids and parents alike found roaming wild ostrich ranches around Oudtshoorn ‘feather capital’ town. Get snapped hand-feeding grey ostriches through wire fences or better yet – ride them like a horse guided holding wings for balance. Browse leather and feather souvenirs inside quirky stores too. Unforgettable up-close encounters all enjoy.

Cape Winelands Escapes

Beyond elegant wine estates dotting rolling green slopes, families find pleasant diversions around Franschhoek and Stellenbosch valleys to please every age. Older kids try grape juice tasting and marshmallow meals pairing sweet wines. Youngsters pet farmyard bunnies and goats while parents sip vintages. Many restaurants feature playgrounds that keep kids entertained for hours and special kids’ menu options too.

Artscape Theatre Shows

This Cape Town hub nurtures young creativity through scheduled family theatre performances like musical revues or dance showcases ideal for kids. Catch puppet productions at the tailor-made children’s theatre – lights, songs and laughter delight little spectators. Parents value early arts appreciation instilled through such engaging introductions.

Surfing Lessons

Ride the waves together once kids are able to swim by hiring an instructor for all-age surfing lessons over 2 hours around Cape Town or Durban beaches. After demonstrating techniques onshore, venture out catching baby breakers for thrilling rides back sure to get giggles. Surfing bonds families in a new adventurous environment.

Neighbourhood Shebeens

Pop into informal township taverns with a signature South African atmosphere perfect for socialising over traditional meals. Soweto offers many options – savour bunny chow bread bowls stuffed with curry or sample authentic lemony umqombothi maize beer brewed outside. Tantalise taste buds through Cape fusion gastronomy blending European, Asian and indigenous African cuisine cooking techniques and ingredients. Plus world-acclaimed vineyards await.

Signature Eats & Drinks

Tuck into authentic specialities like chakalaka curries (spiced beans), pap mealie porridge, savoury South African chutney relishes and famous bunny chow (hollow bread bowl stuffed with curry). Braai(BBQ) seasoned meats like spicy beef sausages, tender ostrich fillet and game meats take centre stage on the grill. Locals also relish Portuguese-influenced peri peri chicken, Indian bunnies at Durban balti houses and British-inspired high tea fare.

Among 21 wine-growing regions, explore South African Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and other celebrated estate varietals along routes like Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Paarl. Taste award winners scoring higher than Californian cult classics. Or discover craft gins, whiskey, ciders and beer like the iconic ZAR brand. Also, sample rooibos herbal teas offering antioxidant benefits are also available bottled or on menus. Plus try exotic fruits like marula nuts that wildlife love.

Foodie & Wine Escapes

Culture vultures, embark on wine valley trails through lush peaks and Cape Dutch cellars on guided tours/tasters and fine-dine lunches. Many estates also host acclaimed restaurants, festivals, and even summer evening concerts under the stars. Staying at vineyard inns maximises full foodie immersion.

Gourmet township eateries also authentically deliver resident tastes with welcoming character, unlike commercial chains. Order bunny chow, Moroccan stews, pineapple or chilli-cinnamon beer specials brewed out back. Some spots may seem basic counter service but offer signature flavours.

Seafood lovers, enjoy West Coast lobster, mussels and oysters plucked fresh from the cold Atlantic. Fresh fish recipes like regional angelfish to food cooked over coals reflect this fisherman’s heritage.

Go wild finding restaurants specialising in game dishes too – springbok loin, blesbok carpaccio of venison salami charcuterie plates make appetising starters beyond braai(BBQ) staples. Ostrich steak wows as lean red meat while egg ones top burgers and pizzas. Taste.

From hopping craft breweries to curating wine valley escapes – prepare for diverse, vibrant dining adventures as part of a South African holiday.

Do's and don'ts for an Enjoyable South Africa Trip

Planning once-in-a-lifetime South African holidays takes organising to maximise enjoyment in exploring this fascinating country. Here are crucial travel etiquette pointers ensuring smooth hassle-free vacationing:

  • Respect wildlife and local communities
  • Follow access restrictions, noise policies, and waste advisories
  • Support conservation initiatives and avoid plastic use
  • Learn basic greetings and practice recommended safety measures
  • Consider multi-day stays at game reserves and book luxury wildlife lodges in advance
  • Fly between cities to avoid exhausting road distances
  • Try traditional meat dishes with milder spice levels and experience authentic flavours
  • Ask for grape juice tastings at wine farms for children under 18

Don’ts

  • Don’t jest about crime issues
  • Don’t disregard driving challenges on self-guided holidays
  • Don’t overschedule daily activities
  • Don’t allow rigid wishlist expectations to dictate your holiday
  • Don’t miss out on absorbing cross-cultural aspects and meaningful engagements
  • Be selective and play to the strengths of particular regions
  • Go with an open mind and discover what makes South Africa an unforgettable travel treasure
  • Embrace the Ubuntu connection to deepen your understanding of the Rainbow Nation

What Needs Doing

Respect wildlife and local communities . Follow rules and don’t disturb nature. Take photos only where allowed. Help protect nature by donating or volunteering. Avoid using plastic to keep the environment clean for the future.

Learn basic greetings like ‘Molweni’ or handshakes . Being friendly helps you connect with people. Be careful in big cities – hide your phone and don’t show off money. Keep your valuables in the hotel, not in your car. Most locals are nice if you give them a chance.

Stay at game reserves for a few days to really enjoy the experience . South Africa is big, so you lose time travelling. Luxury lodges have limited space, so book early for June to October safaris. Fly between cities instead of driving long distances, which can be tiring. Take time to rest when moving around.

Try traditional meat dishes , but ask for less spice so you can enjoy the different flavours – like Malay curries or Portuguese barbecues. Cities have food for all tastes, so ask for what you like, but also try new things. Wine farms offer grape juice for kids under 18 who can’t drink alcohol. Special experiences make your trip more meaningful.

What to Avoid

Don’t joke about crime in South Africa . The country is working hard to make things safer for tourists. Be careful when you travel – hide your belongings and avoid empty, dark places at night. But don’t think that trouble will always happen. Be safe, but don’t expect the worst.

Don’t ignore how hard it can be to drive in South Africa if you’re on your own. Rental cars can have problems on the left-side highways or with wild animals on the road. Know that it’s harder to get help in rural areas. Plan extra time and gas stops for your trips. Or, take shuttles or guided safaris instead of driving. Driving here is different – going to game reserves is even riskier. Go slower and look carefully before passing other cars.

Don’t try to do too much in a short time. You won’t get to really enjoy each special place. Rushing from town to town on bus tours can make you tired of museums. Focus on what each region is best at – like spending time just in the Cape Winelands instead of adding it to the end of a safari. People are happiest and have the best memories when they take their time to experience South Africa’s different places. Quality is always better than quantity.

Best Time to Visit Africa The best time to visit Africa depends essentially on the country you are planning to holiday in. As we know that the African continent comprises many different countries, the climate varies significantly across Africa. For example, if you are planning to visit Morocco, then the months of April, May, October and November can be considered as the best time to relish the complacent and pleasant climate. Climatic conditions in the rest of the months in Morocco are quite unpredictable.

South Africa can be visited all-round the year, but the most recommended time is during the spring season, which crops up in the months from August to October. This is advised so that one can enjoy the safaris to the fullest. Festive times of Christmas and Easter are also quite exciting in South Africa. The flora of Tanzania and Zimbabwe can be cherished during the months between January to May. Although you can enjoy the magnificent beaches of Mauritius throughout the year, but it is recommended to visit this place during the months from September to January to avoid heavy rainstorms.

Go for a safari during the dry season for two main reasons - Firstly to avoid flash floods and other natural calamities during the monsoon and secondly during the dry season, the animals tend to migrate towards water bodies. Hence providing you an opportunity to witness the wildlife in Africa.

How to Reach Africa One can travel to any country of the African continent with ease. This is made possible by Thomas Cook India’s Africa tours. Africa is well connected to all the major parts of the world. In India, you can board a flight from all the major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Cochin and Trivandrum. These cities are well connected to the other domestic destinations. So, all one must do is choose the airlines according to your preference and fly to this beautiful land that has limitless culture, history, art, ethnicities and aesthetics.

Places to visit in Africa Egypt Land of pyramids. Land of gold. Land of desert. Egypt is an enchanting land of Africa placed in the North-east of the continent. Egypt is so much more than pyramids, mummies and sand. There is the beautiful city of Cairo, the great river Nile, marvelous temples and mosques, iconic historical sites, lively beaches and exotic wildlife that makes this country so wonderful. Egypt has been influenced by the west and east as has been the centre of trade and a bridge between the two sides. A destination placed in a beautiful location, blessed with a rich history, warm people and diverse cultures, Egypt is an emotion. Alluring Arabian towns, mouthwatering delicacies, aromatic spice souks and a fascinating wildlife habitat adds to this beautiful country of Egypt.

Morocco Morocco is like a lovely painting on a canvas. Sprawling deserts, ancient cities, rich culture, scrumptious delicacies and warm people characterise Morocco. This country is blessed with some breathtaking views and beautiful houses that will make you fall in love with it. With dazzling nightlife scenes and an endless number of shopping centers, this place will fill you up with amazing experiences you will cherish for lifetime. Pretty and lovely streets with colourful elegant houses add up to the beauty of this place. The charming places, culture and lifestyle of Morocco is worth exploring.

Odzala National Park Odzala National park is in the north of the Republic of the Congo. This Park is massive and is nestled deep in Africa's equatorial forest. Odzala is the second largest forest after Amazon. Home to the greatest number of mammals, primates, birds, amphibians, fish and swallowtail butterflies in Africa. Twelve species of Gorillas are extensively found here. But, Odzala is not only about Gorillas. Don’t be surprised if you come across forest elephants, forest buffaloes, hippopotamus, dwarf crocodiles, monkeys, forest ducks and around 450 species of birds. Absolute serenity, exotic animals and pristine forests fill up this alluring National Park. You can go on a Gorilla trek and can witness a close encounter with these beautiful and smart creatures.

The Loango Park This wildlife destination is a paradise for nature lovers and thrill seekers. Loango is known as ‘Africa’s last Eden’. Here, calm streams move through green forests and lush meadows, while islands and soft sandy beaches provide home for exotic wildlife. This place is best known for its dark coloured hippos, lazing in the waters. You will be surprised to find an extensive number and variety of whales and dolphins, elephants walking around the beaches, large species of gorillas in the woodlands and some rare wildlife frolicking in the savanna.

Victoria Falls If you wish to get your adrenaline pumping and want to indulge in some thrilling activities, you cannot miss visiting this place on your Africa holiday. Victoria Falls straddles the Zimbabwe-Zambia border and is an activity hub. Test your courage rafting the wild river run or simply fling yourself off a bridge connected to a bungee cord. "I'll show you how to navigate the buzzing cities of India, and go beyond to find soul-stirring temples, beautiful mountains and irresistible food."

Travel Director

Navigate the busy streets of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride

The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.

Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra

Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.

Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park

Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.

Experience royal Rajasthan

Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.

Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai

Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favourite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

India is notorious among travellers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. Has South Africa’s ANC failed to live up to its promises?

South Africa is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its first democratic election.

South Africa is marking Freedom Day –  the historic day that changed the course of the country.

Hopes were high in 1994, as years of segregation and white-minority rule came to an end, and millions of Black South Africans cast their vote for the first time.

But 30 years on, many say there’s little to celebrate. Hope has been replaced by disappointment and scepticism.

The African National Congress, which has been in power since the end of apartheid, is accused of not keeping its promises. It has been embroiled in corruption scandals.

Unemployment is at an all-time high, crime is widespread and race-based inequality is still a problem.

This year’s anniversary comes a month ahead of general elections – which could see the governing party lose its majority for the first time.

So, has the ANC failed to live up to its promises?
