Q. Do I need a transit visa for any stopover my flight makes on its way to South Africa? A. A majority of the flights to South Africa from India are by Ethiopian Airlines. The airlines makes a halt at its hub airport in Addis Ababa before proceeding to either Cape Town or Durban. But for a mere transit flight you do not need to get yourself an e-visa. But if you wish to step out of the permitted transit area of the airport and explore Ethiopia’s capital city for a while before boarding your onward flight, you would have to get yourself a transit visa at the said airport. Q. Is travel insurance mandatory for South Africa? A. Travel insurance is not mandatory to enter South Africa. But is advisable to buy one as there could be any kind of exigency during travel and an insurance provides you that cushion when you are travelling really far away from your home country. Medical treatment could be quite expensive in South Africa, and by buying insurance you can earn yourself a cover. Typically a travel insurance covers theft of your belongings, money, documents like passport, aside from medical expenses and hospital benefit, accommodation cover, legal expenses, and in case you have to cut short, cancel or abandon your trip. Q. How much would a 9-day trip to South Africa cost? A. This would depend on the places you are visiting in South Africa. A 9-day trip encompassing Johannesburg, Sun City, Mossel Bay and Cape Town would come up to INR 1,30,237 per person. This includes five hotel stays. But if you were to visit Cape Town, Hermanus, George and Stellenbosch, your trip would cost INR 1,97,244 per person. This includes the cost of getting your visa, two flights and five hotel stays. Q. What is the currency of South Africa and how easily can I exchange it? A. The currency of South Africa is Rand (ZAR) with 1 ZAR equivalent of approximately INR 4.69. During your travels in South Africa you can conveniently use your MasterCard and Visa credit cards. The Diners Club and American Express are, however, not so commonly accepted. You can exchange the foreign currency at Bureaux de Change and all local banks. All major cities in South Africa have ATMs in every business and shopping quarter. By loading up some local currency in your multi-currency card, you can do fairly well at major restaurants and retail outlets. Also, to get a better valuation, it is best to get your currency changed locally in South Africa. Q. How to get a visa to travel to South Africa? A. While US citizens are exempt from it, Indians are, however, required to get a visitor’s visa. The VFS visa application centres are in Gurgaon, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Goa, Pune, Bangalore and Jaipur. You need to apply from either of these centres. Indian nationals are exempt from a visa application fee. The support documents you require include a passport, completed visa application form, proof of funds which comprises last three month’s bank statements signed and stamped by the bank with a balance of INR 60,000 for Delhi, proof of hotel booking, a day-to-day itinerary, confirmed return air ticket among others. It can take about five working days to up to three weeks to receive your visa. Q. Do I need to produce my marriage certificate if I am travelling to South Africa on a honeymoon? A. When filing your visa application you need to show a proof of your marriage. This could be either a marriage certificate, wedding photographs or a wedding invitation. The new rule has kicked in owing to the rise in cases of human trafficking. Q. Do I need a yellow fever vaccination to travel to South Africa? A. South Africa mandates a valid yellow fever certificate travelling from an infected area or in transit from an infected area. In case you are travelling directly from India or USA and not transiting or arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you do not need this vaccination certificate. In South Africa, however, there is no risk of contacting the fever. Q. Are there any malaria recommendations for South Africa? A. The Kruger National Park, KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga are low risk zones for contacting malaria. The Eastern Cape Reserves are malaria free. But it is better to consult your doctor on whether you would need a malaria medication. Mosquito repellents and sleeping under a mosquito net are other effective ways of keeping the mosquito at bay. Q. What language is commonly spoken in South Africa A. South Africa has several indigenous dialects of which 11 are officially recognised. But you can easily get around with English as it is widely spoken across major cities and towns, at government, commerce and banking districts. Road signage are also in English and even your hotel staff would be able to communicate with you fluently in English. Q. Are there any luggage restrictions for a South Africa safari? A. The things you need to carry with you at all times include your sunglasses, medication if any, passport, wallet, any electronic device whether it is a laptop or a mobile, binoculars, camera and jewellery. If you are going to be travelling in a small aircraft or a vehicle, the luggage capacity is going to be limited. It is better to carry a soft bag with wheels facilitating an easier transfer from your safari camp or lodge. Owing to the weight of camera equipment in your hand baggage, a few game reserves let you rent camera gear during your stay. Q. What is the electric current in South Africa? A. At 220V most electric equipment run here. You will find outlets to fit 15 amp and 3 pin plugs. Though most hotels provide you with adapters, it is recommended you carry your own. Q. Put on a hat and keep your sunglasses and binoculars handy. Dab copious amounts of sunscreen lotion before setting out on a safari. Make sure you always have a bottle of drinking water at hand.

South Africa Safari Holidays & Tours from India

South africa safari holidays from india.

Surrounded by oceans and captivating views, South Africa is the perfect holiday destination for all types of travellers: honeymooners, families, and especially adventure seekers. With superb infrastructure and wonderful hospitality, it is truly a memorable destination. Most itineraries to South Africa begin in Johannesburg and cover Kruger National Park (or the adjacent private reserves), Cape Town, the Winelands (Franschhoek & Stellenbosch) and parts of the Garden Route.

Cape Town V&A Waterfront

It is a great first safari destination as many of the game reserves and parks have the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, cape buffalo), a must-see for first-time safari-goers. It also has some unique and unusual safari destinations such as large private game reserves in the North near the Kalahari as well as in the east near Durban.

If you are planning on visiting South Africa on a holiday from India there are several things you should keep in mind.

Is South Africa the right destination for me?

Our answer in one word: YES! South Africa is a beautiful destination for all sorts of travellers. It has beautiful vistas and wonderful food, romantic retreats and a vibrant arts and culture scene, and wildlife like no other place in the world.

I am vegetarian. Will I get vegetarian / Indian food in South Africa?

Yes, you will easily get great vegetarian food all over South Africa. South Africa produces some of the best fresh vegetables and fruits in the world, so expect delicious food. And while there are great Indian restaurants in most major cities of South Africa, the food may not be the same as what you get at home. So, we normally suggest that you opt for continental dishes. Another plus point: most chefs in South Africa are trained in Jain style cuisine, so you can easily order food without onions or garlic.

Where should I go in South Africa?

Take a look at our sample list of South Africa tours and holiday itineraries. We generally customize all our tours, so feel free to get in touch.

How soon should I book my South Africa holiday?

If you are travelling from November to February, we recommend booking well in advance to get the properties of your choice. Christmas is usually very busy in South Africa (it’s peak season and the summer months) and most good properties (especially the safari lodges) get booked out 3-6 months in advance.

If you’re are travelling during from April to October, it will be easier to get space as this is usually the off-peak season. It is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, however, it does not get too chilly. It is also the best time to go for safaris, and well in time with Indian summer holidays.

What’s the weather like in South Africa?

Read this article to know more about the different seasons and the general weather patterns in South Africa.

Can I drive in South Africa? Will my Indian driving license work?

Yes, you can! And we highly recommend it. The roads are in wonderful condition; you drive on the same side of the road as India, and an Indian driving license (written in English) works! Read more about self-driving in South Africa here.

How can I get a tourist visa to South Africa as an Indian citizen?

Read this article to know more about how to get a tourist visa to South Africa as an Indian citizen.

Do I need any vaccinations to go to South Africa?

No, you don’t, unless you are travelling to South Africa from a country where you need to take a vaccination. Read more about this here. Malaria is prevalent in some areas of South Africa. Generally, our Indian guests do not take any medications for this, but carry a mosquito-repellant like Odomos.

How to get to South Africa from India?

There are no longer any direct flights from India to South Africa. You will have to have one stopover, either somewhere in the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha), or Ethiopia, or Kenya. The shortest flight from Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore to Johannesburg is usually Emirates, taking approximately 13 – 15 hours including stopover.

However, Emirates is usually more expensive than other airlines. We have travelled on Emirates, Etihad, Kenya Airways & Ethiopian Airlines, and all airlines are perfectly safe and comfortable to travel on. Ethiopian Airliens and Kenya Airways are usually a little more basic, but cheaper as well.

How shall I book my tickets from India to South Africa?

We can either help you book your tickets via our agent, or you can book it yourself (online or offline). Before you book your flights, it’s good to have an itinerary in place because you will usually book an open jaw ticket (eg. arrive in Johannesburg and depart from Cape Town).

Is South Africa a safe holiday destination?

Most of the areas you will be visiting will very safe. There are regular police patrols and it is recommended that you stick to well-lit areas. However, South Africa, like India, has a big divide between the rich and the poor and this causes some disquiet, especially in areas like Johannesburg. We recommend keeping the same precautions that you would do in India: don’t roam around at night and be aware of your surroundings.

South Africa & India: A Long History

South Africa and India share a long, proud history, dating back to 1860, when Indian migrants first settled on the shores of Durban. This relationship was further deepened with Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and with the end of apartheid. Today, South Africa and India have bolstered a strong relationship as members of BRICS. We hope this relationship can and will grow over the years.

Chalo Africa provides luxury African safari tours and holidays from the United States (Washington DC), United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and India.

Top Bucket-List Experiences

1. Rendezvous with Africa’s ‘Big 5’

Africa’s most iconic wildlife creatures comprise elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard which are popularly known as the ‘Big 5’ across the continent. And South Africa is one of those very few places where you would be able to tick off sighting all the five in just one day. South Africa has been listed among the finest ‘ Big 5 safari destinations ’; thanks to the country’s lush foliage, hauntingly beautiful forests, vast wildlife and outstanding national parks. Kruger National Park, MalaMala, Lion Sands and Dulini, Phinda Game Reserve, Madikwe Game Reserve are just a few names where the Big 5 can be easily spotted.

While all the attention has been given to the ‘Big 5’, the tourism board of SA is now actively promoting the agenda of seeing ‘Big 7’ where Southern Right whales and Great White sharks are the interesting additions. And if you’re looking to see the Big Seven in one outing, the Eastern Cape is the place to be at.

2. Discover the scenic trail of Garden Route

Along the country's southeast coast, the Garden Route, SA’s popular holiday destination, runs for about 300 kilometres through some of South Africa's most breathtaking coastal scenery. The route which begins about four hours outside Cape Town stretches along the Indian Ocean and winds its way via the gorgeous towns of George, Knysna, Wilderness and Sedgefield.

It looks like entering into a dreamy fairyland where you are constantly accompanied by the rolling green hills, giant trees, lagoons, colourful birds and picturesque landscapes that are nothing but drop-dead gorgeous. The twisty trails are mostly followed by hikers while the forests surrounding the lakes and rivers here invite long drives.

Making your mind to road-trip through this mesmerising route? Book one of these South Africa Tour Packages with us and we guarantee you an unforgettable holiday experience.

2. Experience the medley of adventure and leisure at Mossel Bay

This bustling Garden Route town located near Cape Town is a favourite holiday spot and one of the ports of South Africa. Lying close to the towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna on the Garden Route, Mossel Bay has become an ideal retreat for travellers seeking adventure and respite. While water sports are enormously popular along with whale watching activities, its wide beaches and awesome cliffs of Cape St Blaize’s southern shores have become the handpicked favourites in the itinerary. The jaw-dropping Outeniqua Mountains in the backdrop also make for a worthwhile stopover on the Garden Route.

3. Relish the beach holiday vibes at Benguerra Island, Mozambique

A luxury beach holiday destination situated off the coast of Mozambique, Benguerra Island is an island hideaway sitting peacefully on a protected lagoon. Disappear for a day on a romantic castaway picnic, sail the sapphire waters in a sunset dhow cruise or how about diving your way around the coral reefs, teeming with the school of rare fishes.

Benguerra Island over the recent years has gained importance due to various intimate lodging options coming into the picture and the variety of island experiences assuring a promise of deep relaxation. Once you visit this adventure haven surrounded by a hushed silence, you will be forced to choose between Benguerra and other beach destinations around the world.

4. Swim with the penguins at Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach or Betty’s Bay has been the home of an African penguin colony since 1982, where tourists are able to observe the penguins up and close and enjoy the swimming. You will see these pretty little creatures splashing around in the water or basking in the sunlight on the boulders at the far end of the beach. What is interesting to note is that they are so used to humans that you won’t see them rushing away or hiding; some of them come pretty close and even swim around you. While they may look cute, they are still the animals belonging to the wild so try to be careful around them and avoid feeding.

To get the best views, try to arrive before 11:00 am. Apart from the penguins, the Boulders Beach itself is quite gorgeous which makes it a photographer’s delight too!

Our tour with Earthstompers was AMAZING! It was super easy to communicate with them and get all the info we needed. The accomodations were all super amazing and comfortable with some super yummy food! There were some vegans in our group and in all place they got a vegan option, which is super nice. We have so many amazing memories from the penguins at Bettys bay, Hermanus, Cape Agulhas, the Congo Cave tour, our canoe trip and hike in Wilderness, the nice hiking Tsitsikamma National Park and the beautiful ride at Addo National Elephant Park. Christine, our tour guide, was just exceptional. She was fun, courteous, super friendly and make sure we all had an amazing experience. Cindy was also super communicative and responsive to help us with any last minute request (thank you!). We highly recommend this tour, 10/10!! ♥️ Earthstompers

Part 1: Capetown. Great hotel, loved the tour to Kirstenbosch and Cape Point. Our CEO Dee assisted us with scheduling the free day by arranging a half-day tour to Stellenbosch. Part 2: Johannesburg. Nice guesthouse, good food. Loved the Panoramic Route, Kruger safari and everything about the Karongwe stay (lodges, safaris and food!)

Great trip, from our stay at Malikana Guesthouse and the hospitality provided by Soekie and her family to our forays into Kruger National Park and Karongwe Game Preserve. We had the opportunity to see so much, even had a chance to walk with cheetahs! Our tour group was phenomenal which made it that much better and Guillaume and the guides who took us through the game preserves made sure we saw the Big Five and so much more. My family and I would highly reccomend this trip.

This tour was one of the greatest travel experiences I've ever had. Our CEO Alfred Dovey led the way throughout South Africa with such care and knowledge about everything we did while providing clear direction of what each plan of the day was and where we needed to be. I feel was was able to see, learn and experience South Africa in a way I could have never done on my own. I highly recommend this G Adventure tour.

Navigate the busy streets of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride

The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.

Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra

Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.

Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park

Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.

Experience royal Rajasthan

Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.

Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai

Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.

National Museum

India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favourite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

South India travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to India?

Yes, all foreigners entering India will need a visa. Whether you can apply for an e-visa is dependent on your nationality, the duration of your India tour and how you plan on entering the country.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travellers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travellers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

South Africa eyes 1 lakh tourists from India in 2024

S outh African Tourism Board on Friday said it is expecting to welcome 1 lakh tourists from India this year, breaching the pre-COVID level.

It is focusing on travellers from tier II cities to tap the huge potential in the smaller cities.

“We hosted over 79,000 Indian travellers in 2023, which is 82 per cent of the pre-Covid levels. In 2019, 95,000 Indian visitors travelled to South Africa , and this year, we are expecting the footfalls from India to cross 1,00,000 tourists.

“We are more focused on attracting travellers from tier II cities in India, which is very critical for our growth,” South African Tourism Hub Head – Middle East, India and Southeast Asia – Neliswa Nkani told PTI.

Türkiye aims at 30 per cent growth of Indian tourists in 2024, looks for partnerships: Turkish official

There is a huge potential in the tier II cities in India, and that is where the South African Tourism Board needs to invest and make sure to create a demand and offer something exciting, she added.

Without disclosing the amount, she said South African Tourism has a huge budget to showcase the country through outdoor advertising , digital media, trade engagements, roadshows, and corporate engagements, among others.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the concluding event of South African Tourism’s 20th Annual India Roadshow in Mumbai, which kickstarted in Jaipur, followed by Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru.

Nkani further stated that India is the number six source market for South Africa in terms of footfalls, while the UK, Germany, the US, the Netherlands and France are ranked among the top five.

“All the top five source markets are visa-free and have direct connectivity, whereas with India, there are no direct flights, and also it is not visa-free,” she noted.
